Many people would say, well, that’s very easy. 00:40
When you are happy, you’re grateful. 00:43
But think again. 00:46
Is it really the happy people that are grateful? 00:48
We all know quite a number of people who have everything 00:53
that it would take to be happy, 00:58
and they are not happy, because they want something else, 01:00
or they want more of the same. 01:03
And we all know people who have lots of misfortune, 01:05
misfortune that we ourselves would not want to have, 01:11
and they are deeply happy. 01:14
They radiate happiness. 01:17
You are surprised. 01:19
Why? Because they are grateful. 01:20
Now, we can ask, what really do we mean by gratefulness? 01:23
And how does it work? 01:30
Something’s given to us that’s valuable to us. 01:32
And it’s really given. 01:36
These two things have to come together. 01:38
It has to be something valuable, and it's a real gift. 01:40
And when these two things come together, 01:44
then gratefulness spontaneously rises in my heart, 01:47
happiness spontaneously rises in my heart. 01:51
That’s how gratefulness happens. 01:55
Now, the key to all this 01:57
is that we cannot only experience this once in a while. 02:01
We can be people who live gratefully. 02:07
And how can we live gratefully? 02:11
By experiencing, 02:14
by becoming aware that every moment is a given moment, as we say. 02:16
It’s a gift. 02:22
You have no way of assuring that there will be another moment given to you, 02:23
and yet, that’s the most valuable thing that can ever be given to us, 02:29
this moment, with all the opportunity that it contains. 02:34
Does that mean that we can be grateful for everything? 02:39
Certainly not. 02:44
We cannot be grateful for violence, for war, for oppression, for exploitation. 02:46
On the personal level, 02:53
we cannot be grateful for the loss of a friend, for unfaithfulness, 02:54
for bereavement. 02:59
But I didn’t say we can be grateful for everything. 03:01
I said we can be grateful in every given moment for the opportunity, 03:05
and even when we are confronted with something that is terribly difficult, 03:11
we can rise to this occasion 03:17
and respond to the opportunity that is given to us. 03:20
So how can each one of us find a method for living gratefully, 03:25
not just once in a while being grateful, but moment by moment to be grateful? 03:31
How can we do it? 03:35
It’s a very simple method: Stop. Look. Go. 03:36
That’s all. 03:42
But how often do we stop? 03:44
We rush through life; we don’t stop. 03:47
We miss the opportunity because we don’t stop. 03:50
We have to stop. 03:54
We have to get quiet. 03:56
And we have to build stop signs into our lives. 03:58
And when you stop, then the next thing is to look. 04:03
You look. You open your eyes. You open your ears. You open your nose. 04:07
You open all your senses for this wonderful richness that is given to us. 04:12
There is no end to it, and that is what life is all about, 04:18
to enjoy, to enjoy what is given to us. 04:21
And then we can also open our hearts, our hearts for the opportunities, 04:25
for the opportunities also to help others, to make others happy, 04:31
because nothing makes us more happy than when all of us are happy. 04:35
And when we open our hearts to the opportunities, 04:39
the opportunities invite us to do something, 04:43
and that is the third. 04:47
Stop, look, and then go, and really do something. 04:48
And what we can do is whatever life offers to you in that present moment. 04:53
There is a wave of gratefulness 04:59
because people are becoming aware how important this is 05:01
and how this can change our world, 05:05
because if you’re grateful, you’re not fearful. 05:08
If you're not fearful, you're not violent. 05:12
If you’re grateful, you act out of a sense of enough 05:15
and not of a sense of scarcity, and you’re willing to share. 05:19
If you're grateful, you are enjoying the differences between people 05:23
and you are respectful to everybody. 05:28
And that changes this power pyramid under which we live. 05:30
What we need is a networking of smaller groups, 05:34
smaller and smaller groups who know one another, 05:39
who interact with one another, 05:42
and that is a grateful world. 05:44
