these scams can make a ton of money and 00:00
they are one of the most popular types 00:03
of scam in Vietnam right now what's up 00:06
everyone podcast slow and clear go whats 00:13
up 00:17

to talk about scams and how to avoid 00:25
them 00:29

of the podcast where we'll review some 00:34
highlevel vocabulary words from this 00:37
podcast that will help you to take your 00:41
English to the next 00:44
level but first let me tell you a quick 00:46
story about the first time in my life 00:50
that I got scammed so the first time I 00:54
got scammed was in a game called 00:57
RuneScape now in this game I had spent 01:01
weeks saving up to buy this really cool 01:04
item that I was pretty proud of so I was 01:08
wearing the item and walking around when 01:14
this player came up to me and told me he 01:17
knew a secret to duplicate the 01:21
item duplicate means to make a copy of 01:25
it so to make two of them so instead of 01:29
one item I would have 01:32
two and he said all I needed to do was 01:34
drop my armor on the ground and then 01:38
press alt f4 on my keyboard and then I 01:41
would magically have two of them because 01:46
of a bug in the 01:49
game so being around 10 years old and 01:51
extremely naive I thought wow okay 01:55
sounds good let's do 01:59
it so I dropped the item on the ground 02:01
and pressed alt f4 now what I didn't 02:05
know was that alt f4 is the keyboard 02:09
shortcut to close your program 02:13
immediately so when I pressed it my game 02:17
closed and by the time I logged back in 02:21
the other player had picked up my item 02:25
and disappeared 02:28
at the time I was really devastated 02:30
because I had spent a lot of time to get 02:34
that item and then it was gone just like 02:38
that and that was the first time in my 02:41
life that I got scammed and I still 02:45
remember it till this 02:48
day now it's kind of funny when I look 02:50
back on it but at that time of course I 02:54
was pretty heartbroken about it 02:57
however I did learn a valuable lesson 03:01
that is if something sounds too good to 03:05
be true then it probably 03:08
is ever since then I've been really 03:12
careful about scams so luckily it was 03:15
just an item in a video game and not 03:19
real money so I told you this story just 03:22
to show that scams are everywhere and 03:26
anybody can get scammed now this leads 03:30
to the main content of this podcast so 03:33

including a very famous scam in Vietnam 03:58
that was uncovered just a few months 04:01
ago third uh we'll talk about the 04:05
psychology behind scams like why even 04:08
smart people fall for them and finally 04:11

much all right let's get started first 05:34
with the evolution of scams as you 05:38
probably know scams aren't really new 05:42
they've been around basically forever in 05:45
the old days you had these guys called 05:48
snake oil salesmen who would travel from 05:51
town to town selling fake medicine that 05:55
they claimed could cure anything from 05:59
baldness to cancer you name it and these 06:03
people would set up in a market or Town 06:07
Square and make these crazy claims about 06:10
their products like oh it can cure this 06:14
or it can help you do that so of course 06:17
people would buy their products and it 06:21
wouldn't have those effects but by the 06:23
time they realized that those snake oil 06:26
sales men were already in another 06:29
town so that is an old type of scam but 06:32
as technology has grown scams of course 06:37
have evolved too they've gone from male 06:41
scams to phone scams to email scams and 06:45
now we have social media and messaging 06:49
app 06:53
scams the platforms change but the basic 06:54
techniques stay pretty much the same 06:58
what's different now is the 07:02
scale in the past a 07:05
scammer might have been able to trick a 07:07
few dozen people in their 07:10
lifetime but now they can reach millions 07:13
of potential victims with modern 07:16
technology like what we've seen with a 07:20
few big Ponzi schemes and you know 07:23
schemes on messaging apps zow WhatsApp 07:27
all those things so one thing that many 07:31
people wonder is why do scams continue 07:34
to persist and evolve despite increased 07:39
awareness of them well it's because they 07:44
work even if only 1% of people fall for 07:49
a scam if you send it to a million 07:54
people that's still 07:58
10,000 victims and that's a lot of money 08:00
and scammers are always adapting and 08:04
changing their methods as soon as people 08:07
catch on to one type of scam the 08:10
scammers modify it or create a new one 08:13
so now speaking of new scams let's move 08:17
on to some common modern scams in 08:21
Vietnam for each of these I'll tell you 08:24
a story about each one to help you 08:27
understand how they 08:31
work first let's talk about one of the 08:33
most dangerous scams in Vietnam right 08:36
now which is the police impersonation 08:40
scam this scam is something that I've 08:43
heard about a lot like I've seen the 08:46
warnings um posted in the elevator and 08:49
I've even gotten texts to my phone of 08:53
people claiming to be the police 08:56
so here's how it typically works first 09:00
you receive a call or a text from 09:03
someone claiming to be a police officer 09:06
or like a government 09:10
official they might even spoof their 09:13
caller ID to make it look like they're 09:16
calling you from an official 09:19
number they tell you that you're 09:21
involved in some kind of legal trouble 09:24
like maybe they say your dcard was found 09:27
at a crime scene or that you're 09:30
suspected of money laundering or tax 09:33
evasion and the scammer will sound very 09:38
official and they might even know some 09:42
basic information about you like your 09:45
full name and your address then they'll 09:49
create a sense of fear and panic saying 09:52
that you could be arrested and unless 09:56
you cooperate with their 10:00
investigation sometimes uh they'll 10:03
transfer you to other officers to make 10:05
it seem more legitimate but eventually 10:09
they'll ask you to transfer money to a 10:13
like secure government account or 10:16
something for safekeeping during the 10:19
investigation or to prove your money 10:23
isn't from illegal activities 10:26
once you transfer the money of course 10:30
it's gone and you'll never hear from 10:32
these police officers 10:35
again so remember of course real police 10:38
officers in Vietnam will never call you 10:42
and ask you for money transfers so 10:45
remember if you get a call or a text 10:48
like this just hang up the call or 10:51
ignore the text and you could report it 10:54
to the police another very common scam 10:57
in Vietnam is the OTP which means 11:01
one-time password scam this scam is 11:05
super important to know about because it 11:09
can happen to anyone with a bank account 11:13
or ewallet so here's how it works first 11:16
you get a call or a message from someone 11:21
claiming to be from your bank or Momo 11:24
zope or any other Financial 11:28
Service they might say they're updating 11:32
their system checking for suspicious 11:35
activity or maybe that you've won a 11:38
prize then they'll ask you to share the 11:42
OTP code that was just sent to your 11:46
phone what's actually happening is that 11:50
the scammer is trying to log into your 11:53
account on their device and and this 11:56
triggers the real service to send you an 11:59
OTP if you give them that code they'll 12:04
have full access to your account and 12:07
they can transfer all the money out or 12:10
they can make payments with your account 12:13
whatever so whatever you do do not share 12:16
uh your OTP with anyone no matter who 12:21
they claim to be because no legit bank 12:25
or ewallet service or company will ever 12:30
ask you for your OTP over the phone or 12:33
in a message all right uh next scam now 12:38
let's talk about Marketplace scams and 12:42
these are very common in 12:45
Vietnam here's how it would happen so 12:48
let's say you're browsing chat or 12:52
Facebook Marketplace and you see an 12:55
incred rible deal maybe it's the new 12:58
iPhone for 50% off or a luxury bag that 13:01
usually costs 20 million Dong but now 13:06
it's listed for Just 2 million sounds 13:10
like a great deal so you message the 13:14
seller but the seller has a story maybe 13:17
they got that item as a gift and they 13:21
don't need it or maybe they're moving 13:25
abroad and they need to sell it 13:27
quickly so when you talk to them they're 13:30
super friendly and they're helpful but 13:34
there's always a catch like they can't 13:38
meet in person or the item needs to be 13:41
shipped from far away so they ask for 13:44
payment upfront meaning payment before 13:48
you get the item maybe that could be 13:52
through a bank transfer or an ewallet 13:55
once they receive your money they 14:00
disappear or they send you a fake or 14:02
just a completely different 14:06
item now this happens a lot especially 14:09
with high value items like phones and 14:13
motorbikes so remember if a deal seems 14:16
too good to be true then it probably is 14:20
all right so another type of scam that 14:25
is common not just in Vietnam but around 14:27
the world is called the romance scam 14:31
these scams usually Target women and it 14:35
might be done differently depending on 14:39
the country but in Western countries 14:41
like the USA and Canada scammers often 14:44
pose as people in the military who are 14:48
deployed overseas here's a typical story 14:53
of how this scam would happen there was 14:56
a woman let's call her Sarah who met a 14:59
guy online who claimed to be an American 15:03
Soldier stationed in 15:07
Afghanistan his profile showed a 15:09
handsome man in military uniform and he 15:12
was very charming and attentive when he 15:16
spoke to her he would message her good 15:20
morning and good night every day despite 15:23
the time difference CU he such a good 15:27
guy and he would call her when he could 15:29
and he just really seemed invested in 15:34
learning about her 15:37
life so after about 2 months of talking 15:39
he told Sarah he was having trouble 15:44
accessing his military pay and needed a 15:46
short-term loan of around 15:50
$22,000 which he promised to pay back 15:53
once he returned to the 15:57
us because she trusted him and thought 15:59
they had a real connection she sent him 16:03
the 16:05
money then he needed more money for 16:06
another emergency like maybe medical 16:10
bills or to help a fellow Soldier 16:13
eventually she'd realized she'd been 16:17
scammed when he disappeared after 16:19
getting about 16:22
$88,000 from 16:24
her you know sometimes these scams are 16:26
even way more money they could be 50,000 16:29
100,000 I've seen cases where it's even 16:32
a few hundred 16:35
th000 the thing is for many of these 16:37
people the worst part wasn't even losing 16:40
the money but it was finding out that 16:44
the relationship that they thought was 16:46
real was actually all a lie so this type 16:49
of scam happens to people all over the 16:54
world many of them uh are women but they 16:58
can happen uh to men too and throughout 17:01
these scams the pattern is the same uh 17:04
the person builds trust they create an 17:08
emergency and then they ask for money 17:11
and after that they disappear okay so 17:14
the last type of scam we'll talk about 17:18
is the investment scam these scams can 17:20
make a ton of money and they are one of 17:24
the most popular types of scam in 17:28
Vietnam right now so here's how the 17:31
typical investment scam would happen so 17:35
imagine you're scrolling through social 17:39
media and you see a popular influencer 17:41
showing off luxury cars and Villas 17:45
claiming they made their Fortune through 17:49
Forex Trading or cryptocurrency or 17:52
something like that so you look into it 17:56
a bit and you find out they have offices 17:58
across Vietnam professional look 18:02
websites and they even use real trading 18:05
platforms everything seems 18:09
legit then they offer you an investment 18:12
opportunity with 20 to 30% monthly 18:16
returns that's pretty amazing so you 18:20
start with a small amount and surprising 18:25
L you see profits immediately on the 18:28
platform so now you're super excited and 18:33
you decide to invest more 18:37
money but when you try to withdraw your 18:40
earnings suddenly there's all these fees 18:44
that you need to pay first or the 18:48
platform is having some technical 18:51
problems and you can't actually withdraw 18:53
your money some reason here or there 18:56
that stops you from getting your money 19:00
back so then eventually you might find 19:02
out that the influencer has been 19:05
arrested their offices have been shut 19:08
down and thousands of people have lost 19:11
their money this story might sound 19:15
familiar because something very similar 19:17
happened here in Vietnam recently where 19:21
a social media personality I'm not going 19:24
going to say his name was arrested for 19:28
running one of the largest investment 19:31
scams in Vietnam's history so the 19:34
authorities seized which means took 19:39
billions of dong in assets and thousands 19:42
of people lost their savings so of 19:47
course be super careful with any 19:50
investment promising guaranteed High 19:53
returns with no risk 19:56
especially if it's being promoted by 19:59
influencers showing off you know luxury 20:02
cars and their lavish Lifestyles all 20:06
that stuff okay so we've talked about a 20:09
few different types of scams now let's 20:12
talk about the psychology behind scams 20:15
the question that many people ask is why 20:19
do even smart people fall for these 20:23
scams I think it's important to 20:27
understand this because sometimes people 20:30
can feel stupid when they get scammed 20:32
but really scammers are just exploiting 20:36
basic human 20:40
psychology like scammers know exactly 20:42
which emotional triggers to use against 20:45
you they use fear like when they pretend 20:48
to be the police saying you're involved 20:52
in a crime they use greed promise 20:55
missing huge Returns on investments or 20:58
things like lottery winnings and greed 21:01
is also how I got scammed for the first 21:04
time because I wanted two of my item and 21:07
that's what got me 21:11
scammed they can also use love and 21:13
connection like in Romance scams and 21:16
they always create a sense of urgency 21:20
like you have to act now or you'll miss 21:23
out or you have to decide quickly or 21:26
something bad will happen and when we're 21:31
emotional we don't think as clearly as 21:34
we would normally our rational brain 21:38
gets overpowered by our emotions so 21:41
along with using our emotions against us 21:45
scammers also use social engineering 21:49
techniques they might pretend to be an 21:52
authority figure like uh the police or 21:55
in the government they create fake 21:59
personas that seem 22:02
trustworthy they use like complicated 22:04
words to confuse you and they often know 22:07
just enough personal information about 22:11
you maybe they got your address and your 22:14
name from a a data breach or from social 22:17
media and that helps them to seem 22:21
legitimate okay so now that we know some 22:25
different types of scams and the tricks 22:28
that scammers use to scam people what 22:32
are some red flags to watch out for 22:36
across different types of scams here are 22:39
the main 22:43
ones number one is 22:44
urgency if someone is pressuring you to 22:47
act immediately that's a huge red flag 22:50
number two they request you to use 22:55
unusual payment methods so if someone 22:58
asks you to pay through gift cards or 23:02
cryptocurrency or some type of money 23:06
transfer be 23:09
careful number three they ask for your 23:11
personal 23:15
information legitimate companies won't 23:16
ask you for passwords or OTP codes or 23:19
complete ID details over the phone or 23:23
email and of course whatever you do do 23:27
not give your OTP no matter what just do 23:31
not do it number four poor grammar or 23:35
spelling so if the scam is in English 23:41
they say that they could use poor 23:45
grammar or spelling uh because maybe the 23:47
scammer's first language isn't 23:51
English but another reason they might 23:53
use poor grammar or spelling in English 23:57
or 24:00
Vietnamese is to filter out the people 24:01
who are attentive to detail for example 24:05
if someone responds to an email that has 24:09
the spelling mistakes and grammar 24:13
mistakes then it shows that that person 24:16
isn't super attentive to 24:20
details and therefore they are an easier 24:22
Target for the scammer that saves the 24:25
scamers time because they don't want to 24:29
waste time to try to scam people who are 24:31
harder to scam okay red flag number five 24:35
is when an offer seems too good to be 24:39
true so whether it's an investment a 24:43
product a job if the offer seems 24:46
unrealistic then it probably is and 24:50
number six is emotional manipulation 24:54
so if you feel like unusually scared or 24:58
excited or emotionally pressured then 25:03
just step back and think critically 25:06
really try to be careful okay so those 25:10
were a few red flags to look out for 25:14
make sure if any of those pop up then be 25:17
very 25:20
careful now let's go over some key 25:21
vocabulary words that we used just now 25:24
now when talking about scams okay the 25:28
first word of course is 25:32
scam 25:34
scam I think you already know what it 25:36
means another example is he fell for an 25:39
online scam and lost money so a scam can 25:43
be a noun like that's a scam or it can 25:48
be a verb like he scammed me the next 25:52
word is imperson 25:56
ation 25:59
impersonation impersonation is a noun 26:01
meaning to pretend to be someone 26:04
else the verb form is 26:08
impersonate 26:11
impersonate so for example we could say 26:13
the scammer was impersonating a bank 26:17
employee all right the next word is 26:20
OTP which means one-time password 26:24
OTP now an OTP is a security code that 26:30
is valid for only one 26:35
login for example never share your OTP 26:38
with anyone the next word is 26:43
legitimate 26:47
legitimate this is an adjective which 26:49
describes something that is real legal 26:52
or Genuine so not fake for example 26:56
legitimate companies won't ask for your 27:01
password over the phone the next word is 27:04
urgency urgency so urgency is when 27:08
something requires immediate 27:13
action uh urgency is a noun and Urgent 27:16
is the adjective for example the scammer 27:20
created urgency by saying the offer 27:25
would expire in 1 hour the next word is 27:28
spoof spoof so spoof this is a verb when 27:33
scammers disguise their phone number or 27:39
email to make it look like it's coming 27:42
from somewhere else like a trusted 27:46
source for 27:49
example they spoofed the Bank's phone 27:51
number to make their call seem genuine 27:54
and genuine means the same as legitimate 27:58
the next word is red flag red 28:02
flag this is a noun and it's a warning 28:07
sign uh of danger or a problem for 28:10
example being asked to pay via gift card 28:15
is a major red flag the next one is 28:19
Ponzi 28:24
scheme Ponzi scheme 28:25
so a scheme is like a plan and Ponzi 28:28
you've probably already heard that in 28:32
Vietnamese so a Ponzi scheme is a type 28:34
of scam um where existing investors are 28:38
paid with the money from new investors 28:44
which makes them think that they're 28:48
getting legitimate Returns on their 28:50
Investments for example the investment 28:54
turned out to be a Ponzi scheme that 28:58
collapsed when they couldn't find new 29:01
investors all right the next word is 29:04
naive 29:09
naive naive is an adjective which 29:11
describes a lack of experience or wisdom 29:15
or judgment like being too trusting for 29:19
example I was naive to believe I could 29:23
get rich quickly without any risk okay 29:27
the next word is 29:31
authenticate 29:34
authenticate so authenticate is the verb 29:36
authentication is the 29:41
noun and this means to prove or verify 29:43
the identity of a person or thing for 29:48
example two Factor authentication helps 29:52
protect your account 29:56
the next word is 29:58
fraudulent fraudulent so fraudulent is 30:01
uh an adjective the noun is 30:05
fraud and this means to be obtained done 30:08
by or involving deception meaning 30:13
tricking you especially to get your 30:18
money for example the website was 30:21
fraudulent and designed to steal credit 30:25
card information all right guys so if 30:28
you want to keep practicing your 30:31
listening skills and learning new words 30:33
and hear about the time I got scammed at 30:36
my first job then check out this video 30:39

of scam in Vietnam right now what's up

highlevel vocabulary words from this
podcast that will help you to take your
English to the next
level but first let me tell you a quick
story about the first time in my life
that I got scammed so the first time I
got scammed was in a game called
RuneScape now in this game I had spent
weeks saving up to buy this really cool
item that I was pretty proud of so I was
wearing the item and walking around when
this player came up to me and told me he
knew a secret to duplicate the
item duplicate means to make a copy of
it so to make two of them so instead of
one item I would have
two and he said all I needed to do was
drop my armor on the ground and then
press alt f4 on my keyboard and then I
would magically have two of them because
of a bug in the
game so being around 10 years old and
extremely naive I thought wow okay
sounds good let's do
it so I dropped the item on the ground
and pressed alt f4 now what I didn't
know was that alt f4 is the keyboard
shortcut to close your program
immediately so when I pressed it my game
closed and by the time I logged back in
the other player had picked up my item
and disappeared
at the time I was really devastated
because I had spent a lot of time to get
that item and then it was gone just like
that and that was the first time in my
life that I got scammed and I still
remember it till this
day now it's kind of funny when I look
back on it but at that time of course I
was pretty heartbroken about it
however I did learn a valuable lesson
that is if something sounds too good to
be true then it probably
is ever since then I've been really
careful about scams so luckily it was
just an item in a video game and not
real money so I told you this story just
to show that scams are everywhere and
anybody can get scammed now this leads
to the main content of this podcast so
in this podcast we're going to cover
four main things first we'll talk about
how scams have evolved over
time second we'll look at some of the
most common Mo modern scams in Vietnam
with some stories about each one
including a very famous scam in Vietnam
that was uncovered just a few months
ago third uh we'll talk about the
psychology behind scams like why even
smart people fall for them and finally

out for and tips to protect yourself
from scams but before we start if you

much all right let's get started first
with the evolution of scams as you
probably know scams aren't really new
they've been around basically forever in
the old days you had these guys called
snake oil salesmen who would travel from
town to town selling fake medicine that
they claimed could cure anything from
baldness to cancer you name it and these
people would set up in a market or Town
Square and make these crazy claims about
their products like oh it can cure this
or it can help you do that so of course
people would buy their products and it
wouldn't have those effects but by the
time they realized that those snake oil
sales men were already in another
town so that is an old type of scam but
as technology has grown scams of course
have evolved too they've gone from male
scams to phone scams to email scams and
now we have social media and messaging
app
scams the platforms change but the basic
techniques stay pretty much the same
what's different now is the
scale in the past a
scammer might have been able to trick a
few dozen people in their
lifetime but now they can reach millions
of potential victims with modern
technology like what we've seen with a
few big Ponzi schemes and you know
schemes on messaging apps zow WhatsApp
all those things so one thing that many
people wonder is why do scams continue
to persist and evolve despite increased
awareness of them well it's because they
work even if only 1% of people fall for
a scam if you send it to a million
people that's still
10,000 victims and that's a lot of money
and scammers are always adapting and
changing their methods as soon as people
catch on to one type of scam the
scammers modify it or create a new one
so now speaking of new scams let's move
on to some common modern scams in
Vietnam for each of these I'll tell you
a story about each one to help you
understand how they
work first let's talk about one of the
most dangerous scams in Vietnam right
now which is the police impersonation
scam this scam is something that I've
heard about a lot like I've seen the
warnings um posted in the elevator and
I've even gotten texts to my phone of
people claiming to be the police
so here's how it typically works first
you receive a call or a text from
someone claiming to be a police officer
or like a government
official they might even spoof their
caller ID to make it look like they're
calling you from an official
number they tell you that you're
involved in some kind of legal trouble
like maybe they say your dcard was found
at a crime scene or that you're
suspected of money laundering or tax
evasion and the scammer will sound very
official and they might even know some
basic information about you like your
full name and your address then they'll
create a sense of fear and panic saying
that you could be arrested and unless
you cooperate with their
investigation sometimes uh they'll
transfer you to other officers to make
it seem more legitimate but eventually
they'll ask you to transfer money to a
like secure government account or
something for safekeeping during the
investigation or to prove your money
isn't from illegal activities
once you transfer the money of course
it's gone and you'll never hear from
these police officers
again so remember of course real police
officers in Vietnam will never call you
and ask you for money transfers so
remember if you get a call or a text
like this just hang up the call or
ignore the text and you could report it
to the police another very common scam
in Vietnam is the OTP which means
one-time password scam this scam is
super important to know about because it
can happen to anyone with a bank account
or ewallet so here's how it works first
you get a call or a message from someone
claiming to be from your bank or Momo
zope or any other Financial
Service they might say they're updating
their system checking for suspicious
activity or maybe that you've won a
prize then they'll ask you to share the
OTP code that was just sent to your
phone what's actually happening is that
the scammer is trying to log into your
account on their device and and this
triggers the real service to send you an
OTP if you give them that code they'll
have full access to your account and
they can transfer all the money out or
they can make payments with your account
whatever so whatever you do do not share
uh your OTP with anyone no matter who
they claim to be because no legit bank
or ewallet service or company will ever
ask you for your OTP over the phone or
in a message all right uh next scam now
let's talk about Marketplace scams and
these are very common in
Vietnam here's how it would happen so
let's say you're browsing chat or
Facebook Marketplace and you see an
incred rible deal maybe it's the new
iPhone for 50% off or a luxury bag that
usually costs 20 million Dong but now
it's listed for Just 2 million sounds
like a great deal so you message the
seller but the seller has a story maybe
they got that item as a gift and they
don't need it or maybe they're moving
abroad and they need to sell it
quickly so when you talk to them they're
super friendly and they're helpful but
there's always a catch like they can't
meet in person or the item needs to be
shipped from far away so they ask for
payment upfront meaning payment before
you get the item maybe that could be
through a bank transfer or an ewallet
once they receive your money they
disappear or they send you a fake or
just a completely different
item now this happens a lot especially
with high value items like phones and
motorbikes so remember if a deal seems
too good to be true then it probably is
all right so another type of scam that
is common not just in Vietnam but around
the world is called the romance scam
these scams usually Target women and it
might be done differently depending on
the country but in Western countries
like the USA and Canada scammers often
pose as people in the military who are
deployed overseas here's a typical story
of how this scam would happen there was
a woman let's call her Sarah who met a
guy online who claimed to be an American
Soldier stationed in
Afghanistan his profile showed a
handsome man in military uniform and he
was very charming and attentive when he
spoke to her he would message her good
morning and good night every day despite
the time difference CU he such a good
guy and he would call her when he could
and he just really seemed invested in
learning about her
life so after about 2 months of talking
he told Sarah he was having trouble
accessing his military pay and needed a
short-term loan of around
$22,000 which he promised to pay back
once he returned to the
us because she trusted him and thought
they had a real connection she sent him
the
money then he needed more money for
another emergency like maybe medical
bills or to help a fellow Soldier
eventually she'd realized she'd been
scammed when he disappeared after
getting about
$88,000 from
her you know sometimes these scams are
even way more money they could be 50,000
100,000 I've seen cases where it's even
a few hundred
th000 the thing is for many of these
people the worst part wasn't even losing
the money but it was finding out that
the relationship that they thought was
real was actually all a lie so this type
of scam happens to people all over the
world many of them uh are women but they
can happen uh to men too and throughout
these scams the pattern is the same uh
the person builds trust they create an
emergency and then they ask for money
and after that they disappear okay so
the last type of scam we'll talk about
is the investment scam these scams can
make a ton of money and they are one of
the most popular types of scam in
Vietnam right now so here's how the
typical investment scam would happen so
imagine you're scrolling through social
media and you see a popular influencer
showing off luxury cars and Villas
claiming they made their Fortune through
Forex Trading or cryptocurrency or
something like that so you look into it
a bit and you find out they have offices
across Vietnam professional look
websites and they even use real trading
platforms everything seems
legit then they offer you an investment
opportunity with 20 to 30% monthly
returns that's pretty amazing so you
start with a small amount and surprising
L you see profits immediately on the
platform so now you're super excited and
you decide to invest more
money but when you try to withdraw your
earnings suddenly there's all these fees
that you need to pay first or the
platform is having some technical
problems and you can't actually withdraw
your money some reason here or there
that stops you from getting your money
back so then eventually you might find
out that the influencer has been
arrested their offices have been shut
down and thousands of people have lost
their money this story might sound
familiar because something very similar
happened here in Vietnam recently where
a social media personality I'm not going
going to say his name was arrested for
running one of the largest investment
scams in Vietnam's history so the
authorities seized which means took
billions of dong in assets and thousands
of people lost their savings so of
course be super careful with any
investment promising guaranteed High
returns with no risk
especially if it's being promoted by
influencers showing off you know luxury
cars and their lavish Lifestyles all
that stuff okay so we've talked about a
few different types of scams now let's
talk about the psychology behind scams
the question that many people ask is why
do even smart people fall for these
scams I think it's important to
understand this because sometimes people
can feel stupid when they get scammed
but really scammers are just exploiting
basic human
psychology like scammers know exactly
which emotional triggers to use against
you they use fear like when they pretend
to be the police saying you're involved
in a crime they use greed promise
missing huge Returns on investments or
things like lottery winnings and greed
is also how I got scammed for the first
time because I wanted two of my item and
that's what got me
scammed they can also use love and
connection like in Romance scams and
they always create a sense of urgency
like you have to act now or you'll miss
out or you have to decide quickly or
something bad will happen and when we're
emotional we don't think as clearly as
we would normally our rational brain
gets overpowered by our emotions so
along with using our emotions against us
scammers also use social engineering
techniques they might pretend to be an
authority figure like uh the police or
in the government they create fake
personas that seem
trustworthy they use like complicated
words to confuse you and they often know
just enough personal information about
you maybe they got your address and your
name from a a data breach or from social
media and that helps them to seem
legitimate okay so now that we know some
different types of scams and the tricks
that scammers use to scam people what
are some red flags to watch out for
across different types of scams here are
the main
ones number one is
urgency if someone is pressuring you to
act immediately that's a huge red flag
number two they request you to use
unusual payment methods so if someone
asks you to pay through gift cards or
cryptocurrency or some type of money
transfer be
careful number three they ask for your
personal
information legitimate companies won't
ask you for passwords or OTP codes or
complete ID details over the phone or
email and of course whatever you do do
not give your OTP no matter what just do
not do it number four poor grammar or
spelling so if the scam is in English
they say that they could use poor
grammar or spelling uh because maybe the
scammer's first language isn't
English but another reason they might
use poor grammar or spelling in English
or
Vietnamese is to filter out the people
who are attentive to detail for example
if someone responds to an email that has
the spelling mistakes and grammar
mistakes then it shows that that person
isn't super attentive to
details and therefore they are an easier
Target for the scammer that saves the
scamers time because they don't want to
waste time to try to scam people who are
harder to scam okay red flag number five
is when an offer seems too good to be
true so whether it's an investment a
product a job if the offer seems
unrealistic then it probably is and
number six is emotional manipulation
so if you feel like unusually scared or
excited or emotionally pressured then
just step back and think critically
really try to be careful okay so those
were a few red flags to look out for
make sure if any of those pop up then be
very
careful now let's go over some key
vocabulary words that we used just now
now when talking about scams okay the
first word of course is
scam
scam I think you already know what it
means another example is he fell for an
online scam and lost money so a scam can
be a noun like that's a scam or it can
be a verb like he scammed me the next
word is imperson
ation
impersonation impersonation is a noun
meaning to pretend to be someone
else the verb form is
impersonate
impersonate so for example we could say
the scammer was impersonating a bank
employee all right the next word is
OTP which means one-time password
OTP now an OTP is a security code that
is valid for only one
login for example never share your OTP
with anyone the next word is
legitimate
legitimate this is an adjective which
describes something that is real legal
or Genuine so not fake for example
legitimate companies won't ask for your
password over the phone the next word is
urgency urgency so urgency is when
something requires immediate
action uh urgency is a noun and Urgent
is the adjective for example the scammer
created urgency by saying the offer
would expire in 1 hour the next word is
spoof spoof so spoof this is a verb when
scammers disguise their phone number or
email to make it look like it's coming
from somewhere else like a trusted
source for
example they spoofed the Bank's phone
number to make their call seem genuine
and genuine means the same as legitimate
the next word is red flag red
flag this is a noun and it's a warning
sign uh of danger or a problem for
example being asked to pay via gift card
is a major red flag the next one is
Ponzi
scheme Ponzi scheme
so a scheme is like a plan and Ponzi
you've probably already heard that in
Vietnamese so a Ponzi scheme is a type
of scam um where existing investors are
paid with the money from new investors
which makes them think that they're
getting legitimate Returns on their
Investments for example the investment
turned out to be a Ponzi scheme that
collapsed when they couldn't find new
investors all right the next word is
naive
naive naive is an adjective which
describes a lack of experience or wisdom
or judgment like being too trusting for
example I was naive to believe I could
get rich quickly without any risk okay
the next word is
authenticate
authenticate so authenticate is the verb
authentication is the
noun and this means to prove or verify
the identity of a person or thing for
example two Factor authentication helps
protect your account
the next word is
fraudulent fraudulent so fraudulent is
uh an adjective the noun is
fraud and this means to be obtained done
by or involving deception meaning
tricking you especially to get your
money for example the website was
fraudulent and designed to steal credit
card information all right guys so if
you want to keep practicing your
listening skills and learning new words
and hear about the time I got scammed at
my first job then check out this video
right here I hope you enjoyed the
podcast and I'll see you in the next one
see you later
