in the repair shop today dorm has high
hopes for a mean green cleaning machine
so when we plug that in I want it to
hover off the table float across the
side With a Little Help from Mark there
we go yes that's good good while kon's
Steady Hand is put to the test
reconstructing a tiny te- set it's quite
difficult to get really nice joins on
this you can't rush it and if it's not
right you need to undo it and redo
[Music]
it first Jonathan Sparks from Barsha
with a treasured Talisman that's been
through the wars
hello there
hello nice to meet you and you too your
name is I'm John John I'm will I will
what's inside the Box the remnants of a
shoe is a leather shoe yes this might be
one for Susie Susie this job should be a
perfect fit for master Saddler Susie
Fletcher oh my goodness it's tiny it is
Tiny size two I believe baby shoe I'm
sure one time it had a heel and a buckle
but
that's long gone how did you come by
this tiny shoe my grandfather was in the
first old war in France and he spotted
this baby shoe on top of the mud at the
side of the road he put it in his pocket
and he thought when he gets the next
Village you'll look for a mom holding a
baby with a a missing shoe yeah needless
to say at the Village or the town he
didn't find her and he kept it in his
pocket went through the wall
when my dad uh enlisted during the
second world war my granddad came to me
and said listen I've got something I
want you to carry with you you brought
me luck I survived and my dad said what
is it he gave him the shoe and my dad
carried it throughout the second world
war and he was um parachute Battalion so
he did 126 jumps wow 26 jump yeah a lot
of them behind NV lines amazing once my
father passed away in '95 my mom called
me and said is there anything you want
of Dad's I just said just want the shoe
the shoe really and she said what that
Tatty old thing I said yeah and I never
got to meet my grandfather he died
before I was born so I kind of felt it
was a a link to him in a way your
grandfather's name is Hubert Hubert H
okay yeah why now do you want this
little shoe preserved it's it's it's
lived in a safe for last
20 years okay but to take it out now I
mean it's just it doesn't really mean
anything I don't know what it resembles
it's barely a
shoe whatever you're able to
do anything any Improvement of the sorry
state that it's in this is really going
to push me to my limits in being able to
get this back into some sort of
condition but I don't mind a challenge
and I certainly don't mind it when it
carries such a beautiful story for your
family thank you that's very kind thanks
for bringing it down and we will see you
very
soon nice you bye
bye you're going to need a lot of luck s
lots of luck lot luck lots of luck the
little
shoe means more I can than I can
describe it's it's a connection back to
grandfather father and hopefully as it
goes down the generation
they will feel the same way it means an
awful luck to me now I know this is over
100 years old but it's looking more like
a flip flop than a shoe how are you
going to build up that shape again it is
going to be very very difficult to work
with I need to consolidate this leather
which will be making all the fibers a
little bit more stable so they're less
likely to want to break aparts but what
would be really useful is if I had a
form that I could build the shoe on okay
cuz we've got this back missing
and I don't know how to support it other
than to make some sort of form would you
like me to make like a small wooden
child's foot almost yes that would be
amazing I've never made one before if I
can take some measurements
absolutely then I can roughly start
shaping up my block of word lovely okay
well I'll leave that with you you okay
you make a start and then we'll catch up
sounds great lovely thank
[Music]
you I can't think of any leather that
I've ever worked on that this bad it is
way for thin but you have to have a leap
of faith you you just have to go for it
what I'm going to do is start with the
consolidating gel so I'm hoping I'm
going to be able to at least give it a
little bit of structure back just gently
dabbing all over the leather once I've
completely covered the leather let it
dry and then I'll be able to hand it
over to Will and he'll be hopefully a
able to make this lovely form that would
be a permanent fixture in the
shoe as Susie Embraces the Monumental
task of getting the little shoe back on
its feet outside another
visitor corser MTA from Bradford has a
rusty Relic from her childhood for the
attention of Dom chinia hi there you
okay hi come in coming hello there wow
and electronics was Mark
Stucky I'm C
nice to meet you I'm dying to see what's
in this box yeah it's quite a large box
it's got to be something
big no still no idea really oh hang on
oh no no okay is it a vacuum cleaner it
is a vacuum cleaner yeah yeah yeah wow
this bit's a little bit heavier oh okay
look at that I have never seen a vacuum
cleaner like that have you yeah I have
they're sort of 1950s 1960s um they
actually collect there are people
collect the different ranges
why on Earth have you brought in a
vacuum cleaner to us today well I used
this as a play toy when I was quite
young so you're talking about when I was
about five so in the early 1980s we grew
up in Halifax few siblings and I think
this particular period was probably the
happiest of my childhood oh we would use
this vacuum it's got quite a nice long
pipe and wire and we turn the vacuum on
pull each other on the vacuum we sit on
here and hold that as a handle and and
and play with it cuz it's got quite a
powerful motor so they they hover a
little little bit Yeah so there's no
wheels it doesn't no it has no wheels no
no cuz it'd be on carpet and you can see
it's quite rounded at the bottom it's so
it's smooth it it's like a yes it just
blows out the bottom and you just drag
that sounds like quite a good fun
childhood yeah it was you don't know
where this came from at that time I know
my dad bought a lot of things you know
they had the catalogs everything was
paid in installments and this was
probably quite a a thing to have at the
time my dad he loves fixing things
always did fixing cars vacuums cleaners
sewing machines but he just hasn't got
the time to do it now sort of cleared
out the the garage and this had been
there 30 years you know because it's
linked to my childhood yeah I thought we
can't we're not going to throw this one
away so what's the plan then if if we're
able to get it working I really want to
pass it on to my daughter oh okay oh
that's nice cuz I know that she's the
kind of person who as long as this is
working it will stay with us and my
daughter's very much like me she's 16
and she loves to reuse things and not
buy brand new so when was the last time
this was working coming up to sort of 40
years what is your expectation of how
this is going to look how is it going to
work it's just about having that that
sound and movement again oh it would be
so nice to it not be rusty and be like
it would have been then all glossy I
love the color I love that color yes I
feel like it deserves to look its best
exactly thank you so much for bringing
this in it's going to be interesting I
think that's the right word actually and
it's lovely to meet you thank you see
you later byebye
[Music]
I think the vacuum cleaner is such an
important item to me because it's a
reminder of my childhood this would be
really nice if I could have this back to
its past life it's also something I can
pass on to my daughter and I'm hoping
maybe to my grandchildren one
day I love it I think it's absolutely
brilliant we need to do as much as we
can to get it working again yeah and
looking its best inside there I know
there's going to be some electrics there
going to be a motor a fan things like
that so should I take it first all the
spiders out the way and then if I can
get the motor out I'll bring it to you
that would be brilliant I'll deal with
the Cosmetics the paint and everything
else if you can help me with the
electrics that would be superb that
sounds like a perfect plan good luck
grab the door for me thanks Mark no
[Music]
problem oh oh my I mean look at the rust
in there how has this got so
Rusty that's where the bag would sit
well that is the bag this is the filter
I'll have to find a new one of those so
this red part is the next piece I need
to get out the way say fre screws that I
can see hidden underneath all of this
rust and dirt they are what I need to
undo and then I'll be able to remove
this entire top section and gain access
to the
motor oh it's
moving right that is out screw number
one
yes okay one down two to
go right that means
[Music]
finally yes it's dirty and it's rust and
it's needs a good old clean and a bit of
a paint but it really doesn't look too
bad I'm so relieved now really all I
need to do is work out how this motor is
attached disconnect some wires and get
this motor unit over to mark
another Dynamic duel making strides
towards reversing the ravages of time
are suszie and
will hi Will hey Susie so I've got the
little shoe treated brilliant and I've
done a drawing so that gives me a really
good idea of what I need to make for you
yeah it'd be really helpful and then I
think I can build the shoe around the
form and um hopefully it's going to look
more of how it originally looked well
leave that with me and I will try to
construct something that's going to help
you out okay okay sounds great thanks
[Music]
cool I'm marking
out the sort of rough shape of the shoe
I need to be really careful with this
because it's so easy to remove too much
wood then you have to start again so I'm
going to start cutting on the band saw
get rid of a lot of that waste word then
I can start refining that detail and
that shape on the
[Music]
[Music]
sander well it looks like a little
wooden foot to me but the moment of
truth is to see if it fits the
shoe let's have a
look oh that's nice it's almost there I
just need to do a few final twixs with
some sandpaper a liquor polish then I
can hand over to
[Music]
[Music]
Susie so there's the
mhm that's the form look at that that is
beautiful this is going to make my very
difficult job a lot easier now I can
build the back of the shoe around that
form so grateful thank you you're
welcome can't wait to see when it's
finished brilliant
thanks now I've got this little form I
can get on with repairing this little
shoe and line what's left of the
original leather it's going give it a
lot of strength back rather than try and
maneuver the lining leather inside the
shoe I'm going to wet mold it onto this
little form the beauty of doing a wet
mold like this is that it allows you to
stretch the leather around a
mold and as it
dries it should dry in that shape
[Music]
in normal
instances I have time to glue it down
and reposition
things because this is so delicate I
really don't think I have the luxury of
being able to pull the lining off and
repositioning I have absolutely no room
for error at
[Music]
all I can just straighten out these
creases here and get a really good bond
to the
glue I'm not going to say it's a huge
success just yet but deep down inside
I've got that
little little fire burning going
think you got it right
[Music]
girl so I've got a very very sharp
scalpel knife here and I'm hoping just
with a little bit of pressure it will
cut through the lining leather and I'll
be able to cut these holes out very
accurately so see what happens here
wow that's one whole cap and I've got
one two three more to
[Music]
do as one item takes shape another in
need of repair arrives Sue Baler from
Winchester accompanied by granddaughter
Emily has a treasured heirloom requiring
Ceramics restorer ktan Ramsey's delicate
touch hello
hello hi take a seat thank
you lovely to meet you both you what
have you
brought it's my granny's dolls te- set
and Granny was born in 1880 I don't know
when she got it but I expect it's quite
some time ago
what was granny called Granny's called
Annie Annie Banks gosh what a pretty set
I have loved it for ever since I can
remember because I always had lots of
dolls and she would obviously let me
play with it we always were there every
Sunday lunch um it was a close summary
so I loved being around there when I was
three I just said to my mother I want to
go and see Granny's tea set the journey
must have been over a mile I had to go
along a main road is this sorry is this
on your own on my own my goodness fre
yeah so up the drive I go knock on the
door her housekeeper comes to the door
and she says your granny's out and shut
the door no in my face so my mother said
I was still crying when I got home oh
that's so sad which I can well believe
even at 3 it was something that I just
wanted to go and see I would spend hours
playing with my dolls with this te set
talking to my dolls and probably
thinking they were answering me sounds
lovely does
indeed how did this te- set get broken
my granny died when I was in my 20s
which would be about
1959 and uh my aunt who was a spinster
Aunt lived with my granny all her life
so everything stayed in the house as it
was was and then 10 years on the
burglary happened oh Cy and a lot of
items were stolen including this tea set
this possibly was at the top of the bag
and um some of it dropped out and my
sister and mother found it outside my
Granny's house sometime after the
burglary what was the actual damage that
happened can you show me or so I think
this one's probably the worst arage
isn't it yeah so it's quite mashed up on
the side and then got some bits that
been tried to be stuck back together
yeah so they were literally just lying
on bits bit BR pieces I should think it
was my mother that tried to glue things
together again and
so there it all stayed and then when my
aunt died I would be then in my
50s and so finally in its broken state
it came to me and I've now had it 30
years so it's really been a love affair
with it really has yeah Emily where
where do you fit into this story so I've
always been curious about it and then
obviously a couple of years ago granny
told me the story and then I can see how
much she loves it so therefore it means
a lot to me as well what is it that you
would like me to do with the t- set well
if possible I'd love to see what is
there made to look a little bit like it
was originally then that would be
marvelous because I hardly remember
it and um you know if the little jug
could look a little bit better without
great big cing it would just give me the
memories of something I've always LED
yes
yeah I can't wait to have a really good
look at it if you'd like to leave it
with me I will try and do the best that
I can that would be lovely kir thank you
very much it's a great pleasure yeah see
you soon thank
you I think by having the tea service
restored it will make everything
complete for me and just feel things are
as they were be nice to get it fixed and
hopefully one day my children will be a
to play with
it this is such a sweet little tea set I
think it's beautifully decorated and I
can absolutely understand how a small
child would love to have little tea
parties with their dolls and teddies
it's made of Earth andwar and it's got
an underglazed decoration with this
beautiful soft blue pretty much half of
it so six pieces are quite badly damaged
and I'm going to have to try and take
this old adhesive off and tidy up these
joins make up the missing sections and
put the design back in I'm going to try
with the steam cleaner and see if that
just softens this adhesive and I can
make a start trying to get the pieces
apart
[Music]
it's also full steam ahead for Mark at
his
bench as he puts the classic vacuum's
earing mortar through its OT
if I just do a little bit of a spray in
here don't need a lot and just Boogle
that there you go one switch while Dom
focuses on giving its body work a much
needed
overhaul now it's really down to me to
try and Tackle all of this rust and
flaky paint I need to strip all this
back there is no way I can save the
original paint remove all of the rust
and then put a nice new coat of fresh
paint on that is as close matched to
possible as the original there's only
one very thin layer of paint over this I
think I'm going to try and chemically
strip it first then I can hand sand and
remove the rust before I paint it
[Music]
oh that was satisfying wasn't it all of
that paint just peeling off like that
brilliant you can see all of these
little rusty areas you can see where
there's there's been a chip in the paint
That's exposed the steel underneath the
water has then crept underneath the
paint and the rust has really started to
set in this is the main reason why I had
to remove all of the paint this process
has worked so well I'm going to do the
same thing on all the other metal
painted parts I'll get everything
stripped back to a nice bare metal
finish okay I'm ready to remove the top
cover of the motor I've disconnected all
the wires so tried to do it gently it
doesn't always work that way there we go
yes it did each of these single little
copper strips are connected to this wire
which makes this rotate all this needs
to be cleaned polished the reason why
you do do this CU if you get all debris
in between these little pieces of copper
it can actually short out then the motor
will not rotate properly will not give
you the amount of suction required and
therefore you won't be picking up all
the
dirt things have taken a slight
downwards turn for ca's vacuum cleaner
I've got all the paint stripped off and
I've soaked all the bare metal pieces in
a a removing solution overnight the
areas where it was Rusty has corroded
away and just left me with holes and
when we plug that in for the first time
I want it to hover off the table and
Float across the side and if there's all
these extra holes the motor and the fan
are not going to be working as they were
originally intended to it's going to be
pulling in air from the sides through
these holes so it's really important
that I get all of this sealed up as it
should be so I'm using solder like a
lead
solder once it's on there it becomes
part of the metal so you know it's not
like a filler that's going to break and
crack and chip off it needs to be moled
enough so that it will flow but not too
molten cuz then it will just fall
through the hole this is thankfully
going really well and I'm just working
my way around it's all inside this sort
of circumference of this inner panel so
I'm just methodically working my way
around filling all of the little pin
[Music]
holes I I am at the moment reassembling
everything so I can do an electrical
bench test I've done individual tests on
each of the components but until it's
all fitted together and you plug it in
that's the only real time you know for
sure proof is in the
pudding I've connected this unit up this
is called a variac this allows me to
slowly turn the Main's voltage up at a
control level and I've got to gently
hold that here we go that's only at 37
volts
but there we go yes that's good whoa
whoa whoa whoa you go down the other way
yeah no that's good yeah that's great
that actually shows it's fully
functional and when given the
opportunity to have full power that
baby's going to take off that can now go
over to Dom and relief for me I'm glad
to say
[Music]
all these bits of the vacuum cleaner are
looking good all the primer done sanded
back ready for the Final Cut of paint I
spent some time to match the color so I
can be sure that the paint that I'm
using is as close as I could possibly
get to the original it's going to look
like the vacuum cleaner that CA
remembers
[Music]
also taking her final steps towards
completion is
Susie I've really enjoyed working on
this little
shoe a lot more than I was actually
anticipating because of its condition
really wasn't convinced I would be able
to get to this point but with this
lovely form that will has
made it has really become such a joy to
work on both the strap and the Buckle
are in place just have to punch a few
holes and it'll be ready to give back to
[Music]
John with this little lost shoe arrived
at the barn it was in tatters and the
back had worn away a treasured Talisman
carried by his father and grandfather
through two world wars Jonathan has
returned to collect it feeling a little
apprehensive and quite know what to
expect I wasn't quite sure exactly what
she was going to do to it so that
perhaps makes it even more
exciting hello John it's lovely to see
you again how you doing you're all right
very well thank you excited I am truly
excited well I'm excited for you to see
this cuz this is one of the repairs that
I thought was impossible I mean the
condition you brought it in was just
yeah had its fair share of wear and tear
over the years that's for sure but
I'm oh want to see what she's done I'm
sure it's well let's see Susie
okay oh
wow oh man can I pick it up
I'm
speechless oh
dear
oh I reckon
that's that's my grandfather saw sitting
in the mud yes all those years ago I to
thank you it's extraordinary I didn't
think you were going to do any of
this it's just so important
it's the only link we have between my
grandfather who I never met M he passed
on to my dad it's just something
wonderful for the family and it's it
it's a worthless little shoe yeah but to
us it's Priceless it's just
extraordinary and this is just uh my
most treasured position see your face
and you're happy um that means the world
to me you know from the bottom of my
heart I'm forever grateful thank you
Jonathan it's been an honor to have
little Shu in here and for you to honor
your grandfather and your father's
journey in like second and first world
war wow yeah and keep them both safe
well let's get it home safe now let's
get it wrapped up
[Music]
okay thank you both thank you so much
pleasure take care byee bye byee
[Music]
he was happy unbelievably yeah I'm
feeling completely overwhelmed I'm
speechless I'm lost for
words I think my family would say it's
not possible but it's it's definitely
possible nothing could have prepared me
for this nothing it's it's brilliant
[Music]
[Music]
kton has removed all signs of the
discolored repair from the Victorian
dolls t- head but her work is far from
done I'm going to be using a two-part
epoxy resin to bond the pieces together
it's quite difficult to get really nice
joins on this and that's because the
edges with handling have been worn and
it just makes it a little bit more
difficult to align the
pieces you can't rush it and if it's not
right you need to undo it and redo it
[Music]
The Jug was definitely the most
difficult piece to put together the next
stage is to start the color filling
process I'm going to use a piece of wax
that I'm going to place behind and fill
onto it
I'm just going to place it into some
warm
water just need it to be really quite
malleable but not
melting that's great I'm going to be
using an epoxy resin and I'm going to
bulk that with some fumed silica and
some glass Bubbles as well and they're
basically a ner fillers that will enable
me to turn the this runny resin into a
paste to get the best results you really
really need to put the time in getting
this
paste as firm as possible but you get a
really lovely
hard and glaze
like look with it
[Music]
this color fill technique to make up the
missing area on the side of the jug has
worked really well giving the piece
stability and a lovely surface now to
put the detail back onto the blue and
white design is a
transfer pattern this particular design
is called cottage and you can see the
little it's almost a a chalet on the
side here I think the most important
factor is to get the blue
correct I've got a ceramic glaze here
and I'm going to go for a powdered
pigment and I'm going to use this little
teapot as a as a
reference these trees that are in this
design I absolutely love they're almost
like Starburst patterns and they're also
quite nice to
recreate just with little dab brush
strokes and I'm confident now that this
quite large area of fill is going to
blend
[Music]
in having reunit the newly painted
classic vacuum with the mended mortar
from Mark and scrubbed the gra ridden
attachments clean Dom's readying for
lift off there we go that is lid the
hinge for the lid in
place perfect well this is a Moment of
Truth Now is it going to work here we go
I'm
nervous oh look
w we got lift off here we go
[Music]
brilliant oh that is a relief that is so
good I'm really really I'm just chuffed
with that absolutely chuffed you know
what I cannot wait to see ca's face when
we fire this thing up and it's hovering
across the bench in
there this clapped out vintage vacuum
spent three decades rusting away in a
garage a momento of her happy childhood
corses back hoping to see it take flight
once again it's a reminder of simpler
times when it didn't take much to make
you
happy okay here we go me and my sister
playing on that childhood is such a nice
pdv oh oh nice to see you thank you and
excited I am really excited I can't wait
to see the vacuum cleaner I'm just
hoping it's going to look really shiny
and new you want to see it then I
definitely want to see it yeah you ready
yeah wow
that looks fabulous that is amazing I
love the color it is just so shiny you
happy yeah I I can't believe how shiny
the pipe is that is how I remember it
sort of looking when I played with it
it's amazing that it can carry on
another life now indeed to your daughter
what do you think she'll make of it she
would love it she'll absolutely love it
I can't believe you haven't asked us to
turn it on yet I was going to just say
are we going to try it yeah we have to
don't we yeah well that's over to you I
just feel nervous doing it even turning
it on
wow it's amazing isn't it can't believe
that it works it does it hovers look
look how easily that moves it was really
good when you're little and you're
pulling that look how smoothly that
moves that's the movement and that's why
it was so much fun cuz you just drag it
around the house is that how you
remember it Hing like exact hovering
like that that's absolutely amazing
unbelievable it really is I'm so
impressed that's great taking you back
to being a kid is it yeah definitely
need a bigger version I know that you
can actually ride
yeah thank you so much you're so welcome
this has been so much fun for both of us
to work on we will make sure we get it
all boxed up and we'll get it sent back
to you see you later
[Music]
bye-bye when I turned it on I just think
the gliding motion of it you remember
exactly that's how it felt when we were
playing with
it I think it's so amazing that this was
such a important part and a fun part of
my childhood and that I can like pass it
on to my daughter and it can sort of
have a New Journey with her and be an
important part of her
life nearly ready to go home is the tiny
te- set with its decorative pattern
restored kton has one final task to
complete
I'm going to retouch over this blue
decoration using a ceramic restoration
glaze it's an acrylic and what it does
is it will draw all of that together and
give a lovely glossy
surface I'm just going to mix a little
bit of water with it
to help it flow onto the surface
well one once this has cured I will go
over the surface with a micr mesh which
is a polishing fabric so I can get it
really really glossy and shiny copying
that glazed surface
beautifully this will be the first time
that Sue will be able to display this
since she's owned it without the t- set
having sections missing and and broken
areas so I can't wait to show it to
her this 18th century dolls T set
inspired many happy hours of childhood
play until it was smashed to Pieces
during a
burglary now Sue's back with
granddaughter Emily hoping to see it
complete
again very
emotional uh it's been 50 years broken
and I really can't believe I might be
seeing it looking right so a little bit
of tration
[Music]
hello s hello C hi Emily lovely to see
you again and you
too welcome back thank you are you
looking forward to seeing the tea set
I'm so looking forward to it I just
loved it so much so it's going to bring
back a lot of memories this yeah well
Emily would you be kind enough to
carefully remove the cloth for me
oh my oh my goodness
me oh oh wow oh Emily it's beautiful
isn't it oh isn't that absolutely lovely
that's amazing look at
the person him that was that was just
holes and this was all
glued you can't even tell it's been
smashed
no it's as if it's never been broken no
it really is yeah absolutely this how
you remembered it yeah absolutely lovely
sitting at granny you know that all I
wanted to do was go and play with this
te set and um yeah I'm it's just uh I
don't know I've just loved it so much
always and I hope now might go to a six
Next Generation family hopefully yes
it's absolutely lovely if you're happy I
will pack it up for you and bring it out
thank youever so much been a great
pleasure byebye bye-
bye it was so amazing to see it complete
just hard to get my head around it
really um 50 years of it being
broken unbelievable that now it's so
it's just so exciting so exciting it's
so nice to see part of granny's
childhood and it probably exactly how it
was when you were playing with them B
