hey everyone welcome back to the English
dialogue podcast I am
Mike and I'm Emma we're so glad you're
joining us today for another
conversation today we're diving into a
topic that affects so many people
especially Millennials and Z social
media it's something we all use but is
it doing more harm than good is it
making us lazy or even affecting our
mental health yes we'll be talking about
how social media might be encouraging
laziness emotional breakdowns depression
and this constant feeling of comparison
so let's Jump Right In all right Emma
let's get started with
laziness do you think social media is
actually making people lazy honestly yes
to some extent social media is designed
to keep us scrolling for hours and the
more time we spend scrolling the less
time we spend doing things that actually
make us productive we end up in a
passive State just consuming content
Without Really engaging or
thinking exactly have you noticed how
often we now see terms like Doom
scrolling or binge watching these
weren't really a thing
10 or 15 years ago now it's normal to
spend hours just sitting there scrolling
through content and at the end we feel
exhausted but haven't really done
anything and it's kind of addictive
right we're constantly going back to our
phones looking for the next update or
notification it becomes this Loop and
breaking out of it can feel so difficult
yeah it's like social media Taps into
our desire for instant gratification
we get that dopamine Rush from a like a
comment or even a funny video but over
time we may lose the drive to pursue
things that take longer to accomplish so
Mike let's talk about how social media
might contribute to emotional collapse
and burnout do you think it's making us
more emotionally
fragile absolutely social media can
overload us with information there's so
much news so many opinions so many EXP
expectations all the time people
constantly feel like they have to be on
like they're always
performing exactly and the pressure is
real sometimes it feels like we're
expected to respond immediately to
messages or stay updated with every
Trend it's mentally exhausting and over
time that can lead to
burnout not to mention people are
comparing their lives with the highlight
reels of others when you're constantly
seeing everyone else's best moments it's
easy to feel like your life isn't as
good or that you're not achieving enough
and it's not even just about big things
like careers or
vacations it's little things too like
seeing someone have a perfect workout
routine or an amazing home-cooked meal
even those small things can make us feel
inadequate over time social media and
mental health is this something we
should be concerned about
absolutely studies are showing links
between heavy social media use and
increased rates of depression and
anxiety especially among younger people
it's so true when you're on social media
you're bombarded with images and posts
that can make you feel less than and for
Millennials and genz this can be really
damaging especially if they're already
feeling unsure or
insecure yes and that's partly because
social media creates unrealistic
standards
people only show the best parts of their
lives which can give us a distorted view
of reality and that comparison trap can
be so toxic people start thinking I'll
never be as successful as fit or as
happy as everyone else that feeling of
not Measuring Up can lead to a lot of
negative
emotions it's almost like social media
becomes a mirror but it's a warped
mirror instead of reflecting reality
it's showing the this filtered version
of life that can be really damaging
especially for those who are struggling
with self-esteem Mike do you think that
comparison is something unique to social
media or is it something that's always
been around comparison has always been
around but social media amplifies it
before you might only compare yourself
to the people you see at school at work
or in your
community now you're comparing yourself
to celebrities influencers and people
from all over the world it's a
comparison on a massive scale and it's
all happening in real time you can see
what people are doing right this second
and that can create a lot of fear of
missing out fomo fear of missing out
people feel like they're not doing
enough or that they're missing out on
something
amazing yes and that Foo leads people to
feel dissatisfied with their lives
you're constantly thinking maybe I
should be doing that or going there or
achieving this it becomes exhausting and
can really mess with your sense of
selfworth and we shouldn't underestimate
the impact this has on Mental Health
constantly comparing yourself to others
is emotionally draining over time it can
lead to a lot of self-doubt anxiety and
even
depression so Emma with all these
challenges do you think there's a way to
use social media in a healthier way
I think so it's all about setting
boundaries limiting the amount of time
you spend online being selective about
who you follow and making sure you're
using it to connect in positive ways
rather than just consuming content
passively that's a great point maybe
it's also about remembering that social
media isn't reality it's a curated
version of life people don't post their
struggles their insec ities or the hard
parts of their lives exactly we should
remind ourselves that what we see is
only part of the picture and we can use
social media to connect learn and be
inspired rather than compare it's also
about taking
breaks sometimes just stepping away for
a day or even a few hours can help us
clear our minds and focus on what's real
around us yes those breaks are so
important they help us stay grounded and
remind us of what's real social media
isn't going away but we can choose how
we engage with it well that's it for
today's episode we hope this
conversation gave you something to think
about social media can be a wonderful
tool but it's important to be mindful of
how it affects us absolutely and
remember it's okay to take a break from
social media if it ever feels
overwhelming your m mental health is way
more important than a few likes or

all right now let's dive into some
vocabulary that's really useful
integrate meaning to combine or bring
together different elements to form a
cohesive whole to incorporate new ideas
or systems into existing ones example
the company plans to integrate the new
software into its existing workflow to
improve
efficiency traction meaning gaining
support momentum or progress in a
particular idea plan or initiative often
used to describe how well something is
being accepted or catching on example
the new marketing campaign is gaining
traction with more customers showing
interest in our products long-term
stability meaning a state of being
consistent secure and reliable over an
extended period the absence of
volatility or
instability example investing in
education and Healthcare is crucial for
achieving long-term stability in a
nation's economy substance meaning the
quality of being meaningful significant
or important the actual content or
material of something rather than just
appearance example the report was full
of substance offering valuable data and
insights rather than just superficial
observations indeed
meaning a word used to emphasize a
statement or confirm something that has
been said often shows agreement or
acknowledgement example the project was
challenging but it was indeed a valuable
learning experience for everyone
involved it's almost like social media
becomes a mirror but it's a warped
mirror instead of reflecting reality
it's showing this filtered version of
