hi everyone welcome back to the English
dialogue podcast I'm
Mike and I'm Emma today's topic is one
that I think a lot of people can relate
to burnout that's right have you ever
felt completely drained unmotivated and
wondered if you were just lazy well it
might not be
laziness you could actually be
experiencing burnout yes there's a big
difference between being lazy and being
burnt out and understanding this
difference is key to addressing it in
this episode we're going to discuss six
signs that indicate you're burnt out not
lazy and how to recognize them let's get
started the first sign of burnout is
constant exhaustion
yeah and I don't mean just feeling tired
after a long day it's a kind of deep
persistent fatigue that doesn't go away
even after you rest exactly it's the
feeling of waking up tired even after a
full night sleep it's like your body and
mind are telling you they need a break
when you're burnt out this exhaustion is
more about mental and emotional fatigue
Than Physical tiredness you feel drained
and can't seem to reach charge no matter
how much you try to rest and it's
important to recognize this as a sign of
burnout rather than laziness because
laziness doesn't cause this kind of deep
fatigue the second sign is a lack of
motivation when you're burnt out it
feels almost impossible to get started
on tasks even ones you used to
enjoy yes this is different from
procrastination it's not about putting
things off because you don't want to do
them
it's more about feeling mentally blocked
and unable to find the energy to start
I've been there you want to be
productive but it feels like a
heavyweight is holding you back exactly
and this can be confusing because it
feels like you're being lazy but in
reality your mind is just overwhelmed
and needs a break the best way to handle
this is to give yourself permission to
rest and recharge rather than pushing
through and making the burnout worse the
third sign is decreased performance when
you're burnt out it's hard to focus and
you might notice that the quality of
your work is
slipping yes tasks that were once easy
become challenging and you start making
mistakes you wouldn't usually make it's
not because you've suddenly lost your
skills or abilities it's because your
brain is overloaded and needs time to
recover and this can be a blow to your
self-esteem
you might start thinking you're just not
good enough but in reality your mind is
just tired and needs a break so if
you're noticing a drop in your
performance don't be too hard on
yourself it's likely a sign that you
need to slow down and take care of your
mental health the fourth sign is feeling
cynical or negative when you're burnt
out it's common to feel disconnected and
start seeing everything in a negative
light yes you might notice yourself
becoming more irritable frustrated or
even resentful especially towards tasks
or people you used to enjoy it's like
you lose your sense of joy and start
questioning why you're even doing what
you're doing this negativity isn't a
sign of
laziness it's a sign that your mental
and emotional resources are depleted
you're mentally exhausted and it's
affecting your outlook on life
recognizing this negativity as a symptom
of burnout out can help you take steps
to address it rather than just blaming
yourself for feeling this way the fifth
sign is difficulty concentrating when
you're burnt out it's hard to stay
focused on even simple tasks your mind
feels scattered and you find yourself
getting easily
distracted it's like your brain just
can't process information the way it
usually does yes it's almost like your
brain is on overload and it can't take
in any more information
this can make it really hard to complete
tasks which might make you feel lazy but
in reality it's just another sign that
you're burnt out your brain is trying to
tell you it needs a break to reset so if
you're finding it hard to focus don't be
quick to judge yourself it's a clear
indication that your mind needs some
time to
recover the sixth and final sign we're
discussing today is emotional
numbness this is when you start feeling
detached from your emotions almost like
you're running on autopilot you might
feel like nothing really matters anymore
exactly it's like you've lost the
ability to feel Joy excitement or even
sadness you're just going through the
emotions without any real emotional
engagement this is a strong indicator of
burnout it's your mind's way of
protecting itself from stress by
shutting down
emotionally and it's important to
recognize this as a sign of burnout
rather than laziness because it shows
that you're mentally exhausted not
uninterested taking time to rest and
reconnect with your emotions can help
you start to feel more like yourself
again so now that we've identified these
six signs of burnout constant exhaustion
lack of motivation decreased performance
feeling cynical difficulty concentrating
and emotional numbness what can we do
about it the first step is to
acknowledge it recognizing that you're
burnt out is the most important step
toward
recovery then you need to take a break
this might mean taking time off work
setting boundaries or finding time each
day to rest and recharge and don't be
afraid to seek help talking to a friend
therapist or even a mentor can give you
the support you need to start recovering
absolutely remember burnout is a sign
that you've been working too hard for
too long it's not about being lazy it's
your mind and body asking for rest and
the sooner you recognize it the sooner
you can start taking steps to feel
better so if you're feeling overwhelmed
and struggling with these signs give
yourself a break you're not lazy you're
just burnt
