My name is Tengku Ruqayyah Bt Tengku Shahrom

and today I would like to talk about Generation Gap In Family

What is Generation Gap?

Generation gap is the differences between people in terms of their views , opinions and life style

mainly due to the difference in the generation they belong to

In the case of a family, this happens between children and parents

According to several schools of psychology,

there are several stages in development of individuals, especially children

Each stage has its own set of challenges and preoccupations

As parents and children are in different development stages,

they have different preoccupations and different objectives

Thus, the generation gap is universal. It is just the difference in world views

So this is the main root cause of relationship issues between teenagers and their parents

How does this impact their relationship?

You know without a good communication, then it will eventually lead to break up of relationships

and also lack of communication and also eventually lead to miscommunication

between the parents and the children

So the impact is it could actually alienate

and further make the relationship between different generation become widen

and therefore a lot of misunderstanding, relationship become weaker

and into the point that they might just break the relationship

Children tend to stay away from parents,

they rather solved their problem with their friends rather than talk their problems with their parents

because parents don’t understand them, and they don’t want their parents to understand

and the parents don’t want to understand them

So how can we reduce the generation gap?

Whatever problem we have to solve, try to solve it together

So parents have to treat children like friends

and children should not avoid parents

because parents are more experienced,

parents wants the best for their children

So children should go to the parents if there are problems

By learning or putting in a bit of effort

to understand what the younger generation

is experiencing at the particular situation

We must not make simple comparisons life

because most things in life are not just pure black and white

Thus we cannot make generalizations based on simple comparisons only

In a nutshell, everything which young ones encounter

is result of things which older ones did

And, actions of these young ones

will define things for the next generation of the young

Last but not least, just have a healthy discussions about your opinions on life

and agree to disagree if required.
