oh my goodness New Zealand is known as 00:00
one of the world's most scenic countries 00:02
and what better way to see it than by 00:04
train in fact Sitting In First Class 00:07
with a glass of sparkling wine kind of 00:09
train is there any better way to travel 00:11
we're about to ride two trains and a 00:13
ferry over 2 days to take us from the 00:15
south island to the top of the North 00:18
Island gosh that's gorgeous welcome to 00:20
Downey live and we're starting this 00:23
morning on the south island in Christ 00:24
Church so welcome aboard kiwi rail one 00:26
of the great journeys of New Zealand all 00:30
right morning morning we all set we're 00:32
all set perfect fantastic 14 just the 00:35
table on the right hand side and one of 00:38
us thank you perfect and I am riding 00:40
today with my old friend Seb do you want 00:42
the window seat or the aisle seat you 00:44
get the window it's too nice look at 00:46
this wow look at the detailing on the 00:48
ceiling this is our menu for the trip 00:51
and you can see where some of the local 00:53
ingredients have come from so including 00:55
the butter the cheese the lamb the 00:57
mushrooms 00:59
all from the island here here we go 2 01:00
minutes early that never happens that 01:02
doesn't happen in 01:05
Canada our journey starts by rolling 01:07
past parking lots and warehouses but 01:09
pretty quickly we get up to speed and 01:12
are offered a hot towel to freshen up 01:13
that's 01:16
okay thank you very 01:17
much this is a warm welcome isn't it it 01:20
is very warm and moist oh my one thing I 01:23
want you to notice listen how quiet it 01:28
is that's pretty good and it's not long 01:34
before I see why this is called one of 01:37
the world's most scenic train rides 01:39
beautiful but we're going to have to 01:44
stop looking out the window for a minute 01:46
because breakfast is served breakfast 01:48
starts with a spinach feta loaf sounds 01:50
delicious yeah looks delicious that's 01:53
really nice and this butter we know 01:55
where it came from thanks to the map 01:57
where was again where was it this is a 01:59
full service train experience and 02:02
there's nothing I like more than eating 02:03
on board a train at full speed thank you 02:05
so much you're welcome oh beautiful 02:08
cheers Mike 02:12
cheers a good coffee all right now we're 02:14
off to a good start oh yeah now the 02:18
views out the window at this point are 02:20
exactly what you'd expect in New Zealand 02:22
an abundance of sheep and lamb as well 02:24
as a few Vineyards which I'm looking 02:26
forward to trying a little later on but 02:28
as comfortable as it is to sit here and 02:31
enjoy it all Seb has a better idea all 02:33
right should we check out the deck oh 02:36
yeah oh yeah there's a deck at the back 02:38
of the train is an outdoor deck space 02:40
which is great for three reasons one it 02:42
gives you room to walk around and 02:44
stretch your legs on board two you can 02:46
get some fresh air throughout the day 02:48
and three it's better for photos as you 02:50
don't get any glare from Windows and you 02:53
can see the whole train ahead of you as 02:56
we go around corners 02:57
and look at this 03:01
backdrop we have only been on the train 03:04
for an hour or so so far and I'm told 03:06
it's only going to get better now it's 03:09
not all just green fields and Rolling 03:11
Hills there are bridges 03:13
too 03:21
holy okay New Zealand's turning up for 03:23
us right now now Seb and I have come 03:26
back to our seats because it's it's time 03:28
for second breakfast more food waiting 03:30
for my coffee to eat this in combination 03:34
dip 03:37
yeah these Green Hills are so peaceful 03:39
like this is a very calming train ride 03:44
wait I just saw a hobbit you saw a 03:47
hobbit now is a good time for a bathroom 03:50
tour oh that's cool I thought it would 03:54
slide in rotates look at that okay right 03:58
away for accessibility this is huge this 04:02
is 04:04
awesome cool now the trick with these 04:07
you have to remember to lock the door 04:09
otherwise someone can open it from 04:11
outside good this is absolutely huge 04:13
it's not that fancy but it 04:18
works but I will give them extra credit 04:20
cuz I this is the coolest bathroom door 04:23
I've ever 04:24
seen look at that 04:26
oh the scenery is changing the scenery 04:31
is 04:33
changing ladies and gentlemen we are 04:34
seeing for the first time the ocean for 04:37
the next few hours we'll be running 04:40
along the east coast with ocean views on 04:42
the right hand side while there's still 04:44
valleys and mountains on our 04:47
left but that's not all there are 04:49
tunnels too look at this view look at 04:52
this view that's what we came to 04:55
see that's what we 04:58
oh look at this long tunnel oh there we 05:00
go wow it's like the California 05:07
coastline this really is one of those 05:10
train rides where you don't know where 05:11
to look do you watch the train snake 05:13
ahead of you take in the ocean or peek 05:15
ahead of the snow capped 05:18
mountains luckily this train has it all 05:20
so you don't really need to decide oh 05:23
it's amazing better than way better than 05:25
I thought what a 05:27
you wow now I thought second breakfast 05:30
was a lot but here we are with third 05:33
breakfast oh my gosh smoked salmon 05:36
poached egg hollay sauce on roasted 05:39
potatoes I don't know where to start 05:43
with this it's quite a few courses on 05:45
today's ride but they're all pretty well 05:47
spaced apart and I've said this before 05:49
but there really is no better type of 05:51
restaurant than one that moves with a 05:53
view like this and what a view what a 05:55
restaurant View 05:58
now whenever we're able to get out and 06:00
stretch our legs for a second I always 06:01
like to take advantage of it we've 06:03
arrived at a train station we can step 06:05
off for a minute but we don't want to go 06:07
too far what a 06:08
view we can come out see the front of 06:10
the train which is pretty amazing you 06:13
can see this the ocean right there and 06:15
the mountains in the background but I 06:17
get so anxious that the Train's going to 06:19
leave without us so uh I'm just going to 06:21
dash back to the 06:23
door okay okay 06:24
okay as beautiful as this place is I do 06:28
not want to be left behind here here we 06:31
go where's Seb where's Seb SE Seb oh 06:36
they almost left me 06:41
there no one waves any you mate everyone 06:43
Wes there we go thank 06:47
you back to the ocean 06:52
news this water looks so turquoise and 06:55
tropical it's a incredible I would I 06:58
wouldn't have guessed we're in New 07:01
Zealand oh my goodness I really don't 07:02
know which side to look at we got 07:05
mountains on one side and ocean on the 07:06
other where the 07:09
cows I mean I don't know where else in 07:17
the world you can see all of that in one 07:20
shot 07:21
I mean it's got everything it's even got 07:31
highways we spending more time outside 07:34
than on extra seats yeah 07:36
yeah that is true we're not spending 07:41
much time in our seats at all you pay 07:43
for your seats but really all you need 07:45
is this outdoor car because this is a 07:47
Scenic rail experience we booked it to 07:49
see the scenery of New Zealand and it 07:52
has absolutely delivered so 07:55
far just ignore the crazy wind hair I 07:58
mean I'm really enjoying it out there 08:01
that's the whole point of this so this 08:02
is Scenic class and it is very Scenic 08:05
they still have the huge Windows they 08:07
have a couple of 08:09
4x4 tables uh and then the rest of it is 08:11
sort of 2 by two seating while Scenic 08:14
plus is what we've Chosen and that comes 08:17
with higher end food white tablecloth 08:20
service and all of 08:22
that wow just doesn't stop I thought we 08:25
left the co behind but now it's back 08:28
this is really incredible I've seen some 08:30
fantastic train trips in my life and 08:33
this 08:34
is this is up there with one of the best 08:35
I agree I haven't done as much as you 08:38
but and the experience only continues to 08:40
get better oh thank you Sasha you're 08:43
welcome we are celebrating a 60th 08:46
wedding anniversary 08:48
congratulations Cheers 08:51
Cheers Cheers guys cheers with our new 08:55
train friend 08:58
yeah is there any better way to travel 09:04
than sparkling wine on a train by the 09:07
coast I don't think so I don't think so 09:09
starting at 9:00 yes 09:11
starting and we won't tell you what time 09:14
this is right now but let's just say we 09:16
haven't had lunch yet now I have to say 09:18
these lovely ladies to our left are from 09:21
New Zealand and they're friends they 09:23
decided to take a train trip together 09:25
and seeing this really gives we hope 09:27
that maybe seven I still in the future 09:29
will be riding trains together at their 09:32
age I hope our lunch doesn't come out 09:35
too 09:37
salty oh my go 09:39
oh oh wow ni wild rice and chicken wild 09:43
rice and chicken that's thank you so 09:47
lovely okay now this is our last meal on 09:49
board this 09:52
train so we have wild rice with 09:53
chicken and New Zealand s Blan from the 09:57
region here bon 10:00
bon the views never stop they never stop 10:04
oh here's a winery could it be could it 10:09
be probably not but same region as we 10:12
finish our lunch and even a dessert 10:14
there's more dessert there's more view 10:17
more water Seb do you know why this 10:20
dessert reminds me of Canada nope it's 10:23
moose 10:26
I don't know if I'm making Everyone 10:31
likes your puns yeah I don't know if I'm 10:33
making friends or losing friends out 10:35
here the train is still pulling us along 10:36
getting us even closer to the town of 10:39
pikon which has just comeing to view now 10:41
along with the fery so we're coming into 10:43
the town of pikon now which is where 10:45
we're going to get off the train and 10:47
onto our Ferry for the afternoon I'm 10:49
excited for the ferry yeah this is it 10:52
this is us us arriving at the 10:54
platform cool it's a modern day 10:57
turntable 11:01
wow I don't know if I've ever seen a 11:03
real one like a functional one in real 11:05
life before that's so cool thank you bye 11:07
bye cute all right now we have to go 11:13
find our fairy to go check in let's do 11:16
it see you Sasha thanks guys it's nice 11:18
to meet you nice to meet you man nice to 11:19
meet you enjoy your travels guys you I 11:21
think we're looking for a very large 11:23
boat now this should be a very easy 11:25
connection come out of the train station 11:28
we're looking for the inter Islander and 11:30
it's right there I see it Mike you sees 11:32
it I see it honestly it's it's literally 11:34
next door it couldn't be easier yeah 5 11:37
minute walk 11:39
less oh that was easy wow this looks 11:41
like an airport and I like to see that 11:44
come on man that is good news little 11:47
excitement yeah I know heavy storm thank 11:49
you thank so much the timing of the 11:52
ferry is set to depart pretty much just 11:55
after we arrived by train so we pretty 11:57
much just walked straight onto the 11:59
ferry oh we're on 12:01
board this is a big Ferry the ferry 12:05
itself is huge holy cow there's 10 12:08
levels where do you want to start 12:10
starting to feel like a cruise ship it 12:13
does the interior is very spacious with 12:15
plenty of indoor seating areas okay this 12:17
is 12:20
nice nice cafeteria but we just ate on 12:21
the train so do you want to sit outside 12:24
or inside let's check out how warm it is 12:26
outside all right let's go outside 12:27
oh it's a heavy Dart it is a perfect day 12:30
to be outside but it's not long before 12:33
we're pulling out of 12:35
pikon and that is it we're off so we're 12:36
on the ferry for the next 4 hours 12:39
and couldn't be happier yeah heading to 12:42
the North Island this is going to be 12:44
great gosh it is so pretty here the 12:46
water and Landscape here almost looks 12:49
tropical at times but it's not quite as 12:51
warm as tropical the water look color 12:54
looks so nice I want to jump in I don't 12:56
really have a lot to say about the ferry 12:59
it's a very standard Ferry but we're 13:00
here for this and this is 13:04
delivering the southern section of this 13:07
fery ride has us Meandering along the 13:09
toor ranui sound and alongside a few 13:11
Islands but eventually we come out to 13:14
the open Waters of cook straight this 13:17
only happens twice a day passing our 13:20
sister ship so there's uh one fairy that 13:22
goes out in the morning and obviously 13:24
one that goes back in the morning and 13:26
then we're on the afternoon one can you 13:27
see anyone waving 13:29
Seb they waving back are they waving 13:31
back well I like to think the people 13:34
inside saw me 13:36
waving that's enough for me they all 13:38
waving Mike yeah yeah I think so yeah 13:41
yeah yeah that is the end of the south 13:44
island and that is the tip of the North 13:46
Island we can already see how much more 13:48
populated the north island is in fact 13:51
76% of New Zealand residents live on the 13:54
North Island and we are pulling in to 13:57
the capital of New Zealand the beautiful 14:00
city of Wellington there is Wellington 14:02
welcome let's head in get ready to 14:07
offload see right there 14:09
wow all right Wellington we've made it 14:12
to Wellington now we have to find our 14:16
hotel now the terminal on this side is 14:18
being upgraded so there's a temporary 14:20
luggage pickup area I'm not sure what 14:22
kind of temporary building this is but 14:24
an interesting tent Style 14:27
it's like an airport luggage area in the 14:29
middle of a parking lot just with some 14:33
plastic up to keep it 14:35
dry it's not beautiful but it all seems 14:37
to work and we have our luggage now we 14:40
have to get to town let's go find our 14:42
hotel luckily they have a solution for 14:45
us there is a free shuttle that takes us 14:48
to the train station which we're not 14:50
catching the train today we are going to 14:52
our hotel our train is tomorrow morning 14:53
but we're staying not too far away today 14:55
was a pretty full day with a train a 14:57
ferry and a bus thank you let's check 14:59
the map now now we're going to walk to 15:03
the hotel yeah do we sharing a room I 15:04
don't know I've never seen that's 601 15:07
this is 602 and 15:10
603 and we're 15:12
603 oh okay oh it's nice 15:25
oh 15:30
perfect separate beds but very close 15:31
just the way we like 15:34
them but it does come with a view of the 15:37
train 15:39
tracks okay we only have a few hours 15:40
this evening in Wellington so the one 15:42
thing we have to do the cable car 15:44
obviously as it is one of the top 15:47
visitor attractions in 15:49
town it's surprisingly quiet at the 15:51
moment but this finic carries about a 15:54
million passengers a year and I can see 15:56
why it's like really cute do you want 15:59
the do you want the front or the bottom 16:01
top or the bottom bottom got it found my 16:04
seat 16:08
perfect here we go ladies and gentlemen 16:10
now the cable car only goes about 18 km 16:13
an hour or so we're going to speed it up 16:15
in editing here but it does have some 16:17
nice murals on the way up and I really 16:19
like this tunnel with neon lights that 16:22
is cool has disco lights that is cool 16:25
I told I told you cable cars are cool 16:29
yeah and of course like any finic the 16:32
track splits in the middle uhoh uhoh to 16:34
let the cable cars pass well we only had 16:36
an hour or so to do something before it 16:40
closed but worth it yeah Wellington 16:42
Cable Car approved and after 2,000 ft we 16:45
have arrived at the top of the line it's 16:50
like a very slow Scenic roller 16:52
coaster well we made it up here just 16:55
about it sun set but the sun set's on 16:58
the other side but still what a view 17:00
yeah and now I can see why it is one of 17:03
the most popular attractions here in 17:04
Wellington it's very quiet and peaceful 17:06
yeah and it reminds me a little bit of 17:09
Canada yeah the buildings are a little 17:11
different though like it's like a mix of 17:13
Canada and San Francisco yeah now the 17:15
best part of these types of trips is the 17:18
free time and really not knowing where 17:20
you'll end up tonight's choice of 17:22
restaurant happens to be over a hundred 17:23
years old and has live jazz tonight 17:25
[Music] 17:30
I'd say exploring Wellington was a 17:37
success but we have to get to bed 17:39
because we have an early morning train 17:41
to 17:43
catch there it is there it is literally 17:44
we got to go oh damn we got to go let's 17:49
go let's go oh my my 17:50
suitcase go 17:53
go go go go 17:55
[Music] 18:03
[Music] 18:10
watch out for the Post what 18:24
please oh sorry you're early guys oh my 18:30
sorry sorry let's 18:34
go fair is fair you can have the window 18:37
today really yeah okay looks like we're 18:40
on a romantic train journey it does a a 18:43
bromantic journey oh my goodness I'm 18:46
just taking a look at the menu now and I 18:49
am not used to eating this much we get a 18:51
baked treat a cold breakfast then a hot 18:54
breakfast then lunch a little later on 18:56
followed by a sweet treat then an 18:58
afternoon platter cuz why not then 19:00
straight into dinner plus dessert I 19:02
don't know when we're going to have time 19:05
to be on the back deck when we're going 19:06
to be sitting and eating all day what 19:08
are you talking about you ate that much 19:10
yesterday it feels maybe I'm just still 19:11
full maybe the hobbits were right maybe 19:14
in New Zealand there is second breakfast 19:16
with the cold and hot breakfast I won't 19:18
say no to 19:21
that as long as they're different 19:22
temperatures and we're off all right 19:25
headed north to a 19:27
in 10 hours from now that's right today 19:30
is going to be a full day on board as we 19:32
will be crossing the entire North Island 19:35
and service starts again with a warm tow 19:37
o wow thank you so much say it was 19:40
intimate didn't it 19:43
did dab my sweat 19:46
away need so we're on our way out of 19:48
Wellington past the ferry we rode in on 19:51
we're moving now and are very quickly 19:53
served our first bit of breakfast Chia 19:55
Chia 19:58
honey we are about to cross five 20:00
viaducts and here's the 20:03
first now the spectacular part of 20:08
today's journey is the fact that we'll 20:11
have a little bit more height than we 20:12
did 20:14
yesterday 20:16
wow and with views like these the 20:17
outdoor car at the back is much busier 20:20
today 20:23
o r wow 20:28
rub that's cool along with viu we also 20:37
get to cut through some hillsides with 20:40
longer tunnels today 20:42
too oh my gosh it's lunchtime 20:51
already wow thank you we're having 20:54
quinoa salad with 20:56
with 20:59
lamb I even spotted some Wildlife out 21:04
here that's not sheap too 21:06
wow some more surprising than 21:09
others now I think it's clear today's 21:12
landscape is very different from 21:14
yesterdays and it's hard to pick which 21:16
one is better but this different Flora 21:18
is a sign we've entered the tongariro 21:21
National Park which holds perhaps the 21:23
most impressive feature of of this trip 21:26
oh wow we got a volcano we're cruising 21:29
along a volcanic Plateau which is why it 21:32
feels suddenly so different to what we 21:34
had been seeing but it's not long before 21:36
we move from a natural wonder to an 21:38
engineering wonder the spiral tunnels 21:40
you see those tracks below that's where 21:44
we're going to come out so they call us 21:46
an engineering Marvel we're about to go 21:47
around the top of the mountain into a 21:50
tunnel come un tunnel underneath where 21:53
we are right now 21:56
and then do a big horseshoe curve and 21:59
that is to drop 139 M now I will admit 22:02
for most of us you can't actually see 22:06
much but occasionally you can spot the 22:08
tracks on this spiral 22:10
segment we're going to go through two 22:17
tunnels a short one now we're going into 22:19
the long one with a long 22:22
curve W that's cool now we're going 22:25
around down and then under right yeah 22:28
yeah we're going to come out of the 22:31
tunnel underneath where we 22:32
started pretty that's a long my tunnel I 22:35
guess yeah there there 22:39
go and we were up 22:45
there this is something you really could 22:49
miss if you weren't looking for it but 22:51
on a 10-hour train ride you take all the 22:53
excitement you can get hold on 22:55
that was the tightest corner of our 22:59
entire trip yes the little things you 23:01
got to you got to enjoy the little 23:04
moments on a long train R like this take 23:07
what you get yeah we've got all day yeah 23:10

[English]
oh my goodness New Zealand is known as
one of the world's most scenic countries
and what better way to see it than by
train in fact Sitting In First Class
with a glass of sparkling wine kind of
train is there any better way to travel
we're about to ride two trains and a
ferry over 2 days to take us from the
south island to the top of the North
Island gosh that's gorgeous welcome to
Downey live and we're starting this
morning on the south island in Christ
Church so welcome aboard kiwi rail one
of the great journeys of New Zealand all
right morning morning we all set we're
all set perfect fantastic 14 just the
table on the right hand side and one of
us thank you perfect and I am riding
today with my old friend Seb do you want
the window seat or the aisle seat you
get the window it's too nice look at
this wow look at the detailing on the
ceiling this is our menu for the trip
and you can see where some of the local
ingredients have come from so including
the butter the cheese the lamb the
mushrooms
all from the island here here we go 2
minutes early that never happens that
doesn't happen in
Canada our journey starts by rolling
past parking lots and warehouses but
pretty quickly we get up to speed and
are offered a hot towel to freshen up
that's
okay thank you very
much this is a warm welcome isn't it it
is very warm and moist oh my one thing I
want you to notice listen how quiet it
is that's pretty good and it's not long
before I see why this is called one of
the world's most scenic train rides
beautiful but we're going to have to
stop looking out the window for a minute
because breakfast is served breakfast
starts with a spinach feta loaf sounds
delicious yeah looks delicious that's
really nice and this butter we know
where it came from thanks to the map
where was again where was it this is a
full service train experience and
there's nothing I like more than eating
on board a train at full speed thank you
so much you're welcome oh beautiful
cheers Mike
cheers a good coffee all right now we're
off to a good start oh yeah now the
views out the window at this point are
exactly what you'd expect in New Zealand
an abundance of sheep and lamb as well
as a few Vineyards which I'm looking
forward to trying a little later on but
as comfortable as it is to sit here and
enjoy it all Seb has a better idea all
right should we check out the deck oh
yeah oh yeah there's a deck at the back
of the train is an outdoor deck space
which is great for three reasons one it
gives you room to walk around and
stretch your legs on board two you can
get some fresh air throughout the day
and three it's better for photos as you
don't get any glare from Windows and you
can see the whole train ahead of you as
we go around corners
and look at this
backdrop we have only been on the train
for an hour or so so far and I'm told
it's only going to get better now it's
not all just green fields and Rolling
Hills there are bridges
too
holy okay New Zealand's turning up for
us right now now Seb and I have come
back to our seats because it's it's time
for second breakfast more food waiting
for my coffee to eat this in combination
dip
yeah these Green Hills are so peaceful
like this is a very calming train ride
wait I just saw a hobbit you saw a
hobbit now is a good time for a bathroom
tour oh that's cool I thought it would
slide in rotates look at that okay right
away for accessibility this is huge this
is
awesome cool now the trick with these
you have to remember to lock the door
otherwise someone can open it from
outside good this is absolutely huge
it's not that fancy but it
works but I will give them extra credit
cuz I this is the coolest bathroom door
I've ever
seen look at that
oh the scenery is changing the scenery
is
changing ladies and gentlemen we are
seeing for the first time the ocean for
the next few hours we'll be running
along the east coast with ocean views on
the right hand side while there's still
valleys and mountains on our
left but that's not all there are
tunnels too look at this view look at
this view that's what we came to
see that's what we
oh look at this long tunnel oh there we
go wow it's like the California
coastline this really is one of those
train rides where you don't know where
to look do you watch the train snake
ahead of you take in the ocean or peek
ahead of the snow capped
mountains luckily this train has it all
so you don't really need to decide oh
it's amazing better than way better than
I thought what a
you wow now I thought second breakfast
was a lot but here we are with third
breakfast oh my gosh smoked salmon
poached egg hollay sauce on roasted
potatoes I don't know where to start
with this it's quite a few courses on
today's ride but they're all pretty well
spaced apart and I've said this before
but there really is no better type of
restaurant than one that moves with a
view like this and what a view what a
restaurant View
now whenever we're able to get out and
stretch our legs for a second I always
like to take advantage of it we've
arrived at a train station we can step
off for a minute but we don't want to go
too far what a
view we can come out see the front of
the train which is pretty amazing you
can see this the ocean right there and
the mountains in the background but I
get so anxious that the Train's going to
leave without us so uh I'm just going to
dash back to the
door okay okay
okay as beautiful as this place is I do
not want to be left behind here here we
go where's Seb where's Seb SE Seb oh
they almost left me
there no one waves any you mate everyone
Wes there we go thank
you back to the ocean
news this water looks so turquoise and
tropical it's a incredible I would I
wouldn't have guessed we're in New
Zealand oh my goodness I really don't
know which side to look at we got
mountains on one side and ocean on the
other where the
cows I mean I don't know where else in
the world you can see all of that in one
shot
I mean it's got everything it's even got
highways we spending more time outside
than on extra seats yeah
yeah that is true we're not spending
much time in our seats at all you pay
for your seats but really all you need
is this outdoor car because this is a
Scenic rail experience we booked it to
see the scenery of New Zealand and it
has absolutely delivered so
far just ignore the crazy wind hair I
mean I'm really enjoying it out there
that's the whole point of this so this
is Scenic class and it is very Scenic
they still have the huge Windows they
have a couple of
4x4 tables uh and then the rest of it is
sort of 2 by two seating while Scenic
plus is what we've Chosen and that comes
with higher end food white tablecloth
service and all of
that wow just doesn't stop I thought we
left the co behind but now it's back
this is really incredible I've seen some
fantastic train trips in my life and
this
is this is up there with one of the best
I agree I haven't done as much as you
but and the experience only continues to
get better oh thank you Sasha you're
welcome we are celebrating a 60th
wedding anniversary
congratulations Cheers
Cheers Cheers guys cheers with our new
train friend
yeah is there any better way to travel
than sparkling wine on a train by the
coast I don't think so I don't think so
starting at 9:00 yes
starting and we won't tell you what time
this is right now but let's just say we
haven't had lunch yet now I have to say
these lovely ladies to our left are from
New Zealand and they're friends they
decided to take a train trip together
and seeing this really gives we hope
that maybe seven I still in the future
will be riding trains together at their
age I hope our lunch doesn't come out
too
salty oh my go
oh oh wow ni wild rice and chicken wild
rice and chicken that's thank you so
lovely okay now this is our last meal on
board this
train so we have wild rice with
chicken and New Zealand s Blan from the
region here bon
bon the views never stop they never stop
oh here's a winery could it be could it
be probably not but same region as we
finish our lunch and even a dessert
there's more dessert there's more view
more water Seb do you know why this
dessert reminds me of Canada nope it's
moose
I don't know if I'm making Everyone
likes your puns yeah I don't know if I'm
making friends or losing friends out
here the train is still pulling us along
getting us even closer to the town of
pikon which has just comeing to view now
along with the fery so we're coming into
the town of pikon now which is where
we're going to get off the train and
onto our Ferry for the afternoon I'm
excited for the ferry yeah this is it
this is us us arriving at the
platform cool it's a modern day
turntable
wow I don't know if I've ever seen a
real one like a functional one in real
life before that's so cool thank you bye
bye cute all right now we have to go
find our fairy to go check in let's do
it see you Sasha thanks guys it's nice
to meet you nice to meet you man nice to
meet you enjoy your travels guys you I
think we're looking for a very large
boat now this should be a very easy
connection come out of the train station
we're looking for the inter Islander and
it's right there I see it Mike you sees
it I see it honestly it's it's literally
next door it couldn't be easier yeah 5
minute walk
less oh that was easy wow this looks
like an airport and I like to see that
come on man that is good news little
excitement yeah I know heavy storm thank
you thank so much the timing of the
ferry is set to depart pretty much just
after we arrived by train so we pretty
much just walked straight onto the
ferry oh we're on
board this is a big Ferry the ferry
itself is huge holy cow there's 10
levels where do you want to start
starting to feel like a cruise ship it
does the interior is very spacious with
plenty of indoor seating areas okay this
is
nice nice cafeteria but we just ate on
the train so do you want to sit outside
or inside let's check out how warm it is
outside all right let's go outside
oh it's a heavy Dart it is a perfect day
to be outside but it's not long before
we're pulling out of
pikon and that is it we're off so we're
on the ferry for the next 4 hours
and couldn't be happier yeah heading to
the North Island this is going to be
great gosh it is so pretty here the
water and Landscape here almost looks
tropical at times but it's not quite as
warm as tropical the water look color
looks so nice I want to jump in I don't
really have a lot to say about the ferry
it's a very standard Ferry but we're
here for this and this is
delivering the southern section of this
fery ride has us Meandering along the
toor ranui sound and alongside a few
Islands but eventually we come out to
the open Waters of cook straight this
only happens twice a day passing our
sister ship so there's uh one fairy that
goes out in the morning and obviously
one that goes back in the morning and
then we're on the afternoon one can you
see anyone waving
Seb they waving back are they waving
back well I like to think the people
inside saw me
waving that's enough for me they all
waving Mike yeah yeah I think so yeah
yeah yeah that is the end of the south
island and that is the tip of the North
Island we can already see how much more
populated the north island is in fact
76% of New Zealand residents live on the
North Island and we are pulling in to
the capital of New Zealand the beautiful
city of Wellington there is Wellington
welcome let's head in get ready to
offload see right there
wow all right Wellington we've made it
to Wellington now we have to find our
hotel now the terminal on this side is
being upgraded so there's a temporary
luggage pickup area I'm not sure what
kind of temporary building this is but
an interesting tent Style
it's like an airport luggage area in the
middle of a parking lot just with some
plastic up to keep it
dry it's not beautiful but it all seems
to work and we have our luggage now we
have to get to town let's go find our
hotel luckily they have a solution for
us there is a free shuttle that takes us
to the train station which we're not
catching the train today we are going to
our hotel our train is tomorrow morning
but we're staying not too far away today
was a pretty full day with a train a
ferry and a bus thank you let's check
the map now now we're going to walk to
the hotel yeah do we sharing a room I
don't know I've never seen that's 601
this is 602 and
603 and we're
603 oh okay oh it's nice
oh
perfect separate beds but very close
just the way we like
them but it does come with a view of the
train
tracks okay we only have a few hours
this evening in Wellington so the one
thing we have to do the cable car
obviously as it is one of the top
visitor attractions in
town it's surprisingly quiet at the
moment but this finic carries about a
million passengers a year and I can see
why it's like really cute do you want
the do you want the front or the bottom
top or the bottom bottom got it found my
seat
perfect here we go ladies and gentlemen
now the cable car only goes about 18 km
an hour or so we're going to speed it up
in editing here but it does have some
nice murals on the way up and I really
like this tunnel with neon lights that
is cool has disco lights that is cool
I told I told you cable cars are cool
yeah and of course like any finic the
track splits in the middle uhoh uhoh to
let the cable cars pass well we only had
an hour or so to do something before it
closed but worth it yeah Wellington
Cable Car approved and after 2,000 ft we
have arrived at the top of the line it's
like a very slow Scenic roller
coaster well we made it up here just
about it sun set but the sun set's on
the other side but still what a view
yeah and now I can see why it is one of
the most popular attractions here in
Wellington it's very quiet and peaceful
yeah and it reminds me a little bit of
Canada yeah the buildings are a little
different though like it's like a mix of
Canada and San Francisco yeah now the
best part of these types of trips is the
free time and really not knowing where
you'll end up tonight's choice of
restaurant happens to be over a hundred
years old and has live jazz tonight
[Music]
I'd say exploring Wellington was a
success but we have to get to bed
because we have an early morning train
to
catch there it is there it is literally
we got to go oh damn we got to go let's
go let's go oh my my
suitcase go
go go go go
[Music]
[Music]
watch out for the Post what
please oh sorry you're early guys oh my
sorry sorry let's
go fair is fair you can have the window
today really yeah okay looks like we're
on a romantic train journey it does a a
bromantic journey oh my goodness I'm
just taking a look at the menu now and I
am not used to eating this much we get a
baked treat a cold breakfast then a hot
breakfast then lunch a little later on
followed by a sweet treat then an
afternoon platter cuz why not then
straight into dinner plus dessert I
don't know when we're going to have time
to be on the back deck when we're going
to be sitting and eating all day what
are you talking about you ate that much
yesterday it feels maybe I'm just still
full maybe the hobbits were right maybe
in New Zealand there is second breakfast
with the cold and hot breakfast I won't
say no to
that as long as they're different
temperatures and we're off all right
headed north to a
in 10 hours from now that's right today
is going to be a full day on board as we
will be crossing the entire North Island
and service starts again with a warm tow
o wow thank you so much say it was
intimate didn't it
did dab my sweat
away need so we're on our way out of
Wellington past the ferry we rode in on
we're moving now and are very quickly
served our first bit of breakfast Chia
Chia
honey we are about to cross five
viaducts and here's the
first now the spectacular part of
today's journey is the fact that we'll
have a little bit more height than we
did
yesterday
wow and with views like these the
outdoor car at the back is much busier
today
o r wow
rub that's cool along with viu we also
get to cut through some hillsides with
longer tunnels today
too oh my gosh it's lunchtime
already wow thank you we're having
quinoa salad with
with
lamb I even spotted some Wildlife out
here that's not sheap too
wow some more surprising than
others now I think it's clear today's
landscape is very different from
yesterdays and it's hard to pick which
one is better but this different Flora
is a sign we've entered the tongariro
National Park which holds perhaps the
most impressive feature of of this trip
oh wow we got a volcano we're cruising
along a volcanic Plateau which is why it
feels suddenly so different to what we
had been seeing but it's not long before
we move from a natural wonder to an
engineering wonder the spiral tunnels
you see those tracks below that's where
we're going to come out so they call us
an engineering Marvel we're about to go
around the top of the mountain into a
tunnel come un tunnel underneath where
we are right now
and then do a big horseshoe curve and
that is to drop 139 M now I will admit
for most of us you can't actually see
much but occasionally you can spot the
tracks on this spiral
segment we're going to go through two
tunnels a short one now we're going into
the long one with a long
curve W that's cool now we're going
around down and then under right yeah
yeah we're going to come out of the
tunnel underneath where we
started pretty that's a long my tunnel I
guess yeah there there
go and we were up
there this is something you really could
miss if you weren't looking for it but
on a 10-hour train ride you take all the
excitement you can get hold on
that was the tightest corner of our
entire trip yes the little things you
got to you got to enjoy the little
moments on a long train R like this take
what you get yeah we've got all day yeah
all right let's go get that cheese
platter oh
yeah oh wow thank you say cheese cheese
got to say this cheese plate looks
really gooda but uh I've already had it
before so
too cheesy a little
bit little
bit you're spending a lot of time
looking out the windows it's so look at
the landscape now most of the afternoon
is spent in these seats eating more yeah
cheers man cheers hey good trip good
trip thanks so so far good trip yeah
very good trip thanks for coming now I

Key Grammar Structures

  • oh my goodness New Zealand is known as one of the world's most scenic countries

➔ Passive Voice, 'be known as'

➔ The sentence uses the passive voice ('is known as') to emphasize that New Zealand *receives* the recognition of being scenic, rather than actively claiming it. The structure 'be + past participle' indicates a state resulting from a previous action.

  • and what better way to see it than by train

    ➔ Rhetorical Question, Comparative Structure

➔ This is a rhetorical question, meaning it's not asked to elicit information, but to make a point. The phrase 'what better way' implies that traveling by train is the *most* effective or enjoyable way to see New Zealand. It uses a comparative structure, implicitly comparing train travel to other methods.

  • in fact Sitting In First Class with a glass of sparkling wine kind of train is there any better way to travel

    ➔ Participial Phrase, Tag Question

➔ The phrase 'Sitting in First Class with a glass of sparkling wine' is a participial phrase modifying 'train'. It adds descriptive detail. The sentence ends with a tag question ('is there any better way to travel?'), seeking agreement and reinforcing the speaker's opinion.
