are of course a YouTube channel that focuses  on movies and shows so with that we have social   01:27
media that we are constantly plugged into but  every time I scroll I feel like I'm hit with   01:35
non-stop intense political news it just feels  like both sides are yelling blaming and spinning   01:40
the same stories in opposite directions and it's  exhausting on my brain that's why when I really   01:46
want to explore a topic I trust Straight Arrow  News said it to a member on our brand team here   01:52
that I always am happy when Straight Arrow  News wants to partner up with us because I   01:58
really believe in what they do they actually make  it easy to understand what's going on without all   02:02
the freaking noise no spin no hidden agenda just  balanced factbased reporting like clearing the fog   02:06
off your windshield you can use the browser but  what I really prefer using is their app they've   02:14
got this tool Media Miss which also shows you  stories that the major outlets might not be   02:18
including this way you get a fuller picture  the more real context the more you can draw   02:24
your own conclusion so whether I'm catching up  with my custom news cube or diving into topics I   02:29
care about sn gives me facts and context without  the freaking drama you can literally compare how   02:35
different sides of the political spectrum are  reporting the same story it helps you see the   02:41
whole landscape not just the loudest voices so if  you're like me at all if you're tired of feeling   02:44
confused frustrated or misled there is a better  way to get your news you can go to san.com/real   02:50

she learned to make shoes oh damn she became a cobbler   04:36
or whatever the Spanish word is for then she taught her daughter to make shoes  04:40
this is a really cool intro she taught her son-in-law   04:44

whatever these like doily things are comment  below what are these called music had torn her   04:53
family apart a  04:57
but shoes held them all together and shoes are pretty important you know  05:00
I'm pretty sturdy that woman who's my grand walk on me again  05:03

oh right down the barrel it's  also kind of like Soul too  11:33
that whole thread about being in the zone i'm going to play if he kills me  11:37

now let's get the pop version yeah modern day baby  54:01
props to all involved that was gorgeous that was a gorgeous beautiful and I love   54:06
these drawings i do uh always appreciate  especially you know now that 3D animated   54:13
movies are most of what exists at least when they  throw up the drawings or the concept art or just   54:20
you know the vibes in the credits or whatever  well done Matt Aspbury and Danielle Fineberg   54:26
it's interesting that in these kinds of movies  like the director of photography can be split   54:37
into two like one who takes lead on the camera  so to speak and then the other one who does the   54:41
lighting it's kind of cool what a beautiful film man  54:49
anthony Gonzalez well done it was Guy Garcia  Bernal okay benjamin Brat was Ernesto de   54:52
la Cruz alana Ubach uh golly who was Freda oh we missed it  54:57
i was gonna say is she credited i don't know we'll have to look that up i I I am willing to bet that   55:03
could have been unless we just missed the credit  yeah I feel like Selma would be a funny Easter egg  55:10
gang if you've made it to this point in the  video thank you so much for joining us thus   55:15

that was that was real beautiful and I  feel like we are too every you know most   55:28
people like music but I feel like we are two  especially musically immersed folks we are  55:33
so uh thought it   55:39
was pretty pretty cool that we got to take this  one on and uh as we do uh we've started you know   55:41
a new segment kicking off these reviews with some  Patreon questions so uh before we get to that big   55:48
thanks to Prepper for chopping these highlights  down making music out of this medley of moments we   55:53
appreciate them mightily also leave a like on the  video don't forget to hit the subscribe button and   56:00
uh when you do that you're going to want to ring that bell especially on Senior Dela Cruz   56:06
yeah drop it right on his head that's right drop it on his head dang it  56:12
yeah and if you're listening to this in  podcast form on Apple Spotify anywhere you   56:17
get your podcasts leave us a rating leave us  a little feedback it's always appreciated all   56:21
right our first patron question as soon as the  app decides to work with me here the the listy   56:26
here also shouts out to our man PL for compiling  all this stuff um Ashley Harris asks or or says   56:34
uh and thank you for chiming in and  stoking the fires of our conversation   56:42
miguel knew the basics of his family history but  learned so much more on Dia de los Muertos if you   56:47
had the opportunity to meet your ancestors under  safeish conditions would you and what would you   56:53
uh hope to learn about them oh my god oh man i mean I would absolutely take   56:59
it like if this was possible you know like if if  this literally was how you know the rules of life   57:05
and death worked out and you know you could cross  over back and forth or something like that i think   57:12
it would be really cool like I I know certain  things about my you know family tree going up   57:17
to at least my greatgrandparents but there's a lot  there that I don't know about or you know that you   57:26
know and I'm getting to that point in life too  where you start to kind of think once you live   57:32
enough I think you start to realize you know and  if you're lucky enough to to have family close to   57:38
you you know you you start to kind of realize that  time is precious and also that yeah you want to   57:43
kind of like go back and collect just the details  like you start to find there's that old trope I   57:49
think of like oh grandpa like you're boring story  but like you know I love that stuff and and you   57:54
know the the more I live the more I'm like yeah  give me that like you know let me hear about just   58:00
what life was like for any number of you know  these pictures that I've seen yeah on the wall   58:05
or an old photo album or whatever it might be um I mean yeah I guess I would just hope to learn   58:10
anything possible any kind of I guess what their  passions were like and you know how they filled   58:16
their days and you know what they were like and  what their relationships in within the family   58:23
might have been like all that stuff yeah um 58:29
yeah when I uh when I hear that question I um  I think of my grandpa who uh passed in 2014   58:35
um my grandma on my dad's side passed in '08 and  then um her husband I guess technically also my   58:42
grandpa passed in 20 no uh passed in 94 and I was  born in 95 and uh never got a chance to meet him   58:48
of course but yeah I have a ton of questions um  stories history you know from my dad's side like   58:57
what was it like growing up in Louisiana um like  on my mom's side I'd ask Yeah just so much about   59:06
what it was like growing up in the 60s and just  that time being black in America but I'd also   59:13
want to share my poetry with them because um yeah I mean I I knew my my grandma and I knew   59:18
my grandpa but neither of them ever got to  hear me do poetry before so I'd like to share   59:24
that with them and um just hear on their own  experiences so yeah that's that's what I would   59:28
want to do if I to see somebody that's beautiful yeah man i would spend all that time talking about   59:35
me and not let them get a word in edgewise no no no this is my show  59:40
i am taking time out of my busy  life to come visit your death  59:45
i am the center of attention that's a really  thoughtful question though and I would love to   59:50
if anybody in the comments wants to of this  video wants to chime in by all means please   59:55
uh Tori Jerry thank you for chiming in as well  dia de Muertos is a Mexican heritage tradition   00:00
with roots in indigenous culture to learn more  visit your local library to the people across   00:05
time who supported and inspired us what a lovely  way to end off the credits here that's beautiful  00:10
oh man little little of  frienda style right at the end  00:17
remember us yeah beautiful all   00:20
right tori Jerry Coco three questions coco  is my favorite film hands down beautiful  00:26
that's a comment uh as a Mexican it was a  surreal experience to finally have something   00:32
like this that is so informed by our culture  and whimsy you rarely see children's films   00:37
tackle the loss of death and here's one uh where  it's literally the entire plot how do you think   00:42
uh they did navigating that one did you  learn anything new about this holiday and   00:50
or what stood out to you about it uh and three  this is also one of the only I didn't I didn't   00:55
even register this uh it's one of the only Pixar  films that is a musical how do you think they did   01:01
with the music oh man the musical is incredible i would say yeah start off with question three   01:06
the music like I I'm going to imagine that all the  songs we heard for the most part were originals   01:12
for this movie i'm sure there's probably some  traditional element of music worked in as well  01:17
um but yeah I love the music in this  i thought this was really well handled   01:22
was well dispersed throughout the plot and you  know again to have something that is so heavily   01:26
steeped in you know South American Mexican musical  culture and stuff like that those traditions those   01:33
sounds those instruments um I love that like I I  love the journey you know the cultural aspect of   01:39
the journey of that and also the sounds are  just beautiful and I thought that the array   01:46
of songs that they assembled for this movie kind  of hit a lot of different flavors it wasn't like   01:50
repetitive or redundant or you know fillery yeah  um I think all the music in this movie was really   01:55
strong and really fun and catchy um yeah kind  of similar to yourself i I think I said at the   02:04
beginning like "Oh yeah I've heard that song  before." I was like "Oh yeah." Cuz I I I that   02:11
uh I watched this one time in theaters in 2017 on  Thanksgiving Day and I didn't remember anything   02:16
about it other than Remember Me and Pok Loco  i like I couldn't remember a single element   02:21
of the plot the characters or anything but just  those songs but the fact that music has our main   02:26
character is trying to um embark on or or at least  share to some extent um is so important because it   02:31
it transcends time and and it sticks with you it's  it is what you remember um most like the tune even   02:40
if you don't remember the lyrics of something you  remember the the tune of it you know that's why we   02:49
have Shazam like what's this what's this song with  this melody and this this beat or whatever but   02:52
um yeah I think that what was the other two  questions uh so the first one is yeah how do you   02:58
think they handled the musical element being that  this is one of their rare musical films uh did   03:05
you learn anything new about Dia de Muertos and or  what stood out to you about their depiction of it  03:09
and um how do you think they did navigating the  loss of life like death in the plot basically   03:15
um I guess I didn't realize the importance of  the the photos on the display what was it called  03:22
the friend yeah i And how pivotal that aspect of   03:34
um the celebration is and and and honoring the  heritage and I don't I don't know if the story   03:42
and the and the the basis of them passing through  is something from uh the culture something the   03:50
movie made up in of itself but I think that's  um yeah there's something beautiful about that   03:55
that the the honoring of them is based on your  ability to show your care and your memory of the   04:01
people from the past and you know it it even if it's not like a global legacy  04:13
their their stories and their images live on  through the descendants and then the the level   04:19
of of impact or just like community within  your own um family kind of dictates how how   04:25
um you you're presented and the longevity of  your ability to cross over into this world   04:35
i thought that was beautiful yeah absolutely i feel like this   04:42
is um you know Dia de Muertos especially I think  you know if you if you're growing up and you're   04:45
into Halloween and stuff like that like it's  adjacent in time and so you kind of gather up   04:51
that imagery and and you know over the years too  as you know we have awakened a bit as a society   04:57
in some respects and we have woken up  05:05
yeah well you know I mean like along as much as  people lose their minds uh when you drop that   05:08
word in anywhere I feel like one thing about it  that is um I think demonstra demonstrabably and   05:16
definitively lovely is the way in which people  do go out of their way now to be like hey you   05:23
know you've seen sugar skulls around I'm sure  here's what they actually mean or here's what   05:29
the ritual actually is here's what the tradition  is here's what this image is coming from and so   05:33
I mean in the in the last several years I  feel like you know we've I have learned to   05:38
be sort of more respectful in that regard of  you know what the cultural aspect of it means   05:43
and I think it's really gorgeous like you know  it's it seems like a the kind of tradition that   05:49
anybody could get on board with in a way like  I think it's it's beautifully you know of its   05:54
uh time and place but also you know like the idea  of yes setting up a little altar and leaving out   06:00
these gifts for your family like these are all  little scraps that I had gathered over you know   06:06
many years and and some stuff I had learned when  I was a little younger but I think certainly since   06:11
this movie came out there's been a lot more of  a direct sort of clarification within society of   06:15
just like what is diutos what is the purpose  what is the ritual what is the tradition and   06:20
I I I just love the way this personified that  and and clued into the idea that yeah like this   06:25
is how we you know honor our ancestors this  is you know the we live in a world obviously   06:30
where everything is digitized and and you know  it's not we don't live in the natural world   06:37
the what am I trying to say the further we get  into time the less of the natural world we live in   06:44
and this is sort of a beautiful human thing to do  it's a very sort of you know natural world to me   06:49
kind of thing to do which is yeah set up an altar  get the image of your loved ones so that you can   06:55
you know think on and reflect on them and remember  them leave out some things that they would have   07:00
loved and you know I think it on the one hand  it's like yeah objectively speaking like are   07:04
they really there to grab it who knows but at the  same time I think yeah for us it you know embraces   07:10
death in a different way and and confronts and  sort of um just sits with it in a sense you know   07:17
it's like it might be sad to be reminded that you  know whoever might be on your ofrena is gone but   07:24
at the same time I think there is something that  is sort of celebratory and in tune with the sort   07:30
of continuum of of all things of life of mortality  and and whatnot not to yeah to have something like   07:36
that that brings your loved ones present though  they may be gone and you know those traditions   07:43
of like ooh during this time of the year the veil  is thin between the living and the dead and you   07:49
know the heavens and the earth and whatever  else and um I think this movie to kind of   07:54
melt a couple of your questions together I think  this really nicely handled the concept of death   07:58
um because yeah like it's a Disney trope obviously  of like oh they're going to merk someone's parents   08:05
and this was like yeah there is a a certain whimsy  uh there's a certain melancholy but there's also I   08:09
mean for a movie about death this doesn't skew  as dark as it could or as sad or depressing   08:15
and and in some ways like I can think of more  heartbreaking death stories in the Disney/Pixar   08:21
cannon anyway but at the same time this kind of  demystifies a certain amount of things and yeah   08:28
accepts death as a part of life and shows how  from like a very young age from Miguel's age you   08:34
can be clued into the fact that yeah these are our  relatives who have passed on but also this is how   08:40
we honor them it hurts it always will hurt to some  extent but this is how we keep them alive we can   08:46
create familial bonds and we can celebrate here in  the now together with those of us who are living   08:52
whilst communing over our you know lost loved ones  who we might have known or who we might have only   08:57
just heard about and again the more we live the  more precious that stuff feels and you know it's   09:03
like my grandparents are gone um and I was lucky  enough to hear a lot of stories and be around for   09:08
a lot of stuff but it never feels like it's enough  you know and now you know I'm like okay well you   09:14
know family members come to visit or or I should  do this more with my own direct parents like what   09:19
were grandma and grandpa like or what was great  grandma and grandpa like well tell me some just   09:24
experiences just recount this stuff because like  that's life and that's precious and and so yeah   09:28
like this is I think from my outside understanding  of the again the ritual and the celebration this   09:33
felt very much like some type of macob but  very beautiful and bright fiesta you know and   09:39
uh I thought this was really nicely handled and  I'm glad to see that it appears that again folks   09:46
for whom this is hitting like directly at home  you know people who you know have grown up within   09:51
this culture seem to also really flock to and of  this movie and it's cool to see them nail that and   09:56
uh and you know get it you know spiritually on  point um so yeah I think they navigated the idea   10:02
of death and and the idea of being forgotten and  I think that's an idea too that like again is kind   10:09
of nuanced and sophisticated especially for like  a young viewer to be like "Oh yeah you know like   10:15
you know it's sad to think that these people  are gone but here's how we can honor them."   10:20
And that's even different than simply thinking  about them you know we can actively honor them  10:25
um so yeah I mean like and this just had so  many lovely details and stuff like that so I   10:30
mean yeah um I'm trying to think if I learned  anything specifically new about the holiday i   10:35
think the thing that this gives me is like you  know bits and pieces maybe going in about like   10:41
what certain you know aspects are um in a factual  sense but this movie I think brought the aura and   10:44
brought the sort of cultural intermingling with  everything else as a factor into it you know  10:52
you got to see it kind of in action and in  practice if that makes sense and I think that is   10:58
a a really enchanting detail that then brings you  into again like the beauty of the celebration and   11:02
the idea of like you're like I should do that like  you know we should all do it seems like the kind   11:08
of thing we should all do you know no seriously  11:11
yeah um honor our ancestors   11:13
guys honor their legacy honor their memories keep them alive in way absolutely um okay we   11:16
got one from Dylan Panther Bone this question is  for both John and Aaron for the Coco movie what   11:22
is one song that could take you instantly back  in time much like the grandma at the end of the   11:28
movie for myself Hey Jude by the Beatles always  makes me think of my grandma i would love to hear   11:32
either of your picks as fellow music nerds music  is a powerful thing side note I hope everyone on   11:37
the team is staying hydrated and finding time  to prioritize yourself self-care is important   11:43
and every reject is worth it thank you so much  awesome for that appreciate that what song takes   11:48
you back oh man a few songs the the song uh maybe  not thinking of family but so to speak but a song   11:52
called Nine in the Afternoon by Panic at the Disco i love that song  12:02
i love that song makes me think of karaoke on occasion  12:05
yeah dude makes me think of middle school um yeah dude there that's that one just   12:07
rings true and like nostalgia for me also um  yeah weirdly Demi Lovato's Cool for the Summer   12:14
makes me think of like my early 20s college era sure yeah there's there's a lot of them um those   12:22
are the two I think of at the moment but  I'm trying to think of like childhood songs  12:30
childhood the first one that springs to mind and  I'm sure there are others you know this is the   12:35
kind of question I would think forever about  because there are so many songs that take you   12:39
places but here in this moment I am struck with  listening to Hotel California in the car with   12:42
my dad when we would be like listening to like the  classic rock radio and it's like a song that would   12:48
come on a lot and and I was always like enamored  with like the guitars and the storytelling and   12:53
like you know my dad would emphasize certain lines  of the song or whatever you know it's like it's a   12:57
well known well-loved song but uh such a lovely place  13:02
such a lovely face ready your room at  the Hotel California any time of year   13:06
uh God that's a great question though and and  you guys obviously jump in the comments and let   13:12
us know but uh yeah thank you Dylan just for for  the lovely sentiments the lovely wishes and uh you   13:16
know for for checking in with us as people as well  as uh giving us a really thoughtful question here  13:20
baby when we grinding I just can't deny it that song makes me think of   13:26
uh my parents wedding let's go  13:31
and I did not know what that song meant  until I was a lot older and I was like "Oh  13:33
that is a very horny song if I ever get married  we're going to play stroken the entire time that's   13:38
right followed by Bustin and if you don't know  Bustin just Google Bustin all right flev Doran   13:43
because we got to wrap up pretty quick uh Coco  is the best Pixar film there I've said it coco   13:48
is one of only two films I've convinced my mother  to go to the cinema with me to see and although   13:52
the theme of the film didn't hit personally it  was still a memorable experience for how great   13:57
this film was well yeah and I mean too you know  if you're even again if it's not exactly you know   14:01
your familiar culture or tradition I think that  there's just so much beautiful craftsmanship on   14:06
display with this film that yeah you you couldn't  not get something out of it um let's see let's see   14:11
do we have any more i think that does it for the  patron questions today thank you guys for being   14:17
thoughtful and for jumping in uh you know this  this was really lovely and I I think you know we   14:22
said like we caught this when it first came out and this was like a fresh viewing experience   14:26
and and yeah the animation gorgeous the textures  beautiful i thought the story flowed really well   14:32
the twists and turns of the plot I thought  were really great the whole twist with Dea   14:38
Cruz and also Hector being his actual great  great-grandfather um and just the way they   14:42
personify the family and you know the the lessons  that are learned and the eb and flow and the whole   14:47
back and forth of like I give you my blessing but  I only give it to you this way well I'm going to   14:53
give it to you a certain different way and then  finally ending up on I give you my blessing no   14:57
conditions unconditional love just get back  there that's what matters you know you have   15:01
the gift of life live it to the fullest be with  your family and like the whole resolution with   15:06
Coco I thought was gorgeous like you said like  it had a certain amount of like soap opera like   15:11
plotting at times in the exact right way and just  all the fun in games of like how they design the   15:16
world how they use the lore and then take you  into this world of the dead and him doing the   15:23
Back to the Future fade and all that stuff as  he attempts to get this blessing and and again   15:29
like even when Ernesto is like about to give  him the blessing the thing doesn't light up i   15:34
noticed it's like little details and and there  are tons of like important little details but   15:38
also other just beautiful artistic details in  terms of where all these different skull images   15:43
are like this is a movie you could I bet scrub  and just find endless things to appreciate so  15:49
Rock Stars Coco video exactly so yeah just as   15:54
a feat of animation as a feat of rousing you  know human storytelling as a representation   15:57
of a cultural ritual and you know celebration  and ceremony i just thought this was terrific  16:03
it was beautiful no I I And the voice cast like excellent voice cast  16:09
top-notch voice cast enjoyed it from top to bottom  enjoyed the heart enjoyed the culture enjoyed   16:13
Zim music and yeah I I make go call my mom sure and have have many memories shared of   16:18
uh previous generations my grandpa and  her grandma and my dad and the same i   16:28
just want to remember everybody and everything um I want to rewatch this after Halloween every year  16:32
that would be lovely make this a November watch  16:37
yeah totally nightmare Before Christmas okay real quick before we head out you   16:39
want to guess Rotten Tomatoes let's do it oh god this had to   16:44
have been high man this had to have been  like a 96% for for critics or audience  16:47
audiences 99 you're very close 97  for critics and 94 for audiences  16:52
okay sure i I I would have almost thought that  that you know I thought we could get close but   16:58
hey anywhere in the 90s I think for this is is  pretty nicely you can't scoff at that you know  17:04
cannot and I mean I'm I would be curious  to hear what some people who didn't care   17:10
for this think of it because I mean I  thought this was really beautiful and   17:14
especially this time like this really sang um who would not care for Coco this is a great   17:18
heartfelt film maybe people that don't  believe in music maybe they hate music  17:25
this is funny uh Miguel just a little piece  of trivia was originally only going to play   17:30
the guitar and not sing when director Lee Unkitch  discovered Anthony Gonzalez was in fact a talented   17:34
singer it was decided Miguel would do both so  Anthony could share this talent in the film that   17:40
ising freaking cool uh and this also spent more  days at number one in the box office than any   17:45
other animated film of the 21st century wow  17:51
yeah um Coco okay and   17:54
uh oh this would apparently be banned in China but Oh this film contains specific themes and   17:57
content which would be ordinarily be banned  in China reportedly the Chinese sensor board   18:03
members were so touched by the film they made an  exception and allowed it that is freaking crazy   18:07
um during one visit uh one of the visits to an to  a Wakan family in Mexico for inspiration director   18:14
Leon paid particular attention to a traditional  ofrena that holds pictures of the dead and is also   18:21
used to offer food during di de muertos he noticed  the family basset hound had to be repeatedly   18:26
chased away from the friend because it tried to  eat the food he found this so amusing that he   18:32
included in the scene uh in the movie where Miguel  is horrified that Dante is eating the food um  18:35
apparently there was a John Ratzenberger cameo  in here I did not catch uh and I guess they were   18:42
considering Alfred Molina at one point really um yeah uh at least according to this   18:47
uh Oh oh no never mind i take it back  adrien Molina is the co-director my bad   18:55
um but yeah golly this was terrific gang gang let us know your thoughts on this movie uh I   19:00
loved watching this again for the first time  it felt like and uh yeah man I'm going to be   19:07
reflecting it was very cathartic this movie  like those those this really moved me this   19:13
time especially so uh yeah I couldn't I don't  have enough words for how much I enjoyed this   19:17
aaron thank you for sharing this with me thank you for sharing it with me and yeah   19:23
I had a great time and thank you guys  for watching and we'll see you guys in   19:26
the next one it's been great absolutely and hey  remember me or else I'm gonna get un poco loco 19:30

some music it's time for some animation it's a  musical animation Monday both genres animation's a
medium but that's a whole other conversation both  represented on their respective day of the week

are of course a YouTube channel that focuses  on movies and shows so with that we have social
media that we are constantly plugged into but  every time I scroll I feel like I'm hit with
non-stop intense political news it just feels  like both sides are yelling blaming and spinning
the same stories in opposite directions and it's  exhausting on my brain that's why when I really
want to explore a topic I trust Straight Arrow  News said it to a member on our brand team here
that I always am happy when Straight Arrow  News wants to partner up with us because I
really believe in what they do they actually make  it easy to understand what's going on without all
the freaking noise no spin no hidden agenda just  balanced factbased reporting like clearing the fog
off your windshield you can use the browser but  what I really prefer using is their app they've
got this tool Media Miss which also shows you  stories that the major outlets might not be
including this way you get a fuller picture  the more real context the more you can draw
your own conclusion so whether I'm catching up  with my custom news cube or diving into topics I
care about sn gives me facts and context without  the freaking drama you can literally compare how
different sides of the political spectrum are  reporting the same story it helps you see the
whole landscape not just the loudest voices so if  you're like me at all if you're tired of feeling
confused frustrated or misled there is a better  way to get your news you can go to san.com/real
rejects or click the link in the description  box to download the Straight Arrow News app
today that's what I personally use once again  sen.com/real rejects or download the Straight
Arrow News app this way we can support real  journalism and we can stay properly informed
together thank you again straight era News for  partnering up with us yet again i think that is

[Music]
wow beautiful
beautiful opening shot oh the  smoke rising to the heavens
go sometimes I think I'm cursed cuz  of something that happened before I
was even born i feel you kid
a long time ago there was this  family the papa he was a musician
and he loved coronas he and his family would sing
and dance and counter blessings and race for pinks but he also
had a dream to play for the world uhoh and one day he left with his guitar
oh no and never returned
oh married to the music
you don't need to go get milk there's cows here and the mama she didn't have time to cry over
that walkway musician hey
after oh no oh no damn
she found a way to provide for her daughter it's ironic that this is set to music there it is
she learned to make shoes oh damn she became a cobbler
or whatever the Spanish word is for then she taught her daughter to make shoes
this is a really cool intro she taught her son-in-law
yeah yeah using the traditional little  flags or I don't know what they're called
whatever these like doily things are comment  below what are these called music had torn her
family apart a
but shoes held them all together and shoes are pretty important you know
I'm pretty sturdy that woman who's my grand walk on me again
she died way before I was born oh no my family still tells her story every
year onto Day of the Dead day of the Dead
great intro and her little girl she's my great grandmother
mama Coco hola Mama Coco
how are you for real oh
actually my name is Miguel oh Miguel mama Coco has trouble remembering things
oh Mama Coco i tell her pretty much everything
i like her little chinny chin hairs like this is just way faster
yep and the winner is Lucha Coco
my Aita she's Mama Koko's daughter  aita runs our house just like Mama did
with the picture tore out and everything no music
oh snap dude pizza Planet dang i was just doing Morse
codes with my lips i think we're the  only family in Mexico who hates music
i don't even need a plan damn zaperos hola hey
hey all right my guy
just no music by the house or in the house and yet the world around is filled with it
mhm hey this boy got music in him a
cute little trash dog you are
where's your fur buddy no I'm not supposed to love
music but it's not my fault i mean how could you not
ernesto de la Cruz the  greatest musician of all time
look at that guitar headstock he started out with nobody from
Santa Cecilia like me hey
but when he played music he made  people fall in love with him
oh yeah all these
old movie flourishes but my alltime favorite
Hey I have to say goodbye
[Music] oh no oh no oh no the vibrant [Music]
by a giant bell what a terrible
that's a crazy final song to go out on did that win an Oscar did they nominate
this if he could play music maybe someday I  could too if it wasn't for my family much if
I were you I'd march right up to my family  and say "Hey I'm a musician deal with it."
They're setting up for tonight music competition  for Diautos you want to be like your hero you
should sign up battle the bands look if you're too scared then
well have fun making shoes i want a wooden skeleton
what did Cruz always say "Size your moment
remember me." Carpet
show me what you got moacho show  him that's a nice guitar too
look at that guy look at that  what kind of guitar is that
it's a nylon string
classic guitar i would say it's like a  classical guitar oh abolita no I'm full
please i would just get in a shine i know your tricks
Mariachi he was just showing me  his guitar called Chunklas or
Yeah chunkla
he wants no part of your music mariachi you  keep away from me can a boy get paid though
[Music] crush you with my bosom just like a protective grandma
no no no go away you go it's just
Never name a street dog they'll follow you forever  trouble's a main view stray dog play with it once
and it follows you home i'm mad at that miguel
you know how Aalita feels about the plaza i was just shining shoes
a musician's shoes you should be spitting
on his shoes audacity way too many shoes they're having this talent show and I
thought I might sign up tonight is about family
what if I tap dance is that shoe music that is shoe music
be bringing that devil [ __ ] in here devil steps get that Shuzik out of here is the one night
of the year our ancestors can come visit  us they put their photos on the so their
spirits can cross over that's beautiful
if we don't put them up they can't come a
I don't want to see you end up like like mama papa
never mention that man he's better off forgotten why did you say that papa is home
it's okay i'm here who are you no I'm Coco this is such a beautiful
tradition like beautifully animated  here but just the whole idea of an O
ofrena is like really a gorgeous and like  the Dia de los Merto celebration all that
you're going to get me in trouble boy  someone could hear me oh let's go let's go a
Wow you made it look just like  the classic one it's adorable
you going to bring your hero through god
I have to play the music it's It's not just in me
it is me hey I feel it
my man
he will listen to music yep
wonder what year this takes place in oh  my god I love the details man maybe he
did just build this thing from scratch he's transcending oh my god the zone
this reminds me of the passion and the  transcendent nature of another movie we
watched recently involving music hey absolutely
i had to have faith in my dream no  one was going to hand it to me it
was up to me to reach for that dream  grab it tight and make it come true
oh right down the barrel it's  also kind of like Soul too
that whole thread about being in the zone i'm going to play if he kills me
i would love it if Soul was just about a  guy who gave up jazz to work at the AutoZone
the pedals guide our home i like the way that they're
sprinkling in the actual tradition  through the little incidental dialogue too
yeah it's really nice really  well blended in for us gringoes
oh you bringing that guitar into the Careful uhoh
your Agelita had the most wonderful idea we've all  decided it's time you joined us in the workshop
no oh no
you are a Rivera and a Ria is a shoe maker through and through
no he doesn't want to do that a Rivera runs through it man's
trying to get the musical flow like a that  uh Oh my god no god [Music] dog no god no
catch catch oh god oh god oh crap that's bad oh
right yeah man look out beautiful
oh she's so dear she's so sweet she's She's
too good for this world not only remember  me I'm going to be your memory live it
what are you talking about i'm going to be a musician oh Christ oh no
just listen to me play end of argument
jeez whoa you want to end up
like that man left off your family i don't care if I'm on some stupid
whoa no yeah oh she's a Who fan no guitar no music
that's very rock and roll of you though you'll  feel better after you eat with your family
and make shoes yeah man you You've
kind of weaponized the word against  him made it like a straight jacket
exactly that's a good look for you yeah but damn if those shoes don't hold up well
can I still sign up you got an instrument
no musicians got to bring their own instruments a
Excuse me can I borrow your guitar sorry mucho you guys have a spare guitar
no who has a spare guitar
what am I supposed to do this is your moment okay but how play the paper on where the guitar
is you going to do something  crazy wow that's beautiful
god damn that is gorgeous
i guess I shouldn't take the  Lord's name in vain there
this beautiful memorialia that's happening not at this in this holy hallowed ground
dude the way they're using the focus is  cool like the way they're putting stuff
in the foreground and the background and then  like the opening how you're panning around and
you got like you know rack focus to fireworks  and then back to the you know shrouds and stuff
oh damn his guitar is like in the mausoleum i'm sorry right
that's what I'm talking about smart kid i'm your great great
grandson i need to borrow this surpris under
Oh oh
our family thinks music is a curse none of them  understand but I know you would have you would
have told me to follow my heart [Music] so if  it's all right with you I'm going to play in
the plaza like you did yeah yeah whoa
dang wow it's powerful damn immediately
i guess people would flock to this oh crap
ro I'm sorry
it's not what it looks like oh what oh you did  say that line if even if it kills me earlier
does get knocked into the astral plane miguel mama miguel come home i'm surprised they didn't put
that guitar under glass or something oh no little boy are you okay here let me help you
oh cool oh oh cool
oh no oh wow
that was a cool transition into this  seeing being with amongst the dead
yeah through the grave
a look how big she's getting
wow this is gorgeous it's so touching hello oh what what's going on dante whoa
Miguel miguel oh snap
you're here here here and you  can see us we're your family mh
rosita
hola doria he doesn't seem entirely dead we need  Mama she'll know how to fix this mama she couldn't
cross over she's stuck on the other side do you do like how they have the mustaches
and skeletons that's funny  what if mama can't come to us
then we are going to help damn [Music]
god from one half of the family to the other wow that's a bridge for you
come on Megan it's It's okay
oh my god oh there's like no barrier for the dog
yeah I guess so go between life and death although I guess you know they say
animals can sense things different wow wow that's amazing i want a picture of that
that is a gorgeous design  whoever came up with that
design medal or award wow that is an insane visual
and all the different like skull shapes  through it damn you're all really out there
you thought we weren't oh I don't know i thought it
might have been one of those made up things  that adults tell kids like vitamins whoa
are those Whoa alrizes spirit creatures
they guide souls on their journey watch your step they make everywhere
little poops like an amusement park anything to  declare some curus from my family hey [Music] whoa
oh your photos are in your  son have a great visit a
That's like an like an iPad  with a camera that's funny
that's very funny yes it is i So we skip this
i'm on so many it'll just overwhelm you i do not think so looks like no one put
up your photo okay when I say I was pretty  just now that was a lie i'm just going to
zip right over you won't even know I'm gone i feel like you should at least minimum be
able to cross to your tombstone if I was in  charge of the rules wait what he's sinking
whoa why why can't you go what the hell is happening
who cares flower bridge who's that guy  anything to declare as a matter of fact yes
lol that's a great gag
nice wow beautiful beautiful i demand  to speak to the person in charge my
family always put my photo on your friend  that devil box tells you nothing but lies
it's like an old Mac we ran into um
cuz he knocked it down you the Rivera family well you're cursed
no you stole from the dead
but I wasn't stealing the guitar oh but none of this explains why
I couldn't cross over you took my photo
the way to undo a family curse  is to get your family's blessing
but you got to do it by sunrise equally your hand
oh oh my it's
like Back to the Future but spookier yeah dude your family's here you can get your blessing right
now miguel I give you my blessing i give you my  blessing to go home and to never play music again
what that's messed up oh
don't take it don't touch it don't touch oh
I was not expecting that no skeletons it's funny what
you going to do it again though oh no oh no oh my god
immediately went back and forth whoa
this isn't fair it's my life you go home my way or no way
you really hate music that much i will not let you go down the same path he did
i mean there's lots of ways to go down the path he did it's
not the same person he's family oh no
he's here i need to visit the  restroom that makes me kakitas
fleeing an officer falsifying a unibrow  oh you like tape on his his bone there
interesting on his leg too i want to visit my living
friend so I'm letting you off with a warning a the skull chair the skull lining of the

importantly you can help me i met Look at me Ector
spirit guide wow that's beautiful who has that per Miguel touch
oh it's like a dog ram cat pegasus
up or whatever the you know Mexican folklore
version is this place runs on memories when you're  well remembered people put up your photo and you
get to cross the bridge and visit the living on  the others unless you're No one's ever put up my
picture but you can change that youap
you know you know he's a he's  a busy man the way he walks

now let's get the pop version yeah modern day baby
props to all involved that was gorgeous that was a gorgeous beautiful and I love
these drawings i do uh always appreciate  especially you know now that 3D animated
movies are most of what exists at least when they  throw up the drawings or the concept art or just
you know the vibes in the credits or whatever  well done Matt Aspbury and Danielle Fineberg
it's interesting that in these kinds of movies  like the director of photography can be split
into two like one who takes lead on the camera  so to speak and then the other one who does the
lighting it's kind of cool what a beautiful film man
anthony Gonzalez well done it was Guy Garcia  Bernal okay benjamin Brat was Ernesto de
la Cruz alana Ubach uh golly who was Freda oh we missed it
i was gonna say is she credited i don't know we'll have to look that up i I I am willing to bet that
could have been unless we just missed the credit  yeah I feel like Selma would be a funny Easter egg
gang if you've made it to this point in the  video thank you so much for joining us thus

that was that was real beautiful and I  feel like we are too every you know most
people like music but I feel like we are two  especially musically immersed folks we are
so uh thought it
was pretty pretty cool that we got to take this  one on and uh as we do uh we've started you know
a new segment kicking off these reviews with some  Patreon questions so uh before we get to that big
thanks to Prepper for chopping these highlights  down making music out of this medley of moments we
appreciate them mightily also leave a like on the  video don't forget to hit the subscribe button and
uh when you do that you're going to want to ring that bell especially on Senior Dela Cruz
yeah drop it right on his head that's right drop it on his head dang it
yeah and if you're listening to this in  podcast form on Apple Spotify anywhere you
get your podcasts leave us a rating leave us  a little feedback it's always appreciated all
right our first patron question as soon as the  app decides to work with me here the the listy
here also shouts out to our man PL for compiling  all this stuff um Ashley Harris asks or or says
uh and thank you for chiming in and  stoking the fires of our conversation
miguel knew the basics of his family history but  learned so much more on Dia de los Muertos if you
had the opportunity to meet your ancestors under  safeish conditions would you and what would you
uh hope to learn about them oh my god oh man i mean I would absolutely take
it like if this was possible you know like if if  this literally was how you know the rules of life
and death worked out and you know you could cross  over back and forth or something like that i think
it would be really cool like I I know certain  things about my you know family tree going up
to at least my greatgrandparents but there's a lot  there that I don't know about or you know that you
know and I'm getting to that point in life too  where you start to kind of think once you live
enough I think you start to realize you know and  if you're lucky enough to to have family close to
you you know you you start to kind of realize that  time is precious and also that yeah you want to
kind of like go back and collect just the details  like you start to find there's that old trope I
think of like oh grandpa like you're boring story  but like you know I love that stuff and and you
know the the more I live the more I'm like yeah  give me that like you know let me hear about just
what life was like for any number of you know  these pictures that I've seen yeah on the wall
or an old photo album or whatever it might be um I mean yeah I guess I would just hope to learn
anything possible any kind of I guess what their  passions were like and you know how they filled
their days and you know what they were like and  what their relationships in within the family
might have been like all that stuff yeah um
yeah when I uh when I hear that question I um  I think of my grandpa who uh passed in 2014
um my grandma on my dad's side passed in '08 and  then um her husband I guess technically also my
grandpa passed in 20 no uh passed in 94 and I was  born in 95 and uh never got a chance to meet him
of course but yeah I have a ton of questions um  stories history you know from my dad's side like
what was it like growing up in Louisiana um like  on my mom's side I'd ask Yeah just so much about
what it was like growing up in the 60s and just  that time being black in America but I'd also
want to share my poetry with them because um yeah I mean I I knew my my grandma and I knew
my grandpa but neither of them ever got to  hear me do poetry before so I'd like to share
that with them and um just hear on their own  experiences so yeah that's that's what I would
want to do if I to see somebody that's beautiful yeah man i would spend all that time talking about
me and not let them get a word in edgewise no no no this is my show
i am taking time out of my busy  life to come visit your death
i am the center of attention that's a really  thoughtful question though and I would love to
if anybody in the comments wants to of this  video wants to chime in by all means please
uh Tori Jerry thank you for chiming in as well  dia de Muertos is a Mexican heritage tradition
with roots in indigenous culture to learn more  visit your local library to the people across
time who supported and inspired us what a lovely  way to end off the credits here that's beautiful
oh man little little of  frienda style right at the end
remember us yeah beautiful all
right tori Jerry Coco three questions coco  is my favorite film hands down beautiful
that's a comment uh as a Mexican it was a  surreal experience to finally have something
like this that is so informed by our culture  and whimsy you rarely see children's films
tackle the loss of death and here's one uh where  it's literally the entire plot how do you think
uh they did navigating that one did you  learn anything new about this holiday and
or what stood out to you about it uh and three  this is also one of the only I didn't I didn't
even register this uh it's one of the only Pixar  films that is a musical how do you think they did
with the music oh man the musical is incredible i would say yeah start off with question three
the music like I I'm going to imagine that all the  songs we heard for the most part were originals
for this movie i'm sure there's probably some  traditional element of music worked in as well
um but yeah I love the music in this  i thought this was really well handled
was well dispersed throughout the plot and you  know again to have something that is so heavily
steeped in you know South American Mexican musical  culture and stuff like that those traditions those
sounds those instruments um I love that like I I  love the journey you know the cultural aspect of
the journey of that and also the sounds are  just beautiful and I thought that the array
of songs that they assembled for this movie kind  of hit a lot of different flavors it wasn't like
repetitive or redundant or you know fillery yeah  um I think all the music in this movie was really
strong and really fun and catchy um yeah kind  of similar to yourself i I think I said at the
beginning like "Oh yeah I've heard that song  before." I was like "Oh yeah." Cuz I I I that
uh I watched this one time in theaters in 2017 on  Thanksgiving Day and I didn't remember anything
about it other than Remember Me and Pok Loco  i like I couldn't remember a single element
of the plot the characters or anything but just  those songs but the fact that music has our main
character is trying to um embark on or or at least  share to some extent um is so important because it
it transcends time and and it sticks with you it's  it is what you remember um most like the tune even
if you don't remember the lyrics of something you  remember the the tune of it you know that's why we
have Shazam like what's this what's this song with  this melody and this this beat or whatever but
um yeah I think that what was the other two  questions uh so the first one is yeah how do you
think they handled the musical element being that  this is one of their rare musical films uh did
you learn anything new about Dia de Muertos and or  what stood out to you about their depiction of it
and um how do you think they did navigating the  loss of life like death in the plot basically
um I guess I didn't realize the importance of  the the photos on the display what was it called
the friend yeah i And how pivotal that aspect of
um the celebration is and and and honoring the  heritage and I don't I don't know if the story
and the and the the basis of them passing through  is something from uh the culture something the
movie made up in of itself but I think that's  um yeah there's something beautiful about that
that the the honoring of them is based on your  ability to show your care and your memory of the
people from the past and you know it it even if it's not like a global legacy
their their stories and their images live on  through the descendants and then the the level
of of impact or just like community within  your own um family kind of dictates how how
um you you're presented and the longevity of  your ability to cross over into this world
i thought that was beautiful yeah absolutely i feel like this
is um you know Dia de Muertos especially I think  you know if you if you're growing up and you're
into Halloween and stuff like that like it's  adjacent in time and so you kind of gather up
that imagery and and you know over the years too  as you know we have awakened a bit as a society
in some respects and we have woken up
yeah well you know I mean like along as much as  people lose their minds uh when you drop that
word in anywhere I feel like one thing about it  that is um I think demonstra demonstrabably and
definitively lovely is the way in which people  do go out of their way now to be like hey you
know you've seen sugar skulls around I'm sure  here's what they actually mean or here's what
the ritual actually is here's what the tradition  is here's what this image is coming from and so
I mean in the in the last several years I  feel like you know we've I have learned to
be sort of more respectful in that regard of  you know what the cultural aspect of it means
and I think it's really gorgeous like you know  it's it seems like a the kind of tradition that
anybody could get on board with in a way like  I think it's it's beautifully you know of its
uh time and place but also you know like the idea  of yes setting up a little altar and leaving out
these gifts for your family like these are all  little scraps that I had gathered over you know
many years and and some stuff I had learned when  I was a little younger but I think certainly since
this movie came out there's been a lot more of  a direct sort of clarification within society of
just like what is diutos what is the purpose  what is the ritual what is the tradition and
I I I just love the way this personified that  and and clued into the idea that yeah like this
is how we you know honor our ancestors this  is you know the we live in a world obviously
where everything is digitized and and you know  it's not we don't live in the natural world
the what am I trying to say the further we get  into time the less of the natural world we live in
and this is sort of a beautiful human thing to do  it's a very sort of you know natural world to me
kind of thing to do which is yeah set up an altar  get the image of your loved ones so that you can
you know think on and reflect on them and remember  them leave out some things that they would have
loved and you know I think it on the one hand  it's like yeah objectively speaking like are
they really there to grab it who knows but at the  same time I think yeah for us it you know embraces
death in a different way and and confronts and  sort of um just sits with it in a sense you know
it's like it might be sad to be reminded that you  know whoever might be on your ofrena is gone but
at the same time I think there is something that  is sort of celebratory and in tune with the sort
of continuum of of all things of life of mortality  and and whatnot not to yeah to have something like
that that brings your loved ones present though  they may be gone and you know those traditions
of like ooh during this time of the year the veil  is thin between the living and the dead and you
know the heavens and the earth and whatever  else and um I think this movie to kind of
melt a couple of your questions together I think  this really nicely handled the concept of death
um because yeah like it's a Disney trope obviously  of like oh they're going to merk someone's parents
and this was like yeah there is a a certain whimsy  uh there's a certain melancholy but there's also I
mean for a movie about death this doesn't skew  as dark as it could or as sad or depressing
and and in some ways like I can think of more  heartbreaking death stories in the Disney/Pixar
cannon anyway but at the same time this kind of  demystifies a certain amount of things and yeah
accepts death as a part of life and shows how  from like a very young age from Miguel's age you
can be clued into the fact that yeah these are our  relatives who have passed on but also this is how
we honor them it hurts it always will hurt to some  extent but this is how we keep them alive we can
create familial bonds and we can celebrate here in  the now together with those of us who are living
whilst communing over our you know lost loved ones  who we might have known or who we might have only
just heard about and again the more we live the  more precious that stuff feels and you know it's
like my grandparents are gone um and I was lucky  enough to hear a lot of stories and be around for
a lot of stuff but it never feels like it's enough  you know and now you know I'm like okay well you
know family members come to visit or or I should  do this more with my own direct parents like what
were grandma and grandpa like or what was great  grandma and grandpa like well tell me some just
experiences just recount this stuff because like  that's life and that's precious and and so yeah
like this is I think from my outside understanding  of the again the ritual and the celebration this
felt very much like some type of macob but  very beautiful and bright fiesta you know and
uh I thought this was really nicely handled and  I'm glad to see that it appears that again folks
for whom this is hitting like directly at home  you know people who you know have grown up within
this culture seem to also really flock to and of  this movie and it's cool to see them nail that and
uh and you know get it you know spiritually on  point um so yeah I think they navigated the idea
of death and and the idea of being forgotten and  I think that's an idea too that like again is kind
of nuanced and sophisticated especially for like  a young viewer to be like "Oh yeah you know like
you know it's sad to think that these people  are gone but here's how we can honor them."
And that's even different than simply thinking  about them you know we can actively honor them
um so yeah I mean like and this just had so  many lovely details and stuff like that so I
mean yeah um I'm trying to think if I learned  anything specifically new about the holiday i
think the thing that this gives me is like you  know bits and pieces maybe going in about like
what certain you know aspects are um in a factual  sense but this movie I think brought the aura and
brought the sort of cultural intermingling with  everything else as a factor into it you know
you got to see it kind of in action and in  practice if that makes sense and I think that is
a a really enchanting detail that then brings you  into again like the beauty of the celebration and
the idea of like you're like I should do that like  you know we should all do it seems like the kind
of thing we should all do you know no seriously
yeah um honor our ancestors
guys honor their legacy honor their memories keep them alive in way absolutely um okay we
got one from Dylan Panther Bone this question is  for both John and Aaron for the Coco movie what
is one song that could take you instantly back  in time much like the grandma at the end of the
movie for myself Hey Jude by the Beatles always  makes me think of my grandma i would love to hear
either of your picks as fellow music nerds music  is a powerful thing side note I hope everyone on
the team is staying hydrated and finding time  to prioritize yourself self-care is important
and every reject is worth it thank you so much  awesome for that appreciate that what song takes
you back oh man a few songs the the song uh maybe  not thinking of family but so to speak but a song
called Nine in the Afternoon by Panic at the Disco i love that song
i love that song makes me think of karaoke on occasion
yeah dude makes me think of middle school um yeah dude there that's that one just
rings true and like nostalgia for me also um  yeah weirdly Demi Lovato's Cool for the Summer
makes me think of like my early 20s college era sure yeah there's there's a lot of them um those
are the two I think of at the moment but  I'm trying to think of like childhood songs
childhood the first one that springs to mind and  I'm sure there are others you know this is the
kind of question I would think forever about  because there are so many songs that take you
places but here in this moment I am struck with  listening to Hotel California in the car with
my dad when we would be like listening to like the  classic rock radio and it's like a song that would
come on a lot and and I was always like enamored  with like the guitars and the storytelling and
like you know my dad would emphasize certain lines  of the song or whatever you know it's like it's a
well known well-loved song but uh such a lovely place
such a lovely face ready your room at  the Hotel California any time of year
uh God that's a great question though and and  you guys obviously jump in the comments and let
us know but uh yeah thank you Dylan just for for  the lovely sentiments the lovely wishes and uh you
know for for checking in with us as people as well  as uh giving us a really thoughtful question here
baby when we grinding I just can't deny it that song makes me think of
uh my parents wedding let's go
and I did not know what that song meant  until I was a lot older and I was like "Oh
that is a very horny song if I ever get married  we're going to play stroken the entire time that's
right followed by Bustin and if you don't know  Bustin just Google Bustin all right flev Doran
because we got to wrap up pretty quick uh Coco  is the best Pixar film there I've said it coco
is one of only two films I've convinced my mother  to go to the cinema with me to see and although
the theme of the film didn't hit personally it  was still a memorable experience for how great
this film was well yeah and I mean too you know  if you're even again if it's not exactly you know
your familiar culture or tradition I think that  there's just so much beautiful craftsmanship on
display with this film that yeah you you couldn't  not get something out of it um let's see let's see
do we have any more i think that does it for the  patron questions today thank you guys for being
thoughtful and for jumping in uh you know this  this was really lovely and I I think you know we
said like we caught this when it first came out and this was like a fresh viewing experience
and and yeah the animation gorgeous the textures  beautiful i thought the story flowed really well
the twists and turns of the plot I thought  were really great the whole twist with Dea
Cruz and also Hector being his actual great  great-grandfather um and just the way they
personify the family and you know the the lessons  that are learned and the eb and flow and the whole
back and forth of like I give you my blessing but  I only give it to you this way well I'm going to
give it to you a certain different way and then  finally ending up on I give you my blessing no
conditions unconditional love just get back  there that's what matters you know you have
the gift of life live it to the fullest be with  your family and like the whole resolution with
Coco I thought was gorgeous like you said like  it had a certain amount of like soap opera like
plotting at times in the exact right way and just  all the fun in games of like how they design the
world how they use the lore and then take you  into this world of the dead and him doing the
Back to the Future fade and all that stuff as  he attempts to get this blessing and and again
like even when Ernesto is like about to give  him the blessing the thing doesn't light up i
noticed it's like little details and and there  are tons of like important little details but
also other just beautiful artistic details in  terms of where all these different skull images
are like this is a movie you could I bet scrub  and just find endless things to appreciate so
Rock Stars Coco video exactly so yeah just as
a feat of animation as a feat of rousing you  know human storytelling as a representation
of a cultural ritual and you know celebration  and ceremony i just thought this was terrific
it was beautiful no I I And the voice cast like excellent voice cast
top-notch voice cast enjoyed it from top to bottom  enjoyed the heart enjoyed the culture enjoyed
Zim music and yeah I I make go call my mom sure and have have many memories shared of
uh previous generations my grandpa and  her grandma and my dad and the same i
just want to remember everybody and everything um I want to rewatch this after Halloween every year
that would be lovely make this a November watch
yeah totally nightmare Before Christmas okay real quick before we head out you
want to guess Rotten Tomatoes let's do it oh god this had to
have been high man this had to have been  like a 96% for for critics or audience
audiences 99 you're very close 97  for critics and 94 for audiences
okay sure i I I would have almost thought that  that you know I thought we could get close but
hey anywhere in the 90s I think for this is is  pretty nicely you can't scoff at that you know
cannot and I mean I'm I would be curious  to hear what some people who didn't care
for this think of it because I mean I  thought this was really beautiful and
especially this time like this really sang um who would not care for Coco this is a great
heartfelt film maybe people that don't  believe in music maybe they hate music
this is funny uh Miguel just a little piece  of trivia was originally only going to play
the guitar and not sing when director Lee Unkitch  discovered Anthony Gonzalez was in fact a talented
singer it was decided Miguel would do both so  Anthony could share this talent in the film that
ising freaking cool uh and this also spent more  days at number one in the box office than any
other animated film of the 21st century wow
yeah um Coco okay and
uh oh this would apparently be banned in China but Oh this film contains specific themes and
content which would be ordinarily be banned  in China reportedly the Chinese sensor board
members were so touched by the film they made an  exception and allowed it that is freaking crazy
um during one visit uh one of the visits to an to  a Wakan family in Mexico for inspiration director
Leon paid particular attention to a traditional  ofrena that holds pictures of the dead and is also
used to offer food during di de muertos he noticed  the family basset hound had to be repeatedly
chased away from the friend because it tried to  eat the food he found this so amusing that he
included in the scene uh in the movie where Miguel  is horrified that Dante is eating the food um
apparently there was a John Ratzenberger cameo  in here I did not catch uh and I guess they were
considering Alfred Molina at one point really um yeah uh at least according to this
uh Oh oh no never mind i take it back  adrien Molina is the co-director my bad
um but yeah golly this was terrific gang gang let us know your thoughts on this movie uh I
loved watching this again for the first time  it felt like and uh yeah man I'm going to be
reflecting it was very cathartic this movie  like those those this really moved me this
time especially so uh yeah I couldn't I don't  have enough words for how much I enjoyed this
aaron thank you for sharing this with me thank you for sharing it with me and yeah
I had a great time and thank you guys  for watching and we'll see you guys in
the next one it's been great absolutely and hey  remember me or else I'm gonna get un poco loco
