Little Fox.
>> When Zan awoke, he wasn't sure where he
was.
It was dark and a little chilly.
He rubbed his fingers together to create
a light, but nothing happened. That made
him wake up a little more.
As soon as he looked around though, he
remembered he was in the Hollow. Darb,
Perda, Gliss, and Zing were lying
nearby.
They'd all spent a cold, uncomfortable
night sleeping on the hard ground.
>> Oh.
>> Perda mumbled as she woke up.
>> It's freezing.
>> Indeed, the pre-dawn chill hung over the
swamp like a damp [music] blanket.
Without thinking, Zan tried to conjure
up a fire, but again, nothing happened.
>> Right, magic doesn't work in the Hollow.
>> He reminded himself.
Perda rubbed her eyes.
>> Hey.
>> She said, leaning over and poking Gliss.
>> Is that Darb's jacket?
>> Yeah.
>> Darb sat up and stretched.
>> Gliss was shivering last night, and I
figured she needed it more than I did.
>> That was just like Darb. He was always
willing to give up his own comfort to
help someone else.
Usually, it was one of the things Zan
liked about his friend.
But today, for some reason, it annoyed
Zan a little.
>> Nice of you to offer the jacket to the
rest of us.
>> Perda told Darb sarcastically, obviously
feeling the same way.
Darb didn't say anything, but Gliss sat
up and looked at Perda.
>> Sorry.
>> She said quickly.
>> I didn't ask him to give it to me.
Anyway, you guys are the ones who talked
me into staying out here.
>> What else are we supposed to do?
>> Zan said.
Do you want to go sit in your house all
alone and wait for Morb to come grab
you?
>> As soon as he said it, he regretted it.
Gliss's face fell, and a tear ran down
her cheek. Perda scowled at Zan.
>> That wasn't very [music] nice.
>> Sorry. Zan muttered.
>> What are we going to do?
>> Gliss asked in a shaky voice.
>> Morb blasted through my parents' shield
spell like it was nothing.
>> We've got to look for Baz's diary.
>> Dorb said.
>> And then what?
>> Gliss asked.
>> Even if the diary survived the
explosion, how are we supposed to get it
to the palace?
First City is halfway across Magica.
>> Why don't we take it to the mayor?
>> Dorb suggested.
>> Maybe she'll know what to do.
>> Gliss nodded, looking hopeful for the
first time.
>> Everyone says the mayor is the most
powerful Red in Swamp Bottom.
>> She shot a glance at Zan.
>> Well, except for Baz, but he's retired.
And missing.
>> Perda pointed out.
>> I think you're right about the mayor,
Dorb. She can help us if anyone can.
>> Zan shrugged. He was ready to get out of
the hollow.
Let's worry about all that later.
>> He said.
>> First, we need to find that diary.
>> Morb glared at the old woman facing him.
Her sunken eyes burned with disdain.
>> Why did you come today if you're not
going to help me?
>> He demanded.
>> I can't help you anymore. [music]
>> She croaked in a deep dark voice.
>> What you are doing is too much.
When we made our deal, I never intended
>> That's enough.
>> Morb thundered.
>> Who are you to lecture me about right
and wrong?
You're no better than I am.
>> The old woman's eyes narrowed.
>> Perhaps not.
>> She said in a low ominous voice.
>> But I have lived many years and seen
many things, including the downfall of
others who tried to do more than their
destinies allowed.
>> I believe in making my own destiny.
>> Morb retorted.
>> The woman shook her head.
>> Making your own destiny?
>> She said.
>> Or stealing it.
>> Morb's face [music] twisted with anger.
Ready to send a blast spell flying, he
rubbed his fingers together. The
friction made a crackling sound.
>> You know better than that.
>> The old woman said with a slight smile.
>> Like it [music] or not, you still need
me, Morb.
>> Morb lowered his hand.
>> Perhaps, he said.
But not for much longer.
>> For the first time, the old woman looked
worried.
>> What do you mean? Without my help, you
could never
>> I'm tired of this conversation.
>> Morb interrupted loudly.
He just noticed a swarm of flizzers
zipping in through the window.
>> Leave.
>> The old woman hesitated, her deep-set
eyes studying Morb's face with a mix of
curiosity [music] and dread. Slowly, she
turned and walked out of the room.
When she was gone, Morb stepped toward
the flizzers.
>> What have you brought me, my pretties?
>> he asked. Several of the tiny dragons
were struggling to carry pieces of
paper.
Morb grabbed the papers and examined
them.
A smile spread across his thin face.
>> Perfect, he said.
>> You've done well, my tiny friends.
>> Striding over to the secret eye, he
paused and glanced at the map image
hovering above it.
It was still blank with [music] no red
dots visible at all.
Never mind. The boy couldn't resist
using magic forever.
As soon as Xan slipped, Morb would
[music] be ready. He looked once more at
the blank images in his hand.
One showed the red girl whose parents
now languished in one of his cells. The
other picture was of the tall non-red
who had been with the others.
Morb stuffed both images into the secret
eye alongside the blank image of Baz's
grandson.
Nothing happened. No red dots appeared
on the map.
Morb scowled. He didn't have time to
stand here waiting [music] for those
foolish children to use magic.
His plans were underway and there was
still much to do.
He summoned several trolls.
"Watch the map." He ordered them.
"As soon as it shows the location of the
young fugitives, seize them and bring
them to me."
>> "I hope Zing stays and waits at the
Hollow."
>> Zan said.
>> "I know he wanted to come along,
but I'm afraid he'd attract too much
attention."
>> Zan and his friends were walking to
town. Dawn was breaking over the swamp.
The aurora birds were singing and lights
were coming on in the outlying homes the
kids were passing.
Darb shrugged.
>> "I did my best to convince him to stay."
>> That wasn't very comforting.
The dragon could be unpredictable. Plus,
Zan knew that Zing, like all magical
creatures, hated being anywhere near the
Hollow.
Still, there wasn't much he could do
about it.
They were soon in the more populated
part of town.
>> "Be careful."
>> Zan warned.
>> "We don't know what's been going on
around here since we went into hiding
yesterday."
>> Gliss rubbed her stomach.
>> "Was it only yesterday?
I feel as if I haven't eaten in days."
>> "Me, too, but we can eat later."
>> Zan said.
>> "First, we need to get to my house and
look for that diary.
And quickly, because Morb could have
spies anywhere."
>> Just then, a door slammed nearby.
A dragon scurried into the street and
let out a yip and a puff of steam.
>> [music]
>> It was a vapor bounder, a popular breed
due to its small size and friendly
disposition.
>> "Ozzie, stop!"
>> A voice called. A kid rushed out of the
house and scooped up the lively dragon.
>> "It's Jev!"
>> Gliss exclaimed. Before Zan could stop
her, she rushed forward calling his
name.
>> Jev!
>> Their classmate turned looking
surprised.
>> Gliss!
>> He exclaimed.
>> You're okay. Everyone heard your parents
are, you know, gone.
We assumed whoever took them took you,
too.
>> He almost did.
>> Gliss said.
>> Zan and Darb and Perta saved me.
>> Oh. Jev glanced at the others as they
caught up.
>> Yeah, we thought Zan got nabbed, too.
Especially after what happened to his
house.
>> Jev's tone made it very clear that he
wasn't particularly concerned about the
loss of Zan's house.
>> If you'll excuse us, we've got something
important to do.
>> Said Zan.
>> Jev ignored him.
>> I can't believe you guys are still
around.
>> He said, talking mostly to Gliss and
Perta.
>> Most of the reds in town are gone.
The only ones left are the mayor and a
couple of others who are hiding out with
her at the town hall.
>> So Morb hasn't broken the mayor's shield
spell?
>> Gliss asked.
>> Who's Morb?
>> Jev said.
>> He's the guy who's been taking all the
reds.
>> Perta explained.
>> Wait.
>> Zan put in.
>> We don't have time to
>> It was too late. [music] The girls told
Jev everything they'd found out. Zan
felt anxious as he listened. He didn't
like the idea of telling his enemy all
their secrets.
>> Wait.
>> Jev said.
>> Are you telling me this Morb guy is a
void?
>> He glanced at Darb and smirked.
>> No way. Everyone knows voids are useless
at magic and most other things, too.
>> Darb didn't respond.
>> Zan clenched his fists to stop himself
from giving Jev another set of donkey
ears.
>> We need to keep moving.
>> He told his friends.
>> You'd better be careful.
>> Jev said.
>> A bunch of tiny, weird-looking dragons
have been flying around town stinging
people.
>> Stinging dragons?
>> Darb spoke for the first time since
they'd bumped into Jev.
>> What do they look like?
>> Don't ask me. I didn't see them.
>> Jev said.
>> But I heard they swarmed the school last
night and grabbed some papers or
something from the office.
>> Darb looked at Xan.
>> Those could be the same tiny dragons we
saw in the swamp yesterday.
>> Xan shrugged.
>> Maybe.
>> He said.
But listen, we really need to get
moving.
>> Xan's right.
>> Perda said.
She turned to Jev.
>> Will you do me a favor and tell my
family that I'm okay?
>> Mine, too.
>> Darb put in quietly.
>> Please.
>> Why should I?
>> Said Jev.
>> Please, Jev.
>> Said Gliss.
>> My parents will be going crazy with
worry if it were me.
>> Her lower lip trembled.
>> If they were still around, I mean.
>> Okay, okay.
>> Jev said quickly. I was just kidding.
I'll tell them.
>> Just then, the dragon in his arms
wriggled loose.
>> Hey, get back here, Hazy.
>> He rubbed his hands together, conjuring
up a dragon harness.
Then, he chased after his pet.
Xan reminisced. It felt strange to know
that he couldn't even conjure up
something as simple as that harness
right now.
>> [music]
>> He wasn't used to living without magic.
How did Darb do it?
>> Let's go.
>> He told his friends.
>> We've wasted enough time already.
>> Soon, they were several blocks away.
>> We should have asked Jev to conjure some
breakfast for us.
>> Perda said.
>> Oh.
>> Gliss stopped short.
>> Why didn't I think of that? Maybe we
should go back.
>> Xan stopped,
>> too.
>> We don't have time.
>> Just then, his stomach grumbled, and he
thought of something.
>> Why are we assuming that Perda can't use
magic?
She's not a red.
I'm sure it's safe for her to conjure
some breakfast for us.
>> Do you really think that's a good idea?
>> Darb seemed dubious.
>> That makes total sense, Xan.
>> Said Gliss.
>> Morb's only after reds, right?
Perda can probably do all the magic she
wants and Mor won't care at all.
>> Perda licked her lips.
>> How do you pucker berry pancake sound?
>> Great, Zan said, but hurry.
Perda rubbed her hands together and then
held them facing upward.
A second later, a steaming platter of
[music] food appeared.
>> Yum.
>> Gliss exclaimed.
Just then, a large hulking figure
appeared casting a dark shadow over
everyone.
Then, another figure appeared and
another.
Perda screamed and dropped the plate of
food which shattered at her feet.
>> [music]
>> Trolls!
>> She cried.
