and I think having one 00:00
exam that 00:03
determines what university you'll go to 00:05
that sounds extremely stressful it 00:08
sounds like a lot of pressure what's up 00:12
everyone I'm Carter from what's up 00:14
English and if you're a student in grade 00:17
school or 00:21
University or if you're a parent with 00:23
kids in school or even if you are not in 00:27
school and you just want to learn how to 00:31
talk about school then this podcast will 00:35
be super useful for you because we are 00:39
going to talk about school and learn a 00:43
ton of useful words and phrases that you 00:48
can use to talk about school so first I 00:52
will start this podcast with my own 00:56
personal 00:59
experience with 01:00
School uh and then we will talk about 01:02
the school system in general in Vietnam 01:06
how it works after that we will talk 01:11
about the differences between School in 01:14
Canada and school in Vietnam like what 01:17
are the differences in the school system 01:21
uh what are the cultural differences 01:25
like for example 01:28
do we have strict testing in 01:30
Canada what are the parents attitudes 01:34
towards their children studying in 01:37
Canada are they as strict as Vietnamese 01:40
parents and do we wear uniforms 01:44
different things like that and finally 01:47
at the end of the podcast I will tell 01:50
you one of the most important Concepts 01:53
to learning anything and this is of 01:58
course not something I made up but 02:01
something that I read in books that were 02:04
written about learning and this is very 02:07
interesting very useful so make sure you 02:10
watch till the end to see that but 02:14
before we get started guys I know it has 02:16
been a while since I've last uploaded 02:20
it's been a few weeks and I'm sorry for 02:23
that but the reason is is because my 02:27
team and I have been working on a really 02:32
really good pronunciation course for 02:36
American 02:40
English because with what's up 02:42
English I'm trying to turn this into a 02:45
real business that can 02:49
provide basically a solution for you 02:52
guys to learn English from 02:56
a beginner level all the way to 03:00
intermediate conversational level but I 03:03
want to provide you a 03:08
stepbystep framework so you can you know 03:10
study this master this and then learn 03:14
that and then learn that and each one 03:17
Builds on the last one right so the 03:21
first step in this Stu stud system that 03:26
I'm creating is a pronunciation course 03:31
that covers all the sounds in American 03:35
English like for example we say water we 03:38
don't say water right and that D in 03:43
water D water is called a flap te and 03:48
you won't see that in the IPA but in 03:54
this course we cover all of those sounds 03:58
but more importantly we will give you 04:02
shadowing practice and repetition 04:05
practice cuz learning it is just one 04:08
step but to actually have clear 04:11
pronunciation when you speak you need to 04:14
make it automatic with your tongue and 04:18
your lips you need to build that muscle 04:20
memory in your mouth to make these 04:24
sounds without thinking to too much 04:27
about it and I believe one of the best 04:30
ways to do that is through repetition 04:33
shadowing and making the noise correctly 04:37
again and again and again until it 04:41
becomes 04:44
automatic and so in this course we won't 04:46
only teach you the sounds but we'll give 04:49
you shadowing practice for example for 04:52
each sound you will learn three useful 04:56
sentences that you can practice you will 05:00
have a clear study plan so you will know 05:03
exactly what to 05:06
learn sorry and uh yeah I think it's 05:08
going to be seriously one of the best 05:12
pronunciation courses for American 05:15
English for Vietnamese people if not the 05:17
best so this takes a while to make um it 05:21
will be at least I think a month or two 05:26
before it comes out but if you are 05:30
interested in purchasing this course 05:33
then you can click the link in the 05:36
description below and if you put in your 05:39
email to show you're interested in this 05:42
course and sign up for the early bird 05:46
list you will get a 20% off voucher that 05:48
only people who sign up uh will get so 05:54
all you need to to do is click the link 05:58
in the description below this video it 06:01
will bring you to a web page you just 06:04
put in your email and then you will 06:07
receive a voucher for 20% off this 06:10
course when it comes out and of course I 06:13
will let you know when it comes out and 06:16
aside from that we also have the 1,000 06:19
most common words uh you can still buy 06:23
that for 79k 06:27
yeah anyway let's get started with the 06:29
podcast so this is about school so like 06:33
I said I'll begin with a personal 06:38
story I'm going to be completely honest 06:42
with you guys about school I was not the 06:46
best student all the way from I'd say 06:50
grade s to grade 12 I was not the best 06:54
student simply because I didn't really 06:58
have an interest in any of the subjects 07:03
we were studying in school and I'm the 07:07
type of person where if I don't feel 07:11
interested then it feels impossible for 07:15
me to put effort into it it's like my 07:19
brain just cannot do it maybe a lot of 07:23
you can relate to that maybe you feel 07:26
the same way if there's a course that 07:29
you're not interested in it's just so 07:32
hard for you to put your focus into that 07:35
right so when I was in school I would 07:39
normally just put the minimal amount of 07:42
effort into the class so I could pass 07:46
because of course I didn't want to fail 07:51
the class and then go to summer school 07:53
or have to repeat the class in the next 07:56
sem Master but in terms of trying to get 07:59
really good grades in school so I could 08:03
go to a good University and then I could 08:06
get a good job to be completely honest I 08:08
wasn't thinking about that too much I 08:12
just wanted to finish the school day so 08:15
I could go and hang out with my friends 08:18
or go home and play video games I think 08:21
it was a lack of maturity but ALS so it 08:25
was you know I wasn't the the happiest 08:30
kid you know I wasn't all excited to 08:34
learn and I was mostly just kind of kind 08:37
of flat you know and you might think 08:40
it's weird that I'm telling you this 08:43
because now I'm on YouTube I'm teaching 08:46
English but it's the truth and I'm going 08:50
to tell you guys the truth right but the 08:54
important thing is is that people change 08:58
over time and as we grow up we mature 09:04
our perspectives change and our values 09:08
change what is important to us changes 09:12
for example before I would just do the 09:16
bare minimum to pass the class but now 09:19
I'm studying online in a university and 09:23
I'm getting a very decent GPA because my 09:27
mindset is just completely different now 09:32
I see the value in it and now I have 09:35
pride you know I want to get good grades 09:40
just because even I know in the 09:44
future if I'm employed at a company they 09:47
probably won't really care about my 09:52
grades right they just want to see the 09:55
paper you have have the degree the 09:58
grades don't matter that much really but 10:01
still for my personal reasons I want to 10:04
get good grades because I'm paying for 10:08
this and I I want to learn what they're 10:11
teaching me and so growing up 10:14
maturity mental health whether you're 10:18
happy or or depressed they play a huge 10:21
role in how well you do in school I 10:26
really believe that probably even more 10:30
than like your IQ or your intelligence 10:33
level right because someone who's really 10:38
really smart if they are kind of lazy or 10:41
if they feel depressed and they don't 10:46
want to put the work in or the effort in 10:48
then they're probably not going to get 10:52
very good grades at least when they 10:54
reach the higher levels like the 10:56
University 10:58
meanwhile some people who are not very 11:00
smart and they have to work harder than 11:02
the smart kids they can still get good 11:06
grades because they're putting the 11:09
effort in yeah I think our our mental 11:10
state is very 11:13
important and anyway that was my 11:15
experience in school so now let's talk 11:19
about uh the school system in general in 11:23
Vietnam so the school system begins with 11:27
preschool and this is when the kids are 11:33
around 3 or four years old there's also 11:36
the word Nursery which is more common in 11:39
England but because I'm Canadian we use 11:44
North American English so the words I 11:48
use will be the common words in North 11:51
America if you know some other words 11:55
then that that's possible they are 11:58
common in England but in this podcast 12:00
we'll use words common in North 12:04
America so yeah kids begin with 12:07
preschool when they're three or four 12:11
years old and the purpose of preschool 12:13
is not really to learn but to help the 12:17
kids build their social skills um 12:20
emotional skills and just basic 12:24
cognitive skills to function as a human 12:27
being right and then in Vietnam when 12:31
they're around 4 to 6 years old so from 12:35
4 to 6 years old they go to kindergarten 12:39
in kindergarten there's a more 12:43
structured approach a more academic 12:46
approach to prepare the kids for going 12:50
into grade school to prepare them for 12:53
grade one now preschool and kindergarten 12:57
are not compulsory in Vietnam you don't 13:02
have to send them there but from what 13:06
I've 13:09
heard pretty much all kids go to 13:10
preschool and kindergarten because their 13:15
parents are working and it's also a way 13:17
for them to be taken care of right all 13:20
right so after they finish kindergarten 13:23
the kids go into Elementary school also 13:26
known as primary school and in Vietnam 13:30
Primary School are grades one to five 13:34
yes one to five I had to think a bit 13:40
because in Canada it's 1 to six so there 13:43
are some small small differences after 13:46
they finish Elementary School they go 13:49
into Middle School also known as junior 13:52
high but again in Canada we usually say 13:56
middle 14:01
school so Middle School in Vietnam are 14:02
grades six 7 8 and 14:06
nine and middle school is like a 14:11
transitional period to prepare students 14:15
for the more 14:19
independent subject focused style of 14:22
high school in Primary School 14:26
[Music] 14:29
it's more guided and nurturing in the 14:30
way they learn but High School is much 14:33
more independent and there's a lot more 14:37
pressure and you're more focused on 14:40
particular subjects so middle school is 14:43
to help them transition into high school 14:47
okay after they finish Middle School 14:51
they go into high school so high school 14:54
is grades 10 11 11 and 14:57
12 and from what I've heard from the 15:00
people I've talked to is there's a ton 15:04
of pressure in high school because you 15:08
need to get good grades and you need to 15:12
do well on the 15:16
national National exam I can't remember 15:19
the name yeah on the national exam or 15:22
the na or the university entrance exam 15:25
in order to get into a good University 15:29
and it's very competitive so in high 15:33
school a lot of students are stressed 15:37
out they're under a lot of 15:39
pressure um because they want to get 15:42
accepted into a good University all 15:45
right before I talk about the 15:49
differences between Canada and 15:51
Vietnam I want to go over some job 15:56
titles that might be useful for you okay 15:59
so we have the principal of the school 16:02
then there's the vice principal of 16:07
course we have teachers and one very 16:10
prominent role in schools here in 16:14
Vietnam is being The Home Room teacher 16:16
so Home Room teacher um there are 16:20
academic officers 16:24
Librarians uh in Vietnam they have 16:27
security guards so there are a lot of 16:29
different staff members that make up the 16:32
overall staff of the school okay so now 16:37
let's move on to the differences between 16:41
schools in Vietnam and schools in 16:44
Canada first let's talk about classrooms 16:48
so in Vietnam especially the urban areas 16:52
like inside the city in public schools 16:56
classes are usually between 40 to 50 17:01
students while in Canada they are around 17:06
20 to 30 students because of course in 17:10
Canada we have way fewer people there is 17:14
about 37 million people in Canada and a 17:18
much larger country while Vietnam is 17:23
much smaller with a 100 million people 17:26
so class sizes are going to be bigger 17:29
for sure in Vietnam classes normally 17:32
have the L Chong right L Chong uh in 17:36
Canada we also had these they were 17:40
called a class monitor or a class 17:43
leader but to be honest the role that 17:47
they had was not as serious as the class 17:51
monitors here in Viet Vietnam like in 17:56
Vietnam the class 18:00
leader has a lot of rules to do and they 18:02
are expected to be a role 18:06
model but when I was in school it wasn't 18:09
a big thing to be honest I think in high 18:12
school we didn't even have any class 18:15
leaders in any of the 18:17
classes if there was a class monitor 18:19
their job was basically just to tell on 18:23
the kids if they did something bad they 18:25
would just look for you to do you know 18:28
something like oh he's cheating or you 18:31
know he just threw this thing at this 18:33
student and that's what they would do 18:35
another thing about classrooms in 18:38
Vietnam versus Canada I read online that 18:40
in 18:44
Vietnam the the way they teach the focus 18:45
is more on the teacher while in Canada 18:50
the focus is more on the students and 18:54
they want more part 18:57
participation and interaction but I'm 18:59
not really sure how true this is because 19:02
I think it really depends on the teacher 19:06
I've seen classes here in Vietnam where 19:10
they had plenty of interaction and 19:12
participation with the students and I've 19:15
seen classes where it's just the teacher 19:18
talking and students writing but I've 19:21
also seen both ways in Canada as well 19:24
you know when I was in school some 19:27
teachers would just talk and you take 19:30
notes and then some other classes were 19:32
much more fun you could do other things 19:35
so I think uh it's hard to generalize 19:38
Vietnam is more like this than Canada 19:41
because it really depends on the 19:44
teachers but maybe in general Vietnam is 19:46
a bit more teacher focused that could be 19:50
possible all right so the next thing 19:53
we'll talk about is exam pressure on 19:55
students the pressure to do well in 19:59
exams so for sure the education system 20:03
in Vietnam puts a lot more emphasis and 20:07
importance on exams than Canada and the 20:13
West in general like in Vietnam the mark 20:18
you get on your exam plays a big role 20:21
into what university you'll get into but 20:26
in Canada universities they look at your 20:30
overall grades in grades 11 and 12 the 20:34
last two years of high school and 20:39
there's no one exam in 20:43
Canada that will get you into 20:46
universities they look at your overall 20:49
grades and your grades are based on 20:52
projects assignments participation 20:55
and exams so in 20:59
Canada exams play a role in your mark 21:02
for example they might it might be worth 21:06
like 30% of your overall Mark for that 21:08
class but there's not one big exam that 21:12
you have to do well in and I think 21:15
having one 21:18
exam that 21:20
determines what university you'll go to 21:22
that sounds extremely stressful it 21:26
sounds like a lot of pressure and to be 21:29
honest I'm quite glad that we didn't 21:33
have to do that because it does sound 21:35
quite stressful all right so overall 21:38
there's less exam pressure in Canada in 21:41
the west than in Vietnam okay so let's 21:45
talk a little bit about parental 21:48
expectations meaning the expectations of 21:51
the parents on their children on the 21:54
students 21:57
so are Canadian parents as strict as 21:59
Vietnamese parents as a whole I would 22:03
say 22:06
no um in fact when I was growing up in 22:08
Canada we would often make jokes about 22:12
how strict Asian parents are compared to 22:16
everyone else and how much they value 22:20
education so when I was in school there 22:24
were a lot lot of kids whose parents 22:27
were immigrants because it's Canada 22:31
there are people from everywhere like in 22:34
my class they would have kids from China 22:37
kids from Japan kids from India from 22:40
Pakistan from Iran from so many 22:43
different countries but they were 22:46
usually born in Canada but their parents 22:48
came from their respective countries and 22:51
I remember these parents would often put 22:56
their kids in 22:58
extracurricular tutoring things like 23:00
Kuman for example many students in my 23:03
classes went to Kuman which taught them 23:07
math and it helped a lot they got by far 23:11
the best grades in the class uh for 23:15
math so in Canada it it varies some 23:18
parents are strict some parents are not 23:23
very strict in general I think think 23:26
they are less strict than parents in 23:28
Vietnam these days but also I know in 23:31
Vietnam it varies as well some parents 23:34
are very strict some parents not so much 23:37
at the end of the day we're all kind of 23:40
the same you know we're we're all just 23:43
humans trying to do our best um there 23:46
are some small differences but yeah all 23:49
right so the last thing is uniforms in 23:52
Vietnam uniforms are mandatory at most 23:55
schools both Public 23:59
Schools both public schools and private 24:01
schools now these uniforms are usually 24:05
uh a light colored shirt with dark pants 24:09
in Canada uniforms are not nearly as 24:13
common they only really wear uniforms at 24:17
private schools or religious schools but 24:21
when I went to a public school I never 24:25
had to wear any uniform or anything like 24:27
that so in Canada we don't have uniforms 24:30
but we do have uh like a dress code for 24:34
example you can't have a shirt with bad 24:37
words on it or you can't wear a hat with 24:40
a particular plant on it I think you 24:44
probably know the leaf I'm talking about 24:46
if you wore those they would maybe send 24:50
you home to change or they would just 24:52
make you take it off but that's about it 24:55
okay guys the last part of this podcast 24:59
I want to tell you the most important 25:02
concept for learning so this is from a 25:05
book called make it 25:08
stick and it has a few interesting 25:10
Concepts on how to learn but one really 25:14
important one was the more difficult 25:18
something is the better your brain 25:23
learns it for example example if you're 25:26
learning English and you learn a new 25:29
word some people think the best way to 25:32
learn a word is by writing it down 50 25:36
times it's like if I write it down 50 25:39
times or a 100 times then there's no way 25:42
I will forget it right maybe this has 25:45
happened to you you still forgot the 25:48
word even after you wrote it so many 25:51
times and then you think oh I just can't 25:53
learn English or I just can't learn 25:56
languages but the reason why that's not 25:58
effective is because your brain is not 26:01
being challenged you're just writing the 26:04
word writing the word writing the word 26:06
whereas if you do something more 26:10
challenging with the word like using it 26:13
in a sentence using it properly in a 26:16
sentence then your brain has to work 26:19
harder thinking about the word and it 26:22
will form more connections to other 26:25
things so sometimes the easier way we do 26:29
that because uh you don't really have to 26:33
think to write it 50 times right but if 26:35
you study in a way where you have to 26:40
think more you have to retrieve it from 26:42
your brain and use it then that will 26:45
help you learn better and this isn't 26:49
just for language but it's for anything 26:51
learning anything that's why they also 26:55
say teaching is a great way to learn so 26:58
when you learn something if you teach 27:01
that concept to somebody else that's not 27:04
easy that's difficult and your brain has 27:07
to work quite hard to make these 27:10
connections and explain this concept in 27:12
a simple way but it will help you learn 27:16
things so anyway that's the concept in a 27:20
nutshell harder the harder you work the 27:24
the better you will remember something 27:28
so if you're taking if you're doing some 27:30
easy things to try to learn it might not 27:33
really be effective that's another 27:36
reason why reviewing notes is not really 27:38
effective because when you review your 27:42
notes it's easy you're just looking at 27:44
it again but when you do something 27:47
called active retrieval meaning you 27:49
think about everything that was in your 27:53
notes for example if if you took some 27:56
notes don't reread them but try to 27:58
rewrite all the notes you took in 28:02
different words try to remember all the 28:05
information and once you do that then 28:08
you can compare what you remembered and 28:11
what you didn't right so then you can 28:14
see oh I forgot to talk about this thing 28:18
this thing this thing and then try again 28:20
retrieve the information from your head 28:23
and write it in new words and that will 28:25
help you a lot more than just rereading 28:28
your notes all right so that'll be it 28:32
for this podcast guys remember make sure 28:34

Lyrics & Translation

[English]
and I think having one
exam that
determines what university you'll go to
that sounds extremely stressful it
sounds like a lot of pressure what's up
everyone I'm Carter from what's up
English and if you're a student in grade
school or
University or if you're a parent with
kids in school or even if you are not in
school and you just want to learn how to
talk about school then this podcast will
be super useful for you because we are
going to talk about school and learn a
ton of useful words and phrases that you
can use to talk about school so first I
will start this podcast with my own
personal
experience with
School uh and then we will talk about
the school system in general in Vietnam
how it works after that we will talk
about the differences between School in
Canada and school in Vietnam like what
are the differences in the school system
uh what are the cultural differences
like for example
do we have strict testing in
Canada what are the parents attitudes
towards their children studying in
Canada are they as strict as Vietnamese
parents and do we wear uniforms
different things like that and finally
at the end of the podcast I will tell
you one of the most important Concepts
to learning anything and this is of
course not something I made up but
something that I read in books that were
written about learning and this is very
interesting very useful so make sure you
watch till the end to see that but
before we get started guys I know it has
been a while since I've last uploaded
it's been a few weeks and I'm sorry for
that but the reason is is because my
team and I have been working on a really
really good pronunciation course for
American
English because with what's up
English I'm trying to turn this into a
real business that can
provide basically a solution for you
guys to learn English from
a beginner level all the way to
intermediate conversational level but I
want to provide you a
stepbystep framework so you can you know
study this master this and then learn
that and then learn that and each one
Builds on the last one right so the
first step in this Stu stud system that
I'm creating is a pronunciation course
that covers all the sounds in American
English like for example we say water we
don't say water right and that D in
water D water is called a flap te and
you won't see that in the IPA but in
this course we cover all of those sounds
but more importantly we will give you
shadowing practice and repetition
practice cuz learning it is just one
step but to actually have clear
pronunciation when you speak you need to
make it automatic with your tongue and
your lips you need to build that muscle
memory in your mouth to make these
sounds without thinking to too much
about it and I believe one of the best
ways to do that is through repetition
shadowing and making the noise correctly
again and again and again until it
becomes
automatic and so in this course we won't
only teach you the sounds but we'll give
you shadowing practice for example for
each sound you will learn three useful
sentences that you can practice you will
have a clear study plan so you will know
exactly what to
learn sorry and uh yeah I think it's
going to be seriously one of the best
pronunciation courses for American
English for Vietnamese people if not the
best so this takes a while to make um it
will be at least I think a month or two
before it comes out but if you are
interested in purchasing this course
then you can click the link in the
description below and if you put in your
email to show you're interested in this
course and sign up for the early bird
list you will get a 20% off voucher that
only people who sign up uh will get so
all you need to to do is click the link
in the description below this video it
will bring you to a web page you just
put in your email and then you will
receive a voucher for 20% off this
course when it comes out and of course I
will let you know when it comes out and
aside from that we also have the 1,000
most common words uh you can still buy
that for 79k
yeah anyway let's get started with the
podcast so this is about school so like
I said I'll begin with a personal
story I'm going to be completely honest
with you guys about school I was not the
best student all the way from I'd say
grade s to grade 12 I was not the best
student simply because I didn't really
have an interest in any of the subjects
we were studying in school and I'm the
type of person where if I don't feel
interested then it feels impossible for
me to put effort into it it's like my
brain just cannot do it maybe a lot of
you can relate to that maybe you feel
the same way if there's a course that
you're not interested in it's just so
hard for you to put your focus into that
right so when I was in school I would
normally just put the minimal amount of
effort into the class so I could pass
because of course I didn't want to fail
the class and then go to summer school
or have to repeat the class in the next
sem Master but in terms of trying to get
really good grades in school so I could
go to a good University and then I could
get a good job to be completely honest I
wasn't thinking about that too much I
just wanted to finish the school day so
I could go and hang out with my friends
or go home and play video games I think
it was a lack of maturity but ALS so it
was you know I wasn't the the happiest
kid you know I wasn't all excited to
learn and I was mostly just kind of kind
of flat you know and you might think
it's weird that I'm telling you this
because now I'm on YouTube I'm teaching
English but it's the truth and I'm going
to tell you guys the truth right but the
important thing is is that people change
over time and as we grow up we mature
our perspectives change and our values
change what is important to us changes
for example before I would just do the
bare minimum to pass the class but now
I'm studying online in a university and
I'm getting a very decent GPA because my
mindset is just completely different now
I see the value in it and now I have
pride you know I want to get good grades
just because even I know in the
future if I'm employed at a company they
probably won't really care about my
grades right they just want to see the
paper you have have the degree the
grades don't matter that much really but
still for my personal reasons I want to
get good grades because I'm paying for
this and I I want to learn what they're
teaching me and so growing up
maturity mental health whether you're
happy or or depressed they play a huge
role in how well you do in school I
really believe that probably even more
than like your IQ or your intelligence
level right because someone who's really
really smart if they are kind of lazy or
if they feel depressed and they don't
want to put the work in or the effort in
then they're probably not going to get
very good grades at least when they
reach the higher levels like the
University
meanwhile some people who are not very
smart and they have to work harder than
the smart kids they can still get good
grades because they're putting the
effort in yeah I think our our mental
state is very
important and anyway that was my
experience in school so now let's talk
about uh the school system in general in
Vietnam so the school system begins with
preschool and this is when the kids are
around 3 or four years old there's also
the word Nursery which is more common in
England but because I'm Canadian we use
North American English so the words I
use will be the common words in North
America if you know some other words
then that that's possible they are
common in England but in this podcast
we'll use words common in North
America so yeah kids begin with
preschool when they're three or four
years old and the purpose of preschool
is not really to learn but to help the
kids build their social skills um
emotional skills and just basic
cognitive skills to function as a human
being right and then in Vietnam when
they're around 4 to 6 years old so from
4 to 6 years old they go to kindergarten
in kindergarten there's a more
structured approach a more academic
approach to prepare the kids for going
into grade school to prepare them for
grade one now preschool and kindergarten
are not compulsory in Vietnam you don't
have to send them there but from what
I've
heard pretty much all kids go to
preschool and kindergarten because their
parents are working and it's also a way
for them to be taken care of right all
right so after they finish kindergarten
the kids go into Elementary school also
known as primary school and in Vietnam
Primary School are grades one to five
yes one to five I had to think a bit
because in Canada it's 1 to six so there
are some small small differences after
they finish Elementary School they go
into Middle School also known as junior
high but again in Canada we usually say
middle
school so Middle School in Vietnam are
grades six 7 8 and
nine and middle school is like a
transitional period to prepare students
for the more
independent subject focused style of
high school in Primary School
[Music]
it's more guided and nurturing in the
way they learn but High School is much
more independent and there's a lot more
pressure and you're more focused on
particular subjects so middle school is
to help them transition into high school
okay after they finish Middle School
they go into high school so high school
is grades 10 11 11 and
12 and from what I've heard from the
people I've talked to is there's a ton
of pressure in high school because you
need to get good grades and you need to
do well on the
national National exam I can't remember
the name yeah on the national exam or
the na or the university entrance exam
in order to get into a good University
and it's very competitive so in high
school a lot of students are stressed
out they're under a lot of
pressure um because they want to get
accepted into a good University all
right before I talk about the
differences between Canada and
Vietnam I want to go over some job
titles that might be useful for you okay
so we have the principal of the school
then there's the vice principal of
course we have teachers and one very
prominent role in schools here in
Vietnam is being The Home Room teacher
so Home Room teacher um there are
academic officers
Librarians uh in Vietnam they have
security guards so there are a lot of
different staff members that make up the
overall staff of the school okay so now
let's move on to the differences between
schools in Vietnam and schools in
Canada first let's talk about classrooms
so in Vietnam especially the urban areas
like inside the city in public schools
classes are usually between 40 to 50
students while in Canada they are around
20 to 30 students because of course in
Canada we have way fewer people there is
about 37 million people in Canada and a
much larger country while Vietnam is
much smaller with a 100 million people
so class sizes are going to be bigger
for sure in Vietnam classes normally
have the L Chong right L Chong uh in
Canada we also had these they were
called a class monitor or a class
leader but to be honest the role that
they had was not as serious as the class
monitors here in Viet Vietnam like in
Vietnam the class
leader has a lot of rules to do and they
are expected to be a role
model but when I was in school it wasn't
a big thing to be honest I think in high
school we didn't even have any class
leaders in any of the
classes if there was a class monitor
their job was basically just to tell on
the kids if they did something bad they
would just look for you to do you know
something like oh he's cheating or you
know he just threw this thing at this
student and that's what they would do
another thing about classrooms in
Vietnam versus Canada I read online that
in
Vietnam the the way they teach the focus
is more on the teacher while in Canada
the focus is more on the students and
they want more part
participation and interaction but I'm
not really sure how true this is because
I think it really depends on the teacher
I've seen classes here in Vietnam where
they had plenty of interaction and
participation with the students and I've
seen classes where it's just the teacher
talking and students writing but I've
also seen both ways in Canada as well
you know when I was in school some
teachers would just talk and you take
notes and then some other classes were
much more fun you could do other things
so I think uh it's hard to generalize
Vietnam is more like this than Canada
because it really depends on the
teachers but maybe in general Vietnam is
a bit more teacher focused that could be
possible all right so the next thing
we'll talk about is exam pressure on
students the pressure to do well in
exams so for sure the education system
in Vietnam puts a lot more emphasis and
importance on exams than Canada and the
West in general like in Vietnam the mark
you get on your exam plays a big role
into what university you'll get into but
in Canada universities they look at your
overall grades in grades 11 and 12 the
last two years of high school and
there's no one exam in
Canada that will get you into
universities they look at your overall
grades and your grades are based on
projects assignments participation
and exams so in
Canada exams play a role in your mark
for example they might it might be worth
like 30% of your overall Mark for that
class but there's not one big exam that
you have to do well in and I think
having one
exam that
determines what university you'll go to
that sounds extremely stressful it
sounds like a lot of pressure and to be
honest I'm quite glad that we didn't
have to do that because it does sound
quite stressful all right so overall
there's less exam pressure in Canada in
the west than in Vietnam okay so let's
talk a little bit about parental
expectations meaning the expectations of
the parents on their children on the
students
so are Canadian parents as strict as
Vietnamese parents as a whole I would
say
no um in fact when I was growing up in
Canada we would often make jokes about
how strict Asian parents are compared to
everyone else and how much they value
education so when I was in school there
were a lot lot of kids whose parents
were immigrants because it's Canada
there are people from everywhere like in
my class they would have kids from China
kids from Japan kids from India from
Pakistan from Iran from so many
different countries but they were
usually born in Canada but their parents
came from their respective countries and
I remember these parents would often put
their kids in
extracurricular tutoring things like
Kuman for example many students in my
classes went to Kuman which taught them
math and it helped a lot they got by far
the best grades in the class uh for
math so in Canada it it varies some
parents are strict some parents are not
very strict in general I think think
they are less strict than parents in
Vietnam these days but also I know in
Vietnam it varies as well some parents
are very strict some parents not so much
at the end of the day we're all kind of
the same you know we're we're all just
humans trying to do our best um there
are some small differences but yeah all
right so the last thing is uniforms in
Vietnam uniforms are mandatory at most
schools both Public
Schools both public schools and private
schools now these uniforms are usually
uh a light colored shirt with dark pants
in Canada uniforms are not nearly as
common they only really wear uniforms at
private schools or religious schools but
when I went to a public school I never
had to wear any uniform or anything like
that so in Canada we don't have uniforms
but we do have uh like a dress code for
example you can't have a shirt with bad
words on it or you can't wear a hat with
a particular plant on it I think you
probably know the leaf I'm talking about
if you wore those they would maybe send
you home to change or they would just
make you take it off but that's about it
okay guys the last part of this podcast
I want to tell you the most important
concept for learning so this is from a
book called make it
stick and it has a few interesting
Concepts on how to learn but one really
important one was the more difficult
something is the better your brain
learns it for example example if you're
learning English and you learn a new
word some people think the best way to
learn a word is by writing it down 50
times it's like if I write it down 50
times or a 100 times then there's no way
I will forget it right maybe this has
happened to you you still forgot the
word even after you wrote it so many
times and then you think oh I just can't
learn English or I just can't learn
languages but the reason why that's not
effective is because your brain is not
being challenged you're just writing the
word writing the word writing the word
whereas if you do something more
challenging with the word like using it
in a sentence using it properly in a
sentence then your brain has to work
harder thinking about the word and it
will form more connections to other
things so sometimes the easier way we do
that because uh you don't really have to
think to write it 50 times right but if
you study in a way where you have to
think more you have to retrieve it from
your brain and use it then that will
help you learn better and this isn't
just for language but it's for anything
learning anything that's why they also
say teaching is a great way to learn so
when you learn something if you teach
that concept to somebody else that's not
easy that's difficult and your brain has
to work quite hard to make these
connections and explain this concept in
a simple way but it will help you learn
things so anyway that's the concept in a
nutshell harder the harder you work the
the better you will remember something
so if you're taking if you're doing some
easy things to try to learn it might not
really be effective that's another
reason why reviewing notes is not really
effective because when you review your
notes it's easy you're just looking at
it again but when you do something
called active retrieval meaning you
think about everything that was in your
notes for example if if you took some
notes don't reread them but try to
rewrite all the notes you took in
different words try to remember all the
information and once you do that then
you can compare what you remembered and
what you didn't right so then you can
see oh I forgot to talk about this thing
this thing this thing and then try again
retrieve the information from your head
and write it in new words and that will
help you a lot more than just rereading
your notes all right so that'll be it

➔ Gerund as subject, Future with 'will', Relative pronoun 'that'

➔ The sentence begins with a gerund phrase (“having one exam”) functioning as the subject. “you’ll go to” is a contraction of “you will go to”, expressing a future action. The word 'that' introduces a defining relative clause.

  • so first I will start this podcast with my own personal experience with School

➔ Future with 'will' + infinitive, Prepositional phrase of experience

➔ The phrase “I will start” demonstrates the use of 'will' to express a future intention. “with my own personal experience” is a prepositional phrase modifying 'podcast', indicating the topic of the podcast.

  • so first I will start this podcast with my own personal experience with School uh and then we will talk about the school system in general in Vietnam

➔ Coordinating conjunction 'and', Adverb 'then', Prepositional phrase of location

➔ The conjunction 'and' connects two independent clauses. 'Then' indicates a sequence of events. “in Vietnam” is a prepositional phrase specifying the location of the school system being discussed.

  • do we have strict testing in Canada what are the parents attitudes towards their children studying in Canada are they as strict as Vietnamese parents

➔ Indirect questions, Noun + 'attitudes towards', Comparative adjectives

➔ The sentences are structured as indirect questions. “attitudes towards” is a common collocation. The phrase “as strict as” is a comparative structure used to compare the strictness of Canadian and Vietnamese parents.
