Hello everyone! This is Naoko.
Happy New Year everyone!
Thank you very much for your continued support in 2024.
And in 2025,
We hope to see you again this year!
Well, this video is currently being shot in January.
Speaking of January, there are important holidays in Japan.
There is a holiday called "Coming of Age Day."
Today I would like to briefly talk about Coming of Age Day.
The flow of the story in today's video is
something like this.
First of all, when is “Coming of Age Day”?
Yes, Coming of Age Day is the second Monday of January.
It's the second Monday in January.
This is called the second Monday.
1st Monday, 2nd Monday, 3rd Monday, 4th Monday...!
The second Monday of this year 2025 is
the 13th of January.
The second Monday of January is a national holiday called "Coming of Age Day."
Have you ever heard of "Adult"?
Simply put, this is "adult".
Japanese law sets a certain age called the "age of majority," and
that age is 18 years old.
When you turn 18 years old, you become an "adult."
It is called "adult" or "adult".
In Japan, once you turn 18, you can sign various contracts on your own.
You will be able to make various contracts by yourself, such as making a mobile phone contract,
buying a car,
renting a house...
...
However, people under 18 years old, 17 years old, 16 years old, 15 years old, etc.
These are called ``minors'' or ``minors.''
These minors cannot enter into a contract on their own.
At what age do you become an "adult" in your country?
To be honest, I don't really understand the definition of "adult", but...
At what age do you legally become an adult?
Coming of Age Day is a day to celebrate people who have newly become adults.
"You've become an adult!"
"Congratulations!"
"Good luck from now on!"
On this Coming of Age Day, a ceremony called "Coming of Age Ceremony" will be held.
This is done on a regional basis.
I think it's usually held by city or town.
At this coming-of-age ceremony, the mayor and various other adults
greet the new adults.
People who have recently become adults are called ``new adults.''
We greet them in various ways, such as ``Congratulations to all the new adults!
Please do your best as adults from now on!''
...
When I go to this coming-of-age ceremony,
I see a lot of my classmates from elementary school and junior high school, so
I think there are many people who are looking forward to going to this coming-of-age ceremony.
But of course you don't have to go to this coming-of-age ceremony.
It doesn't matter if you go or not.
I looked it up on the internet, and
it seems that nearly half of the people don't go to coming-of-age ceremonies.
It seems that about 40% of people do not go to coming of age ceremonies.
I also did not participate in the coming of age ceremony.
I went to the venue where the coming-of-age ceremony was being held.
I went to the venue where the coming-of-age ceremony was being held, but
I didn't go inside the hall where the coming-of-age ceremony was being held.
While the coming-of-age ceremony was held inside the hall,
I was chatting with my friends outside and
taking pictures all the time.
Before I knew it, the Coming of Age Ceremony was already over.
When I was taking photos,
said, ``What?! It's already begun and it's already over!''
That's why I didn't participate in the coming-of-age ceremony.
For this coming-of-age ceremony, women often wear a special kimono called
``furisode.''
Because I was wearing furisode,
I met up with friends and took lots of pictures.
By the way, men go to coming-of-age ceremonies wearing suits or hakama.
When I went,
Most of the women were wearing furisleeves, and
most of the men were wearing suits.
When I went to the coming-of-age ceremony, I also wore furisode.
Actually, the law changed three years ago.
Yes, before April 1, 2022, three years ago,
the age of majority in Japan was 20 years old.
So, when I turned 20,
I got the right to vote in elections,
I was able to sign various contracts by myself,
I was able to drink alcohol, and
I was able to smoke cigarettes.
That's why the coming-of-age ceremony was held at the age of 20.
But three years ago, the law changed and
people over the age of 18 became adults.
But even now, you can't drink alcohol or smoke until you're 20 years old.
However, for about 140 years,
in Japan, ``adulthood'' meant someone over 20 years old.
"Adult = from age 20".
So, after all, you're not 18 years old, but
you're 20 years old.
It's an important turning point in your life.
I feel like this is an important point in life.
Therefore, it seems that the coming-of-age ceremony I mentioned earlier is still often held
at the age of 20.
Nowadays, when you turn 18, you are already an ``adult,'' but
It seems that the coming-of-age ceremony is often held when you turn 20.
So recently, the name of the coming-of-age ceremony has changed a bit,
to ``20-year-old gathering,''
and so on.
By the way, the ``tsudoi'' in this ``Tsudoi''
``20-year-old tsudoi'' means ``gathering.''
Well, I think this (the name of the coming-of-age ceremony) depends on the region.
Well then, next. Next, I would like to briefly talk about my experience.
I would like to talk about my coming of age day when I became an adult.
On Coming of Age Day, it was really early in the morning,
and the first thing I did was go to the hair salon.
Probably around 5 or 6 o'clock.
I went to the hair salon before 6 o'clock.
First, I had my hair done.
I had my hair done and my makeup done.
And after that, we put on a special kimono called furisode.
But even though I say ``wearing'' this,
I didn't put on the furisode myself.
I had a special person called a ``Kimono Dresser''
put on the kimono.
Kimono is really difficult to wear.
I can't wear it alone.
That's why there are professional people called ``Kimono dressers'' who
dress other people in kimono.
This dresser dressed me in a kimono,
and the hairdresser did my hair.
After that, I went to the shrine with my family.
I went to a shrine near my house and took a photo there.
After that, I went to the junior high school I graduated from and
took a photo in front of the gate.
I took a photo in front of the
junior high school to say, ``I was a junior high school student before, but now I'm an adult.''
After that,
I went to the venue where the Coming of Age Ceremony was held.
So many classmates
were all gathered there.
Everyone is gathered together, wearing long-sleeved kimonos or suits.
There were a lot of my classmates from elementary school and junior high school, so I said ``It's been a while! How have you been?'' and said hi,
...
and since we were both wearing furisode,
I took a lot of selfies.
Taking photos...
They had their hair done, makeup, and
they were wearing special furisode, so
we all took a lot of photos.
And the coming-of-age ceremony was held in that hall.
As I said earlier, I did not participate.
Could not participate.
After that,
I went back home once.
I went home and
took off my furisleeves.
Walking for a long time while wearing furisleeves is
quite difficult.
So I took off my long sleeves and
"Ah, I'm tired!"
Yes, I took a short break.
I rested for a while at home, and
went out again that night.
Usually after the coming-of-age ceremony,
junior high school members often have an "alumni reunion."
An "alumni reunion" is a gathering of friends who
went to the same school.
This is a gathering.
Alumni reunions are often held at special times, such as 5 or 10 years after graduating from school.
...
It is held at a restaurant, tavern, or hotel.
And since Coming of Age Day is also a special occasion,
class reunions are often held at this time.
And by this time, most people are already 20 years old.
That's why I can drink alcohol.
So while I was drinking with my middle school classmates,
we said, ``Oh, we're not teenagers anymore.
We're old enough to drink alcohol,''
and we all talked a lot.
We talked.
Well, it's like this.
After that reunion, I went home.
This coming-of-age ceremony was the day I felt
``I'm no longer a child''
``I've become an adult.''
And those parents, it's a very important day for them too.
"My child has grown up well and become an adult."
It's a very happy time, isn't it?
It's a very important day when your child becomes an adult.
It's truly a day of congratulations.
Did you all somehow understand what Coming of Age Day is?
So, last is the listening challenge.
I will now briefly summarize today's talk.
There will be no subtitles, so
everyone please listen carefully.
Well then, let's go!
Coming of Age Day is the second Monday of January.
It is a day to celebrate new adults,
new adults.
A coming-of-age ceremony is held on this day, and
new adults gather.
At coming-of-age ceremonies, women wear furisode and
men wear suits or hakama.
After the Coming of Age Ceremony,
I often have a reunion with my middle school classmates.
The age of legal adulthood in Japan has
always been 20 years old, but
the law changed three years ago and
it is now 18 years old.
Now, when you turn 18, you become an adult. I'm an adult.
However, coming of age ceremonies are still often held at the age of 20.
Yes! That’s it!
Do you understand, everyone?
Thank you for your hard work!
Thank you very much for listening till the end today,
!
Goodbye!
