hello and welcome back to the English
dialogue podcast I'm Mike and as always
I'm here with Emma how's it going today
Emma I'm doing well Mike today's topic
is something I think a lot of people
especially younger listeners can relate
to Absol absolutely we're discussing
social media addiction and whether it's
quietly impacting the younger
generation's lives are they destroying
their lives without even realizing it
that's a big question we all know social
media is everywhere but how do we
distinguish healthy use from addiction
it's tough let's think about what
addiction means it usually involves an
inability to stop using something
despite negative
consequences do do we see that with
social media yes often we do young
people today might find themselves
spending hours scrolling through feeds
unable to put down their phones even
when they have important tasks to do
they might struggle to focus on studying
feel anxious without constant updates or
measure their self-worth by the number
of likes and comments they receive in
some cases this Behavior mimics classic
signs of addiction withdrawal when they
can't access their apps compulsive
checking and a diminished sense of time
and reality it can slowly erode their
self-esteem productivity and real world
social
connections that's a powerful
description social media platforms are
designed to be engaging the infinite
scroll like shares these features hook
users but are they consciously
destroying their lives or is it more
subtle I think it's largely subconscious
most young people don't wake up thinking
I'll ruin my life with social media
today instead it's a gradual process
they find themselves more distracted
stressed about their online Persona and
disconnected from the physical world we
should consider mental health there's
evidence that excessive social media use
can lead to anxiety depression and
loneliness young people might compare
their lives to Polished curated images
of others feeling inadequate and unhappy
that's a huge issue teens scrolling
through curated Instagram feeds see a
distorted reality friends looking
perfect always having fun achieving
success they don't see the struggles the
boring moments or the failures behind
the scenes constant comparison can
create feelings of inferiority and
self-doubt over time this can erode
self-confidence and
happiness moreover the pressure to
maintain an appealing online image can
become a stressful NeverEnding task it's
not just a Time sync it can harm their
emotional
well-being that does sound harmful
another angle is how social media
affects attention
spans young people might find it harder
to concentrate on a book a conversation
or a movie without reaching for their
phones could this be affecting their
academic performance and career
prospects down the line
definitely constant interruptions and
stimulus from social media can make it
difficult to focus on long-term goals
there's also the issue of sleep
deprivation if they stay up late
scrolling this can affect their overall
health and
productivity so we have mental health
concerns academic and productivity
issues and even physical health factors
like sleep
all are subtle forms of life disruption
social media addiction doesn't have to
look dramatic it can be slow and steady
precisely another subtle aspect is how
it shapes identity young people might
begin to Define themselves by how they
appear online instead of exploring their
interests in the real world they might
Chase Online Trends seeking validation
through likes rather than pursuing
genuine Hobbies or
relationships over time this can limit
their personal growth and
self-discovery they might not even
realize that they're molding their
identity around social media feedback
rather than their true passions and
values there's a social aspect too isn't
everyone doing it if all their friends
are online all the time it feels normal
the problem might not even register as
something harmful because it's become
the cultural norm
exactly what used to seem like addiction
now looks like standard teenage Behavior
but normalizing it doesn't make it
healthy we have to be aware that just
because everyone's doing it doesn't mean
it's good now to be fair social media
isn't all bad it can connect people
provide educational content and offer
support
communities the issue is excessive and
Mindless use right definitely social
media can be a fantastic tool if used
mindfully staying in touch with distant
relatives discovering new interests
learning about global events or finding
a supportive group that shares your
hobbies the problem arises when it
shifts from a useful tool to a
compulsion when scrolling replaces
reading watching a friend's video
replaces meeting in person and likees
start dictating your mood that's where
it turns dark it's not about eliminating
social media entirely but about finding
a healthy balance so how do we encourage
young people to develop healthier habits
should parents set screen time limits
should schools teach digital literacy
and responsible use all of the above
might help education on digital
well-being is crucial young people
should learn how these platforms work
the algorithms the psychology behind
notifications and how to set boundaries
for the
elves self-awareness is key if teens
understand that these apps are designed
to be addictive they can approach them
more critically they might turn off
unnecessary notifications set time
limits or dedicate certain hours of the
day to being offline parents and
Educators can model good behavior by
putting their devices down and showing
that Real Life Connections matter
governments and tech companies could
also play a role by offer offering
better privacy settings transparency and
tools to limit screen time it's a
collective effort absolutely we need a
cultural shift right now it's cool to be
online all the time maybe in the future
it'll be cool to have a balanced life
some online presence but also plenty of
offline activities that nurture the body
mind and soul that would be great
imagine young people engaging in sports
Arts Community projects and still having
social media but not at the expense of
their mental health it's about restoring
balance think about the long-term
consequences if we don't address this we
could have a generation facing increased
mental health issues socialization
problems difficulty in managing stress
and reduced ability to
concentrate this not only affects their
personal lives but can Ripple into to
the workforce Innovation and social
cohesion on a personal level excessive
social media use can steal valuable time
they could invest in learning new skills
building deeper friendships or
discovering their life's purpose that's
a frightening scenario but it's not
inevitable awareness is growing and many
young people are already taking steps to
limit their usage some are practicing
digital detoxes leaving their phones in
another room while studying or turning
to hobbies that don't involve
screens yes and peer support can help if
friends agree to spend time together
without phones it becomes easier to
resist the pull creating new social
norms where it's okay even expected to
disconnect sometimes and we should
acknowledge that social media isn't
inherently evil it's how we use it by
turning it into a conscious Choice
rather than a reflex young people can
regain control they can decide when to
log on and when to enjoy real life
moments this empowerment can protect
their mental health and ensure they
don't Sleepwalk into destructive habits
I like that perspective we're not
powerless victims young people can be
educated informed and empowered to use
social media as a tool rather than be
used by it
so is the younger generation destroying
their lives without knowing some might
be heading down that path due to
unawareness but with proper guidance
education and personal responsibility
they can prevent it we just need to
shine a light on the issue exactly let's
frame social media as something that
requires intentional engagement just
like we teach children about healthy
eating habits we should teach them about
healthy digital habits
with time they'll learn to spot when
they're using social media productively
versus when they're getting sucked into
an addictive
cycle that's a good takeaway it's about
awareness balance and conscious choices
the younger generation doesn't have to
be doomed by social media they can shape
how it fits into their lives rather than
letting it shape them well said social
media can be a space for creativity
learning and connection if used wisely
we owee it to our youth to support them
in finding that balance so there you
have it social media addiction is real
and can be destructive if left unchecked
but knowledge is Power by recognizing
the risks and taking steps to manage
their habits young people can ensure
they aren't inadvertently harming
themselves if you're listening and you
feel you're spending too much time
online consider small changes turn off
notifications set time limits try a
weekend digital detox notice how you
feel afterward we'd love to hear your
thoughts have you struggled with social
media addiction or found strategies that

on the English dialogue podcast we hope
this conversation sheds light on an
important issue until next time take

to live fully both online and off
