Taiwan will not accept Washington's
proposal to locally manufacture half the
chips it currently supplies to the US.
The island's top trade negotiator says
speaking to reporters. Uh Changi Chuan,
also the country's vice premier said on
Wednesday that the proposal for 5050
split and semiconductor production was
not even discussed as she returned from
trade talks in the US. According to
Taiwan Central News Agency, Shank said
the talks were focused on reducing
levies on Taiwanese exports. And Taiwan
currently faces a reciprocal tariff rate
of 20%.
Washington has held discussions with
Taipei about the 50/50 split in
semiconductor production, which would
cut American reliance on Taiwan.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik said
last Wednesday in an interview to News
Nation that adding that currently 95% of
US demands was met via chips uh produce
within Taiwan. My objective and this
administration objective is to get chip
manufacturing significantly on short. We
need to make our own chips. Lutnik said
the idea that I pitched Taiwan was let's
get 50/50. We're producing half and
we're you're producing half. Donald
Trump also has spoken taken aim at the
islands dominance and chip earlier this
year accusing it of stealing the US chip
business. Interesting, Tom. It's very
simple. Taiwan says, "I wanted you to
prot this is incredibly simple. Taiwan
said, "I wanted you to protect me from
from China, but I don't want you to take
the revenue by building some of the
chips over at your house. Please don't
do that." And that was the deal that the
Trump uh and Howard Lutton have put in
front of him. Hey, we're going to build
chips in the US. It'll be 50/50. we'll
move the tariff back and then we'll
diplomatically work with China and
they're like no I still want to make
everything and I want you to protect me.
That's what it came down to. I think
Lutnik's being very smart here.
