And let's take you straight to that
breaking news which is just in that
police are at the scene of a reported
stabbing at a synagogue in Crumpsil,
Greater Manchester. The Northwest
Ambulance Service says a major incident
has been declared. There aren't many
details at the moment, but what we have,
let's go to our correspondent Sha Dilly,
who is with us. Sean, I mean, as I said,
not many details at the moment, but just
take us through what we know.
I certainly will. Uh, there were reports
of multiple stabbings outside of a
synagogue in Crumpsel area of
Manchester, which is about 3 miles north
of the center. It is a large Jewish
population area. But we can offer some
reassurance coming from the Manchester
Mayor Andy Bham, who says that the
immediate danger appears to be over.
He's told BBC Manchester he can give
some assurance of that fact. The
incident he says was dealt with
effectively by those on site and by
Manchester police. It's quite normal
where there are reports of this kind of
detail. Emergency services are also
dealing with patchy information to
declare a major incident so that they're
ready and they can get those trauma
teams in and ready.
Um let me just uh Sean and let you know
as I was looking there is a a BBC News
live page running at the moment. So for
people that want to keep across this
then um then that's a good place to
look. The Northwest Ambulance Service um
has just shown put out a statement.
They're saying that following reports of
an incident on Middleton Road in
Crumpsell, the trust has dispatched
resources to the scene. We are currently
assessing the situation and working with
other members of the emergency services.
Our priority is to ensure people receive
the medical help they need as quickly as
possible. So Sean, just remind us again
what we know in terms of from the police
what they're saying.
Well, the police have confirmed they are
uh attending the reports of the
stabbing, but actually what we've
learned from the Northwest Ambulance
Service statement, there is the precise
location on Middleton Road. The uh
release that you've just put out there,
uh we do know in broad terms how these
incidents are dealt with. Obviously,
whilst the facts were established both
by police officers on uh hand and other
emergency services, we know that the
first priority is to deal with any
threat that may uh exist. We won't
speculate on that at the moment. But the
routine for police officers attending
these scenes is to make that scene safe
for the ambulance service to go in, the
paramedics to do their job. The first uh
thing to bear in mind with any trauma
medical situation is get rid of the D,
the danger. Uh they're moving uh on in
at pace at the same time as doing the
critical casualty work in Middleton
Road, three miles north uh in
Manchester. Uh the uh the ambulance
service will be doing the recovery and
rescue efforts. The police will also be
developing uh crime scenes. We've seen
reports on social media of cordons in
and around the area because obviously
the most important thing uh here would
be to deal with with any casualties that
may or may not uh exist there but then
also to investigate who may be
responsible for it.
Yeah. And as you say there sort of in
terms of details from the police um they
were saying a little earlier that
multiple people may have been stabbed.
The Manchester Mayor Andy Bham has
described it as a serious incident. uh
he's been talking to BBC Radio
Manchester. Um some reassurance though
from him, Sean.
Yeah, I mean again he says it seems to
have been dealt with effectively by
those on scene. So I think we can bear
uh that in mind. He said the immediate
danger seems to be uh over. So that
could be some reassurance to anybody
watching BBC News monitoring push alerts
um uh that you know obviously the
situation is uh in hand as it can be at
this time. We would point people towards
as you've mentioned the BBC live page
because we've got you know as we speak
information coming up there from the uh
Manchester Mayor Andy Bernham there uh
Northwest Ambulance Service as you've
just said has confirmed the uh major
incident in the Crumpsel area and as you
say following that report of the
incident in Middleton Road. So we now
know the precise location. Uh we do know
that the location is outside of a
synagogue, but at the moment anything uh
that people may be saying in in terms of
uh uh motivation would be speculation.
Now that is something we don't do on BBC
News, we will keep you updated on the
live page throughout the morning.
Yeah, it's also worth saying that um
like you're saying reassurance, but the
Manchester Mayor also saying avoid the
area. And as you were saying, this will
be because a cordon will have been set
up to work out what's going on. So what
the police don't want is lots of people
going there. If you turn up to a scene,
any police officer dealing with that, if
you're there, you're they're going to
have to stop what they're doing
potentially to take your details. So,
the most unhelpful thing uh to uh to
this situation would be is if you are
uninvolved to turn up because your
details would need to be taken. Uh
potentially you you know your presence
would need to be accounted for or
otherwise uh eliminated. And at the
moment, emergency services uh are
dealing with this active scene cordons
in and around the area. And they're
going to find it much easier to speak to
people who may have witnessed what
happens if uh people who who are
uninvolved, who haven't seen anything
steer clear from the area for them.
Um as you say, uh absolutely not going
to speculate on uh any sort of
motivation at the moment. As I say, this
news literally just coming in in the
last what of 10 minutes or so of a
serious incident uh in Manchester in the
Crumpsell area of Manchester, North
Manchester um involving, according to
police, multiple stabbings. Um the
Northwest Ambulance Service has put out
a statement confirming that this is a
major incident. Sean, do you have that
statement from the Northwest Ambulance
Service?
I do indeed. I do indeed. I have that in
front of me on email here in front in
front of me. Forgive me, letting light
in the magic. I'm using screen reading
technology with some of our news systems
that uh you can see I can't
unfortunately but the statement I now
have in front of me they say that
following reports uh it says it's at the
scene of the major incident in Middleton
Road in Crumpsell they say that they
have dispatched resources to that scene

synagogue uh we understand. Um and it is
a particularly
uh religious time time of the year um in
terms of it being Yam Kipur which is a
particularly holy day in the in the
Jewish Jewish religious calendar.
Yeah, that's right. for the past couple
of days. Um and and and again, you know,
as you've underlined really, we will not
speculate as to whether that is or isn't
linked, but it is of course highly
notable because of Yonaport. Um you
know, where
Can I just interrupt you one second
because we're just having some news in
from our UK correspondent Daniel Sanford
who's reporting that according to
Greater Manchester Police, the suspect
in the attack has been shot.
Okay. Um, no details as to what
condition um, that person may now be in,
but uh, Daniel Sanford there reporting
that Greater Manchester Police have
confirmed that the suspect in the
Crumpsell synagogue attack has been
shot.
So, let's just talk through some of that
procedure. Obviously, uh, the the
massive rider that we put on this is
we're waiting for all of the details.
Uh, we won't assume anything uh, in this
case. We'll find out, you know, the
source of who discharged what weapons
under what circumstances. But where
there are reports of immediate risk to
life, there are two types of authorized
firearms officers working with every
police force across the country
actually. Uh specialist firearms
officers, authorized firearms officers
who scramble pretty quickly on blue
lights. They're advanced drivers. They
move through scenes pretty quickly. Uh
they have um normally, you know,
sidearms on them. they have uh access in
their vehicles to uh to rifles. Normally
though, these things without any
speculation, these are things that
emergency services scramble to very
quickly. And whenever these things
happen, it's always worth pointing out
that they do deal with any threat as any
other citizen would within the law of
England and Wales in this case. So, we
will keep you posted on that one. Again,
the BBC live page updating those details
as we speak.
Yeah, indeed. Let's just take a minute
to just take stock of what's happened
because clearly this uh an event uh
that's been moving very quickly uh just
in the last hour. So, uh reports
stabbings outside a synagogue in
northern England. So, that's in the
north part of of of Manchester, an area
called uh Crumpsaw. According to the
police, there were multiple stabbings.
And also according to the police uh our
uh correspondent Daniel Sanford has been
reporting that the suspect has been
shot. Uh although we do not know the
