it's estimated that up to 1 million 00:00
people live or work illegally in the UK 00:02
it's the job of enforcement teams to 00:05
track those people down and remove them 00:07
from 00:09
[Music] 00:10
Britain assistant immigration officer 00:12
Adele Partington is part of a team in 00:14
Glasgow preparing for a raid it's 00:17
currently 10 6 in the morning and we're 00:19
all just getting pitted up and ready to 00:23
go out and carry out the rest team visit 00:24
it's part of the job but you always 00:27
still get a little bit of of so it would 00:28
be normal if get any first visit is to 00:30
Flat 21 Target of the visit is a 00:34
Pakistani male the intelligence for this 00:38
visit suggests that Mr sha lives at the 00:41
Target address with 10 or 11 other 00:44
Pakistani males uh some of the occupants 00:47
allegedly have counterfeit documentation 00:50
the intention today is obviously to 00:52
search for and arrest Mr sha and any 00:54
other immigration offenders that we come 00:56
across okay thank 00:58
you well the target is to locate and 01:01
arrest the offender but for this package 01:03
although it's listed only one offender 01:06
there's a possibility of 10 or 11 other 01:08
people residing at the address we could 01:10
also be possible offenders as well so it 01:13
can be straightforward or they can be 01:16
complicated and until you actually get 01:18
through the door you don't you don't 01:20
know what you're going to find the flat 01:21
is not far from the team's base it's now 01:24
7: a.m. 01:27
can you open the door please imigration 01:36
police immigration police we've got a 01:43
warant to be here you take us through to 01:45
11 room please how many people are in 01:47
the premises you have a seat please it 01:49
appears the early visit is paid off the 01:51
occupants were still in bed okay so 01:54
what's your immigration stat I'm in 01:56
give a passport it's in my wallet inside 02:01
the okay we need access to that door and 02:06
that 02:09
door Pakistani identity card got keys 02:09
there are only two people in the flat 02:14
there are also two locked doors and no 02:16
keys right if you don't have keys we're 02:19
going to knock the door in anyway so 02:21
it's up to 02:22
yourself ah 02:28
the intelligence that there are 10 02:34
people living here seems to be wrong and 02:35
the two men they've just found are 02:38
both but the kitchen window of this 02:42
third floor flat is 02:45
open officers think someone has done the 02:47
unthinkable just had a jumper uh from 02:58
the flat and I reckon it's about 50 03:01
ft one of the occupants tried to climb 03:03
down the 03:06
drain he lost his 03:08
footing he's managed to struggle to the 03:10
dust bins at the rear of the 03:12
building did anybody else jump out uh 03:15
there one guys one guy where is he is he 03:19
hot no no no where is he other side 03:23
other side there 03:28
we're on trying to find El just now we 03:31
believe he's been over the fence here 03:33
into the green area so just having a 03:35
look to try and faint him just 03:38
now the other man must have kept his 03:39
grip when he climbed down and now he's 03:42
on the 03:44
run but his injured friend is losing 03:47
Consciousness you back my SP put your 03:49
back 03:52
yeah Ashley PE has been with the 03:53
immigration service for just over a year 03:55
okay this is a first Ser all right 03:59
better thank you 04:01
okay sah come on speak to me tries to 04:05
keep the man awake 04:08
help I know you're back so try and stay 04:15
calm okay try not to 04:18
move you're okay the paramedics quickly 04:21
decided to get the man to hpit rescue 04:25
boards they fear he has broken his back 04:28
from the impact of the 04:31
fall in hospital he's told his spine is 04:35
fractured when his immigration paperwork 04:38
is complete he'll be sent back to 04:40
Pakistan the runner remains at 04:44
large Terminal 3 at Heathrow is the main 04:48
entry point for travelers from the 04:51
Middle East America Asia and Africa 04:52
officers have stopped a passenger from 04:56
Johannesburg who's flown in on a tourist 04:58
visa but he doesn't have much money so 05:01
they suspect he may be here to work 05:03
South African gentleman mhm he's a a 05:05
very solidly built South African 05:08
gentleman okay put occupation I think as 05:09
bodyguard right while his Landing card 05:12
and he has apparently spent um the 05:14
recent months in South Africa doing a 05:16
bodyguard training course he may be 05:18
looking for that kind of work in the UK 05:21
okay however so far we've told us to 05:23
come to visit a cousin okay so that's 05:26
all we've got so far 05:28
immigration officer Lisa Lee 05:31
investigates pav is it Pavia pavier how 05:33
do you say your name sir Pavia would you 05:35
know you like to follow me I'm going to 05:37
be dealing with you initially today and 05:38
then a colleague of mine will be taking 05:40
over the case um how long is this going 05:42
to be as long as it takes her 05:44
unfortunately these things have a habit 05:46
of taking quite a long time there's lots 05:47
of paperwork to do stupid and simple as 05:48
is this is immigration yeah nothing is 05:50
stupid with immigration if You' just 05:53
like to follow me we need to take your 05:55
photograph okay cuz that's standard 05:56
procedure when we stop anyone and then 05:58
we need to place you in the care of our 06:00
holding facility so that we can come 06:01
back and talk to you in a more 06:03
comfortable environment just follow me 06:04
now you realize with my point of view of 06:07
this is if you have nothing to worry 06:12
about then everything will be fine but 06:14
we need to establish that before we can 06:15
do anything else okay and the only way 06:17
we can really do that is by sitting down 06:19
having a proper chat with you all right 06:20
then so if You' just like to follow me 06:22
the passenger says he's here to stay 06:24
with his cousin and help decorate the 06:26
house 06:28
it always arouses suspicion if somebody 06:30
says they don't have a job and yet 06:31
they're here on holiday you kind of 06:34
think well he's not from a wealthy 06:35
background he doesn't appear to have 06:37
lots of savings in fact he says he has 06:39
no savings he's had to save to pay for 06:40
his course you know it's just is the 06:43
credible that somebody with little money 06:45
would come on a 5we holiday and that's 06:46
what we need to establish thanks a lot 06:48
while The Bodyguard is detained officer 06:51
Lee checks his story moment is that all 06:53
right okay can you tell me why um your 06:55
cousin's coming to the UK 06:58
today the sponsor the cousin has just 07:01
corroborated pretty much what the 07:04
passengers said they've got lots of 07:06
decorating to do in their house they've 07:08
been trying to do their house up for 10 07:09
months and um he's just coming to help 07:11
them 07:14
decorate um which is odd but hey 07:15
everyone has their way they want to 07:17
spend their holidays I understand you 07:19
wanted to speak to me the holding room 07:22
at Heathrow is hardly the best place as 07:24
I exp to you before we have to make 07:26
further inquiries starting 07:28
the body we can't tell you this is 07:30
seriously me okay let me just exp 07:32
unnecessary if I was a criminal if I did 07:34
something wrong whatsoever fine do it 07:36
but not like this we're not suggesting 07:39
for one moment you're a criminal okay 07:41
you are seeking entry to the 07:42
UK our job as immigration officers is to 07:44
establish whether you qualify for entry 07:47
don't don't insult my telligence here 07:50
send me back thing we have to go through 07:52
a due process I'm this close taking my 07:54
cigarettes and just out here to just to 07:57
have a stupid cigarette okay well and 07:59
it's not even the cigarettes problem 08:01
it's right well I can't help you with 08:03
the cigarette thing cuz you can't smoke 08:04
in the airport so I suggest physically 08:06
nobody's going to stop me taking a 08:08
cigarette out of the bag now you will be 08:09
restrained it won't be able to trust me 08:12
okay if you're making threat so we will 08:16
call the police okay well the police 08:18
will be called and you'll be arrested 08:19
well at least I'll have a cigarette 08:21
there you won't be able to cuz you can't 08:22
smoke in police stations either so get 08:23
somebody here right now someone is 08:26
coming to speak to you 5 hours now I'm 08:27
waiting you see that as acceptable the 08:30
only thing you can do let me just the 08:34
only thing you can do is wait patiently 08:35
because you and me talking like this is 08:38
just delaying it and that will if that's 08:39
immigration isn't just about Manning the 08:41
borders in 135 countries around the 08:45
world British immigration staff bet 08:48
those who want to travel 08:51
Brit in India much of this work is done 08:54
at the British High Commission in delh 08:57
[Music] 09:00
at 7:30 Visa applications are delivered 09:06
under armed 09:09
guard after 1,500 are processed every 09:12
day entry clearance officer Dan Brown 09:19
has been seconded to Delhi for 3 years 09:22
he's one of four staff processing 09:25
today's 09:26
cases where the first stage of the 09:28
immigration control and it's it's our 09:30
job to maintain the Integrity of the 09:32
control so we're trying to stop people 09:33
um traveling in the first place to the 09:35
UK we've got no right to go 09:37
there some applicants need to come to 09:40
the high Commission in person for extra 09:42
checks officer Brown prepares to 09:46
question a financial analyst whose 09:48
figures don't add up okay this 09:50
gentleman's applied under the old highly 09:52
skilled migrant scheme so it's now known 09:54
as the points based system he sent his 09:56
documents off to the 09:58
to prove that he is a highly skilled 10:00
migrant he has to show that he achieved 10:02
75 points from his age his 10:05
qualifications and his previous 10:08
earnings who completed your application 10:10
form sorry who completed your 10:14
application form me and are the details 10:16
on your form correct 10:18
yeah what did you get points for uh my 10:22
graduation and 10:27
Um how my age and which college did you 10:30
go to did you go to osmania itself or to 10:33
a different College osmania too when did 10:36
you start at 10:38
osmania oh I think uh 2 10:41
It's 1999 something 10:45
that and what subject was your degree 10:48
in sry what did you specialize in for 10:53
your 10:56
degree yeah all right 10:57
actually it's a long time so I can't 11:00
remember officer Brown record every 11:03
answer no matter how 11:06
vague so you can't tell me what what 11:12
speciality you did your degree in oh 11:14
it's might be in accounting it might be 11:17
what do you mean might be in accounting 11:19
no it's it's I think it's it's in 11:20
accounting actor 11:21
at herro the South African bodyguard is 11:29
still being held you seen the end of one 11:31
ship and the start of another officer 11:34
Richard Smith picks up the cas you've 11:37
not you've not been here before have you 11:39
you've not been out of South Africa 11:40
before no you coming with very little 11:42
funds is that because of those um things 11:44
well these these are the things that 11:47
make us think that you're not a genuine 11:49
visitor okay okay okay in my friend of 11:51
mine I'm just trying to explain they 11:53
should trust me because um 11:55
the innocence of the first time travel 11:59
and I'm not here to make or do anything 12:01
wrong or try to get work everything's 12:04
right there I understand what you're 12:06
saying that's what they're looking out 12:08
for okay have you understood just 12:09
because I'm poor I can't help it I don't 12:12
have money 12:15
now with the interview over the man 12:16
won't have to wait much longer for a 12:19
decision if your opinion is that we 12:21
should give him the benefit of the D 12:23
there are aspects to his circumstances 12:24
aren't entirely satisfactory but on the 12:26
other hand and um there are aspects to 12:28
his case that are perfectly satisfactory 12:31
I get the impression that he at this 12:32
moment in time is not intending to stay 12:35
and work we've got your fingerprints on 12:37
record we've noted that you intend to go 12:39
back on whatever it was in May 18th of 12:41
May 17th of May okay you got a return 12:44
ticket okay okay so I'm happy that 12:46
you're not intending to stay at this 12:50
point don't change your mind within the 12:51
next few weeks because you are now on 12:54
record okay obviously that was my point 12:55
from the 12:58
store immigration has given him what 13:00
they call entry for special conditions 13:02
if he stays Beyond his return flight 13:05
they they'll be the first to 13:07
[Music] 13:14
know for the 8,000 Indians a week or 13:16
prior to come to the UK it's not just a 13:19
case of working a 13:22
[Music] 13:24
ticket Hope Has provide mountains of 13:25
payment to the visa application 13:28
center today is one of the busiest days 13:32
of the year the start of the Summer 13:35
Rush Visa applicants must pay a fee 13:39
upwards of 13:41
£65 and have a valid reason to 13:42
D so you have to look at the black 13:46
camera bigger one for 10 seconds on the 13:48
top in 2007 they began storing mug shots 13:50
and fingerprints of everyone who applies 13:53
to help stop failed applicants trying 13:56
again with full documents or false 13:58
identities on the other side of Delhi 14:02
the high commission fraud experts check 14:04
each 14:07
application among those plowing through 14:09
the paperwork today is Visa assistant 14:11
bner Gander every day we receive 14:14
forgeries with applications it includes 14:16
family visits and forgery with different 14:18
kind of documents let's say educational 14:20
documents graduation degree sometimes 14:23
when we cross check with the concern 14:25
universities and it came as 14:27
Falls officer gander is responsible for 14:30
checking the documents of the man being 14:33
interviewed by Officer Brown it doesn't 14:35
take long to arouse her 14:38
suspicions osmania University in India 14:40
is 14:43
genuine the certificate is fake now 14:44
officer Gander wants to know more about 14:48
his other documents uh this bank 14:50
statement does not look genuine to me 14:51
and uh it's having a spelling errors uh 14:55
and then and applicant has submitted a 14:58
huge transaction huge balance balance is 15:00
very high right uh sir my name is bhavna 15:03
and I'm calling from the British High 15:06
commission New Delhi I would be very 15:08
grateful if you could verify this uh 15:10
bank statement for me sir I would like 15:12
to verify three things in this account 15:15
one would be who is the account holder's 15:17
name second it's part of my daily 15:20
routine that you know have yeah yeah 15:23
because you know so many people appli 15:25
for Visa so my duty is to 15:26
from your 15:29
system could you tell me the transaction 15:30
on 84 15:32
2008 there's a salary transfer of 15:35
45,000 so no transaction happened on 15:41
84208 right thank you sir so much okay 15:44
bye-bye 15:47
sir I got the written confirmation on 15:48
this case from my bank manager okay what 15:51
was the result it's forged the statement 15:53
produced by an applicant is false and he 15:56
has sent an original bank statement and 15:58
this is the one from the bank and it's 16:01
not showing any any of the salary 16:02
deposits so it totally doesn't match up 16:04
so none of the transaction match with 16:06
their records it's all 16:07
portion in the interview the man is 16:10
unaware that officer Brown knows all 16:13
about this fraudulent 16:14
documents what do you do in 16:16
India I work as a financial 16:19
analyst what is your income it's around 16:24
$45,000 per month is that before tax or 16:27
after tax it's after 16:31
tax what is your salary before tax it 16:34
going to be around 6 lakh something 6 16:38
lakh below 6 lakh 16:40
yeah um if you were earning 6 lakhs per 16:45
year and paying tax um you wouldn't take 16:47
home 45,000 rupees per month can you 16:50
explain this yeah actually that's um 16:53
that's it's not the it's not the you 16:56
know the basic coming in it's like my 16:59
all my overtime and everything the tax 17:01
so you don't declare your overtime on 17:03
your tax returns is that right you can 17:04
say 17:06
that but it's it's it's like it's all 17:07
company technical things I actually I 17:10
don't know how they do 17:13
that can I can I go have a glass of 17:18
water 17:21
please I'll get somebody to get you on 17:22
all right can you get him some water 17:25
please water yes please officer Brown 17:27
now makes his main news you have given 17:30
us a bank statement yeah can you tell me 17:32
the last transaction that is shown on 17:35
your 17:36
account um I usually um I don't like do 17:38
all this bank statement all my wife 17:42
usually take care of all these things 17:44
and she like I just signed a check for 17:47
for a month and what day every month do 17:50
you get paid I think seventh of is that 17:52
when the money goes into your account 17:55
yeah 17:57
okay as part of your application process 17:59
um we've checked your bank statement 18:01
with the bank um the bank have told us 18:03
that the bank that the statement you've 18:05
given us is not genuine can you explain 18:07
this 18:10
actually I got no idea regarding these 18:12
things sorry I got no idea why they have 18:15
SE that can you tell us why you have 18:18
given us a false 18:20
document uh actually it's uh I uh 18:23
actually I don't have um knowledge about 18:28
these thing that is might for but sir 18:31
it's your it's your bank statement it's 18:33
your income your 18:35
name's and you have given us the 18:37
application you put in the 18:38
papers please tell me why you've 18:40
submitted a false document I don't take 18:42
care of these things I just asked my 18:44
wife to give me and she just put on so 18:47
is it your wife that has given us a 18:50
false document might be because um 18:52
actually I don't I'm not interested that 18:55
much in interested in going back she is 18:58
the one like she she wants to be there 19:00
for 2 years or so so that's the only 19:02
reason okay what I'm going to do now um 19:06
obviously because you've submitted false 19:08
documents your application will be 19:10
refused um I'll give you a letter to 19:11
explain the reasons why the 19:13
application's been refused all right uh 19:15
so you going to give me all the 19:18
documents right now or I'm not going to 19:19
give you the false documents back now 19:21
all right are you going to give me my 19:23
passport I'll give you your passport 19:24
back officer Brown tells the man to wait 19:27
for his passport submitting forc 19:30
documents is a criminal offense the 19:33
police have being 19:35
called the financial analyst formulates 19:40
a plan he'll make for the 19:43
exit but the door from the British High 19:48
commission back into the streets of 19:51
Delhi is locked 19:52
[Music] 19:58
the financial analyst has nowhere to go 20:02
and now the police have 20:05
arrived um he's applied for a UK Visa um 20:10
he's given us bank statements and he's 20:14
given us um a degree certificate um and 20:16
we have written confirmation that that 20:19
those are false documents is it is it is 20:21
it like that much a big CR that you 20:23
going to the fact that you've put in 20:27
false documents means that I can't to be 20:29
honest I can't believe anything that 20:31
you've told me you do make a fresh 20:32
application your application will 20:35
automatically be refused so you won't be 20:36
issued a UK visa for the next 10 years 20:38
for the next 10 20:41
years okay thank you a man was arrested 20:43
bailed and later charge with cheating 20:46
and making false 20:48
documents he'll be unable to enter the 20:50
UK for at least 10 years 20:52
immigration officer Sean flah and his 21:00
enforcement team are planning to raid an 21:03
Indian restaurant in 21:05
liver we've uh received intelligence to 21:08

foreign Nationals working illegally at 21:15
this pris Our intention as to carry out 21:17
an enforcement visit to the property to 21:20

IM we're all get sitting them in the St 22:14
area and then we're going to process 22:17
them one by 22:18
one officers search the premises for any 22:19
evidence that will identify the workers 22:22
and what we found is the Gent told us 22:25
that he has some identification so he's 22:26
presented to us an asylum registration 22:28
card what we'll do for now is take some 22:30
basic details go through to the safe 22:31
area um cond look some further Texs and 22:33
then we'll see what's going to happen uh 22:35
just explain to her we'll get uh you or 22:38
another in terms to back on for her to 22:41
worry about just wants to sit there 22:43
while we do our 22:45
checks this lady here on the tourist 22:47
visa um but she's obviously working in 22:50
the kitchen she's got the white apron on 22:53
um she's going to be arrested now on 22:55
susp of working in the UK 22:58
legally the names of the 23:00
employees it's not the first time 23:02
they've been here the employer has been 23:04
caught hiring illegal workers 23:07
before they walk here know couple of 23:10
help how many days a week would you 23:15
say three nights week um I will be 23:21
speaking to you shortly about the status 23:24
of your employees 23:26
business okay so if you don't mind just 23:28
hanging on here for it'll only be a 23:30
short while officer FL and the team 23:33
won't leave until they discover who is 23:36
legal and who is 23:38
not at the British High Commission in 23:45
Delhi officer Hassan sadiki is with a 23:47
man he believes may have entered a sham 23:50
marriage to get a UK 23:52
[Music] 23:54
Visa jwin sing recently entered Britain 23:56
illegally that's when he met a British 24:01
woman back in India the couple have tied 24:03
the 24:06
not now he wants UK 24:07
residency do you have any evidence of 24:11
living 24:13
together an album with a picture of 24:22
yourself or with somebody else is not 24:25
evidence of living together but 24:26
it's in here right tell me exactly what 24:31
it is that you have in 24:33
here my bills uh water well water 24:35
bills sorry council tax this is 24:40
dat how old is your wife 24:43
35 60 now she's 60 and how old are you 24:47
what you work me 35 nor me wife is 60 24:52
and I 24:57
waiting outside is the 60-year-old bride 25:02
a school teacher from 25:06
Wilds you've got a lot of photographs 25:08
having spent time together do you take 25:10
these photographs for the benefits of 25:12
this 25:14
interview wife is very fond of taking 25:21
photographs I've noticed that none of 25:24
the photographs have anyone that I could 25:26
assume is her friend because all of the 25:28
um people in these photographs all seem 25:31
to be other Asian males of your age can 25:33
you explain why and have you ever met 25:35
any of her 25:37
friends best 25:39
friend name is Glen glenis glenis yeah I 25:42
met her best friend her name is glenis 25:47
why have you chosen to marry somebody 25:50
who is um slightly older than yourself 25:52
um and has two grown-up children who I'm 25:56
assuming doesn't speak 26:01
Punjabi and I've noticed that your level 26:03
of English is is relatively basic is 26:06
there any particular reason that you've 26:09
chosen to marry this 26:10
lady in love with her and there was no 26:18
other reason 26:21
[Music] 26:22
to Mr Singh may say he's in love but it 26:24
takes more than that to qualify for 26:28
residency and his Welsh wife has yet to 26:31
be 26:33
quizzed at the restaurant in Liverpool 26:37
that's not looking good for the owner 26:39
the enforcement team has doubts about 26:41
another member of his St well just at 26:43
the moment so I'm just asking the 26:45
gentleman some very basic details about 26:47
the identity that he's presented me and 26:49
roughly how long he's been in the UK 26:51
maybe what his status is how long you 26:52
been in the 26:54
UK years two three 26:56
years what's happened with your 26:59
application application 27:03
finished who's speaking 27:06
Sani 27:08
cish the team interpreters when L 27:12
becomes how much does he actually get 27:16
paid for work in here 27:19
emplo yes 27:36
sir10 per 27:43
day can you ask him what documentation 27:45
he showed his employer that he was 27:49
allowed to work basically 27:52
no the owner pays no tax or national 28:01
insurance for this worker and gives him 28:04
only a fraction of the minimum wage 28:06
check the 28:09
finger I'm just going to check your 28:11
fingerprints okay team wants to find out 28:12
the worker status in the UK finger one 28:15
they scan his fingerprints and send them 28:18
for analysis to a national datab base 28:20
the results will come back in minutes 28:23
do you have any evidence that they have 28:28
right to work in the 28:32
UK I asked them for their you know 28:35
uh insurance number and on all all these 28:39
things right I'm just going to give you 28:42
a quick search around your headdress 28:44
okay the 28:47
lady and she was found working in the 28:49
kitchen he only came today we not 28:53
working in s 28:56
she was in the kitchen she was in the 28:58
kitchen but she she here she was wearing 29:00
an apron in the kitchen in the kit she 29:02
may just trying to make some n or 29:06
something like that I don't know for who 29:09
my I was not so I Cann answer the 29:12
question so she wasn't working she may 29:15
have been making 29:18
n list 29:20
fingerprint work 29:22
froma and is here illegally 29:24
it's listen you're 29:28
upset it's I'm arresting you on 29:31
suspicion of working illegally in the UK 29:34
okay you're not obliged to say anything 29:35
that you wish to do so AR offense if you 29:37
not mention when questioned something 29:39
would you L around in court anything you 29:40
do say may be given an Evidence okay 29:42
your safety mine okay you're a little 29:46
bit upset I'm going to place you in 29:47
cuffs you want to put your hands out in 29:48
front for me put your hands out in front 29:49
thank 29:52
you okay 29:55
at the end of the day he's LED them to 29:58
us he's employed them illegally he's put 29:59
us in a position now where we've got to 30:02
arrest him and put in 30:03
police this is a real cost of illegal 30:06
working people in tears whether it's 30:08
illegal people like this or legal people 30:11
who sometimes the businesses go to the 30:14
wall because some individuals undercut 30:15
them by thousands you know it all ends 30:19
in tear of somebody um unfortunately for 30:21
these people tonight some didn't tear 30:24
them they're going to end up in a night 30:25
in the cells but the very very least um 30:26
so yeah I'm going to go back in there 30:30
now I'm going to tell him about a 30:32
penalty he's first finding 10,000 P per 30:33
person at the end of the day you haven't 30:36
done your adequate checks you employed 30:38
people illegally which resulted now in 30:41
two possibly three people being 30:44
arrested we have people now detained in 30:46
the back of the van who I need to get to 30:49
the police station if you want to sign 30:50
it sign it if you don't want to sign it 30:51
I'll leave it and record it that you 30:53
haven't 30:54
signed without the passport of the woman 30:56
found working in the kitchen it's harder 30:59
to prove that she shouldn't have been 31:01
there but help 31:04
is you're you're the brother-in-law so 31:06
she's over here with a passport and Etc 31:09
would you be able to get hold of that 31:12
passport have you got it here yeah I got 31:14
her passport can I have a look please 31:16
yes sir thank 31:18
you yes will let's gra it from 31:22
him the woman's relative claims this was 31:25
her first time at the restaurant the 31:28
only reason she was only there to learn 31:30
how 31:31
to unless it's a very very unfortunate 31:32
night where she picks the only night 31:36
that we visit to be learning how to make 31:38
a curry in the kitchen that's very 31:40
unfortunate it is very unfortunate or 31:42
perhaps it's not the first night that 31:45
she's been in the kitchen that's I'm 31:46
sure I'm sure she just arrived we can 31:47
see that I know she arrived two weeks 31:48
ago two weeks ago but it is very 31:50
unfortunate um the enforcement team 31:53
don't believe her 31:56
she is removed back to India where we 31:59
going the man from Iraq was also sent 32:01
back 32:04
home the employer is fined 32:05
£20,000 in Delhi is the turn of the 32:15
Welsh bride to be 32:17
interviewed she must convinced the 32:19
immigration officers the marriage is 32:21
genuine or it will be the end of the 32:23
couple's dream to set up home in Wales 32:25
hello Evelyn 32:27
Rita thank you how are you you all right 32:29
everything good okay I'm nervous yeah 32:32
understandably everybody who sits on 32:35
that side of the chair always 32:37
is how are you finding uh living in 32:39
Punjab it's absolutely amazing I I truly 32:42
embraced India even before it came here 32:45
I've had lots of videos sent over so I 32:48
was able to wash all those and I knew 32:50
everybody by sight before I met them so 32:53
that was that was nice and I you know 32:57
how how do you think they've reacted 32:59
regards to you know um you you're from 33:02
the UK yes and uh you don't speak 33:05
Punjabi how how was the interaction well 33:08
you 33:11
know they very loving towards me and 33:12
they were very accepting of me from the 33:16
very beginning even when we were talking 33:18
and laughing and saying sasri girl on 33:21
the phone and you know things like that 33:24
so tell me a little bit about about how 33:26
both you two met in the UK I was out 33:28
walking my dog on the beach and on the 33:31
Breakwater and I saw J sitting on his 33:34
own and um I I thought I just said hello 33:37
you know and he said hello and he smiled 33:41
at me with his gorgeous smile and I 33:43
thought oh he's rather 33:46
gorgeous but he's very young slowly 33:48
slowly we got to know each other and I 33:51
helped him with his English and um we 33:54
just clicked you know we clicked 33:58
straight away how did you decide to get 34:00
married what was the you know who made a 34:03
decision did he propose well it wasn't a 34:05
romantic it wasn't a romantic setting at 34:08
all I I I'm I think we were in the 34:11
kitchen and 34:14
um we probably cuz he's been showing me 34:16
Indian cooking and how to make chapattis 34:19
and things like that so we probably I 34:21
think it was had a meal and sat down and 34:23
and he said do you think you would like 34:27
to marry me so I said yes I said yes 34:29
definite thank you great what would you 34:34
do and if there's a scenario where 34:38
unfortunately your sponsor doesn't get 34:41
entry clearance and cannot join you in 34:42
the UK are are you happy to stay in 34:44
India you do like it a lot here you know 34:47
his family I I like it a lot here and I 34:49
know his family but you know all my 34:52
family are in the UK my dog and my house 34:54
and my home and my two boys so really 34:58
you know living in India isn't an option 35:03
for me what what are you going to do 35:06
because if we refuse entry clearance are 35:09
are you going to stay or are you going 35:11
to go back well that's what it comes out 35:13
to 35:16
yeah I I I haven't really I haven't 35:17
thought about that to be 35:20
honest because I 35:22
thought I you know I just I thought 35:26
because we it's genuine relationship and 35:29
we love each other and we want to be 35:32
together that we might be lucky enough 35:34
to get a 35:37
visa and that's that's honestly the only 35:38
answer I can give you thank you thank 35:42
you very much thank thank you very 35:44
much I'm not going back without him all 35:46
right the immigration team in Delhi 35:55
process up to 1500 Visa applications 35:58
every 36:00
day officer John Spence is a key member 36:02
of the team it's his job to investigate 36:05
whether applications are credible rul 36:08
J rul Jen R Jen is applying for a 2-year 36:12
working tourist visa he must prove 36:16
tourism is the main reason for his 36:19
trip okay how long do you intend to stay 36:22
in the UK 36:25
2 years what do you intend to see him do 36:29
in the 36:31
UK such 36:35
as Birmingham Palace and Tower 36:38
Bridge okay what's Birmingham Palace and 36:42
why do you wish to see 36:45
it and it is worth seeing and I want to 36:50
see it so why can you only name me two 36:53
places that you wish to see in the UK um 36:56
one of which is not the correct name and 36:59
one of which you can't describe to me 37:01
what it 37:03
is officer Spence types up every answer 37:04
to provide a record of the 37:08
EV when I go on holiday I know exactly 37:10
what I want to see if I came to India 37:12
I'd say I want to see the Taj Mahal I'd 37:14
say I want to see the golden temple why 37:16
can't you tell me what you want to see 37:18
in the 37:19
UK England is very famous and many 37:24
places to see 37:28
that okay you've been off in a job doing 37:31
what theob 37:39
of so that I can cover my 37:41
expens officer Spence has heard enough 37:45
to make a 37:47
decision I'm not satisfied that you want 37:51
to enter the UK for a working holiday as 37:53
you have claimed or that you plan to 37:55
leave the UK at the end of your stay the 37:57
only thing you have managed to plan is a 37:59
part-time job and that suggests for me 38:01
that is your intention to St full-time 38:04
employment rather than to go to the UK 38:05
for tourism I mean he has to show that 38:07
the primary purpose of his visit is for 38:09
tourism um I'm afraid that this chap 38:12
hasn't done so this chap knows only two 38:14
things that to tell me about the UK one 38:17
of which is Burmingham Palace which 38:19
clearly doesn't exist other's tower 38:21
bridge and I'm not absolutely certain he 38:23
knows what that is um my suspicion 38:24
frankly is that this chap is going to go 38:26
there to the UK to work for 2 years at a 38:29
marketly reduced rate than employing the 38:32
same person in the UK with cost his 38:34
sponsor no redeeming features at all as 38:36
far as I can make out a completely 38:39
straightforward 38:40
refusal bad news for the wbe tourist but 38:42
will the newly wordss do any 38:46
better I I need a hug I need hugs oh 38:48
this is huge for us because I don't want 38:52
to go back to the UK without about my 38:56
husband when you love someone and you 38:57
used to being with them that's very 38:59
difficult it's not easy for officer 39:03
sadiki either he consults his boss Alex 39:05
Wy do you have any concerns about the 39:10
relationship to well um there is a 39:12
significant age difference and um you 39:15
know it's open to well you know 39:19
interpretation here but um I cannot from 39:21
the immigration rules say that there is 39:25
this is not a genuine marriage and I 39:27
satisfying the relationship subsists 39:29
well I I can be as satisfied as I can be 39:31
on paper and from the interview I can't 39:34
really say what's inside someone's heart 39:36
I do realize it's a bit of a sensitive 39:38
area and it is subject to 39:40
exploitation but uh given the 39:42
information you've given me I think 39:44
we're going to have to issue the Visa 39:45
okay just just do that let's do that 39:47
I'll go and tell them right now all 39:49
right thanks bye 39:50
[Music] 39:58
hi have a seat please please have a seat 40:01
thank 40:03
you um having assessed the application 40:05
and referred it um we've decided to 40:08
issue entry clearance and um we're going 40:11
to basically ask J to undertake a 40:15
medical check before we issue the 40:18
Visa um so that may take a little 40:20
while and um I hope you have a long 40:24
fruitful marriage apart from when I had 40:29
the children this is the happiest day of 40:31
my life and and a really good start for 40:33
both of us I hope your happiness 40:37
[Music] 40:45
lost so how do you 40:50
feel very excited and happy happy and 40:54
just so thankful and that they know they 40:59
believed us and our story is 100% true 41:02
and now we can do all the things that we 41:07
plan to do can't we we're going to teach 41:09
just to drive in the UK and uh study and 41:12
learn more English you know well it just 41:17
means everything you know it's our 41:19
future and um I know we'll have a good 41:22
future together 41:26
jaswin and his wife are now back in the 41:28
UK living together in Wales 41:30

[English]
it's estimated that up to 1 million
people live or work illegally in the UK
it's the job of enforcement teams to
track those people down and remove them
from
[Music]
Britain assistant immigration officer
Adele Partington is part of a team in
Glasgow preparing for a raid it's
currently 10 6 in the morning and we're
all just getting pitted up and ready to
go out and carry out the rest team visit
it's part of the job but you always
still get a little bit of of so it would
be normal if get any first visit is to
Flat 21 Target of the visit is a
Pakistani male the intelligence for this
visit suggests that Mr sha lives at the
Target address with 10 or 11 other
Pakistani males uh some of the occupants
allegedly have counterfeit documentation
the intention today is obviously to
search for and arrest Mr sha and any
other immigration offenders that we come
across okay thank
you well the target is to locate and
arrest the offender but for this package
although it's listed only one offender
there's a possibility of 10 or 11 other
people residing at the address we could
also be possible offenders as well so it
can be straightforward or they can be
complicated and until you actually get
through the door you don't you don't
know what you're going to find the flat
is not far from the team's base it's now
7: a.m.
can you open the door please imigration
police immigration police we've got a
warant to be here you take us through to
11 room please how many people are in
the premises you have a seat please it
appears the early visit is paid off the
occupants were still in bed okay so
what's your immigration stat I'm in
give a passport it's in my wallet inside
the okay we need access to that door and
that
door Pakistani identity card got keys
there are only two people in the flat
there are also two locked doors and no
keys right if you don't have keys we're
going to knock the door in anyway so
it's up to
yourself ah
the intelligence that there are 10
people living here seems to be wrong and
the two men they've just found are
both but the kitchen window of this
third floor flat is
open officers think someone has done the
unthinkable just had a jumper uh from
the flat and I reckon it's about 50
ft one of the occupants tried to climb
down the
drain he lost his
footing he's managed to struggle to the
dust bins at the rear of the
building did anybody else jump out uh
there one guys one guy where is he is he
hot no no no where is he other side
other side there
we're on trying to find El just now we
believe he's been over the fence here
into the green area so just having a
look to try and faint him just
now the other man must have kept his
grip when he climbed down and now he's
on the
run but his injured friend is losing
Consciousness you back my SP put your
back
yeah Ashley PE has been with the
immigration service for just over a year
okay this is a first Ser all right
better thank you
okay sah come on speak to me tries to
keep the man awake
help I know you're back so try and stay
calm okay try not to
move you're okay the paramedics quickly
decided to get the man to hpit rescue
boards they fear he has broken his back
from the impact of the
fall in hospital he's told his spine is
fractured when his immigration paperwork
is complete he'll be sent back to
Pakistan the runner remains at
large Terminal 3 at Heathrow is the main
entry point for travelers from the
Middle East America Asia and Africa
officers have stopped a passenger from
Johannesburg who's flown in on a tourist
visa but he doesn't have much money so
they suspect he may be here to work
South African gentleman mhm he's a a
very solidly built South African
gentleman okay put occupation I think as
bodyguard right while his Landing card
and he has apparently spent um the
recent months in South Africa doing a
bodyguard training course he may be
looking for that kind of work in the UK
okay however so far we've told us to
come to visit a cousin okay so that's
all we've got so far
immigration officer Lisa Lee
investigates pav is it Pavia pavier how
do you say your name sir Pavia would you
know you like to follow me I'm going to
be dealing with you initially today and
then a colleague of mine will be taking
over the case um how long is this going
to be as long as it takes her
unfortunately these things have a habit
of taking quite a long time there's lots
of paperwork to do stupid and simple as
is this is immigration yeah nothing is
stupid with immigration if You' just
like to follow me we need to take your
photograph okay cuz that's standard
procedure when we stop anyone and then
we need to place you in the care of our
holding facility so that we can come
back and talk to you in a more
comfortable environment just follow me
now you realize with my point of view of
this is if you have nothing to worry
about then everything will be fine but
we need to establish that before we can
do anything else okay and the only way
we can really do that is by sitting down
having a proper chat with you all right
then so if You' just like to follow me
the passenger says he's here to stay
with his cousin and help decorate the
house
it always arouses suspicion if somebody
says they don't have a job and yet
they're here on holiday you kind of
think well he's not from a wealthy
background he doesn't appear to have
lots of savings in fact he says he has
no savings he's had to save to pay for
his course you know it's just is the
credible that somebody with little money
would come on a 5we holiday and that's
what we need to establish thanks a lot
while The Bodyguard is detained officer
Lee checks his story moment is that all
right okay can you tell me why um your
cousin's coming to the UK
today the sponsor the cousin has just
corroborated pretty much what the
passengers said they've got lots of
decorating to do in their house they've
been trying to do their house up for 10
months and um he's just coming to help
them
decorate um which is odd but hey
everyone has their way they want to
spend their holidays I understand you
wanted to speak to me the holding room
at Heathrow is hardly the best place as
I exp to you before we have to make
further inquiries starting
the body we can't tell you this is
seriously me okay let me just exp
unnecessary if I was a criminal if I did
something wrong whatsoever fine do it
but not like this we're not suggesting
for one moment you're a criminal okay
you are seeking entry to the
UK our job as immigration officers is to
establish whether you qualify for entry
don't don't insult my telligence here
send me back thing we have to go through
a due process I'm this close taking my
cigarettes and just out here to just to
have a stupid cigarette okay well and
it's not even the cigarettes problem
it's right well I can't help you with
the cigarette thing cuz you can't smoke
in the airport so I suggest physically
nobody's going to stop me taking a
cigarette out of the bag now you will be
restrained it won't be able to trust me
okay if you're making threat so we will
call the police okay well the police
will be called and you'll be arrested
well at least I'll have a cigarette
there you won't be able to cuz you can't
smoke in police stations either so get
somebody here right now someone is
coming to speak to you 5 hours now I'm
waiting you see that as acceptable the
only thing you can do let me just the
only thing you can do is wait patiently
because you and me talking like this is
just delaying it and that will if that's
immigration isn't just about Manning the
borders in 135 countries around the
world British immigration staff bet
those who want to travel
Brit in India much of this work is done
at the British High Commission in delh
[Music]
at 7:30 Visa applications are delivered
under armed
guard after 1,500 are processed every
day entry clearance officer Dan Brown
has been seconded to Delhi for 3 years
he's one of four staff processing
today's
cases where the first stage of the
immigration control and it's it's our
job to maintain the Integrity of the
control so we're trying to stop people
um traveling in the first place to the
UK we've got no right to go
there some applicants need to come to
the high Commission in person for extra
checks officer Brown prepares to
question a financial analyst whose
figures don't add up okay this
gentleman's applied under the old highly
skilled migrant scheme so it's now known
as the points based system he sent his
documents off to the
to prove that he is a highly skilled
migrant he has to show that he achieved
75 points from his age his
qualifications and his previous
earnings who completed your application
form sorry who completed your
application form me and are the details
on your form correct
yeah what did you get points for uh my
graduation and
Um how my age and which college did you
go to did you go to osmania itself or to
a different College osmania too when did
you start at
osmania oh I think uh 2
It's 1999 something
that and what subject was your degree
in sry what did you specialize in for
your
degree yeah all right
actually it's a long time so I can't
remember officer Brown record every
answer no matter how
vague so you can't tell me what what
speciality you did your degree in oh
it's might be in accounting it might be
what do you mean might be in accounting
no it's it's I think it's it's in
accounting actor
at herro the South African bodyguard is
still being held you seen the end of one
ship and the start of another officer
Richard Smith picks up the cas you've
not you've not been here before have you
you've not been out of South Africa
before no you coming with very little
funds is that because of those um things
well these these are the things that
make us think that you're not a genuine
visitor okay okay okay in my friend of
mine I'm just trying to explain they
should trust me because um
the innocence of the first time travel
and I'm not here to make or do anything
wrong or try to get work everything's
right there I understand what you're
saying that's what they're looking out
for okay have you understood just
because I'm poor I can't help it I don't
have money
now with the interview over the man
won't have to wait much longer for a
decision if your opinion is that we
should give him the benefit of the D
there are aspects to his circumstances
aren't entirely satisfactory but on the
other hand and um there are aspects to
his case that are perfectly satisfactory
I get the impression that he at this
moment in time is not intending to stay
and work we've got your fingerprints on
record we've noted that you intend to go
back on whatever it was in May 18th of
May 17th of May okay you got a return
ticket okay okay so I'm happy that
you're not intending to stay at this
point don't change your mind within the
next few weeks because you are now on
record okay obviously that was my point
from the
store immigration has given him what
they call entry for special conditions
if he stays Beyond his return flight
they they'll be the first to
[Music]
know for the 8,000 Indians a week or
prior to come to the UK it's not just a
case of working a
[Music]
ticket Hope Has provide mountains of
payment to the visa application
center today is one of the busiest days
of the year the start of the Summer
Rush Visa applicants must pay a fee
upwards of
£65 and have a valid reason to
D so you have to look at the black
camera bigger one for 10 seconds on the
top in 2007 they began storing mug shots
and fingerprints of everyone who applies
to help stop failed applicants trying
again with full documents or false
identities on the other side of Delhi
the high commission fraud experts check
each
application among those plowing through
the paperwork today is Visa assistant
bner Gander every day we receive
forgeries with applications it includes
family visits and forgery with different
kind of documents let's say educational
documents graduation degree sometimes
when we cross check with the concern
universities and it came as
Falls officer gander is responsible for
checking the documents of the man being
interviewed by Officer Brown it doesn't
take long to arouse her
suspicions osmania University in India
is
genuine the certificate is fake now
officer Gander wants to know more about
his other documents uh this bank
statement does not look genuine to me
and uh it's having a spelling errors uh
and then and applicant has submitted a
huge transaction huge balance balance is
very high right uh sir my name is bhavna
and I'm calling from the British High
commission New Delhi I would be very
grateful if you could verify this uh
bank statement for me sir I would like
to verify three things in this account
one would be who is the account holder's
name second it's part of my daily
routine that you know have yeah yeah
because you know so many people appli
for Visa so my duty is to
from your
system could you tell me the transaction
on 84
2008 there's a salary transfer of
45,000 so no transaction happened on
84208 right thank you sir so much okay
bye-bye
sir I got the written confirmation on
this case from my bank manager okay what
was the result it's forged the statement
produced by an applicant is false and he
has sent an original bank statement and
this is the one from the bank and it's
not showing any any of the salary
deposits so it totally doesn't match up
so none of the transaction match with
their records it's all
portion in the interview the man is
unaware that officer Brown knows all
about this fraudulent
documents what do you do in
India I work as a financial
analyst what is your income it's around
$45,000 per month is that before tax or
after tax it's after
tax what is your salary before tax it
going to be around 6 lakh something 6
lakh below 6 lakh
yeah um if you were earning 6 lakhs per
year and paying tax um you wouldn't take
home 45,000 rupees per month can you
explain this yeah actually that's um
that's it's not the it's not the you
know the basic coming in it's like my
all my overtime and everything the tax
so you don't declare your overtime on
your tax returns is that right you can
say
that but it's it's it's like it's all
company technical things I actually I
don't know how they do
that can I can I go have a glass of
water
please I'll get somebody to get you on
all right can you get him some water
please water yes please officer Brown
now makes his main news you have given
us a bank statement yeah can you tell me
the last transaction that is shown on
your
account um I usually um I don't like do
all this bank statement all my wife
usually take care of all these things
and she like I just signed a check for
for a month and what day every month do
you get paid I think seventh of is that
when the money goes into your account
yeah
okay as part of your application process
um we've checked your bank statement
with the bank um the bank have told us
that the bank that the statement you've
given us is not genuine can you explain
this
actually I got no idea regarding these
things sorry I got no idea why they have
SE that can you tell us why you have
given us a false
document uh actually it's uh I uh
actually I don't have um knowledge about
these thing that is might for but sir
it's your it's your bank statement it's
your income your
name's and you have given us the
application you put in the
papers please tell me why you've
submitted a false document I don't take
care of these things I just asked my
wife to give me and she just put on so
is it your wife that has given us a
false document might be because um
actually I don't I'm not interested that
much in interested in going back she is
the one like she she wants to be there
for 2 years or so so that's the only
reason okay what I'm going to do now um
obviously because you've submitted false
documents your application will be
refused um I'll give you a letter to
explain the reasons why the
application's been refused all right uh
so you going to give me all the
documents right now or I'm not going to
give you the false documents back now
all right are you going to give me my
passport I'll give you your passport
back officer Brown tells the man to wait
for his passport submitting forc
documents is a criminal offense the
police have being
called the financial analyst formulates
a plan he'll make for the
exit but the door from the British High
commission back into the streets of
Delhi is locked
[Music]
the financial analyst has nowhere to go
and now the police have
arrived um he's applied for a UK Visa um
he's given us bank statements and he's
given us um a degree certificate um and
we have written confirmation that that
those are false documents is it is it is
it like that much a big CR that you
going to the fact that you've put in
false documents means that I can't to be
honest I can't believe anything that
you've told me you do make a fresh
application your application will
automatically be refused so you won't be
issued a UK visa for the next 10 years
for the next 10
years okay thank you a man was arrested
bailed and later charge with cheating
and making false
documents he'll be unable to enter the
UK for at least 10 years
immigration officer Sean flah and his
enforcement team are planning to raid an
Indian restaurant in
liver we've uh received intelligence to
suggest that there are at least six
foreign Nationals working illegally at
this pris Our intention as to carry out
an enforcement visit to the property to
search for and arrest all immigration
offenders and establish the immigration
status of all those present
illegal working is going on on most high
streets it's virtual slavery they paid
well below the minimum wage they
shouldn't be working shouldn't be in the
UK the team has been keeping an eye on
the restroom now they're ready to
P immigration can you stop what you're
doing please put everything down stop
what you're doing please put the knife
down
please an employer can be fined up to
£10,000 for every illegal worker they
hire
and the team are continuing to sweep the
rest of the building make sure that
there's nobody um either in the basement
or in the other
floors
imig
IM we're all get sitting them in the St
area and then we're going to process
them one by
one officers search the premises for any
evidence that will identify the workers
and what we found is the Gent told us
that he has some identification so he's
presented to us an asylum registration
card what we'll do for now is take some
basic details go through to the safe
area um cond look some further Texs and
then we'll see what's going to happen uh
just explain to her we'll get uh you or
another in terms to back on for her to
worry about just wants to sit there
while we do our
checks this lady here on the tourist
visa um but she's obviously working in
the kitchen she's got the white apron on
um she's going to be arrested now on
susp of working in the UK
legally the names of the
employees it's not the first time
they've been here the employer has been
caught hiring illegal workers
before they walk here know couple of
help how many days a week would you
say three nights week um I will be
speaking to you shortly about the status
of your employees
business okay so if you don't mind just
hanging on here for it'll only be a
short while officer FL and the team
won't leave until they discover who is
legal and who is
not at the British High Commission in
Delhi officer Hassan sadiki is with a
man he believes may have entered a sham
marriage to get a UK
[Music]
Visa jwin sing recently entered Britain
illegally that's when he met a British
woman back in India the couple have tied
the
not now he wants UK
residency do you have any evidence of
living
together an album with a picture of
yourself or with somebody else is not
evidence of living together but
it's in here right tell me exactly what
it is that you have in
here my bills uh water well water
bills sorry council tax this is
dat how old is your wife
35 60 now she's 60 and how old are you
what you work me 35 nor me wife is 60
and I
waiting outside is the 60-year-old bride
a school teacher from
Wilds you've got a lot of photographs
having spent time together do you take
these photographs for the benefits of
this
interview wife is very fond of taking
photographs I've noticed that none of
the photographs have anyone that I could
assume is her friend because all of the
um people in these photographs all seem
to be other Asian males of your age can
you explain why and have you ever met
any of her
friends best
friend name is Glen glenis glenis yeah I
met her best friend her name is glenis
why have you chosen to marry somebody
who is um slightly older than yourself
um and has two grown-up children who I'm
assuming doesn't speak
Punjabi and I've noticed that your level
of English is is relatively basic is
there any particular reason that you've
chosen to marry this
lady in love with her and there was no
other reason
[Music]
to Mr Singh may say he's in love but it
takes more than that to qualify for
residency and his Welsh wife has yet to
be
quizzed at the restaurant in Liverpool
that's not looking good for the owner
the enforcement team has doubts about
another member of his St well just at
the moment so I'm just asking the
gentleman some very basic details about
the identity that he's presented me and
roughly how long he's been in the UK
maybe what his status is how long you
been in the
UK years two three
years what's happened with your
application application
finished who's speaking
Sani
cish the team interpreters when L
becomes how much does he actually get
paid for work in here
emplo yes
sir10 per
day can you ask him what documentation
he showed his employer that he was
allowed to work basically
no the owner pays no tax or national
insurance for this worker and gives him
only a fraction of the minimum wage
check the
finger I'm just going to check your
fingerprints okay team wants to find out
the worker status in the UK finger one
they scan his fingerprints and send them
for analysis to a national datab base
the results will come back in minutes
do you have any evidence that they have
right to work in the
UK I asked them for their you know
uh insurance number and on all all these
things right I'm just going to give you
a quick search around your headdress
okay the
lady and she was found working in the
kitchen he only came today we not
working in s
she was in the kitchen she was in the
kitchen but she she here she was wearing
an apron in the kitchen in the kit she
may just trying to make some n or
something like that I don't know for who
my I was not so I Cann answer the
question so she wasn't working she may
have been making
n list
fingerprint work
froma and is here illegally
it's listen you're
upset it's I'm arresting you on
suspicion of working illegally in the UK
okay you're not obliged to say anything
that you wish to do so AR offense if you
not mention when questioned something
would you L around in court anything you
do say may be given an Evidence okay
your safety mine okay you're a little
bit upset I'm going to place you in
cuffs you want to put your hands out in
front for me put your hands out in front
thank
you okay
at the end of the day he's LED them to
us he's employed them illegally he's put
us in a position now where we've got to
arrest him and put in
police this is a real cost of illegal
working people in tears whether it's
illegal people like this or legal people
who sometimes the businesses go to the
wall because some individuals undercut
them by thousands you know it all ends
in tear of somebody um unfortunately for
these people tonight some didn't tear
them they're going to end up in a night
in the cells but the very very least um
so yeah I'm going to go back in there
now I'm going to tell him about a
penalty he's first finding 10,000 P per
person at the end of the day you haven't
done your adequate checks you employed
people illegally which resulted now in
two possibly three people being
arrested we have people now detained in
the back of the van who I need to get to
the police station if you want to sign
it sign it if you don't want to sign it
I'll leave it and record it that you
haven't
signed without the passport of the woman
found working in the kitchen it's harder
to prove that she shouldn't have been
there but help
is you're you're the brother-in-law so
she's over here with a passport and Etc
would you be able to get hold of that
passport have you got it here yeah I got
her passport can I have a look please
yes sir thank
you yes will let's gra it from
him the woman's relative claims this was
her first time at the restaurant the
only reason she was only there to learn
how
to unless it's a very very unfortunate
night where she picks the only night
that we visit to be learning how to make
a curry in the kitchen that's very
unfortunate it is very unfortunate or
perhaps it's not the first night that
she's been in the kitchen that's I'm
sure I'm sure she just arrived we can
see that I know she arrived two weeks
ago two weeks ago but it is very
unfortunate um the enforcement team
don't believe her
she is removed back to India where we
going the man from Iraq was also sent
back
home the employer is fined
£20,000 in Delhi is the turn of the
Welsh bride to be
interviewed she must convinced the
immigration officers the marriage is
genuine or it will be the end of the
couple's dream to set up home in Wales
hello Evelyn
Rita thank you how are you you all right
everything good okay I'm nervous yeah
understandably everybody who sits on
that side of the chair always
is how are you finding uh living in
Punjab it's absolutely amazing I I truly
embraced India even before it came here
I've had lots of videos sent over so I
was able to wash all those and I knew
everybody by sight before I met them so
that was that was nice and I you know
how how do you think they've reacted
regards to you know um you you're from
the UK yes and uh you don't speak
Punjabi how how was the interaction well
you
know they very loving towards me and
they were very accepting of me from the
very beginning even when we were talking
and laughing and saying sasri girl on
the phone and you know things like that
so tell me a little bit about about how
both you two met in the UK I was out
walking my dog on the beach and on the
Breakwater and I saw J sitting on his
own and um I I thought I just said hello
you know and he said hello and he smiled
at me with his gorgeous smile and I
thought oh he's rather
gorgeous but he's very young slowly
slowly we got to know each other and I
helped him with his English and um we
just clicked you know we clicked
straight away how did you decide to get
married what was the you know who made a
decision did he propose well it wasn't a
romantic it wasn't a romantic setting at
all I I I'm I think we were in the
kitchen and
um we probably cuz he's been showing me
Indian cooking and how to make chapattis
and things like that so we probably I
think it was had a meal and sat down and
and he said do you think you would like
to marry me so I said yes I said yes
definite thank you great what would you
do and if there's a scenario where
unfortunately your sponsor doesn't get
entry clearance and cannot join you in
the UK are are you happy to stay in
India you do like it a lot here you know
his family I I like it a lot here and I
know his family but you know all my
family are in the UK my dog and my house
and my home and my two boys so really
you know living in India isn't an option
for me what what are you going to do
because if we refuse entry clearance are
are you going to stay or are you going
to go back well that's what it comes out
to
yeah I I I haven't really I haven't
thought about that to be
honest because I
thought I you know I just I thought
because we it's genuine relationship and
we love each other and we want to be
together that we might be lucky enough
to get a
visa and that's that's honestly the only
answer I can give you thank you thank
you very much thank thank you very
much I'm not going back without him all
right the immigration team in Delhi
process up to 1500 Visa applications
every
day officer John Spence is a key member
of the team it's his job to investigate
whether applications are credible rul
J rul Jen R Jen is applying for a 2-year
working tourist visa he must prove
tourism is the main reason for his
trip okay how long do you intend to stay
in the UK
2 years what do you intend to see him do
in the
UK such
as Birmingham Palace and Tower
Bridge okay what's Birmingham Palace and
why do you wish to see
it and it is worth seeing and I want to
see it so why can you only name me two
places that you wish to see in the UK um
one of which is not the correct name and
one of which you can't describe to me
what it
is officer Spence types up every answer
to provide a record of the
EV when I go on holiday I know exactly
what I want to see if I came to India
I'd say I want to see the Taj Mahal I'd
say I want to see the golden temple why
can't you tell me what you want to see
in the
UK England is very famous and many
places to see
that okay you've been off in a job doing
what theob
of so that I can cover my
expens officer Spence has heard enough
to make a
decision I'm not satisfied that you want
to enter the UK for a working holiday as
you have claimed or that you plan to
leave the UK at the end of your stay the
only thing you have managed to plan is a
part-time job and that suggests for me
that is your intention to St full-time
employment rather than to go to the UK
for tourism I mean he has to show that
the primary purpose of his visit is for
tourism um I'm afraid that this chap
hasn't done so this chap knows only two
things that to tell me about the UK one
of which is Burmingham Palace which
clearly doesn't exist other's tower
bridge and I'm not absolutely certain he
knows what that is um my suspicion
frankly is that this chap is going to go
there to the UK to work for 2 years at a
marketly reduced rate than employing the
same person in the UK with cost his
sponsor no redeeming features at all as
far as I can make out a completely
straightforward
refusal bad news for the wbe tourist but
will the newly wordss do any
better I I need a hug I need hugs oh
this is huge for us because I don't want
to go back to the UK without about my
husband when you love someone and you
used to being with them that's very
difficult it's not easy for officer
sadiki either he consults his boss Alex
Wy do you have any concerns about the
relationship to well um there is a
significant age difference and um you
know it's open to well you know
interpretation here but um I cannot from
the immigration rules say that there is
this is not a genuine marriage and I
satisfying the relationship subsists
well I I can be as satisfied as I can be
on paper and from the interview I can't
really say what's inside someone's heart
I do realize it's a bit of a sensitive
area and it is subject to
exploitation but uh given the
information you've given me I think
we're going to have to issue the Visa
okay just just do that let's do that
I'll go and tell them right now all
right thanks bye
[Music]
hi have a seat please please have a seat
thank
you um having assessed the application
and referred it um we've decided to
issue entry clearance and um we're going
to basically ask J to undertake a
medical check before we issue the
Visa um so that may take a little
while and um I hope you have a long
fruitful marriage apart from when I had
the children this is the happiest day of
my life and and a really good start for
both of us I hope your happiness
[Music]
lost so how do you
feel very excited and happy happy and
just so thankful and that they know they
believed us and our story is 100% true
and now we can do all the things that we
plan to do can't we we're going to teach
just to drive in the UK and uh study and
learn more English you know well it just
means everything you know it's our
future and um I know we'll have a good
future together
jaswin and his wife are now back in the
UK living together in Wales

Key Grammar Structures

  • It's estimated that up to 1 million people live or work illegally in the UK.

➔ Passive construction with dummy‑subject "it" + reported clause (It is estimated that …).

➔ The word "estimated" forms the passive voice: "It’s **estimated** that…"
