There are three books in the Bible known as the wisdom literature 00:04
Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Job 00:08
The first proverbs showed us that God is wise and just 00:11
Yeah we learned that God has ordered the world so that it's fair 00:15
the righteous are rewarded the wicked are punished 00:18
in other words you get what you deserve. 00:22
But then we meet Ecclesiastes who observes people don't always get what they deserve 00:23
Yeah he said the world isn't always fair. 00:29
The life is unpredictable and hard to comprehend just like smoke. 00:32
And this makes you wonder okay well is God wise and just? 00:37
Exactly and so it's that question that is being 00:41
explored in the final book of wisdom Job. 00:44
Alright let's dive in. 00:48
So Job begins with the strange story that takes place up in the heavens which are described 00:51
something like a heavenly command center. 00:56
So God is there with these angelic creatures called the sons of God and 00:58
they're all their reporting for duty. 01:03
And God points out this guy Job his servant showing our righteous and good he is. 01:05
Then one of these angelic creatures approaches He's referred to in Hebrew as 01:10
The Satan. 01:15
The Satan, who is this? 01:16
Well, this word is actually a title which literally means the one who is opposed. 01:18
So out of this whole crew he is the one questioning how God is running the world. 01:23
And he proposes that Job might not actually love God 01:28
that he's only a good person because God rewards him. 01:31
If God were to take away all of the good things he gave to Job then 01:34
we would see his true colors. 01:38
So he thinks Job is just working the system? 01:41
That's exactly right. Maybe he's obeying just to get what he wants. 01:44
So God agrees to this experiment and allows the Satan to 01:48
inflict suffering on Job. 01:53
And Job losses everyone and everything that he cares about. It is devastating. 01:56
And remember he deserves none of this God himself said so 02:02
The remarkable thing is that in the midst of all this suffering, 02:06
Job still praises God. 02:10
At least for chapters one and two. 02:12
But then in chapter 3 we find out how he's really feeling inside. 02:15
He unleashes this poem that reveals this devastation. 02:19
It's a long elaborate curse on the day that he was born 02:23
After this some of Job's friends come to visit him 02:26
to offer their help and all of them are like 02:30
Job, you must have done something horribly wrong to deserve this. 02:32
After all, we know God is just and we know the world is ordered by God's justice and fairness 02:35
so you must be getting what you deserve. 02:41
And for the next thirty four chapters the friends and Job go back and forth 02:45
in very dense Hebrew poetry. 02:49
His friends keep speculating about why God might have sent such suffering 02:51
and even start making up lists of hypothetical sins that Job must have committed. 02:56
But after each accusation Job defends his innocence. 03:00
And Job is innocent. 03:04
He is! He's also on an emotional roller coaster 03:06
At some moments he's very confident that God is still wise and just. 03:09
Yet in other moments he's doubting God's goodness. 03:13
He even comes to accuse God of being reckless unfair and corrupt. 03:16
So by the end of the dialogue Job demands that God come and explain himself in person. 03:21
And God does so he comes in the form of a great storm cloud 03:28
Now God doesn't give Job a direct answer. 03:33
He doesn't tell Job about the conversation with the Satan 03:37
Yeah he does something very different . He takes Job on a virtual tour of the universe. 03:40
He shows Job how grand the world is. 03:45
And he asked him if he's even capable of running it or 03:48
understanding it just for a day . 03:51
He shows how much detail there is in the world. 03:54
Things that we might see every day but really don't understand at all. 03:57
But God does he knows it all intimately. 04:02
He pays attention to the beauty and operations of the universe in ways that we haven't even imagined 04:05
and in places that we will never see. 04:11
Then to conclude God shows Job two wonderous beasts and 04:14
brags about how great they are. 04:19
Yeah they are dangerous. 04:21
I mean they would kill you without even thinking about it 04:23
And God says they're not evil. 04:26
They're actually a part of his good world. 04:30
And then that's it that's God's whole defense. 04:33
It's kind of weird. I mean what was this all about? 04:37
It seems to be this. From Job's point of view it looks like God is not just. 04:41
But God's perspective is infinitely bigger. 04:47
He is dynamically interacting with a whole universe of complexity when he makes decisions. 04:50
And this is what God calls his wisdom. 04:56
So Job asking God to defend himself is actually kind of absurd. 04:59
He couldn't comprehend this kind of complexity even if he wanted to. 05:04
So where does this leave us? 05:08
Well, leaves Job in a place of humility. He never learned why he suffered. 05:11
And yet he's able to live in peace and in the fear of the Lord 05:16
But that's not where the book ends because after this God restores to Job double everything he had lost. 05:22
And this again is surprising. I mean, is this a reward, is God saying 05:29
"Congratulations Job you passed this elaborate test." 05:33
No I mean the whole book just made the 05:36
point that Job losing everything was not a punishment and so now getting it back isn't a reward. 05:38
So why does he get it back? 05:44
Apparently God in His wisdom decided to give Job a gift 05:46
we don't know why but what we do know is that 05:49
Job is now the kind of person who no matter what comes 05:52
good or bad he can trust God's wisdom 05:56
And that's the book of Job and the end of our wisdom series. 06:00
These biblical books of wisdom are amazing. 06:04
Each one offers a unique perspective on the good life. 06:07

There are three books in the Bible known as the wisdom literature
Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Job
The first proverbs showed us that God is wise and just
Yeah we learned that God has ordered the world so that it's fair

But then we meet Ecclesiastes who observes people don't always get what they deserve
Yeah he said the world isn't always fair.
The life is unpredictable and hard to comprehend just like smoke.
And this makes you wonder okay well is God wise and just?
Exactly and so it's that question that is being
explored in the final book of wisdom Job.
Alright let's dive in.
So Job begins with the strange story that takes place up in the heavens which are described
something like a heavenly command center.
So God is there with these angelic creatures called the sons of God and
they're all their reporting for duty.

Then one of these angelic creatures approaches He's referred to in Hebrew as
The Satan.
The Satan, who is this?
Well, this word is actually a title which literally means the one who is opposed.
So out of this whole crew he is the one questioning how God is running the world.
And he proposes that Job might not actually love God
that he's only a good person because God rewards him.
If God were to take away all of the good things he gave to Job then

That's exactly right. Maybe he's obeying just to get what he wants.

Key Vocabulary

We're updating this section. Stay tuned!

Key Grammar Structures

  • The first proverbs showed us that God is wise and just

    ➔ Indirect statement with 'that'

➔ This sentence uses 'that' to introduce an indirect statement, reporting what the proverbs showed. The structure is: main clause + 'that' + subordinate clause. Here, 'showed us' is the main verb and 'God is wise and just' is the content of the indirect statement.

  • in other words you get what you deserve.

    ➔ Relative clause with 'what'

➔ The word "what" functions as a relative pronoun introducing a relative clause. It refers to "the thing that" or "that which". In this case, "what you deserve" refers to the things (good or bad) that you have earned or are entitled to based on your actions.

  • Yeah he said the world isn't always fair.

➔ Negation with 'isn't' and adverb of frequency 'always'

➔ This sentence uses the negative contraction "isn't" (is not) to deny that the world is always fair. The adverb of frequency "always" modifies the verb, indicating that the statement is not true in every instance. The combination "isn't always" suggests the world is sometimes unfair.

  • And he proposes that Job might not actually love God

➔ Modal verb 'might' for possibility, Subjunctive Mood (implied)

➔ The modal verb "might" indicates a possibility or a suggestion. The subjunctive mood is *implied* after verbs like 'propose', 'suggest', 'recommend' when the clause expresses a suggestion or a proposition. Although "might not love" doesn't explicitly use the base form, the context suggests a degree of uncertainty typical of subjunctive constructions after a verb of suggestion. The explicit use of the subjunctive after 'propose' is more common in formal contexts.
