in the description below okay let's get 03:07
started with the podcast okay so a few 03:11
months ago my brother came to Vietnam 03:14
from Canada to visit me and on that trip 03:18
we did a a trip to hang so it was me my 03:22
brother 03:29
and my two close friends Luke and Steve 03:30
and before you say Carter why would you 03:34
go to hang after your brother just came 03:37
to Vietnam for the first time that must 03:40
be really dangerous but don't worry um 03:43
he does mountain biking in Canada he had 03:46
an international driver's license for 03:50
the motorbike and we did some practice 03:53
in Hanoi before we went to hang so don't 03:56
worry he had experience and we got 03:59
practice in first and he doesn't drive 04:03
like a maniac he drives very carefully 04:06
and intelligently so I wasn't worried I 04:09
know he's a smart guy and anyway so we 04:13
started our trip to hang the trip was 04:17
about 9 or 10 days and we started from 04:20
Hanoi so Steve Luke and I have been to 04:24
hang before Steve especially he's been 04:29
maybe like five or six times so we all 04:32
have some experience going to hang and 04:36
after we started our trip from Hanoi we 04:39
didn't take a night bus to hang we 04:43
started from Hanoi and we drove to hang 04:46
so I had my own bike Luke had his own 04:51
bike but my brother and Steve they both 04:55
rent their own bikes this is important 04:59
for the story so anyway we all start the 05:02
trip from Hanoi and everything is going 05:06
fine and then when we get out of the 05:10
city in Hanoi my friend Steve his bike 05:12
breaks down it broke down pretty much on 05:16
like a a freeway like a long road and it 05:20
didn't look like there was anywhere 05:24
around us to fix the bike so we went to 05:26
this place we walked the bike to a place 05:30
where someone was selling iced tea and 05:34
we asked him if there was anywhere close 05:37
by where we could fix the bike cuz this 05:40
was outside of the city like you look 05:43
around and there's really not much there 05:46
and the guy says just go down that road 05:49
about 20000 M and take a right so we 05:52
thought okay cool and we started to well 05:56
one person was pushing Steve's Bike and 06:00
we made it to the uh to the garage to 06:04
fix the bike so we got the bike fixed 06:07
and we assumed everything was all good 06:10
spoiler alert everything was not all 06:14
good but we'll see why later so anyway 06:17
we go to a home stay and we're staying 06:21
there we had dinner had fun had some 06:25
rice wine 06:29
and we met a big group of Vietnamese 06:30
people so we just hung out with them for 06:33
the night and everything was fun and 06:36
normal so the next few days we stayed at 06:39
some different hom stays there was 06:42
nothing too special about that so I'll 06:44
skip to when we went to the N River now 06:49
right before we went to the N River 06:53
Steve's Bike broke down again so we had 06:57
to go to a garage to get it fixed the 07:01
mechanic had to fix his um his clutch 07:04
like his clutch discs and I got the 07:08
mechanics number because this was the 07:11
second time the bike broke down and I 07:14
figured it might break down again so 07:16
after the bike gets fixed we make our 07:19
way to the N River and for anyone who 07:23
has ever been to the N River before you 07:27
know how beautiful it is from the top of 07:30
that mountain because from there you can 07:35
see down to the river you can see the 07:38
turquoise water and the trail that leads 07:41
to it and the mountains on the other 07:44
side cuz the river is like between two 07:46
mountains in a valley basically and 07:50
normally you would buy a ticket to go on 07:53
the boats down in the river but we 07:58
didn't plan it too well so we didn't buy 08:01
a ticket we just decided we'll go there 08:05
and then we'll get a ticket or we'll pay 08:08
them at the bottom because that's what 08:10
we did a few years ago and it was 08:13
totally okay before we went down to the 08:16
N River uh we took some photos at the 08:20
top and some videos and we really 08:24
enjoyed the scenery I don't often say 08:27
this word but it was like breathtaking 08:30
it was really really nice and after we 08:33
enjoyed the view we started to head down 08:36
to the river now I don't know if you 08:40
have been to theway River before then 08:44
you'll know but for those who have never 08:47
been there when you go down to the river 08:49
the path is really like winding and 08:53
there are a few parts that are really 08:56
Steep and it takes about 20 minutes to 08:59
get down to the bottom so anyway after 09:02
we got to the bottom we plann to go on 09:05
the boat and take a little a little boat 09:09
tour but when we got there everybody was 09:12
painting their boats so we couldn't do 09:17
any tour since we had already driven 09:20
down there we figured okay let's just 09:24
enjoy the the river a bit let's just sit 09:27
here hang out and then we will go back 09:31
up so after hanging out for around 20 09:34
minutes we decided to go back up and get 09:37
some lunch cuz it was around 1 in the 09:41
afternoon at that time and we were 09:44
starting to get hungry but then after we 09:47
got on the bikes to go up the mountain 09:51
guess what happened Steve's Bike broke 09:54
down again so now we're at at the bottom 09:56
of this mountain at the neak river and 10:00
his bike is broken down there's 10:03
absolutely no way we could push the bike 10:06
up cuz it was a really heavy bike and 10:09
even just walking up that mountain with 10:12
nothing would be a difficult workout but 10:15
luckily I had the mechanic's number so I 10:19
called him I said please come down and 10:22
help us you know we'll we'll pay you for 10:25
your time and for your service 10:27
just please come down and help us 10:30
because we really really need your help 10:32
no one in the village by the N River 10:35
could fix our bike so this guy was 10:39
basically our only hope I getting this 10:43
bike up the mountain now luckily he was 10:46
really nice and he agreed to come down 10:49
and help us so after around 45 minutes 10:52
he came and it took around 3 or 4 hours 10:57
to fix the bike and during this time we 11:03
were just waiting for him to fix the 11:06
bike hanging out and people were walking 11:10
by staring at us wondering what we were 11:13
doing there were cows there it was a 11:16
pretty funny scene it even started to 11:19
get dark at around like 5:30 or 6 but 11:22
luckily he fixed the bike and so we 11:27
thanked him we paid him and then we got 11:30
up the mountain and went to our Homestay 11:33
and by that time we were starving 11:38
because we didn't even eat lunch and so 11:40
we had like the best dinner one of the 11:44
best dinners that I think we've all ever 11:47
had and we were not only really hungry 11:49
but the food at this home stay was 11:53
really good as well so now I'll fast 11:56
forward forward to the crazy boat ride 11:58
uh now we found this boat because we 12:02
were following the maps that my friend 12:05
had researched online and it led us to 12:09
go through these really narrow Trails 12:12
where if you fell to the right then like 12:15
it would not be good for you cuz it was 12:20
quite Steep and quite high but after we 12:23
got through those Trails it came to to a 12:26
river where the boat was now as soon as 12:29
they saw us they started to bring the 12:34
boat towards us it's more kind of like a 12:37
ferry for carrying bikes but it's also 12:40
pretty much just a raft with made with 12:44
uh bamboo sticks maybe I'm not totally 12:47
sure and it was moved by man power like 12:50
there was a cord there and they would 12:54
have to pull the cord to move uh 12:56
the boat or the raft I was a little bit 12:59
worried because we had our four bikes on 13:02
it and there were times where water was 13:05
coming up through the raft and I thought 13:08
okay I hope it can hold four bikes but 13:11
anyway it turned out totally fine of 13:14
course the people knew what they were 13:17
doing so then after that the next day 13:19
that's when the really crazy thing 13:23
happened so after that boat ride we went 13:26
to our home stay had dinner slept and 13:29
then the next day we began riding to our 13:33
next destination so on the way to the 13:37
next destination we were going down a 13:40
long road and as we were going I was in 13:44
the front and I could see something down 13:48
the road on basically still on the road 13:52
and so as I kept going and I could see 13:56
it more clearly I could tell that it was 13:59
a man next to his bike and it looked 14:04
like he crashed and so we all drove up 14:07
to him and when we got to him we could 14:10
see that yeah this guy definitely 14:14
crashed it was really bad his helmet was 14:17
completely like destroyed on this side 14:21
like scratched and broken he had on on 14:25
his both of his elbows both of his knees 14:29
his hands basically every like part of 14:31
his body looked like it had been damaged 14:35
from this crash and when he stood up he 14:38
got up really slowly and it looked like 14:42
he had hit his head so I asked him do 14:46
you know what year it is and he said I 14:49
can't really I don't really know off the 14:53
top of my head I don't really know so if 14:57
he doesn't know what year it is it's 14:59
pretty clear that he had a head injury 15:03
probably a concussion or something like 15:06
that at this point we know we have to 15:08
get him to a hospital and luckily there 15:12
was someone driving by in a car and we 15:15
flagged him down and we asked him where 15:19
is the closest hospital we need to bring 15:23
this guy to the hospital because he just 15:26
had a really bad fall and this guy he 15:29
said oh okay like get him in the car uh 15:32
I'll drive him to the hospital we said 15:36
okay great we we will follow you so I 15:39
took the guy's bike the guy who fell 15:43
down and I went with Luke and he went on 15:46
his own bike so Luke and I followed this 15:50
car all the way to the hospital and it 15:54
was around 20 km away pretty far so when 15:57
we got there um there was pretty much no 16:02
one there because this was a hospital in 16:05
a really small town so I walked in I was 16:09
looking for someone and I didn't see 16:14
anyone honestly I just saw a few 16:17
chickens walking around so I thought 16:19
uh-oh but as I went further into the 16:22
hospital uh I found some people 16:26
and I told them like hey we found this 16:29
guy uh he fell on the road he's 16:32
seriously injured he hit his head he's 16:35
bleeding uh please help us and the funny 16:38
thing was was that they seemed more 16:42
surprised about how I could speak 16:45
Vietnamese and they were saying like oh 16:48
your your Vietnamese is is so good and I 16:50
was saying like Okay like thank you but 16:53
um we have to check this guy out because 16:56
he you know he could be seriously hurt 17:00
so that was kind of funny to be honest 17:03
and then we brought him downstairs in 17:07
this hospital to where the doctor was 17:10
and the doctor looked at him took off 17:13
his jacket and we saw that he was more 17:17
injured than we thought because we 17:20
couldn't see under the jacket until he 17:22
took it off and uh that Hospital didn't 17:26
have any machines like x-rays to check 17:30
on him so the doctor said we need to 17:34
send him to a hospital in cang and there 17:38
they can see uh how he is injured and so 17:43
we ordered a truck sent him to that 17:47
hospital uh the truck brought his bike 17:51
along with himself and I got his 17:54
WhatsApp uh phone number so I could stay 17:58
in in touch with him and help him if he 18:01
needed anything so after he got to the 18:03
hospital and got the x-rays done the 18:07
next day he told me he had five broken 18:10
ribs a punctured lung and a ruptured 18:13
kidney along with severe cuts and burns 18:17
on his arm but 18:22
anyway after that he went back to Canada 18:24
and everything is all good so I guess 18:29
the moral of the story is that when you 18:32
go to uh hang just be careful if it's 18:35
you know don't drive too fast be careful 18:42
of the trucks everyone says how 18:45
dangerous it is because there are so 18:47
many accidents but if you just drive 18:49
carefully stay on the side of the road 18:53
don't try to pass people on corners or 18:56
turns or anything crazy like that then 19:00
you should be okay so that's going to 19:03
wrap up the story here is the last photo 19:06
we took uh on that trip of the four of 19:10
us together I think it's a great photo 19:13
it kind of feels like it sums up the 19:16
whole trip right there just we were 19:19
tired and uh it had been a crazy week so 19:22
anyway that is the story of my trip to 19:26
hang I hope you guys enjoyed it uh you 19:29
can write in the comments any 19:33
experiences or trips crazy things that 19:35
happened uh write it and I'll try to 19:39
check it out but yeah that's it for this 19:41
podcast I will see you in the next one 19:44
goodbye 19:47

skip to when we went to the N River now
right before we went to the N River
Steve's Bike broke down again so we had

mechanic had to fix his um his clutch
like his clutch discs and I got the

pretty much just a raft with made with
uh bamboo sticks maybe I'm not totally
sure and it was moved by man power like
there was a cord there and they would
have to pull the cord to move uh
the boat or the raft I was a little bit
worried because we had our four bikes on
it and there were times where water was
coming up through the raft and I thought
okay I hope it can hold four bikes but
anyway it turned out totally fine of
course the people knew what they were
doing so then after that the next day
that's when the really crazy thing
happened so after that boat ride we went
to our home stay had dinner slept and
then the next day we began riding to our
next destination so on the way to the
next destination we were going down a
long road and as we were going I was in
the front and I could see something down
the road on basically still on the road
and so as I kept going and I could see
it more clearly I could tell that it was
a man next to his bike and it looked
like he crashed and so we all drove up
to him and when we got to him we could
see that yeah this guy definitely
crashed it was really bad his helmet was
completely like destroyed on this side
like scratched and broken he had on on
his both of his elbows both of his knees
his hands basically every like part of
his body looked like it had been damaged
from this crash and when he stood up he
got up really slowly and it looked like
he had hit his head so I asked him do
you know what year it is and he said I
can't really I don't really know off the
top of my head I don't really know so if
he doesn't know what year it is it's
pretty clear that he had a head injury
probably a concussion or something like
that at this point we know we have to
get him to a hospital and luckily there
was someone driving by in a car and we
flagged him down and we asked him where
is the closest hospital we need to bring
this guy to the hospital because he just
had a really bad fall and this guy he
said oh okay like get him in the car uh
I'll drive him to the hospital we said
okay great we we will follow you so I
took the guy's bike the guy who fell
down and I went with Luke and he went on
his own bike so Luke and I followed this
car all the way to the hospital and it
was around 20 km away pretty far so when
we got there um there was pretty much no
one there because this was a hospital in
a really small town so I walked in I was
looking for someone and I didn't see
anyone honestly I just saw a few
chickens walking around so I thought
uh-oh but as I went further into the
hospital uh I found some people
and I told them like hey we found this
guy uh he fell on the road he's
seriously injured he hit his head he's
bleeding uh please help us and the funny
thing was was that they seemed more
surprised about how I could speak
Vietnamese and they were saying like oh
your your Vietnamese is is so good and I
was saying like Okay like thank you but
um we have to check this guy out because
he you know he could be seriously hurt
so that was kind of funny to be honest
and then we brought him downstairs in
this hospital to where the doctor was
and the doctor looked at him took off
his jacket and we saw that he was more
injured than we thought because we
couldn't see under the jacket until he
took it off and uh that Hospital didn't
have any machines like x-rays to check
on him so the doctor said we need to
send him to a hospital in cang and there
they can see uh how he is injured and so
we ordered a truck sent him to that
hospital uh the truck brought his bike
along with himself and I got his
WhatsApp uh phone number so I could stay
in in touch with him and help him if he
needed anything so after he got to the
hospital and got the x-rays done the
next day he told me he had five broken
ribs a punctured lung and a ruptured
kidney along with severe cuts and burns
on his arm but
anyway after that he went back to Canada
and everything is all good so I guess
the moral of the story is that when you
go to uh hang just be careful if it's
you know don't drive too fast be careful
of the trucks everyone says how
dangerous it is because there are so
many accidents but if you just drive
carefully stay on the side of the road
don't try to pass people on corners or
turns or anything crazy like that then
you should be okay so that's going to
wrap up the story here is the last photo
we took uh on that trip of the four of
us together I think it's a great photo
it kind of feels like it sums up the
whole trip right there just we were
tired and uh it had been a crazy week so
anyway that is the story of my trip to
hang I hope you guys enjoyed it uh you
can write in the comments any
experiences or trips crazy things that
happened uh write it and I'll try to
check it out but yeah that's it for this
podcast I will see you in the next one
goodbye
