Do you need to be religious to become a 00:00
Buddhist? Well, that depends on what you 00:02
mean by becoming religious. For many 00:06
people becoming religious or the word 00:09
religion brings the memories of rigid 00:12
traditions and unquestionable faith and 00:14
also imposed beliefs and a set of rules 00:17
that are made not because they they make 00:21
sense but because they're coming from an 00:23
ancient scripture, ancient text. In that 00:26
approach, Buddhism is different. Buddha 00:30
did not claim himself to be a god. 00:33
Buddha never asked for worship from 00:35
people and also Buddha never demanded 00:38
blind faith from people. Instead he 00:40
offered a path of self-realization and 00:43
self-exloration and a path that everyone 00:46
must follow by themsel right in one of 00:50
his most famous sutras kalama sutra with 00:54
the meets a group of people who was 00:57
confused that they met a lot of 00:59
spiritual teachers and everyone they 01:02
meet they claim themselves to be to know 01:04
the ultimate truth and then they ask 01:07
this question from the Buddha. Who 01:11
should we believe? What spiritual leader 01:13
and what spiritual teaching should we 01:16
believe? 01:18
The Buddha's answer was quite 01:20
surprising. The Buddha said, "Do not 01:21
just reject an idea or believe in an 01:24
idea just because it is coming from an 01:28
ancient scripture." 01:31
And also do not reject an idea or 01:33
believe an idea just because it is your 01:35
tradition. And also remember that do not 01:37
believe and reject an idea just because 01:41
your teacher said it so. Instead test 01:44
it, live it, observe it and see it for 01:48
yourself. 01:52
Is this idea brings happiness to my 01:54
life? Is this idea is bringing happiness 01:58
to my life and to the others? Is this 02:00
idea works for well-being and for the 02:03
benefit of myself and to the others? If 02:06
it is a yes, then by all means hold on 02:09
to that practice. Hold on to that idea 02:12
and do it. But if an idea brings 02:14
suffering and unhappiness and pain and 02:17
suffering to your life and to the 02:20
others, then the Buddha said, "Let it 02:22
go." So understand Buddhism doesn't need 02:25
blind faith. What Buddhism need is the 02:30
confidence to practice it. So you may 02:33
ask if Buddhism isn't about blind faith. 02:36
What is it about? Call it a religion, 02:41
call it a philosophy, call it 02:44
spirituality, 02:46
labels don't matter. What matters the 02:47
most is what you practice. 02:50
If you're practicing love and kindness 02:54
that is unbound and unconditional for 02:56
every sentient being in this world, 02:58
you're practicing the Buddhist path. If 03:01
you're practicing the mindfulness and 03:04
awareness to seek the truth within 03:05
yourself, then you are practicing the 03:07
Buddhist path. So Buddhism is not about 03:09
whether you call yourself a Buddhist. It 03:12
is about whether you are choosing your 03:15
life to live, choosing to live your life 03:18
with wisdom and compassion and kindness 03:20
and with more clarity. Right? Just keep 03:23
in mind that even the Buddha started 03:26
this journey not as someone who was 03:28
enlightened. First the Buddha was before 03:31
becoming the Buddha, he was living in a 03:35
palace. He was living in a royal life. 03:38
He he lived a a luxurious life. He was 03:40
born for the to wealth. Right? And then 03:43
he understood that living within these 03:46
material pleasures, becoming busy with 03:48
these material pleasures doesn't help me 03:51
to seek the truth, doesn't help me to 03:53
seek the peace that I'm looking for. So 03:55
what he did was he renounced his life 03:58
and he fell into the other extreme where 04:01
he practiced the self-denial, 04:05
right? He tortured his body. He starved 04:07
his body. And then he understood that 04:10
even self-denial, this extreme doesn't 04:14
help to practice and to find the peace 04:17
within myself. And then only he found 04:20
out this middle path, this balanced life 04:24
where you you do not indulge yourself in 04:27
the sensual pleasure and also you do not 04:31
deny anything. You do not you do not 04:34
deny yourself. Right? So this is the 04:36
essence of Buddhism. Not falling into 04:40
any kind of extremes. Not falling into 04:42
any kind of extreme beliefs. And it is 04:45
more about finding what works for you. 04:47
Finding what brings the peace and 04:51
happiness to yourself and to the others. 04:53
If Buddhism brings the peace and 04:57
happiness to your life, you have to 04:59
practice it. You can practice it. You're 05:01
free to practice it. Right? And also the 05:03
Buddha said everyone is open to come and 05:05
see it for yourself. This is the most 05:09
important thing in Buddhism. The Buddha 05:12
says see it for yourself. Put it into 05:13
practice and understand and then you 05:16
will realize the peace of this practice 05:20
and the value of this practice. So keep 05:24
it in your mind. In Buddhism you don't 05:26
need to believe anything blindly. You 05:28
don't need to accept any traditions or 05:31
dogmas. What you need to do is try to be 05:34
more kind. Try to practice more kindness 05:37
and compassion within your heart and 05:40
also try to be aware of your thoughts 05:43
and try to live with intentions rather 05:46
than being carried away with the habits 05:49
and emotions. Right? So if if it works 05:51
for you, if it helps for you and if it 05:54
brings the happiness to your life, then 05:57
practice it. If it doesn't, let it go. 05:59
All right? So this is the difference in 06:02
Buddhist practice. So in the end the 06:05
question is not whether you call 06:08
yourself a Buddhist or not whether you 06:11
call yourself religious. It is about are 06:13
you willing to practice? Are you ready 06:17
to practice? Right? And how are you 06:18
ready to say it by yourself? So keep 06:21
this valuable idea in your mind and then 06:25
you'll be able to understand Buddhism 06:28
more clearly. I wish you all may you be 06:30
happy and may you be healthy and may you 06:33
be able to live in peace in this life. 06:37
side. 06:40
