the salon just what is the industry all 00:58
about the industry in five words that's 01:01
a tough one 01:03
I 01:05
exciting demanding challenging one more 01:07
sexy every year the average person in 01:12
Britain spends over 300s on haircuts and 01:14
beauty products hairdressing is not just 01:16
about perms and blue rinses it's 01:19
glamorous exciting and cool hair 01:21
stylists these days have the power to 01:23
change the way we look and feel you can 01:25
really truly change people's lives with 01:27
a haircut and to me that is what it's 01:30
all about if we can cut somebody's hair 01:33
or style somebody's hair there's nothing 01:35
there's no better feeling than seeing 01:38
somebody feeling good about themselves 01:40
as a result of this influence some have 01:43
become demigods exalted to the level of 01:45
celebrity hairdresses now are 01:47
celebrities in their own rights they 01:49
appear on chat shows gmtv this morning 01:50
you name it there on it people are 01:53
interested in what headdresses have to 01:54
say what they're doing they're featured 01:55
in the national press the women's 01:57
consumer glosses everywhere you turn 01:58
hairdresses are famous now you know 02:01
hairdressing is you know something a 02:02
little bit like if you're a superm model 02:05
or a photographer or it's an incredible 02:06
uh thing that's going to take you into 02:10
situations that you never dreamt that 02:12
you ever 02:14
would the average hairdresser earns £300 02:15
a week but making it as a celebrity 02:18
hairdresser can bring in as much as 02:20
£4,000 a week hairdressing is a very 02:23
profitable career for those that want to 02:26
do it and for those that want to do it 02:27
well only have to come to the British 02:29
hairdressing WS to see the wealth and 02:30
the money and the success in the room 02:32
they're all driving fantastic cars 02:33
wearing fantastic clothes have the best 02:35
kit available there is money in 02:37
hairdressing if you want to do it and do 02:38
it 02:40
[Music] 02:41
properly what is now a fully working 02:44
state-of-the-art hair and beauty salon 02:46
began Life 3 months ago as a derel South 02:48
London Print 02:51
Works as the work are underway the 02:53
search for the salon staff began from 02:56
the tons of application forms received a 02:59
few hundred went through to the first 03:01
round interviews to um you know wake up 03:03
maybe meditate do a bit of yoga then 03:07
start working about 11 sometimes they 03:09
like to BL on about East Enders and 03:11
whatnot I just sit there and listen I 03:13
like meeting different people especially 03:16
wise people as well I've got a good 03:18
sense of 03:21
wisdom come I've got a lot of bloody 03:22
wand in it you know there you 03:25
go oh 03:28
oh 03:30
yeah up until last year excuse 03:32
[Music] 03:37
me the production team shortlisted a 100 03:39
people to go through to the second round 03:42
to advise with decisions leading experts 03:44
in the world of hairdressing came on 03:46
board as consultants winner of British 03:48
hairdress of the year 03:50
2002 is Beverly Cabella first up is 03:53
Beverly Cabella 03:58
hailed by celebrities and colleagues 04:00
alike as a goddess with scissors Beverly 04:01
is an icon she's the only woman in 04:04
hairdressing history to win the coveted 04:06
British hairdresser of the Year award 04:08
not once but twice in a row the 04:10
hairdressing industry is is an amazing 04:13
career it's such a creative industry 04:15
it's glamorous it's there's so many 04:17
different Avenues you can take from 04:19
being within the salon session 04:21
hairdressing working with celebrities 04:23
going on fashion shoots and fashion 04:25
shows there's hair shows there's 04:27
traveling there's everything on a 04:29
personal level hairdressing really is my 04:31
life um that's that's all I've done 04:33
since the age of 13 Bev's husband 04:35
anestis is also her business partner 04:38
together they are a major force in the 04:40
hairdressing industry anestis will also 04:42
be casting a critical eye over the 04:45
potential Salon staff I'm so looking 04:46
forward to being in charge on this um 04:48
because I think it's important to be 04:51
able to pick a really good cross-section 04:52
of people so that you're going to get a 04:55
few fireworks going on which happens in 04:57
every SLE but I really want to judge 05:00
them one on their personalities and two 05:01
how much they really have a passion for 05:03
the 05:05
industry joining Beverly and denesis is 05:07
Anthony muscolo creative director of 05:09
Tony and Guy the headdress in industry 05:11
for me is you know is is the best 05:13
industry you can be 05:16
in Anthony has been voted British 05:18
hairdresser of the year three times his 05:21
revolutionary haircuts and Cutting Edge 05:23
Photography have kept him at the 05:25
Forefront of the hairdressing industry 05:26
for the last 25 years years with 100 05:28
High Street salons in the UK and 300 05:30
more worldwide Anthony is at the 05:33
creative Helm of a multi-million pound 05:35
hairdressing franchise I started very 05:36
very young you know cuz my father was in 05:39
it and the perception of it from the 05:41
outside is you know we just cut people's 05:43
hair but it's really really quite more 05:45
detailed than that there's such a strong 05:48
education in this industry because what 05:51
you do today is old tomorrow you know 05:53
we're not fashion creators but we're 05:55
hair creators so you're very much part 05:56
of the whole fashion 05:59
industry the manager's job is the first 06:03
position to be decided finding the right 06:06
person is vital to the success of the 06:08
salon cut down from the first round 06:09
interviews to a short list of seven the 06:11
potential managers now face a formidable 06:13
panel joining Beverly Anthony and dentis 06:16
is the salon series editor Shirley Jones 06:18
and the commissioning editor for Channel 06:21
4 Ben FR what do you feel are the 06:22
essential qualities of a manager I've 06:25
been in management for over 20 years and 06:27
management is my 06:30
for I think you've got to be um a team 06:34
player been around the block a bit uh 06:39
run my own Sal for 25 06:42
years it's a great great opportunity to 06:46
to actually you know give the industry a 06:49
huge refreshing insight into like this 06:51
is this is great and it' be great to be 06:53
part of 06:55
that my strengths are a born leader 06:56
[Music] 06:59
you don't have to jump in there The 07:02
Barking mad manager 07:03
rout you got the right people in there 07:06
could come across as being really 07:08
professional and quite a a good thing 07:09
for the 07:12
industry what things will you do in that 07:13
Salon to motivate your sta um I like the 07:16
atmosphere to be upbeat Buzzy and like a 07:19
Clubby type atmosphere and how important 07:22
is it to you to be liked very important 07:25
probably the most important thing in my 07:28
life do you need to be liked you never 07:29
liked as a manager what what will be the 07:32
worst scenario 07:34
where you would have to dismiss somebody 07:36
being rude or swearing at a client to me 07:40
that would be unacceptable well the 07:43
obious ones would be 07:45
drugs 07:46
negligence 07:48
disloyalty um bitchiness things like 07:49
that drugs I guess if you're going to do 07:53
that do it at your own time drug 07:55
abuse alcohol abuse um fighting in the 07:58
salon what's your biggest fear of what 08:02
could happen probably walking down the 08:05
road and somebody goes [ __ ] or or you 08:06
know that sort of thing what do you 08:08
think are your weaknesses I'm probably 08:11
to up front because clearly I wear my 08:13
heart on my sleeve and what's on my lung 08:16
is on my tongue would you uh let your 08:17
staff have relationships with one 08:20
another I don't think you can not 08:22
encourage it if two people fall in love 08:24
or they want a shag then that's kind of 08:26
they will do that whatever you whatever 08:28
you do long as it doesn't affect their 08:29
job the way they work and everything 08:32
else are you're tough my biggest rule is 08:33
leave your problems at home I do not 08:36
want to see you [ __ ] crying over in 08:38
the corner over your boyfriend or your 08:40
sick mother or your that's personal I do 08:42
not care if your mom's been crushed by a 08:45
train it's go 08:46
home are you tough yeah I I was tough 08:48
how short is your fuse 08:52
um 08:56
well you really want me to answer 08:58
that a manager in a top level Salon can 09:02
earn over £100,000 a year it is a 09:05
position of esteem and power to really 09:07
test their Authority each manager is 09:09
asked to role play a scene with a 09:11
stroppy member of Staff the problem is 09:13
that she thinks everyone else in a salon 09:16
is rubbish she doesn't respond to 09:17
criticism because she knows better than 09:20
anyone else tell me what's the problem 09:21
well I don't have a problem I feel that 09:25
you're not really being you know that 09:27
that that enthusiastic towards them what 09:29
you mean that enthusiastic well they 09:31
feel a little bit isolated from you what 09:32
isolated yeah they feel that you're sort 09:36
of you're often doing your own thing 09:37
people have been bitching about me 09:39
behind my I'm pretty with people and if 09:40
they don't come and say it to me but 09:43
what you're saying is the other starlist 09:45
have got a problem with you is that what 09:47
you're saying to me I'm not saying that 09:48
someone else has obviously said it I've 09:49
not said anything you seem to think 09:51
you're better than everyone else in the 09:52
Sal well unfortunately I can't have that 09:54
attitude in the salon what about if we 09:56
did a bit of a seminar or a bit of a 09:58
Suare even so that they could see what 09:59
you do if you can't get the guys on your 10:01
side then your job is on the line Your 10:04
Role is very important and it's 10:06
important to us and it's important to 10:07
your clients to me as well listen guys 10:08
all right right I know what you're 10:12
saying you should be kind of gossiping 10:12
around the C not I think you're a really 10:14
good stylist and I think you got a lot 10:17
of 10:18
potential I think you're a really good 10:19
stylist and I think You' got lots of 10:21
potential let's work on the team and 10:22
bring them up to your level they're on 10:24
the bus and you're just a stylist so go 10:25
home sweetheart 10:28
end of show 10:29
[Applause] 10:34
[Music] 10:39
goodbye I think he all with the 10:40
interviews over the panel discussed the 10:42
contenders Jacqueline was very very 10:44
strong she was good I really like to run 10:48
the confrontational situation she was 10:49
brilliant she brilliant I mean you know 10:51
that was a good manager I personally 10:53
don't know 10:55
whether she was enough to keep me 10:56
interested in watching I don't think I'd 10:59
tune in to watch her they have to take 11:00
control it is their Salon they have to 11:03
run it like a business this is what 11:06
worried me about Clive Clive did not 11:07
take control at all he's he's a lovely 11:09
guy and he's he's probably the fairest 11:12
man on this Earth but they will walk all 11:14
over him it worries me that he regards 11:16
as a TV program instead of approaching 11:19
it as a business it's a real business it 11:23
has to have authority otherwise it falls 11:26
at the 11:28
but I think ad is is the future of 11:29
hairdressing of all the people I saw 11:32
today he certainly would be he really is 11:34
cly passionate about it and he he's good 11:36
I think yeah I think he represents the 11:39
industry well because it is about 11:41
individuality and creativity and passion 11:43
I think Paul is very lik to I think he's 11:46
a young version of Terry think that's 11:47
what Paul is he's got the same qualities 11:49
he's got that flirtatious look he's got 11:51
that kind of Twinkle in his eye yet he's 11:53
also obviously a good manager is he 11:55
strong enough to run this has a serious 11:57
oper the strong strong thought I'm I'm 11:59
not sure I don't know Paul very well but 12:02
I know Terry and some of the things he 12:04
came that came across he's got some very 12:06
good morals actually you know basically 12:07
you're looking at Terry you're looking 12:09
at Paul and you're looking at ay you 12:11
know A's got a great quality of R bomb 12:12
right there in front of everybody but 12:15
the others have got what we want from a 12:17
manager you know or some of what we want 12:19
from a 12:21
manager after much deliberation the 12:22
panel finally made a decision I'm happy 12:25
with that I think we had seven people 12:27
but I think they're the 12:29
oneone everybody agrees I think they'll 12:32
be really good yeah I look forward to 12:34
seeing them yeah it' be 12:35
brilliant coming up in part two the 12:38
shortlisted stylists are put to the test 12:40
and the manager of the salon is revealed 12:42
if people don't meet his expectations 12:45
sloppy work poor standards I mean I'm 12:48
sure you wouldn't have that but he will 12:51
not tolerate 12:52
that 12:57
tomorrow Channel 4 open their high class 13:02
hair and beauty sellon for 5 days a week 13:04
you can book appointments for haircuts 13:08
coloring waxing massage nails and many 13:10
other 13:13
treatments every business needs a boss 13:14
and in a hair and beauty salon the main 13:17
man is the manager pick from a short 13:19
list of seven experienced professionals 13:22
that position has now been 13:24
filled my name is Paul Meritt and I the 13:27
manager of the 13:30
salon I started hairdressing 15 years 13:33
ago and within that time I've kind of 13:35
done various shows seminars I was on the 13:37
fame team for the fellowship which is 13:40
quite a kind of prestigious thing to do 13:42
I've won Next Generation award I've won 13:45
uh image of the Year award I've done 13:47
various front covers for different 13:49
magazines as well at the moment I'm 13:50
working with Nicki Clark and I'm just 13:52
setting up the Manchester Salon previous 13:54
to that I've sort of traveled the world 13:56
really from Mexico Taiwan Japan uh done 13:58
all sorts of jobs Miss Mexico's hair uh 14:02
when we was in Mexico Sal bruny's 14:05
daughters for a photo shoot they just 14:07
fly you out you do your job and where 14:09
you go now I'm in Manchester and I get 14:11
to cut P here on Coronation Street and 14:13
various football 14:16
teams my workmates would probably say a 14:19
bit of a character he's a nice guy but 14:21
it's a bit of an aging rock star he's 14:24
excellent as a boss and he's very good 14:26
with the clients very much a charma with 14:27
the ladies I've got my own unique style 14:29
of leadership which is kind of get them 14:32
on my side uh but if someone pisses me 14:34
off I'm I'm quite a firm kind of guy if 14:37
people don't meet his expectations 14:40
sloppy work poor standards I mean I'm 14:42
sure you wouldn't have that but he will 14:45
not tolerate that whether it's the salon 14:46
or any salon and he'll say and he will 14:48
be the first to say he won't hold back 14:50
in that Sal anyone crosses the line 14:53
anyone crosses the line I I'll have to 14:55
SA 14:58
I'm 35 years old still a bit of a lad um 15:02
I love my gadgets um love my fast cars I 15:07
like my apartment live in always live in 15:11
nice 15:13
Apartments big TV scale electrics you 15:17
know just just kind of a bit of a boy 15:20
really if you come into the cell and get 15:22
your haircut with me you've got an hour 15:24
of my time my job is to make you look 15:26
the best you can possibly look sexy 15:28
beautiful whatever it 15:31
takes I'm going into s to do my job and 15:33
for me every day's got to be exited I'm 15:36
going in there to do my job do it well 15:39
and make it a bit interested this is 15:41
going to be good to 15:44
[Music] 15:45
watch with a manager now in place our 15:47
Consultants turned their attention to 15:50
the stylists Juniors and receptionist 15:52
all were set practical tests and by the 15:54
end 100 hopefuls had passed through the 15:56
the doors under the watchful eyes of 15:58
Beverly and Anthony the first 16:00
receptionist went into action it was her 16:02
job to organize the hair models and pair 16:04
each stylist with a junior Sandra 16:06
immediately impressed Beverly and 16:09
Anthony with her professional approach I 16:10
think she was very good I mean she was 16:12
pretty scary I got be right in there but 16:15
she smiled straight away yeah very 16:17
strong yeah smiled and she was she knew 16:19
she knew her stuff you knew where 16:21
everyone should go organize everyone 16:23
with with ease I think reception is the 16:25
nucleus of any salon and if if things go 16:27
wrong there it goes wrong everywhere so 16:29
I think she I think she was great all 16:31
the potential stylists are trained 16:33
industry professionals they were 16:35
scrutinized and tested as they would 16:37
have been for any job interview we're 16:38
looking for the way that you work as a 16:40
stylist and as a 16:41
[Music] 16:43
junior she is quite 16:56
a girl yes okay nice breasts yeah which 16:59
is great but what I'm saying but making 17:02
her her head almost looking smaller than 17:03
her breast got some laminat gel nice 17:05
Sleek really fresh looking really sort 17:07
of 17:10
she while Beverly checked the quality of 17:15
the work Anthony and anestis were in 17:17
reception as another batch of stylists 17:19
arrived in front of you if you want to 17:21
put your bags in 17:23
there as Group after group came through 17:26
the door it got loud it got hectic and 17:28
it got hot and to make matters worse 17:31
Anthony was yet to be impressed some of 17:34
them are cutting well I mean uh they're 17:36
finishing you know and it could be 17:39
nerves but I don't think so you know how 17:42
to do it or you anus meanwhile was 17:44
pleased by the work of Brazilian 17:46
Ricardo wonderful good 17:50
job keep after narrowly missing the 17:53
manager's job ad was asked back to try 17:55
out as a 17:58
stylist what do you think of uh a I 17:59
think he definitely has a passion and 18:02
he's really into it he cares about what 18:04
he does the way he goes about doing 18:06
things is very unorthodox but there's 18:08
nothing wrong with that apart from ad 18:10
Anthony also saw potential in the work 18:12
of other stylists such as Sonia fun just 18:14
have a 18:17
look very nice down blast it good 18:21
job 18:27
it was a bit of a rush at the end but we 18:30
got there in the end I was a bit 18:32
apprehensive at face coming in cuz 18:35
obviously you don't know what to expect 18:36
the first 10 minutes it's like whether 18:38
my client is big and fat and angly 18:41
whatever she can be I can always make it 18:42
wor for them why do we always get the 18:45
long curly head mon always the Short 18:46
Straw it went really well I'm very happy 18:48
with what I did I'm okay I mean I cut my 18:50
finger all of a sudden I just saw Blood 18:53
on the floor and I was 18:55
like I think everything went quite quite 18:56
smoothly no problems and you know I was 19:00
quite happy with the results as 19:02
[Music] 19:06
well Terry H after the rigorous 19:10
practical assessment Salon manager Paul 19:13
met those shortlisted by Beverly Anthony 19:15
and anestis for a onetoone 19:17
chat so who impressed enough to make it 19:22
into the 19:26
salon 19:27
hi my name is Ricardo I'm from Brazil 19:31
and I'm going to be a stylist in the 19:34
salon I've been hairdressing for about 3 19:36
years now just over quite perfectionist 19:39
whatever do you think well I think the 19:42
French you think the French I think the 19:44
fren if a client was to go to Ricardo in 19:46
the salon he's just an absolute 19:48
perfectionist they go for a nice haircut 19:50
but they probably enjoy the drama the 19:52
outrageousness cuz you never seen 19:54
anything like it before in your life 19:56
basically I've been in London now for 19:57
over 12 years I just love my freedom I 19:59
just love the shopping I I will always 20:03
like shopping it just part of me from 20:06
Bond Street to charity shops a a 20:09
[Music] 20:15
a I've got this silk and all the bit of 20:16
dresses and high heels coats hot pants 20:20
dresses here Bell t-shirts got here 20:25
leggings it makes me feel good just bang 20:28
bang bang my Saturn in Sund I just go 20:31
for 20:34
it I had a few friends and they they 20:36

salon I'm originally from ashborn in 21:20
darbishire which is the Peak District um 21:22
I started hairdressing about 11 years 21:25
ago I won uh Midland's headdress of the 21:27
year I started my own business and Mom 21:30
and Dad kindly offered to convert the 21:32
garage into a hairdress and salon and 21:34
then I used to get out in my little car 21:36
around the lanes going to clients houses 21:38
well one time I went to this lady's 21:41
house and uh she told me that I could 21:42
stay for dinner and I was in snakes skin 21:45
trousers and a leather top we went into 21:48
this really Posh room and uh the room 21:51
was full of 21:53
Vickers I moved to London about a year 21:56
and a half ago and I went into a big 21:59

and making people look really good I've 22:03
cut uh Deb from Coronation Street he was 22:06
good fun down to earth my work makes 22:08
think I'm really happy a good laugh good 22:11
to get on with hard working she's Lively 22:14
she makes the clients very happy also 22:17
she's uh very friendly with everybody 22:21
now I'm in London of course every time I 22:25
come over to see the family dad's sat in 22:26
the chair with the cape on and the 22:28
Clippers out and I get rubed into doing 22:29
the whole family's hair if you come into 22:32
the salon and get me to cut your hair 22:34
you'll get entertainment um a damn good 22:36
haircut uh I'll make you feel very 22:39
relaxed and comfortable and send you out 22:41
looking a million 22:44

irritate me about hairdressing is when 22:50
you're cutting someone's head you've 22:51
done a consultation and you just started 22:53
cutting the good they're doing this I'm 22:55
like like will you leave your hair alone 22:57
please and I will when a client is in my 22:59
chair I'm the 23:01

governor my name is AD Feelin and I'm a 23:08
stylist in a salon got into hairdressing 23:10
5 years ago before I was hairdressing I 23:14
was painting and decorating believe it 23:17
or not and uh then I went in for the 23:19
British hairdress in Awards in 2000 and 23:21
W men's British hairdress of year which 23:23
was a great it was a great feeling to do 23:25

of people with like no teeth and glasses 24:06
this 24:08
big I just love going in there and eat 24:10
my Pie Mash read my 24:12
paper love playing po I just go out to 24:17
have a bit of fun all the things that 24:20
gazers 24:23
do if someone comes into the Salon what 24:26
they're going to get from me is they're 24:28
going to get something fresh they're 24:29
going to get something cool I'm not 24:30
saying I'm going to give every single 24:32
client a mad haircut but I'm certainly 24:33
going to be doing my style of hairdress 24:35
I make sure no matter what problems I've 24:37
got on my plate or problems at work I 24:39
give them an hour of my time and for 24:42
that hour make them feel like a VIP 24:44
that's what it's all about it's about 24:46
making that person leave that shot on 24:47
them giving it I really really enjoy 24:49
that I'm just going to be myself and 24:51
that's my objective is to be myself and 24:55
enjoy and and if people don't like the 24:57
energy that I give back well tough not 24:59
interested if they do fantastic I'm Ain 25:02
going to go out my way to be horrible 25:04
I'm just going to go out of the way to 25:06

hairdressing experience it also has a 25:16
beauty spa with jacuzzi and sauna in 25:18
part three the beauty therapists who 25:21
hope to work there face a testing time 25:23
why didn't you do one cut and then one 25:25
coat why don't you put some cream on 25:28
there I'd like you to change that for me 25:29
if you don't 25:31
mind ad Ricardo and Sonia have been 25:39
employed as stylists in the 25:42
salon but the salon is not just about 25:45
the haircuts there's also a beauty 25:48
Spar over the next 8 weeks you'll be 25:50
able to book appointments for anything 25:53
from a facial to a bikini wax 25:55
semi-permanent makeup to a 25:57
massage to carry out these treatments 26:00
two Beauty therapists will be 26:02
needed shavat Singh was asked to test 26:06
the potential Beauty therapists she's a 26:09
highly respected figure in the industry 26:11
regularly mentioned in the pages of 26:13
tatler and Vogue as a leading Beauty 26:14
therapist her celebrity Cleon tell 26:16
include Heather McCartney and El 26:18
mcferson I've been a beauty therapist 26:19
for 15 years very hard work but I love 26:21
it before the beauty industry was a bit 26:25
quiet and slow because it it was a taboo 26:28
subject but now you get women coming in 26:31
regularly for manicures regularly for 26:33
pedicures waxing the successful 26:35
therapist that will make it into the 26:38
salon will have to be 26:39
intelligent um 26:43
perfectionist I really want to get out 26:45
of that cliche of therapist being known 26:47
as thick dumb we're not thick we're not 26:50
dumb and it wasn't the last result 26:53
because we didn't do well at school 26:55
[Music] 26:58
shavat tested a short list of 12 Beauty 27:01
therapists each had to Showcase their 27:03
technique and professionalism by 27:06
performing four treatments a 27:08
massage a 27:10
facial a leg 27:13
wax and a nail 27:15
treatment under chat's critical eye no 27:22
mistake went 27:25
unnoticed why didn't you do one coat and 27:26
then one coat and then go back to two 27:29
why didn't you put some cream on there 27:32
I'd like you to change that for me if 27:34
you don't mind just for Hygiene reasons 27:36
do you want to move that on bit further 27:38
up to you thank you suzan how long have 27:40
you been a beauty therapist 6 years 6 27:43
years mhm 27:46
suzan um very 27:49
thorough methodical 27:52
organized um mature how long did you say 27:54
you've been doing Beauty therapy for 5 27:58
and a half years the twins really sweet 28:00
cute um the waxing was a little 28:05
poor um but they came in their element 28:09
when it came to their facials they were 28:12
just they loved doing it you could see 28:15
pressure points on the face someone to 28:18
have to fill in 28:20
Sonia beautiful girl really 28:22
attractive but 28:25
she just wasn't an allrounder I've 28:28
actually got my own Salon you have yes 28:30
so how long you Salon Coke without you 28:32
being there Sabrina 28:33
great I don't think there's anything 28:36
else I can say about her great 28:38
personality 28:40
intelligent in 28:42
control at the end of the session shavat 28:45
deliberated about who to put through to 28:47
the final 28:49
interview as with the stylists Paul got 28:51
the chance to meet those shortlisted by 28:54
shat areas that passionate about I love 28:55
treating skin I've been told to be 28:58
nervous of you uh you're you're the big 29:00
bad boss I mean you should try to 29:02
synchronize massage that is that is yeah 29:04
that is the one good we're talking 29:08
friction the two Beauty therapists hired 29:14
for the salon are Sabrina and 29:16
[Music] 29:20
Suzanne I'm originally from clay k k 29:24
there um and I came over to England when 29:27
I was 17 so I've been here for 13 years 29:30
I went to college for 2 years studying 29:33
Beauty therapy and after that I opened 29:35
up the salon which I've had for 6 years 29:37
now absolutely love it I've worked 29:40
really really hard clients are all 29:42
excellent it's like a big kind of happy 29:43
family really in that 29:45
Salon when we go home you know for a 29:47
weekend and you're having a conversation 29:50
it'll be racing or you're definitely 29:52
going to have a bet so the end of the 29:54
you know I always have a look and see 29:56
what's happening and then I'll go and 29:58
have a couple of bets on Saturday when 29:59
I'm in the salon hopefully I'll bring a 30:01
bit of laughter and a few giggles and a 30:03
few Smiles the things that irritate me 30:05
are um people worried about time what's 30:07
10 minutes what's you know half an hour 30:09
at the end of the day God made time you 30:12
made plenty of it you know as long as 30:14
you're not like half a day late thank 30:16
you very much I'll see you in the new 30:17
year then okay thanks the end of the day 30:19
I don't think I'm cool um I'm a country 30:22
bumpkin 30:26
[Music] 30:28
I've been in the beauty industry and 30:32
nail industry for 9 years since I left 30:33
College really so I've covered 30:37
everything to do with beauty I have my 30:39
own nail business and it I run it thin a 30:42
concession and a hairdressing Salon I've 30:44
ended up working especially in Nails 30:47
because it's interesting it's instant 30:49
the results are instant so as soon as 30:52
you apply the product and you've 30:54
sculpted the nail or apply the nail you 30:56
have a result straight away zf's been 30:59
doing my nails for about 5 years now and 31:01
she knows what I like she knows the 31:03
shape I like and the quality is very 31:05
very good she brilliant at her job 31:07
fantastic nails look at mine um pretty 31:10
cool 31:15
girl I'm actually a very homely girl 31:17
I'll be honest with even though I do 31:19
like the idea of going out partying and 31:21
things like that I do enjoy my home I 31:23
enjoy my family I'm very close to my 31:26
family whether not just my immediate 31:28
family which is my mom and my dad and my 31:29
brother but my aunties my uncles my 31:31
cousins I've got a relationship with all 31:34
of them even to the youngest you know um 31:35
living at home is absolutely fantastic 31:39
you know what I mean because at the end 31:41
of the day what more can you want with 31:42
your mom and dad around yeah I'm very 31:44
close to her that's why she's still at 31:46
home and I miss my dad's cooking I me 31:48
washing for me uh but I will um I will 31:51
miss I will miss them 31:55
with construction of the salon complete 32:01
the finishing touches were 32:03
applied after 3 months of hard work it 32:11
has been transformed from an old Print 32:13
Works into a state-of-the-art hair and 32:15
beauty 32:18
salon on the other side of town the team 32:20
needed to staff the salon get together 32:23
for a publicity photo shoot is the first 32:24
opportunity they have to meet the people 32:27
they will be working with for the next 2 32:28
months joining Paul ad Ricardo Sonia 32:30
Sabrina and Suzanne are the final three 32:37
staff a junior a colorist and a 32:40
receptionist the youngest member of the 32:44
team at 18 Oliver joins the salon as a 32:46
junior in the beauty spa I look 32:48
[Music] 32:51
sexy I've been at London College of 32:55
therapy 32:58
since August um it's a really good laugh 32:59
it's basically entails um manicures 33:02
pedicures facials I do waxing that 33:06
includes bikini if someone comes in and 33:09
they need a bikini wax down and I'm 33:12
available I'll say you know you want me 33:14
to do it for you it's s up to them if 33:15
they say yeah I'll do it or no I'll do 33:17
it I've never met a male be therapist 33:18
that's what sort of prompted me to do it 33:21
my mom was like treatments are a load of 33:23
rubbish you know they just was of money 33:25
you don't get anything from them cut her 33:27
feet out did her pedicure and afterwards 33:29
she was so pleased she's like oh they 33:32
look really nice and she's looking at 33:34
them and now she's I've got her can I 33:36
have a facial can I have a massage like 33:38
yeah okay I've been proud of him all the 33:40
way through his career and his schooling 33:42
but this is something that I would never 33:45
have believed he would have been doing 33:47
he's very friendly so he would work well 33:49
with people coming into the salon as 33:51
well as the people within the salon the 33:54
workers I think I think definitely go in 33:56
there and just be myself and enjoy it 33:58
I'm not going to do anything more than 34:00
that next is Melanie she will assist the 34:05
stylists and color 34:08
[Music] 34:13
hair my mom was a hairdresser so I've 34:16
always been around her doing 34:19
hairdressing and I've always not been 34:21
interested in school just getting my 34:23
hands on and doing people's hair and 34:25
makeup and all that sort of stuff I'm 34:27
still living at home with my mom my dad 34:30
and my brother James my dad is 110% 34:32
behind me he thinks this a brilliant 34:35
opportunity I told her to uh marry the 34:37
first millionaire she meets my mother's 34:40
not so sure because we're so close as 34:42
soon as you know she's home from work 34:45
it's the house is just alive so that I 34:46
will miss I spend a lot of time with the 34:49
girls so we all go out to go 34:52
clubing 34:55
[Music] 34:59
I go out to uh have a good dance I also 35:04
go to have a little chat with the 35:08
opposite sex London is massive in 35:10
hairdressing so I won't experience all 35:13
that I think my biggest dream is to my 35:15
own salon and win loads of 35:18
awards I really like to do real Young's 35:22
highlights and um and I wouldn't mind 35:25
doing dfort BL highlights as well 35:27
because they've got that kind of floppy 35:29
hair which always looks nice 35:30
highlighted um and any like nice blow 35:32
dry on Kylie or something would be quite 35:35
cool whatever 35:37
anyone the reception area is the nucleus 35:39
of any Salon to meet greet and keep the 35:42
customers happy is 35:45
Sandra currently I'm a head receptionist 35:48
for sa Bea COV 35:50
gardeny being a have receptionist is 35:55
like providing good customer service 35:58
making sure the customer knows what's 36:00
going to happen how they are making sure 36:01
they're comfortable and settled um but 36:04
other than that I mean I'm a good laugh 36:06
I love having a good time I feel gutted 36:08
that she's leaving um I mean hopefully 36:11
it won't be for too long so but I know 36:14
she'll be really successful in the salon 36:16
my family my family they're all mad the 36:18
Mad F of Sicilians they are my parents 36:20
came over from Sicily about 38 years ago 36:23
suay a fluffy girl you know goodlooking 36:26
full of a spirit always she Smiley 36:29
always happy she never got problems 36:32
people can tell I'm very Italian like 36:34
not just because of my looks or whatever 36:36
but because of my fiery temper and my 36:38
passion s has got many emotions I mean 36:39
and she's like could be the life and 36:43
soul of the party but if you catch her 36:45
at the wrong moment she snaps and I 36:47
would not want to be someone trying to 36:50
chat her up when she's in a bad mood I 36:52
do like a good laugh and I could be 36:55
quite loud as well but I like to be 36:56
entertaining I'm the type of person I 36:58
can't sit still and you know if I get 36:59
bored quite easily I've got to prance 37:02
around or do something stupid or have a 37:03
laugh I love socializing um I love 37:05
having friends around 37:08
entertaining where I currently work at 37:10
the M people look at me a bit like a 37:12
mother figure I'm always there to pick 37:13
people up or people can talk to me about 37:15
anything so I've got a good ear and a 37:16
big 37:19

color on all of it the thing we put the 42:46
dark color on the top over all of it is 42:49
you're going to then have Roots I mean 42:51
you've seen them I've only literally got 42:53
a few but there definitely there what I 42:55
do is whatever your natural color is go 42:57
One Tone darker and that way when The 43:00
Roots come through it doesn't look so 43:03
apparent so what happens if you put dark 43:04
color on this color hair yeah it's going 43:06
to look like you're gone Bal when your 43:09
roots grow you never know who's going to 43:10
be the next client to come through the 43:12
cellon doors Tony is an ex- army 43:14
Sergeant Major he's come to see Sabrina 43:16
for an all over self-tanning treatment 43:18
hello are you Tony that's correct how 43:20
are you today I'm very well good you 43:23
looking forward to your treat I can't 43:25
wait Oliver and Sabrina will be doing 43:28
the treatment would you would you prefer 43:31
him to shower would you prefer I prefer 43:33
him to shower so he's nice and clean 43:34
mean we do that then if that's okay 43:36
that's fine okay so is he wearing 43:38
Tangers she ask does he want a thong or 43:40
T I don't know what it is these 43:46
bras are they I don't know are these the 43:49
men's panties oh let's have a 43:51
look sorry everyone you know we 43:54
are thugs they're thugs oh we can't have 43:57
one of them 44:00
on do you want one of these mate won 44:01
hold anything in bless him men don't 44:04
have to though men are quite all right 44:06
they can just wear their own underwear 44:07
you don't have to get them honestly 44:09
that's the pre right it's not taking 44:11
them off though mate I'm telling 44:12

[Music]
this is the channel for Salon staffed by
a team of Industry professionals and
equipped with state-of-the-art cutting
stations back washes and beauty spa
every year in Britain over 300 million
visits are made to salons and spas
giving the hair and beauty industry an
annual turnover of £ 4.1
billion but from tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
the doors will open and you will be able
to book appointments for anything from a
simple trim to a brand new image from
leg waxing and facials to bikini wax and
Botox all completely free but why open
the salon just what is the industry all
about the industry in five words that's
a tough one
I
exciting demanding challenging one more
sexy every year the average person in
Britain spends over 300s on haircuts and
beauty products hairdressing is not just
about perms and blue rinses it's
glamorous exciting and cool hair
stylists these days have the power to
change the way we look and feel you can
really truly change people's lives with
a haircut and to me that is what it's
all about if we can cut somebody's hair
or style somebody's hair there's nothing
there's no better feeling than seeing
somebody feeling good about themselves
as a result of this influence some have
become demigods exalted to the level of
celebrity hairdresses now are
celebrities in their own rights they
appear on chat shows gmtv this morning
you name it there on it people are
interested in what headdresses have to
say what they're doing they're featured
in the national press the women's
consumer glosses everywhere you turn
hairdresses are famous now you know
hairdressing is you know something a
little bit like if you're a superm model
or a photographer or it's an incredible
uh thing that's going to take you into
situations that you never dreamt that
you ever
would the average hairdresser earns £300
a week but making it as a celebrity
hairdresser can bring in as much as
£4,000 a week hairdressing is a very
profitable career for those that want to
do it and for those that want to do it
well only have to come to the British
hairdressing WS to see the wealth and
the money and the success in the room
they're all driving fantastic cars
wearing fantastic clothes have the best
kit available there is money in
hairdressing if you want to do it and do
it
[Music]
properly what is now a fully working
state-of-the-art hair and beauty salon
began Life 3 months ago as a derel South
London Print
Works as the work are underway the
search for the salon staff began from
the tons of application forms received a
few hundred went through to the first
round interviews to um you know wake up
maybe meditate do a bit of yoga then
start working about 11 sometimes they
like to BL on about East Enders and
whatnot I just sit there and listen I
like meeting different people especially
wise people as well I've got a good
sense of
wisdom come I've got a lot of bloody
wand in it you know there you
go oh
oh
yeah up until last year excuse
[Music]
me the production team shortlisted a 100
people to go through to the second round
to advise with decisions leading experts
in the world of hairdressing came on
board as consultants winner of British
hairdress of the year
2002 is Beverly Cabella first up is
Beverly Cabella
hailed by celebrities and colleagues
alike as a goddess with scissors Beverly
is an icon she's the only woman in
hairdressing history to win the coveted
British hairdresser of the Year award
not once but twice in a row the
hairdressing industry is is an amazing
career it's such a creative industry
it's glamorous it's there's so many
different Avenues you can take from
being within the salon session
hairdressing working with celebrities
going on fashion shoots and fashion
shows there's hair shows there's
traveling there's everything on a
personal level hairdressing really is my
life um that's that's all I've done
since the age of 13 Bev's husband
anestis is also her business partner
together they are a major force in the
hairdressing industry anestis will also
be casting a critical eye over the
potential Salon staff I'm so looking
forward to being in charge on this um
because I think it's important to be
able to pick a really good cross-section
of people so that you're going to get a
few fireworks going on which happens in
every SLE but I really want to judge
them one on their personalities and two
how much they really have a passion for
the
industry joining Beverly and denesis is
Anthony muscolo creative director of
Tony and Guy the headdress in industry
for me is you know is is the best
industry you can be
in Anthony has been voted British
hairdresser of the year three times his
revolutionary haircuts and Cutting Edge
Photography have kept him at the
Forefront of the hairdressing industry
for the last 25 years years with 100
High Street salons in the UK and 300
more worldwide Anthony is at the
creative Helm of a multi-million pound
hairdressing franchise I started very
very young you know cuz my father was in
it and the perception of it from the
outside is you know we just cut people's
hair but it's really really quite more
detailed than that there's such a strong
education in this industry because what
you do today is old tomorrow you know
we're not fashion creators but we're
hair creators so you're very much part
of the whole fashion
industry the manager's job is the first
position to be decided finding the right
person is vital to the success of the
salon cut down from the first round
interviews to a short list of seven the
potential managers now face a formidable
panel joining Beverly Anthony and dentis
is the salon series editor Shirley Jones
and the commissioning editor for Channel
4 Ben FR what do you feel are the
essential qualities of a manager I've
been in management for over 20 years and
management is my
for I think you've got to be um a team
player been around the block a bit uh
run my own Sal for 25
years it's a great great opportunity to
to actually you know give the industry a
huge refreshing insight into like this
is this is great and it' be great to be
part of
that my strengths are a born leader
[Music]
you don't have to jump in there The
Barking mad manager
rout you got the right people in there
could come across as being really
professional and quite a a good thing
for the
industry what things will you do in that
Salon to motivate your sta um I like the
atmosphere to be upbeat Buzzy and like a
Clubby type atmosphere and how important
is it to you to be liked very important
probably the most important thing in my
life do you need to be liked you never
liked as a manager what what will be the
worst scenario
where you would have to dismiss somebody
being rude or swearing at a client to me
that would be unacceptable well the
obious ones would be
drugs
negligence
disloyalty um bitchiness things like
that drugs I guess if you're going to do
that do it at your own time drug
abuse alcohol abuse um fighting in the
salon what's your biggest fear of what
could happen probably walking down the
road and somebody goes [ __ ] or or you
know that sort of thing what do you
think are your weaknesses I'm probably
to up front because clearly I wear my
heart on my sleeve and what's on my lung
is on my tongue would you uh let your
staff have relationships with one
another I don't think you can not
encourage it if two people fall in love
or they want a shag then that's kind of
they will do that whatever you whatever
you do long as it doesn't affect their
job the way they work and everything
else are you're tough my biggest rule is
leave your problems at home I do not
want to see you [ __ ] crying over in
the corner over your boyfriend or your
sick mother or your that's personal I do
not care if your mom's been crushed by a
train it's go
home are you tough yeah I I was tough
how short is your fuse
um
well you really want me to answer
that a manager in a top level Salon can
earn over £100,000 a year it is a
position of esteem and power to really
test their Authority each manager is
asked to role play a scene with a
stroppy member of Staff the problem is
that she thinks everyone else in a salon
is rubbish she doesn't respond to
criticism because she knows better than
anyone else tell me what's the problem
well I don't have a problem I feel that
you're not really being you know that
that that enthusiastic towards them what
you mean that enthusiastic well they
feel a little bit isolated from you what
isolated yeah they feel that you're sort
of you're often doing your own thing
people have been bitching about me
behind my I'm pretty with people and if
they don't come and say it to me but
what you're saying is the other starlist
have got a problem with you is that what
you're saying to me I'm not saying that
someone else has obviously said it I've
not said anything you seem to think
you're better than everyone else in the
Sal well unfortunately I can't have that
attitude in the salon what about if we
did a bit of a seminar or a bit of a
Suare even so that they could see what
you do if you can't get the guys on your
side then your job is on the line Your
Role is very important and it's
important to us and it's important to
your clients to me as well listen guys
all right right I know what you're
saying you should be kind of gossiping
around the C not I think you're a really
good stylist and I think you got a lot
of
potential I think you're a really good
stylist and I think You' got lots of
potential let's work on the team and
bring them up to your level they're on
the bus and you're just a stylist so go
home sweetheart
end of show
[Applause]
[Music]
goodbye I think he all with the
interviews over the panel discussed the
contenders Jacqueline was very very
strong she was good I really like to run
the confrontational situation she was
brilliant she brilliant I mean you know
that was a good manager I personally
don't know
whether she was enough to keep me
interested in watching I don't think I'd
tune in to watch her they have to take
control it is their Salon they have to
run it like a business this is what
worried me about Clive Clive did not
take control at all he's he's a lovely
guy and he's he's probably the fairest
man on this Earth but they will walk all
over him it worries me that he regards
as a TV program instead of approaching
it as a business it's a real business it
has to have authority otherwise it falls
at the
but I think ad is is the future of
hairdressing of all the people I saw
today he certainly would be he really is
cly passionate about it and he he's good
I think yeah I think he represents the
industry well because it is about
individuality and creativity and passion
I think Paul is very lik to I think he's
a young version of Terry think that's
what Paul is he's got the same qualities
he's got that flirtatious look he's got
that kind of Twinkle in his eye yet he's
also obviously a good manager is he
strong enough to run this has a serious
oper the strong strong thought I'm I'm
not sure I don't know Paul very well but
I know Terry and some of the things he
came that came across he's got some very
good morals actually you know basically
you're looking at Terry you're looking
at Paul and you're looking at ay you
know A's got a great quality of R bomb
right there in front of everybody but
the others have got what we want from a
manager you know or some of what we want
from a
manager after much deliberation the
panel finally made a decision I'm happy
with that I think we had seven people
but I think they're the
oneone everybody agrees I think they'll
be really good yeah I look forward to
seeing them yeah it' be
brilliant coming up in part two the
shortlisted stylists are put to the test
and the manager of the salon is revealed
if people don't meet his expectations
sloppy work poor standards I mean I'm
sure you wouldn't have that but he will
not tolerate
that
tomorrow Channel 4 open their high class
hair and beauty sellon for 5 days a week
you can book appointments for haircuts
coloring waxing massage nails and many
other
treatments every business needs a boss
and in a hair and beauty salon the main
man is the manager pick from a short
list of seven experienced professionals
that position has now been
filled my name is Paul Meritt and I the
manager of the
salon I started hairdressing 15 years
ago and within that time I've kind of
done various shows seminars I was on the
fame team for the fellowship which is
quite a kind of prestigious thing to do
I've won Next Generation award I've won
uh image of the Year award I've done
various front covers for different
magazines as well at the moment I'm
working with Nicki Clark and I'm just
setting up the Manchester Salon previous
to that I've sort of traveled the world
really from Mexico Taiwan Japan uh done
all sorts of jobs Miss Mexico's hair uh
when we was in Mexico Sal bruny's
daughters for a photo shoot they just
fly you out you do your job and where
you go now I'm in Manchester and I get
to cut P here on Coronation Street and
various football
teams my workmates would probably say a
bit of a character he's a nice guy but
it's a bit of an aging rock star he's
excellent as a boss and he's very good
with the clients very much a charma with
the ladies I've got my own unique style
of leadership which is kind of get them
on my side uh but if someone pisses me
off I'm I'm quite a firm kind of guy if
people don't meet his expectations
sloppy work poor standards I mean I'm
sure you wouldn't have that but he will
not tolerate that whether it's the salon
or any salon and he'll say and he will
be the first to say he won't hold back
in that Sal anyone crosses the line
anyone crosses the line I I'll have to
SA
I'm 35 years old still a bit of a lad um
I love my gadgets um love my fast cars I
like my apartment live in always live in
nice
Apartments big TV scale electrics you
know just just kind of a bit of a boy
really if you come into the cell and get
your haircut with me you've got an hour
of my time my job is to make you look
the best you can possibly look sexy
beautiful whatever it
takes I'm going into s to do my job and
for me every day's got to be exited I'm
going in there to do my job do it well
and make it a bit interested this is
going to be good to
[Music]
watch with a manager now in place our
Consultants turned their attention to
the stylists Juniors and receptionist
all were set practical tests and by the
end 100 hopefuls had passed through the
the doors under the watchful eyes of
Beverly and Anthony the first
receptionist went into action it was her
job to organize the hair models and pair
each stylist with a junior Sandra
immediately impressed Beverly and
Anthony with her professional approach I
think she was very good I mean she was
pretty scary I got be right in there but
she smiled straight away yeah very
strong yeah smiled and she was she knew
she knew her stuff you knew where
everyone should go organize everyone
with with ease I think reception is the
nucleus of any salon and if if things go
wrong there it goes wrong everywhere so
I think she I think she was great all
the potential stylists are trained
industry professionals they were
scrutinized and tested as they would
have been for any job interview we're
looking for the way that you work as a
stylist and as a
[Music]
junior she is quite
a girl yes okay nice breasts yeah which
is great but what I'm saying but making
her her head almost looking smaller than
her breast got some laminat gel nice
Sleek really fresh looking really sort
of
she while Beverly checked the quality of
the work Anthony and anestis were in
reception as another batch of stylists
arrived in front of you if you want to
put your bags in
there as Group after group came through
the door it got loud it got hectic and
it got hot and to make matters worse
Anthony was yet to be impressed some of
them are cutting well I mean uh they're
finishing you know and it could be
nerves but I don't think so you know how
to do it or you anus meanwhile was
pleased by the work of Brazilian
Ricardo wonderful good
job keep after narrowly missing the
manager's job ad was asked back to try
out as a
stylist what do you think of uh a I
think he definitely has a passion and
he's really into it he cares about what
he does the way he goes about doing
things is very unorthodox but there's
nothing wrong with that apart from ad
Anthony also saw potential in the work
of other stylists such as Sonia fun just
have a
look very nice down blast it good
job
it was a bit of a rush at the end but we
got there in the end I was a bit
apprehensive at face coming in cuz
obviously you don't know what to expect
the first 10 minutes it's like whether
my client is big and fat and angly
whatever she can be I can always make it
wor for them why do we always get the
long curly head mon always the Short
Straw it went really well I'm very happy
with what I did I'm okay I mean I cut my
finger all of a sudden I just saw Blood
on the floor and I was
like I think everything went quite quite
smoothly no problems and you know I was
quite happy with the results as
[Music]
well Terry H after the rigorous
practical assessment Salon manager Paul
met those shortlisted by Beverly Anthony
and anestis for a onetoone
chat so who impressed enough to make it
into the
salon
hi my name is Ricardo I'm from Brazil
and I'm going to be a stylist in the
salon I've been hairdressing for about 3
years now just over quite perfectionist
whatever do you think well I think the
French you think the French I think the
fren if a client was to go to Ricardo in
the salon he's just an absolute
perfectionist they go for a nice haircut
but they probably enjoy the drama the
outrageousness cuz you never seen
anything like it before in your life
basically I've been in London now for
over 12 years I just love my freedom I
just love the shopping I I will always
like shopping it just part of me from
Bond Street to charity shops a a
[Music]
a I've got this silk and all the bit of
dresses and high heels coats hot pants
dresses here Bell t-shirts got here
leggings it makes me feel good just bang
bang bang my Saturn in Sund I just go
for
it I had a few friends and they they
tried to convince me why don't you dress
up in Dragon one day I said oh that
might be fun so I just um just went and
bought myself a dress bought myself um a
wig shoes and off I
[Music]
went
I'm really looking forward to working as
you know and just to get there and just
entertain people have a laugh with my
work colleagues I don't want to stress
I'm going to have a good
[Music]
time my name is Sonia Riley I'm 29 years
old and I'm a hair stylist in the
salon I'm originally from ashborn in
darbishire which is the Peak District um
I started hairdressing about 11 years
ago I won uh Midland's headdress of the
year I started my own business and Mom
and Dad kindly offered to convert the
garage into a hairdress and salon and
then I used to get out in my little car
around the lanes going to clients houses
well one time I went to this lady's
house and uh she told me that I could
stay for dinner and I was in snakes skin
trousers and a leather top we went into
this really Posh room and uh the room
was full of
Vickers I moved to London about a year
and a half ago and I went into a big
Salon I like creating different styles
and making people look really good I've
cut uh Deb from Coronation Street he was
good fun down to earth my work makes
think I'm really happy a good laugh good
to get on with hard working she's Lively
she makes the clients very happy also
she's uh very friendly with everybody
now I'm in London of course every time I
come over to see the family dad's sat in
the chair with the cape on and the
Clippers out and I get rubed into doing
the whole family's hair if you come into
the salon and get me to cut your hair
you'll get entertainment um a damn good
haircut uh I'll make you feel very
relaxed and comfortable and send you out
looking a million
[Music]
dollars the things that annoy me or
irritate me about hairdressing is when
you're cutting someone's head you've
done a consultation and you just started
cutting the good they're doing this I'm
like like will you leave your hair alone
please and I will when a client is in my
chair I'm the
[Music]
[Applause]
governor my name is AD Feelin and I'm a
stylist in a salon got into hairdressing
5 years ago before I was hairdressing I
was painting and decorating believe it
or not and uh then I went in for the
British hairdress in Awards in 2000 and
W men's British hairdress of year which
was a great it was a great feeling to do
that then 2000 2 image of the year for
the uh for the Beckham uh cover the GQ
cover this goes to Mr character himself
Aiden
felen and I do everything from
Builders to glamour models to hookers to
businessmen to entertainers to
footballers to celebrities I mean I get
it all I mean like sort of like doing
lies and melli I mean she's just an
amazing eccentric flamboy wonderful
woman hold it down
BL every single Monday I go to my p m
shop I love
it you know it's going there it's full
of people with like no teeth and glasses
this
big I just love going in there and eat
my Pie Mash read my
paper love playing po I just go out to
have a bit of fun all the things that
gazers
do if someone comes into the Salon what
they're going to get from me is they're
going to get something fresh they're
going to get something cool I'm not
saying I'm going to give every single
client a mad haircut but I'm certainly
going to be doing my style of hairdress
I make sure no matter what problems I've
got on my plate or problems at work I
give them an hour of my time and for
that hour make them feel like a VIP
that's what it's all about it's about
making that person leave that shot on
them giving it I really really enjoy
that I'm just going to be myself and
that's my objective is to be myself and
enjoy and and if people don't like the
energy that I give back well tough not
interested if they do fantastic I'm Ain
going to go out my way to be horrible
I'm just going to go out of the way to
be me end of [ __ ]

story The Salon isn't only a
hairdressing experience it also has a
beauty spa with jacuzzi and sauna in
part three the beauty therapists who
hope to work there face a testing time
why didn't you do one cut and then one
coat why don't you put some cream on
there I'd like you to change that for me
if you don't
mind ad Ricardo and Sonia have been
employed as stylists in the
salon but the salon is not just about
the haircuts there's also a beauty
Spar over the next 8 weeks you'll be
able to book appointments for anything
from a facial to a bikini wax
semi-permanent makeup to a
massage to carry out these treatments
two Beauty therapists will be
needed shavat Singh was asked to test
the potential Beauty therapists she's a
highly respected figure in the industry
regularly mentioned in the pages of
tatler and Vogue as a leading Beauty
therapist her celebrity Cleon tell
include Heather McCartney and El
mcferson I've been a beauty therapist
for 15 years very hard work but I love
it before the beauty industry was a bit
quiet and slow because it it was a taboo
subject but now you get women coming in
regularly for manicures regularly for
pedicures waxing the successful
therapist that will make it into the
salon will have to be
intelligent um
perfectionist I really want to get out
of that cliche of therapist being known
as thick dumb we're not thick we're not
dumb and it wasn't the last result
because we didn't do well at school
[Music]
shavat tested a short list of 12 Beauty
therapists each had to Showcase their
technique and professionalism by
performing four treatments a
massage a
facial a leg
wax and a nail
treatment under chat's critical eye no
mistake went
unnoticed why didn't you do one coat and
then one coat and then go back to two
why didn't you put some cream on there
I'd like you to change that for me if
you don't mind just for Hygiene reasons
do you want to move that on bit further
up to you thank you suzan how long have
you been a beauty therapist 6 years 6
years mhm
suzan um very
thorough methodical
organized um mature how long did you say
you've been doing Beauty therapy for 5
and a half years the twins really sweet
cute um the waxing was a little
poor um but they came in their element
when it came to their facials they were
just they loved doing it you could see
pressure points on the face someone to
have to fill in
Sonia beautiful girl really
attractive but
she just wasn't an allrounder I've
actually got my own Salon you have yes
so how long you Salon Coke without you
being there Sabrina
great I don't think there's anything
else I can say about her great
personality
intelligent in
control at the end of the session shavat
deliberated about who to put through to
the final
interview as with the stylists Paul got
the chance to meet those shortlisted by
shat areas that passionate about I love
treating skin I've been told to be
nervous of you uh you're you're the big
bad boss I mean you should try to
synchronize massage that is that is yeah
that is the one good we're talking
friction the two Beauty therapists hired
for the salon are Sabrina and
[Music]
Suzanne I'm originally from clay k k
there um and I came over to England when
I was 17 so I've been here for 13 years
I went to college for 2 years studying
Beauty therapy and after that I opened
up the salon which I've had for 6 years
now absolutely love it I've worked
really really hard clients are all
excellent it's like a big kind of happy
family really in that
Salon when we go home you know for a
weekend and you're having a conversation
it'll be racing or you're definitely
going to have a bet so the end of the
you know I always have a look and see
what's happening and then I'll go and
have a couple of bets on Saturday when
I'm in the salon hopefully I'll bring a
bit of laughter and a few giggles and a
few Smiles the things that irritate me
are um people worried about time what's
10 minutes what's you know half an hour
at the end of the day God made time you
made plenty of it you know as long as
you're not like half a day late thank
you very much I'll see you in the new
year then okay thanks the end of the day
I don't think I'm cool um I'm a country
bumpkin
[Music]
I've been in the beauty industry and
nail industry for 9 years since I left
College really so I've covered
everything to do with beauty I have my
own nail business and it I run it thin a
concession and a hairdressing Salon I've
ended up working especially in Nails
because it's interesting it's instant
the results are instant so as soon as
you apply the product and you've
sculpted the nail or apply the nail you
have a result straight away zf's been
doing my nails for about 5 years now and
she knows what I like she knows the
shape I like and the quality is very
very good she brilliant at her job
fantastic nails look at mine um pretty
cool
girl I'm actually a very homely girl
I'll be honest with even though I do
like the idea of going out partying and
things like that I do enjoy my home I
enjoy my family I'm very close to my
family whether not just my immediate
family which is my mom and my dad and my
brother but my aunties my uncles my
cousins I've got a relationship with all
of them even to the youngest you know um
living at home is absolutely fantastic
you know what I mean because at the end
of the day what more can you want with
your mom and dad around yeah I'm very
close to her that's why she's still at
home and I miss my dad's cooking I me
washing for me uh but I will um I will
miss I will miss them
with construction of the salon complete
the finishing touches were
applied after 3 months of hard work it
has been transformed from an old Print
Works into a state-of-the-art hair and
beauty
salon on the other side of town the team
needed to staff the salon get together
for a publicity photo shoot is the first
opportunity they have to meet the people
they will be working with for the next 2
months joining Paul ad Ricardo Sonia
Sabrina and Suzanne are the final three
staff a junior a colorist and a
receptionist the youngest member of the
team at 18 Oliver joins the salon as a
junior in the beauty spa I look
[Music]
sexy I've been at London College of
therapy
since August um it's a really good laugh
it's basically entails um manicures
pedicures facials I do waxing that
includes bikini if someone comes in and
they need a bikini wax down and I'm
available I'll say you know you want me
to do it for you it's s up to them if
they say yeah I'll do it or no I'll do
it I've never met a male be therapist
that's what sort of prompted me to do it
my mom was like treatments are a load of
rubbish you know they just was of money
you don't get anything from them cut her
feet out did her pedicure and afterwards
she was so pleased she's like oh they
look really nice and she's looking at
them and now she's I've got her can I
have a facial can I have a massage like
yeah okay I've been proud of him all the
way through his career and his schooling
but this is something that I would never
have believed he would have been doing
he's very friendly so he would work well
with people coming into the salon as
well as the people within the salon the
workers I think I think definitely go in
there and just be myself and enjoy it
I'm not going to do anything more than
that next is Melanie she will assist the
stylists and color
[Music]
hair my mom was a hairdresser so I've
always been around her doing
hairdressing and I've always not been
interested in school just getting my
hands on and doing people's hair and
makeup and all that sort of stuff I'm
still living at home with my mom my dad
and my brother James my dad is 110%
behind me he thinks this a brilliant
opportunity I told her to uh marry the
first millionaire she meets my mother's
not so sure because we're so close as
soon as you know she's home from work
it's the house is just alive so that I
will miss I spend a lot of time with the
girls so we all go out to go
clubing
[Music]
I go out to uh have a good dance I also
go to have a little chat with the
opposite sex London is massive in
hairdressing so I won't experience all
that I think my biggest dream is to my
own salon and win loads of
awards I really like to do real Young's
highlights and um and I wouldn't mind
doing dfort BL highlights as well
because they've got that kind of floppy
hair which always looks nice
highlighted um and any like nice blow
dry on Kylie or something would be quite
cool whatever
anyone the reception area is the nucleus
of any Salon to meet greet and keep the
customers happy is
Sandra currently I'm a head receptionist
for sa Bea COV
gardeny being a have receptionist is
like providing good customer service
making sure the customer knows what's
going to happen how they are making sure
they're comfortable and settled um but
other than that I mean I'm a good laugh
I love having a good time I feel gutted
that she's leaving um I mean hopefully
it won't be for too long so but I know
she'll be really successful in the salon
my family my family they're all mad the
Mad F of Sicilians they are my parents
came over from Sicily about 38 years ago
suay a fluffy girl you know goodlooking
full of a spirit always she Smiley
always happy she never got problems
people can tell I'm very Italian like
not just because of my looks or whatever
but because of my fiery temper and my
passion s has got many emotions I mean
and she's like could be the life and
soul of the party but if you catch her
at the wrong moment she snaps and I
would not want to be someone trying to
chat her up when she's in a bad mood I
do like a good laugh and I could be
quite loud as well but I like to be
entertaining I'm the type of person I
can't sit still and you know if I get
bored quite easily I've got to prance
around or do something stupid or have a
laugh I love socializing um I love
having friends around
entertaining where I currently work at
the M people look at me a bit like a
mother figure I'm always there to pick
people up or people can talk to me about
anything so I've got a good ear and a
big
[Music]

Key Grammar Structures

  • every year in Britain over 300 million visits are made to salons and spas

    ➔ Present Simple Passive

➔ The sentence uses the present simple passive to describe a recurring action. "Are made" is the passive form of the verb, emphasizing the action rather than the doer.

  • giving the hair and beauty industry an annual turnover of £4.1 billion

    ➔ Present Participle

➔ The phrase uses the present participle "giving" to show an action that occurs simultaneously with the main clause. It acts as a verb here, describing the effect of the visits on the industry.

  • but from tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. the doors will open

    ➔ Future Simple

➔ The sentence uses the future simple tense with "will open" to describe an action that will happen at a specific time in the future. It indicates a definite plan or prediction.

  • all completely free but why open the salon

    ➔ Adverbial Clause

➔ The phrase "but why open the salon" is an adverbial clause that expresses contrast and reason. It modifies the main clause by questioning the purpose of the action.

  • the industry in five words that's a tough one

    ➔ Appositive Phrase

➔ The phrase "that's a tough one" is an appositive phrase that renames or explains the noun "the industry in five words." It provides additional information in a concise way.

  • every year the average person in Britain spends over 300s on haircuts and beauty products

➔ Present Simple with Adverbial Phrase

➔ The sentence uses the present simple tense with an adverbial phrase "every year" to describe a habitual action. It emphasizes the frequency of the action.

  • hairdressing is not just about perms and blue rinses it's glamorous exciting and cool

    ➔ Correlation of Tenses

➔ The sentence uses the present simple tense in both clauses to maintain consistency. The second clause "it's glamorous exciting and cool" is a subjective description that follows the main clause.

  • you can really truly change people's lives with a haircut

    ➔ Emphatic Adverbs

➔ The sentence uses emphatic adverbs "really" and "truly" to stress the importance of the action. They intensify the meaning of the verb "change."

  • as a result of this influence some have become demigods

    ➔ Result Clause

➔ The phrase "as a result of this influence" is a result clause that explains the outcome of the main clause. It shows the effect of the influence on the subject.

  • they appear on chat shows gmtv this morning you name it there on it

    ➔ Ellipsis

➔ The sentence uses ellipsis to omit repeated words, making it more concise. "You name it there on it" implies that they appear on any show you can think of.
