A woman kneads white flour dough diligently.

She crafts a chewy dough.

Cutting it into bite-sized pieces,

she flattens them with a wooden rolling pin.

She fills them with various ingredients to suit her taste.

After shaping them beautifully,

a little warm waiting time is needed.

"Bao."

On an ordinary day,

she takes a bite of the carefully made dumpling

with a blank expression...

The woman's eyes grow as large as the dumpling.

Wondering if she's seeing things, she looks again,

and indeed, the dumpling is alive and moving.

But that wasn’t the end of it.

The woman decides to cherish the cute life that has entered her life

as a gift.

From then on, her life changes completely.

Taking responsibility for a small life that’s unpredictable

is no easy task.

It wasn’t easy at all.

But the joy was so great,

that the precious daily life with the dumpling

made all the hardships fade away.

Fed by the woman's love,

the dumpling grows rapidly.

Not only its body but also its heart seems to have grown,

and it begins to act differently.

Fearing the dumpling might get hurt,

the woman tries to protect it in her arms,

but the more she does, the more rebellious the dumpling becomes.

It even refuses to share bread with her, something they once enjoyed together.

Thus begins the dumpling's full-blown rebellion.

Hoping it will smile at her like before,

she prepares delicious food made with love,

but...

her efforts seem in vain.

It seems the dumpling now has many important things

besides her.

As she struggles to comfort her hollow heart,

her life takes another turn...

Not only does the dumpling bring a foreign-looking woman home,

but now it wants to leave her

and follow the woman.

In its smile,

The dumpling tries to leave her coldly,

but she refuses to let it go,

absolutely not.

A struggle ensues,

and as emotions flare, she cries.

Eventually...

she eats the dumpling.

Unable to accept the reality,

she weeps endlessly.

Someone approaches her...

Is this... the dumpling?

No, it’s her only son,

whom she called "dumpling" because of his round, cute face.

He cautiously reaches out to apologize.

They say no parent can win against their child.

Touched by his awkward attempt,

her heart melts.

Together, they lean on each other,

sharing the bread they loved in their younger days.

Much has changed,

yet nothing has truly changed.

They realize this.

At the 91st Academy Awards,

Pixar's short animation 'Bao'

won the Best Animated Short Film award.

Director Domee Shi later released

another work titled 'Turning Red.'

The central theme of this work is

the 'Empty Nest Syndrome,'

referring to the sense of loss and sadness parents feel

when their children become independent.

The film vividly captures the emotions of the mother,

who was the primary caregiver.

From the days of cherishing a smiling child,

fearing they might get hurt,

to the time when they grow a little older,

In their teenage years, friends become their whole world,

and they start spending more time outside.

Eventually,

they leave their parents' nest

to start a new life with someone new.

Though it’s natural,

letting go of a child

turns her back on the dumpling,

but the key to resolving all problems lies in

understanding each other's perspectives

through various forms of communication.

There’s a saying that children are like guests

who stay with their parents for a while before leaving.

While it’s impossible to define the greatness of maternal or paternal love,

instead of giving them fish,

teaching them how to fish

so they can become self-sufficient

and then setting them free,

하얀 밀가루 반죽을 열심히 치대며

쫄깃한 반죽을 만드는 한 여인

먹기 좋은 크기로 잘라

나무 밀대로 슥슥 평평하게 밀고

취향에 맞는 각종 재료들을 담아

예쁘게 모양을 잡아준 후엔,

따뜻한 기다림의 시간이 조금 필요합니다

"바오"

여느 날과 다름없던 어느 날,

정성껏 빚은 만두를

무채색의 표정으로 한입 베어 무는데...

왕만두만큼이나 커다래진 여인의 눈

헛것을 본 건가.. 싶어, 다시 한번 봐도

분명 살아 움직이는 만두

거기서 끝이 아니었죠

여인의 삶에 찾아든 귀여운 생명을

선물이라 여기기로 합니다

그 후로 180도 달라진 여인의 삶

어디로 튈지 모르는 작은 생명을

책임지는 일은,

여간 어려운 게 아니었죠

하지만 그 기쁨이 너무 컸기에,

만두와 함께 하는 소중한 일상은

모든 힘듦을 싹 가시게 만들어 주곤 했습니다

그렇게 여인의 사랑을 먹고

무럭무럭 자라난 만두

그 몸뿐 아니라 마음도 훌쩍 자랐는지,

어느새 이전과는 다른 행동을 하기 시작했고

여인은 혹시 만두가 다치지는 않을까 하는 마음에,

그를 자신의 품 안에서 보호하려고 했지만

그럴수록 만두는 삐딱선을 타곤 했죠

여인과 즐겨 나눠먹던 빵도 거부할 정도로 말이에요

그 후 시작된 본격적인 만두의 반항기

사랑이 담긴 맛있는 음식을

잔뜩 만들어주면,

이전처럼 여인에게 활짝 웃어줄까 싶어

솜씨를 발휘해 보지만...

이미 만두에겐 그녀 말고도

중요한 것들이 많이 생겨난듯합니다

헛헛한 마음을 애써 달래기가 무섭게

그녀의 삶은 또 한 번의 전환을 맞이하게 되는데...

이국적인 모습의 낯선 여자를

집으로 데려온 것도 모자라

이제는 아예 그녀를 따라서

여인의 품을 떠나겠다는 만두

그 입가에는

여인에게만 보여줬던 미소를

흠뻑 머금고 있었습니다

여인을 냉정히 뿌리치고 가려는 만두

하지만 여인은 자신의 품을 떠나는 것만큼은

절대로 안 된다는 듯

만두와 실랑이를 벌이기 시작했고

감정이 격해져 눈물을 흘리던 그녀는

결국...

만두를... 먹어버렸습니다

받아들일 수 없는 현실에

하염없이 눈물만 흘리던 여인

그녀에게 누군가 다가오는데...

이건... 만두?

아니, 동그란 얼굴이 귀여워 만두라 불렀던

하나뿐인 여인의 아들입니다

엄마에게 조심스럽게 내민 사과의 손길

자식 이기는 부모 없다고 했죠

그 서툰 마음이 기특하고 가여워

스르르 녹아내린 엄마의 마음

그렇게 두 모자는, 서로에게 기대

어릴 적 즐겨먹던 빵을 나눠먹으며

많은 게 변했지만,

사실은 아무것도 변한 건 없다는 걸

깨닫게 됩니다

제91회 아카데미상에서

감독 '도미 시'는 이후에

'메이의 새빨간 비밀'이라는 작품을 선보였습니다

이 작품의 가장 큰 주제는 바로

'빈 둥지 증후군'

자녀들이 독립하는 시기에

부모가 느끼는 상실감과 슬픔을 말하는데,

이 작품에선, 주 양육자의 역할을 맡았던

엄마의 감정을 생생하게 담았습니다

나를 보고 방긋 웃어주는 귀여운 아이가

행여 다치지는 않을지

금지옥엽 기르던 시절을 지나

조금 머리가 컸다고,

자기주장이 조금씩 세지기 시작하더니

친구들이 인생의 전부인 마냥

밖으로 도는 청소년기

그리고 종국에는,

새로운 사람과 새로운 삶을 시작하려

부모의 품을 떠나는 독립 시기까지..

자연스러운 일이긴 하지만,

품 안에 자식을 놓아주는 게

아무렇지 않을 수가 없겠죠

작품 속 여인도 그런 깊은 상실감에

만두에게 등을 돌려버리지만,

언제나 모든 문제를 해결하는 건

서로의 입장을 헤아려보는,

'이해'로 가는 다양한 방식의 소통입니다

아이는 부모 곁에 잠시 머물다 떠나는

손님이라는 말이 있죠

모성애나 부성애 같은

그 위대한 감정을 감히 정의할 수는 없겠지만,

물고기를 잡아주는 게 아닌,

물고기 잡는 법을 가르쳐 주듯

스스로 한 사람의 몫을 다 할 수 있게 된다면,

자유롭게 놓아 준 뒤,

고생한 자신에게

스스로의 삶을 가꿀 수 있는 기회를

양껏 주는 게 좋겠다는 생각을 하게 되네요

서로의 오해를 풀고 이해하며 사랑하기엔

대화만 한 게 없지만,

조금 부끄럽다면..

부모님과, 혹은 자녀와

이 영상을 같이 보시는 것도

참 좋을 것 같습니다
