you want to see from me because I read all of your
comments and I get my ideas from you guys.
Over the past few months I’ve received a
ton of DM’s on Instagram asking me to try
5 Days of DIY Makeup.
And to be completely honest, I avoided this
topic for a really long time because I don’t
really know that much about regular makeup,
let alone DIY makeup.
But then I took a moment and I thought about it and I was like,
“Lucie, that is exactly what this series is about!”
I’m not an expert on any of the topics that
I dive into in Try Living With Lucie.
I just do my research and I learn about it
and then I try something.
And that’s the point.
So I took to the internet and I did
a ton of research and I discovered so many different
DIY makeup techniques that I’m going to
try out this week and share with you.
I also decided to turn this into a challenge
whereby I’m only allowed to wear the DIY makeup
that I make this week.
So as you can see I’m starting out on Monday fresh-faced.
Day one!
Oh, sorry.
I started out today with a product that I was most excited to
make: a lip kit.
For this recipe I followed YouTuber Yvette Polanka’s tutorial for a
DIY Kylie Jenner Lip Kit.
I mixed a matte liquid
foundation with a matte eyeshadow and then stirred them together.
However much foundation
you pour in is how much lipstick you’re gonna get
and then the eyeshadow is used to
color it.
On my wrist, I swatched my favorite Kylie Lip Kit color.
And then I swatched my version next to it to see how the
colors were different.
Then based on that, I knew what
other tones I needed to add in to achieve
my desired color. Once I had my color I added
some olive oil in to smooth it out, and then
I spooned it into an empty pot.
I put it on and I really, really liked the
final texture and color.
Truthfully, it was very similar to my Kylie Lip Kit
but it just didn’t get that dry, crumbly feeling that the
Lip Kit sometimes gets. Next, I found
a recipe for a DIY peppermint lip balm
on Refinery29.com that calls for ¾ cups of coconut
oil, ¼ cup of melted cocoa butter,
and ¼ cup of beeswax.
I heated that together in a small saucepan,
and then I poured peppermint
oil into a jar and swirled it around a bit
before adding the mixture to it.
I let it harden in the fridge for 20 minutes
before trying it on,
and then I tested it out and it is
officially my new favorite lip product.
I was looking at my face in the mirror this
morning and I noticed that my skin was looking
a little blotchy, so I decided that what I
needed most today was some sort of foundation
and coverup situation to smooth everything over.
Very necessary. I think it looks pretty
good now. I really liked how I made yesterday’s
lip balm entirely from scratch
using non-makeup ingredients. So I wanted
to replicate that and make a very light foundation
powder entirely from scratch. Once again,
there were no exact measurements for this,
I was just mixing different ingredients together
to get the right color tone. So I added cocoapowder for a bronzing glow,
beet powder for a blush look,
and turmeric powder which can reduce
acne-causing bacteria. The powder went on
very smoothly, and interestingly enough once
all the ingredients were mixed together they
each lost their individual smells
so the mixture together was entirely odorless.
It gave me a little natural color.
I like it.
Next I followed Yvette Polanka’s Youtube tutorial for a
DIY EOS concealer.
I removed the original EOS lip balm from the case, then
popped out the grate, and then cleaned
the EOS container and set it aside.
Then I mixed together beeswax, coconut oil, and liquid
foundation and popped it into the microwave
at 30 second intervals.
Once it was all mixed, I put the grate back into the bottom of the
EOS container, poured the mixture in,
capped it and then popped it in the freezer.
I kept it in there for 30 minutes and pro-tip:
store it upside-down if you want to achieve
that dome shape on the top.
And not to toot my own DIY EOS concealer horn
but when I opened it about 30 minutes later, it was perfect.
Perfect!
It went on a little sheer so next
time I’ll probably use more concealer and
less coconut oil. It does not stay in formation
unless you keep it chilled, so keep this in
the fridge.
So today I decided I wanted to dive into one
aspect of my daily makeup routine that is
usually so essential for me: eyebrows.
I think I said it in my “5 Days of No Makeup”
video but, if I had to pick one type of makeup
to wear everyday, just one, it would be brow powder.
I started out super easy today, and
I just wanted to see what it would look like
if I used nothing but raw organic cocoa powder
as brow powder.
I have never thought to do this before,
and I don’t know why because I’m a huge
chocolate person. Huge.
But it was not a bad technique.
Plus it’s all natural, and who really uses all of the cocoa powder in their
pantry before it expires anyway? Am I right?
Then I took it up one level and I made
myself a DIY brow gel.
Sometimes I actually do really like that full brow, bushy, messy look.
Other times I just want them to sit
still and calm down.
I got this idea from the Youtube channel ModaMob and
I just mixed hair gel with
brown powder. And it’s so simple! You just
mix them together until they’re blended,
twirl a wand into the gel, and apply it. Because
it's tinted it also helps fill in the gaps,
and this really worked just as well as any
store bought brow gel.
I would highly recommend it.
Quite a nice tint.
Notice anything different about me?
Maybe about my eyes?
I got eye makeup on!
It’s been three days of wearing only DIY makeup,
and even though everything I’ve made this
week has brought me a little bit closer to
having on a full-face of makeup, I haven’t worn
anything yet that’s really dramatically
changed my look. Until today.
So I wanted to make products today that would really add that final pop.
Eyeliner and mascara.
I started out with this blue eyeliner using
a tutorial I found on Carli Bybel’s Youtube
channel. You mix eyeshadow in whatever color
you want your eyeliner to be with MAC Fix
Plus. The Fix Plus helps turn the eyeshadow into
a liquid form, and gets it all smooth so that
you could apply it with a really skinny brush.
I’m usually a black eyeliner girl but I’m
loving the blue, and I’m thinking this is
my new thing.
Next, making the mascara was the most difficult and involved process of yhe entire week so far.
This idea came from
a Youtube Channel called Alternative Channel.
I started by placing slivered almonds on a
pan and then heating them up until they became
completely burned and black. Once the almonds
were charred, I put them into a baggie and
I crushed them using the back of a water bottle.
I mixed them with one teaspoon of Vaseline, and then the original recipe wanted me to
heat this mixture on a stovetop with a double
boiler, but I decided to just throw it in
the microwave.
Once the mixture had a better consistency from the heat, I spooned it into
a syringe and then I pumped it into an old,
cleaned-out mascara container.
TBH, this mixture stunk.
You would have thought that something died.
So I don’t know how I felt about this
product because of how it smelled, but it
did work nicely!
I mean, it looks like regular mascara.
And it’s pretty cool. It was made out of burnt almonds.
I literally have a smokey eye.
For my final day I felt
that I had made enough DIY makeup products
for an everyday, natural look. So I decided
instead of making another makeup product,
I’d make my own DIY makeup remover.
I found this recipe on Refinery29.
Have you heard of it?
Place 12 cotton squares into a sterile
mason jar, and then set it aside.
Mix ⅛ cup of melted coconut oil, with
⅛ cup of apricot kernel oil, three drops of
lavender, and two drops of vitamin E oil.
I poured the mixture over the cotton pads, and
then poked around a little to make sure they
absorbed as much liquid as possible.
Refrigerated the pads for at least one hour
and then tested it out.
The mixture smelled really good and
it worked really well, but it was definitely
a little bit oily
so it requires you to wash your face with soap and water
after using it.
Whaaat?!
And after I trial tested the makeup
remover pads, I actually put
all of my DIY makeup back on because it’s
Friday nigh and I’m going out in DIY
makeup! Can’t stop me!
I officially made it through the entire week wearing only DIY makeup products.
I feel like I gave my skin
a much needed rest from the typical makeup products
that I use everyday which are a lot
heavier, and are not necessarily all-natural.
Let me know if you have anymore DIY makeup
ideas that I can test out.
And as always, comment below and let me know what you want
