listening. 02:00
Listen to slow English 02:01
while I tell you about my 02:05
stressful trip to China. 02:12
Last week 02:17
I went from Tokyo 02:19
to 02:24
Shanghai. 02:25
Our flight 02:27
left at 10 p.m. [clears throat] 02:29
and we arrived 02:34
in Shanghai 02:37
at 100 a.m. 02:40
So to make sure we caught our flight, 02:44
we left our hostel 02:53
at around 02:58
11 a.m. 03:01
really early. 03:04
We got breakfast 03:07
and I bought a new suitcase. 03:10
I needed one to use as carry on luggage. 03:15
Very big luggage to fit 03:23
all of the things that I bought 03:28
in Tokyo. 03:34
I did a lot of shopping. 03:37
I bought hats, sweaters, 03:42
coats, some very big clunky shoes, 03:46
and lots of souvenirs 03:53
for all of my friends and family. 03:58
After I bought the big suitcase, 04:04
we took the subway train 04:09
to the airport. I love this video. My 04:14
sister is so strong. To get to the 04:20
subway, 04:24
you have to go down 04:26
so many flights 04:29
of stairs. 04:32
And there were no escalators. 04:35
So, my sister carried our giant suitcase 04:40
all by herself. We bought a ticket 04:46
at the vending machine 04:51
and we waited for our train. I was a 04:55
little 05:02
impatient. 05:05
I didn't want to wait any longer. 05:08
So, 05:14
I told my sister, 05:16
"This train is it. 05:19
Let's get on this train." 05:22
So, we boarded the first train that 05:25
passed by 05:31
and it was the wrong train. My sister 05:35
was so annoyed at me because I was so 05:40
restless, 05:49
impatient, 05:51
and I made us board the wrong train. So, 05:52
we had to get off at the next train 06:00
station. 06:06
Finally, we boarded the right train and 06:08
we were on our way to the Tokyo airport. 06:13
We arrived at the airport and we walked 06:20
a long way 06:26
until we found the counters. 06:28
We have to wait 06:32
until it's 2 hours 06:36
before our flight leaves. 06:40
We checked the time and we were 8 hours 06:44
early. 06:51
My sister and I don't like being rushed 06:53
or late. 07:00
But this time I think we were too early. 07:02
[laughter] 07:09
Definitely. 07:10
How early do you go to the airport 07:12
before your flight leaves? 07:18
What's the most comfortable 07:22
time for you to have 07:26
before your flight? 07:29
I need at least 07:33
4 hours. 07:36
Otherwise, I feel like I'm going to miss 07:38
my flight. 07:44
Since we had so much time on our hands, 07:47
we went to the food court and we ate 07:53
some delicious udon noodles. Then when 07:58
it was time, we checked in. 08:04
We went through security. 08:08
We found our gate number 08:12
and 08:16
we waited some more. After 4 hours, we 08:18
were in Shanghai. I tried to connect to 08:24
the Wi-Fi 08:30
so we could start setting up 08:32
our payment apps 08:37
like Wee Pay or Alip Pay. 08:42
If you didn't know, 08:47
China is almost 08:50
cashless. 08:53
They don't use cash 08:56
and they don't accept 09:01
our cards, 09:06
only their own. 09:09
So, we basically 09:12
need these apps to pay for anything in 09:15
China. People look at you like you are 09:21
crazy if you want to use cash. 09:27
It's not common at all. 09:32
We had set up these payment apps before, 09:36
but now the apps weren't working. 09:43
Our banks were rejecting 09:50
the payments. 09:53
We were so frustrated 09:55
and 09:59
exhausted. 10:01
It was 300 a.m. and we still 10:04
couldn't get any of the apps to work. 10:09
Finally, 10:15
I managed to use my Weay app to buy a 10:17
little pancake 10:25
from a vending machine. 10:28
And it worked. So, I figured 10:31
it works. 10:37
Let's go. 10:39
But now 10:41
we couldn't find the taxis. 10:43
We were walking back and forth, back and 10:49
forth, and we couldn't seem to find 10:53
them. 10:58
So I asked a guy. 11:00
I said, 11:04
to 11:09
excuse me, where are the taxis? 11:11
And he said 11:17
something. 11:20
He answered in full fast Chinese. 11:21
And he spoke for one full minute. 11:27
He gave me directions, 11:32
hand gestures, everything. I had no idea 11:36
what he said, but I was too embarrassed 11:43
to tell him that I didn't understand, 11:49
especially because I was so excited 11:55
that he understood my Chinese. 12:01
So I just smiled and said, 12:05
"Oh, okay. Thank you." 12:11
And I left. 12:15
Once my sister caught up 12:18
with me, I told her, "Okay, 12:23
follow me. It's this way." 12:27
So she followed me 12:32
and once we were far away from the man I 12:36
told her I didn't actually understand 12:42
what he said. She laughed at me. But 12:46
finally we found another man 12:53
and I asked him in English. Then we 12:59
found the taxis. We hopped in 13:05
and we were so 13:10
[sighs] 13:13
relieved. 13:14
We made it. 13:16
And I was so 13:19
shocked 13:22
at how fast the cars could go from zero 13:24
to 100 in a split second. 13:31
In a split second, the car would go from 13:37
zero to 100. 13:42
Then my sister informed me that China 13:45
actually has some of the fastest cars 13:52
in the world. It was something I didn't 13:58
know about China. We finally arrived at 14:03
our first hotel 14:08
near the airport 14:11
just to sleep. 14:14
And tomorrow we would book a new place 14:16
to stay. I scanned 14:21
my WeChat code to pay. 14:26
I sent the payment 14:30
and my card 14:34
rejected it. 14:37
We couldn't believe it. We had spent so 14:40
much time setting it up and we were back 14:46
to square one. 14:52
back exactly where we began. 14:56
We didn't know what to do. It was 15:02
120 RMBB. 15:08
So, we asked the receptionist 15:11
inside the hotel 15:16
to see if maybe she had some cash and we 15:18
could pay her back with our credit 15:24
cards. 15:28
She said no. 15:29
So, we asked the driver if maybe he 15:33
could drive us to a nearby bank 15:37
and we could take out some cash 15:44
and then pay him. He didn't speak 15:49
English, 15:54
but he was shaking his head. 15:56
No, no, no, no. So, we didn't know what 16:01
to do. 16:07
The receptionist 16:09
grabbed my sister's phone 16:11
and tried to use Alip Pay. We told her. 16:15
We already tried. 16:23
It doesn't work. But she tried anyway. 16:26
She sent herself 16:33
0.01 16:36
RMBB 16:38
and it worked. So we figured, oh, 16:40
maybe my sister's Alipay works. 16:46
Let's pay him. She sent 16:51
120 RMBB 16:56
and it was 16:59
rejected. 17:01
The payment did not go through again. 17:04
I had it up to here with my bank. 17:10
But 17:17
I realized 17:19
maybe we can make small payments. Maybe 17:21
smaller payments would go through 17:27
easier. So I sent him 17:32
10 RMBB and it went through. So I 17:37
started sending him 10 RMBB at a time. 17:43
10 then another 10 and another 10 17:50
until we finally completed the 120 17:56
plus a little tip. 18:03
But phew, 18:06
we could finally [gasps] 18:08
breathe. 18:12
We went inside the hotel and it was a 18:13
little scary. 18:19
I can't lie. A little dirty and smelly 18:21
and scary. 18:27
Straight out of a horror movie. But we 18:29
didn't even care at that point. We just 18:35
wanted to sleep. 18:41
When we finally got into our room, 18:45
I slammed my body on the bed 18:50
and I passed out. 18:55
It was 5 a.m. by then. 19:00
I slept so well that night. Once we woke 19:04
up, 19:10
I booked our next hotel 19:12
and we ordered an Uber to our hotel. 19:15
Now that it was finally working, we 19:21
arrived at the destination 19:25
that Google Maps marked. 19:29
But 19:33
Google Maps doesn't work well in China 19:35
either. So, the location 19:40
was wrong. 19:45
It had sent us about 19:48
17 minutes 19:52
away from our hotel. 19:55
Keep in mind we had two huge suitcases 19:58
and two backpacks. 20:06
But 20:09
we took a deep breath 20:11
and we began walking to our hotel. 20:17
We arrived at the second location. 20:23
It marked 20:27
and it was a McDonald's, 20:29
not a hotel. 20:34
The location was wrong again. [sighs] 20:37
So, at that point, I decided, 20:42
let's take an Uber. 20:47
I was fuming. 20:50
>> [gasps] 20:54
>> I seem like a happy, 20:54
positive person, but when I am stressed 20:59
out, 21:04
I am a whole different person. My sister 21:06
and I were so annoyed at each other at 21:12
that point. 21:18
I also understand 21:20
we were both super stressed out. 21:23
After 30 minutes of lugging around 21:28
our luggage, 21:35
we finally made it to our hotel. 21:37
I went to eat some delicious xiaolong 21:44
bao, 21:49
some crab row noodles, 21:52
and a crispy pancake. 21:55
So good. It has been one of the best 21:59
meals I have ever had. 22:04
I went back to our room. 22:10
I took a shower 22:14
and I went to sleep. 22:17
At night, I got a little bit hungry 22:21
again, so I walked outside 22:26
to Nanjing Road to get a snack. 22:31
And the streets were so alive, 22:36
full of colorful lights and food 22:43
everywhere. 22:48
Literally everywhere. 22:50
The next days in China were super fun. 22:53
I went for a run in People's Park 22:58
and I found the cutest little kiosk 23:04
to sit down and read. 23:09
I saw a lake with lily pads and cowi 23:12
flowers. 23:19
There were so many cats in China. 23:21
My sister loves cats. I try so much 23:28
food, 23:35
sweet and salty. 23:36
My sister and I talked about how soft 23:40
everything is in China. 23:48
The dumplings, 23:53
the mochi. 23:55
>> Why is everything so soft here? 23:59
>> Everything's so soft. But I like that 24:01
flavor more than the bean stuff we've 24:03
been getting in Thailand and Japan. This 24:05
tastes more Mexican. 24:06
>> The noodles, 24:09
it's all so 24:11
soft. 24:14
I love it. These soup dumplings. 24:16
Wow. 24:22
I bought a new hat. 24:27
It's red and warm and I love it. It's my 24:31
new favorite hat. And we had been eating 24:36
[snorts] so much Asian food. 24:41
We needed some Mexican food. 24:45
So I ordered a quesadilla. 24:50
In the evening 24:54
we went to see Yuan Garden 24:57
and that was something else. 25:03
I had never seen anything like that. You 25:09
could also see a skyscraper 25:14
touching the clouds. 25:18
It looked unreal 25:22
from a movie. 25:24
In Mexico, we have oritas, 25:27
little ears. 25:32
They're like sweet bread. 25:35
And I kept on seeing this bread in 25:38
China. 25:44
They looked a little different. 25:46
But I tried one 25:50
and they tasted really similar. 25:53
Interesting. 25:58
I was obsessed with Shaolong Bao on this 26:00
trip. 26:05
I had at least one order of Shaolong Bao 26:08
every day. 26:14
I had more sweets like caramelized 26:21
strawberries, 26:26
and we saw the bund, 26:29
a very unique view of buildings 26:35
right in front of the river. I would 26:40
love to live near that area. 26:45
I could go for runs every morning right 26:50
next to the river. 26:55
Nanjing road was busy all the time, 26:58
full of people 27:05
and being around so many people 27:08
can make me feel [sighs and gasps] 27:14
exhausted. 27:18
So to regain 27:19
our energy, 27:23
we got a hot pot. 27:25
It was so 27:30
spicy. 27:33
Our lips were on fire, but it was so 27:34
tasty 27:41
and flavorful. 27:43
Don't forget to like and subscribe to 27:46
practice English listening every day. I 27:50
also tried a pimmen. 27:55
That was interesting. 27:58
It tasted almost like a tomato 28:01
and a raisin 28:07
mixed together. 28:10
Then we saw the cutest car. 28:13
I want a car like that. One that doesn't 28:18
take so much space. Like those big 28:23
trucks that everyone has in the USA. 28:29
It's so unnecessary. 28:35
Like why do you need that much space? 28:38
You are one person. 28:45
We should all have tiny cars like this. 28:48
At this temple, there were so many 28:54
little red notes 28:58
with people's dreams and goals. 29:01
They wrote down, "I want to meet a 29:06
beautiful partner. I want to speak 29:11
fluent Chinese." 29:15
And hung them on the trees. What would 29:18
you write down on one of these notes? 29:22
What dream would you want to come 29:28
true? 29:33
These are protecting dragons. 29:35
One of them is a man and one of them is 29:40
a woman. You keep them in your house to 29:44
protect your house. It's supposed to 29:48
bring good luck 29:53
and good fortune. 29:57
I actually bought two little ones 30:01
to keep with me all the time. 30:06
On our last day, we checked out of our 30:11
hotel 30:16
and we moved to a different hotel 30:17
closer to the airport. 30:23
It was so cool. It was like a resort. 30:27
They had a theater to watch movies in, a 30:34
restaurant, 30:40
hot springs, 30:44
and an arcade. 30:46
We played Mario Kart, and I was number 30:50
one a lot. We snacked on popcorn 30:54
and chips and we ate a lot of food. We 31:00
were only in Shanghai 31:07
for 4 days. We did what we could with 31:10
the time we had, but I will definitely 31:16
apply for a visa to have a longer trip 31:21
next time. And let me know in the 31:27
comments if you would like to see more 31:30
of my trips in Asia. I have so many 31:35
students 31:40
from Somalia, Bangladesh, 31:42
Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, 31:46
Brazil, Morocco, 31:49
Turkey. It's crazy to see how diverse 31:52
my audience is, but I'm so proud of all 31:57
of you for sticking with me, for staying 32:04
consistent, and not only building your 32:09
English skills, 32:14
but also working on yourself. Please 32:16
never lose that motivation. 32:22
No matter what you do or where you are, 32:25
you can reach your goals if you set your 32:29
mind to it. If you're ready to take the 32:33
next step in your English learning 32:38
journey, then come practice speaking in 32:42
my English community to encourage you to 32:46
practice your English every day. See you 32:50
next time. Bye. 32:55

Hey everyone,
I recorded this episode before
everything that happened. Working on it
after the assault has helped me clear my
mind a little bit and it's reminded me

Hello

[music]
I love traveling.

So, get

Listen to slow English
while I tell you about my
stressful trip to China.
Last week
I went from Tokyo
to
Shanghai.
Our flight
left at 10 p.m. [clears throat]
and we arrived
in Shanghai
at 100 a.m.
So to make sure we caught our flight,
we left our hostel

zero to 100.
Then my sister informed me that China
actually has some of the fastest cars
in the world. It was something I didn't
know about China. We finally arrived at
our first hotel
near the airport
just to sleep.
And tomorrow we would book a new place
to stay. I scanned
my WeChat code to pay.
I sent the payment
and my card
rejected it.
We couldn't believe it. We had spent so
much time setting it up and we were back
to square one.
back exactly where we began.
We didn't know what to do. It was
120 RMBB.
So, we asked the receptionist
inside the hotel
to see if maybe she had some cash and we
could pay her back with our credit
cards.
She said no.
So, we asked the driver if maybe he
could drive us to a nearby bank
and we could take out some cash
and then pay him. He didn't speak
English,
but he was shaking his head.
No, no, no, no. So, we didn't know what
to do.
The receptionist
grabbed my sister's phone
and tried to use Alip Pay. We told her.
We already tried.
It doesn't work. But she tried anyway.
She sent herself
0.01
RMBB
and it worked. So we figured, oh,
maybe my sister's Alipay works.
Let's pay him. She sent
120 RMBB
and it was
rejected.
The payment did not go through again.
I had it up to here with my bank.
But
I realized
maybe we can make small payments. Maybe
smaller payments would go through
easier. So I sent him
10 RMBB and it went through. So I
started sending him 10 RMBB at a time.
10 then another 10 and another 10
until we finally completed the 120
plus a little tip.
But phew,
we could finally [gasps]
breathe.
We went inside the hotel and it was a
little scary.
I can't lie. A little dirty and smelly
and scary.
Straight out of a horror movie. But we
didn't even care at that point. We just
wanted to sleep.
When we finally got into our room,
I slammed my body on the bed
and I passed out.
It was 5 a.m. by then.
I slept so well that night. Once we woke
up,
I booked our next hotel
and we ordered an Uber to our hotel.
Now that it was finally working, we
arrived at the destination
that Google Maps marked.
But
Google Maps doesn't work well in China
either. So, the location
was wrong.
It had sent us about
17 minutes
away from our hotel.
Keep in mind we had two huge suitcases
and two backpacks.
But
we took a deep breath
and we began walking to our hotel.
We arrived at the second location.
It marked
and it was a McDonald's,
not a hotel.
The location was wrong again. [sighs]
So, at that point, I decided,
let's take an Uber.
I was fuming.
>> [gasps]
>> I seem like a happy,
positive person, but when I am stressed
out,
I am a whole different person. My sister
and I were so annoyed at each other at
that point.
I also understand
we were both super stressed out.
After 30 minutes of lugging around
our luggage,
we finally made it to our hotel.
I went to eat some delicious xiaolong
bao,
some crab row noodles,
and a crispy pancake.
So good. It has been one of the best
meals I have ever had.
I went back to our room.
I took a shower
and I went to sleep.
At night, I got a little bit hungry
again, so I walked outside
to Nanjing Road to get a snack.
And the streets were so alive,
full of colorful lights and food
everywhere.
Literally everywhere.
The next days in China were super fun.
I went for a run in People's Park
and I found the cutest little kiosk
to sit down and read.
I saw a lake with lily pads and cowi
flowers.
There were so many cats in China.
My sister loves cats. I try so much
food,
sweet and salty.
My sister and I talked about how soft
everything is in China.
The dumplings,
the mochi.
>> Why is everything so soft here?
>> Everything's so soft. But I like that
flavor more than the bean stuff we've
been getting in Thailand and Japan. This
tastes more Mexican.
>> The noodles,
it's all so
soft.
I love it. These soup dumplings.
Wow.
I bought a new hat.
It's red and warm and I love it. It's my
new favorite hat. And we had been eating
[snorts] so much Asian food.
We needed some Mexican food.
So I ordered a quesadilla.
In the evening
we went to see Yuan Garden
and that was something else.
I had never seen anything like that. You
could also see a skyscraper
touching the clouds.
It looked unreal
from a movie.
In Mexico, we have oritas,
little ears.
They're like sweet bread.
And I kept on seeing this bread in
China.
They looked a little different.
But I tried one
and they tasted really similar.
Interesting.
I was obsessed with Shaolong Bao on this
trip.
I had at least one order of Shaolong Bao
every day.
I had more sweets like caramelized
strawberries,
and we saw the bund,
a very unique view of buildings
right in front of the river. I would
love to live near that area.
I could go for runs every morning right
next to the river.
Nanjing road was busy all the time,
full of people
and being around so many people
can make me feel [sighs and gasps]
exhausted.
So to regain
our energy,
we got a hot pot.
It was so
spicy.
Our lips were on fire, but it was so
tasty
and flavorful.
Don't forget to like and subscribe to
practice English listening every day. I
also tried a pimmen.
That was interesting.
It tasted almost like a tomato
and a raisin
mixed together.
Then we saw the cutest car.
I want a car like that. One that doesn't
take so much space. Like those big
trucks that everyone has in the USA.
It's so unnecessary.
Like why do you need that much space?
You are one person.
We should all have tiny cars like this.
At this temple, there were so many
little red notes
with people's dreams and goals.
They wrote down, "I want to meet a
beautiful partner. I want to speak
fluent Chinese."
And hung them on the trees. What would
you write down on one of these notes?
What dream would you want to come
true?
These are protecting dragons.
One of them is a man and one of them is
a woman. You keep them in your house to
protect your house. It's supposed to
bring good luck
and good fortune.
I actually bought two little ones
to keep with me all the time.
On our last day, we checked out of our
hotel
and we moved to a different hotel
closer to the airport.
It was so cool. It was like a resort.
They had a theater to watch movies in, a
restaurant,
hot springs,
and an arcade.
We played Mario Kart, and I was number
one a lot. We snacked on popcorn
and chips and we ate a lot of food. We
were only in Shanghai
for 4 days. We did what we could with
the time we had, but I will definitely
apply for a visa to have a longer trip
next time. And let me know in the
comments if you would like to see more
of my trips in Asia. I have so many
students
