- Before we dive in, I went to the UK recently, 00:00

and I have no idea what the hell to do with all of it. 00:03
So I'm just gonna let that play 00:06

So I wanted to address a topic 00:09
that so many of you guys message me with. 00:10
I see it in the comments section all the time. 00:13
Comments like, "I feel like every day I live the same day. 00:15
I want more than anything to be motivated, 00:19
but it just feels like no matter what I do, nothing works. 00:22
I feel so stuck." (slow relaxing music) 00:25
So maybe you're in that situation 00:27
maybe you watch self-improvement content like this, 00:28
hoping for an aha moment. 00:31
You know, the special sauce, 00:33
the secret mindset that'll propel you out 00:35
of the current life that you live, 00:37
the mindset that will make everything make sense. 00:39
But here's the thing, instead of waiting for an aha moment, 00:42
you can be doing something a lot simpler. 00:45
There's an easier way to escape the mental patterns 00:47
you've imprisoned yourself into, 00:51
and that is to go outside. 00:53
And I know that probably sounds super condescending, 00:55
go outside. (slow relaxing music) 00:58
How is that gonna solve my financial problems, 00:59
make me eat healthier, or stop being depressed? 01:02
But here's the thing, yes, I mean, literally go outside, 01:05
we'll talk about that in a second, 01:08
but I mean, go outside in every sense of the word, 01:09
because so many of us don't realize 01:13
just how inside we've become. (slow relaxing music) 01:15
We're living inside our house, inside our room, 01:17
inside our heads, inside ourselves. 01:21
It all just feeds into each other, and then we feel trapped, 01:24
and it happens so gradually, and so naturally, 01:28
we just sort of wake up one day, 01:31
and we ask ourselves, how come my life feels so small? 01:32
I remember when I was a kid, there's new sights and sounds, 01:36
and people to meet, things to experience, 01:40
but now it just feels like my life is tiny. 01:42
There's nothing new under the sun, 01:45
and that's because we've become inside. 01:47
How did this happen? (slow relaxing music) 01:50
See, the more time we spend being inside our house, 01:51
inside our car, on our phone, browsing social media. 01:55
watching YouTube videos on your laptop, 02:00
and the less time we spend as part of a community, 02:02
being a person in the world exposing ourself to sunlight 02:05
and external social scrutiny, we become isolated. 02:09
when our mind isn't focused outwards, 02:13
and instead completely inwards. 02:16
It's like we become toxically self-conscious, 02:18
and not self-conscious, (slow relaxing music) 02:21
like, "Oh, do these jeans make me look fat?" 02:23
But more like we become hyper-aware of our own existence 02:25
our thoughts become extremely loud. 02:29
We start to obsess about our own thoughts, 02:31
and our own ruminations, and our brain needs variety. 02:34
You know, a healthy mind goes to different places, 02:38
and sees different things, engages in unique challenges, 02:41
talks with different people. 02:45
So what do we do about it? 02:47
You know, not all of us can just quit our jobs, 02:48
and start eating sushi. 02:51
Most of us are constrained, 02:53
we're all pretty short in the freedom department. 02:55
We can't just do whatever we want. 02:57
Most of us have to go to a job 02:59
whether we feel like it or not, 03:01
we have to make money to support ourselves and our family, 03:03
so we can pay rent. 03:06
So if that's you, are you doomed? 03:07
Obviously not. (slow relaxing music) 03:09
Why would I make this video, 03:10
and just tell you you're doomed. 03:12
You probably know instinctively that there is an answer, 03:13
there is a way to break out of this pattern, 03:16
and that's why I'm saying, go outside. 03:18
'Cause sometimes the most complicated problems 03:20
have the simplest solutions. 03:22
If you're feeling stuck, and you're looking for answers, 03:25
and you want new ideas, and you wanna change things up 03:27
then the very first thing you should do 03:30
is to leave your house, 03:33
go on a walk to somewhere you haven't gone before. 03:34
By physically going somewhere different 03:38
and taking in the surroundings, 03:40
I guarantee you, (slow relaxing music) 03:42
you will think thoughts you haven't thought before, 03:43
because as it stands, 03:46
if you've been doing the same thing every day, 03:47
you will think the same thoughts that you think every day. 03:49
Because how else are you gonna get a new thought? 03:52
Like what's in your brain is already in there. 03:53
So when something bubbles up from your subconscious, 03:56
it's not gonna feel very new, 03:58
because it was in there the whole time. 04:00
"We don't think ourselves into new ways of living. 04:02
We live ourselves into new ways of thinking." 04:05
Just by doing that often, going for a walk, 04:07
and experiencing something new, 04:11
you'll see your problems from a new perspective, 04:12
you'll gain some distance from your problems, 04:15
because from a distance, even the biggest problems 04:18
can seem small. (slow relaxing music) 04:20
Even the most complicated scenarios 04:21
can start to gain some simplicity, 04:23
and speaking of thinking new thoughts, 04:26
limit your time on YouTube, and Instagram, and TikTok, 04:28
because these algorithmically-dependent platforms 04:31
are the antithesis of thinking new thoughts. 04:35
These apps are literally designed 04:38
to keep you watching the same content constantly. 04:40
Like anybody who spends any time on YouTube 04:43
has the exact same complaint. 04:45
They're like, "Man, I hate my YouTube homepage. 04:46
There's like three channels on here. 04:48
Where's the entire rest of the internet?" 04:50
Like it's wild. (slow relaxing music) 04:52
My own YouTube homepage has, like, three types of videos. 04:53
It's, like, hockey highlights, 04:56
"Rust" gameplay, and chiropractic adjustment compilations. 04:58
Like one day in the entire year, 05:02
your friend could be like, 05:05
"Oh, check out this cool golf video. 05:07
You should watch this funny golf video." 05:09
So you look it up and then you're like, 05:10
"Okay, that was kind of funny, I watched most of that." 05:12
And then for the rest of your life, 05:15
you're recommended golf content, 05:17
you get sucked into this whole, like, golf phase. 05:19
So it's like you get trapped into these, like, 05:22
very sticky topics. 05:25
You get trapped into this, like, mathematical algorithm, 05:27
and your world shrinks, and shrinks, and shrinks 05:32
until you're thinking the same thoughts, 05:34
and watching the same things for the rest of your life. 05:36
Anyways, the world is huge. 05:39
There are so many thoughts to be thought, 05:41
there are so many things to be thunk, 05:43
so many things to experience, so many places to go, 05:45
there are answers to your problems. 05:49
Your giant complicated problems 05:51
might actually have very simple solutions, 05:54
but maybe you just can't see them, 05:56
'cause you're right in the middle of it. 05:58
So go somewhere new physically, go experience something new, 06:00
15 minutes, 20 minutes, go walk somewhere new. 06:03
And while you're out there being a person in the world, 06:07
ask yourself, how can I be motivated by, incentivized by, 06:10
and look forward to the things in my life? 06:15
What problems do I have that if I were to solve them 06:18
my life would be more exciting? 06:22
I wouldn't need to escape all the time, 06:24
and if you feel like you're just in this phase 06:26
of escaping from life, playing lots of video games, 06:28
being on your phone a lot, watching Netflix, 06:31
ask yourself if I keep escaping from reality, 06:34
how do I create a reality I don't want to escape from? 06:38
How can I help myself make my life more exciting 06:41
and more hopeful? 06:45
Hopefully this video gives you some perspective, 06:46
and gives you something to think about, 06:49
because personally in my own life, 06:51
just gaining some distance from my problems 06:53
adds a level of clarity that has been desperately needed. 06:55
Thanks for watching. 06:59

You guys already know that AG1 is my favorite supplement, 07:05

and how good it makes me feel throughout the day. 07:16
Packed with over 75 vitamins, minerals, 07:18
whole foods-sourced superfoods 07:22

to help you feel focused and energized throughout the day, 07:29
and unlike so many basic multivitamins, 07:33

which means that your body can actually absorb it. 07:39
So it can use it in the most effective way possible. 07:42

of the Vitamin D3 and K2 Complex 07:55

And thanks again to Athletic Greens 08:09
for sponsoring this video. 08:11
Increase friction in the way of watching YouTube content. 08:12
Increase friction in the way of watching, 08:17
or browsing social media. 08:20
And while you're in the cave, 08:22
because you have to get dressed, and clean up after work, 08:24
don't design your cave in a way that just keeps you in it, 08:28
that keeps you stuck in it. (car engine roaring) 08:34
So many people just buy bigger TVs, bigger iPhone screens, 08:36
they invest in better hardware for their gaming pc, 08:42
they get a comfier your couch, 08:47
they find ways to make being inside the cave 08:49
as appealing, and as comfortable, 08:52
and as pleasurable as possible. 08:54
But then you have to think 08:57
about incentive structures, right? 08:58
Like, are you interested in, motivated by, 09:01
and incentivized by the things in your life? 09:05
Or are you motivated 09:09
by increasing the quality of your escapes? 09:10
Are you motivated by buying a bigger TV 09:15
so you can watch more YouTube content 09:18
that you don't give a shit about really, 09:21
and it makes you feel terrible? 09:23
Or are you focusing on, (flicker flicking) 09:25
and giving airtime to the types of thoughts 09:28
that make the rest of your life better, 09:31
you know, that help you be a person in the world 09:34
to help you be a character that people know, you know? 09:36
That's why I say things like, let people know your name, 09:41
because even something as simple as that phrase, 09:45
let people know your name, it just implies like, 09:49
yeah, be somebody who people know and think about, 09:53
and, like, you know, they know your character. 09:57
And a lot of the time what you find 10:01
is when you're part of these sub-communities, 10:02
when you go to choir practice, 10:05
when you go to drop-in hockey, 10:08
when you go to this book group that you never go to, 10:11
or where you go to this young adults group at your church, 10:14
or something, right? 10:17
You have all of these things 10:18
that you probably could make an effort to be like, 10:19
"Hey, what's going on with this? 10:22
I know I don't show up, but I wanna start showing up." 10:23
And a lot of the time the people who run these things 10:26
are like, "Oh, thank God. 10:28
Yeah, we could use more people, 10:30
but a lot of the time, like by being a part 10:32
of these communities, 10:35
we learn so much about ourselves, 10:37
because of the role that we play in these sub-communities, 10:40
and I think this is just part of our human nature, 10:44
like we need other people to remind us of who we are. 10:46
And if we don't like, and people are invaluable, 10:52
they provide invaluable feedback too, right? 10:56
Like if you say something 10:59
and jokes just continually don't land, right? 11:01
And you're seen, and people look at you, 11:04
like you have some sort of problem, 11:06
like maybe that's an indication 11:09
that your comic material needs some work. 11:10
Maybe you need to learn how to listen 11:14
instead of just monologue, like me. 11:15

- Before we dive in, I went to the UK recently,
and I took all this footage, (slow relaxing music)
and I have no idea what the hell to do with all of it.
So I'm just gonna let that play
as I'm talking about this stuff.
So I wanted to address a topic
that so many of you guys message me with.
I see it in the comments section all the time.
Comments like, "I feel like every day I live the same day.
I want more than anything to be motivated,
but it just feels like no matter what I do, nothing works.
I feel so stuck." (slow relaxing music)
So maybe you're in that situation
maybe you watch self-improvement content like this,
hoping for an aha moment.
You know, the special sauce,
the secret mindset that'll propel you out
of the current life that you live,
the mindset that will make everything make sense.
But here's the thing, instead of waiting for an aha moment,
you can be doing something a lot simpler.
There's an easier way to escape the mental patterns
you've imprisoned yourself into,
and that is to go outside.
And I know that probably sounds super condescending,
go outside. (slow relaxing music)
How is that gonna solve my financial problems,
make me eat healthier, or stop being depressed?
But here's the thing, yes, I mean, literally go outside,
we'll talk about that in a second,
but I mean, go outside in every sense of the word,

We're living inside our house, inside our room,

being a person in the world exposing ourself to sunlight
and external social scrutiny, we become isolated.
when our mind isn't focused outwards,
and instead completely inwards.
It's like we become toxically self-conscious,
and not self-conscious, (slow relaxing music)
like, "Oh, do these jeans make me look fat?"
But more like we become hyper-aware of our own existence
our thoughts become extremely loud.
We start to obsess about our own thoughts,
and our own ruminations, and our brain needs variety.
You know, a healthy mind goes to different places,
and sees different things, engages in unique challenges,
talks with different people.
So what do we do about it?
You know, not all of us can just quit our jobs,
