well hello I hope everyone's having a 00:02
good day I hope you're ready to learn 00:04
some English words and phrases about 00:06
tools I'll explain why I chose this 00:10
topic in just a little bit but uh we'll 00:13
get started in 34 seconds hopefully 00:15
everything is working 00:18
properly it's good to see all of you 00:19
it's fun to say hi to all of you I like 00:23
it when I have time to actually say hi 00:25
to everyone in the chat before we start 00:28
uh we'll get started in 20 seconds 00:30
sounds like everything is working 00:32
properly let me just get adjusted here 00:34
and we will start in 10 nine I'm not 00:38
going to countown seven six maybe I am 00:42
who knows four 3 2 1 well hello and 00:46
welcome to this English lesson about 00:52
tools tools are the things that we use 00:54
as human beings to make things or to fix 00:58
things tools are just really really 01:01
handy I hope you have some small tools 01:04
at home hopefully you at least have a 01:07
screwdriver and a wrench and uh a hammer 01:10
uh so that when something is broken or 01:13
when you need to put something together 01:16
you have the tools that you need to do 01:18
that in this lesson I will talk about 01:21
the names of all the tools the 01:23
vocabulary that you need to know but I'm 01:25
also going to talk about what verbs you 01:28
use with each of these tools you know 01:31
when you use a screwdriver you use it to 01:34
tighten or loosen a screw and so it's 01:36
important not just to know the name of 01:39
the tool but also the actions that go 01:41
with the tool so welcome to this English 01:44
lesson about tools and the verbs that go 01:47
with them well hey how's everybody doing 01:50
I hope you're having a good time hello 01:53
to all of the familiar faces in the chat 01:54
LLY LLY know that Arya Bost ho farbor 01:57
miy ke Park uh hockey Freddy wolf um who 02:02
did did I say LLY LLY already John wedge 02:07
Ralph uh it's good to see all of you 02:09
it's good to see all of you in the chat 02:12
Michael is here wand pra VOR Deni I'm 02:13
sure rand's in there somewhere um good 02:17
to see everybody if I forgot your name 02:19
uh sorry about that so A lesson about 02:21
tools and some of you know that my 02:24
lesson ideas come from my life so this 02:27
past week I've been working um not sure 02:30
how well you could see that photo but 02:33
I've been working on putting pavers down 02:35
uh by the front entrance of our house so 02:39
I'm about a third of the way I hope to 02:42
finish this today after the live stream 02:44
right now it's Shady there till about 02:48
1:00 that area is Shady so I hope to get 02:50
it done while it's still Shady my son 02:54
and I put down Co Stone and then we're 02:56
putting down a finer Stone and then 03:00
laying pavers on top of it so I'll I'll 03:01
give you a picture of it when it's 03:04
totally done uh but for now that is what 03:06
I am working on um anyways some details 03:10
please use the chat to have fun English 03:14
conversations with each other uh please 03:16
if you uh consider membership there is a 03:19
join button below you can click that and 03:21
it will give you more information um and 03:23
then uh please as you're listening try 03:25
to think and picture not just the tool 03:28
but the action so if I'm talking about a 03:32
hammer try to picture the action that's 03:34
happening as well anyways good to see 03:36
all of you um 41 words in this lesson 40 03:39
words so we better get started it'll 03:43
take almost the full hour with questions 03:46
so here we 03:49
go toolbox I thought I would start with 03:50
this one a toolbox is a great thing to 03:54
have you can use it to store your tools 03:56
you can use it to keep your tools in the 03:59
same place I actually have multiple tool 04:02
boxes I don't use them very well though 04:05
often when I use my tools I forget to 04:08
put them in the toolbox or put them back 04:11
in the toolbox but a toolbox is a very 04:14
handy thing to have it's very useful um 04:17
you can even lock some of them um 04:20
anyways I was saying I have multiples I 04:22
have one toolbox for my screwdrivers 04:25
another toolbox for wrenches 04:28
but as I said I'm not that good at 04:30
keeping my tools in the tool boxes 04:33
they're usually kind of left in the 04:35
places where I most recently worked but 04:38
you would use a toolbox to keep your 04:41
tools or to store your 04:43
tools a hammer so I thought I'd start 04:46
start with one of the most obvious tools 04:49
a hammer is used to hammer things so the 04:51
noun and the verb are the same or to hit 04:55
things or to pound things so if I have a 04:57
nail I can Hammer the nail into a piece 05:00
of wood I can hit the nail into the 05:03
piece of wood or I can pound the nail 05:06
when you use pound it kind of you saw my 05:09
arm go further it's like you're really 05:12
hitting the nail but a hammer is a tool 05:15
and it actually has two ends this type 05:19
of hammer the one end is used to hit a 05:21
nail the other end is used to pry a nail 05:24
out after sure you put it in probably 05:28
one of the most common tools I hope all 05:31
of you have a hammer 05:33
somewhere there's also something called 05:35
a sledgehammer let me say that again a 05:37
sledgehammer sledg Hammer it's used to 05:41
smash or pound things you wouldn't use a 05:44
sledgehammer to put in Nails it's just 05:48
too big a sledgehammer is very very 05:51
heavy and a sledgehammer is used for 05:54
instance you could pound found a post 05:58
into the ground um notice I'm using two 06:00
hands now if I'm using a smaller hammer 06:03
or a bigger 06:07
Sledgehammer uh I'm definitely going to 06:09
use two hands you can use it to smash 06:11
things let's say there's a wall in your 06:14
house and you don't want it anymore you 06:17
could use a sledgehammer to smash that 06:19
wall you could use it to get rid of that 06:22
wall I actually have this I just got 06:25
this yesterday this is a type of hammer 06:28
but it's called a rubber mallet um I 06:30
need this to kind of help put the pavers 06:32
in place the patio stones that I'm 06:35
putting down so that is a mallet kind of 06:38
another word for a type of 06:41
hammer Jackhammer so I've run a 06:44
jackhammer before um a jackhammer is a 06:47
um basically a mechanical hammer it has 06:51
an airline if that's the type you're 06:56
using and it goes 06:58
like hopefully that's not too loud for 07:01
you a jackhammer is used to demolish or 07:03
to break things you would never build 07:07
something with a jackhammer you use a 07:10
jackhammer let's say you had a sidewalk 07:12
and it was tilted and cracked you might 07:16
use a jackhammer to break the sidewalk 07:18
or to demolish the sidewalk so that you 07:21
can remove it but a jackhammer is 07:24
definitely in English we would say say 07:27
not for the faint of heart it's very 07:29
loud and it's very hard to control I've 07:32
used small jackhammers and large 07:35
jackhammers in my 07:37
life a saw so a saw can use can be used 07:39
to saw something you can saw a board in 07:43
half or you can cut a board in half a 07:45
saw is of course something it's a piece 07:48
of metal with all little Jagged teeth 07:51
and it goes 07:54
V when you cut so you can see this 07:55
gentleman here here he is deciding to 07:58
saw this board in half or to cut this 08:01
board in half obviously he needs it a 08:04
certain length so he's decided to cut 08:07
the board in 08:10
half then of course most of us just use 08:13
a power saw um we sometimes call this a 08:15
circular saw and you use this to saw or 08:18
to cut or to rip 08:21
so let me give you the difference 08:23
between cut and rip if I have a board 08:26
and I go like 08:28
this that's to cut but if I go this way 08:31
along the long side of the board that's 08:34
to rip you don't often rip a board with 08:37
a handsaw it takes a very long time um 08:40
but mostly we would just use the verb to 08:44
cut hey Bob can you cut me a piece of 08:46
wood uh that is 130 cm long could you 08:49
please cut me a piece of wood that is 3T 08:52
long by the way those aren't the same 08:55
130 CM isn't Tre feet but yes definitely 08:58
a power saw or circular saw is used to 09:01
cut things a hacks saww so we use this 09:04
to saw and to cut as well but usually we 09:08
use a hacksaw to cut pipe or maybe to 09:11
cut metal you wouldn't use this to cut 09:15
wood the teeth are very very tiny on a 09:18
hacksaw the only time I use a hacksaw is 09:22
to cut pipe so if you have a long pipe I 09:25
would use a haacks saww to cut the pipe 09:28
in half and of course you can saw the 09:31
pipe in half as 09:33
well and then a chainsaw so a 09:35
chainsaw you there's a like you pull it 09:38
to start it it's 09:41
like you use a chainsaw to chop down or 09:48
to cut down trees or simply to cut 09:52
things you don't usually use it to cut 09:56
wood or Lumber that you know you don't 09:59
have a piece of lumber and use a 10:02
chainsaw you use it usually 10:04
outside and you use it either to chop 10:06
down a tree to cut down a tree or to cut 10:09
logs um you don't use it for regular 10:12
wood um notice even though it's not an 10:15
axe we still say to chop down I'm going 10:19
to use the chainsaw to chop down a tree 10:21
and then when the tree starts to fall 10:25
you're supposed to yell timber 10:27
as the tree is falling down to warn 10:30
people that the tree is 10:33
falling so we talked about this in the 10:35
lesson about measurements a few weeks 10:37
ago this is either called a tape measure 10:39
or a measuring tape both names are 10:42
equally used and you use it to measure 10:44
things so if I needed a piece of wood I 10:47
actually did this yesterday Jen needed a 10:52
piece of wood to attach to our Market 10:54
canopy and it needed to be about 8 ft 10:57
long and so I used a tape measure to 10:59
measure a piece of wood I used a 11:03
measuring tape to measure a piece of 11:05
wood and then I cut it so it was exactly 11:07
the right 11:10
length a planer I don't ever use one of 11:12
these uh this is used to plain or to 11:15
smooth wood so if you have a piece of 11:18
wood and it's not perfectly smooth you 11:21
would use a planer to remove a really 11:24
small slice of wood so if there was a 11:28
piece of wood like this you would use a 11:31
planer to remove the pieces that were a 11:32
little bit too tall you would use it to 11:36
plain the wood or to smooth the 11:38
wood and then a screwdriver this is 11:42
probably next to the Hammer Hammer and 11:45
screwdriver are probably the two most 11:48
common tools this is used to tighten a 11:50
screw or to loosen a screw or simply to 11:54
turn a screw um by the way in English we 11:57
say righty tidy Lefty Loosey so it's a a 12:01
little thing you can remember so you 12:06
know which way to turn a screwdriver or 12:08
a wrench so righty tidy means if you 12:11
turn it to the right the screw will get 12:14
tighter if you turn it to the left it 12:17
will get looser so you use a screwdriver 12:18
to tighten to loosen or to turn you 12:22
could even 12:25
say you use it to put in screws you 12:26
could use the verb to put in I'm going 12:29
to use the screwdriver to put in some 12:31
screws that would be very common as well 12:34
um but yes I'm sure you have multiple 12:38
screwdrivers they have different tips in 12:41
uh my part of the world we call this 12:44
type of screwdriver a Phillips we have 12:46
Phillips and Flathead and Robertson 12:48
those are the three most common kind I 12:51
think the Robert Robertson screwdriver 12:53
is very common in Canada it's the square 12:56
tip 12:58
but yes 13:00
screwdriver and then wrench a wrench is 13:02
similar in the sense that you use it to 13:05
tighten and loosen things but you use it 13:07
to tighten and loosen bolts and nuts so 13:09
you have a bolt and then you put a nut 13:13
on the end and you turn the nut and you 13:15
can use a wrench to tighten that nut or 13:18
you can use it to loosen that nut as 13:21
well so you put one wrench on the bolt 13:24
head put the other wrench on the nut and 13:28
you turn it until it's super super tight 13:31
um my friend gave me a set of wrenches 13:34
for my birthday this year very nice I 13:37
was very happy with that gift very 13:39
cool uh hey let's do some questions 13:42
they're not showing up on the screen I'm 13:45
not sure why let me just check something 13:47
for a sec there they are let me get the 13:49
first question on the screen after I 13:51
have a sip of 13:53
water let's see here here we go from 13:55
Denny 13:58
wait no it's from know that my bad hello 14:02
Bob do you have a separate area for your 14:04
tools like a workshop with a workbench 14:06
vices Etc where you store them or where 14:09
do you usually keep them thanks Bob so I 14:11
will I will make a video of this at some 14:15
point in my machine shed what we also 14:17
call the drive shed that really big 14:20
building close to the road where I have 14:21
my tractors um I do have a workshop with 14:23
workbenches 14:27
now my son also uses that he runs a 14:29
lawnmowing business so he has all his 14:32
tools and I have all my tools we try not 14:35
to get them mixed up if we if I use his 14:37
tools I make sure I put them back but 14:40
yes I definitely have a vice an anvil 14:43
three workbenches it's a very nice place 14:46
to work and that's where I try to keep 14:49
all my tools I try to keep them all 14:52
there from Den hello Bob what's the 14:55
weirdest tool you've ever used what tool 14:57
tools of your trade as a teacher might 14:59
be useful in farming so the weirdest 15:00
tool I own is probably something called 15:03
a gear puller so a gear puller it has um 15:05
like three arms and you put it onto a 15:10
pulley or gear and then you tighten the 15:14
other end and it pulls it off the shaft 15:16
it's pretty technical description there 15:20
U what tools uh anything that measures 15:22
so teachers use rulers and measuring 15:25
tapes and on the Farm we use rulers and 15:27
measuring tapes as 15:30
well from rousin hello dear teacher Bob 15:32
how are you today I'm good rousin what 15:35
is your favorite tool kit brand have a 15:38
sunny weekend sir so I have 15:40
Mastercraft I have husky um I have 15:44
Craftsman it doesn't matter to me as 15:48
long as it's not cheap I don't like 15:50
cheap tools I tend to break cheap tools 15:53
um so those are the name brands in 15:57
Canada I also have a DeWalt cordless 16:00
drill very very very very nice 16:03
tool from Young hi Bob did you ever 16:07
build a tree house when you were a child 16:10
with your father does Canada have this 16:12
tradition like in the United 16:14
States I built a fort or not like a fort 16:16
and Treehouse are similar a fort's like 16:21
a little fun place to play um my dad and 16:23
I built a fort in the barn once above 16:26
love um the area where we prepared feed 16:29
for the cows I had a little fort up 16:31
there with a radio in it um but I did 16:33
build a treehouse with my cousins when I 16:36
was older um is it a tradition I know if 16:38
you have trees you might build a tree 16:42
fort at some point in time but uh I 16:44
wouldn't say it's a uh a super common 16:47
tradition many people do it though yes 16:50
for sure Lucas says hey Bob October Fest 16:52
takes place again in over one month do 16:55
you like it have you attended I have not 16:57
really like I've been to an Ontario 16:59
version I have not been to Germany to 17:02
experience it uh from Ram hi Bob not 17:05
only French teacher but also wrench 17:09
teacher are you familiar with the phrase 17:10
bike shed when you over dispute 17:12
unimportant details no I'm not familiar 17:14
with that phrase at all um but uh yes I 17:17
am I would like to say I'm handy with 17:22
tools but it's 17:24
more yeah I'm I I I get by with 17:27
tools from M hello Bob I hope you're 17:31
doing well as you seem to be I am do you 17:34
call them gadgets are tools and what is 17:36
the difference between them so a tool is 17:39
something like a screwdriver or a hammer 17:41
or a wrench a gadget is 17:44
more yeah is a little more complex like 17:47
when I talked about the gear puller the 17:50
tool I have to pull a gear or pulley 17:54
that's more of a gadget when it has 17:56
moving parts and it does one specific 17:58
task um I would say maybe but usually 18:02
tool we usually do uh Tool uh use tool 18:05
as the word from Peter good morning Mr 18:09
Bob how are you today I'm very excited 18:11
to watch your live stream today also 18:13
your topic is wonderful no question 18:14
thank you have a nice day I hope you do 18:16
too uh let's see 18:20
[Music] 18:22
here I don't know William how many tools 18:23
do you have in your home so we have 18:26
tools in the house we have a small set 18:29
of tools in the house you know a small 18:32
Hammer screwdrivers those kinds of 18:34
things um and then hundreds of tools 18:36
there are tools here from when my 18:40
parents own the farm so there's just 18:42
definitely tools 18:45
everywhere posum pibble says hi Bob the 18:47
bathroom light doesn't work there is 18:50
electricity in the house but I think 18:52
there is no electric current going to 18:53
the bathroom light how can I fix this 18:55
safely 18:58
fix it very very safely the first thing 18:59
you should get um is you should the 19:02
first thing you should get is you should 19:06
find something that detects whether 19:07
there is electricity in the socket or 19:09
Outlet before you work on it and then 19:13
make sure you turn off the breaker or 19:15
remove the fuse to that socket uh and 19:18
then I would just have a look once you 19:21
know how to do it safely make sure 19:24
there's no electricity there 19:26
um from tagal hello dear teacher Bob no 19:29
questions today just want to say I 19:31
really love sound effects done by you I 19:33
should work on them more um I maybe I 19:36
that's what I should do I should take a 19:39
class and become a professional uh sound 19:41
effects Creator maybe that's my uh maybe 19:44
that's my future hey we're going to get 19:47
back to the lesson after I have a sip of 19:49
water it's funny because kesar in the 19:53
chat says I'm positive that this is not 19:56
live it's it's just a pre-recorded video 19:58
no it's not a pre-recorded video in fact 20:01
um if you look here I'll show you if you 20:04
look here it is currently 20:08
8:49 oh they won't stay on the 20:11
screen 20:13
8:49 uh amm Eastern Standard Time August 20:15
16 20:20
2024 um the Olympics ended last week by 20:21
the way thanks to all of you from France 20:24
for hosting the Olympics um 20:26
but yeah this is definitely live kesar 20:29
um John wedge says gear pulley is very 20:33
handy to take off bearings yes it I like 20:35
that tool it is a handy tool okay let's 20:37
get back to the 20:40
lesson pipe wrench so this is a a wrench 20:43
that's adjustable you can spin part of 20:47
it to open and close it and you can use 20:50
it to tighten pipes when you put one 20:53
pipe into a fitting 20:57
you'll use a pipe wrench to tighten that 20:59
so you use this once again to tighten or 21:01
to loosen something and in this case a 21:04
pipe wrench is used to tighten and 21:07
loosen pipes um and I did forget to 21:09
mention there is something called an 21:13
adjustable wrench I don't have a picture 21:14
of that that's a handy uh wrench to have 21:17
as well because you can you can open and 21:20
close it so it's the right size but a 21:22
pipe wrench is used to tighten and to 21:25
loosen 21:28
pipes a crowbar so I think this has a 21:29
lot of different names I call it a 21:33
crowbar it's also called a pry bar it is 21:35
used to pry things if you had two pieces 21:38
of wood that were nailed together and 21:42
you wanted to get them apart you would 21:45
try to put the end of the pry bar 21:47
between them and then you would pry 21:50
that's the English verb we use you would 21:52
move the bar and pop open or separate 21:55
those two pieces of wood a very handy 21:59
tool to have generally when it has the 22:02
curved end I call it a crowbar if it's 22:05
just a bar um like the one I showed you 22:10
in my picture that's leaning against the 22:13
wall can we get back to that real fast 22:15
let's see how fast so you see that red 22:17
handled thing leaning against the wall 22:20
that's a pry bar um or what I would call 22:21
a pry bar whoa went too far bolt cutters 22:25
so you were asking about tools that 22:30
teachers and farmers use so at school we 22:33
have a set of bolt cutters in case a 22:36
student forgets the combination to their 22:39
lock or if someone puts the wrong lock 22:41
on a locker we use a bolt cutter to cut 22:44
the lock off but generally a bolt cutter 22:46
is used to cut actually you can cut wire 22:48
like metal wire or bolts or locks with 22:52
it and we just simply use to cut you 22:56
might say to snip you might use the bolt 22:59
cutters to snip some wire but uh 23:02
definitely a handy tool to have when you 23:05
squeeze the end of the bolt cutter um it 23:08
puts 23:11
enormous uh pressure on where the end is 23:13
closing like when you squeeze the one 23:16
end because of all the little lever 23:19
mechanisms it really uh cuts through a 23:21
lot of stuff yes a clamp a clamp is used 23:25
to clamp things or to hold things so if 23:29
you like making things out of wood and 23:32
you need to glue them together so you 23:35
put glue 23:38
like you put glue on and then you put 23:39
the two pieces of wood together you then 23:42
need to clamp them as the glue dries you 23:45
put on a clamp to hold the wood together 23:49
or you can say you clamp the wood 23:52
together so very handy tool to have you 23:55
can see that you can spin the end and it 23:58
closes and opens or you could say it 24:01
tightens and loosens as 24:03
well and this is a utility 24:07
knife just in the chat I see keevan say 24:11
oh I really thought it was pre-recorded 24:14
too but thank you anyway you're awesome 24:16
yes it's definitely not pre-recorded uh 24:18
this this is the real thing uh let's get 24:21
back though oh no that says your 24:24
students get the locks provided they are 24:26
provided 24:27
um but sometimes students will bring 24:29
their own and then um if the school 24:30
doesn't uh own the lock we can't figure 24:33
out how to open it if we own the lock we 24:36
have all the combinations we look at the 24:38
serial number but 24:40
yeah a utility knife so a utility knife 24:44
is interesting generally it has a 24:48
retractable blade so if you look at this 24:51
utility knife there's a little thing on 24:54
top you can slide and then the blade 24:57
will go in and out this is for safety 25:00
you use a utility knife uh to cut things 25:04
to carve things to scrape things there 25:07
are a lot of uses for a utility knife um 25:10
and then usually inside there's extra 25:13
blades so if you open it up there's a 25:16
little storage compartment where you can 25:19
have extra blades but a utility knife is 25:21
super handy you can use it to cut rope 25:24
you can use it to um cut little zip ties 25:27
off of things you can use it for many 25:30
many things and usually it has a 25:32
retractable blade for safety so when 25:35
you're done using it you can put the 25:38
blade back inside and then uh no one 25:39
will injure themselves safety glasses 25:43
hearing protection work gloves these are 25:47
all things that we wear to protect 25:49
ourselves so when you are doing um any 25:52
kind of work you want to protect your 25:56
you will wear goggles safety goggles or 25:58
safety glasses in fact on this 26:01
screen on the white background those are 26:05
safety goggles and on the blue 26:08
background I would call these safety 26:11
glasses these are things we wear to 26:13
protect our eyes when you're cutting or 26:16
grinding or snipping uh things can fly 26:18
at your face and you don't want 26:23
something to go in your eye so wear 26:25
safety glasses to protect your 26:28
eyes similarly when you are working with 26:31
uh different kinds of tools Power Tools 26:35
in particular it can be very loud and 26:37
you will wear some kind of hearing 26:40
protection don't have mine here I wear 26:42
the little tiny ones that you can put in 26:45
your ear but you can also wear these 26:47
large ones you wear these to protect 26:50
your hearing so you wear these to 26:53
protect your eyes and your eyesight you 26:55
wear these to protect your not really 26:58
your ears but your hearing you use those 27:01
to protect your hearing because 27:03
sometimes when you're cutting a piece of 27:06
wood with a power saw it's so loud it 27:08
can damage or hurt your ears and then 27:11
work gloves I always wear work gloves 27:15
when I was younger I didn't but it's 27:18
very common if you see me working on 27:20
something to see me wearing safety 27:23
glasses sometimes it I'm just wearing my 27:26
reading glasses as safety glasses 27:29
because it's hard for me to see close up 27:31
I'm usually wearing some kind of hearing 27:33
protection if it's loud and then gloves 27:35
because the last thing I want to have 27:38
happen is I don't want to hurt my hands 27:41
while I'm working on something I do not 27:44
enjoy that so you need to protect 27:47
yourself I also wear knee pads right now 27:49
when I'm laying pavers but I don't have 27:52
a picture of 27:54
those uh a square so a square is used to 27:56
square things up what I mean by this is 28:00
if you have a piece of wood and another 28:04
piece of wood where they come together 28:06
you want this to be a 90° angle 28:09
sometimes and in order to do that you 28:13
use what's called a square so you put a 28:16
square in the corner and then you know 28:19
it's a perfect 90° angle and then you 28:22
can nail it or screw it together we we 28:25
also use a square to Mark a piece of 28:28
wood before we cut it so if I have a 28:31
piece of wood I can lay the square 28:34
across and then draw a line so that I 28:36
can make sure I'm creating a 90° cut so 28:39
I should have added that you can use a 28:43
square to square up two pieces of wood 28:45
or to Mark a piece of wood with a pencil 28:48
so you know where to cut 28:51
it pliers very handy the this uh set of 28:54
pliers is actually called needlenose 28:59
pliers you use these to squeeze to twist 29:01
to tighten to loosen to cut Pliers are 29:03
very very handy I love a good pair of 29:07
pliers you can use a pair of pliers like 29:10
this to squeeze something together so 29:13
the ends come you can squeeze something 29:16
together you can twist something with 29:19
them you can if you have two wires you 29:20
can put the pliers on and then you can 29:23
twist the wires you can tighten 29:24
something you can loosen and then 29:26
there's actually a tiny little this pair 29:28
of pliers has a little cutting area 29:31
right at the base of most pairs of 29:34
pliers you can cut string or wire pliers 29:36
very very handy and similar to scissors 29:40
it's pliers um we always use the 29:43
plural um so you you can have a pair of 29:47
scissors a pair of pliers um etc etc and 29:49
a pair of pruners by the way um we use 29:52
pruners to prune to snip and to cut and 29:55
we use these for plants Jen uses pruners 29:58
to cut flowers I use pruners to prune my 30:02
trees you can use pruners to snip weeds 30:05
off in the garden although you should 30:08
pull them out by the roots but pruners 30:10
um look similar to pliers but they are 30:14
made like it's sharp the edge of a 30:17
pruner is very sharp it's made to cut 30:20
things to snip things to prune things 30:23
very handy be careful when you use 30:27
pruners wear 30:29
gloves ratchet so ratchets are cool this 30:31
ratchet has a socket on the end you 30:36
would put the socket onto a nut and then 30:39
a ratchet is neat because when you turn 30:41
one way it 30:44
goes and when you turn the other way it 30:45
tightens I'm not making a very good 30:50
ratchet sound and then you can flip a 30:52
little 30:54
switch and then it goes was the opposite 30:56
which way was I going before I can't 30:58
remember but now it will 31:00
loosen so it has a mechanism inside that 31:03
allows it to turn one way and then not 31:07
the other way I hopefully that made some 31:11
sense it is used in the same situation 31:13
as a wrench but sometimes it's just 31:16
handier to use a ratchet to tighten or 31:18
to loosen bolts and nuts so again you 31:21
put a socket on the end you find the 31:24
right side socket maybe you need a 12 mm 31:27
socket you put it on the end of the 31:30
ratchet use it to tighten and to loosen 31:31
bolts and then a chisel a chisel is used 31:35
for many things you can use it to Chisel 31:39
to carve to chip um so for instance if 31:41
you had a block of wood and you wanted 31:44
to make uh turn it into an owl you could 31:47
use a chisel with a hammer or just by 31:51
hand to kind of carve that wood if you 31:55
had a piece of stone you could chip 31:58
pieces of the stone off with a hammer 32:00
and chisel to make it a different shape 32:02
so you can use the verb to Chisel to 32:05
carve to chip whenever you are using a 32:08
chisel hey let's do members only chat 32:13
let me get a sip of water Ralph says now 32:15
I understand the meaning of the gear in 32:17
Ratchet and Clank oh yeah there you 32:19
go for 32:23
sure um 32:24
William says I like this class because 32:28
I'm learning new tools it's different to 32:29
my country new tools thanks for that Bob 32:31
yeah no problem uh let me get the 32:33
members only chat turned 32:35
on uh where do we go here and I just 32:39
want to say hi to the 266 people who are 32:42
currently watching that is awesome you 32:45
do not need to leave members only chat 32:48
is about 10 minutes long if you are a 32:50
member you can ask a question directly 32:52
in the chat and I will answer it and I 32:54
will also continue to answer tool 32:56
related questions from the question form 32:59
although this first one is not tool 33:03
related but I'll still put it up here uh 33:04
it says let me see 33:07
here from Anakin hi Bob have a good day 33:10
do you know what's the difference 33:13
between Cuisine and dish so I use 33:14
Cuisine to talk about a certain type of 33:17
food like do you like French cuisine um 33:19
and I don't use dish like dish I would 33:22
use more like um 33:26
yeah I don't use the word dish a lot 33:29
like it's a yummy dish like oh my mom 33:31
made stew and it was a yummy dish that's 33:33
how you would use that but I don't often 33:35
use the word dish to be honest know that 33:38
in the chat me Members chat when it 33:41
comes to fixing things on your farm or 33:44
in your house which do you prefer to do 33:46
Bob the ones in your house or on your 33:48
farm I think I like the farm ones better 33:51
um there are things I like to do and 33:54
things I don't like to do in the house 33:57
and outside I don't mind working with 34:00
wood or pavers or stone or gravel I 34:02
don't mind doing electrical work I 34:06
understand electricity I do not like 34:09
doing Plumbing like pipes and water and 34:11
water pressure that that doesn't 34:14
interest me like I I call a plumber if I 34:16
have a problem with that so definitely 34:20
Farm though I like outside I like fixing 34:22
things like if Jen needs a new door on 34:25
the chicken Coupe I like that kind of 34:29
work I can do that John wedge hello Bob 34:31
no question today just having fun with 34:33
your sound effects awesome uh Anna 34:35
takaha says thank you for the helpful 34:37
class I'm listening to you while washing 34:39
my plates very good you're multitasking 34:41
maranto is here good to see you maranto 34:44
hello he says Wanda says Hi teacher Bob 34:46
do you have special tools to fix your 34:49
car thank you that is another thing I do 34:50
not really do myself I will change 34:54
windshield WI ERS I will change 34:56
headlights um but everything else I have 35:00
done at a garage including like if I had 35:02
a flat tire I would put on a spare tire 35:06
or get the tire fixed but uh generally 35:08
I'm I'm 35:11
not like I could learn how to do it but 35:12
it doesn't interest me it's easier just 35:15
to get it fixed by someone John wedge 35:16
says don't forget to give a thumbs up 35:19
folks yes thank you for that John uh LLY 35:21
do you allow your children to use your 35:24
tools yes but they know they are 35:25
supposed to put the tool back but we all 35:28
uh sometimes forget to do that so uh yes 35:32
they are allowed to use the tools in 35:35
fact it's encouraged I like it when kids 35:37
learn to fix things know that says have 35:39
you ever had a project where after you 35:42
started it you reached the limits of 35:44
your craftsmanship and had to call in a 35:46
company/ 35:48
professional Yes actually I installed a 35:49
new stove top uh probably over 10 years 35:52
ago now I removed the old stove top um I 35:56
found the breaker in the basement I made 35:59
sure the electricity was off as I 36:01
mentioned earlier I removed the old 36:03
stovetop I installed a new one and I did 36:05
everything but I still had an 36:09
electrician come to check to make sure I 36:11
did it right because it's electrical 36:13
it's not gas or propane it's and so I 36:16
thought I and so he came and said 36:19
everything was good and he still charged 36:21
me $50 but that was fine it was worth 36:23
knowing I had done it right 36:25
um Freddy wolf Bob I'm pretty sure you 36:28
will soon have a phone call from a movie 36:30
director who wants to hire you for 36:32
making the sound effects of his next 36:33
Blockbuster I'm not sure we'll see know 36:36
that just a little fun question which 36:40
repair tasks are more likely to cause 36:41
you to get injured except for sinks 36:43
anytime I pry 36:46
something sometimes when you are prying 36:48
something with a crowbar or pry bar the 36:51
end will pop out and then this hand 36:53
might get smashed against the wall so 36:56
anytime I'm like exerting a lot of force 36:59
with a pry bar or even pulling a nail 37:04
out with a hammer that's when I'm most 37:06
likely to get injured that's why I 37:08
always wear gloves uh from LLY loly 37:10
thanks for your answer Bob no problem 37:14
Ralph the chainsaw was indeed close to 37:16
an original motor well done yeah 37:18
chainsaws there there's even more safety 37:21
equipment for chainsaws there's a visor 37:23
there's um special pants you can wear 37:26
that will stop the chainsaw from cutting 37:29
you um it's important to wear protective 37:31
gear when using a chainsaw Michael hello 37:34
Bob do you know how to weld I learned 37:37
stick welding in a bit from a pipeline 37:39
crew that camped on our farm once by the 37:41
way what's the difference between a 37:43
farmer and welder the welder knows he 37:44
can't 37:46
farm so yes I do know how to weld I do 37:47
own a welder I haven't used it for a 37:51
long time if I have any welding to do 37:53
and if it's portable I go and have and 37:57
see if Jen's dad can do it he's a very 38:00
good welder know that when you were 38:02
studying back then Bob did you know that 38:04
you would work in construction during 38:06
the semester breaks or was that a 38:07
spontaneous decision of yours when I was 38:09
16 I got a job a summer job doing 38:12
construction and I worked for that 38:16
person for a few Summers and then I 38:18
worked for my uncle for a few Summers it 38:19
was the best paying job where you could 38:22
get the most hours as a summer like as a 38:25
student worker so I could work N9 and 1 38:28
half hours a day and I could work 38:32
Saturdays and that's so there was lots 38:33
of work I was good at it my uncle had a 38:36
business and a friend of mine worked for 38:39
someone so initially I worked for the 38:41
same boss as my friend it wasn't 38:44
spontaneous it was very calculated I 38:45
paid like $3 an hour more than any other 38:48
job Freddy Wolf by the way the par 38:51
Olympics open ceremony will take place 38:53
August 28th and the games will last till 38:55
September 8th I hope that they will be 38:57
as amazing that the former one was 39:00
thanks for all Bob yes and thanks again 39:01
to everyone in France for hosting the 39:03
Olympics and the paral Olympics 39:05
hopefully everything goes well no that 39:06
says thanks for your answer no problem 39:09
um let's get another question on the 39:13
screen and it's weird when I switch 39:16
doesn't pop up right away and then all 39:20
of the sudden it does pop up or do I 39:22
have to go oh that's what I have to do 39:24
from hockey 39:26
did you want to be an engineer when you 39:27
were young because you are very familiar 39:29
with tools and mechanical things I guess 39:31
have a great day 39:33
no no that never really interested me um 39:34
maybe an architect a little bit but not 39:39
not an engineer I I like fixing things 39:42
and Building Things but not enough for 39:44
it to be my 39:47
job from Tommy I'm going to arrive in 39:49
Canada next week very cool in Canadian 39:52
culture how could we get a part-time job 39:54
should I go directly to the business and 39:56
ask for this look for Help Wanted signs 39:58
close to where you are living so often a 40:02
business will put a sign in the window 40:05
that says help wanted and it means they 40:06
are hiring and then the other option 40:09
would be to there might be a job bank or 40:11
a Community Job Center near you and they 40:15
might have a list of jobs that you could 40:17
look for uh from the chat ke Park says 40:20
hi Bob would you always organize your 40:22
tools or just put them out in your 40:24
garage I try to organize them but as I 40:26
mentioned before I'm not that good at 40:30
keeping things organized it's very 40:33
tricky um oops Adam hello Bob in Canada 40:36
the students can use their electronic 40:39
Tools in school in my country the 40:41
government wants to ban the electronic 40:43
Tools in school for students 40:44
thanks in my school and in most schools 40:47
I think you're talking about phones 40:50
right uh in my school if you're in a 40:52
class where you you're learning to make 40:56
videos you can have your phone uh in 40:58
most other classes you can't have your 41:00
phone that's that's kind of been that 41:03
way for a few years now at my school and 41:05
other schools are starting to do that as 41:07
well you can use your phone at 41:09
lunchtime we might ban 41:13
them we might ban them completely at 41:16
some point but uh so far um it's okay to 41:19
use them in your free time okay let's 41:23
see here let me turn off members only 41:26
chat 41:29
and we will get back to the lesson in a 41:31
moment let me do 41:33
this let me check to see if there are 41:35
any last members 41:38
questions John wedge says hey Bob by the 41:40
way I'll soon be using tools to set up 41:42
the crib and children's things yes it's 41:45
handy when you buy things like that 41:47
sometimes they come with a little 41:49
toolkit so you have all the tools that 41:51
you need to actually do it okay where 41:54
did we leave off everyone were we on 41:57
chisel I think we were let me have 42:00
another sip of 42:01
water and then we will get started on 42:05
the lesson again an axe an axe is used 42:07
to chop to chop down to cut it's a very 42:11
difficult tool to use like a chainsaw is 42:15
easier uh to use than an axe um sorry an 42:17
axe is easy to learn to use but it's 42:22
very physically demanding like you need 42:26
a lot of muscles to use an axe but you 42:28
can use an axe to chop down a 42:30
tree you can use an axe uh to cut up 42:32
some logs whatever you need to do a 42:36
level when you build things you want 42:40
them to be square so you use a square to 42:43
make 90° but you also want them to be 42:47
level what we mean by level is if you 42:51
hang a picture on the wall and it might 42:54
be a little crooked you could use a 42:56
level it has a little bubble inside of 42:59
air in liquid and as you move the 43:02
picture with the level on top eventually 43:04
the bubble will move between two lines 43:07
and then you know it's perfectly level 43:10
so again I'm try to use my hands here 43:13
crooked crooked and right in the middle 43:16
level and you would use a tool like this 43:19
to make sure things are leveled it's 43:22
called a level you use it to level 43:24
things drill cordless drill and you use 43:28
it to drill or to make a hole um I 43:31
picked a really bad picture though 43:34
because this guy's actually using the 43:36
drill to put screws in he's not drilling 43:38
a hole but uh Hey if you watch Jen's 43:41
video that's coming out this Sunday I do 43:44
drill some holes in that but uh you 43:46
would just call it a drill or a cordless 43:48
drill so you have drills that plug into 43:51
the wall but you have drills with 43:54
batteries so drill is the general term 43:55
and then cordless drill would be a drill 43:58
that has a battery use it to drill use 44:01
it to make a hole obviously you can also 44:03
use it to put in screws if you need 44:06
to jigsaw so a slightly different kind 44:10
of saw the blade goes up and down really 44:13
fast in fact it's similar in a way 44:16
to like it's similar to a hacksaw in 44:20
that sense although you can use it to 44:23
cut wood if if you need to but uh a 44:26
jigsaw is a very cool tool because as 44:29
you cut you can turn when you use a 44:32
circular saw or a power saw you have to 44:36
cut straight but with a jig saw you can 44:39
kind of like follow a curved line if you 44:42
need to a sander we like things to be 44:46
smooth when we build them out of wood 44:49
and sometimes even when it's made out of 44:52
metal a sander has sandpaper on it 44:54
that's 44:58
really like rough paper with actually 44:59
has sand glued to it and it moves really 45:02
fast so a sander would be 45:05
like so it's moving really really fast 45:09
in one direction or many directions and 45:12
then it basically removes a tiny layer 45:15
from the wood or metal to make it very 45:18
very 45:21
smooth and you use it to sand or too 45:23
smooth a ladder is used to climb so if 45:26
you need to get up somewhere you would 45:29
use a ladder to climb to climb up or to 45:31
get up somewhere those would be all the 45:35
words you could use you can see this 45:36
person they leaned a ladder against the 45:38
front of their house now they can climb 45:41
the ladder to maybe paint or clean 45:43
something or whatever they need to 45:46
do and then we have a step ladder so 45:50
this ladder is one piece you need to 45:53
lean it trying to pretend that's the 45:55
house you need to lean it against the 45:59
house a step ladder you can set up and 46:00
then you can climb one side so a step 46:04
ladder is handy because you do not need 46:07
to lean the step ladder against a wall 46:09
you can just simply set up the ladder 46:12
and then climb the step ladder by the 46:15
way we would just call this a ladder as 46:17
well like if someone said to you hey can 46:19
you grab that ladder they don't always 46:22
say step ladder unless there's two 46:25
ladders then you would want to specify 46:27
which ladder the step ladder please a 46:30
vice so a vice is a 46:33
device a vise is a device that's used to 46:36
hold or to squeeze things so when you 46:40
have a vice you can turn the end and 46:43
then it comes together and so you could 46:46
put a piece of wood in and then tighten 46:48
it to hold that piece of wood and then 46:51
you could drill something you could 46:53
drill the wood or cut the wood or um 46:55
pound things into the wood you could do 46:58
many many different things but a vice is 47:00
used to hold or squeeze things I do have 47:03
a vice in my machine shed it's very 47:06
handy a visce is a very handy tool to 47:08
have Sor I have a fly 47:12
here an anvil so an anvil is 47:13
something it's just a big heavy piece of 47:17
hard metal that you can use when like if 47:21
you have a hammer and you want to 47:25
flatten something you would lay it on 47:27
the Anvil and then you would hit it 47:30
repeatedly with the hammer um maybe you 47:32
want to bend something you might put it 47:35
on the Anvil and then slowly hit it as 47:37
you turn it to bend it so an anvil it 47:40
doesn't actually do anything but it's a 47:44
surface that you use to shape or flatten 47:47
or curve or bend something I also have 47:50
an anvil it's the Anvil my dad bought 47:53
many many years ago it's it's huge it's 47:56
very cool U I'll make a video at some 47:59
point showing you my machine shed and 48:01
you will see the 48:05
Anvil a wheelbarrow a wheelbarrow is 48:06
used to wheel things around if I fill my 48:09
wheelbarrow with stone I could say to my 48:12
son hey can you wheel that behind the 48:14
barn and dump it oh you also dump a 48:16
wheelbarrow so you can wheel and then 48:19
dump hopefully you're understanding my 48:22
actions there um so a wheelbarrow is a 48:24
little cart with one wheel on the front 48:27
and two handles on the back and then a 48:29
place to put stuff and you can use it to 48:31
wheel things to different places on your 48:34
property you can use it to carry things 48:36
let's say you had a lot of branches that 48:39
fell off a tree you could uh chop up the 48:42
branches uh with your chainsaw and put 48:45
them in your wheelbarrow and then you 48:47
could wheel them to a different place 48:49
and uh then you could dump 48:51
them a paintbrush and a paint roller you 48:53
use a paintbrush to paint or to brush 48:57
you use a paint roller to paint or to 49:00
roll so if you don't like the color of 49:02
the walls in your house you can use a 49:05
paintbrush to paint the walls you can 49:07
use the paintbrush to brush on some 49:09
paint maybe I should add the word on to 49:12
that verb or you might use a paint 49:14
roller a paint roller is just really 49:17
wide and it turns so you can put more 49:19
paint on uh than you can with a 49:22
paintbrush um we usually paint the 49:26
corners and around the doors with a 49:29
paintbrush and then we usually roll 49:31
paint on the rest of the room with a 49:34
paint roller it's just faster that way a 49:36
shovel so a shovel there are many 49:40
different types of shovel shovels you 49:42
use a shovel to shovel to dig so the 49:45
difference being if I have a pile of 49:49
stone I can shovel the stone into the 49:51
wheelbarrow okay but if there if 49:54
I'm out in my yard I can dig a hole in 49:59
the ground okay so shovel means simply 50:03
to move stuff like you can shovel some 50:05
Stone from one place to another but when 50:08
you dig you're actually making a hole in 50:10
the ground that would be the difference 50:13
between to shovel and to 50:16
dig to rake or a rake so this is a rake 50:18
we would might we might call this a 50:23
garden rake by the way this is a leaf 50:25
rake or fan rake we would call this a 50:27
garden rake or just a rake you use it to 50:30
rake things like when you pull a rake it 50:33
kind of gathers whatever's on the 50:36
surface um you can also use it to level 50:39
things out so in my job right now I'm 50:41
using a rake to level out Stone okay but 50:44
you could rake Stone you could rake dirt 50:48
you can um whenever you need to just 50:51
rake or gather or level something you 50:55
can use a rake and then a leaf rake or 50:57
fan rake this is a special type of rake 51:00
used mostly for cleaning up leaves um 51:02
people often in this part of the world 51:06
will rake their leaves in the fall um 51:08
when you have a rake like this it's very 51:12
light you could not use this for stone 51:14
it's it's plastic and it's not very 51:17
strong but it is perfect for raking 51:20
leaves if you need to rake leaves that 51:23
that that is the kind of rake you would 51:26
want a leaf rake or fan 51:28
rake hey one last picture let's make 51:31
this 51:34
bigger so yes this is my current 51:35
project how big can I make 51:38
this I'll put that in the middle of the 51:41
screen um that's where I'm going to be 51:43
today that's where I'm going to go I'm 51:45
going to go 51:47
outside uh and I'm going to finish that 51:49
job right after this live stream 51:51
hopefully it doesn't take too long I do 51:53
have help by the way um couple of my 51:55
kids will be helping um and we um we're 51:57
using the tractor to move the pavers not 52:01
the wheelbarrow so it's actually not too 52:05
hard we just load them in the tractor 52:07
and drive them over but anyways thanks 52:09
for watching everybody hope you uh were 52:12
able to learn some things oh wait do I 52:14
have to do questions yet what am I doing 52:15
let me get what's left 52:17
here okay three more questions Hobart hi 52:20
Bob have a nice day 52:23
I I never you have been a farmer in 52:25
childhood used a lot of tools to plant 52:28
the plants but I don't know the name of 52:30
the tools in English oh I see I was a 52:31
farmer when I was a kid and I used a lot 52:34
of tools to plant the plants but I don't 52:36
know the name of the tools in English 52:38
well hopefully you know some of them now 52:39
there are a lot more gardening and 52:42
farming tools I could do another lesson 52:44
on that at some point uh we'll see o hi 52:46
what is the difference between scissors 52:51
pruners and Snips so 52:53
for me scissors cut paper pruners cut 52:56
branches and um stems of plants and 53:02
Snips are used to cut metal so if you 53:06
have like really thin metal you can use 53:09
Snips we sometimes call them tin snips 53:11
so for me in my part of the world in 53:14
English scissors cut paper and other 53:17
paper type things paper string like you 53:20
would use scissors in a house pruners 53:23
are for plants and Snips are for cutting 53:25
really really thin 53:28
metal from Bridget do you also need an 53:31
examination or certificate to cut huge 53:34
trees and how to handle safely the 53:36
motors saw as a farmer I am allowed to 53:38
have a chainsaw and chop down a tree if 53:40
I go to chop down a tree in town I think 53:43
I would need to have some I I think 53:47
there are laws I'm not 100% sure though 53:50
but as a farmer I can do whatever I I 53:53
want I am free to do what I 53:56
want uh from Ismail hi Bob could you 54:00
tell me please is entrance way used only 54:03
for the area inside a building's 54:05
entrance or can it also refer to the 54:06
space outside the front door thank you 54:08
so interestingly 54:12
enough if you look at that door I call 54:15
that the entrance to my house I could 54:19
also call it the entrance 54:22
way when I go inside that door I'm 54:23
standing in the entrance way to my house 54:26
so it can be used for me I actually use 54:29
it for both the outside and inside it's 54:32
by the front entrance that can mean if I 54:35
say my keys are by the front entrance it 54:38
can mean inside or outside but close to 54:41
the door but I would call this the 54:44
entrance way oh the package was by the 54:46
entrance way or the package is in the 54:48
entrance way both would work for me it 54:50
might be different in other parts of the 54:53
English speaking world but uh that's how 54:54
it works for me hey that's it I'm going 54:57
to say bye bye 55:00
everyone I hope you have a good day bye 55:04
to John wedge Pedro hoaky ke Park Fatima 55:06
o vtor jezen LLY LLY I know if I scroll 55:10
back bye to uh Freddy wolf know 55:15
that uh Oleg G gerilla Runner lots of 55:19
fun names there know that says thanks 55:23
for the great lesson Bob it was awesome 55:25
awesome hanging around with you I wish 55:26
you and your family a wonderful day and 55:28
a pleasant weekend enjoy it and remember 55:29
to relax a bit oh and I think I will do 55:31
that know that but I think you also know 55:33
that also further back said could you 55:36
give my regards to Dave the Canadian Bob 55:37
it would be cool to see WR him here 55:39
again sometime but I I'm sure he's super 55:41
busy I do not see Dave very often I 55:43
haven't seen Dave for a long time but if 55:46
I do run into him I will pass that on uh 55:48
let's see here Michael says thank you 55:52
for the amazing lesson no problem Leo 55:54
says by CK Chen uh sterk says 55:55
thanks uh Ismail says thank you Bob 55:59
thanks for the lesson says Fatima bye 56:02
says haki yes bye to everyone have a 56:05
good weekend this was fun remember this 56:08
lesson will come out in a shorter 56:10
version in a couple days you should 56:12
watch it it's good because it helps you 56:14
remember everything you have heard and 56:16
everything you have learned repetition 56:18
is important for remembering vocabulary 56:20
um so you don't have to watch the whole 56:23
lesson but you should probably listen to 56:26
it and if you can understand it you can 56:28
even speed it up a bit that's helpful as 56:31
well but yes do do that and uh I will 56:33
see you Tuesday with another English 56:36
lesson and if you didn't watch this past 56:38
Tuesday's lesson I'm in a barrel you 56:39
should go watch it it's on prepositions 56:42
of place I tried to make it as funny and 56:44
entertaining as possible I think you 56:47
will enjoy it in fact I will get you a 56:49
link for that give me one second 56:51
here um where do I go for that I click 56:54
here I click here I click here I click 56:58
here and then there we 57:03
go 57:09
um now I think I did it right here we go 57:14
here 57:19
is I have a different keyboard here here 57:23
cuz we set this computer up for Jen to 57:26
edit it's about prep so you probably 57:29
hear the loud 57:33
keyboard than you I can't type at 57:37
all it's like one of my kids's old 57:41
gaming keyboards it has 57:44
really loud keys so but anyways I should 57:46
finish this off uh bye everybody have a 57:51
good day um 57:54
Keen says please make a video about the 57:56
difference between W could and make I 57:57
will try sometime but that gets a little 57:59
tricky um oh and John wedge says and 58:02
follow Jen's Channel as 58:05
well um that 58:07
is I'll get a link for that as well if 58:11
people are 58:14
interested um let's see here Jen's 58:17
flower farming 58:21
Channel um 58:24
um I'm uh going overtime now don't you 58:30
guys have to get to work or enjoy 58:33
yourself so there you go um if you want 58:36
a uh English lesson on prepositions of 58:38
place uh you can see the link right 58:40
there I will pin it and if you are 58:43
interested in Jen's Channel about flower 58:45
farming it's also uh linked right there 58:47
I'll put that in 58:50
again if if you go to Jen's Channel only 58:54
go if you're interested in farming and 58:58
flowers there you won't learn a lot of 59:00
English it's a lot more Beauty than it 59:02
is actual uh talking Jen likes to show 59:06
the process of growing flowers and some 59:09
people have found it quite enjoyable to 59:12
follow along but anyways um and I'll put 59:14
a link to Jen's Channel Below in the 59:16
comments as well so anyways thanks for 59:18
watching everybody see you I'm going to 59:20
go uh work I think it'll take me four 59:22
hours I'll post a picture on the 59:25
Community page when I'm 59:27
done let me see I'll see maybe I will 59:29
we'll see have a good weekend uh bye 59:32

Lyrics & Translation

[English]
well hello I hope everyone's having a
good day I hope you're ready to learn
some English words and phrases about
tools I'll explain why I chose this
topic in just a little bit but uh we'll
get started in 34 seconds hopefully
everything is working
properly it's good to see all of you
it's fun to say hi to all of you I like
it when I have time to actually say hi
to everyone in the chat before we start
uh we'll get started in 20 seconds
sounds like everything is working
properly let me just get adjusted here
and we will start in 10 nine I'm not
going to countown seven six maybe I am
who knows four 3 2 1 well hello and
welcome to this English lesson about
tools tools are the things that we use
as human beings to make things or to fix
things tools are just really really
handy I hope you have some small tools
at home hopefully you at least have a
screwdriver and a wrench and uh a hammer
uh so that when something is broken or
when you need to put something together
you have the tools that you need to do
that in this lesson I will talk about
the names of all the tools the
vocabulary that you need to know but I'm
also going to talk about what verbs you
use with each of these tools you know
when you use a screwdriver you use it to
tighten or loosen a screw and so it's
important not just to know the name of
the tool but also the actions that go
with the tool so welcome to this English
lesson about tools and the verbs that go
with them well hey how's everybody doing
I hope you're having a good time hello
to all of the familiar faces in the chat
LLY LLY know that Arya Bost ho farbor
miy ke Park uh hockey Freddy wolf um who
did did I say LLY LLY already John wedge
Ralph uh it's good to see all of you
it's good to see all of you in the chat
Michael is here wand pra VOR Deni I'm
sure rand's in there somewhere um good
to see everybody if I forgot your name
uh sorry about that so A lesson about
tools and some of you know that my
lesson ideas come from my life so this
past week I've been working um not sure
how well you could see that photo but
I've been working on putting pavers down
uh by the front entrance of our house so
I'm about a third of the way I hope to
finish this today after the live stream
right now it's Shady there till about
1:00 that area is Shady so I hope to get
it done while it's still Shady my son
and I put down Co Stone and then we're
putting down a finer Stone and then
laying pavers on top of it so I'll I'll
give you a picture of it when it's
totally done uh but for now that is what
I am working on um anyways some details
please use the chat to have fun English
conversations with each other uh please
if you uh consider membership there is a
join button below you can click that and
it will give you more information um and
then uh please as you're listening try
to think and picture not just the tool
but the action so if I'm talking about a
hammer try to picture the action that's
happening as well anyways good to see
all of you um 41 words in this lesson 40
words so we better get started it'll
take almost the full hour with questions
so here we
go toolbox I thought I would start with
this one a toolbox is a great thing to
have you can use it to store your tools
you can use it to keep your tools in the
same place I actually have multiple tool
boxes I don't use them very well though
often when I use my tools I forget to
put them in the toolbox or put them back
in the toolbox but a toolbox is a very
handy thing to have it's very useful um
you can even lock some of them um
anyways I was saying I have multiples I
have one toolbox for my screwdrivers
another toolbox for wrenches
but as I said I'm not that good at
keeping my tools in the tool boxes
they're usually kind of left in the
places where I most recently worked but
you would use a toolbox to keep your
tools or to store your
tools a hammer so I thought I'd start
start with one of the most obvious tools
a hammer is used to hammer things so the
noun and the verb are the same or to hit
things or to pound things so if I have a
nail I can Hammer the nail into a piece
of wood I can hit the nail into the
piece of wood or I can pound the nail
when you use pound it kind of you saw my
arm go further it's like you're really
hitting the nail but a hammer is a tool
and it actually has two ends this type
of hammer the one end is used to hit a
nail the other end is used to pry a nail
out after sure you put it in probably
one of the most common tools I hope all
of you have a hammer
somewhere there's also something called
a sledgehammer let me say that again a
sledgehammer sledg Hammer it's used to
smash or pound things you wouldn't use a
sledgehammer to put in Nails it's just
too big a sledgehammer is very very
heavy and a sledgehammer is used for
instance you could pound found a post
into the ground um notice I'm using two
hands now if I'm using a smaller hammer
or a bigger
Sledgehammer uh I'm definitely going to
use two hands you can use it to smash
things let's say there's a wall in your
house and you don't want it anymore you
could use a sledgehammer to smash that
wall you could use it to get rid of that
wall I actually have this I just got
this yesterday this is a type of hammer
but it's called a rubber mallet um I
need this to kind of help put the pavers
in place the patio stones that I'm
putting down so that is a mallet kind of
another word for a type of
hammer Jackhammer so I've run a
jackhammer before um a jackhammer is a
um basically a mechanical hammer it has
an airline if that's the type you're
using and it goes
like hopefully that's not too loud for
you a jackhammer is used to demolish or
to break things you would never build
something with a jackhammer you use a
jackhammer let's say you had a sidewalk
and it was tilted and cracked you might
use a jackhammer to break the sidewalk
or to demolish the sidewalk so that you
can remove it but a jackhammer is
definitely in English we would say say
not for the faint of heart it's very
loud and it's very hard to control I've
used small jackhammers and large
jackhammers in my
life a saw so a saw can use can be used
to saw something you can saw a board in
half or you can cut a board in half a
saw is of course something it's a piece
of metal with all little Jagged teeth
and it goes
V when you cut so you can see this
gentleman here here he is deciding to
saw this board in half or to cut this
board in half obviously he needs it a
certain length so he's decided to cut
the board in
half then of course most of us just use
a power saw um we sometimes call this a
circular saw and you use this to saw or
to cut or to rip
so let me give you the difference
between cut and rip if I have a board
and I go like
this that's to cut but if I go this way
along the long side of the board that's
to rip you don't often rip a board with
a handsaw it takes a very long time um
but mostly we would just use the verb to
cut hey Bob can you cut me a piece of
wood uh that is 130 cm long could you
please cut me a piece of wood that is 3T
long by the way those aren't the same
130 CM isn't Tre feet but yes definitely
a power saw or circular saw is used to
cut things a hacks saww so we use this
to saw and to cut as well but usually we
use a hacksaw to cut pipe or maybe to
cut metal you wouldn't use this to cut
wood the teeth are very very tiny on a
hacksaw the only time I use a hacksaw is
to cut pipe so if you have a long pipe I
would use a haacks saww to cut the pipe
in half and of course you can saw the
pipe in half as
well and then a chainsaw so a
chainsaw you there's a like you pull it
to start it it's
like you use a chainsaw to chop down or
to cut down trees or simply to cut
things you don't usually use it to cut
wood or Lumber that you know you don't
have a piece of lumber and use a
chainsaw you use it usually
outside and you use it either to chop
down a tree to cut down a tree or to cut
logs um you don't use it for regular
wood um notice even though it's not an
axe we still say to chop down I'm going
to use the chainsaw to chop down a tree
and then when the tree starts to fall
you're supposed to yell timber
as the tree is falling down to warn
people that the tree is
falling so we talked about this in the
lesson about measurements a few weeks
ago this is either called a tape measure
or a measuring tape both names are
equally used and you use it to measure
things so if I needed a piece of wood I
actually did this yesterday Jen needed a
piece of wood to attach to our Market
canopy and it needed to be about 8 ft
long and so I used a tape measure to
measure a piece of wood I used a
measuring tape to measure a piece of
wood and then I cut it so it was exactly
the right
length a planer I don't ever use one of
these uh this is used to plain or to
smooth wood so if you have a piece of
wood and it's not perfectly smooth you
would use a planer to remove a really
small slice of wood so if there was a
piece of wood like this you would use a
planer to remove the pieces that were a
little bit too tall you would use it to
plain the wood or to smooth the
wood and then a screwdriver this is
probably next to the Hammer Hammer and
screwdriver are probably the two most
common tools this is used to tighten a
screw or to loosen a screw or simply to
turn a screw um by the way in English we
say righty tidy Lefty Loosey so it's a a
little thing you can remember so you
know which way to turn a screwdriver or
a wrench so righty tidy means if you
turn it to the right the screw will get
tighter if you turn it to the left it
will get looser so you use a screwdriver
to tighten to loosen or to turn you
could even
say you use it to put in screws you
could use the verb to put in I'm going
to use the screwdriver to put in some
screws that would be very common as well
um but yes I'm sure you have multiple
screwdrivers they have different tips in
uh my part of the world we call this
type of screwdriver a Phillips we have
Phillips and Flathead and Robertson
those are the three most common kind I
think the Robert Robertson screwdriver
is very common in Canada it's the square
tip
but yes
screwdriver and then wrench a wrench is
similar in the sense that you use it to
tighten and loosen things but you use it
to tighten and loosen bolts and nuts so
you have a bolt and then you put a nut
on the end and you turn the nut and you
can use a wrench to tighten that nut or
you can use it to loosen that nut as
well so you put one wrench on the bolt
head put the other wrench on the nut and
you turn it until it's super super tight
um my friend gave me a set of wrenches
for my birthday this year very nice I
was very happy with that gift very
cool uh hey let's do some questions
they're not showing up on the screen I'm
not sure why let me just check something
for a sec there they are let me get the
first question on the screen after I
have a sip of
water let's see here here we go from
Denny
wait no it's from know that my bad hello
Bob do you have a separate area for your
tools like a workshop with a workbench
vices Etc where you store them or where
do you usually keep them thanks Bob so I
will I will make a video of this at some
point in my machine shed what we also
call the drive shed that really big
building close to the road where I have
my tractors um I do have a workshop with
workbenches
now my son also uses that he runs a
lawnmowing business so he has all his
tools and I have all my tools we try not
to get them mixed up if we if I use his
tools I make sure I put them back but
yes I definitely have a vice an anvil
three workbenches it's a very nice place
to work and that's where I try to keep
all my tools I try to keep them all
there from Den hello Bob what's the
weirdest tool you've ever used what tool
tools of your trade as a teacher might
be useful in farming so the weirdest
tool I own is probably something called
a gear puller so a gear puller it has um
like three arms and you put it onto a
pulley or gear and then you tighten the
other end and it pulls it off the shaft
it's pretty technical description there
U what tools uh anything that measures
so teachers use rulers and measuring
tapes and on the Farm we use rulers and
measuring tapes as
well from rousin hello dear teacher Bob
how are you today I'm good rousin what
is your favorite tool kit brand have a
sunny weekend sir so I have
Mastercraft I have husky um I have
Craftsman it doesn't matter to me as
long as it's not cheap I don't like
cheap tools I tend to break cheap tools
um so those are the name brands in
Canada I also have a DeWalt cordless
drill very very very very nice
tool from Young hi Bob did you ever
build a tree house when you were a child
with your father does Canada have this
tradition like in the United
States I built a fort or not like a fort
and Treehouse are similar a fort's like
a little fun place to play um my dad and
I built a fort in the barn once above
love um the area where we prepared feed
for the cows I had a little fort up
there with a radio in it um but I did
build a treehouse with my cousins when I
was older um is it a tradition I know if
you have trees you might build a tree
fort at some point in time but uh I
wouldn't say it's a uh a super common
tradition many people do it though yes
for sure Lucas says hey Bob October Fest
takes place again in over one month do
you like it have you attended I have not
really like I've been to an Ontario
version I have not been to Germany to
experience it uh from Ram hi Bob not
only French teacher but also wrench
teacher are you familiar with the phrase
bike shed when you over dispute
unimportant details no I'm not familiar
with that phrase at all um but uh yes I
am I would like to say I'm handy with
tools but it's
more yeah I'm I I I get by with
tools from M hello Bob I hope you're
doing well as you seem to be I am do you
call them gadgets are tools and what is
the difference between them so a tool is
something like a screwdriver or a hammer
or a wrench a gadget is
more yeah is a little more complex like
when I talked about the gear puller the
tool I have to pull a gear or pulley
that's more of a gadget when it has
moving parts and it does one specific
task um I would say maybe but usually
tool we usually do uh Tool uh use tool
as the word from Peter good morning Mr
Bob how are you today I'm very excited
to watch your live stream today also
your topic is wonderful no question
thank you have a nice day I hope you do
too uh let's see
[Music]
here I don't know William how many tools
do you have in your home so we have
tools in the house we have a small set
of tools in the house you know a small
Hammer screwdrivers those kinds of
things um and then hundreds of tools
there are tools here from when my
parents own the farm so there's just
definitely tools
everywhere posum pibble says hi Bob the
bathroom light doesn't work there is
electricity in the house but I think
there is no electric current going to
the bathroom light how can I fix this
safely
fix it very very safely the first thing
you should get um is you should the
first thing you should get is you should
find something that detects whether
there is electricity in the socket or
Outlet before you work on it and then
make sure you turn off the breaker or
remove the fuse to that socket uh and
then I would just have a look once you
know how to do it safely make sure
there's no electricity there
um from tagal hello dear teacher Bob no
questions today just want to say I
really love sound effects done by you I
should work on them more um I maybe I
that's what I should do I should take a
class and become a professional uh sound
effects Creator maybe that's my uh maybe
that's my future hey we're going to get
back to the lesson after I have a sip of
water it's funny because kesar in the
chat says I'm positive that this is not
live it's it's just a pre-recorded video
no it's not a pre-recorded video in fact
um if you look here I'll show you if you
look here it is currently
8:49 oh they won't stay on the
screen
8:49 uh amm Eastern Standard Time August
16
2024 um the Olympics ended last week by
the way thanks to all of you from France
for hosting the Olympics um
but yeah this is definitely live kesar
um John wedge says gear pulley is very
handy to take off bearings yes it I like
that tool it is a handy tool okay let's
get back to the
lesson pipe wrench so this is a a wrench
that's adjustable you can spin part of
it to open and close it and you can use
it to tighten pipes when you put one
pipe into a fitting
you'll use a pipe wrench to tighten that
so you use this once again to tighten or
to loosen something and in this case a
pipe wrench is used to tighten and
loosen pipes um and I did forget to
mention there is something called an
adjustable wrench I don't have a picture
of that that's a handy uh wrench to have
as well because you can you can open and
close it so it's the right size but a
pipe wrench is used to tighten and to
loosen
pipes a crowbar so I think this has a
lot of different names I call it a
crowbar it's also called a pry bar it is
used to pry things if you had two pieces
of wood that were nailed together and
you wanted to get them apart you would
try to put the end of the pry bar
between them and then you would pry
that's the English verb we use you would
move the bar and pop open or separate
those two pieces of wood a very handy
tool to have generally when it has the
curved end I call it a crowbar if it's
just a bar um like the one I showed you
in my picture that's leaning against the
wall can we get back to that real fast
let's see how fast so you see that red
handled thing leaning against the wall
that's a pry bar um or what I would call
a pry bar whoa went too far bolt cutters
so you were asking about tools that
teachers and farmers use so at school we
have a set of bolt cutters in case a
student forgets the combination to their
lock or if someone puts the wrong lock
on a locker we use a bolt cutter to cut
the lock off but generally a bolt cutter
is used to cut actually you can cut wire
like metal wire or bolts or locks with
it and we just simply use to cut you
might say to snip you might use the bolt
cutters to snip some wire but uh
definitely a handy tool to have when you
squeeze the end of the bolt cutter um it
puts
enormous uh pressure on where the end is
closing like when you squeeze the one
end because of all the little lever
mechanisms it really uh cuts through a
lot of stuff yes a clamp a clamp is used
to clamp things or to hold things so if
you like making things out of wood and
you need to glue them together so you
put glue
like you put glue on and then you put
the two pieces of wood together you then
need to clamp them as the glue dries you
put on a clamp to hold the wood together
or you can say you clamp the wood
together so very handy tool to have you
can see that you can spin the end and it
closes and opens or you could say it
tightens and loosens as
well and this is a utility
knife just in the chat I see keevan say
oh I really thought it was pre-recorded
too but thank you anyway you're awesome
yes it's definitely not pre-recorded uh
this this is the real thing uh let's get
back though oh no that says your
students get the locks provided they are
provided
um but sometimes students will bring
their own and then um if the school
doesn't uh own the lock we can't figure
out how to open it if we own the lock we
have all the combinations we look at the
serial number but
yeah a utility knife so a utility knife
is interesting generally it has a
retractable blade so if you look at this
utility knife there's a little thing on
top you can slide and then the blade
will go in and out this is for safety
you use a utility knife uh to cut things
to carve things to scrape things there
are a lot of uses for a utility knife um
and then usually inside there's extra
blades so if you open it up there's a
little storage compartment where you can
have extra blades but a utility knife is
super handy you can use it to cut rope
you can use it to um cut little zip ties
off of things you can use it for many
many things and usually it has a
retractable blade for safety so when
you're done using it you can put the
blade back inside and then uh no one
will injure themselves safety glasses
hearing protection work gloves these are
all things that we wear to protect
ourselves so when you are doing um any
kind of work you want to protect your
you will wear goggles safety goggles or
safety glasses in fact on this
screen on the white background those are
safety goggles and on the blue
background I would call these safety
glasses these are things we wear to
protect our eyes when you're cutting or
grinding or snipping uh things can fly
at your face and you don't want
something to go in your eye so wear
safety glasses to protect your
eyes similarly when you are working with
uh different kinds of tools Power Tools
in particular it can be very loud and
you will wear some kind of hearing
protection don't have mine here I wear
the little tiny ones that you can put in
your ear but you can also wear these
large ones you wear these to protect
your hearing so you wear these to
protect your eyes and your eyesight you
wear these to protect your not really
your ears but your hearing you use those
to protect your hearing because
sometimes when you're cutting a piece of
wood with a power saw it's so loud it
can damage or hurt your ears and then
work gloves I always wear work gloves
when I was younger I didn't but it's
very common if you see me working on
something to see me wearing safety
glasses sometimes it I'm just wearing my
reading glasses as safety glasses
because it's hard for me to see close up
I'm usually wearing some kind of hearing
protection if it's loud and then gloves
because the last thing I want to have
happen is I don't want to hurt my hands
while I'm working on something I do not
enjoy that so you need to protect
yourself I also wear knee pads right now
when I'm laying pavers but I don't have
a picture of
those uh a square so a square is used to
square things up what I mean by this is
if you have a piece of wood and another
piece of wood where they come together
you want this to be a 90° angle
sometimes and in order to do that you
use what's called a square so you put a
square in the corner and then you know
it's a perfect 90° angle and then you
can nail it or screw it together we we
also use a square to Mark a piece of
wood before we cut it so if I have a
piece of wood I can lay the square
across and then draw a line so that I
can make sure I'm creating a 90° cut so
I should have added that you can use a
square to square up two pieces of wood
or to Mark a piece of wood with a pencil
so you know where to cut
it pliers very handy the this uh set of
pliers is actually called needlenose
pliers you use these to squeeze to twist
to tighten to loosen to cut Pliers are
very very handy I love a good pair of
pliers you can use a pair of pliers like
this to squeeze something together so
the ends come you can squeeze something
together you can twist something with
them you can if you have two wires you
can put the pliers on and then you can
twist the wires you can tighten
something you can loosen and then
there's actually a tiny little this pair
of pliers has a little cutting area
right at the base of most pairs of
pliers you can cut string or wire pliers
very very handy and similar to scissors
it's pliers um we always use the
plural um so you you can have a pair of
scissors a pair of pliers um etc etc and
a pair of pruners by the way um we use
pruners to prune to snip and to cut and
we use these for plants Jen uses pruners
to cut flowers I use pruners to prune my
trees you can use pruners to snip weeds
off in the garden although you should
pull them out by the roots but pruners
um look similar to pliers but they are
made like it's sharp the edge of a
pruner is very sharp it's made to cut
things to snip things to prune things
very handy be careful when you use
pruners wear
gloves ratchet so ratchets are cool this
ratchet has a socket on the end you
would put the socket onto a nut and then
a ratchet is neat because when you turn
one way it
goes and when you turn the other way it
tightens I'm not making a very good
ratchet sound and then you can flip a
little
switch and then it goes was the opposite
which way was I going before I can't
remember but now it will
loosen so it has a mechanism inside that
allows it to turn one way and then not
the other way I hopefully that made some
sense it is used in the same situation
as a wrench but sometimes it's just
handier to use a ratchet to tighten or
to loosen bolts and nuts so again you
put a socket on the end you find the
right side socket maybe you need a 12 mm
socket you put it on the end of the
ratchet use it to tighten and to loosen
bolts and then a chisel a chisel is used
for many things you can use it to Chisel
to carve to chip um so for instance if
you had a block of wood and you wanted
to make uh turn it into an owl you could
use a chisel with a hammer or just by
hand to kind of carve that wood if you
had a piece of stone you could chip
pieces of the stone off with a hammer
and chisel to make it a different shape
so you can use the verb to Chisel to
carve to chip whenever you are using a
chisel hey let's do members only chat
let me get a sip of water Ralph says now
I understand the meaning of the gear in
Ratchet and Clank oh yeah there you
go for
sure um
William says I like this class because
I'm learning new tools it's different to
my country new tools thanks for that Bob
yeah no problem uh let me get the
members only chat turned
on uh where do we go here and I just
want to say hi to the 266 people who are
currently watching that is awesome you
do not need to leave members only chat
is about 10 minutes long if you are a
member you can ask a question directly
in the chat and I will answer it and I
will also continue to answer tool
related questions from the question form
although this first one is not tool
related but I'll still put it up here uh
it says let me see
here from Anakin hi Bob have a good day
do you know what's the difference
between Cuisine and dish so I use
Cuisine to talk about a certain type of
food like do you like French cuisine um
and I don't use dish like dish I would
use more like um
yeah I don't use the word dish a lot
like it's a yummy dish like oh my mom
made stew and it was a yummy dish that's
how you would use that but I don't often
use the word dish to be honest know that
in the chat me Members chat when it
comes to fixing things on your farm or
in your house which do you prefer to do
Bob the ones in your house or on your
farm I think I like the farm ones better
um there are things I like to do and
things I don't like to do in the house
and outside I don't mind working with
wood or pavers or stone or gravel I
don't mind doing electrical work I
understand electricity I do not like
doing Plumbing like pipes and water and
water pressure that that doesn't
interest me like I I call a plumber if I
have a problem with that so definitely
Farm though I like outside I like fixing
things like if Jen needs a new door on
the chicken Coupe I like that kind of
work I can do that John wedge hello Bob
no question today just having fun with
your sound effects awesome uh Anna
takaha says thank you for the helpful
class I'm listening to you while washing
my plates very good you're multitasking
maranto is here good to see you maranto
hello he says Wanda says Hi teacher Bob
do you have special tools to fix your
car thank you that is another thing I do
not really do myself I will change
windshield WI ERS I will change
headlights um but everything else I have
done at a garage including like if I had
a flat tire I would put on a spare tire
or get the tire fixed but uh generally
I'm I'm
not like I could learn how to do it but
it doesn't interest me it's easier just
to get it fixed by someone John wedge
says don't forget to give a thumbs up
folks yes thank you for that John uh LLY
do you allow your children to use your
tools yes but they know they are
supposed to put the tool back but we all
uh sometimes forget to do that so uh yes
they are allowed to use the tools in
fact it's encouraged I like it when kids
learn to fix things know that says have
you ever had a project where after you
started it you reached the limits of
your craftsmanship and had to call in a
company/
professional Yes actually I installed a
new stove top uh probably over 10 years
ago now I removed the old stove top um I
found the breaker in the basement I made
sure the electricity was off as I
mentioned earlier I removed the old
stovetop I installed a new one and I did
everything but I still had an
electrician come to check to make sure I
did it right because it's electrical
it's not gas or propane it's and so I
thought I and so he came and said
everything was good and he still charged
me $50 but that was fine it was worth
knowing I had done it right
um Freddy wolf Bob I'm pretty sure you
will soon have a phone call from a movie
director who wants to hire you for
making the sound effects of his next
Blockbuster I'm not sure we'll see know
that just a little fun question which
repair tasks are more likely to cause
you to get injured except for sinks
anytime I pry
something sometimes when you are prying
something with a crowbar or pry bar the
end will pop out and then this hand
might get smashed against the wall so
anytime I'm like exerting a lot of force
with a pry bar or even pulling a nail
out with a hammer that's when I'm most
likely to get injured that's why I
always wear gloves uh from LLY loly
thanks for your answer Bob no problem
Ralph the chainsaw was indeed close to
an original motor well done yeah
chainsaws there there's even more safety
equipment for chainsaws there's a visor
there's um special pants you can wear
that will stop the chainsaw from cutting
you um it's important to wear protective
gear when using a chainsaw Michael hello
Bob do you know how to weld I learned
stick welding in a bit from a pipeline
crew that camped on our farm once by the
way what's the difference between a
farmer and welder the welder knows he
can't
farm so yes I do know how to weld I do
own a welder I haven't used it for a
long time if I have any welding to do
and if it's portable I go and have and
see if Jen's dad can do it he's a very
good welder know that when you were
studying back then Bob did you know that
you would work in construction during
the semester breaks or was that a
spontaneous decision of yours when I was
16 I got a job a summer job doing
construction and I worked for that
person for a few Summers and then I
worked for my uncle for a few Summers it
was the best paying job where you could
get the most hours as a summer like as a
student worker so I could work N9 and 1
half hours a day and I could work
Saturdays and that's so there was lots
of work I was good at it my uncle had a
business and a friend of mine worked for
someone so initially I worked for the
same boss as my friend it wasn't
spontaneous it was very calculated I
paid like $3 an hour more than any other
job Freddy Wolf by the way the par
Olympics open ceremony will take place
August 28th and the games will last till
September 8th I hope that they will be
as amazing that the former one was
thanks for all Bob yes and thanks again
to everyone in France for hosting the
Olympics and the paral Olympics
hopefully everything goes well no that
says thanks for your answer no problem
um let's get another question on the
screen and it's weird when I switch
doesn't pop up right away and then all
of the sudden it does pop up or do I
have to go oh that's what I have to do
from hockey
did you want to be an engineer when you
were young because you are very familiar
with tools and mechanical things I guess
have a great day
no no that never really interested me um
maybe an architect a little bit but not
not an engineer I I like fixing things
and Building Things but not enough for
it to be my
job from Tommy I'm going to arrive in
Canada next week very cool in Canadian
culture how could we get a part-time job
should I go directly to the business and
ask for this look for Help Wanted signs
close to where you are living so often a
business will put a sign in the window
that says help wanted and it means they
are hiring and then the other option
would be to there might be a job bank or
a Community Job Center near you and they
might have a list of jobs that you could
look for uh from the chat ke Park says
hi Bob would you always organize your
tools or just put them out in your
garage I try to organize them but as I
mentioned before I'm not that good at
keeping things organized it's very
tricky um oops Adam hello Bob in Canada
the students can use their electronic
Tools in school in my country the
government wants to ban the electronic
Tools in school for students
thanks in my school and in most schools
I think you're talking about phones
right uh in my school if you're in a
class where you you're learning to make
videos you can have your phone uh in
most other classes you can't have your
phone that's that's kind of been that
way for a few years now at my school and
other schools are starting to do that as
well you can use your phone at
lunchtime we might ban
them we might ban them completely at
some point but uh so far um it's okay to
use them in your free time okay let's
see here let me turn off members only
chat
and we will get back to the lesson in a
moment let me do
this let me check to see if there are
any last members
questions John wedge says hey Bob by the
way I'll soon be using tools to set up
the crib and children's things yes it's
handy when you buy things like that
sometimes they come with a little
toolkit so you have all the tools that
you need to actually do it okay where
did we leave off everyone were we on
chisel I think we were let me have
another sip of
water and then we will get started on
the lesson again an axe an axe is used
to chop to chop down to cut it's a very
difficult tool to use like a chainsaw is
easier uh to use than an axe um sorry an
axe is easy to learn to use but it's
very physically demanding like you need
a lot of muscles to use an axe but you
can use an axe to chop down a
tree you can use an axe uh to cut up
some logs whatever you need to do a
level when you build things you want
them to be square so you use a square to
make 90° but you also want them to be
level what we mean by level is if you
hang a picture on the wall and it might
be a little crooked you could use a
level it has a little bubble inside of
air in liquid and as you move the
picture with the level on top eventually
the bubble will move between two lines
and then you know it's perfectly level
so again I'm try to use my hands here
crooked crooked and right in the middle
level and you would use a tool like this
to make sure things are leveled it's
called a level you use it to level
things drill cordless drill and you use
it to drill or to make a hole um I
picked a really bad picture though
because this guy's actually using the
drill to put screws in he's not drilling
a hole but uh Hey if you watch Jen's
video that's coming out this Sunday I do
drill some holes in that but uh you
would just call it a drill or a cordless
drill so you have drills that plug into
the wall but you have drills with
batteries so drill is the general term
and then cordless drill would be a drill
that has a battery use it to drill use
it to make a hole obviously you can also
use it to put in screws if you need
to jigsaw so a slightly different kind
of saw the blade goes up and down really
fast in fact it's similar in a way
to like it's similar to a hacksaw in
that sense although you can use it to
cut wood if if you need to but uh a
jigsaw is a very cool tool because as
you cut you can turn when you use a
circular saw or a power saw you have to
cut straight but with a jig saw you can
kind of like follow a curved line if you
need to a sander we like things to be
smooth when we build them out of wood
and sometimes even when it's made out of
metal a sander has sandpaper on it
that's
really like rough paper with actually
has sand glued to it and it moves really
fast so a sander would be
like so it's moving really really fast
in one direction or many directions and
then it basically removes a tiny layer
from the wood or metal to make it very
very
smooth and you use it to sand or too
smooth a ladder is used to climb so if
you need to get up somewhere you would
use a ladder to climb to climb up or to
get up somewhere those would be all the
words you could use you can see this
person they leaned a ladder against the
front of their house now they can climb
the ladder to maybe paint or clean
something or whatever they need to
do and then we have a step ladder so
this ladder is one piece you need to
lean it trying to pretend that's the
house you need to lean it against the
house a step ladder you can set up and
then you can climb one side so a step
ladder is handy because you do not need
to lean the step ladder against a wall
you can just simply set up the ladder
and then climb the step ladder by the
way we would just call this a ladder as
well like if someone said to you hey can
you grab that ladder they don't always
say step ladder unless there's two
ladders then you would want to specify
which ladder the step ladder please a
vice so a vice is a
device a vise is a device that's used to
hold or to squeeze things so when you
have a vice you can turn the end and
then it comes together and so you could
put a piece of wood in and then tighten
it to hold that piece of wood and then
you could drill something you could
drill the wood or cut the wood or um
pound things into the wood you could do
many many different things but a vice is
used to hold or squeeze things I do have
a vice in my machine shed it's very
handy a visce is a very handy tool to
have Sor I have a fly
here an anvil so an anvil is
something it's just a big heavy piece of
hard metal that you can use when like if
you have a hammer and you want to
flatten something you would lay it on
the Anvil and then you would hit it
repeatedly with the hammer um maybe you
want to bend something you might put it
on the Anvil and then slowly hit it as
you turn it to bend it so an anvil it
doesn't actually do anything but it's a
surface that you use to shape or flatten
or curve or bend something I also have
an anvil it's the Anvil my dad bought
many many years ago it's it's huge it's
very cool U I'll make a video at some
point showing you my machine shed and
you will see the
Anvil a wheelbarrow a wheelbarrow is
used to wheel things around if I fill my
wheelbarrow with stone I could say to my
son hey can you wheel that behind the
barn and dump it oh you also dump a
wheelbarrow so you can wheel and then
dump hopefully you're understanding my
actions there um so a wheelbarrow is a
little cart with one wheel on the front
and two handles on the back and then a
place to put stuff and you can use it to
wheel things to different places on your
property you can use it to carry things
let's say you had a lot of branches that
fell off a tree you could uh chop up the
branches uh with your chainsaw and put
them in your wheelbarrow and then you
could wheel them to a different place
and uh then you could dump
them a paintbrush and a paint roller you
use a paintbrush to paint or to brush
you use a paint roller to paint or to
roll so if you don't like the color of
the walls in your house you can use a
paintbrush to paint the walls you can
use the paintbrush to brush on some
paint maybe I should add the word on to
that verb or you might use a paint
roller a paint roller is just really
wide and it turns so you can put more
paint on uh than you can with a
paintbrush um we usually paint the
corners and around the doors with a
paintbrush and then we usually roll
paint on the rest of the room with a
paint roller it's just faster that way a
shovel so a shovel there are many
different types of shovel shovels you
use a shovel to shovel to dig so the
difference being if I have a pile of
stone I can shovel the stone into the
wheelbarrow okay but if there if
I'm out in my yard I can dig a hole in
the ground okay so shovel means simply
to move stuff like you can shovel some
Stone from one place to another but when
you dig you're actually making a hole in
the ground that would be the difference
between to shovel and to
dig to rake or a rake so this is a rake
we would might we might call this a
garden rake by the way this is a leaf
rake or fan rake we would call this a
garden rake or just a rake you use it to
rake things like when you pull a rake it
kind of gathers whatever's on the
surface um you can also use it to level
things out so in my job right now I'm
using a rake to level out Stone okay but
you could rake Stone you could rake dirt
you can um whenever you need to just
rake or gather or level something you
can use a rake and then a leaf rake or
fan rake this is a special type of rake
used mostly for cleaning up leaves um
people often in this part of the world
will rake their leaves in the fall um
when you have a rake like this it's very
light you could not use this for stone
it's it's plastic and it's not very
strong but it is perfect for raking
leaves if you need to rake leaves that
that that is the kind of rake you would
want a leaf rake or fan
rake hey one last picture let's make
this
bigger so yes this is my current
project how big can I make
this I'll put that in the middle of the
screen um that's where I'm going to be
today that's where I'm going to go I'm
going to go
outside uh and I'm going to finish that
job right after this live stream
hopefully it doesn't take too long I do
have help by the way um couple of my
kids will be helping um and we um we're
using the tractor to move the pavers not
the wheelbarrow so it's actually not too
hard we just load them in the tractor
and drive them over but anyways thanks
for watching everybody hope you uh were
able to learn some things oh wait do I
have to do questions yet what am I doing
let me get what's left
here okay three more questions Hobart hi
Bob have a nice day
I I never you have been a farmer in
childhood used a lot of tools to plant
the plants but I don't know the name of
the tools in English oh I see I was a
farmer when I was a kid and I used a lot
of tools to plant the plants but I don't
know the name of the tools in English
well hopefully you know some of them now
there are a lot more gardening and
farming tools I could do another lesson
on that at some point uh we'll see o hi
what is the difference between scissors
pruners and Snips so
for me scissors cut paper pruners cut
branches and um stems of plants and
Snips are used to cut metal so if you
have like really thin metal you can use
Snips we sometimes call them tin snips
so for me in my part of the world in
English scissors cut paper and other
paper type things paper string like you
would use scissors in a house pruners
are for plants and Snips are for cutting
really really thin
metal from Bridget do you also need an
examination or certificate to cut huge
trees and how to handle safely the
motors saw as a farmer I am allowed to
have a chainsaw and chop down a tree if
I go to chop down a tree in town I think
I would need to have some I I think
there are laws I'm not 100% sure though
but as a farmer I can do whatever I I
want I am free to do what I
want uh from Ismail hi Bob could you
tell me please is entrance way used only
for the area inside a building's
entrance or can it also refer to the
space outside the front door thank you
so interestingly
enough if you look at that door I call
that the entrance to my house I could
also call it the entrance
way when I go inside that door I'm
standing in the entrance way to my house
so it can be used for me I actually use
it for both the outside and inside it's
by the front entrance that can mean if I
say my keys are by the front entrance it
can mean inside or outside but close to
the door but I would call this the
entrance way oh the package was by the
entrance way or the package is in the
entrance way both would work for me it
might be different in other parts of the
English speaking world but uh that's how
it works for me hey that's it I'm going
to say bye bye
everyone I hope you have a good day bye
to John wedge Pedro hoaky ke Park Fatima
o vtor jezen LLY LLY I know if I scroll
back bye to uh Freddy wolf know
that uh Oleg G gerilla Runner lots of

awesome hanging around with you I wish
you and your family a wonderful day and

that also further back said could you
give my regards to Dave the Canadian Bob
it would be cool to see WR him here
again sometime but I I'm sure he's super
busy I do not see Dave very often I
haven't seen Dave for a long time but if
I do run into him I will pass that on uh
let's see here Michael says thank you
for the amazing lesson no problem Leo
says by CK Chen uh sterk says
thanks uh Ismail says thank you Bob
thanks for the lesson says Fatima bye
says haki yes bye to everyone have a
good weekend this was fun remember this
lesson will come out in a shorter
version in a couple days you should
watch it it's good because it helps you
remember everything you have heard and
everything you have learned repetition
is important for remembering vocabulary
um so you don't have to watch the whole
lesson but you should probably listen to
it and if you can understand it you can
even speed it up a bit that's helpful as
well but yes do do that and uh I will
see you Tuesday with another English
lesson and if you didn't watch this past
Tuesday's lesson I'm in a barrel you
should go watch it it's on prepositions
of place I tried to make it as funny and
entertaining as possible I think you
will enjoy it in fact I will get you a
link for that give me one second
here um where do I go for that I click
here I click here I click here I click
here and then there we
go
um now I think I did it right here we go
here
is I have a different keyboard here here
cuz we set this computer up for Jen to
edit it's about prep so you probably
hear the loud
keyboard than you I can't type at
all it's like one of my kids's old
gaming keyboards it has
really loud keys so but anyways I should
finish this off uh bye everybody have a
good day um
Keen says please make a video about the
difference between W could and make I
will try sometime but that gets a little
tricky um oh and John wedge says and
follow Jen's Channel as
well um that
is I'll get a link for that as well if
people are
interested um let's see here Jen's
flower farming
Channel um
um I'm uh going overtime now don't you
guys have to get to work or enjoy
yourself so there you go um if you want
a uh English lesson on prepositions of
place uh you can see the link right
there I will pin it and if you are
interested in Jen's Channel about flower
farming it's also uh linked right there
I'll put that in
again if if you go to Jen's Channel only
go if you're interested in farming and
flowers there you won't learn a lot of
English it's a lot more Beauty than it
is actual uh talking Jen likes to show
the process of growing flowers and some
people have found it quite enjoyable to
follow along but anyways um and I'll put
a link to Jen's Channel Below in the
comments as well so anyways thanks for
watching everybody see you I'm going to
go uh work I think it'll take me four
hours I'll post a picture on the
