The European Union is accelerating the
use of AI, drones, robots, and
autonomous systems in defense. A notable
point here is that beyond investing in
new technologies, the EU is also
changing how they are tested and
developed, drawing more directly on
lessons from the conflict in Ukraine.
One of the key initiatives is the Brave
Tech EU, a defense technology
partnership between the European Union
and Ukraine. The program brings together
Ukraine's ability to develop and adapt
technology rapidly on the battlefield
with Europe's research, investment, and
industrial capacity. Uh companies,
startups, and uh tech teams can test
emerging systems with military forces in
conditions close to real combat. In
August, the EU opened a new Brave Tech
EU selection round. Trials include
autonomous and swarm attack drones
operating under electronic jamming,
ground sensor networks, and systems
linking target detection directly to
combat platforms. A key requirement is
that technologies can be adapted in the
field through software updates, payload
changes, or hardware fixes and quickly
returned to testing. The trials are
expected to take place in Germany and
Romania this November with armed forces
directly involved.
There is a broader shift taking place in
Europe's defense thinking. Military
technology must not only be advanced to
but also developed, tested, and adapted
at a faster rate. Yet, turning a
promising technology into something that
can be deployed at scale remains a major
challenge. Our Europe correspondent
reports.

Europe has no shortage of technologies
that could shape the next generation of
weapons. Germany and other EU countries
are strong in precision engineering,
automation, sensors, robotics, and
dual-use technologies, but Ukraine has
exposed a critical weakness. Advanced
technology alone does not guarantee
battlefield advantage. A highly
sophisticated system may have little
impact if it takes years to develop and
can only be produced in small numbers.
By contrast, drones and electronic
warfare systems may need to be
redesigned within weeks as new
countermeasures emerge. That reality is
forcing Europe to rethink how defense
technology is developed.
>> Obviously, there is one objective that
we're having to on our side is to create
synergies between the tech industry and
the defense industry. Uh this has been
also highlighted in the industry
transformation roadmap. So, what is the
objective here is that of course we want
AI and tech to be embraced by the
defense industry. This is needed. We see
it in Ukraine on a daily basis, but all
of this has to be done in um um a secure
and in a responsible way.
>> But, AI only becomes military power when
it can move from the laboratory to the
production line.
That transition has often been slow in
Europe.
Testing, procurement, and large-scale
production can take years. The EU is now
trying to bring startups, civilian
technology companies, and dual-use firms
closer to the defense sector. At the
same time, it is deepening cooperation
with Ukraine, where technologies are
being tested and adapted directly
through battlefield experience.
>> And we can provide both
defense industrial bases with the
impetus needed to decisively step up
investment and production.
>> This is where the competition is also
changing.
The question is no longer simply who has
the better AI model or the smarter
robot. It is who can turn those
technologies into hundreds or thousands
of systems fast enough, cheaply enough,
and with the ability to keep improving
them as the battlefield changes.
Military strength was one measure mainly
by the number of tanks, aircrafts, or
missile a country possesses. AI is
adding a new measure, the speed at which
technology can be turned into
operational capability. For Europe, the
race is therefore not only about
building smarter system, it is also
about producing them faster, in greater
numbers, and adapting them more quickly
than the adversary.
