Hello. My name is Emma, and today we are going 00:00
to talk about whether you should move to Canada. 00:03
Many people want to come to Canada. As some of 00:09
you know, I'm from Canada, I live in Toronto, 00:13
and so I thought it would be a great idea 00:17
to make a video about what it is like moving 00:20
to Canada and living in Canada. Many students 00:23
ask me, "Is Canada a good country to move 00:28
to? Is it a good country to immigrate to?" My answer is always, "Well, it depends on 00:32
what your goals are." So, I'm going to talk 00:40
a little bit about that later. Before I talk 00:43
about this video, I also wanted to tell you a 00:46
bit about my background. So, I teach English, 00:49
I have many students from many countries around 00:53
the world, I teach immigrants English, I am 00:56
the granddaughter of an immigrant, so my grandfather 00:59
immigrated to Canada, and I have a lot of 01:03
friends who are immigrants. In fact, more than half of Toronto... More than half of 01:06
the people from Toronto were actually born in other countries. So, we are a place and 01:13
a city of immigrants. So, in this video, I'm going to talk a little bit about life 01:19
in Canada. We'll talk about the first question 01:25
a lot of people wonder, "Are Canadians rich? 01:28
Are there jobs in Canada? What about housing? 01:32
Is it easy to buy a house or find an apartment? 01:35
What are the good things about living in Canada, 01:40
and what are the bad things?" I hope by the 01:43
end of this video, you will have more information 01:46
to help you make your decision about moving 01:49
to Canada. 01:52
All right. So, one thing many people in the 01:53
world believe is that all Canadians are rich, 01:56
and if you come to Canada, it is easy to become 02:01
rich; you just need to work hard. Unfortunately, 02:05
this is not exactly true. So, let's talk a bit about this. The Canadian dollar, so the 02:09
Canadian currency, is very strong. So, when Canadians go to other countries, we often 02:20
can buy quite a lot of things because we have 02:26
a strong currency. But here's the problem. 02:29
When you live in Canada, everything is very expensive. So, I'll give you some examples 02:33
of this. Let's start here. So, in Canada, in 02:40
2022, the average salary was about $41,000 02:46
US. So, that's what the average Canadian made. 02:52
There's some Canadians that make more money 02:55
than this, and there's a lot of Canadians who 02:58
make less money than this. Now, the problem 03:01
is you might think, "Well, that's a lot of money." But if you think how much money a 03:04
house is in Canada, it's over $800,000 US. 03:10
You might think, "Well, what about if I rent?" 03:15
Rent is also extremely expensive in this 03:20
country. Food is very expensive. Pretty much 03:24
everything is very expensive. So, you make a lot of money, but then you lose most of 03:29
your money every month because of the cost of daily living. So, yes, Canadians make a 03:36
lot of money in general, but we also spend a 03:44
lot of money on rent, food, transportation. 03:47
It's an expensive country to live in. We also 03:52
have very high taxes. So, a lot of the money 03:55
you get goes back to the government. So, again, 03:58
life in Canada is very expensive, so it might 04:03
seem like Canadians are rich. When many immigrants 04:07
come here, they start to work, and they think, 04:10
"Great. I'm making so much money." But then they have to spend all the money they make 04:13
on the cost of daily living and on rent. So, it's a very expensive country. 04:20
A lot of people don't realize also that Canada 04:27
has a problem with homelessness. There's many 04:30
people who are poor in Canada and actually 04:34
live on the streets. You might not know this 04:37
because when you think of Canada, you probably 04:41
picture a beautiful country with a lot of 04:44
nature. That exists, but in the cities, many 04:47
cities have problems with homelessness. It 04:51
might even be worse than where you're from, or there might be less homeless people, but 04:55
I can tell you, Canada has a lot of homeless people. 05:00
So, let's learn a little bit more about this 05:04
country and whether you should move here or 05:07
not. Okay, so a lot of people want to know, "Is it easy to find a job in Canada?" Well, 05:09
here is what the problem is. In Canada, we 05:17
actually need many immigrants. We have a lot 05:22
of jobs and not enough people to work the 05:27
jobs. We really need doctors, we need nurses, 05:31
we need engineers, we need people in IT, we need construction workers, we need people. 05:35
It's a big problem here. There are a lot of 05:43
jobs, but here is the bigger problem. Canada 05:47
has a problem with red tape. "Red tape" might 05:51
be a new word for you. What red tape means 05:56
is bureaucracy. There's many people who come to 06:01
Canada who were doctors, they were engineers, 06:05
they have great skills. We could really use 06:10
them, but the problem is because of regulations, 06:13
paperwork, visa requirements, college rules, 06:18
maybe translation of education, a lot of people 06:24
come to Canada with great skills, but they 06:29
cannot work in these professions, even though 06:33
they want to, and the reason is because of red 06:37
tape. For example, imagine you are a doctor in 06:41
your country. You come to Canada and you want to 06:45
be a doctor in Canada. You know we need doctors 06:49
here. The problem is to become a doctor, you will 06:53
have to go through many different tests. It could 06:57
take years. It takes a lot of money. Your previous 07:01
experience might not count, and so even though you 07:06
have this great experience, you might not succeed 07:10
in becoming a doctor in Canada. This, to me, 07:15
is heartbreaking. It's very frustrating because we 07:19
need people. There's people who have the skills, 07:24
but for some reason, we're not getting these 07:30
people in the professions we need them in. 07:33
So, if you want to learn a little bit more about 07:39
immigration, my colleague Alex actually has a 07:44
good video where he talks to somebody who helps 07:48
immigrants come to Canada. So, you can check out 07:51
that video and learn more if you're interested. 07:54
The bottom line is for many people, they come to 07:57
Canada, they can't find the job they want, and 08:01
they actually leave Canada, or they work in an 08:05
industry completely different because they can't 08:08
do what they were trained to do. Okay, so let me 08:12
tell you a little bit about some of the good 08:15
things about Canada because there are a lot of 08:17
good things about living in Canada. First of all, 08:20
Canada is a pretty safe country. There are crimes, 08:25
yes, but there are less crimes than maybe in other 08:31
countries or other places. I like the fact that as 08:35
a woman, I can walk around in the evening time 08:40
alone and still feel pretty safe. You have to be 08:43
careful, but it's overall safer than a lot of places 08:47
in the world. Canada is also very multicultural, 08:52
especially some of the cities like Vancouver, 08:58
Toronto, and Montreal. We have many immigrants 09:01
who come to Canada, so we are used to immigrants. 09:05
There are different restaurants with different 09:09
types of foods from around the world. You can hear 09:13
different languages being spoken in these cities. 09:16
Overall, Canadians love immigrants, and so we are 09:22
used to immigrants, we love immigrants coming here, 09:26
we love learning about different cultures and 09:30
different beliefs, so we're very welcoming 09:34
towards people from other countries. Another 09:37
positive about living in Canada is freedom. 09:41
You have the freedom to say what you want to say 09:45
or to express your beliefs. We accept people from 09:49
different political beliefs, different religious 09:53
beliefs, different sexual orientations, different 09:58
races. So, overall, if there's... The beautiful 10:03
thing about Canada is there's a lot of freedom, 10:07
especially compared to other places, so some 10:13
people like to come here for that reason. 10:15
Another good thing about Canada is nature. 10:19
There's a lot of nature here. Even in the cities, 10:22
like Toronto, where I'm from, there's a lot of 10:26
green space, lots of parks, you can see wildlife, 10:30
so it's a great country for people who love nature. In fact, many Canadians during the 10:35
summertime go to the forest to cabins or cottages, 10:42
they go camping, they go on fishing trips, so these 10:46
are popular pastimes. So, if you like nature, 10:50
this is a great country to visit or move to. 10:54
We have great libraries in Canada, especially in 10:59
the cities. I mention this because when immigrants 11:02
come here, you can get a lot of information, a 11:06
lot of resources, sometimes even free English 11:10
lessons through the libraries, so they're always 11:14
a great thing to check out if you come here. 11:16
Another thing that is good about living in Canada 11:21
is we have a lot of support for people who have 11:25
disabilities. It's not perfect, but it might 11:30
be better than the supports in other countries. 11:34
So, I'll give you an example. I had one student 11:39
who was in a wheelchair, and I remember when he 11:42
came to Canada, his world opened up because he 11:46
was able to take the bus to different places. 11:50
They have special buses for people in wheelchairs, 11:55
so he could go to different parks, things were 11:58
accessible. So, he really enjoyed coming to Canada 12:02
because where he was from, there wasn't a lot, 12:06
but coming to Canada for people with disabilities, 12:10
there can be a lot more supports or more 12:13
accessibility. Another thing I just wanted to 12:16
mention was healthcare. So, Canada has a healthcare 12:20
system where, in general, because we pay high 12:26
taxes, in general, we don't have to pay for a lot of 12:30
our healthcare. If I want to go to a doctor, I 12:35
don't have to pay. If I need a surgery, in general, 12:39
I don't need to pay. If I have to go to the 12:44
hospital, I don't need to pay. So, this is very... 12:47
this is amazing in a lot of ways, especially if 12:52
you don't have insurance or you don't have a lot 12:55
of money. Having free healthcare is great. The 12:59
problem, this is why I put a question mark, 13:03
is there's a downside to this, and that is that 13:07
sometimes there are long wait times to see a 13:12
doctor or to get a surgery. So, on the one hand, 13:16
it's really good, things are free in general, but 13:20
on the other hand, you might have to wait or you 13:23
might have difficulty finding a family doctor. 13:26
So, there's good and bad when it comes to the 13:28
healthcare system. So, I'm just going to tell you 13:31
a little bit more about immigrating to Canada 13:35
and what that might be like, and hopefully this 13:38
will help you make a decision. Okay, so let's talk 13:41
about some of the negative aspects of living in 13:44
Canada or immigrating here. For many immigrants, 13:48
the weather can be a big surprise. Canada can be 13:53
very cold in the wintertime. The main thing I 13:58
notice, though, is the weather really changes. 14:02
So, it can be suddenly very cold, and then a week later, very hot. Then it's raining, 14:05
and then it's snowing, and then it's perfect 14:15
weather, and everybody's happy. So, you may 14:19
come from a country where things are usually 14:22
the same. In Canada, the weather really changes. 14:25
I think, on the one hand, though, because of 14:29
global warming, many places are getting very, 14:34
very hot. Many places are becoming too hot. I 14:38
think Canada might actually be a good country 14:42
to be in in the future if some of these things continue to happen. 14:45
Transportation. One of the issues with living in Canada is it's a big country, 14:53
so there's a lot of difficulties when it comes 14:58
to transportation. If you want to travel between 15:02
cities, it can be very big distances, so you might 15:05
have to drive a lot. Even if you live in the city, 15:09
like, for example, I live in Toronto, to get to 15:14
work, it can be very difficult because we only 15:18
have a certain number of highways, everybody 15:22
takes the same highways, so there's a lot of 15:25
traffic jams and a lot of very long commutes. 15:29
So, many people find it difficult to get around, 15:33
especially on workdays, just because there's a lot of traffic. 15:38
Rent can be a big problem in Canada, especially 15:44
in the cities like Vancouver and Toronto. 15:48
Rent is expensive here. I think... And these 15:53
numbers frequently change and increase, 15:57
but when I last checked, the average cost of a 16:01
one-bedroom apartment, so an apartment with just 16:05
one bedroom in Toronto, was $2,100 per month. 16:09
Now, even trying to find an apartment can be very 16:14
difficult. A lot of people try to find an apartment, there's not enough apartments, 16:20
so there's a shortage of housing and apartments. 16:28
So, this can be very stressful, and it can be 16:31
really hard on immigrants because they come here and they can't find a place to live. 16:34
So, before you come to Canada, really, really think about where you will live, 16:41
and do you have enough money for rent for the first year you're living here. 16:47
Finally, another thing I wanted to mention 16:54
about maybe some of the negatives about Canada 16:57
is we have a problem with career colleges. So, in Canada, we have universities, 16:59
like the University of Toronto, or the University 17:09
of British Columbia, or McGill University. These 17:13
are great universities, and, you know, they 17:17
have great professors, they have a lot of great 17:19
programs. We also have what we call "career colleges". So, these are not universities, 17:22
they are these almost fake colleges that are 17:31
created. They try to get a lot of international 17:35
students, they do not have good professors, they 17:40
don't have good programs. The diploma in Canada 17:43
is not seen as useful or, you know, it's seen as a scam. There's a lot of fraud 17:46
with these colleges. So, the government is trying to close down these colleges, 17:54
but they keep coming up. So, if you are coming 17:59
to Canada for education, please be careful. 18:03
Look at the reviews for the university, make sure it's a real university. 18:08
So, be careful because some of these career colleges charge a lot of money, 18:16
and they're not good programs. So, these are 18:21
some of the issues with moving to Canada. 18:25
I've talked about some of the positives of living in Canada. 18:30
So, should you move here? Is Canada a good 18:35
place to live? I would say, again, it depends. 18:38
Many people believe they will come here, they'll 18:44
be very rich, they'll have a great house, 18:47
life will be easy, and everything will be perfect. I don't think that's true. 18:50
I think that it's difficult to be an immigrant 18:57
in Canada. I know a lot of people come to Canada 19:01
and then leave Canada because they find the life here too difficult. 19:05
On the other hand, I think that there's a lot of good reasons to come to Canada. 19:11
I think that if you are looking for a safe 19:16
country with freedom, I think that if you are 19:19
looking for a country where it might be a good 19:23
place to have children and raise your children 19:26
in a good environment, I think there's a lot of positives about living in Canada. 19:29
So, I think you need to ask yourself, "Why am I immigrating?" and then decide 19:35
if the reasons for immigration match with the Canadian life. 19:43
So, thank you so much for watching this video. 19:49
We talked about a lot of different things. 19:51
For those of you who have immigrated to Canada, 19:54
please write in the comments below about your 19:58
experiences. I think it's a very good topic, 20:01
and I think people could really benefit from 20:04
understanding if you had a good experience 20:06
moving to Canada, or if you had a bad experience 20:09
moving to Canada, and what your advice would be. 20:12
So, thank you again for watching, and until next time, take care. 20:16

Hello. My name is Emma, and today we are going
to talk about whether you should move to Canada.
Many people want to come to Canada. As some of
you know, I'm from Canada, I live in Toronto,
and so I thought it would be a great idea
to make a video about what it is like moving
to Canada and living in Canada. Many students
ask me, "Is Canada a good country to move
to? Is it a good country to immigrate to?" My answer is always, "Well, it depends on
what your goals are." So, I'm going to talk
a little bit about that later. Before I talk
about this video, I also wanted to tell you a
bit about my background. So, I teach English,
I have many students from many countries around
the world, I teach immigrants English, I am
the granddaughter of an immigrant, so my grandfather
immigrated to Canada, and I have a lot of
friends who are immigrants. In fact, more than half of Toronto... More than half of
the people from Toronto were actually born in other countries. So, we are a place and
a city of immigrants. So, in this video, I'm going to talk a little bit about life
in Canada. We'll talk about the first question
a lot of people wonder, "Are Canadians rich?
Are there jobs in Canada? What about housing?
Is it easy to buy a house or find an apartment?
What are the good things about living in Canada,
and what are the bad things?" I hope by the
end of this video, you will have more information
to help you make your decision about moving
to Canada.
All right. So, one thing many people in the
world believe is that all Canadians are rich,
and if you come to Canada, it is easy to become
rich; you just need to work hard. Unfortunately,
this is not exactly true. So, let's talk a bit about this. The Canadian dollar, so the
Canadian currency, is very strong. So, when Canadians go to other countries, we often
can buy quite a lot of things because we have
a strong currency. But here's the problem.
When you live in Canada, everything is very expensive. So, I'll give you some examples
of this. Let's start here. So, in Canada, in
2022, the average salary was about $41,000
US. So, that's what the average Canadian made.
There's some Canadians that make more money
than this, and there's a lot of Canadians who
make less money than this. Now, the problem
is you might think, "Well, that's a lot of money." But if you think how much money a
house is in Canada, it's over $800,000 US.
You might think, "Well, what about if I rent?"
Rent is also extremely expensive in this
country. Food is very expensive. Pretty much
everything is very expensive. So, you make a lot of money, but then you lose most of
your money every month because of the cost of daily living. So, yes, Canadians make a
lot of money in general, but we also spend a
lot of money on rent, food, transportation.
It's an expensive country to live in. We also
have very high taxes. So, a lot of the money
you get goes back to the government. So, again,
life in Canada is very expensive, so it might
seem like Canadians are rich. When many immigrants
come here, they start to work, and they think,
"Great. I'm making so much money." But then they have to spend all the money they make
on the cost of daily living and on rent. So, it's a very expensive country.
A lot of people don't realize also that Canada
has a problem with homelessness. There's many
people who are poor in Canada and actually
live on the streets. You might not know this
because when you think of Canada, you probably
picture a beautiful country with a lot of

I can tell you, Canada has a lot of homeless people.
So, let's learn a little bit more about this

So, if you want to learn a little bit more about

that video and learn more if you're interested.
The bottom line is for many people, they come to

they actually leave Canada, or they work in an
industry completely different because they can't

positive about living in Canada is freedom.

beliefs, different sexual orientations, different
races. So, overall, if there's... The beautiful
thing about Canada is there's a lot of freedom,
especially compared to other places, so some
people like to come here for that reason.
Another good thing about Canada is nature.
There's a lot of nature here. Even in the cities,

We have great libraries in Canada, especially in

a great thing to check out if you come here.
Another thing that is good about living in Canada
is we have a lot of support for people who have
disabilities. It's not perfect, but it might
be better than the supports in other countries.
So, I'll give you an example. I had one student
who was in a wheelchair, and I remember when he

because where he was from, there wasn't a lot,
but coming to Canada for people with disabilities,
there can be a lot more supports or more
accessibility. Another thing I just wanted to
mention was healthcare. So, Canada has a healthcare
system where, in general, because we pay high
taxes, in general, we don't have to pay for a lot of
our healthcare. If I want to go to a doctor, I
don't have to pay. If I need a surgery, in general,
I don't need to pay. If I have to go to the
hospital, I don't need to pay. So, this is very...
this is amazing in a lot of ways, especially if
you don't have insurance or you don't have a lot
of money. Having free healthcare is great. The
problem, this is why I put a question mark,
is there's a downside to this, and that is that
sometimes there are long wait times to see a
doctor or to get a surgery. So, on the one hand,
it's really good, things are free in general, but
on the other hand, you might have to wait or you
might have difficulty finding a family doctor.
So, there's good and bad when it comes to the
healthcare system. So, I'm just going to tell you
a little bit more about immigrating to Canada
and what that might be like, and hopefully this
will help you make a decision. Okay, so let's talk
about some of the negative aspects of living in
Canada or immigrating here. For many immigrants,
the weather can be a big surprise. Canada can be
very cold in the wintertime. The main thing I
notice, though, is the weather really changes.
So, it can be suddenly very cold, and then a week later, very hot. Then it's raining,
and then it's snowing, and then it's perfect
weather, and everybody's happy. So, you may
come from a country where things are usually
the same. In Canada, the weather really changes.
I think, on the one hand, though, because of
global warming, many places are getting very,
very hot. Many places are becoming too hot. I
think Canada might actually be a good country
to be in in the future if some of these things continue to happen.
Transportation. One of the issues with living in Canada is it's a big country,
so there's a lot of difficulties when it comes
to transportation. If you want to travel between
cities, it can be very big distances, so you might
have to drive a lot. Even if you live in the city,
like, for example, I live in Toronto, to get to
work, it can be very difficult because we only
have a certain number of highways, everybody
takes the same highways, so there's a lot of
traffic jams and a lot of very long commutes.
So, many people find it difficult to get around,
especially on workdays, just because there's a lot of traffic.
Rent can be a big problem in Canada, especially
in the cities like Vancouver and Toronto.
Rent is expensive here. I think... And these
numbers frequently change and increase,
but when I last checked, the average cost of a
one-bedroom apartment, so an apartment with just
one bedroom in Toronto, was $2,100 per month.
Now, even trying to find an apartment can be very
difficult. A lot of people try to find an apartment, there's not enough apartments,
so there's a shortage of housing and apartments.
So, this can be very stressful, and it can be
really hard on immigrants because they come here and they can't find a place to live.
So, before you come to Canada, really, really think about where you will live,
and do you have enough money for rent for the first year you're living here.
Finally, another thing I wanted to mention
about maybe some of the negatives about Canada
is we have a problem with career colleges. So, in Canada, we have universities,
like the University of Toronto, or the University
of British Columbia, or McGill University. These
are great universities, and, you know, they
have great professors, they have a lot of great
programs. We also have what we call "career colleges". So, these are not universities,
they are these almost fake colleges that are
created. They try to get a lot of international
students, they do not have good professors, they
don't have good programs. The diploma in Canada
is not seen as useful or, you know, it's seen as a scam. There's a lot of fraud
with these colleges. So, the government is trying to close down these colleges,
but they keep coming up. So, if you are coming
to Canada for education, please be careful.
Look at the reviews for the university, make sure it's a real university.
So, be careful because some of these career colleges charge a lot of money,
and they're not good programs. So, these are
some of the issues with moving to Canada.
I've talked about some of the positives of living in Canada.
So, should you move here? Is Canada a good
place to live? I would say, again, it depends.
Many people believe they will come here, they'll
be very rich, they'll have a great house,
life will be easy, and everything will be perfect. I don't think that's true.
I think that it's difficult to be an immigrant
in Canada. I know a lot of people come to Canada
and then leave Canada because they find the life here too difficult.
On the other hand, I think that there's a lot of good reasons to come to Canada.
I think that if you are looking for a safe
country with freedom, I think that if you are
looking for a country where it might be a good
place to have children and raise your children
in a good environment, I think there's a lot of positives about living in Canada.
So, I think you need to ask yourself, "Why am I immigrating?" and then decide
if the reasons for immigration match with the Canadian life.
So, thank you so much for watching this video.
We talked about a lot of different things.
For those of you who have immigrated to Canada,
please write in the comments below about your
experiences. I think it's a very good topic,
and I think people could really benefit from
understanding if you had a good experience
moving to Canada, or if you had a bad experience
moving to Canada, and what your advice would be.
So, thank you again for watching, and until next time, take care.
