When you concentrate, 00:00
you stink. 00:02
But perhaps that is my fault. I cannot 00:04
train you the way I have trained the 00:06
five. 00:07
I now see that the way to get through to 00:09
you 00:11
is with this. 00:12
>> Oh, great, cuz I'm hungry. 00:13
>> Good. When you have been trained, you 00:17
may eat. 00:20
Let's begin. 00:22
>> Oh, yeah, global citizens. I'm Xenia, 00:27
your real life fluency coach. And in 00:30
today's lesson, we're going to learn 00:32
English with 00:34
training scenes from Kung Fu Panda. 00:37
>> [laughter] 00:40
>> Along the way, you learn everyday 00:41
expressions that natives actually use in 00:44
real situations, like lousy, months at a 00:47
time, [music] 00:52
and get through to someone. And to help 00:53
you learn and never forget these 00:56
important expressions, we want to give 00:58
you access to the smart flashcards we 01:00
created for this lesson for free. You 01:02
can practice with them in our app by 01:06
clicking the link below. [music] 01:08
Thousands of learners just like you are 01:09
learning to speak English fluently every 01:12
day and having fun while doing it. All 01:14
right. Now, we begin our story today in 01:18
the kitchen, where Po is cooking for the 01:20
Furious Five and [music] telling a story 01:22
to impress them, trying to sound a lot 01:25
braver than he really is. Let's watch 01:27
the first scene with subtitles in 01:30
English before we learn the advanced 01:32
words. 01:34
>> Yeah. Sound like fine. You may be a 01:41
wolf. You may be the scariest bandit in 01:43
Ha Jin province, 01:45
but you're a lousy tipper. 01:47
>> Really? So, how'd you get out of there 01:49
alive? 01:51
>> I mean, I didn't I I didn't actually say 01:53
that, 01:54
but I thought it 01:55
in in my mind. 01:57
If he could read my mind, he'd have been 01:59
like, "What? 02:01
Order up. Hope you like it." 02:02
>> This is really good. 02:07
>> No, come on. You should try my dad's 02:09
secret ingredient soup. He actually 02:10
knows the secret ingredient. 02:12
>> What are you talking about? Oh, this is 02:14
amazing. 02:16
>> Wow, you're really good cook. 02:16
>> my mouth was bigger. 02:18
>> Tigress, you've got to try this. 02:19
>> It is said that the Dragon Warrior can 02:22
survive for months at a time on nothing 02:23
but the dew of a single ginkgo leaf and 02:26
the energy of the universe. 02:28
>> I guess my body doesn't know it's the 02:31
Dragon Warrior yet. 02:33
>> [laughter] 02:35
>> I'm going to need a lot more than dew 02:35
and 02:37
universe juice. [snorts] 02:38
>> [laughter] 02:44
>> What? 02:44
>> Oh, nothing. 02:45
Master Shifu. 02:46
>> You'll never be the Dragon Warrior 02:51
unless you lose 500 lb and brush your 02:52
teeth. 02:54
>> [laughter] 02:55
>> What is that noise you're making? 02:56
Laughter? I never heard of it. Work 02:57
hard, Panda. Maybe someday 02:59
you will have ears like mine. 03:02
>> That's good. 03:06
Ears. 03:08
It's not working for you? I thought they 03:09
were pretty good. 03:10
>> It's Shifu. 03:11
>> Of course it's Shifu. What do you think 03:13
I'm doing? 03:14
Ooh, Master Shifu. 03:17
>> At the beginning of the scene, Po uses a 03:23
couple of words that are more advanced. 03:26
Did you catch those? 03:28
>> You may be the scariest bandit in Hunjin 03:29
Province, 03:31
but you're a lousy tipper. 03:32
>> If you say something is lousy, you mean 03:34
it's very bad or poor quality. For 03:38
example, you might say, "That was a 03:40
lousy movie." 03:43
"I had a lousy day." Or "He's a lousy 03:44
driver." 03:47
And a tipper is someone who gives a tip, 03:49
extra money given to workers to thank 03:52
them for good service. In certain 03:55
countries like the US, it's common to 03:57
tip 20% in restaurants. 04:00
So, a lousy tipper is someone who tips 04:03
very little or nothing at all. Now, 04:05
listen to how Crane responds. 04:08
>> Really? So, how'd you get out of there 04:10
alive? 04:13
>> Did you notice how the words how did you 04:14
get out of 04:17
flowed naturally here? 04:19
>> How'd you get out of there alive? 04:21
>> This is because it was full of connected 04:22
speech. The way natives connect to juice 04:24
and link [music] words together when 04:26
they speak. Let's break it down. It'll 04:28
be great for improving your 04:30
pronunciation. First, instead of how'd 04:32
you, he said how'd you. This is a common 04:34
pattern where there's a D and a Y 04:37
[music] 04:39
next to each other, you can morph them 04:40
into a ju sound. Listen to these 04:42
examples. 04:44
>> When did you make this decision? 04:45
>> And I told you it's over. 04:47
>> Next, a get out becomes get out. In 04:48
American English, the T becomes this 04:51
soft D sound when placed between vowels. 04:53
We call it flap T or the American T. 04:57
Like put on or it is. 05:00
Then, the word of becomes a simple uh 05:04
sound, another common pattern. 05:06
And finally, we hear the American T 05:09
again in out as it links to off. 05:11
Outta. 05:15
Outta. 05:16
Now, the entire phrase. 05:17
How'd you get outta? 05:19
How'd you get out of there alive? Now, 05:21
let's practice after Crane. 05:23
>> How'd you get out of there alive? How'd 05:25
you get out of there alive? 05:27
>> So, when Po finishes cooking, he uses a 05:33
specific expression. Check it out. 05:36
>> Order up. Hope you like it. 05:38
>> You'll hear this a lot in restaurants. 05:41
The cook yells order up to tell waiters 05:43
the dish is done and ready to be taken 05:46
to customers. 05:48
>> Order up. 05:49
>> Okay, order up. 05:50
>> Hey, number 11, order up. 05:53
>> This is really good. 05:55
>> No, come on. You should try my dad's 05:57
secret ingredient soup. He actually 05:59
knows the secret ingredient. 06:01
>> What are you talking about? Oh, this is 06:03
amazing. 06:04
>> And just another note on connected 06:05
speech. Here we have another common 06:07
pattern. What are you may sound like 06:09
what are you? We have the American T, 06:12
the word are being cut and the word you 06:14
being reduced to ya. Try to repeat. 06:17
>> What are you talking 06:20
>> What are you talking about? 06:21
>> Now, Tigress says something very 06:27
serious, almost like legend. 06:29
>> It is said that the Dragon Warrior can 06:31
survive for months at a time on nothing 06:33
but the dew of a single ginkgo leaf and 06:35
the energy of the universe. 06:38
>> It is said is a formal way to introduce 06:40
information that comes from common 06:42
belief. Tigress is referring to 06:45
legendary stories about the Dragon 06:47
Warrior. It's like saying people say or 06:49
according to tradition. 06:53
Check out this other example. 06:55
>> It is said that we humans use only a 06:56
tiny portion of our brains. 06:58
>> It is said that every man has three 07:00
tasks to accomplish in this world. 07:02
>> Okay, so it is said that practice makes 07:05
perfect. [music] 07:09
Have you ever heard that? Well, I really 07:10
want you to become that successful, 07:13
fluent English speaker you've always 07:15
dreamed of being. 07:17
However, I bet you feel lost about how 07:19
to do this. You feel too busy to 07:22
dedicate enough time to studying, right? 07:25
Or you've been stuck at the same level 07:28
forever. 07:30
And I know this because I've been there 07:32
myself. Remember, I'm an English learner 07:34
just like you. 07:36
So, let me share with you a method to go 07:38
from being a lost, insecure English 07:40
learner to becoming a confident, natural 07:43
English speaker, 07:46
even if you only have 10-15 minutes per 07:48
day. First, watch a short lesson like 07:51
this one with Kung Fu Panda. Second, 07:54
practice the new words from that lesson 07:56
with smart flashcards, which [music] use 07:58
science to help you remember new words 08:01
forever. And finally, third, speak the 08:04
new words in a real conversation so you 08:07
feel confident using them in any 08:10
situation. And practice pronunciation. 08:12
The great thing is we make it super easy 08:15
for you to do this all on the RealLife 08:18
App. And in fact, you can use the new 08:21
words you're learning today in a guided 08:23
speaking conversation based on this 08:26
exact lesson with Kung Fu Panda right 08:29
now. Stop just recognizing and 08:31
forgetting new words and start being 08:33
able to actually speak them naturally. 08:36
So, try it for free. Just click the link 08:39
in the description below. 08:42
>> It is said that the Dragon Warrior can 08:43
survive for months at a time on nothing 08:45
but the dew of a single ginkgo leaf and 08:47
the energy of the universe. 08:49
>> When you do something for months at a 08:51
time, you do it continuously for months 08:54
without stopping. For example, she 08:57
travels for weeks at a time. He works 09:00
for hours at a time without breaks. And 09:02
they disappear for days at a time. 09:05
>> He's been holed up in his room for days 09:08
at a time playing old video games. 09:10
>> My father would often disappear for 09:12
months at a time. 09:14
>> And dew is the tiny drop of water that 09:15
forms on plants, cars, [music] or any 09:18
surfaces overnight when the air cools 09:20
down. A ginkgo leaf is a leaf from the 09:23
ginkgo tree, an ancient tree species 09:26
with distinctive fan-shaped leaves. 09:28
Okay, so right after this, Po starts 09:31
doing an impersonation of Master Shifu. 09:33
An impersonation is when you copy the 09:37
way someone talks and moves, usually in 09:39
an exaggerated or funny way. 09:42
>> You'll never be the Dragon Warrior 09:44
unless you lose 500 lbs and brush your 09:45
teeth. 09:48
>> Pounds is a unit of weight used in the 09:49
United States, abbreviated as lb. While 09:51
most of the world uses [music] 09:54
kilograms, Americans measure body weight 09:56
in pounds. 1 lb equals about 0.45 kg, 09:59
which means 100 lbs is about 45 kilos. 10:05
So, keep in mind, if you are talking 10:10
about weight with Americans, they'll use 10:11
pounds, not kilograms. So, the fun 10:14
doesn't last long. Shifu arrives and 10:17
brings shocking news. Tai Lung, a 10:21
powerful and dangerous Kung Fu warrior, 10:24
has escaped from prison. And he's coming 10:26
for the Dragon Scroll. And suddenly, 10:29
everything becomes real for Po. This 10:32
isn't just a joke anymore. He was chosen 10:35
to be the Dragon Warrior, and now he 10:38
actually has to face a real enemy. Now, 10:41
the next day, Shifu is still thinking 10:44
about this, about Tai Lung, [music] and 10:46
about Po. And when he goes looking for 10:49
him, 10:52
he finds him in the kitchen. 10:53
>> [snorts] 11:19
>> What? 11:34
I eat when I'm upset, okay? 11:36
>> Oh, no need to explain. 11:39
I just thought you might be Monkey. He 11:41
hides his almond cookies on the top 11:42
shelf. 11:44
>> An almond is a type of nut, like this. 11:45
It has a hard shell, but it's creamy 11:48
inside. It's commonly used in cookies 11:50
and desserts. 11:52
This is a shelf, and [music] the top 11:54
shelf is the highest shelf, hardest to 11:56
reach. 11:59
>> Don't tell Monkey. 12:20
Look at you. 12:22
>> Yeah, I know. I disgust you. 12:23
>> No, no. I mean, how did you get up 12:25
there? 12:27
>> I don't know. I 12:28
guess 12:30
I don't know. I was getting a cookie. 12:31
>> And yet you are 10 ft off the ground 12:34
and have done a perfect split. 12:37
>> Feet in this case is a measurement of 12:39
height. 12:41
>> [music] 12:41
>> Americans use feet instead of meters. 10 12:42
ft is about 3 m. If something is 10 ft 12:44
off the ground, it's 3 m above the 12:48
floor. Shifu is surprised that Po is 12:51
actually doing a perfect split. 12:54
A split is when you spread your legs 12:57
wide apart like gymnasts and martial 12:59
artists do. A perfect split means your 13:01
legs are completely flat, 180° of 13:04
height. 13:08
>> Now, this 13:10
This is just a 13:12
AN ACCIDENT. 13:14
THERE ARE NO ACCIDENTS. 13:19
Come with me. 13:22
>> So, after seeing what Po could do in the 13:24
kitchen, Shifu realizes something very 13:27
important. In the next scene, he decides 13:30
to try a completely different way of 13:32
training him. Let's watch it. 13:34
>> When you concentrate, 13:42
you stink. 13:44
But perhaps that is my fault. [music] 13:46
I cannot train you the way I have 13:47
trained the Five. 13:49
I now see that the way to get through to 13:51
you 13:53
is with 13:54
>> Oh, great. Cuz I'm hungry. 13:55
>> [laughter] 13:59
>> Good. When you have been trained, you 14:00
may eat. 14:02
>> [clears throat] 14:03
>> Let's begin. 14:04
>> [screaming] 14:11
[music] 14:34
[screaming and groaning] 14:41
[music] 14:51
>> After you, Panda. 14:59
>> Just like that? 15:01
No situps, no no no no no 10-mile hike? 15:03
>> I vowed to train you, and you have been 15:06
trained. You are free to eat. 15:08
Enjoy. 15:16
>> Hey. 15:19
>> I said you are free to eat. Have a 15:21
dumpling. 15:23
>> Hey. 15:26
Listen to what Shifu says in the 15:35
beginning of Po's training. 15:37
>> When you concentrate, 15:39
you stink. 15:41
>> What do you think stink means here? 15:43
Smell bad, 15:46
being terrible at something, or become 15:48
nervous. 15:51
Literally, if you stink, you smell bad. 16:00
>> [snorts] 16:04
>> But here, it's figurative. When you say 16:04
someone stinks at something, you mean 16:07
they're really bad at it. They perform 16:10
poorly. [music] For example, I stink at 16:12
math. 16:15
He stinks at cooking. She stinks at 16:17
dancing. 16:19
>> But perhaps that is my fault. 16:21
>> Perhaps means maybe or possibly. 16:22
>> Don't turn your back on me, Scar. 16:26
>> Oh, no, Mufasa. Perhaps you shouldn't 16:28
turn your back on me. 16:31
>> It's commonly used in more polite 16:33
speech. 16:35
>> But perhaps that is my fault. I cannot 16:36
train you the way I have trained the 16:38
five. 16:40
I now see that the way to get through to 16:41
you 16:43
is with this. 16:44
>> To get through to someone means to 16:45
successfully communicate with them or 16:47
make them understand something. When you 16:50
finally get through to someone, you're 16:52
breaking through their resistance or 16:55
confusion, and they finally understand 16:57
what you're trying to tell them. 17:00
Shifu is saying he's figured out how to 17:02
teach Po effectively by using food as 17:04
motivation. 17:07
So, Po goes through a few days of 17:09
intense training and finally arrives at 17:11
the moment where Shifu will let him eat. 17:13
>> After you, Panda. 17:17
>> After you is a polite phrase meaning you 17:18
go first or you [music] start first. 17:22
It's a gesture of courtesy, letting 17:24
someone else take the first turn. 17:27
>> After you, Claude. 17:29
>> No, after you, Cecil. 17:30
>> No, after you, Claude. 17:31
>> No, after you, Cecil. 17:32
>> After you, Claude. 17:33
>> on. 17:34
>> Just like that? 17:35
No sit-ups? No No No No No 10-mile hike? 17:36
>> A sit-up is an exercise where you lie on 17:40
your back and lift your upper body up 17:42
towards your knees repeatedly to 17:45
strengthen your stomach muscles. You 17:48
also have push-ups and pull-ups, which 17:50
are very common exercises. 17:52
So, we've talked about pounds for weight 17:55
and feet for height and short distances, 17:58
but what if we're talking about longer 18:01
distances? How do the Americans talk 18:03
about it? That's where miles come in. 1 18:06
mile is about 1.6 km. 2 miles is a 18:09
little over 3 km. 18:13
>> I vowed to train you, and you have been 18:15
trained. You are free to eat. 18:17
>> To vow means to make a serious promise 18:21
or commitment. When you vow to do 18:23
something, you're promising to do it no 18:26
matter what. Check out this example. 18:28
>> But when the strangers left, they vowed 18:31
to return. 18:33
>> When I adopted Sherman, I vowed to be 18:35
the best father I could be, to prepare 18:36
him for all the wonders of the world, 18:39
present and past. 18:41
>> You are free to eat. 18:43
>> This is a phrase commonly used to give 18:45
others permission to do something, like 18:47
there's nothing stopping you. You're 18:50
free to ask questions. [music] 18:52
You're free to leave. 18:54
>> Well, now you're free to go back to your 18:55
business. 18:58
>> Okay, you're free to go. Enjoy your 18:59
trip. 19:00
>> I said you are free to eat. Have a 19:01
dumpling. 19:03
>> A dumpling is a small piece of food made 19:04
from dough, usually filled with meat or 19:06
vegetables. They're very common in many 19:09
cultures in Ukrainian, Polish, and 19:12
Chinese cuisine. Now, notice the 19:14
structure Shifu used. 19:16
>> Have a dumpling. 19:18
>> Have a food or have a drink is a common 19:19
phrase used to offer something to 19:22
someone. It's an invitation to take and 19:24
consume something. Have a cookie. Have a 19:26
seat. Have some cake. It's friendly and 19:29
casual. So, Shifu finally finds a way to 19:32
train [music] Po and from here Po starts 19:35
to become the Dragon Warrior he's meant 19:38
to be. Now, are you ready to the final 19:41
and most important step of the lesson? 19:43
We're going to take everything you've 19:46
just learned, the new vocabulary and 19:48
pronunciation, and put it into practice. 19:50
You'll watch the whole scene again, this 19:53
time without subtitles, and answer some 19:55
quiz questions. Let's do it. 19:58
>> You may be the scariest bandit in Hazing 20:06
Province, 20:08
but you're a lousy tipper. 20:09
>> Really? 20:11
>> What does lousy mean in this context? 20:12
Slightly disappointing? 20:15
Poor quality? 20:17
Unusual but interesting? 20:18
>> So, how'd you get out of there alive? 20:29
I mean, I didn't I didn't I didn't 20:32
actually say that, 20:33
but I I thought it 20:35
in in my mind. 20:36
If he could read my mind, he'd have been 20:38
like, "What?" 20:40
Order up. Hope you like it. 20:42
>> This is really good. 20:46
>> No, come on. And you should try my dad's 20:48
secret ingredient soup. He actually 20:50
knows the secret ingredient. 20:52
>> What are you talking about? Oh, this is 20:54
amazing. 20:55
>> Wow, you're a really good cook. 20:56
>> my mouth was bigger. 20:58
>> Tigress, you've got to try this. 20:59
>> Mhm. 21:01
>> It is said that the Dragon Warrior can 21:01
survive for months at a time on nothing 21:03
but the dew of a single ginkgo leaf and 21:05
the energy of the universe. 21:07
>> Which sentence uses at a time correctly? 21:10
He traveled for months at a time without 21:13
taking breaks. 21:16
I studied many subjects at a time 21:17
yesterday. She worked at a time when she 21:19
was tired. 21:22
>> I guess my body doesn't know it's the 21:32
Dragon Warrior yet. 21:34
>> [laughter] 21:35
>> I'm going to need a lot more than dew 21:36
and 21:38
universe juice. 21:39
>> What? 21:45
>> Oh, nothing. 21:46
Master Shifu. 21:47
>> [laughter] 21:49
>> YOU'LL NEVER BE THE DRAGON WARRIOR 21:51
unless you lose 500 lb and brush your 21:53
teeth. 21:55
>> [laughter] 21:56
>> What is that noise you're making? 21:56
Laughter? I never heard of it. Work 21:58
hard, Panda, and maybe someday 22:00
you will have ears like mine. 22:03

Lyrics & Translation

[English]
When you concentrate,
you stink.
But perhaps that is my fault. I cannot
train you the way I have trained the
five.
I now see that the way to get through to
you
is with this.
>> Oh, great, cuz I'm hungry.
>> Good. When you have been trained, you
may eat.
Let's begin.
>> Oh, yeah, global citizens. I'm Xenia,
your real life fluency coach. And in
today's lesson, we're going to learn
English with
training scenes from Kung Fu Panda.
>> [laughter]
>> Along the way, you learn everyday
expressions that natives actually use in
real situations, like lousy, months at a
time, [music]
and get through to someone. And to help
you learn and never forget these
important expressions, we want to give
you access to the smart flashcards we
created for this lesson for free. You
can practice with them in our app by
clicking the link below. [music]
Thousands of learners just like you are
learning to speak English fluently every
day and having fun while doing it. All
right. Now, we begin our story today in
the kitchen, where Po is cooking for the
Furious Five and [music] telling a story
to impress them, trying to sound a lot
braver than he really is. Let's watch
the first scene with subtitles in
English before we learn the advanced
words.
>> Yeah. Sound like fine. You may be a
wolf. You may be the scariest bandit in
Ha Jin province,
but you're a lousy tipper.
>> Really? So, how'd you get out of there
alive?
>> I mean, I didn't I I didn't actually say
that,
but I thought it
in in my mind.
If he could read my mind, he'd have been
like, "What?
Order up. Hope you like it."
>> This is really good.
>> No, come on. You should try my dad's
secret ingredient soup. He actually
knows the secret ingredient.
>> What are you talking about? Oh, this is
amazing.
>> Wow, you're really good cook.
>> my mouth was bigger.
>> Tigress, you've got to try this.
>> It is said that the Dragon Warrior can
survive for months at a time on nothing
but the dew of a single ginkgo leaf and
the energy of the universe.
>> I guess my body doesn't know it's the
Dragon Warrior yet.
>> [laughter]
>> I'm going to need a lot more than dew
and
universe juice. [snorts]
>> [laughter]
>> What?
>> Oh, nothing.
Master Shifu.
>> You'll never be the Dragon Warrior
unless you lose 500 lb and brush your
teeth.
>> [laughter]
>> What is that noise you're making?
Laughter? I never heard of it. Work
hard, Panda. Maybe someday
you will have ears like mine.
>> That's good.
Ears.
It's not working for you? I thought they
were pretty good.
>> It's Shifu.
>> Of course it's Shifu. What do you think
I'm doing?
Ooh, Master Shifu.
>> At the beginning of the scene, Po uses a
couple of words that are more advanced.
Did you catch those?
>> You may be the scariest bandit in Hunjin
Province,
but you're a lousy tipper.
>> If you say something is lousy, you mean
it's very bad or poor quality. For
example, you might say, "That was a
lousy movie."
"I had a lousy day." Or "He's a lousy
driver."
And a tipper is someone who gives a tip,
extra money given to workers to thank
them for good service. In certain
countries like the US, it's common to
tip 20% in restaurants.
So, a lousy tipper is someone who tips
very little or nothing at all. Now,
listen to how Crane responds.
>> Really? So, how'd you get out of there
alive?
>> Did you notice how the words how did you
get out of
flowed naturally here?
>> How'd you get out of there alive?
>> This is because it was full of connected
speech. The way natives connect to juice
and link [music] words together when
they speak. Let's break it down. It'll
be great for improving your
pronunciation. First, instead of how'd
you, he said how'd you. This is a common
pattern where there's a D and a Y
[music]
next to each other, you can morph them
into a ju sound. Listen to these
examples.
>> When did you make this decision?
>> And I told you it's over.
>> Next, a get out becomes get out. In
American English, the T becomes this
soft D sound when placed between vowels.
We call it flap T or the American T.
Like put on or it is.
Then, the word of becomes a simple uh
sound, another common pattern.
And finally, we hear the American T
again in out as it links to off.
Outta.
Outta.
Now, the entire phrase.
How'd you get outta?
How'd you get out of there alive? Now,
let's practice after Crane.
>> How'd you get out of there alive? How'd
you get out of there alive?
>> So, when Po finishes cooking, he uses a
specific expression. Check it out.
>> Order up. Hope you like it.
>> You'll hear this a lot in restaurants.
The cook yells order up to tell waiters
the dish is done and ready to be taken
to customers.
>> Order up.
>> Okay, order up.
>> Hey, number 11, order up.
>> This is really good.
>> No, come on. You should try my dad's
secret ingredient soup. He actually
knows the secret ingredient.
>> What are you talking about? Oh, this is
amazing.
>> And just another note on connected
speech. Here we have another common
pattern. What are you may sound like
what are you? We have the American T,
the word are being cut and the word you
being reduced to ya. Try to repeat.
>> What are you talking
>> What are you talking about?
>> Now, Tigress says something very
serious, almost like legend.
>> It is said that the Dragon Warrior can
survive for months at a time on nothing
but the dew of a single ginkgo leaf and
the energy of the universe.
>> It is said is a formal way to introduce
information that comes from common
belief. Tigress is referring to
legendary stories about the Dragon
Warrior. It's like saying people say or
according to tradition.
Check out this other example.
>> It is said that we humans use only a
tiny portion of our brains.
>> It is said that every man has three
tasks to accomplish in this world.
>> Okay, so it is said that practice makes
perfect. [music]
Have you ever heard that? Well, I really
want you to become that successful,
fluent English speaker you've always
dreamed of being.
However, I bet you feel lost about how
to do this. You feel too busy to
dedicate enough time to studying, right?
Or you've been stuck at the same level
forever.
And I know this because I've been there
myself. Remember, I'm an English learner
just like you.
So, let me share with you a method to go
from being a lost, insecure English
learner to becoming a confident, natural
English speaker,
even if you only have 10-15 minutes per
day. First, watch a short lesson like
this one with Kung Fu Panda. Second,
practice the new words from that lesson
with smart flashcards, which [music] use
science to help you remember new words
forever. And finally, third, speak the
new words in a real conversation so you
feel confident using them in any
situation. And practice pronunciation.
The great thing is we make it super easy
for you to do this all on the RealLife
App. And in fact, you can use the new
words you're learning today in a guided
speaking conversation based on this
exact lesson with Kung Fu Panda right
now. Stop just recognizing and
forgetting new words and start being
able to actually speak them naturally.
So, try it for free. Just click the link
in the description below.
>> It is said that the Dragon Warrior can
survive for months at a time on nothing
but the dew of a single ginkgo leaf and
the energy of the universe.
>> When you do something for months at a
time, you do it continuously for months
without stopping. For example, she
travels for weeks at a time. He works
for hours at a time without breaks. And
they disappear for days at a time.
>> He's been holed up in his room for days
at a time playing old video games.
>> My father would often disappear for
months at a time.
>> And dew is the tiny drop of water that
forms on plants, cars, [music] or any
surfaces overnight when the air cools
down. A ginkgo leaf is a leaf from the
ginkgo tree, an ancient tree species
with distinctive fan-shaped leaves.
Okay, so right after this, Po starts
doing an impersonation of Master Shifu.
An impersonation is when you copy the
way someone talks and moves, usually in
an exaggerated or funny way.
>> You'll never be the Dragon Warrior
unless you lose 500 lbs and brush your
teeth.
>> Pounds is a unit of weight used in the
United States, abbreviated as lb. While
most of the world uses [music]
kilograms, Americans measure body weight
in pounds. 1 lb equals about 0.45 kg,
which means 100 lbs is about 45 kilos.
So, keep in mind, if you are talking
about weight with Americans, they'll use
pounds, not kilograms. So, the fun
doesn't last long. Shifu arrives and
brings shocking news. Tai Lung, a
powerful and dangerous Kung Fu warrior,
has escaped from prison. And he's coming
for the Dragon Scroll. And suddenly,
everything becomes real for Po. This
isn't just a joke anymore. He was chosen
to be the Dragon Warrior, and now he
actually has to face a real enemy. Now,
the next day, Shifu is still thinking
about this, about Tai Lung, [music] and
about Po. And when he goes looking for
him,
he finds him in the kitchen.
>> [snorts]
>> What?
I eat when I'm upset, okay?
>> Oh, no need to explain.
I just thought you might be Monkey. He
hides his almond cookies on the top
shelf.
>> An almond is a type of nut, like this.
It has a hard shell, but it's creamy
inside. It's commonly used in cookies
and desserts.
This is a shelf, and [music] the top
shelf is the highest shelf, hardest to
reach.
>> Don't tell Monkey.
Look at you.
>> Yeah, I know. I disgust you.
>> No, no. I mean, how did you get up
there?
>> I don't know. I
guess
I don't know. I was getting a cookie.
>> And yet you are 10 ft off the ground
and have done a perfect split.
>> Feet in this case is a measurement of
height.
>> [music]
>> Americans use feet instead of meters. 10
ft is about 3 m. If something is 10 ft
off the ground, it's 3 m above the
floor. Shifu is surprised that Po is
actually doing a perfect split.
A split is when you spread your legs
wide apart like gymnasts and martial
artists do. A perfect split means your
legs are completely flat, 180° of
height.
>> Now, this
This is just a
AN ACCIDENT.
THERE ARE NO ACCIDENTS.
Come with me.
>> So, after seeing what Po could do in the
kitchen, Shifu realizes something very
important. In the next scene, he decides
to try a completely different way of
training him. Let's watch it.
>> When you concentrate,
you stink.
But perhaps that is my fault. [music]
I cannot train you the way I have
trained the Five.
I now see that the way to get through to
you
is with
>> Oh, great. Cuz I'm hungry.
>> [laughter]
>> Good. When you have been trained, you
may eat.
>> [clears throat]
>> Let's begin.
>> [screaming]
[music]
[screaming and groaning]
[music]
>> After you, Panda.
>> Just like that?
No situps, no no no no no 10-mile hike?
>> I vowed to train you, and you have been
trained. You are free to eat.
Enjoy.
>> Hey.
>> I said you are free to eat. Have a
dumpling.
>> Hey.
Listen to what Shifu says in the
beginning of Po's training.
>> When you concentrate,
you stink.
>> What do you think stink means here?
Smell bad,
being terrible at something, or become
nervous.
Literally, if you stink, you smell bad.
>> [snorts]
>> But here, it's figurative. When you say
someone stinks at something, you mean
they're really bad at it. They perform
poorly. [music] For example, I stink at
math.
He stinks at cooking. She stinks at
dancing.
>> But perhaps that is my fault.
>> Perhaps means maybe or possibly.
>> Don't turn your back on me, Scar.
>> Oh, no, Mufasa. Perhaps you shouldn't
turn your back on me.
>> It's commonly used in more polite
speech.
>> But perhaps that is my fault. I cannot
train you the way I have trained the
five.
I now see that the way to get through to
you
is with this.
>> To get through to someone means to
successfully communicate with them or
make them understand something. When you
finally get through to someone, you're
breaking through their resistance or
confusion, and they finally understand
what you're trying to tell them.
Shifu is saying he's figured out how to
teach Po effectively by using food as
motivation.
So, Po goes through a few days of
intense training and finally arrives at
the moment where Shifu will let him eat.
>> After you, Panda.
>> After you is a polite phrase meaning you
go first or you [music] start first.
It's a gesture of courtesy, letting
someone else take the first turn.
>> After you, Claude.
>> No, after you, Cecil.
>> No, after you, Claude.
>> No, after you, Cecil.
>> After you, Claude.
>> on.
>> Just like that?
No sit-ups? No No No No No 10-mile hike?
>> A sit-up is an exercise where you lie on
your back and lift your upper body up
towards your knees repeatedly to
strengthen your stomach muscles. You
also have push-ups and pull-ups, which
are very common exercises.
So, we've talked about pounds for weight
and feet for height and short distances,
but what if we're talking about longer
distances? How do the Americans talk
about it? That's where miles come in. 1
mile is about 1.6 km. 2 miles is a
little over 3 km.
>> I vowed to train you, and you have been
trained. You are free to eat.
>> To vow means to make a serious promise
or commitment. When you vow to do
something, you're promising to do it no
matter what. Check out this example.
>> But when the strangers left, they vowed
to return.
>> When I adopted Sherman, I vowed to be
the best father I could be, to prepare
him for all the wonders of the world,
present and past.
>> You are free to eat.
>> This is a phrase commonly used to give
others permission to do something, like
there's nothing stopping you. You're
free to ask questions. [music]
You're free to leave.
>> Well, now you're free to go back to your
business.
>> Okay, you're free to go. Enjoy your
trip.
>> I said you are free to eat. Have a
dumpling.
>> A dumpling is a small piece of food made
from dough, usually filled with meat or
vegetables. They're very common in many
cultures in Ukrainian, Polish, and
Chinese cuisine. Now, notice the
structure Shifu used.
>> Have a dumpling.
>> Have a food or have a drink is a common
phrase used to offer something to
someone. It's an invitation to take and
consume something. Have a cookie. Have a
seat. Have some cake. It's friendly and
casual. So, Shifu finally finds a way to
train [music] Po and from here Po starts
to become the Dragon Warrior he's meant
to be. Now, are you ready to the final
and most important step of the lesson?
We're going to take everything you've
just learned, the new vocabulary and
pronunciation, and put it into practice.
You'll watch the whole scene again, this
time without subtitles, and answer some
quiz questions. Let's do it.
>> You may be the scariest bandit in Hazing
Province,
but you're a lousy tipper.
>> Really?
>> What does lousy mean in this context?
Slightly disappointing?
Poor quality?
Unusual but interesting?
>> So, how'd you get out of there alive?
I mean, I didn't I didn't I didn't
actually say that,
but I I thought it
in in my mind.
