if you have an addiction that brings you 00:00
great shame or just a nasty nasty bad 00:02
habit that you for some reason can't 00:06
stop doing or even if you have something 00:07
that is a good thing that you want to 00:10
start doing maybe it's going to the gym 00:12
maybe you want to be the type of person 00:14
who goes to the gym but you just can't 00:16
bring yourself to do it maybe you have 00:19
done it successfully a couple days in a 00:21
row usually during the new year but 00:23
something always happens you do the new 00:25
good thing for a little bit or you stop 00:28
doing the bad thing for a little bit but 00:30
a couple days in you start to feel it 00:33
it's like a mounting pressure and all of 00:35
a sudden you have one bad day a day 00:38
where maybe you were a little bit too 00:40
lazy to go to the gym or maybe you were 00:42
a little bit too weak in the willpower 00:44
Department to not do the bad thing that 00:46
you're avoiding and it feels like the 00:48
whole thing comes crashing down you 00:50
lament it's like the House of Cards 00:53
finally came crumbling down and you 00:55
binge yourself to death on the thing you 00:58
are trying to avoid or the old lifestyle 01:00
that you were trying to get away from if 01:03
this has been your story with sticking 01:05
to a new habit change or trying to 01:07
change your life in any meaningful way 01:10
then there's a very good chance that 01:12
you've been falling for the myth of 01:14
vertical progress what is the myth of 01:16
vertical progress I don't know if it's a 01:19
result of Internet self-improvement 01:21
culture or recent studies in habit 01:23
formation psychological something or 01:27
other but everybody seems to have this 01:29
idea that if they just make it to a 01:31
certain amount of days then everything 01:33
will make sense they fetishize 21 days 01:36
or 30 days or 90 days 365 days they 01:39
think to themselves damn me in this 01:44
piece of mode right now if I could only 01:46
make it to 90 days then everything would 01:49
make sense 90 day me is legit he just 01:52
feels better about himself he lives a 01:55
better life he's not by bothered by 01:58
trivial things because he's sort of 02:00
gigachad viewing lifestyle change like 02:03
this is viewing progress as a vertical 02:05
thing you know you stack day two on top 02:09
of day one day three on top of day two 02:12
and then when the stack of days gets big 02:14
enough then your life changes and the 02:17
wild thing is almost everyone thinks 02:19
this way for some reason we think in 02:22
terms of streaks but the issue is that 02:24
no habit that you currently have was 02:27
ever built like this even if you thought 02:30
you were building your habit that way 02:32
the reality of this situation is that 02:33
every single successful day that you had 02:36
you were building progress you were 02:39
strengthening the muscle of that new 02:42
lifestyle so many of us believe that in 02:45
order to change our entire lives all we 02:48
need to do is hit a certain amount of 02:50
days and then everything will make sense 02:53
it's like nothing really matters up 02:55
until that point but then we hit that 02:57
magical number and our lives change 02:59
forever and even if you don't believe 03:01
that sort of dramatic narrative there's 03:03
still a subconscious understanding that 03:06
oh if I just hit this amount of days 03:08
then things will become easier what was 03:10
once unnatural will feel natural you 03:13
know it'll officially be locked in as a 03:15
habit and then I don't need to try very 03:17
hard anymore it's just automatic but the 03:19
problem is not only is this type of 03:22
thinking psychologically inaccurate but 03:24
it also adds so much pressure to hit 03:27
this magical day we're approaching 03:30
lifestyle change as if it's a Jenga 03:32
Tower you know you stack days on top of 03:34
days on top of days and eventually at 03:37
the top you hit your goal but the 03:39
problem with the Jenga Tower is that 03:41
with each block you add it becomes more 03:42
unstable so this pressure of messing up 03:45
becomes bigger and bigger and bigger the 03:48
more days you have under your belt and 03:50
when you think like this it almost 03:52
always feels as if though if you make it 03:54
really far like halfway say your goal is 03:57
90 days and you make it 45 days if you 03:59
mess up after 45 days it's almost like 04:03
the floodgates are open you're like oh I 04:05
knew I couldn't do it and then all of a 04:08
sudden you binge into the old behavior 04:09
and you figure maybe three years from 04:12
now I'm gonna try again but the thing is 04:15
progress is not vertical it's never been 04:17
vertical we're not building a tower 04:21
we're building a road a road that we're 04:23
planning on taking for the rest of our 04:25
lives a road that we do take with each 04:28
day that we partake in that new activity 04:31
because every single habit that you have 04:33
is just a road that leads you to a 04:36
desired destination even your bad habits 04:39
you do them because you get something 04:42
out of it you know they give you some 04:44
sort of feeling that you want to feel 04:47
the problem is that over time as we walk 04:49
a certain road we learn that this road 04:53
is actually pretty treacherous you know 04:56
it hurts us in the long run maybe it's 04:58
infested with Wolves maybe there are 05:00
slopes that make you slip and muddy your 05:02
clothes maybe it's a super inefficient 05:05
route and you're traveling and 05:07
exhausting yourself way longer than you 05:10
need to in order to get your desired 05:12
outcome whatever the case is not all 05:14
roads are created equal sometimes we 05:17
establish roads very early in our lives 05:20
that lead us to this destination that we 05:22
want but we learn as we get older that 05:25
there are way more efficient and 05:28
healthier routes to get to that result 05:30
and this road that we established that 05:32
we laid all these bricks on and created 05:35
this highway on no longer serve us the 05:37
reward it proposes is no longer worth 05:41
the injury we inflict upon ourselves by 05:43
taking this road so we decide through 05:46
our conscious effort to start 05:48
constructing a new road and a lot of the 05:50
time taking this new road to this same 05:53
destination that we want a road that is 05:56
less treacherous a road that won't hurt 05:58
us as much it'll take some work because 06:01
a lot of the time you know you know day 06:04
one day two day three we're all 06:06
motivated to sort of bushwhack and 06:08
create this new road through the weeds 06:10
but in the long run we know that this 06:12
new road is going to be way better way 06:14
more efficient and just a road that we 06:17
want to walk and every single day that 06:19
we opt for this new road instead of the 06:22
old one the old one is starting to grow 06:25
over you know some weeds are starting to 06:27
take effect there's some overgrowth 06:30
starting to develop and every single day 06:32
that we spend working on this new road 06:34
it becomes more comfortable and more 06:36
likely that we use this road in the 06:39
future because we are telling our brain 06:41
that yes this road leads to what we want 06:43
so this new lifestyle that you've been 06:46
working on that you occasionally try 06:48
every January 1st it's still there it's 06:51
always been there but the degree to 06:54
which it's developed is solely based on 06:57
how much you've been using it and just 06:59
because you have a bad day and you 07:02
understandably choose the old road one 07:03
day it doesn't mean that that road that 07:07
new road you're trying to build doesn't 07:09
exist anymore maybe you were tired maybe 07:10
you didn't want to bushwhack that day I 07:12
get it the old road probably looks very 07:15
tempting maybe you forgot why you were 07:17
building the new road but just because 07:19
you picked the old road one day doesn't 07:22
mean all of your progress is lost on the 07:25
new road you're building it's not and it 07:27
feels so much better and more 07:30
encouraging to know that the longer that 07:31
you spend developing the new road 07:34
planting bricks in Solid Ground day 07:36
after day that old road is starting to 07:39
get overgrown the more time you spend on 07:42
this new road through conscious effort 07:45
the easier this road becomes to walk not 07:47
harder there is no mounting pressure so 07:50
if you mess up after one day and you 07:53
want to burn the whole thing down that's 07:55
entirely up to you you can go back back 07:57
and start removing bricks on this new 08:00
Road Brick by Brick but just know that 08:02
it will be through conscious effort 08:05
because it doesn't just explode 08:06
automatically you can choose to abandon 08:08
your new building project and let the 08:10
weeds grow over so that the next time 08:13
that you try it again you have to Bush 08:15
whack right from the start again but it 08:16
will reveal a road that was already 08:19
there that you placed through effort so 08:21
it'll be just that much easier to start 08:23
up on that new road again so hopefully 08:24
this is a profoundly encouraging thought 08:26
changing your entire life has never been 08:29
about okay let's see how far we can go 08:32
with this and if I have one bad day well 08:34
it was worth a shot guess we'll try 08:36
again three years from now it's like no 08:38
we're in the business of developing new 08:40
defaults 08:43
like deep grooves to sink into day by 08:44
day we place a new brick we whack a new 08:47
weed until this road is a far more 08:50
comfortable road to travel to get what 08:52
we want and then eventually by using 08:55
this new road more and more and more The 08:57
Old Road will start to get consumed by 08:59
overgrowth it will become a road that 09:02
just feels very questionable you know 09:05
it's like oh why would we choose that 09:07
road when this road is so much better 09:09
that we've built but it just takes some 09:11
time to get there relinquish yourself of 09:13
the pressure of vertical progress it 09:16
doesn't exist stop chasing these 09:19
arbitrary numbers that have absolutely 09:22
no resemblance to living your life day 09:24
by day decision by decision try to find 09:26
ways to make building this new road as 09:29
easy and as efficient as possible remind 09:32
yourself constantly of why you're 09:34
building this new road and try to help 09:37
yourself develop it so that it's one 09:39
that you prefer taking 10 times out of 09:41
10. Let The Old Road die away and become 09:44
infested with parasites I don't know 09:46
what that was that was kind of stupid 09:49
let's build some roads 09:50
and I want you guys to download the 09:53
audiobook Atomic Habits by James Clear 09:56
using today's video sponsor audible I 09:59
know you've heard this title and this 10:02
author so many times but there is a 10:04
reason for it it's an endlessly 10:06
re-readable book and it reminds you that 10:08
every single time you do a new lifestyle 10:11
thing that you want to do it makes it 10:14
more likely that you do that thing in 10:17
the future not less likely that doesn't 10:18
make any sense so if you already have 10:21
Audible download that audiobook it is 10:23
worth it and if you don't have Audible 10:25
