These four great civilizations are the 00:00
Russians, the Germans, the British, and 00:03
the Americans. Now, what's interesting 00:06
about um all four civilizations is that 00:08
they all claim to be the the um ultimate 00:12
Christian civilizations that are here to 00:16
Rome. But because of the differences in 00:18
their geography and their culture, they 00:22
have different interpretations of 00:26
Christianity and Romanness. Okay. So 00:27
let's compare and contrast these four 00:31
great civilizations. The Russians uh as 00:33
you know Russia is the largest land mass 00:36
in the world. It is huge. It is also 00:39
really cold and dark. Okay. So the 00:44
geography um transform the Russian 00:46
character. Okay. Um Germany in contrast 00:50
it is within Europe and it does not have 00:54
the natural boundaries that the other 00:56
nations have. It is always being 00:58
attacked and threatened by adversaries. 01:00
Okay. Um the British it's an island 01:03
fortress. The Americans um are the most 01:07
interesting because it is a continental 01:10
fortress. It is not only invincible. It 01:12
cannot be invaded but also has all the 01:16
resources it needs in order to have a 01:18
thriving modern economy. Therefore, 01:21
America can choose to isolate itself 01:23
from the rest of the world. Okay. Now, 01:25
because of the difference geography, you 01:28
have differences in Christianity and in 01:30
its Romanness. So, the Russians believe 01:33
that they are here to the Bisantine 01:35
Empire and as such they are the 01:38
protectors of something called Eastern 01:41
Orthodoxy. Okay. So to understand what 01:43
Eastern Orthodoxy is, think of 01:46
Augustine. Okay, we read Augustine, city 01:48
of God. So it is a very mystical 01:50
metaphorical 01:53
um collectivist 01:55
attitude towards religion. In contrast, 01:58
the Germans believe that they are here 02:02
to the Holy Roman Empire first initiated 02:04
by Charlemagne and as such they are more 02:08
Catholic than the Russians. Okay. Then 02:11
you have the British who believe they 02:15
are here to the real Roman Empire. Um 02:18
and their religion is anglingism. Okay. 02:21
Remember anglicism there's really really 02:24
little difference between Catholicism 02:26
and in Anglanism when in Anglicanism you 02:28
swear allegiance to the king of England. 02:31
In Catholicism you swear allegiance to 02:33
the pope of the Vatican. Um 02:35
and then you have the Americans who have 02:39
a who believe that they are adheres to 02:43
the Roman Republic. Okay, not the 02:45
empire, the republic before the time of 02:47
Julius Caesar, the best former 02:49
government in the world. Um the religion 02:51
um so the elite is something we call um 02:54
das. Okay. So they believe in God but 02:57
God as someone who is removed from the 03:01
world. You also have many different sex 03:04
of panism. Okay. So the religion in 03:06
America it is very diffuse very diverse. 03:09
Okay. So um different c cultural out the 03:13
the different cultural outlooks will 03:17
also determine their cultural 03:19
identities. So for example the Russians 03:20
um they have the thing that 03:24
differentiates the Russians is they have 03:26
a very dark imagination. So some of the 03:28
greatest literature, some of the 03:31
greatest music philosophy actually comes 03:33
from Russia. So think of Toy Story, 03:35
Docski. In terms of music, you have 03:38
Tchaikovski and Stravinsky. 03:40
Okay, I will also show you that uh the 03:43
Russians produced the greatest 03:47
geopolitical leaders in history. So in 03:48
the 20th century, the greatest 03:51
geopolitical leader was actually Joseph 03:52
Stalin. And I will show you I'll show 03:54
you this is the case uh when we move to 03:56
the 20th century today. The greatest 03:58
yopula leader in the world is Vladimir 04:00
Putin. So there's something about the 04:03
Russian dark imagination that produces 04:04
men of genius to lead their countries. 04:06
Um the Russian cultural identity is the 04:09
idea of mother Russia, the land itself, 04:12
the nation, the people. It is divine. 04:15
All right. And so the main objective of 04:19
all Russian geopolitical leaders is to 04:21
protect its borders from enemies because 04:23
because Russia is so huge and 04:27
encompasses two continents. Um it has a 04:29
lot of geopolitical enemies. Okay. So 04:31
that's the Russian um civilization. When 04:33
we move to the Germans, the Germans are 04:37
really interesting because the Germans 04:39
have also the great human civilizations 04:41
in history. Okay. So rather than a dark 04:44
imagination, the Germans believe in the 04:47
idea of will to power. We will discuss 04:49
this when we discuss German philosophy, 04:52
especially nichi. Okay. But the idea is 04:54
this that we have the capacity to impose 04:56
our will on reality. That's the idea of 05:00
will to power. We don't we are not 05:02
subject to culture. We're not subject to 05:04
reality. There are great men among us 05:06
who can impose their will on all of us. 05:09
Okay? And that's why you have Hitler and 05:13
the Nazis. Okay. Um the what the Germans 05:15
believe in is the idea of limit. Okay. 05:19
Limit. I know this is a hard word. It's 05:22
a German word, but it's actually a 05:24
pretty easy concept. The concept is 05:26
called living space. So throughout its 05:27
history, German, the German people have 05:30
always been invaded, attacked by its 05:33
adversaries. So to protect itself, it 05:35
needs living space. It needs to move out 05:37
and colonize its surrounding 05:41
territories, Poland, uh, Russia, Austria 05:43
and make it more German so that the 05:47
German nation can thrive. Okay, very 05:49
simple concept. Okay, but this is the 05:53
concept that drives the German uh 05:54
military strategy in World War I and 05:57
World War II. Okay, limits Rome. You 05:58
have the British and the British as we 06:01
discussed last class, they are a very 06:04
practical people. The philosophy is 06:06
empiricism and utilitarianism. Okay, 06:08
it's not a question of what is right or 06:10
what is ideal. It's a question of what 06:12
works now. Okay. The British are 06:14
extremely practical. Um the British 06:16
Empire is based on the concept of white 06:19
men's burden. Meaning that the British 06:21
culture is inherently superior to all 06:23
other cultures and as such the British 06:27
have a responsibility to go out and 06:29
civilize and educate and enlighten all 06:30
others. Okay. So this is the philosophy 06:34
that drives the British Empire. 06:36
The Americans are interesting because 06:39
they are a new civilization and they try 06:41
to base their culture on the ideas of 06:45
the enlightenment. Okay. So Rouso Kant 06:47
especially John Lock um their driving 06:50
ideology is the idea of manifest 06:53
destiny. So the idea of manifest destiny 06:55
is that it is the obvious will of God 06:57
for America to control the entire 07:02
western hemisphere. That's why Trump 07:05
today is saying we should take over 07:08
Canada. We should take over Greenland 07:10
because that's always been part 07:12
of the American understanding of the 07:14
world. It is God's will that America 07:17
will eventually control all the entire 07:20
Western Hemisphere. Canada will 07:22
eventually come into America into 07:24
America as well and eventually America 07:26
will drive out all European powers 07:29
including Denmark and Britain from the 07:31
Western Hemisphere. 07:33
Okay. So next class we'll discuss uh 07:35
America in greater detail. Today we will 07:38
focus on the British Empire which is 07:41
founded by William Shakespeare. Okay. So 07:44
we'll discuss William Shakespeare today. 07:46
Uh next week we'll start to focus on the 07:48
Russians and the Germans. Okay. But 07:50
these are the four great civilizations 07:52
that will drive history from from the 07:55
19th century up to today. Okay. And I 07:58
will also show you later on that it is 08:02
actually the conflict 08:05
between these four great civilizations 08:07
that will drive human creativity. 08:09
Science, technology, 08:11
um philosophy. Okay. And that's why from 08:14
about 1800 up until um 2000 you had a 08:17
tremendous 08:22
flowering of ideas and culture. Okay. 08:23
All right. 08:29
