hello this is Taylor this is my fourth 00:00
winter in New York City and pretty much 00:03
every winter before this one I kind of 00:05
just hibernated and waited it out until 00:08
the first signs of spring rolled around 00:10
but a few weeks ago I noticed this 00:12
winter feels different it's my coldest 00:15
one yet but I'm weirdly enjoying it so I 00:18
asked myself why and I figured out 00:21
exactly what I'm doing differently to 00:23
stop wasting my winter so let's dive 00:25
into these changes and I bet that some 00:28
of them might help you 00:30
too okay this first section of habits I 00:32
am poetically naming chasing sunlight 00:35
making peace with early Darkness so 00:38
let's lay some foundation for the rest 00:40
of these Habits by addressing the 00:42
elephant in the room the thing that I 00:44
think we all hate the most about winter 00:45
it gets dark so early and if you live 00:48
even further north than New York City I 00:51
feel for you so my first big change was 00:53
so simple but extremely effective and it 00:55
kind of happened on accident I started 00:58
chasing those precious hours of sunlight 01:00
by shifting my entire schedule earlier 01:03
and by waking up considerably earlier 01:05
than I did last winter I've gained back 01:07
about 10 hours of sunlight every week to 01:09
put numbers to it this time last year I 01:12
was waking up at 01:14
93010 I'm a total Night Owl by Nature I 01:16
was also working a lot later into the 01:18
evening last year but these days I'm 01:20
waking up between 7:30 and 8:30 which is 01:22
early for me if you know me I was even 01:25
waking up a little bit earlier than that 01:26
for a while but 7:30 to 8:30 is what 01:28
I've kind of settled at the way that I 01:30
transitioned earlier kind of happened on 01:31
accident so whenever I fly West I really 01:34
enjoy taking advantage of that jet lag 01:37
and going to bed earlier and waking up 01:39
earlier and after doing that enough 01:40
times over the years usually going home 01:41
to California for holidays to visit my 01:43
parents or what have you I just kind of 01:45
noticed that I really liked the feeling 01:47
of Shifting things a bit earlier than I 01:49
was used to and after a recent trip from 01:50
Lisbon Portugal back to New York just a 01:53
couple months ago it just stuck okay but 01:55
here's the real game Cher with this new 01:57
habit it's not just about getting back 02:00
sunlight this new habit has pretty much 02:02
completely eliminated those depressing 02:05
winter Blues I used to feel from waking 02:07
up kind of late and then feeling like 02:10
I'd wasted an entire day when the sun 02:11
sets at 5:00 p.m. now when the Sun goes 02:13
down early I'm kind of okay with it 02:15
because I woke up early and had finished 02:17
most of my work by that point this 02:19
schedule shift also includes earlier 02:20
dinners earlier weekend plans and 02:22
earlier bedtime in a way it feels like 02:24
the best time for rest and Recovery 02:26
where I'm using Winter's natural 02:28
slowdown of pace as an opportunity to 02:31
get plenty of rest and time to 02:33
rejuvenate since in the summer I'm just 02:35
always on the go always outside jumping 02:37
between plans getting late dinners going 02:39
to bed late and I also see it as a great 02:41
time to invest in future me from a 02:43
business perspective for example I'm 02:45
going through the process of hiring a 02:47
video editor now so that way the ramp up 02:49
training period happens before the 02:51
travel plans and faster Pace that comes 02:54
with spring and summer so to conclude 02:56
instead of dreading early Darkness like 02:58
I used to I now see it as an opportunity 03:00
to start things earlier and now I look 03:02
forward to my evening routine I swear it 03:05
actually feels luxurious like I'm 03:07
allowing myself to stop working at an 03:08
early hour okay so this schedule shift 03:10
has created a strong foundation for me 03:12
to now fill in the gaps with activities 03:15
and plans and rituals which brings us to 03:17
what is probably my favorite section of 03:20
this video anticipation architecture 03:22
design days you actually look forward to 03:25
I'm making these titles sound so 03:28
pretentious so there are some really 03:29
great Neuroscience studies showing that 03:30
dopamine which is oftenly referred to as 03:33
the pleasure neurotransmitter spikes 03:35
even more in humans during the 03:38
anticipation of a reward than during 03:40
receiving the reward itself and this 03:43
explains why the buildup to Big special 03:45
events like Christmas or a vacation 03:47
often feel more exciting than the event 03:49
itself so something I've done is 03:51
effectively hack my brains reward system 03:54
by creating a very specific winter 03:56
ritual that I seriously look forward to 03:59
every week fair warning my ritual is 04:02
kind of Hardo biohacking Fitness girly 04:04
Andrew hberman coated but I'll tell you 04:07
what it is anyway and then you can 04:09
design your own winter ritual so about a 04:10
month ago without much planning a friend 04:12
and I pretty spontaneously decided to go 04:14
on a run together now it was freezing 04:16
outside but we were like screw it we'll 04:18
wear gloves we'll warm up pretty quickly 04:20
from running it'll be fun I was a little 04:22
nervous though I'm not going to lie I am 04:23
pretty good with high-intensity interval 04:25
training workouts and strength training 04:27
but but endurance-based cardio workouts 04:29
I'm not as good at and historically have 04:31
just not enjoyed as much as a result but 04:33
I knew my friend wouldn't mind going 04:35
kind of slow with me and it was just a 04:37
fun active thing to do together so we 04:39
went for it fast forward an hour the run 04:41
is over and yeah it was challenging but 04:43
it was supposed to be and I felt so good 04:46
I had a pep in my step then we were like 04:48
you know what sounds really good right 04:51
now a smoothie so we extended our run to 04:52
the grocery store to pick up ingredients 04:55
went home and made this healthy protein 04:57
green smoothie which also tasted good 04:59
what we did next will blow your mind see 05:01
this friend of mine has a steam shower 05:03
we turn it on and sit in the 120° steam 05:06
room for about 20 minutes so nice and 05:09
then we take our respective showers 05:12
after that fast forward a couple hours 05:13
we then bundle up and walk to a cozy 05:15
nearby Thai restaurant and have a 05:17
delicious meal followed by a cozy movie 05:19
night inside by the end of the day we 05:22
were like wait that was kind of the 05:24
perfect Sunday 5 weeks later we have 05:26
done the same exact routine every single 05:28
Sunday and I'm telling you it'll be a 05:31
Tuesday and I will be looking forward to 05:33
my Sunday so I don't tell you this just 05:35
to brag about my healthy bioh hacky 05:36
luxurious Sunday routine or the fact 05:39
that I have a friend with a steam shower 05:41
but rather to highlight that the 05:42
anticipation of this delightful new 05:44
winter day that we designed has created 05:47
this positive feedback loop that's 05:49
helped me combat the hibernation winter 05:50
Blues I look forward to it all week and 05:53
then the routine itself is also very 05:55
healthy so I actually have the 05:57
endorphins and all of the other happy 05:58
hormones afterwards just sets me up for 06:00
a great week kind of the opposite of 06:02
Sunday scaries so to bring this all back 06:04
down to earth for a sec I would 06:06
seriously recommend designing some 06:08
winter day ritual that you can look 06:10
forward to every week if the Run plus 06:12
green smoothie isn't your thing maybe 06:14
it's a weekly coffee shop hang with 06:16
friends followed by an enriching indoor 06:18
activity like going to an art gallery or 06:20
a museum or something much Chiller and 06:22
by yourself like a morning coffee and 06:24
pastry run followed by a little in your 06:27
favorite Park and then back home to read 06:30
your book for an hour on the couch 06:32
whatever floats your boat and then I 06:33
think we can also apply this on the 06:35
micro level designing little habits here 06:37
and there that bring you some 06:39
anticipation joy and real- time Joy 06:40
anyways all of this of course applies to 06:43
all seasons but I have found it 06:45
especially helpful in the winter where I 06:47
could use those extra little nudges here 06:49
and there to feel happy and energized in 06:50
conclusion hack your brains reward 06:52
system and design days and rituals that 06:54
you actually look forward to I'm telling 06:56
you it makes win a lot more enjoyable 06:58
now a bit of a change from my Hardo 07:00
Sunday ritual this would not be a video 07:03
about my New York City winter routine if 07:05
we didn't talk cozy core intentional 07:07
indoor living the silver lining of it 07:10
being freezing outside is the guilt-free 07:12
excuse to do plenty of things indoors 07:14
but instead of just rotting in bed or 07:17
Doom scrolling on your phone all day 07:19
we're talking intentional gratifying 07:21
indoor activities so something I've 07:23
started doing a lot more this winter is 07:25
trading Uber Eats and doom scrolling for 07:27
home-cooked meals and movie Nights again 07:29
in comparison to Summer where I'm eating 07:32
out so many meals because it's just a 07:34
joy to be outside meeting up with 07:36
friends having a beer on the patio I'm 07:37
now planning nights where I cook at home 07:39
either by myself or with someone else 07:41
and something that's made this a lot 07:43
more fun is to follow new recipes or use 07:44
new ingredients instead of just cooking 07:47
my same old same old my friend and I 07:50
cooked this one this past weekend we 07:51
added pasta and butter to it it was 07:53
delicious a little garbanzo bean heavy 07:55
but delicious and we watched a movie and 07:58
it was just a delightful cozy weekend 07:59
night okay in addition to the cooking 08:02
movie Nights I've talked before about 08:04
having a Cozy home environment with warm 08:06
diffused lights instead of cool overhead 08:09
lights but I think it's all the more 08:11
important to have a really luxurious 08:13
nighttime routine that you really look 08:16
forward to in the winter because it gets 08:18
dark early so you might as well enjoy it 08:20
my nighttime routine is dimming my 08:22
lights taking a warm shower brushing my 08:24
teeth and skincare getting in bed and 08:26
reading for 20 to 45 minutes before 08:28
sleeping I also do not mess around with 08:30
skincare in the winter I shamelessly 08:32
bring aquafor or Vaseline everywhere to 08:34
take care of CHA lips dry hands or what 08:36
have you I also lathered on before bed 08:39
as needed Game Changer now as for 08:41
balancing social life with indoor 08:43
activities I definitely still do a mix 08:46
of both so when I'm not cooking at home 08:48
and I'm meeting friends out for dinner I 08:50
try to choose a restaurant that has warm 08:51
cozy Vibes in soup or F I love to have 08:54
in the winter it just warms up my my 08:57
innards I think you get the idea a lot 08:59
of this is really just accepting that 09:01
it's cold and dark outside and leaning 09:03
in and just making the most of it so 09:05
it's actually exciting so this has been 09:06
a really enjoyable change to make indoor 09:08
activities in the winter feel special 09:10
rather than restrictive okay this 09:13
section might sound a little too on the 09:14
nose but I'd be remissed to not include 09:16
it in a video about my New York City 09:18
winter routine this section is called 09:20
winter warrior physical adaptation I'm 09:22
having a lot of fun with these titles 09:26
there is a reason I still sit bike 09:27
everywhere even when the weather looks 09:30
like this I took this picture there is a 09:32
reason why I still get 10,000 steps or 09:34
more every single day even when we got 09:36
this going on I also took this picture 09:38
last week it's because there is no such 09:41
thing as bad weather only unsuitable 09:43
clothing I'm not just going to say to 09:46
wear a big jacket although that is a 09:48
seriously good place to start but the 09:50
game Cher of proper winter gear 09:52
literally enables you to maintain most 09:54
of your fall spring and summer habit and 09:57
for me in New York specifically a huge 09:59
appeal of this city is that it is so 10:02
incredibly walkable I walk everywhere 10:05
and if I don't walk then I City bike and 10:07
if I don't bike then I take the subway 10:09
Uber is a last resort unless it's late 10:11
and it's for safety or time-saving 10:14
convenience so the idea that I would 10:16
spend a whole season not enjoying the 10:17
walkability is a no-o so yes starting 10:20
with a proper winter jacket I absolutely 10:23
love mine it's Patagonia I think 800 10:25
fill goose down might be a th is that a 10:28
thing I don't know I'll check worth 10:30
every penny in pretty much a force field 10:32
to any temperature that New York City 10:34
gets this definitely was a Splurge but 10:36
of course there are lots of amazing 10:37
options that are more affordable and on 10:39
the coldest days I will double up with a 10:41
mid layer underneath but that's mainly 10:43
because I'm a big baby with cold 10:45
temperatures I'm from Southern 10:46
California suei then the double layering 10:48
leggings has also been a game changer 10:51
especially for biking I wear these 10:54
fleece line leggings underneath my jeans 10:56
I'll link everything below by the way 10:58
and sometimes even my Lululemon leggings 10:59
really any other insulating layer will 11:02
help and then of course warm gloves 11:04
especially while biking since our 11:06
extremities get cold so quickly and 11:07
fleece line beanies and scarves I've 11:09
been doing a lot more fun fact heat loss 11:11
happens evenly across Exposed Skin So 11:13
the key is really to just cover your 11:16
entire body now yes I totally admit that 11:18
I live in New York City it's concrete 11:22
they salt the streets I will never be in 11:24
a situation here where I'm walking in 11:26
need deep snow and so if you live in the 11:28
tundra there are probably some safety 11:30
precautions you might want to consider 11:32
that I'm not considering I'm not an 11:34
expert on them but you probably are cuz 11:36
you live in that environment but my 11:37
point stands dress appropriately I know 11:39
this was probably the most obvious 11:41
winter tip I could have given you to 11:42
bundle up but I've been doing it a lot 11:44
better this year and taking that extra 11:46
annoying minute to seriously prepare 11:49
every single time I go outside it's been 11:51
totally worth it to maintain an active 11:53
lifestyle and to just enjoy the winter 11:55
more let me know what your winter hacks 11:57
are in the comments below I will read 11:59
every single one and also sorry to the 12:01
southern hemisphere viewers you can come 12:03
back and watch this in 6 months so that 12:05
is my New York City winter routine and 12:07
the new habits that I have implemented 12:09
to stop hibernating and wasting my 12:11
winter hit the thumbs up if you enjoyed 12:13
And subscribe for more and until next 12:15
time turtle 12:17
[Music] 12:19
out yeah 12:23

it in a video about my New York City
winter routine this section is called
winter warrior physical adaptation I'm
having a lot of fun with these titles
there is a reason I still sit bike
everywhere even when the weather looks
like this I took this picture there is a
reason why I still get 10,000 steps or
more every single day even when we got
this going on I also took this picture
last week it's because there is no such
thing as bad weather only unsuitable
clothing I'm not just going to say to
wear a big jacket although that is a
seriously good place to start but the
game Cher of proper winter gear
literally enables you to maintain most
of your fall spring and summer habit and
for me in New York specifically a huge
appeal of this city is that it is so
incredibly walkable I walk everywhere
and if I don't walk then I City bike and
if I don't bike then I take the subway
Uber is a last resort unless it's late
and it's for safety or time-saving
convenience so the idea that I would
spend a whole season not enjoying the
walkability is a no-o so yes starting
with a proper winter jacket I absolutely
love mine it's Patagonia I think 800
fill goose down might be a th is that a
thing I don't know I'll check worth
every penny in pretty much a force field
to any temperature that New York City
gets this definitely was a Splurge but
of course there are lots of amazing
options that are more affordable and on
the coldest days I will double up with a
mid layer underneath but that's mainly
because I'm a big baby with cold
temperatures I'm from Southern
California suei then the double layering
leggings has also been a game changer
especially for biking I wear these
fleece line leggings underneath my jeans
I'll link everything below by the way
and sometimes even my Lululemon leggings
really any other insulating layer will
help and then of course warm gloves
especially while biking since our
extremities get cold so quickly and
fleece line beanies and scarves I've
been doing a lot more fun fact heat loss
happens evenly across Exposed Skin So
the key is really to just cover your
entire body now yes I totally admit that
I live in New York City it's concrete
they salt the streets I will never be in
a situation here where I'm walking in
need deep snow and so if you live in the
tundra there are probably some safety
precautions you might want to consider
that I'm not considering I'm not an
expert on them but you probably are cuz
you live in that environment but my
point stands dress appropriately I know
this was probably the most obvious
winter tip I could have given you to
bundle up but I've been doing it a lot
better this year and taking that extra
annoying minute to seriously prepare
every single time I go outside it's been
totally worth it to maintain an active
lifestyle and to just enjoy the winter
more let me know what your winter hacks
are in the comments below I will read
every single one and also sorry to the
southern hemisphere viewers you can come
back and watch this in 6 months so that
is my New York City winter routine and
the new habits that I have implemented
to stop hibernating and wasting my
winter hit the thumbs up if you enjoyed
And subscribe for more and until next
time turtle
