Now, let's go to the material for
topic number 1 in today's livestream.
Topic 85 from the 10/10 Strategy Workbook.
This is an excerpt from the poem "Thirst" by
female poet Xuan Quynh. Question number 1.
Determine the expressive methods used
in the poem above. For example, when I
read this question, I'll underline the key phrase
which is the expressive methods
right? Now that you've read the material,
what do you think? What are the
expressive methods used in the material
"Thirst" by female poet Xuan Quynh?
What are they? For example, one prominent method…
you can mention methods like the fact that
we have narration. The essence of narration is storytelling.
For example, you can see in the text there are
characters, events – that's telling a story,
right? Recounting the development of a
story in a certain sequence.
The events unfold in a certain sequence.
Then, what else do you see? You see expression,
which is also a very prominent expressive method.
As its name suggests, its essence is
expressing emotions.
If narration is typical of literary works
like stories, plays, novels,
then expression is an extremely
common expressive method in poetic material,
right? Because poetry is the voice of the writer.
If narration is typical of literary works
like stories, plays, novels, then expression
is a very common expressive method in poetry, right?
Because poetry is the voice of the author's soul.
You guys have studied literary texts "Morning Dew,"
so you probably remember this quote. I always say this
when mentioning poetry: poetry is the voice of the author's soul.
Poetry is a way to express inner thoughts,
emotions, feelings through language to convey
one's sentiments. Therefore, expression is
one of the most prominent methods in poetry,
and even the main expressive method for many
poems.
Let's take a look at what else we have. We have argumentation.
Argumentation is also a very important
expressive method. Because in understanding questions,
you'll also need argumentation skills. When you write
páragraphs and essays, they're all argumentative paragraphs and essays.
So, we can say that argumentation is a
key method, an important method that not only applies
to studying and preparing for literature exams
but also for your future growth. Because you'll face many situations
where you need to present a viewpoint and
persuade others – your listeners, your readers – to
agree with what you share so they believe
in the faith you've entrusted.
So, the essence of argumentation is that you present
a viewpoint, thoughts, opinions, evaluations about an issue.
Remember, it's not just about giving an opinion right away.
Some of you are bad at argumentation or don't even know the skill because
why? Because you only give a viewpoint, no
reasons, no evidence to support your belief.
How can your opinions persuade others?
Because you're missing a crucial element:
argumentation isn't just presenting viewpoints, thoughts, opinions.
But argumentation is presenting viewpoints, thoughts,
opinions with an organized system of reasoning.
That's why many of you say, teacher, I wrote paragraphs
and essays, but got low grades because even though
the topic asks for argumentative paragraphs or essays,
you guys don't have argumentation skills or they're not solid,
so the reasoning system in your work is disconnected,
lacks coherence, or doesn't focus on the issue
the topic requires, or you have no reasons or
examples, so of course your scores are low,
whether it's literary or social argumentation.
Then we have description. The essence of description,
we can understand simply as recreating the
characteristics of an object.
Finally, if we talk about what's prominent, we have
exposition. This is what I'm talking about the methods you commonly encounter.
For example, administrative or official methods
related to documents, you won't encounter them
in the national high school exams because
you usually deal with argumentative texts, informational texts,
or literary and artistic texts more often.
That's why here I'm only mentioning the five
prominent expressive methods you'll find in those types of texts.
Exposition is when you see that the text has information
that's accurate and accepted. For example,
the text introduces a writer: born in this year,
died in that year, hometown, notable works, etc.
That's what? That's expository information –
accurate information about the subject.
In this way, we've quickly reviewed the prominent
expressive methods, so going back to this material,
you guys will see "When I was young, I dreamed of the August moon."
For example, just stopping at this sentence.
"Midnight full moon feast with friends." So what
element do you see here? I'm recounting my childhood memories.
When I say recounting childhood memories,
that means what? It's the expressive method called narration.
Right from the first sentence, you see narration:
"When I was young, I dreamed of the August moon."
That's recounting memories, nostalgia of youth that has
never faded in the heart of the character.
So here, you see the element of narration,
and definitely expression. Because in this poem,
the author expresses a longing for the desires her heart has chosen.
Then what else? For example, "Sky and moon so bright,"
"mid-autumn full moon feast with little friends,"
"carrying lanterns, dancing, singing, jumping happily."
What are these elements? Descriptive elements, right?
Recreating characteristics. So just looking at the first two stanzas,
you can identify the very prominent expressive methods here,
right? Besides that, some of you might think
it's argumentative, but you'll see that in "Thirst," poet Xuan Quynh
doesn't present a viewpoint or evaluate; she mainly expresses
the longing in her soul, the intense emotions in her heart
about desires and hopes to turn them into reality.
So here, we finally conclude that there are three
expressive methods: right in the question, you see "various" which means
plural, meaning certainly more than one, you have to list at least two methods.
If I list only one, I'm missing it for sure.
So for this, remember: we have narration, description, and expression,
as we just verified in the material.
Wow, that's awesome. Since most of you might
not use the correct terminology, follow my way to avoid losing points.
Today, let's explore question 1 in the workbook.
This question is not too difficult, right? But it requires
you to read the poem carefully. Not just question 1,
this poem has many good questions.
Okay, so the first question is about identifying the
expressive methods. But remember, "various" means plural, so at least two.
I think in this poem, there are three main ones: narration, expression, description.
If you see other views in my analysis, feel free to comment.
Let's move on to the next question.
Question 2 is about explaining the role of
imagery in conveying the meaning of love in the poem.
You guys know, imagery is very important in poetry –
it helps make poetry vivid and expressive.
In this poem, to express the intense desire, longing,
the poet uses many images from everyday life,
like moon, full moon, feeding on the moon, lanterns, children's play.
These images symbolize innocence, pure love,
and the strong desire to fulfill that love.
So, imagery plays a role in creating an impression
and conveying emotions naturally. Remember the structure: the role is
to help convey ideas, but for this question,
you need to show how imagery contributes to the content
of love in the poem.
I think that's it for now. We'll discuss more later.

Alright, next is question 3.
Let's see, question 3 is about the psychological state of the speaker.
In the poem, the speaker expresses longing, thirst for love.
Her psychological state is complex: happy in memories,
sad now, yearning for the future.
To answer, you need to quote lines from the poem.
For example, in stanza 1: nostalgic, joyful.
In stanza 2: intense longing.
And stanza 3: hopeful despite sadness.
So, the psychological state reflects the theme of thirst.
Okay, I think that's good for now.

What have we learned from this? That practice makes perfect.
Keep reviewing these types of questions.
Alright, until we meet again.
...
Now, the answer for question 1 is narration, expression, description.
Remember, use full names.
If you write "self-narration," it might be wrong.
Okay, back to the book.
...
Next question is identifying the artistic measures.
người ta hỏi các mà mình nêu mỗi một là
This is harder, but let's see.
For example, metaphors in the poem.
The moon is the symbol of beauty.
Okay, I think the video is ending.
