really appreciate it and I will continue 03:26
to give you super useful content to 03:29
learn English okay so now let's talk 03:33
about sports when I was young I used to 03:36
play sports I was never that good I had 03:40
an older brother who also played Sports 03:46
and he was better than me at every sport 03:50
we played but I did play a little bit of 03:54
hockey and a little bit of soccer as 03:58
well and here is a picture of the the 04:01
highlight of my hockey career this was 04:07
when I won a trophy for being the MVP at 04:11
the allstar game for my league now some 04:17
of you might remember my video about uh 04:21
what does VIP mean very important person 04:26
but this one is the 04:32
MVP so do you know what MVP means I'll 04:34
give you a few seconds to think about 04:40
it so MVP means Most Valuable Player and 04:43
this is an acronym or a term that we use 04:50
usually for sports the MVP we don't say 04:56
VIP we say MVP so that was probably the 05:01
peak of my sports career and then after 05:06
that it kind of just I got lazy and I 05:10
stopped playing 05:14
sports sometimes I still do Muay Thai um 05:15
and boxing because I really like the 05:20
Combat Sports but I don't compete or and 05:23
I don't uh play in a team for any sport 05:28
right now so that was a little bit about 05:33
my sports 05:37
history you probably noticed that I used 05:38
the word soccer instead of 05:43
football now in countries like Canada 05:47
the 05:51
USA even 05:52
Australia and New Zealand I believe 05:54
people use the the word soccer instead 05:58
of football and in this podcast I will 06:02
use the word soccer cuz that is what 06:06
Canadians and Americans say and I am 06:09
Canadian by the way if you didn't know 06:13
now the interesting thing is that the 06:17
word soccer actually originated in 06:20
England and you might be thinking well 06:24
in England they say football I thought 06:28
Americans created this word soccer to 06:31
just be different but no soccer started 06:35
in England because it used to be called 06:39
association 06:45
football in England they had many 06:47
different types of football a lot of the 06:50
sports where you had a ball and you used 06:53
your feet were called football 06:57
so even sports like rugby were a type of 07:00
football so to separate what's now known 07:06
as soccer from the other footballs they 07:09
called it association football that was 07:13
the name of soccer and then they 07:17
shortened association football to a sock 07:20
football ass o footb football a sock 07:25
football sounded weird so they just 07:31
changed a sock football to socker so now 07:34
they had both soccer and football and in 07:39
the late 19th century and 20th 07:44
Century soccer or football made its way 07:48
to the 07:52
USA and at that time the USA already had 07:54
American football the one where they 07:59
have the ball and they throw it and they 08:02
tackle each 08:04
other so 08:05
America to avoid confusion they just 08:07
used that word 08:11
soccer and it stuck but most other 08:14
countries still use the word football I 08:18
know that story was a little bit 08:22
confusing but in a 08:24
nutshell there were many different type 08:26
of football in England what is now known 08:30
as soccer was called association 08:33
football because that was the type of 08:37
football it was and then they shortened 08:39
it to a sock football which then turned 08:43
into soccer and when the sport came to 08:47
the USA they just used that word soccer 08:51
to avoid confusion with American 08:56
football okay so there is the little 08:59
history lesson I hope it wasn't too 09:02
confusing so now let's play a little 09:05
game let's see if you know the five most 09:08
common Sports in Vietnam I did some 09:13
research on this and tried to figure out 09:17
the most common Sports and this is what 09:20
I found so what do you think the most 09:24
common sport in Vietnam is this one is 09:28
pretty easy if you guessed soccer then 09:32
you are correct now since soccer is so 09:35
popular in Vietnam let's talk about it 09:39
firstly soccer is played on a field this 09:43
field could have real grass or fake 09:48
grass and that fake grass is called Turf 09:52
and the professional soccer teams play 09:56
at a stadium but they still play on a 10:00
field so the field is in the stadium 10:04
each team has 11 players and they each 10:08
have their own positions including 10:12
goalkeepers midfielders Defenders and 10:15
forwards and of course each team has a 10:19
coach now in professional games there 10:24
are usually four ref referees and the 10:27
referees are there to make sure the 10:30
players don't break the rules and if 10:34
they do they decide how to penalize them 10:36
so soccer is the most common sport in 10:41
the world probably because you don't 10:45
need much to play it you just need a 10:49
ball and an area to play in you don't 10:52
even need a net you can just put two 10:56
things there and that is your net I 10:59
remember being young and we would make a 11:02
net just with like random things like a 11:05
can and then a plastic bag and that is 11:09
your net right and so for soccer and a 11:12
lot of other team sports we call the 11:16
competition between two teams a match so 11:20
it's like a soccer match but for some 11:25
other sports we can also call it a game 11:28
for example for American football uh 11:32
hockey basketball and baseball you will 11:36
often 11:41
hear Americans and Canadians call it a 11:42
game for example we'll say did you watch 11:46
the hockey game last night or did you 11:50
watch the basketball game but for other 11:53
sports like boxing tennis 11:56
rugby and for sports played in Europe 12:00
they will usually say match for example 12:05
did you watch the football match or the 12:09
rugby match yesterday was crazy so for 12:13
these matches they can usually end in 12:17
three ways either one side will win 12:20
will'll lose or it will be a draw so for 12:24
example if Vietnam plays a football 12:29
match and they win you could say Vietnam 12:32
won the football match but if you want 12:37
to say that Vietnam 12:40
defeated another team we often use the 12:44
word beat so to beat and to defeat mean 12:48
the same thing but to beat is more 12:53
natural and is more common so for 12:58
example you could say Spain beat England 13:01
in the Euro 2024 Championship or if you 13:05
want to say it the other way around we 13:10
use the verb lost to for example England 13:13
lost to Spain in the Euro 2024 13:18
Championship okay so that was a lot 13:23
about soccer we spent a lot of time 13:25
talking about soccer just because it is 13:29
so popular so now let's move to the 13:32
number two most common sport in Vietnam 13:36
do you know what it is I'll give you 13:41
three 13:44
seconds two one the second most common 13:45
sport in Vietnam is badminton badminton 13:50
is really popular because again you 13:55
don't need much to play it you need a 13:58
racket a shuttlecock and if you want you 14:02
can use a net and when you go around 14:07
Vietnam you see people playing 14:11
badminton in so many places like in 14:14
Parks or on the street for example all 14:18
they need to do is attach a net to two 14:22
trees and then that's a SP SP where you 14:26
can play badminton so personally I love 14:30
badminton I think it's a really fun game 14:33
it's not too difficult okay so now let's 14:36
move to the third most popular sport in 14:39
Vietnam which 14:44
is table tennis all right so table 14:47
tennis can also be called pingpong and 14:50
it's popular all around Vietnam Vietnam 14:54
is also pretty good at it there are a 14:58
lot of Vietnamese players in 15:01
international tournaments so they are 15:05
able to compete on the 15:07
intern on the international stage for 15:10
table tennis you simply need a table 15:13
with a net and two paddles some people 15:17
call them rackets but I think it makes 15:22
more sense to call it a paddle and also 15:25
of course you need a pingpong ball or a 15:28
table tennis ball all right so let's 15:32
move to number four the fourth most 15:34
popular sport in Vietnam 15:38
is volleyball so there are two main 15:41
types of volleyball there is indoor 15:45
volleyball and there is beach volleyball 15:48
that you can play 15:52
outside because on the beach you can 15:54
dive you can fall 15:57
and you're not going to get hurt unlike 15:59
falling on 16:02
concrete and so actually Vietnam is very 16:04
good at volleyball too the men and the 16:08
women's team regularly compete in the 16:12
international 16:15
tournaments and I saw in a news article 16:17
not too long ago that the women's team 16:20
came third in a pretty big championship 16:24
I I can't remember the name of the 16:29
championship but they came third I think 16:31
right 16:34
behind uh Czech Republic who came first 16:35
and Puerto Rico I think Puerto Rico who 16:39
came second but the point is is that 16:42
Vietnam is also very good at volleyball 16:46
and so number five the fifth most 16:50
popular sport 16:54
is basketball so basketball is a sport 16:56
that's growing pretty fast in Vietnam uh 17:01
especially among the young population 17:05
I'm sure many of you when you see the 17:09
basketball courts the public basketball 17:12
courts in some areas like in the in the 17:15
VIN holes 17:18
Apartments you'll 17:20
see the vast majority of the players are 17:22
young kids and so basketball ball has 17:25
become very popular amongst uh the young 17:29
crowd and in Vietnam there is a 17:33
basketball association called the VBA 17:37
the Vietnam Basketball 17:41
Association this is a league that has 17:44
six teams including the Hanoi buffalos 17:47
uh the Saigon heat uh the Nang dolphins 17:51
and three other teams and for for 17:55
basketball again you don't need too much 17:59
you need a flat and hard surface like 18:02
not grass but concrete a basketball net 18:05
and a basketball there are a few other 18:09
sports that are worth mentioning oops 18:12
that was my phone like Billiards so 18:16
Billiards is a broad term for sports 18:20
played with the Q normally a lot of 18:25
native speakers will call it pool so if 18:29
it's the game with the table with the 18:33
holes then we call it pool but there's 18:36
also the game with no holes that they 18:39
play in Vietnam and that is called carum 18:42
uh it's quite popular I've never played 18:47
it it looks pretty hard but yeah all 18:49
right guys so now let's do the sports 18:52
quiz five questions question number 18:55
one which country won the FIFA World Cup 19:00

about sports when I was young I used to
play sports I was never that good I had
an older brother who also played Sports

we played but I did play a little bit of

it to a sock football which then turned
into soccer and when the sport came to
the USA they just used that word soccer
to avoid confusion with American
football okay so there is the little
history lesson I hope it wasn't too
confusing so now let's play a little
game let's see if you know the five most
common Sports in Vietnam I did some
research on this and tried to figure out
the most common Sports and this is what
I found so what do you think the most
common sport in Vietnam is this one is
pretty easy if you guessed soccer then
you are correct now since soccer is so
popular in Vietnam let's talk about it
firstly soccer is played on a field this

remember being young and we would make a

your net right and so for soccer and a
lot of other team sports we call the
competition between two teams a match so
it's like a soccer match but for some
other sports we can also call it a game
for example for American football uh
hockey basketball and baseball you will
often
hear Americans and Canadians call it a
game for example we'll say did you watch
the hockey game last night or did you

defeated another team we often use the
word beat so to beat and to defeat mean
the same thing but to beat is more
natural and is more common so for
example you could say Spain beat England
in the Euro 2024 Championship or if you
want to say it the other way around we
use the verb lost to for example England
lost to Spain in the Euro 2024
Championship okay so that was a lot
about soccer we spent a lot of time
talking about soccer just because it is
so popular so now let's move to the
number two most common sport in Vietnam
do you know what it is I'll give you
three
seconds two one the second most common
sport in Vietnam is badminton badminton
is really popular because again you
don't need much to play it you need a

can play badminton so personally I love
badminton I think it's a really fun game
it's not too difficult okay so now let's
move to the third most popular sport in
Vietnam which
is table tennis all right so table
tennis can also be called pingpong and
it's popular all around Vietnam Vietnam
is also pretty good at it there are a
lot of Vietnamese players in
international tournaments so they are

I I can't remember the name of the
championship but they came third I think
right
behind uh Czech Republic who came first
and Puerto Rico I think Puerto Rico who

become very popular amongst uh the young
crowd and in Vietnam there is a
basketball association called the VBA
the Vietnam Basketball
Association this is a league that has
six teams including the Hanoi buffalos
uh the Saigon heat uh the Nang dolphins
and three other teams and for for
basketball again you don't need too much
you need a flat and hard surface like
not grass but concrete a basketball net
and a basketball there are a few other
sports that are worth mentioning oops

played with the Q normally a lot of
native speakers will call it pool so if
it's the game with the table with the
holes then we call it pool but there's

play in Vietnam and that is called carum
