hi everyone welcome to the roof at Park
South yes that's right I'm at a hip bar
for this video so why are you hanging
out a bar Rachel you might want to know
I have a problem I'm going to confess to
you today I tell you guys all my secrets
I have no idea how to order cool
cocktails um I always order vodka rocks
this is like not a very interesting
drink I went spent a whole summer
drinking comparan soda which I actually
hate because I thought it sounded really
cool and I am here with Ted Kilpatrick
the beverage director at the roof at
Park South and he's going to teach me a
few things and hopefully I'll walk away
being able to order something um a
little less you know
embarrassing okay so now you know my
dirty secret I only ever order vagara
with lemon what should I be drinking
instead well
that's a tough starting point because
vodka is such a blank slate it doesn't
really give me as your bartender any
insight into what you like or don't like
because what I know that you prefer is
something that tastes like nothing it's
odorless colorless flavorless by law
okay so someone like me walks in totally
lovely but totally clueless um what kind
of questions do you ask to like get them
there well I'm trying to take as many
things just off the table as I possibly
can right away so are there things that
you hate right are there spirits that
you hate you have a bad experience
within or Rum or whiskey or something
like that because then immediately I'm
not even going to think about those
things again then I ask a question of do
you like it drier do you like it sweeter
and do you want Citrus do you want no
Citrus do you want to be stirred and
clear like a martini or like a Manhattan
or do you want it to be shaking and
refreshing and crisp and bracing like a
margarita or a daquiri or something like
that okay and that's a that's a good
start and then I would talk a little bit
more in detail about aversions can we do
like a lightning round of like all the
questions I've ever wanted to ask a
bartender I'll do my
best what is a high ball glass and how
come sometimes people ask for them
broadly speaking a high ball glass is
intended to accentuate effervescence so
you would put something that's Fizz is
it ever okay to use a straw yes the
straws came out in a time in early
America where uh people's teeth weren't
very good and it was actually it was a
way to drink things that were over IED
without your teeth being overly
sensitive and in pain he knows
everything sometimes you will get these
like fancy ice cubes like they get one
giant Square Ice Cube and like I never
seem to get those you should order
something that is intended to be sipped
slowly over a long period of time
because it melts more slowly and it
keeps the drinks keeps the drink colder
and it doesn't over
dilute maybe now we could make some
drinks with the things we've learned
absolutely so one of them is my desert
island drink um and it's the margarita

so delicious drink number two is a drink
you've probably heard of maybe even had
a version of but probably never had a
proper version of and it's um called a
Tom Collins oh yes I feel like um it
reminds me of The Great Gatsby yeah I
could see that it's a great kind of
drinking in the lawn drink yes I do like
to drink in the lawn Etc watch polo
indeed mhm yeah with my diamonds we must
tell Gatsby of this

pretty fun to make maybe my favorite
ever um I learned about the Tom Collins
she never had before I got to try an
amazing Margarita I learned so much
about how to order drinks and talk to
bartenders um so thank you Ted how great
