- Guys, I'm making this video out of necessity. 00:00
There's a large part of me, 00:03
it's been the prevailing part of me as of late, 00:05
that makes me not wanna make this video 00:09
because it's unfiltered 'cause it's not ready. 00:11
What I want to say isn't totally polished. 00:14
I haven't thought of all the shots that I'm gonna use. 00:16
I haven't thought of the lenses that I'm gonna use. 00:19
And this perfectionistic part of me needs to die 00:21
because it's getting in the way 00:25
of what I want to do with my life. 00:27
I've known my whole life that overcomplicating things, 00:29
thinking about them a million times, 00:33
planning things endlessly, 00:35
pales in comparison to doing the thing 00:37
with an unrefined decisiveness. 00:42
Right now, I'm supposed to be editing 00:45
a completely different video 00:47
but it's taking me so long to do it 00:49
and I'm growing so increasingly frustrated with myself 00:51
that I had to pull out this camera 00:56
and talk to you guys about my own inner struggle. 00:58
And hopefully you guys can relate. 01:01
This is why I made this channel. 01:02
It's because I'm trying to live 01:04
and get out there as much as I can, 01:06
gain new experiences, and I will always 01:08
have sort of an aha moment 01:11
that I wanna share with you guys. 01:12
It happens all the time. 01:14
Talking about life and the best way to live it, 01:15
it goes so deeply into the core of my being. 01:18
I never stop talking about this type of stuff, 01:21
but what ends up happening 01:24
is I have something very genuine I want to say, 01:25
then I put on a whole charade around it 01:29
that sometimes by the end of it, 01:32
what I'm saying isn't as genuine. 01:35
It has turned from a core idea that is extremely authentic 01:38
into a little bit of a production. 01:42
And that's not all bad. 01:45
A good example of this is probably my favorite video 01:46
on the channel "Inaction is a Slow Death." 01:49
That video, from beginning to end, 01:51
is probably my favorite video on the channel by far. 01:53
Everything that I said was carefully considered, 01:55
not from a place of trying to sound smart, 01:59
but it was something I genuinely felt 02:03
with every fiber of my being 02:05
and the shots and all the imagery 02:07
that I used to convey this message came naturally. 02:10
It was like, "Oh, of course it'd be so cool if I did this." 02:13
And you know, "I feel like that would be 02:16
such a good moment if this happened." 02:18
But there are other times 02:19
where I kind of forget what I'm doing. 02:21
You know, I sit here because I have a deadline 02:23
for a sponsor, like this video by the way. 02:25
I'll sit here and it's like, 02:27
"Oh, it's time for me to sound smart now. 02:28
Here, when you think about your life..." 02:31
I watched older videos of mine where there's periods 02:33
where I just feel very based 02:37
and I just don't really care about how I'm coming across, 02:39
and I preferred that way more. 02:42
And it just reminded me 02:45
of how overcomplicated I'm making everything. 02:46
And you're probably the same way 02:50
because I have a feeling that I'm not alone 02:52
with my overcomplication. 02:54
I actually feel like procrastination, 02:56
and when you're not living your best life, 02:58
it's just a form of overcomplication. 03:02
I use the gym example all the time 03:04
but I think it's a really good example. 03:06
When you really want to go to the gym. 03:08
Maybe you've gone to the gym very consistently 03:10
in the past and you start thinking about, 03:12
oh how you should be going to the gym more. 03:14
So you start looking up, you know, 03:17
the best workout split to do, 03:19
the best supplements, workout clothes, 03:21
and your mind goes down this rabbit hole 03:24
that has nothing to do with working out 03:27
because all working out is 03:30
is going to the gym and lifting heavy stuff. 03:31
All you need to do to get jacked 03:34
is show up to the gym three days a week, 03:37
push more weight than you did last time, 03:41
and eat more food than you usually do, gradually. 03:44
That's all you need to do. 03:47
And I guarantee you you can have the best physique 03:48
of your life on beans and rice. 03:51
The only catch is, you show up to the gym 03:55
and you try as hard as you can 03:57
to push more weight than you did last time. 03:59
That is it. 04:02
And the person who does that day after day, 04:04
week after week, month after month, 04:06
will be in an infinitely better place 04:09
than the person who knows the best workout split, 04:11
the best supplements, yada, yada, yada, 04:15
the best diet to be on, 04:17
and maybe guiltily convinces himself to go to the gym 04:19
like a few times within that timeframe. 04:23
That person is left in the dust. 04:25
And I feel the same way 04:27
about making content right now, to be honest. 04:28
I'm watching so many people who, you know, 04:30
oh, make worse production value videos than I do 04:32
and they're killing it, you know. 04:36
They are crushing the YouTube game 04:37
because they're making content. 04:39
They're showing up and making videos 04:41
and sometimes it misses and sometimes it's a banger, 04:42
but they're just showing up. 04:46
They're putting in the work 04:48
whether an idea is super refined 04:49
and it's their favorite idea of all time or not, 04:52
they're just showing up, 04:55
talking to the camera, and putting in the work. 04:56
And it's really got me thinking 04:58
about how there is no substitute for putting in the work. 04:59
There is zero substitute. 05:04
And any sort of overcomplication or procrastination, 05:06
it's just denial. 05:10
You're denying the reality that you'll eventually have 05:11
to sit in front of the camera and talk to it. 05:14
You're denying the reality that you'll have 05:16
to drive to the gym and push heavy weights. 05:18
You're denying the reality that you're gonna have 05:21
to sit down and do your taxes and file them 05:23
and it's gonna be very difficult and very boring. 05:26
But it's a reality that you cannot escape from. 05:29
No matter how hard you try, you'll be faced with the suck. 05:31
Shit's gonna suck. 05:36
And the sooner you realize that 05:38
and embrace the suck for what it is, you fully submit to it, 05:40
then right around the corner 05:44
there is the redemptive element of it. 05:46
You embrace the suck and then you're transformed by it. 05:48
You feel good about yourself 05:52
because you're no longer living in this anxious denial. 05:53
You're sitting down, you're doing the hard thing, 05:57
and you're moving your life forward. 05:59
It's that simple. 06:01
Changing your entire life, being a good person, 06:02
being a strong person, developing virtue, eliminating vice. 06:05
There is not a thing that's complicated about it, 06:10
but it's not the same as it being easy. 06:13
It's very difficult, it's very uncomfortable. 06:15
It's a sucky thing. 06:18
But the sooner you can embrace the suck 06:19
the sooner that you can make something out of it. 06:22
You don't have to shroud your life in this anxious regret, 06:25
this denial, this running from, 06:29
"Oh, what if doing my taxes 06:32
is less fun than scrolling Instagram?" 06:34
It is. 06:37
But is scrolling Instagram for 16 hours fun? 06:38
I don't think it's very fun. 06:43
It's like there's dopamine or something, right? 06:45
There's something going on that keeps you doing it 06:47
but your soul leaves your body. 06:50
You start to decay as a human being. 06:52
That's not fun. 06:54
You're not living in this really good, enriching, 06:55
empowering existence when you're doing that. 06:58
You're living in denial. 07:00
But instead of living in a triumphant pain 07:02
you're living in a degenerative pain. 07:05
It's pain either way, but one builds you up 07:08
and makes you feel really good about yourself 07:10
and the other one makes you hardly recognize yourself 07:13
after a long enough period of time. 07:16
Utterly stripping you of your identity. 07:18
So this begs the question, you, watching this right now, 07:20
what are you overcomplicating in your life? 07:24
What is something that you want to make progress on? 07:28
You know, if it's a habit or a lifestyle change or whatever, 07:31
what is that thing and how are you overcomplicating it? 07:35
What creative ways are you employing 07:39
to deny the fact that it sucks? 07:42
So I implore you, I beg you to take a deep breath, 07:44
relinquish all that stress from your body 07:48
and put one foot in front of the other and go do it. 07:51
That's it. 07:54
Yeah, it sucks. 07:55
Embrace it. 07:56
I want to thank Athletic Greens for sponsoring this video 07:58
and for being a cool, chill company 08:02
that lets me say whatever I want, 08:04
whether or not it's related to health and wellness. 08:06
As I've mentioned before, 08:09
Athletic Greens is a unique sponsor 08:10
because I reached out to them, they didn't reach out to me. 08:12
I reached out to them because I used their products 08:16
for like a year and a half or two years 08:18
or something like that, continuously. 08:20
And it made me feel so good that I reached out to them 08:21
and said, "Hey, I would love to rep your stuff." 08:24
I am a huge believer in AG1 08:26
and the way that it makes me feel throughout the day, 08:29
and that's because it's packed 08:31
with over 75 vitamins, minerals, 08:33
whole food-sourced super foods, and adaptogens. 08:36
With every single scoop, AG1 makes sure 08:39
that you're giving your body everything it needs 08:42
to stay focused, energized, healthy, 08:44
and optimized throughout the day. 08:47
Probably my favorite thing about AG1 08:50
is that I essentially ditched my cupboard full 08:52
of various herbal potions and multivitamins and whatnot 08:55
in favor of just a single scoop of AG1. 09:00
It's kind of the simplest way 09:03
to give your body everything it needs to function well. 09:05
So as usual, if you wanna check out Athletic Greens 09:07
and join me in this very simple health optimization habit 09:10
that I've been doing for over two years, 09:14
then click my link in the description below 09:16
and you'll also receive a year's supply 09:18
of the Vitamin d3 and k2 complex, 09:21
which I also have every single morning, 09:24
as well as five AG1 travel packs with your first purchase. 09:26
So make sure to hit up that link 09:30
and thanks again to Athletic Greens 09:32
for sponsoring this video. 09:34
So guys, turn off the phone. 09:35
Stop living in denial. 09:39
Go do what you need to do. 09:40
