Prince William has arrived in Brazil for 00:00
his first official visit where he'll 00:02
host his annual environmental 00:03
competition, the Earthshot Prize. Whilst 00:05
he's there, he'll also deliver a speech 00:08
at the COP climate conference. Well, 00:09
let's go live to Rio and our South 00:11
America correspondent Ioni Wells, who is 00:13
there. And I this is a hugely important 00:15
trip for Prince William. But of course, 00:19
the worries will be that it's all going 00:21
to be overshadowed by everything we've 00:23
seen with Prince Andrew. 00:25
That's right. Certainly, the news about 00:29
his uncle Andrew has been dominating the 00:31
headlines over the last week or so, and 00:34
that has been, I think, certainly among 00:36
officials in the palace, a concern that 00:38
that would overshadow some of the events 00:40
that he is doing here in Rio. I I think 00:42
from Prince William's perspective, this 00:45
trip is about trying to sort of shift 00:47
the narrative back towards uh some of 00:48
the themes that it's thought he might 00:51
try to define his future reign one day 00:53
by largely climate issues, but also 00:56
issues around young people in 00:58
particular. Today, he he kicked off his 01:00
visit here in Rio by visiting the 01:02
Sugarloaf Mountain, which you might be 01:04
able to see behind me, one of the most 01:05
iconic sites of the city of Rio de 01:07
Janeiro. He was there with the city's 01:09
mayor. Uh I think a lot of tourists were 01:11
somewhat taken by surprise to see the 01:13
prince suddenly turn up at the top of 01:15
the cable car uh where he proceeded to 01:16
go and take selfies with various 01:18
different people up there. The main 01:20
reason why he's here though is that uh 01:22
he is hosting this annual Earth Shot 01:25
Prize here on Wednesday where various 01:27
different climate solutions from around 01:30
the world are nominated for what is a 01:31
significant amount of prize money uh to 01:34
to essentially back their uh initiatives 01:36
before he goes on to the COP 30 climate 01:39
summit which is going to be hosted in 01:42
the Amazon city of BM starting later 01:43
this week. Now he's there in place of 01:46
his father King Charles. Uh it's thought 01:48
though that the two of them wrote his 01:50
speech together. Uh and that this is as 01:52
I say something that he will want to 01:55
sort of turn a lot of his attention to. 01:56
I think it's thought that like his 01:59
father climate issues are certainly 02:01
something he would want to be part of 02:03
his future reign. 02:04
>> And I only just take us through a little 02:06
more about what is on the diary just in 02:08
the next 24 hours or so. 02:10
Well, most of the events that he's uh 02:15
doing here in Rio are largely to do with 02:17
either climate issues or young people. 02:20
Now, we aren't really able to get very 02:22
close to him, as is often the case with 02:24
these royal visits. Uh but we do know 02:26
that as I say he started off this 02:28
morning up at the Sugarloaf Mountain 02:30
meeting the mayor talking to him uh both 02:31
about the connection between Brazil uh 02:34
and also the UK but also it it's been 02:36
reported that Prince William was asking 02:39
quite a lot of questions about uh issues 02:41
affecting the city uh about fllas in the 02:43
city too. Uh this comes just days after 02:46
the deadliest ever police raid at one of 02:50
the fllas here in Rio. Something that 02:52
has shocked the city to its core. Uh 02:55
there were more than 100 people killed 02:57
in that police raid which police said 03:00
were were target was targeting uh one of 03:01
the criminal gangs the commando in Rio 03:04
and certainly I think from the mayor's 03:08
perspective here this is an issue that 03:09
is still very much front and center of 03:11
residents minds. Uh it is something as I 03:13
say that Prince William seems to have 03:15
asked about asking about fllas asking 03:16
about some of the different communities 03:19
in this city trying to learn more about 03:20
it. It's thought that some of the events 03:23
that he will be carrying out over the 03:24
next couple of days will include meeting 03:27
various community leaders, meeting young 03:29
people, meeting sports figures as well 03:31
here in Brazil before Wednesday, which 03:33
is really the key event here in the city 03:35
when he hosts the Earthshot prize. Now 03:37
uh I believe that five different winners 03:39
will be nominated each receiving a 03:42
million pounds towards their initiatives 03:44
and the different initiatives uh 03:45
widespread around the world. One of the 03:48
nominees for example is uh a company in 03:50
the UK that's created a kind of filter 03:53
for water to try and eliminate uh 03:55
microplastics from the water system. 03:58
Others is a government initiative for 04:00
example here in Brazil trying to provide 04:02
funding for countries that will tackle 04:05
deforestation. So he will likely be 04:07
meeting with a lot of the different 04:09
nominees and eventually awarding the 04:10
prize 04:12

Key Grammar Structures

  • Prince William has arrived in Brazil for his first official visit where he'll host his annual environmental competition, the Earthshot Prize.

    ➔ Relative Clause with 'where'

➔ 'Where' introduces a relative clause that provides more information about a place (Brazil). It indicates the location where the action (hosting the competition) takes place.

  • Whilst he's there, he'll also deliver a speech at the COP climate conference.

➔ Conjunction 'Whilst' indicating simultaneous actions

➔ 'Whilst' means 'while' or 'during the time that'. Here, it indicates that delivering the speech at the conference happens during his time in Brazil.

  • But of course, the worries will be that it's all going to be overshadowed by everything we've seen with Prince Andrew.

➔ Passive Voice with 'be overshadowed'

➔ The passive voice 'be overshadowed' emphasizes that the Earthshot Prize event might be less noticed because of the Prince Andrew situation, rather than specifying who is doing the overshadowing. 'Going to be' expresses future probability.

  • That's right. Certainly, the news about his uncle Andrew has been dominating the headlines over the last week or so, and that has been, I think, certainly among officials in the palace, a concern that that would overshadow some of the events that he is doing here in Rio.

    ➔ Subjunctive mood ('would overshadow')

➔ 'Would overshadow' expresses a hypothetical or possible future outcome. It conveys that there was a concern that the Prince Andrew news *might* overshadow the Earthshot events.

  • I think from Prince William's perspective, this trip is about trying to sort of shift the narrative back towards uh some of the themes that it's thought he might try to define his future reign one day by largely climate issues, but also issues around young people in particular.

    ➔ Cleft sentence structure

➔ Using 'it's thought' to emphasize the belief that Prince William wants to define his reign through certain themes. Cleft sentences focus attention on a particular part of the sentence.

  • The main reason why he's here though is that uh he is hosting this annual Earth Shot Prize here on Wednesday where various different climate solutions from around the world are nominated for what is a significant amount of prize money uh to to essentially back their uh initiatives

➔ Embedded question within a statement ('why he's here')

➔ The phrase 'why he's here' functions as a noun clause, acting as the subject complement after 'reason'. It answers the question implicitly without using direct question word order.

  • Now he's there in place of his father King Charles.

➔ Prepositional phrase 'in place of'

➔ 'In place of' means 'instead of' or 'acting as a substitute for'. It indicates that Prince William is attending the event because King Charles cannot.

  • It's thought though that the two of them wrote his speech together. Uh and that this is as I say something that he will want to sort of turn a lot of his attention to.

➔ Future intention with 'will want to'

➔ 'Will want to' expresses a strong desire or intention to do something in the future. In this case, it indicates Prince William's strong intention to focus his attention on the topic of the speech.
