bremma School 18 months ago it's her 00:24
first job as a head 00:27
teacher why I wanted to be a head 00:28
teacher why would you want to be a head 00:31
teacher it's a mad mad mad job right 00:33
what shoes should I wear 00:36
today when I started here there was an 00:38
awful lot of work to do the results were 00:40
nowhere near good enough nowhere near 00:43
what these kids are capable of achieving 00:44
but the 00:47
opportunity to shape of school is a 00:48
really exciting 00:51
one too depressing 00:53
[Music] 00:56
more like 01:00
[Music] 01:01
[Applause] 01:02
him good morning good morning good 01:07
morning let Get your coats off cut off 01:09
please I am proud of the school cuz 01:11
schools aren't just about getting exam 01:13
results it's about creating happy 01:15
successful and resilient young people 01:18
who have got the skills to go and do 01:21
battle in that tough old world out there 01:23
good morning I'm going to countdown and 01:26
then I'm locking the gates in her 01:28
mission to improve the school Miss Smith 01:30
is backed up by a team of over a 100 01:32
staff I need T your shirt in you look a 01:34
mess you're not in uniform on Monday we 01:37
going to put in the exclusion room 01:39
including Mr Palumbo sir I'll will have 01:41
my blazer on Monday I just don't have it 01:43
today you see that he raised his fist at 01:45
me assistant head you're the last person 01:47
in if you keep running Miss Hillman 01:50
faster than that to cut out the 01:53
cigarettes mate Deputy head 01:55
and one of her latest recruits Mr bisf 02:00
hey n n who's new to teaching gentlemen 02:03
come in Miss Smith took him on 18 months 02:09
ago as part of a learn on the job 02:12
training placement when I first met Mr 02:14
bisam I was really impressed by his 02:18
passion let's look ready let's get let's 02:22
get going got gr on ready to learn but 02:25
he was quite intimidated by what was 02:28
ahead of him because I thought of 02:31
suddenly being in front 30 year NES is a 02:33
big old 02:37
ask fight the power how would you 02:39
describe your style um 50% stand up and 02:42
50% motivational speeches wakey wakey I 02:46
want them to sort of dance in and ready 02:50
to learn and you know Mr bisf fam you're 02:53
amazing okay right right listen up we 02:56
are now into our third week of much to 03:00
do about nothing we've watched it we've 03:03
had a look a bit of context Joseph that 03:05
is my name you actually look like one so 03:08
you Jewish no I'm not Jewish okay you 03:10
look Turkish he actually 03:13
doesn't he doesn't look turkey he does 03:15
look like Turkish he looks maian no no 03:18
no maian what is it cyprian he looks 03:21
like um cisum whatever it's called right 03:24
cypria um I'm not any of those things uh 03:26
right year nine my biggest challenge is 03:29
that year nine 03:33
class the year nine girls are a um a 03:34
force of nature what are you doing 03:39
hiding from Tiana shazar Tiana 03:42
AAA and S yeah this is taking too long I 03:47
don't know but I think without us then 03:51
like the class would be a bit boring Kaa 03:53
what girls it's only 03:57
B I know it's only bant but this is not 04:00
the time for bant sorry this is the time 04:03
for 04:05
worker how would the kid describe you De 04:06
Record um I think that's a really good 04:09
question he looks like a little teddy 04:16
bear with BD head and with a little bit 04:18
it's quite funny when he loses his 04:22
temper he gets really frustrated and he 04:23
goes he's stresses his lips like go all 04:25
in and like even the little even his Bal 04:29
bit goes bright red everything is so 04:32
funny I think you can tell the teachers 04:34
name yeah only because they're like 04:36
jumpy I I wouldn't want to be a new 04:40
teacher how does Shak SP trade attitudes 04:44
to women act 04:46
141 yeah n yeah n yeah n yeah n yeah 04:48
N I would challenge anyone to stand in 04:53
front of those girls and not be a little 04:56
bit daunted I think his best dress he's 04:58
always flustering around in the clock 05:01
shut 05:03
up so that's 05:04
rude Tony is one of Mr bisf fam's most 05:08
vocal year 05:11
[Music] 05:12
NES 05:14
don't T's always singing when it goes 05:16
quiet in class you can just hear doed 05:19
tones of 05:21
Tony it's quite sweet 05:23
[Music] 05:26
really at the end of year N9 Tony hopes 05:28
to leave Frederick bremma she's recently 05:31
auditioned for the Performing Arts Brit 05:34
School in South London can we do the 05:36
work please oh you're such a good girl I 05:38
want to go to the B school hopefully go 05:41
University or hopefully before all that 05:45
get as my mom says gets get noticed in 05:47
the crowd what does it mean I don't know 05:51
it sounds good though doesn't it 05:54
fantastic I want to be a artist singer 05:57
or an actress or possibly both I 06:00
wouldn't mind being in these senders I 06:03
could be Bianca's long lost sister or 06:05
something yes I don't want to no you're 06:08
not you can't miss heal my Mona come I 06:10
don't know is there anything you're not 06:12
supposed to have in earrings got M since 06:14
she's auditioned for the Brit School T's 06:18
desire to stand out from the crowd has 06:20
caught the eye of Deputy head Miss 06:22
Hillman no you're not allowed no peons 06:24
at all stay there and Miss see you in a 06:27
minute all 06:29
right I don't see what's the point of 06:33
not having no peons because it's not 06:35
going to affect no learning at the end 06:37
of the 06:39
day right so you need to comply with the 06:41
school rules and you need to take the 06:45
piercing out and if you get into the 06:48
Brit school and I really hope that you 06:49
do then that's fantastic but at the 06:51
moment you're at Frederick brema you see 06:54
it's an interesting one about your 06:55
reference to the britz gone as well 06:56
because if I was writing reference I 06:58
would have so many glowing things to say 07:00
about you but I would say at the bottom 07:01
sometimes Tony finds it difficult to 07:04
follow School procedures CU I would have 07:06
no option other than to do that so I 07:08
want to make sure that you are 07:11
absolutely crystal clear what this will 07:12
mean if you don't take it out yeah sure 07:15
yeah okay and how did the interview go 07:20
um yeah it was all right my nun was like 07:22
she's a determined girl did she go with 07:25
you your n yeah you are a very 07:27
determined girl and that's why we're in 07:29
this situation at the moment because you 07:31
are a determined girl but that 07:33
determination about the wrong things 07:35
will not lead to Greatness at all all 07:37
right 07:39
[Music] 07:45
bye-bye right good morning is it worth 07:47
saying anything about piercing um well 07:51
I'm on a bit of a piercing Mish cuz I'm 07:53
wondering whether it's worth saying to 07:56
staff that the only piercing aloud is in 07:57
single in the ear I'm so anal about but 08:01
they what the year n I'm ad about my 08:05
P Nigel don't go 08:11
[Music] 08:14
there I would like you to imagine you 08:21
are hero I would it's mid morning and Mr 08:24
bisam has his year n class yeah what 08:27
would you say as a modern person he 08:30
joined frit Bremer 18 months ago through 08:33
the teach first scheme after leaving a 08:35
career in politics I became increasingly 08:37
disaffected with the political sphere I 08:40
mean it's quite self- serving and not 08:43
really making a difference which is what 08:45
I wanted to do I want you to write your 08:46
own response to claudo if you got called 08:48
a a rotten orange and a one which means 08:50
a prostitute this term he's trying to 08:52
engage his year NES in Shakespeare 08:55
teaching Shakespeare is a challenge 08:57
they just don't see how it's relevant to 09:00
them they don't understand its power 09:01
they're just like what but if you bring 09:04
it alive they'll learn and I really 09:08
fundamentally believe that so I can't 09:11
wait to perform this yes so can I I 09:13
would like everyone to stand up yes I 09:16
want you all to direct the most angry 09:18
response that you can when I say the 09:22
lines give not this rotten orange to 09:24
your friend 09:28
side and 09:29
S go what that me 09:30
got are you mad 09:35
no so don't come in and talk any rubbish 09:39
to me in my face yet idiotic boy I'll 09:41
stab you in your penis me 09:44
one having me as a wife in 09:48
it guys guys what are you doing what are 09:52
you 09:56
doing why you see for 09:57
can everyone get to their seats please 10:01
stop it okay back to your seats 10:03
three 10:07
two 10:09
one when it goes wrong and especially 10:10
when it goes spectacularly wrong me your 10:13
heart plummet you've worked on this 10:15
lesson you've wanted it to be good 10:17
you're also concerned about the progress 10:19
that these kids are showing and then it 10:20
falls to part every time I turn my back 10:24
something was happening that was quite 10:29
frankly dangerous I'm waiting for a 10:32
second so I think the people are ready 10:35
to listen well I think we're all ready 10:36
to listen I don't at the moment On's not 10:38
ready to listen we are ready to listen 10:40
when I first started teaching it feels 10:44
like a million years ago it wasn't 10:46
actually that long ago yeah it was hard 10:47
because I came in with an absolute 10:50
idealism of why I wanted to do the job 10:52
and actually what you realize very 10:55
quickly is it's really hard to balance 10:56
the idea with the difficulties of 10:58
dealing with a group of adolescents it's 11:00
really actually bloody hard this 11:02
job I don't want to be a ordinary 11:05
teacher I don't want to be coming in to 11:08
get a paycheck rolling out a lesson I've 11:11
done before that's going to get them 11:14
past their exams but not going to 11:15
inspire any 11:16
interest but there's so much I find 11:18
really challenging about the 11:21
[Music] 11:22
job see you later Mr bitam how are you 11:25
I'm good thank you how are you I'm fine 11:29
um I don't know how you feel about this 11:32
that I need to come and do a lesson 11:34
observation yeah fine particularly 11:36
interest in your year n class yeah um 11:38
that would be that' be good yeah yeah 11:41
definitely yeah no no that's absolutely 11:45
fun um brilliant 11:48
[Music] 11:50
it's Monday 12:01
lunchtime and practice for Tony and the 12:05
rest of the school 12:08
[Music] 12:10
choir everyone 12:12
your like 12:15
professionals T is still waiting to hear 12:19
if she's got into the Brit school but 12:21
she's not the only one that's 12:23
auditioning her best friend Alice is 12:25
also competing for 12:28
[Music] 12:30
Place well we've known each other all 12:37
our lives because we we live next to 12:39
each other so we always used to shout 12:40
out each other she used to jum jum nice 12:42
to clam my fence give her a day look I 12:44
like having my hair and face done but 12:47
I'm not going to lose weight because 12:49
somebody tells me to I make music to be 12:50
a musician not to be on the cover of 12:52
Playboy it's fantastic she's good at 12:55
singing 12:58
acting and she's good at dancing Miss 13:00
I've got an audition tomorrow so I'm not 13:03
in school what's your audition for the 13:04
the 13:06
Brit you'll break my heart if you 13:07
leave don't tell no one now no one 13:10
supposed to know if she got in and I 13:13
didn't I'd be really upset and I keep 13:15
thinking about it and and it's 13:18
just it makes my heart pump a lot 13:21
because it gets me scared yeah 13:26
bye see you not everyone knows about the 13:29
B school is that if I don't get in then 13:32
I have to go through people winding me 13:35
up about it so it's best if no one knows 13:38
about 13:41
it the answer is 13:44
dreams I had a lot of Dreams everyone 13:48
stand up I like stand up in four weeks 13:51
Mr bisam has an observation of his year 13:54
n class with head teacher Miss Smith 13:56
this term he's using roleplay to engage 13:59
them in Shakespeare one of you is 14:01
Benedict and the other is beatric I 14:04
would like you to practice how you think 14:06
these lies should be said to each other 14:08
off you go but keep your way I got name 14:10
I think Tony has got a lot of talents 14:13
you know she's quite an actress projects 14:16
her voice very well to be honest with 14:18
you always at the right time move 14:21
man you have to have key characters come 14:24
with you and if you've got them they 14:27
will take the whole class with them so 14:30
if I can get her on side you know I am 14:31
happy and confident we're going to have 14:33
a great lesson who would like to have a 14:35
go and showing people how they think it 14:37
should be read Tony up you go 14:38
okay Tiana Tiana face turn Face line 104 14:41
I'm gonna start laughing Tony you want 14:46
to right Tony sorry they wouldn't have 14:53
this at the brid school would they now 14:56
[Music] 14:59
what did he so why are you saying 15:02
that because you said to me you you 15:04
wanted you that's what you said to us at 15:06
the beginning the year why you B it oh 15:07
my God I don't want to do it don't worry 15:10
some people didn't hear no I don't care 15:14
that's pissed me off I don't even know 15:16
what he said 15:18
stop well to me it is this is no one 15:20
knows about him what he say nothing I'm 15:24
not going to carry on what he said why 15:26
going to ba out what he said if you 15:29
didn't hear then he [ __ ] didn't 15:30
hear off everyone sit down everyone sit 15:32
[Music] 15:38
down right okay toita Leila Andre zah 15:43
Tay Rabel leave them on the front 15:49
someone will collect them in a second 15:53
[Music] 16:00
Tony yeah look at me I don't want to why 16:02
are you angry at me because no one knows 16:06
that I've auditioned for the Brit school 16:08
cuz if I didn't know You' audition for 16:10
The Brit school so how did you know 16:11
because I was I was referring to the 16:13
fact that remember at the beginning of 16:14
the year you were talking about how you 16:15
really really wanted to go to the Brit 16:17
school now I was just trying to 16:19
encourage you to do some drama if I'd 16:20
known of course I wouldn't have brought 16:22
it up do you accept my apology yes you 16:24
can't swear at people Tony 16:27
right you're being quite rude now 16:30
nothing but calmly sorry p i I would 16:32
like it to be a proper apology not you 16:35
looking your bag tning I'd like you 16:37
to sorry sir okay I really really 16:40
appreciate that apology and you accept 16:44
mine yeah shake shake on it you don't 16:45
want to shake on it why not I don't want 16:48
to 16:51
[Music] 16:56
Morgan have you seen Alice or 17:00
anyone yeah yeah I'm fine I'm just tired 17:03
just a series of [ __ ] lessons today had 17:06
a massive Ry earlier Shaz where's 17:09
Alice 17:14
Alice I was doing some drama work and 17:16
then he was like come Tony if you if 17:18
you're not going to get into bit schol 17:20
if you're not going to do that of 17:21
everyone yeah that was a good point they 17:23
wouldn't have it at a drama school if 17:24
you got up to perform and you just like 17:26
gigling and being silly they wouldn't 17:28
have it I said you're going to need to 17:30
apologize to me and she eventually did I 17:32
think I dealt with it quite well cuz we 17:34
all make mistakes and that's that you 17:36
know she needs to learn she can't act 17:37
like that in the 17:39
class any where are you I'm just down on 17:51
the 17:53
street now don't it's mid morning 17:55
and there's been a serious incident in 17:59
school G has sent semi naked photos of 18:01
her Selter student and aa's put Faceook 18:04
CH did you see it no I haven't se how 18:07
they've described it yeah face boes if 18:09
you were a beatress you might use the 18:13
term Cold Blood hello Miss hello sir can 18:14
I take Acacia please 18:18
Acacia Miss wants to speak to 18:21
you head teacher Miss Smith has called 18:24
year n ACAA to her 18:27
office she's been accused of posting a 18:29
semi- naked photo of another girl on 18:31
Facebook I'm going to ask you a direct 18:34
question and I want an honest response 18:36
okay did you put a picture on Facebook 18:39
yesterday why because she used to be 18:43
rude to me and she used to call me stuff 18:46
and I didn't like her where did you get 18:49
the picture from from Facebook then you 18:50
made the decision to put it on your 18:53
Facebook yeah and then I deleted it 18:55
straight away cuz I felt bad 18:57
can you know what you've done is a 18:59
criminal 19:01
act I didn't know that it's against the 19:02
law to distribute pictures of naked 19:05
young 19:09
people okay and that's really really 19:12
serious if that was an adult who had 19:17
done it they would be looking at going 19:19
to 19:22
prison you have to have a tough life onl 19:26
on social media because they have to be 19:29
exposed to the dangers that they're 19:30
placing themselves in things can get 19:33
around to thousands and thousands of 19:36
people in seconds okay yourself down 19:37
it's the only thing we can do to make 19:42
them learn and not make that 19:43
mistake as punishment Acacia will be 19:46
temporarily excluded from school for up 19:49
to 3 19:51
days 19:53
cred 19:55
cred me 19:56
Miss Smith will also deal with the 20:02
students that initially uploaded the 20:04
photograph Acacia is sent to miss 20:06
Hillman to discuss her exclusion I've 20:08
loaded it for like 3 minutes and like 60 20:11
odd people has already seen it and liked 20:14
it and then I was just like oh my gosh 20:18
cuz on Facebook I have like over a 20:20
thousand people on it you've got a 20:22
thousand friends on 20:24
Facebook how many of those people do you 20:26
consider to be your friends proper 20:30
friends true 20:33
friends 20:37
like 20:40
six now listen I've spoken to Miss Smith 20:44
and Miss Smith wants you out of school 20:47
for a day tomorrow tomorrow as an 20:48
exclusion and I think that's the right 20:51
decision if I get excluded tomorrow I I 20:55
don't live with my mom you don't you're 20:58
not living with mom who you living with 21:00
I live with my aunt right my mom's 21:01
really sick right okay so where's Mom at 21:04
the I know she's ill but where is she at 21:08
the moment in Haro in hospital or yeah 21:09
right 21:13
okay okay I I understand that it's 21:19
that's a horrible and difficult 21:24
situation to be in but we have to make a 21:25
phone call to to your carer 21:28
okay aaa's mom has a chronic condition 21:31
that affects her digestive system she's 21:34
been in hospital for the last 10 weeks 21:37
after undergoing emergency surgery she's 21:40
been poorly for like I think 7 years now 21:42
the surgery didn't go too great so my 21:47
mom's even worse than 21:50
before like things were kind of sad but 21:53
I just go to school 21:57
and then um I try not to think about 21:59
it due to aaa's home situation Miss hman 22:03
decides that she can serve her 22:07
punishment in the school intervention 22:09
[Music] 22:11
room mer um how's your lesson 22:24
[Music] 22:28
uh I'm having a nervous 22:33
breakdown guys guys in all seriousness I 22:38
am having a nervous breakdown you're 22:40
bring it on it's Friday and Mr bisam has 22:41
two weeks until Miss Smith observes his 22:44
lesson beatric was a perfect example of 22:46
a backwards of a backwards tah woman AA 22:49
is back in class and since falling out 22:52
with Mr bisam over her Brit School 22:55
audition T's Behavior has been 22:57
deteriorating stop it people trying to 22:59
focus ah you're moving the table what 23:02
who are you to putting your hand up in 23:06
my 23:07
face don't put check on my name cuz this 23:08
girl is pissing me off Tony leave 23:11
please I think I imagined teaching being 23:14
difficult I don't think I ever really 23:18
imagined the type of difficulty that 23:20
would be involved 23:23
Tony I am going to have to put you into 23:25
the departmental parking what I have a 23:28
detention after school and you'll have a 23:30
detention for God's sake yeah but the 23:32
fact you get three warning everyone 23:35
swears I can't talk to the back of your 23:37
head ask one more time please turn 23:41
around in the weaker moments I think can 23:46
I do 23:50
this if you're not achieving it's it's 23:53
hard to take 23:56
[Music] 23:57
I've seriously thought about leaving 24:11
teaching all 24:13
together I I'm starting a normal 24:15
job just all exhausting is it oh gosh I 24:20
know I don't know how you do this such 24:24
on per on 24:26
you mean years and years 24:28
[Music] 24:29
yeah and I know you guys do it and it 24:31
may be that man up but it takes so much 24:33
energy out of me I'm sleep on the sofa 24:36
most Night by 9: just life they passed 24:39
out like I've got no life it does get it 24:41
does get 24:45
easier yeah 24:46
[Music] 24:53
you're right Tony yeah some said you're 25:06
having a bad day yeah what are you upset 25:08
about didn't get in the bit school oh B 25:14
when did you find out Saturday oh I know 25:17
you had your heart set in it didn't you 25:21
what about Alice is she she she did oh 25:23
God that makes it work 25:27
oh I'm so 25:31
sorry oh babe well listen deep breaths 25:33
and you know sometimes these things make 25:36
us stronger resilience yeah yeah all 25:38
right it was just one A4 piece of paper 25:43
I didn't read it all I just looked down 25:47
to look for like you know them words 25:48
unfortunately or something that that and 25:51
then I saw that and I just knew that I 25:53
didn't get in me and my mom kept 25:54
thinking that 25:57
maybe they've sent the wrong letter or 25:58
something but I don't think that's 26:00
happen I'm leaving here I'm going no 26:03
you're not leaving here yeah I am I got 26:05
into the bridge when I found out that 26:07
Alice got in it hit me more she was like 26:10
have you got your letter from the bricks 26:14
and I was like not yet because I was 26:15
just a bit 26:17
embarrassed if I do get a second chance 26:19
I'll know if I've got in or not because 26:21
if you've got in then you've got a 26:23
bigger envelope and if you haven't then 26:25
youve just got a little one okay when I 26:27
leave you can sign my T I'm going to the 26:31
Bri School s I'm excited like I just 26:34
want to start now at me it's quite hard 26:37
because I want to talk about it all the 26:42
time CU I'm excited but then I don't 26:44
want her to feel like I'm showing off or 26:45
anything I don't know like I feel really 26:48
sorry for her 26:52
[Music] 26:55
I'm not touching the 27:02
walls I'm talking now it's Tuesday 27:06
morning Mr bisam has just over a week 27:09
until his observation with Miss Smith 27:12
and he's bringing a new discipline to 27:15
the classroom last lesson you had one of 27:16
the worst lessons you'd had as a group 27:19
this year summer sorry sir I'm still 27:21
talking today you are going to be 27:24
working independently you're not going 27:26
to be talking you going to experience 27:28
what the alternative is like SK I don't 27:30
want your opinions why are people 27:32
talking I want this year nine pass to 27:35
demonstrate that people learn better 27:39
when it's more fun and more interactive 27:43
but you've got to behave in a way that 27:45
allows that to happen otherwise people 27:47
will tell me that it's 27:48
not is everyone clear on 27:51
that are we all clear on that yes 27:55
good it was the worst worst of English 28:01
never 28:04
again I said follow 28:05
instructions he didn't even want to talk 28:08
to any of us yeah it was so grumpy it 28:10
was just so unbelievable like this this 28:12
one and then everyone was just talking 28:15
about oh it might be family problems or 28:16
something like that I'll write the 28:18
connective I'm going to use or the 28:19
sentence St I'm going to use that's 28:20
comparative so I'll use similarly or 28:23
further more I think it affects the 28:26
learning cuz if it's something's 28:28
boring no one's going to want to do it 28:29
now you can all pack 28:33
[Music] 28:34
up final talk this evening are about to 28:38
start in mi 28:42
and let me go the other way that's I 28:44
think yeah cuz I need your support 28:47
that's it's options night for year 28:49
nine and a chance for all students and 28:51
parents to discuss what subjects they 28:54
want to take for gcses 28:56
acacia's mom has been released from 28:58
hospital to attend the hospital gave me 29:00
such aggravation to come you know that's 29:03
cuz they're always making a fuss about 29:05
how you're trying to escape they tried 29:07
to say to me I couldn't go with the 29:09
morphine no she said it starts in 10 29:14
minutes so we wait let's go over 29:16
here my mom wants me to do really good 29:20
in school go College go 29:22
University and then be success uccessful 29:25
and make her 29:28
rich no crazy Wheeling me off the 29:30
balcony this is traveling in style 29:34
honey are you down for drama huh you're 29:38
down for drama aren't you drama helps 29:41
you interact it helps you with 29:44
interviews it helps you get along with 29:48
like team members that's right what 29:51
level do you think she's at I don't want 29:53
Miracles I just want solid we're 29:55
Miracles AR 29:58
we she can't do things that normal 30:02
parents can do that love the 30:05
daughter thank you they're all lovely 30:09
when they're in the 30:12
mood I remember before when she was um 30:19
like just normal she we used to go out 30:23
all the time have parties 30:25
she was so happy and like fun and 30:28
stuff but now she can't do any of 30:32
that and it's sad because my little 30:36
brother he's 30:38
seven and he doesn't really know how my 30:41
mom was before cuz I'm not interested in 30:45
where we are in performance tables 30:48
that's not my motivator my motiv every 30:50
single one of you 30:53
[Music] 30:57
[Music] 31:06
it's the next day and Miss Hillman wants 31:18
to make sure that ACAA is coping now 31:20
that her mom has returned to hospital 31:23
last week I went to see my mom every day 31:25
and you're managing yeah and you eating 31:29
properly while all this is going on yeah 31:31
cuz on the way back we go and get 31:33
something healthy food or McDonald's 31:35
food um some sometimes McDonald's right 31:37
when's the homework happening okay the 31:41
homework is a bit of a problem but I'm 31:43
going to wake up earlier to come to 31:46
school and only 24 hours in a day is 31:48
there any point in this when you're 31:51
going to fall 31:53
apart I don't really fall apart like 31:54
that if you you feel you need somebody 31:56
will you promise me that you'll tell me 31:58
yeah I think particularly for children 32:01
like AAA when life is is crazy there's 32:03
so much going on whatever the situation 32:06
might be school is a great 32:08
normalizer you know you walk through the 32:11
gates of this school and it's normal the 32:13
bells are still going the lessons are 32:15
still going on you're still going to get 32:17
shouted at if you're late we will be 32:19
here doing the same thing providing that 32:21
education and I think that's really 32:23
important for ACAA 32:26
promise you'll let me know yeah all 32:29
right and I hope the weekend goes really 32:30
well and it's a really nice Mother's Day 32:31
thanks well love okay thank 32:33
you right 32:36
rabble I'm not rabble it means not 32:39
Scrabble but if it was Scrabble I would 32:42
beat you out and out I'm a Scrabble 32:45
Champion oh I 32:47
[Music] 32:48
would it's a big day day for Mr 32:56
bisam he has an observation of his year 32:59
n English class with head teacher Miss 33:01
Smith and assistant head Miss 33:03
Higgins I can't remember where them said 33:06
I haven't got seting plan I changed it 33:08
not that long ago just because they're 33:10
annoying me and I don't remember where 33:12
they 33:14
sit it's terrifying they've trusted you 33:15
in their school and they've believed in 33:18
you and this is your chance to prove 33:21
you're doing it right guys can we line 33:24
up quietly please 33:26
the results of this observation will 33:29
count towards the final assessment of 33:30
his 2-year placement there poit 33:32
notes there's posting notes with your 33:35
name on the seat you going to be sitting 33:38
sorry about the Mis okay you take a seat 33:39
where the posting note with your name on 33:42
on it 33:43
please I will imagine that Mr bisam was 33:45
very nervous about his 33:48
observation he's not been teaching for 33:50
very long and he's got the head teacher 33:52
and M Higgins who is probably the most 33:55
awesome teacher in the school coming in 33:58
to observe his lesson and I'd be quite 34:00
scared of Miss Higgins coming in to 34:03
watch my 34:05
lesson can I explore what makes 34:06
successful persuasive writing that's 34:08
what we're really looking at we're going 34:10
to get the ball involved now oo exciting 34:11
um I am going to pass the ball to 34:15
someone and they're going to tell me a 34:17
persuasive technique oh you're an idiot 34:18
D purpose careful Tam um emotive 34:21
language emotive language do you know 34:24
what can you remember what that is I 34:26
feel that for him nervous but then I 34:27
know he's going to do a cake so it 34:31
doesn't work for you no but can you see 34:33
how that might work for other readers 34:35
yeah the whole class want to like put um 34:37
effort into it and make him proud 34:39
because he's putting all this effort in 34:42
for us to get our levels up so he 34:43
deserves that back do you find this 34:46
helpful 34:47
yeah I like that a lot we want other 34:49
teachers to see that he's a good teacher 34:51
cuz he is a good teacher it's just 34:54
I don't know thank you in a way doesn't 34:59
grab your attention in a way of finding 35:02
out someone's only got one lung it's 35:03
it's going to make you directly think 35:06
about that effect of smoking isn't it 35:07
smelling isn't that bad compared to it 35:10
costing you money compared to being 35:12
killed anecdotes so you shouldn't smoke 35:14
I've got to make day if who got cancer 35:17
that is an example of an 35:19
anecdote you want to step 35:21
outside about 35:26
okaya take a deep 35:35
breath come 35:39
on what's making you so upset cuz I 35:42
don't like seeing you like this my mom 35:44
is 35:47
dying I just was just thinking about it 35:50
you were thinking about it during the 35:53
lesson yeah 35:54
yeah always cry but I don't cry in front 35:56
of people do you want to go and talk to 36:00
someone cuz I'm not going to let you 36:03
just stay being upset all 36:05
day the bathroom you know we're all here 36:07
to support you 36:11
yeah okay go and get yourself sorted out 36:13
can use those 36:16
[Music] 36:17
toilets just come over a bit upset about 36:20
her mom so she's just going to wash her 36:23
face but she she's going to come back in 36:24
again about that 36:26
oh yeah um of course yeah I don't know 36:28
why this would have she just said 36:31
content there's some stuff can there oh 36:33
okay which I didn't think about 36:36
okay right I there um she says she's all 36:38
right to come back in she's just got to 36:41
go and sort St out okay I'll I'll be in 36:42
a minute then is that right yeah 36:44
absolutely of course um we're going to 36:45
go yeah thank you you're right H come 36:47
here you're right to go back in do you 36:51
want to go and speak to anyone today are 36:54
you sure 36:56
[Music] 36:57
I didn't think she looked right when she 37:03
came in whole thing 37:04
knowa speak outside you just want to sit 37:12
here let me leave you 37:15
alone 37:17
okay close your Burks get I'll collect 37:20
them in a who's going to collect them 37:23
who's going to collect them who is going 37:24
to collect actually just you can put 37:26
them in the box as you 37:28
[Music] 37:35
leave it's the day after Mr bis fam's 37:41
observation and he's coming early to get 37:44
feedback from Miss 37:46
[Music] 37:47
Smith acacia's breakdown in class is 37:49
still on his mind ACAA is a really sweet 37:52
girl who is dealing with some horrible 37:56
situations I never came to this job to 37:59
upset people you really don't want 38:01
people feeding like that in your 38:04
class good morning sir morning you want 38:09
shut the 38:12
door okay you ready okay so first of all 38:13
be helpful if you could just go through 38:18
what you think went well yeah and if 38:20
with that magical benefit of hindsight 38:22
what you would do differently if you had 38:25
to do it again 38:26
obviously with 38:28
aosa 38:29
um that was a little bit thoughtless 38:31
having something like that and then 38:33
knowing her situation and knowing how 38:35
that could affect her 38:37
um yeah okay so we're going to go 38:39
through a few bits of feedback I mean 38:42
the first thing to remember in terms of 38:44
an observation is you've only been 38:46
teaching for 18 months without any 38:48
training whatsoever what I think to work 38:51
on is things like shouting out and 38:54
making sure you do insist on Standard 38:57
English correct so somebody said and I 39:00
think it was Jessica at one point oh 39:02
it's bear long man as an English teacher 39:04
particularly you need address absolutely 39:07
should be you need to address that yeah 39:09
um however we wouldn't have known that 39:11
you're a second year teach first at 39:14
looking at that lesson no thank you okay 39:15
you know they're not easy kids you've 39:19
got some very you know girls who can be 39:21
very challenging however it's quite 39:23
evident that they've made quite a lot of 39:26
progress as a result of the teaching 39:28
that they've received one of the 39:30
questions I asked them was um do you 39:31
like English all of them said yes 18 39:33
months in I think that's pry 39:36
good thank you where we would judge that 39:38
lesson as being well we would judge that 39:42
lesson as being a good lesson across the 39:44
three strands okay um which for where 39:46
you are at the moment is is phenomenal I 39:50
am really excited about the potential 39:54
that you're showing in the classroom 39:57
thanks guys than much um I'll see you 39:59
later thanks guys that's 40:01
[Music] 40:07
brilliant good morning 40:14
mam 40:19
morning good across the 40:22
board excellent 40:24
[Music] 40:27
I got got my feedback good across the 40:29
board excellent well done cheers all 40:33
right got my 40:38
feedback got 40:40
good Joe is a very very reflective 40:43
teacher and will probably overthink what 40:46
happened with Acacia I think it doesn't 40:49
matter how hard you try there is always 40:52
going to be something that you might do 40:54
in a lesson which will trigger something 40:56
in a 40:58
Pew but the most important thing is we 40:59
have the support in place ready to help 41:01
kids when they need 41:04
[Music] 41:05
it it's break 41:12
time ni do you have them 41:14
Fred ACAA and home support worker Miss 41:17
Austin are waiting to see Miss Hillman 41:20
Miss Smith is a little concerned about 41:23
you she said you were really upset you 41:25
know I think it's really important that 41:27
someone in school is is a kind of person 41:29
even if it's mostly about the academic 41:33
stuff or allowing you the opportunity to 41:35
use a phone to ring your mom if you need 41:37
to and I think Miss Austin's the best 41:39
person to do that so how do you feel 41:41
about that you wouldn't say you dare say 41:42
no in front of me her feelings you like 41:45
her yeah she's all right she's okay do 41:47
she's made it clear at the moment she 41:51
doesn't want that counselor relationship 41:52
where someone really gets in under the 41:55
surface so let's park that and let's 41:56
tackle your homework let's tackle your 41:58
progress in lessons where's your planner 41:59
I have yeah things like things like 42:02
things like the planner that everyday 42:04
dialogue and those great relationships 42:06
between staff and students happen all 42:08
the time and I think that's what makes 42:10
the fabric of of this 42:11
school the little pet talks I think they 42:13
are absolutely you know crucial to to 42:16
building the resilient bright 42:19
aspirational kids that leave our school 42:22
Tony can I speak to yourself and you're 42:24
not in trouble 42:26
um I heard about your news from the 42:31
brial I'm really disappointed for you 42:34
but I'm also really glad cuz I enjoy 42:37
having you in class plenty of people 42:38
have been successful that didn't go to 42:40
the Brit school toury yeah I know yeah 42:41
so don't get too down on it and keep 42:43
working hard at school cuz it's still 42:44
important all right yeah all right right 42:46
okay thanks I'm not going to stop my 42:48
drama I'm going to try and do shows and 42:50
that try and get noticed but 42:53
obviously if if I ain't getting nowhere 42:55
then I've got my backup plan to do 42:58
hairdressing year nine end of year GCSE 43:01
style exam we're going to make our work 43:04
better than everyone else in the school 43:06
yeah Connor's like yeah of course we are 43:10
I think they are beginning to see that I 43:12
am really doing all the stuff for them 43:13
Nathan you can go Brian you can go 43:17
Ibraham you can go Rabel you can go AA 43:19
you can go Tony you can go you know it's 43:20
not a battle anymore it's it's turning 43:23
into a partnership which is 43:25
exciting now I got to cut loose for 43:27
loose kick off your Sunday shoes there's 43:31
been some real lows that have really 43:35
made me 43:36
consider is this what I want to 43:38
do but the idea of moving away from 43:43
these kids and this school 43:45
now it just feels all 43:49
wrong 43:52
loose loose 43:54
my 43:58
[Music] 44:03
bore please stop singing 44:08
please do you really feel this way about 44:12
him you must not allow such a Time 44:15
waster to brainwash you love cannot 44:17
exist I'm thankful for my cold blood 44:19
because I shall not experience such pain 44:22
you okay 44:25
[Music] 44:29
oh hero oh hero how many times must I 44:30
warn you before you bother to marry oh 44:33
hero but but I love 44:35
him all written by Cas by the way thank 44:39
you very much 44:42
[Music] 44:46
oh 44:57
[Applause] 45:03
[Music] 45:05

[Music]
hoe oh new

bremma School 18 months ago it's her
first job as a head
teacher why I wanted to be a head
teacher why would you want to be a head
teacher it's a mad mad mad job right
what shoes should I wear
today when I started here there was an
awful lot of work to do the results were
nowhere near good enough nowhere near
what these kids are capable of achieving
but the
opportunity to shape of school is a
really exciting
one too depressing
[Music]
more like
[Music]
[Applause]
him good morning good morning good
morning let Get your coats off cut off
please I am proud of the school cuz
schools aren't just about getting exam
results it's about creating happy
successful and resilient young people
who have got the skills to go and do
battle in that tough old world out there
good morning I'm going to countdown and
then I'm locking the gates in her
mission to improve the school Miss Smith
is backed up by a team of over a 100
staff I need T your shirt in you look a
mess you're not in uniform on Monday we
going to put in the exclusion room
including Mr Palumbo sir I'll will have
my blazer on Monday I just don't have it
today you see that he raised his fist at
me assistant head you're the last person
in if you keep running Miss Hillman
faster than that to cut out the
cigarettes mate Deputy head
and one of her latest recruits Mr bisf
hey n n who's new to teaching gentlemen
come in Miss Smith took him on 18 months
ago as part of a learn on the job
training placement when I first met Mr
bisam I was really impressed by his
passion let's look ready let's get let's
get going got gr on ready to learn but
he was quite intimidated by what was
ahead of him because I thought of
suddenly being in front 30 year NES is a
big old
ask fight the power how would you
describe your style um 50% stand up and
50% motivational speeches wakey wakey I
want them to sort of dance in and ready
to learn and you know Mr bisf fam you're
amazing okay right right listen up we
are now into our third week of much to
do about nothing we've watched it we've
had a look a bit of context Joseph that
is my name you actually look like one so
you Jewish no I'm not Jewish okay you
look Turkish he actually
doesn't he doesn't look turkey he does
look like Turkish he looks maian no no
no maian what is it cyprian he looks
like um cisum whatever it's called right
cypria um I'm not any of those things uh
right year nine my biggest challenge is
that year nine
class the year nine girls are a um a
force of nature what are you doing
hiding from Tiana shazar Tiana
AAA and S yeah this is taking too long I
don't know but I think without us then
like the class would be a bit boring Kaa
what girls it's only
B I know it's only bant but this is not
the time for bant sorry this is the time
for
worker how would the kid describe you De
Record um I think that's a really good
question he looks like a little teddy
bear with BD head and with a little bit
it's quite funny when he loses his
temper he gets really frustrated and he
goes he's stresses his lips like go all
in and like even the little even his Bal
bit goes bright red everything is so
funny I think you can tell the teachers
name yeah only because they're like
jumpy I I wouldn't want to be a new
teacher how does Shak SP trade attitudes
to women act
141 yeah n yeah n yeah n yeah n yeah
N I would challenge anyone to stand in
front of those girls and not be a little
bit daunted I think his best dress he's
always flustering around in the clock
shut
up so that's
rude Tony is one of Mr bisf fam's most
vocal year
[Music]
NES
don't T's always singing when it goes
quiet in class you can just hear doed
tones of
Tony it's quite sweet
[Music]
really at the end of year N9 Tony hopes
to leave Frederick bremma she's recently
auditioned for the Performing Arts Brit
School in South London can we do the
work please oh you're such a good girl I
want to go to the B school hopefully go
University or hopefully before all that
get as my mom says gets get noticed in
the crowd what does it mean I don't know
it sounds good though doesn't it
fantastic I want to be a artist singer
or an actress or possibly both I
wouldn't mind being in these senders I
could be Bianca's long lost sister or
something yes I don't want to no you're
not you can't miss heal my Mona come I
don't know is there anything you're not
supposed to have in earrings got M since
she's auditioned for the Brit School T's
desire to stand out from the crowd has
caught the eye of Deputy head Miss
Hillman no you're not allowed no peons
at all stay there and Miss see you in a
minute all
right I don't see what's the point of
not having no peons because it's not
going to affect no learning at the end
of the
day right so you need to comply with the
school rules and you need to take the
piercing out and if you get into the
Brit school and I really hope that you
do then that's fantastic but at the
moment you're at Frederick brema you see
it's an interesting one about your
reference to the britz gone as well
because if I was writing reference I
would have so many glowing things to say
about you but I would say at the bottom
sometimes Tony finds it difficult to
follow School procedures CU I would have
no option other than to do that so I
want to make sure that you are
absolutely crystal clear what this will
mean if you don't take it out yeah sure
yeah okay and how did the interview go
um yeah it was all right my nun was like
she's a determined girl did she go with
you your n yeah you are a very
determined girl and that's why we're in
this situation at the moment because you
are a determined girl but that
determination about the wrong things
will not lead to Greatness at all all
right
[Music]
bye-bye right good morning is it worth
saying anything about piercing um well
I'm on a bit of a piercing Mish cuz I'm
wondering whether it's worth saying to
staff that the only piercing aloud is in
single in the ear I'm so anal about but
they what the year n I'm ad about my
P Nigel don't go
[Music]
there I would like you to imagine you
are hero I would it's mid morning and Mr
bisam has his year n class yeah what
would you say as a modern person he
joined frit Bremer 18 months ago through
the teach first scheme after leaving a
career in politics I became increasingly
disaffected with the political sphere I
mean it's quite self- serving and not
really making a difference which is what
I wanted to do I want you to write your
own response to claudo if you got called
a a rotten orange and a one which means
a prostitute this term he's trying to
engage his year NES in Shakespeare
teaching Shakespeare is a challenge
they just don't see how it's relevant to
them they don't understand its power
they're just like what but if you bring
it alive they'll learn and I really
fundamentally believe that so I can't
wait to perform this yes so can I I
would like everyone to stand up yes I
want you all to direct the most angry
response that you can when I say the
lines give not this rotten orange to
your friend
side and
S go what that me
got are you mad
no so don't come in and talk any rubbish
to me in my face yet idiotic boy I'll
stab you in your penis me
one having me as a wife in
it guys guys what are you doing what are
you
doing why you see for
can everyone get to their seats please
stop it okay back to your seats
three
two
one when it goes wrong and especially
when it goes spectacularly wrong me your
heart plummet you've worked on this
lesson you've wanted it to be good
you're also concerned about the progress
that these kids are showing and then it
falls to part every time I turn my back
something was happening that was quite
frankly dangerous I'm waiting for a
second so I think the people are ready
to listen well I think we're all ready
to listen I don't at the moment On's not
ready to listen we are ready to listen
when I first started teaching it feels
like a million years ago it wasn't
actually that long ago yeah it was hard
because I came in with an absolute
idealism of why I wanted to do the job
and actually what you realize very
quickly is it's really hard to balance
the idea with the difficulties of
dealing with a group of adolescents it's
really actually bloody hard this
job I don't want to be a ordinary
teacher I don't want to be coming in to
get a paycheck rolling out a lesson I've
done before that's going to get them
past their exams but not going to
inspire any
interest but there's so much I find
really challenging about the
[Music]
job see you later Mr bitam how are you
I'm good thank you how are you I'm fine
um I don't know how you feel about this
that I need to come and do a lesson
observation yeah fine particularly
interest in your year n class yeah um
that would be that' be good yeah yeah
definitely yeah no no that's absolutely
fun um brilliant
[Music]
it's Monday
lunchtime and practice for Tony and the
rest of the school
[Music]
choir everyone
your like
professionals T is still waiting to hear
if she's got into the Brit school but
she's not the only one that's
auditioning her best friend Alice is
also competing for
[Music]
Place well we've known each other all
our lives because we we live next to
each other so we always used to shout
out each other she used to jum jum nice
to clam my fence give her a day look I
like having my hair and face done but
I'm not going to lose weight because
somebody tells me to I make music to be
a musician not to be on the cover of
Playboy it's fantastic she's good at
singing
acting and she's good at dancing Miss
I've got an audition tomorrow so I'm not
in school what's your audition for the
the
Brit you'll break my heart if you
leave don't tell no one now no one
supposed to know if she got in and I
didn't I'd be really upset and I keep
thinking about it and and it's
just it makes my heart pump a lot
because it gets me scared yeah
bye see you not everyone knows about the
B school is that if I don't get in then
I have to go through people winding me
up about it so it's best if no one knows
about
it the answer is
dreams I had a lot of Dreams everyone
stand up I like stand up in four weeks
Mr bisam has an observation of his year
n class with head teacher Miss Smith
this term he's using roleplay to engage
them in Shakespeare one of you is
Benedict and the other is beatric I
would like you to practice how you think
these lies should be said to each other
off you go but keep your way I got name
I think Tony has got a lot of talents
you know she's quite an actress projects
her voice very well to be honest with
you always at the right time move
man you have to have key characters come
with you and if you've got them they
will take the whole class with them so
if I can get her on side you know I am
happy and confident we're going to have
a great lesson who would like to have a
go and showing people how they think it
should be read Tony up you go
okay Tiana Tiana face turn Face line 104
I'm gonna start laughing Tony you want
to right Tony sorry they wouldn't have
this at the brid school would they now
[Music]
what did he so why are you saying
that because you said to me you you
wanted you that's what you said to us at
the beginning the year why you B it oh
my God I don't want to do it don't worry
some people didn't hear no I don't care
that's pissed me off I don't even know
what he said
stop well to me it is this is no one
knows about him what he say nothing I'm
not going to carry on what he said why
going to ba out what he said if you
didn't hear then he [ __ ] didn't
hear off everyone sit down everyone sit
[Music]
down right okay toita Leila Andre zah
Tay Rabel leave them on the front
someone will collect them in a second
[Music]
Tony yeah look at me I don't want to why
are you angry at me because no one knows
that I've auditioned for the Brit school
cuz if I didn't know You' audition for
The Brit school so how did you know
because I was I was referring to the
fact that remember at the beginning of
the year you were talking about how you
really really wanted to go to the Brit
school now I was just trying to
encourage you to do some drama if I'd
known of course I wouldn't have brought
it up do you accept my apology yes you
can't swear at people Tony
right you're being quite rude now
nothing but calmly sorry p i I would
like it to be a proper apology not you
looking your bag tning I'd like you
to sorry sir okay I really really
appreciate that apology and you accept
mine yeah shake shake on it you don't
want to shake on it why not I don't want
to
[Music]
Morgan have you seen Alice or
anyone yeah yeah I'm fine I'm just tired
just a series of [ __ ] lessons today had
a massive Ry earlier Shaz where's
Alice
Alice I was doing some drama work and
then he was like come Tony if you if
you're not going to get into bit schol
if you're not going to do that of
everyone yeah that was a good point they
wouldn't have it at a drama school if
you got up to perform and you just like
gigling and being silly they wouldn't
have it I said you're going to need to
apologize to me and she eventually did I
think I dealt with it quite well cuz we
all make mistakes and that's that you
know she needs to learn she can't act
like that in the
class any where are you I'm just down on
the
street now don't it's mid morning
and there's been a serious incident in
school G has sent semi naked photos of
her Selter student and aa's put Faceook
CH did you see it no I haven't se how
they've described it yeah face boes if
you were a beatress you might use the
term Cold Blood hello Miss hello sir can
I take Acacia please
Acacia Miss wants to speak to
you head teacher Miss Smith has called
year n ACAA to her
office she's been accused of posting a
semi- naked photo of another girl on
Facebook I'm going to ask you a direct
question and I want an honest response
okay did you put a picture on Facebook
yesterday why because she used to be
rude to me and she used to call me stuff
and I didn't like her where did you get
the picture from from Facebook then you
made the decision to put it on your
Facebook yeah and then I deleted it
straight away cuz I felt bad
can you know what you've done is a
criminal
act I didn't know that it's against the
law to distribute pictures of naked
young
people okay and that's really really
serious if that was an adult who had
done it they would be looking at going
to
prison you have to have a tough life onl
on social media because they have to be
exposed to the dangers that they're
placing themselves in things can get
around to thousands and thousands of
people in seconds okay yourself down
it's the only thing we can do to make
them learn and not make that
mistake as punishment Acacia will be
temporarily excluded from school for up
to 3
days
cred
cred me
Miss Smith will also deal with the
students that initially uploaded the
photograph Acacia is sent to miss
Hillman to discuss her exclusion I've
loaded it for like 3 minutes and like 60
odd people has already seen it and liked
it and then I was just like oh my gosh
cuz on Facebook I have like over a
thousand people on it you've got a
thousand friends on
Facebook how many of those people do you
consider to be your friends proper
friends true
friends
like
six now listen I've spoken to Miss Smith
and Miss Smith wants you out of school
for a day tomorrow tomorrow as an
exclusion and I think that's the right
decision if I get excluded tomorrow I I
don't live with my mom you don't you're
not living with mom who you living with
I live with my aunt right my mom's
really sick right okay so where's Mom at
the I know she's ill but where is she at
the moment in Haro in hospital or yeah
right
okay okay I I understand that it's
that's a horrible and difficult
situation to be in but we have to make a
phone call to to your carer
okay aaa's mom has a chronic condition
that affects her digestive system she's
been in hospital for the last 10 weeks
after undergoing emergency surgery she's
been poorly for like I think 7 years now
the surgery didn't go too great so my
mom's even worse than
before like things were kind of sad but
I just go to school
and then um I try not to think about
it due to aaa's home situation Miss hman
decides that she can serve her
punishment in the school intervention
[Music]
room mer um how's your lesson
[Music]
uh I'm having a nervous
breakdown guys guys in all seriousness I
am having a nervous breakdown you're
bring it on it's Friday and Mr bisam has
two weeks until Miss Smith observes his
lesson beatric was a perfect example of
a backwards of a backwards tah woman AA
is back in class and since falling out
with Mr bisam over her Brit School
audition T's Behavior has been
deteriorating stop it people trying to
focus ah you're moving the table what
who are you to putting your hand up in
my
face don't put check on my name cuz this
girl is pissing me off Tony leave
please I think I imagined teaching being
difficult I don't think I ever really
imagined the type of difficulty that
would be involved
Tony I am going to have to put you into
the departmental parking what I have a
detention after school and you'll have a
detention for God's sake yeah but the
fact you get three warning everyone
swears I can't talk to the back of your
head ask one more time please turn
around in the weaker moments I think can
I do
this if you're not achieving it's it's
hard to take
[Music]
I've seriously thought about leaving
teaching all
together I I'm starting a normal
job just all exhausting is it oh gosh I
know I don't know how you do this such
on per on
you mean years and years
[Music]
yeah and I know you guys do it and it
may be that man up but it takes so much
energy out of me I'm sleep on the sofa
most Night by 9: just life they passed
out like I've got no life it does get it
does get
easier yeah
[Music]
you're right Tony yeah some said you're
having a bad day yeah what are you upset
about didn't get in the bit school oh B
when did you find out Saturday oh I know
you had your heart set in it didn't you
what about Alice is she she she did oh
God that makes it work
oh I'm so
sorry oh babe well listen deep breaths
and you know sometimes these things make
us stronger resilience yeah yeah all
right it was just one A4 piece of paper
I didn't read it all I just looked down
to look for like you know them words
unfortunately or something that that and
then I saw that and I just knew that I
didn't get in me and my mom kept
thinking that
maybe they've sent the wrong letter or
something but I don't think that's
happen I'm leaving here I'm going no
you're not leaving here yeah I am I got
into the bridge when I found out that
Alice got in it hit me more she was like
have you got your letter from the bricks
and I was like not yet because I was
just a bit
embarrassed if I do get a second chance
I'll know if I've got in or not because
if you've got in then you've got a
bigger envelope and if you haven't then
youve just got a little one okay when I
leave you can sign my T I'm going to the
Bri School s I'm excited like I just
want to start now at me it's quite hard
because I want to talk about it all the
time CU I'm excited but then I don't
want her to feel like I'm showing off or
anything I don't know like I feel really
sorry for her
[Music]
I'm not touching the
walls I'm talking now it's Tuesday
morning Mr bisam has just over a week
until his observation with Miss Smith
and he's bringing a new discipline to
the classroom last lesson you had one of
the worst lessons you'd had as a group
this year summer sorry sir I'm still
talking today you are going to be
working independently you're not going
to be talking you going to experience
what the alternative is like SK I don't
want your opinions why are people
talking I want this year nine pass to
demonstrate that people learn better
when it's more fun and more interactive
but you've got to behave in a way that
allows that to happen otherwise people
will tell me that it's
not is everyone clear on
that are we all clear on that yes
good it was the worst worst of English
never
again I said follow
instructions he didn't even want to talk
to any of us yeah it was so grumpy it
was just so unbelievable like this this
one and then everyone was just talking
about oh it might be family problems or
something like that I'll write the
connective I'm going to use or the
sentence St I'm going to use that's
comparative so I'll use similarly or
further more I think it affects the
learning cuz if it's something's
boring no one's going to want to do it
now you can all pack
[Music]
up final talk this evening are about to
start in mi
and let me go the other way that's I
think yeah cuz I need your support
that's it's options night for year
nine and a chance for all students and
parents to discuss what subjects they
want to take for gcses
acacia's mom has been released from
hospital to attend the hospital gave me
such aggravation to come you know that's
cuz they're always making a fuss about
how you're trying to escape they tried
to say to me I couldn't go with the
morphine no she said it starts in 10
minutes so we wait let's go over
here my mom wants me to do really good
in school go College go
University and then be success uccessful
and make her
rich no crazy Wheeling me off the
balcony this is traveling in style
honey are you down for drama huh you're
down for drama aren't you drama helps
you interact it helps you with
interviews it helps you get along with
like team members that's right what
level do you think she's at I don't want
Miracles I just want solid we're
Miracles AR
we she can't do things that normal
parents can do that love the
daughter thank you they're all lovely
when they're in the
mood I remember before when she was um
like just normal she we used to go out
all the time have parties
she was so happy and like fun and
stuff but now she can't do any of
that and it's sad because my little
brother he's
seven and he doesn't really know how my
mom was before cuz I'm not interested in
where we are in performance tables
that's not my motivator my motiv every
single one of you
[Music]
[Music]
it's the next day and Miss Hillman wants
to make sure that ACAA is coping now
that her mom has returned to hospital
last week I went to see my mom every day
and you're managing yeah and you eating
properly while all this is going on yeah
cuz on the way back we go and get
something healthy food or McDonald's
food um some sometimes McDonald's right
when's the homework happening okay the
homework is a bit of a problem but I'm
going to wake up earlier to come to
school and only 24 hours in a day is
there any point in this when you're
going to fall
apart I don't really fall apart like
that if you you feel you need somebody
will you promise me that you'll tell me
yeah I think particularly for children
like AAA when life is is crazy there's
so much going on whatever the situation
might be school is a great
normalizer you know you walk through the
gates of this school and it's normal the
bells are still going the lessons are
still going on you're still going to get
shouted at if you're late we will be
here doing the same thing providing that
education and I think that's really
important for ACAA
promise you'll let me know yeah all
right and I hope the weekend goes really
well and it's a really nice Mother's Day
thanks well love okay thank
you right
rabble I'm not rabble it means not
Scrabble but if it was Scrabble I would
beat you out and out I'm a Scrabble
Champion oh I
[Music]
would it's a big day day for Mr
bisam he has an observation of his year
n English class with head teacher Miss
Smith and assistant head Miss
Higgins I can't remember where them said
I haven't got seting plan I changed it
not that long ago just because they're
annoying me and I don't remember where
they
sit it's terrifying they've trusted you
in their school and they've believed in
you and this is your chance to prove
you're doing it right guys can we line
up quietly please
the results of this observation will
count towards the final assessment of
his 2-year placement there poit
notes there's posting notes with your
name on the seat you going to be sitting
sorry about the Mis okay you take a seat
where the posting note with your name on
on it
please I will imagine that Mr bisam was
very nervous about his
observation he's not been teaching for
very long and he's got the head teacher
and M Higgins who is probably the most
awesome teacher in the school coming in
to observe his lesson and I'd be quite
scared of Miss Higgins coming in to
watch my
lesson can I explore what makes
successful persuasive writing that's
what we're really looking at we're going
to get the ball involved now oo exciting
um I am going to pass the ball to
someone and they're going to tell me a
persuasive technique oh you're an idiot
D purpose careful Tam um emotive
language emotive language do you know
what can you remember what that is I
feel that for him nervous but then I
know he's going to do a cake so it
doesn't work for you no but can you see
how that might work for other readers
yeah the whole class want to like put um
effort into it and make him proud
because he's putting all this effort in
for us to get our levels up so he
deserves that back do you find this
helpful
yeah I like that a lot we want other
teachers to see that he's a good teacher
cuz he is a good teacher it's just
I don't know thank you in a way doesn't
grab your attention in a way of finding
out someone's only got one lung it's
it's going to make you directly think
about that effect of smoking isn't it
smelling isn't that bad compared to it
costing you money compared to being
killed anecdotes so you shouldn't smoke
I've got to make day if who got cancer
that is an example of an
anecdote you want to step
outside about
okaya take a deep
breath come
on what's making you so upset cuz I
don't like seeing you like this my mom
is
dying I just was just thinking about it
you were thinking about it during the
lesson yeah
yeah always cry but I don't cry in front
of people do you want to go and talk to
someone cuz I'm not going to let you
just stay being upset all
day the bathroom you know we're all here
to support you
yeah okay go and get yourself sorted out
can use those
[Music]
toilets just come over a bit upset about
her mom so she's just going to wash her
face but she she's going to come back in
again about that
oh yeah um of course yeah I don't know
why this would have she just said
content there's some stuff can there oh
okay which I didn't think about
okay right I there um she says she's all
right to come back in she's just got to
go and sort St out okay I'll I'll be in
a minute then is that right yeah
absolutely of course um we're going to
go yeah thank you you're right H come
here you're right to go back in do you
want to go and speak to anyone today are
you sure
[Music]
I didn't think she looked right when she
came in whole thing
knowa speak outside you just want to sit
here let me leave you
alone
okay close your Burks get I'll collect
them in a who's going to collect them
who's going to collect them who is going
to collect actually just you can put
them in the box as you
[Music]
leave it's the day after Mr bis fam's
observation and he's coming early to get
feedback from Miss
[Music]
Smith acacia's breakdown in class is
still on his mind ACAA is a really sweet
girl who is dealing with some horrible
situations I never came to this job to
upset people you really don't want
people feeding like that in your
class good morning sir morning you want
shut the
door okay you ready okay so first of all
be helpful if you could just go through
what you think went well yeah and if
with that magical benefit of hindsight
what you would do differently if you had
to do it again
obviously with
aosa
um that was a little bit thoughtless
having something like that and then
knowing her situation and knowing how
that could affect her
um yeah okay so we're going to go
through a few bits of feedback I mean
the first thing to remember in terms of
an observation is you've only been
teaching for 18 months without any
training whatsoever what I think to work
on is things like shouting out and
making sure you do insist on Standard
English correct so somebody said and I
think it was Jessica at one point oh
it's bear long man as an English teacher
particularly you need address absolutely
should be you need to address that yeah
um however we wouldn't have known that
you're a second year teach first at
looking at that lesson no thank you okay
you know they're not easy kids you've
got some very you know girls who can be
very challenging however it's quite
evident that they've made quite a lot of
progress as a result of the teaching
that they've received one of the
questions I asked them was um do you
like English all of them said yes 18
months in I think that's pry
good thank you where we would judge that
lesson as being well we would judge that
lesson as being a good lesson across the
three strands okay um which for where
you are at the moment is is phenomenal I
am really excited about the potential
that you're showing in the classroom
thanks guys than much um I'll see you
later thanks guys that's
[Music]
brilliant good morning
mam
morning good across the
board excellent
[Music]
I got got my feedback good across the
board excellent well done cheers all
right got my
feedback got
good Joe is a very very reflective
teacher and will probably overthink what
happened with Acacia I think it doesn't
matter how hard you try there is always
going to be something that you might do
in a lesson which will trigger something
in a
Pew but the most important thing is we
have the support in place ready to help
kids when they need
[Music]
it it's break
time ni do you have them
Fred ACAA and home support worker Miss
Austin are waiting to see Miss Hillman
Miss Smith is a little concerned about
you she said you were really upset you
know I think it's really important that
someone in school is is a kind of person
even if it's mostly about the academic
stuff or allowing you the opportunity to
use a phone to ring your mom if you need
to and I think Miss Austin's the best
person to do that so how do you feel
about that you wouldn't say you dare say
no in front of me her feelings you like
her yeah she's all right she's okay do
she's made it clear at the moment she
doesn't want that counselor relationship
where someone really gets in under the
surface so let's park that and let's
tackle your homework let's tackle your
progress in lessons where's your planner
I have yeah things like things like
things like the planner that everyday
dialogue and those great relationships
between staff and students happen all
the time and I think that's what makes
the fabric of of this
school the little pet talks I think they
are absolutely you know crucial to to
building the resilient bright
aspirational kids that leave our school
Tony can I speak to yourself and you're
not in trouble
um I heard about your news from the
brial I'm really disappointed for you
but I'm also really glad cuz I enjoy
having you in class plenty of people
have been successful that didn't go to
the Brit school toury yeah I know yeah
so don't get too down on it and keep
working hard at school cuz it's still
