hello 00:07
everybody good morning good afternoon 00:08
good evening my name is teacher Rich for 00:11
Oxford online English and today we are 00:14
talking about the Christian in 00:17
Christmas often you get lessons around 00:22
about this time of year which focus on 00:26
Christmas around the world or the Pagan 00:29
traditions of Christmas or stuff like 00:32
that my camera is really not that good 00:35
today is 00:38
it and I decided you know let's go back 00:39
to root Source kind of and talk about 00:43
Christian 00:47
Christmas so what are the Christian 00:48
elements of 00:51
Christmas I think last year I did the 00:53
Pagan and the old English elements of 00:56
Christmas there's plent plenty of those 00:58
like that stuff and that there they are 01:01
from Pagan Traditions but let's talk 01:06
about the the Christian Traditions the 01:09
Christian in 01:11
Christmas so hello to everybody in the 01:15
chat today and let me show you a 01:17
picture so have a look at these two 01:21
pictures which of these is your idea of 01:23
Christmas so which of these is more your 01:27
idea of 01:30

a difference there in the decorations 02:37
mhm and L AA says I like your 02:42

that we have a nativity scene the first 03:51
picture looks more ancient style ancient 03:54
is not the correct word 03:59
here traditional 04:02
oldfashioned stuff like 04:08
that and no political messages in the 04:17
chat 04:20

about 13:25
these I want you to 13:27
listen and type the 13:30
keywords listen and type keywords so get 13:33

I typed it in the chat it's c h r i s t 14:11
i n g l e 14:15
christingle okay listen and type the 14:18
keywords that you 14:21
hear 14:27
the Chris Dingle service a relatively 14:32
recent tradition begun by the morovian 14:34
church in the 18th century is a unique 14:37
and symbolic celebration the word 14:41
christingle means Christ Light and 14:44
represents Jesus as the light of the 14:48
world the service involves creating a 14:50
christingle an orange representing the 14:54
world a red ribbon symbolizing the blood 14:57
of Christ fruits and sweets on sticks 15:01
signifying God's creations and a lit 15:05
candle at the center of the orange 15:08
embodying Jesus's light participating in 15:11
this service is a profound experience a 15:15
tactile reminder of God's love for the 15:18
world and the hope that Jesus's birth 15:21
brings to 15:24
humanity 15:27
let's see what you've got in the chat 15:31
then so the morovian church Santos how 15:33
did you hear that and how did you spell 15:36
it 15:39
correctly how did you do that are you 15:40
using like caption 15:42
software recent tradition very good well 15:45
done Sonia unique and symbolic that's a 15:48
good one the symbolic celebration the 15:51
light of the world a lit candle the 15:55
blood of 15:58
Christ M very 15:59
good orange represents God and 16:02
creation a lit Candle on the body 16:07
profound experience very good and I'll 16:09
just show you the script here so there's 16:12
the script for you if you wish if you 16:14
wish to see that it's right 16:16
there and that will be in the notes for 16:24
today so that's the 16:27
christingle quite a recent tradition 16:31
actually the christingle started by the 16:34
morovian 16:36
church I have no idea what the morovian 16:37
church is what is the morovian church 16:40
does anyone know the morovian 16:43
church uh is one of the oldest 16:45
Protestant 16:48
denominations dating back to the 16:50
Bohemian Reformation of the 15th 16:52
century 60 years before Lutheran 16:54
Reformation 16:58
wow that is an old 16:59
Reformation our lamb has conquered let 17:04
us follow 17:07
him the morovian church 17:09
everybody okay so that was a christingle 17:12
let's do it again I'm going to read some 17:16
information and I want you to type the 17:18
key 17:21
wordss read some information and I will 17:22
type the 17:25
keywords 17:27
the nativity scene is a vivid tbla 17:49
depicting the birth of Jesus Christ 17:52
originating from St Francis of aisi in 17:55
1223 this tradition brings the story of 18:01
Christmas to life crafted with care each 18:04
figure from Mary to Joseph to the three 18:08
wise men plays a crucial role in this 18:12
Divine narrative creating a nativity 18:16
scene is a tactile way to connect with 18:19
the story of Christmas offering a moment 18:22
of contemplation about the humble 18:25
beginnings of Jesus it is a poignant 18:28
reminder of the Miracle of Life and the 18:32
universal message of hope and 18:35
love 18:47
poignant poignant exactly 18:49
poignant I like that word 18:53
poignant 18:57
and Manuel says LOL three wise men who 19:02
are they 19:05
yo Manuel is a bit of a 19:07
Zuma he doesn't believe in old 19:10
traditions he prefers the new ones like 19:12
Santa 19:15
Claus actually I think it's the opposite 19:17
yeah all right so I'll give you the text 19:25
next here there were some complaints 19:28
about the 19:30
size so let's see if I can give you a 19:31
bigger one 19:36
bigger how is that that's about that's 19:57
as big as I can do really without 19:59
problems I could do that there you 20:02
go I don't understand anything from this 20:07
video says 20:11
Melle uh mashel can you read the text 20:13
there are some difficult words like 20:17
Vivid 20:20
table and bring the store to 20:24
life crafted with 20:30
care there's lots of difficult words a 20:33
cruci play a crucial 20:36
role Divine 20:40
narrative attack D 20:42
way the story of 20:45
Christmas a moment of 20:48
contemplation the humble 20:51
beginnings a poignant 20:54
reminder the Miracle of 20:56
Life and the universal message of hope 20:59
and love lots of excellent phrases 21:03
there okay everybody let's move 21:15
on I'm going to read the next one you 21:18
can type your keywords in the 21:21
chat 21:27
okay number 21:34
three lighting Advent candles is a 21:39
practice steeped in symbolism and 21:43
anticipation the tradition originating 21:48
in Germany in the 19th century marks the 21:52
countdown to Christmas 21:56
each candle lit on the four Sundays 21:59
leading up to Christmas represents 22:02
themes of Hope peace love and joy core 22:05
tenants of the Christian 22:11
faith this ritual is a reflective 22:15
Journey Illuminating the path to 22:19
Christmas 22:22
day as each candle flickers it's a 22:23
reminder 22:27
of the light that Christ brings into the 22:28
world guiding us through the 22:32
darkness towards a future filled with 22:35
hope and 22:39
Grace We Wish You a Merry 22:51
Christmas 22:56
[Music] 22:59
so in the chat we have Rich ritual 23:26
Illuminating the 23:28
path 23:31
reminder with hope and Grace Hope and 23:35
Grace yes Hope and Grace g r a c Grace 23:39
Hope and Grace what is 23:45
Grace what is Grace can anyone tell me 23:48
without using Google what is 23:51
Grace 23:56
what is 24:00
Grace what is 24:11
Grace 24:26
Irene says Grace is a kind of 24:32
forgiveness I think there's part of 24:34
forgiveness 24:36
yeah Grace is a gift from Jesus yes 24:37
that's 24:41
right gra Grace is a gift from 24:44
God which Christians 24:50
believe we earn because of Jesus's 24:53
sacrifice ice and when we ask for grace 24:57
in the name of Jesus then we receive 25:01
it so Grace is the love and favor of 25:06
God it is the presence of God and God's 25:12
love within 25:16
you uh yes forgiveness is a part of it 25:18
but I suppose there's many parts it's a 25:22
complex thing 25:25
and I am no expert in 25:28
theology I am no expert in 25:33
theology but my understanding is Grace 25:40
is like God's 25:43
love so you can see the text on the 25:50
screen 25:56
and I think we'll do one more of these 26:09
so you have the choice you have a choice 26:11
here uh your choices 26:15
are midnight 26:21
mass or Christmas carols 26:23
let's have a vote midnight mass or 26:28
Christmas carols you know what I'll do a 26:30
proper vote hang 26:32
on okay there's a poll now in the 26:44
chat what do you want to hear about 26:48
midnight mass or 26:50
Christmas 26:52
carols I receive God's grace when I lose 26:54
hope 26:57
that is one of the times when people 26:59
receive God's 27:02
grace at least it's one of the times 27:03
when people seek God's grace I 27:06
think all right you've got 20 seconds to 27:14
vote 20 19 18 the vote is in the 27:16
chat 27:26
yeah I think it has actually Manuel and 27:42
there's a few reasons for that it's 27:46
quite interesting you can see in the 27:48
picture that there's not that many 27:49
people at midnight mass but there's 27:52
quite a few reasons why midnight mass 27:54
doesn't bring people in anymore and 27:56
apparently one is 27:59
that if you have a midnight mass service 28:01
then you get lots of drunk people who 28:04
come out the pub and go to midnight mass 28:07
and it's quite difficult for the church 28:11
to 28:13
manage so a lot of churches don't do 28:14
midnight mass 28:17
anymore right so Christmas carols it is 28:24
okay let's hear about Christmas carols 28:27
so once again listen and type the 28:28
keywords carols are The Melodies of 28:33
Christmas echoing Through the Ages the 28:36
tradition of singing Christmas carols 28:39
dates back to the Middle Ages evolving 28:42
from Pagan songs sung during winter 28:45
solstice 28:49
celebrations these joyful hymns gained 28:51
Christian significance telling the story 28:54
story of Jesus's birth spreading cheer 28:57
and the message of Christmas singing 29:00
carols is more than spreading festive 29:03
Joy it's a way to connect with our past 29:06
to participate in a practice that has 29:09
brought people together for 29:11
Generations perhaps one of the reasons 29:16
why Christmas carols were adopted by 29:19
Christians so much is that seeing 29:23
in is mentioned as an act of worship and 29:27
an act of celebrating God several times 29:32
in the 29:36
Bible Christians like 29:38
singing and the Bible talks about 29:41
it 29:56
so there we are there's your Christmas 30:11
carols and there is the script on the 30:14
screen right 30:16
now does anyone have any questions about 30:21
the vocabulary that we've seen today 30:24
lots of really interesting vocabulary 30:28
there 30:56
Pagan uh Pagan 30:58
means pre 31:01
Christian or even 31:03
pre pre prej judeo 31:06
monotheism uh so prej judeo 31:11
polytheistic 31:16
religions that's 31:19
Pagan so 31:25
Pagan religions would be uh Nordic 31:29
gods uh the Roman 31:34
Pantheon is Pantheon the right 31:38
word the Roman Pantheon 31:42
right no it's not Pantheon is it what do 31:45
you call it the Roman 31:47
panon what you call like the collection 31:54
of Gods 31:56
maybe it is 32:01
Pantheon yes it is it's Pantheon the 32:11
Roman Pantheon Greek 32:14
pantheon uh 32:16
Hinduism Hindu Hinduism 32:19
is basically Pagan so Pagan is um 32:22
everything every 32:27
polytheistic 32:29
religion really uh in this context Pagan 32:32
means the ancient 32:36
English so the the the Kelts and uh 32:38
Anglo-Saxons pre- Christianity uh before 32:42
um 32:46
conversion they were Pagan and and the 32:48
Danish the Danes the 32:50
Vikings 32:56
but of 33:04
course it makes sense for Christians 33:05
to adopt Christmas carols because 33:09
Christians love 33:12
singing this is this is for all of you 33:16
non-christians out there who haven't 33:19
been to church Christians love 33:21
singing If you go to church you will 33:25
see yeah Christians love 33:30
singing 33:32
right so that was our little dive into 33:34
Christian 33:37
Christmas and you can download the notes 33:40
for today just put those in the 33:42
chat and I think it is is appropriate to 33:55
say that this is the countdown to the 33:57
end not to the end of the year but to 34:01
the end of classes of live classes on 34:04
Oxford online 34:08
English we are 34:11
ending live 34:13
classes um so I have one more that's the 34:18
that's the final one on the 34:22
30th that's the final one and if you 34:25
want to see more of me you can go to my 34:29
channel my personal 34:32
Channel where I will 34:34
continue but on Oxford online English 34:37
the classes will 34:40
stop why is Oxford online stopping 34:46
that's a good question 34:50
Patu um I think that's for olle to 34:51
answer really but 34:54
basically I suppose O's 35:00
plan for streaming didn't go as he 35:03
expected so he was hoping for a bit more 35:08
from streaming and I think YouTube 35:12
doesn't promote streaming as much 35:14
as other videos perhaps so 35:19
hey so we got one more and if you want 35:24
to 35:27
continue learning with me then you can 35:28
youtube.com/ Professor 35:33
rich I stream twice a 35:35
week uh do you want to review your first 35:39
OE stream I would like to do that 35:41
actually that'd be 35:43
interesting yeah it'd be interesting to 35:45
compare wouldn't it maybe I should do 35:47
that next week that could be fun that's 35:50
a really good idea 35:52
actually really good 35:55
idea all right 35:59
so question time 36:04
folks uh got a little bit of time for 36:08
questions and then I will be 36:10
continuing on my own channel so please 36:13
do join me 36:17
there get the dumb headphones off that 36:24
kind of helps a bit doesn't 36:27
[Music] 36:30
it 36:55
[Music] 36:58
in 37:25
so it's definitely wrong 37:27
[Music] 37:29
here maybe that was 37:46
[Music] 37:49
it 37:55
[Music] 37:59
are you ready folks um I think actually 38:05
it might be better if I just sing 38:08
without playing 38:09
[Music] 38:12
guitar I need a accompany I need 38:21
accompaniment 38:25
one two one 38:28
two hang 38:31
on hug hug the herald is that right hug 38:34
the Herald Angels Sing glory to the 38:38
newborn king peace on Earth and mercy my 38:43
old God and sin is reconcile joyful all 38:47
ye nations rise join the Triumph of the 38:52
Skies with Angelic host Proclaim Christ 38:56
is born in Bethlehem H the heral Angels 39:01
Sing glory to the newborn 39:05
king I don't know if I did the tune 39:10
right I can't remember but that's 39:13
probably all you're going to 39:15
get so you enjoy that there you go 39:17
Christmas Carol for you folks so there 39:20
is a tradition of singing in 39:23
Christianity and something that's 39:25
returned a little bit is singing carols 39:28
on the street and people still do that 39:32
so and and it's actually it's becoming 39:36
more popular now that churches are 39:38
getting together and they will go on the 39:40
street at about 6:00 p.m. so it's dark 39:42
and they go around the neighborhood and 39:46
and sing the songs under a lamp post and 39:48
it's they normally sing about four songs 39:51
and then move on and it's very very nice 39:53
and um actually I joined one this year I 39:56
did one uh joined the the Christmas 39:59
carol Service uh no it's called the 40:03
Christmas carol walk actually I joined 40:06
one and we we we sung the songs and it 40:09
was um it was good fun and we also went 40:10
to a care home so a care home you know a 40:13
home where normally old people require 40:19
some sort of care and attention and we 40:22
went there and sung for for them and 40:25
that was nice as 40:26
well we didn't get much response from 40:28
them I guess in a care home people 40:32
normally have lots of 40:35
medication so there wasn't a great deal 40:37
of wasn't a great deal of response going 40:40
on but it was it was nice to do it's the 40:45
first time I've ever done it in my life 40:48
and I think I will do it again actually 40:50
because I really I enjoyed it more than 40:53
I expect I thought it was like an 40:55
obligation oh I'll do it okay and then 40:57
when I did it I was like oh this was 40:59
good I want to do that 41:02
again so um so that was kind of fun 41:05
actually and uh yeah I probably will do 41:08
that again that that I think is what 41:11
carols are all about so do we have any 41:13
questions 41:16
folks 41:25
if not then I'm going to take a little 41:35
break and I will resume on youtube.com/ 41:38
Professor 41:42
reach and join me next week for the 41:44
final stream the last 41:46
one and hey uh I I look forward to it 41:49
I'm I'm I think actually next week I'm 41:54
probably not going to organize a lesson 41:57
but I'm just going to come on stream and 42:01
just talk about teaching English 42:04
teaching online working with olle and 42:08
Oxford online 42:11
English doing the 42:13
streams and a bit about the future as 42:16
well so we won't have much in the way of 42:22
M material next week it's more of a hey 42:25
this is the end of that it's been fun 42:29
and let's see where we go from here that 42:33
kind of 42:37
thing so Santos says can you tell us how 42:42
to connect with native speakers what I 42:45
would say Santos 42:48
is find a genuine reason to connect with 42:51
people that is is not about learning 42:55
English so for example are you 42:59
religious if you are then you could 43:03
connect with a an English-speaking 43:06
religious community so if you're a Hindu 43:08
then you can find English-speaking 43:11
Hindus if you are Buddhist you can find 43:13
English-speaking Buddhist 43:17
communities that's a good way to do it 43:19
if you're not 43:22
religious then think about special 43:23
interests like online cooking 43:26
groups public speaking groups like 43:32
there's lots of free groups 43:35
online uh like one if any of you out 43:38
there have problems with drugs or 43:41
alcohol there are several 43:44
groups which help people with 43:48
addiction and they often have support 43:52
groups well almost always the support 43:54
groups are in English and they're online 43:57
you can join them for free so if you 44:00
have that kind of issue and you want 44:03
to be free from that then joining one of 44:07
those groups would be absolutely 44:11
fantastic uh I'll see if I can find the 44:16
one that I 44:19
recommend I know there's everyone knows 44:23
Alcoholics Anonymous but 44:26
there's there's another one that's kind 44:28
of famous now that's that people really 44:30
like just give me one moment here and 44:35
I'll post post about it in the 44:37
chat 44:54
smart recovery they're the 45:02
ones 45:04
yeah so the these guys have got loads of 45:06
like free online 45:10
meetings so if that's your 45:11
thing if you want to 45:17
quit an 45:21
addiction uh there's lots 45:23
of 45:26
English-speaking meetings on that 45:28
website um so it's a great way to 45:31
connect with English speakers and 45:34
improve your 45:37
English all right everybody Merry 45:44
Christmas and I will see you in 10 45:46
minutes on my channel thank you very 45:49
much for joining me today smash that 45:51
like button go to YouTube go to 45:53
www. oxfordonlineenglish.com 45:57
and I'll see you next week for the last 45:59
ever live stream all right catch you 46:02
later folks I'll see you in 10 minutes 46:05
Merry 46:09
Christmas have a very Merry Christmas 46:10
yes I should say that have a wonderful 46:13
very very Merry Christmas and I'll see 46:15
you in 10 46:18
minutes 46:20
sense okay I'm having oh God yes should 46:21
have ended the stream now I'm having a 46:26
coughing 46:28

[English]
hello
everybody good morning good afternoon
good evening my name is teacher Rich for
Oxford online English and today we are
talking about the Christian in
Christmas often you get lessons around
about this time of year which focus on
Christmas around the world or the Pagan
traditions of Christmas or stuff like
that my camera is really not that good
today is
it and I decided you know let's go back
to root Source kind of and talk about
Christian
Christmas so what are the Christian
elements of
Christmas I think last year I did the
Pagan and the old English elements of
Christmas there's plent plenty of those
like that stuff and that there they are
from Pagan Traditions but let's talk
about the the Christian Traditions the
Christian in
Christmas so hello to everybody in the
chat today and let me show you a
picture so have a look at these two
pictures which of these is your idea of
Christmas so which of these is more your
idea of
Christmas we have two different
Christmases there and we're going to say
they're both let's say fairly modern
day a picture on the left and the
picture on the right so which of those
is more your idea of Christmas and can
you tell me can you tell me in the
chat can you tell me in the chat what
can you see in the two pictures what can
you see in the two pictures

fantastic well you should
you should find this interesting then we
got old traditional and modern Christmas
decorations yeah there's a little bit of
a difference there in the decorations
mhm and L AA says I like your
jumper because I'm British so we call it
a jumper but you're right the Americans
call it a Jersey Lin
ABA the first pictures with family yeah
that's right so the picture on the left
we can see
family the picture on the left we can
see
family Ashley Chen says what I see in
picture one is all the family members
Gathering Together chatting and
praying H
yeah on the left side people are doing
their work work I don't know about doing
their work but in the other one they are
posing that's right so in the right
picture they are posing in the left
picture they are looking at the nativity
scene they are looking at the nativity
scene what's a nativity scene can you
see
that we have a nativity scene the first
picture looks more ancient style ancient
is not the correct word
here traditional
oldfashioned stuff like
that and no political messages in the
chat
please Christmas is to pray and
celebrate the
holiday
spiritual Manuel says nativity scene on
the table is a
joke tell us Manuel tell us about your
nativity scenes in
Spain the right pictures with friends
yes we have a Christmas tree in both
pictures the picture on the left has
some Christian photos Christian
Christian paintings on the wall the
picture on the right has modern art on
the
wall uh Muhammed Yahya says hello from
Mali so I'm going to show you some
phrases that relate to Christian
Christmas five
phrases here they
are look at those
phrases what do they
mean how do they relate to Christmas do
you know about these things we have
Midnight
Mass Christmas
carols a nativity
scene Advent candles
and a
christingle christingle
service so what indeed are these things
what indeed are these
things what are
they
number one is a congregation what what
is a congregation Julia what does that
mean praying just before Christmas
question mark says
corx Anna says number two is sing
Christmas songs like all I want for
Christmas is
you
I can't
imagine is is is all I want for
Christmas is you actually A Christmas
Carol I'm not sure if that's a Christmas
carol Christmas carols do not have to be
religious but I think all I want for
Christmas is
you I want to say that's not a Christmas
carol you can have we wish you a Merry
Christmas that is a Christmas
Carol We Wish You a Merry
Christmas should we have live live Rich
learns to play We Wish You a Merry
Christmas on
stream on
guitar is my guitar in
tune
no is
it sounds a bit out hang
on just the bottom
string the higher
strings maybe maybe we'll have a bonus
might sing We Wish You a Merry Christmas
live on stream I should practice for
that but hey it's the second to last
ever stream on Oxford online English
second to last I think Carrie has
finished she's done she did a last
stream this is the second to last from
me and my final stream will be next
week I don't know anything about
Christmas because I'm Muslim interesting
please sing says Patu okay we'll see
what's the purpose okay so let me show
you some pictures to help with
this so take a look at the
pictures picture 1 2 3 4
5 can you tell me what are the names of
these pictures what can we see in the
pictures number one is midnight
mass what do you think about the
others what else can you see in the
pictures what can you see in the other
pictures it's kind of difficult
[Music]
to
[Music]
[Music]
okay more or less is
it um number one midnight mass number
two Christmas carols that's
[Music]
right
I just don't think it's a good idea
without having it tuned and without
[Music]
practicing number three Advent candles
no number three is not Advent
candles Ah that's better
sorry
Santos of course if you're annoyed then
it will be
memorable yes number five add event
candles so one midnight mass two
Christmas carols
three no one has
three no one has three anyone have three
number three no so number three is a
christingle and we'll talk about that
Chris dingles have become more popular
over the
years the last 100 years or so Chris
singles have become more
popular number five is a nativity scene
and number six is advent
candles okay so I'm going to I'm going
to tell
you I'm going to tell you some things
about
these I want you to
listen and type the
keywords listen and type keywords so get
ready in chat listen and type
keywords if you're ready type ready and
press
enter if you're ready type ready in the
chats let's go ready go go go how quick
ready Santos he's on it oh look at this
okay we've got
it Casia Lima there's always
one could you please spell number three
I typed it in the chat it's c h r i s t
i n g l e
christingle okay listen and type the
keywords that you
hear
the Chris Dingle service a relatively
recent tradition begun by the morovian
church in the 18th century is a unique
and symbolic celebration the word
christingle means Christ Light and
represents Jesus as the light of the
world the service involves creating a
christingle an orange representing the
world a red ribbon symbolizing the blood
of Christ fruits and sweets on sticks
signifying God's creations and a lit
candle at the center of the orange
embodying Jesus's light participating in
this service is a profound experience a
tactile reminder of God's love for the
world and the hope that Jesus's birth
brings to
humanity
let's see what you've got in the chat
then so the morovian church Santos how
did you hear that and how did you spell
it
correctly how did you do that are you
using like caption
software recent tradition very good well
done Sonia unique and symbolic that's a
good one the symbolic celebration the
light of the world a lit candle the
blood of
Christ M very
good orange represents God and
creation a lit Candle on the body
profound experience very good and I'll
just show you the script here so there's
the script for you if you wish if you
wish to see that it's right
there and that will be in the notes for
today so that's the
christingle quite a recent tradition
actually the christingle started by the
morovian
church I have no idea what the morovian
church is what is the morovian church
does anyone know the morovian
church uh is one of the oldest
Protestant
denominations dating back to the
Bohemian Reformation of the 15th
century 60 years before Lutheran
Reformation
wow that is an old
Reformation our lamb has conquered let
us follow
him the morovian church
everybody okay so that was a christingle
let's do it again I'm going to read some
information and I want you to type the
key
wordss read some information and I will
type the
keywords
the nativity scene is a vivid tbla
depicting the birth of Jesus Christ
originating from St Francis of aisi in
1223 this tradition brings the story of
Christmas to life crafted with care each
figure from Mary to Joseph to the three
wise men plays a crucial role in this
Divine narrative creating a nativity
scene is a tactile way to connect with
the story of Christmas offering a moment
of contemplation about the humble
beginnings of Jesus it is a poignant
reminder of the Miracle of Life and the
universal message of hope and
love
poignant poignant exactly
poignant I like that word
poignant
and Manuel says LOL three wise men who
are they
yo Manuel is a bit of a
Zuma he doesn't believe in old
traditions he prefers the new ones like
Santa
Claus actually I think it's the opposite
yeah all right so I'll give you the text
next here there were some complaints
about the
size so let's see if I can give you a
bigger one
bigger how is that that's about that's
as big as I can do really without
problems I could do that there you
go I don't understand anything from this
video says
Melle uh mashel can you read the text
there are some difficult words like
Vivid
table and bring the store to
life crafted with
care there's lots of difficult words a
cruci play a crucial
role Divine
narrative attack D
way the story of
Christmas a moment of
contemplation the humble
beginnings a poignant
reminder the Miracle of
Life and the universal message of hope
and love lots of excellent phrases
there okay everybody let's move
on I'm going to read the next one you
can type your keywords in the
chat
okay number
three lighting Advent candles is a
practice steeped in symbolism and
anticipation the tradition originating
in Germany in the 19th century marks the
countdown to Christmas
each candle lit on the four Sundays
leading up to Christmas represents
themes of Hope peace love and joy core
tenants of the Christian
faith this ritual is a reflective
Journey Illuminating the path to
Christmas
day as each candle flickers it's a
reminder
of the light that Christ brings into the
world guiding us through the
darkness towards a future filled with
hope and
Grace We Wish You a Merry
Christmas
[Music]
so in the chat we have Rich ritual
Illuminating the
path
reminder with hope and Grace Hope and
Grace yes Hope and Grace g r a c Grace
Hope and Grace what is
Grace what is Grace can anyone tell me
without using Google what is
Grace
what is
Grace what is
Grace
Irene says Grace is a kind of
forgiveness I think there's part of
forgiveness
yeah Grace is a gift from Jesus yes
that's
right gra Grace is a gift from
God which Christians
believe we earn because of Jesus's
sacrifice ice and when we ask for grace
in the name of Jesus then we receive
it so Grace is the love and favor of
God it is the presence of God and God's
love within
you uh yes forgiveness is a part of it
but I suppose there's many parts it's a
complex thing
and I am no expert in
theology I am no expert in
theology but my understanding is Grace
is like God's
love so you can see the text on the
screen
and I think we'll do one more of these
so you have the choice you have a choice
here uh your choices
are midnight
mass or Christmas carols
let's have a vote midnight mass or
Christmas carols you know what I'll do a
proper vote hang
on okay there's a poll now in the
chat what do you want to hear about
midnight mass or
Christmas
carols I receive God's grace when I lose
hope
that is one of the times when people
receive God's
grace at least it's one of the times
when people seek God's grace I
think all right you've got 20 seconds to
vote 20 19 18 the vote is in the
chat
yeah I think it has actually Manuel and
there's a few reasons for that it's
quite interesting you can see in the
picture that there's not that many
people at midnight mass but there's
quite a few reasons why midnight mass
doesn't bring people in anymore and
apparently one is
that if you have a midnight mass service
then you get lots of drunk people who
come out the pub and go to midnight mass
and it's quite difficult for the church
to
manage so a lot of churches don't do
midnight mass
anymore right so Christmas carols it is
okay let's hear about Christmas carols
so once again listen and type the
keywords carols are The Melodies of
Christmas echoing Through the Ages the
tradition of singing Christmas carols
dates back to the Middle Ages evolving
from Pagan songs sung during winter
solstice
celebrations these joyful hymns gained
Christian significance telling the story
story of Jesus's birth spreading cheer
and the message of Christmas singing
carols is more than spreading festive
Joy it's a way to connect with our past
to participate in a practice that has
brought people together for
Generations perhaps one of the reasons
why Christmas carols were adopted by
Christians so much is that seeing
in is mentioned as an act of worship and
an act of celebrating God several times
in the
Bible Christians like
singing and the Bible talks about
it
so there we are there's your Christmas
carols and there is the script on the
screen right
now does anyone have any questions about
the vocabulary that we've seen today
lots of really interesting vocabulary
there
Pagan uh Pagan
means pre
Christian or even
pre pre prej judeo
monotheism uh so prej judeo
polytheistic
religions that's
Pagan so
Pagan religions would be uh Nordic
gods uh the Roman
Pantheon is Pantheon the right
word the Roman Pantheon
right no it's not Pantheon is it what do
you call it the Roman
panon what you call like the collection
of Gods
maybe it is
Pantheon yes it is it's Pantheon the
Roman Pantheon Greek
pantheon uh
Hinduism Hindu Hinduism
is basically Pagan so Pagan is um
everything every
polytheistic
religion really uh in this context Pagan
means the ancient
English so the the the Kelts and uh
Anglo-Saxons pre- Christianity uh before
um
conversion they were Pagan and and the
Danish the Danes the
Vikings
but of
course it makes sense for Christians
to adopt Christmas carols because
Christians love
singing this is this is for all of you
non-christians out there who haven't
been to church Christians love
singing If you go to church you will
see yeah Christians love
singing
right so that was our little dive into
Christian
Christmas and you can download the notes
for today just put those in the
chat and I think it is is appropriate to
say that this is the countdown to the
end not to the end of the year but to
the end of classes of live classes on
Oxford online
English we are
ending live
classes um so I have one more that's the
that's the final one on the
30th that's the final one and if you
want to see more of me you can go to my
channel my personal
Channel where I will
continue but on Oxford online English
the classes will
stop why is Oxford online stopping
that's a good question
Patu um I think that's for olle to
answer really but
basically I suppose O's
plan for streaming didn't go as he
expected so he was hoping for a bit more
from streaming and I think YouTube
doesn't promote streaming as much
as other videos perhaps so
hey so we got one more and if you want
to
continue learning with me then you can
youtube.com/ Professor
rich I stream twice a
week uh do you want to review your first
OE stream I would like to do that
actually that'd be
interesting yeah it'd be interesting to
compare wouldn't it maybe I should do
that next week that could be fun that's
a really good idea
actually really good
idea all right
so question time
folks uh got a little bit of time for
questions and then I will be
continuing on my own channel so please
do join me
there get the dumb headphones off that
kind of helps a bit doesn't
[Music]
it
[Music]
in
so it's definitely wrong
[Music]
here maybe that was
[Music]
it
[Music]
are you ready folks um I think actually
it might be better if I just sing
without playing
[Music]
guitar I need a accompany I need
accompaniment
one two one
two hang
on hug hug the herald is that right hug
the Herald Angels Sing glory to the
newborn king peace on Earth and mercy my
old God and sin is reconcile joyful all
ye nations rise join the Triumph of the
Skies with Angelic host Proclaim Christ
is born in Bethlehem H the heral Angels
Sing glory to the newborn
king I don't know if I did the tune
right I can't remember but that's
probably all you're going to
get so you enjoy that there you go
Christmas Carol for you folks so there
is a tradition of singing in
Christianity and something that's
returned a little bit is singing carols
on the street and people still do that
so and and it's actually it's becoming
more popular now that churches are
getting together and they will go on the
street at about 6:00 p.m. so it's dark
and they go around the neighborhood and
and sing the songs under a lamp post and
it's they normally sing about four songs
and then move on and it's very very nice
and um actually I joined one this year I
did one uh joined the the Christmas
carol Service uh no it's called the
Christmas carol walk actually I joined
one and we we we sung the songs and it
was um it was good fun and we also went
to a care home so a care home you know a
home where normally old people require
some sort of care and attention and we
went there and sung for for them and
that was nice as
well we didn't get much response from
them I guess in a care home people
normally have lots of
medication so there wasn't a great deal
of wasn't a great deal of response going
on but it was it was nice to do it's the
first time I've ever done it in my life
and I think I will do it again actually
because I really I enjoyed it more than
I expect I thought it was like an
obligation oh I'll do it okay and then
when I did it I was like oh this was
good I want to do that
again so um so that was kind of fun
actually and uh yeah I probably will do
that again that that I think is what
carols are all about so do we have any
questions
folks
if not then I'm going to take a little
break and I will resume on youtube.com/
Professor
reach and join me next week for the
final stream the last
one and hey uh I I look forward to it
I'm I'm I think actually next week I'm
