Oh 00:14
[Music] 00:24
early in my career as a freelancer I was 00:37
a late-night worker not not like a 00:40
prostitute I would just procrastinate 00:41
through the day and so I couldn't put 00:43
off my work any longer I'd often be up 00:44
past 2:00 a.m. it was until I started 00:46
living with my partner Natalie that I 00:48
decided to shape my schedule around hers 00:50
it's at that point that I fell in love 00:52
with early mornings there's something 00:54
special about watching the Sun Rise with 00:56
a cup of coffee even in a city like Los 00:58
Angeles things seem to go quiet in the 01:00
morning 01:02
well not all the time I usually wake up 01:05
between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. but my 01:08
schedule fluctuates 01:10
I wondered how much more productive 01:11
could I be if I force myself to wake up 01:12
at 5:00 a.m. every single day for 30 01:15
days how much more could I get done how 01:17
would it change my life it didn't go as 01:19
planned 01:23
so I'm gonna be setting up my alarm for 01:25
the 30 days of waking up at 5 a.m. how 01:28
many hours of sleep do you need each 01:33
night we're gonna go with 8 hours so my 01:35
plan is to go to bed 9 p.m. every night 01:38
let's see how this works out getting a 01:42
bed by 9 p.m. isn't isn't a problem I'm 01:45
getting kind of old anyway and that and 01:47
I for a long time we're going to bed 01:51
around 9 o'clock so this is nothing new 01:52
waking up early isn't an excuse to 01:55
neglect sleep the research is clear the 01:58
serious consequences of getting less 02:00
than 7 hours of sleep per night is 02:02
severe according to Matthew Walker's 02:04
best-selling book why we sleep the 02:07
shorter you sleep the shorter your 02:09
lifespan the old maxim I'll sleep when 02:10
I'm dead is therefore unfortunate adopt 02:13
this mindset and you will be dead sooner 02:15
and the quality of that shorter life 02:17
will be worse the real challenge here 02:18
isn't waking up at 5:00 a.m. it's 02:22
getting 8 hours of sleep 02:24
there was an adjustment period for the 02:29
first week it was a bit like jet lag and 02:31
my sleep quality wasn't the greatest for 02:33
the first couple of nights I had to get 02:35
used to going to bed at a different time 02:37
than that but after a couple days I felt 02:39
a lot more like myself and my morning 02:43
started to get a lot more productive 02:45
then I had to deal with the real jet lag 02:46
I'm heading home to New Jersey which is 02:49
three-hour time difference so just as I 02:52
finally got adjusted to these early 02:55
mornings now I'm gonna have to 02:58
completely reset this is probably going 03:00
to be the biggest test so far 03:02
[Music] 03:04
what's that 03:09
yeah LAX that's right Alaska Airlines I 03:11
never would leave an apartment with a 03:14
banana as is a rule of mine never leave 03:17
an apartment with no it's not because 03:20
then you have the skin then you have to 03:24
get rid of and then you just hold onto 03:25
it for 45 minutes 03:27
exactly 45 I'm having a dilemma there's 03:32
nowhere to sleep I'm supposed to be 03:52
sleeping on that couch right there Oh 03:53
perfect thank you mom appreciate it 03:58
I see so it's just past 11:00 now 04:01
finally get into bed I'm getting no 04:07
sleep tonight if there's one thing I've 04:10
learned about habit change it's that 04:16
life gets in the way 04:18
when you least expect it life will punch 04:21
you in the face and that's what happened 04:24
with my trip home 04:29
multiple late nights hanging out with my 04:30
family combined with jet lag 04:32
and I struggled to get quality sleep so 04:34
it's just past 9:00 right now and this 04:37
is I just found out that this is 04:38
daylight savings time it's been a long 04:40
time since I've experienced sleep 04:43
deprivation but that night in particular 04:44
hit me hard over my first two days in 04:46
New Jersey I got a total of nine hours 04:48
of sleep and it completely changed my 04:50
personality 04:52
very few times very few times it's that 04:54
low you weren't just upset and you were 04:57
so frustrated I decided to catch up with 04:59
my sleep and snooze past 5:00 a.m. two 05:03
times during the trip and this is what 05:05
happens to me all the time when I try to 05:13
wake up early or if I try to build a 05:15
habit I try to start exercising 05:16
eventually something's gonna happen 05:18
you're gonna get sick you're gonna 05:20
travel you're gonna go on vacation and 05:21
you're gonna get jet lag and you're not 05:24
gonna be able to keep up with the same 05:25
exact routine that you've been trying to 05:27
build this was just a reminder that I 05:28
need to put my health and my wellness 05:30
first above this religious dedication to 05:32
an arbitrary challenge after getting 05:34
back to LA it took another week until I 05:38
started to get into a rhythm again and 05:39
travel wasn't completely to blame 05:41
so finally after about 20 days of waking 05:47
up at 5:00 a.m. and after a really 05:52
unproductive week one of the most 05:55
unproductive weeks that I've had in a 05:56
while I started to build a bit of a 05:58
morning routine here at 5:00 a.m. that 06:00
works for me and a part of that is by 06:02
5:30 a.m. I'm on my way to go to the gym 06:07
to get a workout in and I found that 06:11
since the Sun at least right now it 06:14
doesn't rise until 7 a.m. it's really 06:16
difficult for me to feel motivated to 06:20
feel like I have the energy to do really 06:22
creative work first thing in the morning 06:24
so if I go to the gym I can get more 06:27
energy I feel good I've gotten something 06:32
personal for myself done at the 06:34
beginning of the day and then by the 06:36
time I get home and shower around then 06:38
the sun's starting to come up and I can 06:40
make a cup of coffee and I'm ready to 06:43
actually get to work so it turns out 06:44
that waking up at 5:00 a.m. every day 06:48
did change my life it just happened to 06:50
be in a negative way well I did have 06:53
about 7 hours and 53 minutes in bed 06:56
every night I didn't get 8 hours of 06:59
sleep 07:02
in fact it usually takes me about 30 07:03
minutes to get to sleep so I probably 07:04
got much less than I needed I noticed 07:06
that my energy levels weren't as high as 07:09
normal and while I did eventually put 07:10
together a routine that worked for me 07:12
going to the gym in the morning and then 07:13
eventually getting to work by 7 a.m. I 07:15
did I wasn't any more productive than I 07:17
normally am and there was just too much 07:19
that I sacrificed you can you can ask 07:21
Natalie I mean she sacrificed a little 07:24
bit too I thought I was complete bull 07:26
I'm exhausted 07:28
why are you exhausted because 07:29
been waking me up for him every morning 07:31
I did not opt into this challenge next 07:33
month with meditation 07:36
yes I'm rather excited to do that with 07:38
you this was another challenge I opted 07:40
into I was forced into one of the things 07:42
that I love most about running my own 07:46
business is having a flexible schedule 07:47
I'm glad that I experimented with this 07:49
ridiculously strict 30-day challenge 07:52
because I know that I'm actually not 07:55
missing out on anything and I'm excited 07:57
to get back to my regular routine of 07:59
waking up between 6 or 7 a.m. because 08:00
well life can get in the way thanks for 08:03
