Activists on board a flotilla of boats 00:00
flying trying to deliver aid to Gaza say 00:02
they've been intercepted by Israeli 00:05
warships as they were approaching the 00:06
territory. They provided this footage 00:09
from on board one of the vessels saying 00:11
passengers were sprayed with water 00:13
cannon. Israel's foreign ministry 00:15
confirmed several vessels have been 00:17
stopped and posted this video of the 00:19
Swedish climate activist Greta Tunberg. 00:21
It said that she and other passengers 00:24
are safe and being taken to an Israeli 00:26
port. Let us speak to our Middle East 00:30
correspondent Yoland Nell about this 00:32
latest development. It set off some 00:36
weeks ago, didn't it, Yoland? This 00:38
flotilla, where was it intercepted? 00:40
So the first boats in the flutella 00:45
because there are about 45 of them 00:47
involved were intercepted about 70 00:49
nautical miles um off the coast of Gaza. 00:52
That's in international waters and 00:54
they're challenging the legality of 00:57
that. Um more of the boats then have 00:59
been able to continue um on their way. 01:02
The last update on the telegram account 01:04
floor the flatillaa was saying that some 01:06
were within about 46 nautical miles of 01:09
the Gazen coast. This is where um for 01:12
several hours now, Israeli naval 01:14
commandos, we've seen them one by one 01:17
boarding these different vessels on some 01:19
of the live feeds. Um in one of the most 01:21
recent um videos that was put out by the 01:24
flutilla team, you can see that they 01:27
have their arms up, their hands up 01:30
rather, and the soldiers um pull 01:32
alongside the vessel um with their guns 01:35
raised and take control of it. We just 01:37
had a statement from the Israeli 01:39
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is 01:41
handling all the communications on this, 01:43
the Israeli military has told me. Um, 01:45
and it says that passengers in the 01:47
flatillaa are making their way to safely 01:49
and peacefully to Israel, where their 01:51
deportation procedures to Europe will 01:53
begin. Uh, this is all having to be 01:56
handled very carefully. This is a very 01:58
international flatillaa with people from 02:00
all around the world involved and 02:02
already there has been a lot of 02:03
criticism. Um Turkey came out with a 02:05
very strong statement calling um 02:08
Israel's um interception to these boats 02:09
an attack and saying that it was an act 02:12
of terror endangering civilian lives. Uh 02:14
Colombia has ordered the expulsion of 02:17
the Israeli diplomatic team that's there 02:20
in the absence of ambassador at the 02:22
moment because of the um detention of 02:24
some Colombian citizens who are on this 02:27
flatillaa. So you can see that this is 02:29
already having a lot of ramifications. 02:32
they had really become over the past 02:33
month with these boats sailing across 02:35
the Mediterranean very highprofile. You 02:37
had um Spain and Italy sending boats, 02:39
their own government sending boats to 02:44
protect their citizens who are in this 02:45
flatillaa um because of attacks that had 02:47
taken place. Um there had been drones 02:50
frequently seen overhead and at some 02:53
points incendury devices um dropped on 02:55
some of the boats taking part in the 02:58
flatillaa. 03:00
Just very briefly, Yoland, you mentioned 03:02
that there are other vessels still uh 03:04
heading towards Gaza. I mean, what's the 03:06
likelihood of them actually being able 03:08
to reach the territory? 03:09
Well, the Israeli military made clear 03:14
that it was going to uh intercept these 03:15
vessels um because they say that this is 03:18
a a zone that they police off the coast 03:21
of Gaza, that this is an active war 03:24
zone. Um the Israelis have been calling 03:26
the flatillaa a provocation but they 03:29
said that their mission was 03:31
humanitarian. They wanted to open a new 03:33
humanitarian corridor and they were 03:35
carrying food and medicines for the 03:36
people in Gaza who desperately need it. 03:39
Yoland for the moment. Thank you very 03:41
much. Yoland Nelly's correspondent. 03:43
