mobilizing young voters in the 2024 00:30
election. This evening, the president 00:33
broke the news of Kirk's death, calling 00:35
him a truly great American patriot, and 00:38
flags were lowered to half staff at the 00:40
White House in honor of Charlie Kirk. 00:42
>> CBS News justice correspondent Scott 00:44

had been released. 01:05
Just minutes into Charlie Kirk's event 01:08

began taking questions from the 01:15

Like it it's traumatizing like you know 02:13
it it scares like I don't even want to 02:16
go to school tomorrow. A student I spoke 02:18
to said they were there to exchange 02:20
ideas and get a better understanding of 02:21
the dialogue in today's country. But all 02:23
of that shattered as soon as Charlie 02:25
Kirk was shot. 02:28
>> I heard a loud bang which I figured a 02:30
shot would be a little bit louder, but 02:32
uh I just saw it hit him and then he 02:34
like fell over and slumped down and 02:36
everybody got down and was screaming and 02:37
then we all ran. 02:39
Sources tell CBS News the shot that 02:41
struck Kirk appears to have been fired 02:43
from an elevated position in an academic 02:45
building 1 to 200 yards away. Federal 02:47
agents blanketed the scene along with 02:50
local and university police canvasing 02:52
the area. Kirk spoke last week on his 02:54
podcast with Senator Lee about the tense 02:56
atmosphere at the university ahead of 02:58
his appearance. 03:00
>> Senator Lee, this is already making a 03:01
lot of headlines. People are very angry. 03:02
They're calling for my cancellation. 03:04
They think our permit should be pulled. 03:06

rallying young voters to the Republican 03:21
party. 03:23

point this afternoon, Utah Valley 03:49

He spoke frequently with Charlie Kirk 04:07

correspondent, Ed O'Keefe, can tell us 04:10
more about Charlie Kirk's friendship 04:12
with President Trump. 04:13
>> Bob, let's start with you. What can you 04:14
tell us about Charlie Kirk? 04:16
>> Charlie Kirk was someone who was a 04:19
father, he was a son, he was a husband, 04:22
and he was also a political force. So 04:25
many Republicans today are stunned to 04:28
see a rising star gunned down. On paper, 04:31
an activist, someone who was influential 04:35
with many young Americans, especially 04:38
those who are more on the right. Yet, 04:40
this is someone who has built 04:42
relationships in his 20s and early 30s 04:44
with some of the most powerful people in 04:46
this country, most notably President 04:48
Trump. They trusted Kirk as someone who 04:51
really knew how the country was mapped 04:53
out on college campuses, where the votes 04:54
were, where the power centers could be 04:57
for the next generation of the 04:59
Republican party. And so, it's not just 05:01
about a friend being lost, and someone 05:03
who's a confidant to those in the party. 05:05
But this was someone who was seen as the 05:08
leader for the party as it looked to the 05:11
future. 05:14
>> And Ed, Donald Trump gave Kirk a lot of 05:15
praise for helping him win reelection. 05:17
Just how important was he? 05:19
>> Oh, incredibly important to the Trump 05:22
re-election. Among other things, he was 05:24
among those pushing now President Trump 05:26
to pick JD Vance as his running mate, 05:29
arguing that he would help reflect the 05:31
next generation of the MAGA movement uh 05:33
should he uh run for president himself 05:36
one day. Very close with Donald Trump 05:39
Jr. went with him to Greenland earlier 05:40
this year when that was an issue for the 05:42
White House. and is someone who in the 05:45
during the presidential transition was 05:48
meeting on a regular basis with 05:50
President-elect Trump to pick cabinet 05:52
secretaries and other senior government 05:54
officials. In essence, saying to him, 05:56
"Pick this person for that job. Send 05:57
this other person to this other agency 05:59
and then making sure that Republican 06:01
senators would provide the votes 06:03
necessary to get them confirmed and put 06:05
pressure on a handful of Republican 06:07
lawmakers who raised concerns about some 06:09
of those picks. The thing to keep in 06:11
mind though, if you're someone who 06:14
doesn't know who this guy is, who who 06:15
Charlie Kirk was, and given the age we 06:16
live in where your algorithm may be 06:19
different than your neighbors or one of 06:21
your relatives, this was somebody who 06:22
that eyewitness said tried to help get a 06:24
better understanding of the dialogue to 06:27
like-minded conservatives across the 06:29
country. And in doing so was convincing 06:30
younger conservative voters across the 06:33
country to support President Trump last 06:35
year made him so essential to his 06:37
re-election campaign. Bob, you've 06:39
covered the conservative movement for a 06:41
long time. Kirk rose as the movement was 06:43
changing. Was he a product of that 06:46
change or was he a driver of that 06:48
change? 06:50
>> John, he he was certainly a driver of 06:52
that change. This is someone who you see 06:54
in Charlie Kirk, someone who saw Mitt 06:57
Romney's defeat in 2012. And he was able 06:59
to say, "Yes, maybe the traditional 07:01
Republican party was moving in that 07:03
direction, but he was open to new 07:05
arguments, open to nationalism, to 07:06
populism, to the rise of then 07:09
businessman Donald Trump in 2016. And he 07:11
saw an opportunity for the Republican 07:14
party to go in a new direction. And 07:17
that's why he was able to build a bond 07:19
with Tucker Carlson, with Donald Trump 07:21
Jr., and with President Trump. But it's 07:24
notable that Charlie Kirk was not just 07:26
one of so many conservative activists. 07:28
John, at the end of the day, this is 07:30
someone I observed up close at event 07:32
after event. He had joy. You may 07:34
disagree with Charlie Kirk's political 07:36
views. You may march in the streets 07:38
against them. You may be a major 07:40
supporter of his and count him as an 07:42
ally. At the end of the day, whether 07:44
it's California Governor Gavin Newsome 07:47
or others, they saw him as someone who 07:49
is a real competent conservative and 07:50
worthy of the arena he was in. 07:53
>> Robert Costa and Ed O'Keefe in 07:55
Washington for us. Thank you both. 07:57
>> We mentioned Charlie Kirk's work with 07:59
his conservative youth organization, 08:00
Turning Point USA. 08:02
>> Chris Van Cleave is outside Turning 08:04
Point headquarters in Phoenix. 08:06
>> Yep, guys. We've seen an elevated 08:11
security presence here. Phoenix police 08:13
on scene. Although Phoenix police also 08:16
say there are no indications of any 08:17
specific threats here locally against 08:20
the organization. A number of officers 08:21
have arrived in the last couple of 08:23
hours. That white van is blocking the 08:25
driveway. Still, we were here as we 08:27
watched as employees brought the 08:29
American flag and the Arizona state flag 08:32
to half staff. Most employees were sent 08:34
home this afternoon and we have watched 08:36
as a steady stream of people have come 08:38
to pay their respects dropping off 08:40
flowers. We've seen a lot of emotion. 08:42
People in tears embracing each other and 08:44
praying. Noticeably a number of young 08:47
people are among the folks coming to pay 08:50
their respects. Kirk did a lot of events 08:52
on college campuses as you've heard Bob 08:54
Costa say. One young man we talked to 08:57
said he felt that Kirk created a forum 08:58
that was welcoming for him and gave him 09:01
a voice. A voice that has now been so 09:04
violently silenced. 09:06
>> Chris Van Cleave for us. Thank you, 09:08
