Security has been stepped up at Jewish
sites across the country after a deadly
attack on a synagogue in Manchester. Two
people were killed, four others injured
after a car was driven towards
worshippers. At least one person was
stabbed. The police declared it a
terrorist incident. And just in the last
30 minutes or so, we've had a statement
from Greater Manchester Police providing
uh new details on three main areas.
Firstly, their investigation and the
arrests that they've been making.
Secondly, brand new details of the
suspect and thirdly, new details of the
victims. So, if we start with now what
we know about the victims, Greater
Manchester Police saying two men were
pronounced dead after the incident.
Three other men remain in hospital with
serious injuries. And we now know a bit
of detail about those injuries. One
sustained a stab wound. A second was hit
by the car involved in the attack and a
third man later presented at hospital
with injuries that may have been
sustained as officers stopped the
attacker. Uh Greater Manchester Police
go on to say, "We are working to
formally identify those who have been
killed and provide support to their
loved ones." So, we know that two men
were pronounced dead following the
incident, but we don't yet have a formal
identification of either men. So, we do
not know uh their names. And we know
three others in hospital, but again, we
are still waiting uh to learn the
identity of them. onto the suspect,
Greater Manchester Police saying that we
are now able to confirm that although
formal identification is yet to take
place, we believe the person responsible
for today's attack is 35year-old Jihad
Al Shami.
Jihad al- Shami. He is a British citizen
of Syrian descent.
A suspicious device worn by the attacker
during the incident has been assessed
and deemed not to be viable. That is
what we understood a few hours ago
through this afternoon. Based on what we
currently know, our records say the
police do not show any previous prevent
referrals relating to this individual.
Prevent is a governmentr run
counterterror
uh program. So the suggestions so far
not part of that program. no contact
through that scheme. And the third
significant area of updates, as I
mentioned, from uh Manchester Police
here saying about their investigation
and about the arrests that they've made.
We previously believed, but didn't have
confirmation that two people have been
arrested. Well, now we can confirm that
three suspects are currently in custody
and have been arrested. Uh that is from
Greater Manchester Police. They've been
arrested on suspicion of commission,
preparation, and instigation of acts of
terrorism. They are two men in their 30s
and a woman in her 60s. Uh scenes remain
in place at White House Avenue, which is
where we were a little earlier, in
Crumpsaw and in Langley Cresant Press,
which are also linked to the arrests. So
that is the latest from Greater
Manchester Police on the investigation.
They say that the attacks, excuse me,
this morning
uh took place uh this morning, but the
investigation into them continues now.
So they are the latest details we have.
All the very latest updates are filing
through on the BBC News live page. So
you can of course follow them here. But
we will have plenty more coverage live
here on BBC News as police releasing for
the first time the name of the suspect.
35year-old
man, a British citizen of Syrian
descent. Jihad al Shami is the name.
That is understood to be the image of
him.
