Protesters in Europe, Australia, and 00:00
South America have taken to the streets 00:03
to condemn Israel's interception of an 00:05
aid flatillaa challenging the blockade 00:07
of Gaza. The Israelis detained more than 00:09
400 foreign activists aboard 40 vessels 00:11
and plan to deport them. The Israeli 00:14
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said 00:16
the Israeli Navy had repelled a campaign 00:19
of delegitimization against Israel. 00:21
Inside Gaza, officials say Israeli 00:24
strikes killed at least 52 people on 00:26
Thursday. Meanwhile, thousands of 00:29
Palestinians continue to flee Gaza City 00:31
amid an ongoing Israeli ground offensive 00:33
to take full control of the area. 00:35
Meanwhile, the White House says 00:38
President Trump will draw a red line on 00:40
how long to wait for Hamas to respond to 00:42
a US proposal aimed at ending the war in 00:45
Gaza. On Tuesday, Mr. Trump said that 00:47
Hamas had 3 to four days to reply to his 00:50
20point framework which has largely been 00:53
accepted by Israel. While our 00:56
correspondent Barbara Platt Usher spoke 00:58
to us from Jerusalem with the latest on 01:00
the detained activists. 01:02
>> The last number I saw of those who'd 01:04
been detained was 443 01:05
foreign activists from many different 01:08
countries. A lot of them from Europe, 01:10
some of them from South America. So you 01:11
had widespread protests once they were 01:13
detained. protests in Spain, in Belgium, 01:16
uh in Switzerland, in Italy. In Italy, 01:19
they're calling a strike today to show 01:21
solidarity, also protests in Bonaris, in 01:23
Brazilia. Uh so very widespread reaction 01:26
to what happened. A number of harsh 01:29
commendations from several governments, 01:31
from Colombia, uh from Turkey. Um but 01:33
the Israelis uh say that they handled 01:36
this responsibly. They uh said it was a 01:39
major operation because there were some 01:41
42 boats. They picked up the activists 01:43
in international waters. Uh, and they 01:46
filmed themselves doing that and posted 01:49
clips later saying that all of the 01:51
activists were safe. They also said that 01:52
they had checked the boats looking for 01:55
this aid that the flutilla was carrying 01:57
up there. They didn't really find much 01:59
which they say uh basically bolstered 02:01
their claim that this was all a stunt or 02:04
a provocation but it was in actual fact 02:07
a very highprofile demonstration of 02:09
opposition to Gaza's to the to the 02:12
blockade of Gaza where famine has been 02:14
declared the intense international 02:16
opposition to it that has been growing. 02:17
Uh there have been a number there were a 02:20
number of famous or high-profile people 02:21
on board the grandson of Nelson Mandela 02:24
several European politicians. So, uh, it 02:26
does show that global solidarity with 02:29
the Palestinians has been growing over 02:31
the past year. 02:33
>> Yeah. Let's talk about Gaza because the 02:34
Israeli military push there continues. 02:36
Um, and the, uh, we are awaiting the 02:39
response from Hamas to the peace plan 02:42
put forward by President Trump. Um, 02:45
what's the latest on that? President 02:48
Trump saying he's drawing a red line. 02:50
He'd given he'd given a sort of loose 02:51
time frame, hadn't he, of sort three or 02:53
four days. 02:54
Yes, he gave that loose time frame early 02:58
in the week. So that would be about now 03:00
really, but he didn't make it a firm 03:02
deadline. Still, everybody is waiting to 03:04
see what Hamas says to the peace plan. 03:06
The mediators, Qatar, Turkey, Egypt are 03:08
pressing very hard for Hamas to accept 03:11
this plan, even though they themselves 03:13
have reservations about it, but they see 03:15
it as a way that could end the war. Now 03:17
BBC sources um say that they have uh 03:20
made contact or that the mediators have 03:24
made contact with the head of the 03:27
military wing uh in Gaza, Isadina Hadad. 03:28
Uh and they are reporting and we 03:32
understand that he is not inclined to 03:34
accept the plan that he basically 03:36
believes that this is a plan to finish 03:37
off Hamas whether the group accepts it 03:40
or not and so it's better to fight until 03:42
the end. There are a number of problems 03:44
that the Hamas has with the plant. In 03:46
particular, it calls on the group to 03:49
disarm. Uh now, the group has said it 03:51
would not disarm until uh a sovereign 03:54
Palestinian state was declared. That's 03:56
been its position until now. Another 03:58
thing that Hamas has problems with is 04:00
the demand that all of the hostages, 04:02
there are 48 hostages, around 20 of whom 04:04
still believed to be alive, be handed 04:06
over at the beginning uh of this 04:08
process. So in the first 72 hours, all 04:11
the hostages would be handed over rather 04:13
than in phases like previous ceasefires. 04:14
And Hamas sort of sees this as giving 04:17
away their only card right at the 04:18
beginning, which would make them 04:21
vulnerable. They don't trust President 04:22
Trump's guarantee that Israel would not 04:24
restart the war as soon as it gets its 04:26
hostages back, especially after Israel 04:27
attacked the Hamas leadership in Qatar. 04:30
So these are some of the misgivings that 04:32
they have. Uh, it should be said that 04:35
the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin 04:36
Netanyahu accepted the plan officially 04:38
in Washington, but in Israel, he has 04:40
also been pushing back on the terms in 04:42
his statements. For example, he says it 04:44
will allow the Israelis to retain parts 04:46
of Gaza, which is not what the plan 04:48
says. It says they would move to a 04:50
security buffer on the edge of the of 04:52
the strip. It also says that there's a 04:54
there's an insistence there will not be 04:56
a Palestinian state, and in fact, the 04:58
plan says uh that there's there might be 04:59
a credible path to a Palestinian state 05:02
if everything works out. So, he has put 05:04
his own take on the terms, but right now 05:06
uh what everyone is waiting for is to 05:09
see how Hamas officially responds to 05:11
what many are hoping could be a way to 05:14
end the Gaza war. That was Barbara Pasha 05:16
reporting there from uh Jerusalem. Um 05:19
let's just take another look at those 05:21
pictures there. Nine vessels as part of 05:24
that uh flatillaa of activists making 05:26
their way towards Gaza. As we've been 05:29
reporting this morning, uh, Israelis 05:32
have detained more than 400 foreign 05:33
activists. And those street protests 05:35
