it is important to not sulk now you 00:00
could call me a monk who did not sell 00:02
her Ferrari even when you go in an 00:04
airplane when they're giving that you 00:06
know emergency uh talk they say when 00:08
there will be a oxygen mask you put on 00:12
yourself first and on your child later 00:14
just say I get to do this right I get to 00:17
go to work I get to see my friends how 00:19
much is it changing your life yeah no 00:21
how many zeros can you add if you're a 00:24
millionaire or a billionaire you should 00:25
not judge a book by its cover but the 00:27
reality is that people do judge a book 00:29
by its 00:31
cover hello and welcome back to the 00:38
podcast if you're new here my name is 00:40
Sheen I'm your host and today we're 00:42
joined by the wonderful Dr Sona Sergeant 00:44
saana is a doctor philanthropist 00:46
entrepreneur artist and she's the 00:49
director at the denu group and she's 00:51
here today to share with us everything 00:54
that she has learned through her 00:56
wonderful Journey hello s welcome thank 00:57
you so much for having me here Sheen 00:59
thank you how are you doing I'm so 01:01
excited to be here cuz you know it's 01:04
just every day you don't meet somebody 01:06
like you you've got literally the Sheen 01:09
in you you got the shine and Sparkle so 01:10
I'm really happy to exchange this energy 01:12
that's so sweet honestly when I was 01:14
doing my homework for this podcast and I 01:16
was watching all of your reals I was 01:18
like your energy is contagious it's very 01:19
rare to come across people who are 01:22
bubbly and happy all the time and I'm 01:24
really happy that you're actually like 01:26
this in person as well so very excited 01:27
for this conversation so tell us a 01:29
little bit about your journey oh well 01:31
where do we start it started with 01:33
medicine right should we go there um so 01:35
why did I want to be a doctor yes um 01:38
somehow because my family we have a 01:41
family of 36 doctors at the moment you 01:44
know so uh I like how you said at the 01:46
moment like there's more because this is 01:48
ongoing right so um when you have so 01:50
many healers in your family and and 01:53
coming from the Indian diaspora you 01:56
choose things which put you at a certain 01:59
level and it becoming a doctor is always 02:01
something which is respected throughout 02:03
you know and I believe that being a 02:05
Healer in any form it's amazing and I 02:06
chose to be a doctor cuz I always looked 02:08
up to my father who's an amazing doctor 02:10
and he was always a fun person very 02:13
handsome and still he was a doctor not a 02:15
boring person so I thought okay I can be 02:17
a doctor like him and I chose to be a 02:19
doctor um that's why I chose the 02:22
profession but then um you know while I 02:25
was becoming a doctor I also experienced 02:29
that there is so much need in the 02:32
Society of you 02:35
know expensive treatments which can be 02:36
somehow delivered to the patients in 02:40
some other way possible you know to make 02:42
it available to them so that pain was 02:44
always there I mean I it could be going 02:46
back to my upbringing and also being a 02:49
sensitive person I always saw that pain 02:51
in the society even while I was in my 02:53
college I used to use my scholarship to 02:55
you know help some poor patients and 02:57
just just get their treatments done and 02:59
pay for their labs and stuff so it was 03:01
always something which was there in my 03:03
personality and then I came back to 03:06
Dubai with my family and here it looked 03:09
very glitzy and glams which is usually 03:12
the facade which people see which is 03:14
there you know Dubai is amazing uh it's 03:16
literally a realistic Utopia uh that's 03:19
how I put to Dubai but the thing is that 03:22
when you look for you will still find 03:25
places where there are needs and you can 03:27
fulfill them so that's what I looked for 03:30
and I started working with the talisia 03:32
patients in the talisia center here in 03:34
the hospital uh where I felt that it is 03:37
not just that you need to help patients 03:40
monetarily you need to give them some 03:42
time and maybe create some you know art 03:44
events or do some classes with them or 03:48
for that matter just spread uh you know 03:51
some information about the awareness of 03:53
of the of the situation what people go 03:56
through when they're in talisia so 03:58
but and then through that journey I got 04:00
you know associated with the genetic 04:03
Disease Association here H which is led 04:05
by Dr Maria matar and um she's been 04:07
working very hard to you know clear out 04:10
um tmia which is a genetic disease uh 04:13
and I along with her somehow kept 04:16
working in creating the awareness so 04:19
that was one of the things that I was 04:21
working on while all of this was going 04:23
on I got married and uh um there is a 04:25
very important division in danub called 04:29
danub welfare center so when uh our 04:31
chairman dad he saw that I'm into 04:35
helping people he said s why don't you 04:38
also join Danny welfare center and 04:40
that's when I was on the cruise and 04:43
getting my makeup done and back I had 04:45
already set up in Dubai um a team which 04:48
were doing registrations for blue colled 04:51
workers for studies okay yeah so and 04:53
then that's how the journey with welfare 04:56
center started how we because this was 04:58
one of the dreams of our chairman ran 05:00
Sergeant to help blue colored workers 05:02
you know so and that's the Journey of 05:05
them getting the education and helping 05:07
them and there are so many other things 05:09
you know while you know there is no end 05:12
to helping people because it could be 05:14
monetarily it could be education it 05:16
could be just giving them a good vibe 05:18
you know so and that's how life is and 05:21
I've been through you know those stages 05:22
and I love to give that energy to people 05:25
the good energy and that's my journey oh 05:27
wow that's beautiful and what I love is 05:30
how many times you've pivoted a little 05:32
bit you know you're you're keeping to 05:35
what you're doing but you're also like 05:36
venturing into new aspects of work and 05:38
how do you approach this you know 05:41
because you went from obviously medical 05:43
field to business field and obviously 05:45
now with denu you do a lot of real 05:48
estate as well so how do you approach 05:49
any big pivots in your career okay so 05:51
let me start like this that we as women 05:55
we are 05:58
a form of God's light on Earth and this 05:59
was one of my recent posts on Instagram 06:03
as well that you know as women when we 06:05
are born we are born as Lakshmi into the 06:07
family we bring that good energy into 06:09
the family you know and then we give all 06:11
that amazing vibrancy into our family 06:14
you know you will see any any any house 06:17
who's got a daughter they have that you 06:19
know beautiful colors in their home and 06:21
any father would vouch for what I'm 06:24
saying over here and coming from the 06:26
Indian diaspora you know in India there 06:28
are uh something called a Davi and for 06:30
the certain audience who don't know what 06:33
it is a Davi is the idol of a goddess 06:34
which has 10 hands and each hand holds a 06:38
different tool in her hand you know one 06:41
could be it could be for me for example 06:43
it could be a pen it could be a book it 06:46
could be a music instrument it could be 06:47
a healing instrument like a stethoscope 06:49
or it could be you know love and kisses 06:51
for my family so we as women are born as 06:54
goddesses and each woman is a goddess 06:58
and we are all capable of doing a lot of 07:00
things so how I would say that I have 07:02
always wanted to do a lot of things in 07:05
life 07:07
and that thought of being Larger than 07:09
Life I have always kept it alive what is 07:11
larger than life you know our 07:14
limitations our thoughts are what limit 07:16
us right so when you open that cage you 07:18
become Larger than Life so if I want to 07:21
do something I always keep that bucket 07:24
list and I repeat it wherever I go that 07:26
I encourage people to keep that bucket 07:29
list if you don't want to put a timeline 07:31
to it don't put a timeline to it but 07:33
keep it the there will come a day where 07:35
you will accomplish it and that's what I 07:37
have done after becoming finishing my 07:39
med school you know I also did an MBA in 07:42
healthcare services where we also 07:45
studied business so that's why the 07:46
healthcare division in danub was started 07:48
and you know uh American Aesthetics is 07:51
that where I'm managing right now uh 07:53
which is uh you know Under the Umbrella 07:55
of plastic surgery everything comes as 07:57
you know aesthetic transformation over 07:59
there uh I call it also as a happiness 08:01
Center cuz you know you come in and get 08:03
yourself fixed and you look you feel 08:05
good you look good you know so that's 08:07
what I have been uh why should we put a 08:10
limitation of our career brand onto our 08:13
uh expertise or to anything that we 08:17
choose to in life I I say we are 08:20
Limitless I agree I agree but I love 08:23
that so you see the way you talk about 08:25
this it makes me feel so empowered but 08:27
it's just how I I get it right it's 08:29
realistically we all know what we want 08:32
to do and at some point you and I I 08:34
don't remember who said it I think it's 08:37
Mark Twain right who said it there are 08:38
two most important days of your life the 08:40
first one is when you're born and the 08:41
second one is when you figure out why 08:43
you were born and clearly you figured 08:45
out what your mission is on this planet 08:47
right but then and now walk us through 08:49
what a day-to-day with SAA looks like 08:52
I'm sure no two days are the same right 08:55
but but what does a traditional day 08:56
looks like so I want to add to something 08:58
that you said about Mark Twain there is 09:01
also something that I came across and it 09:03
has repeatedly been coming across in 09:05
front of me that uh we all live two 09:07
lives one is the life that was given to 09:09
us the second life that when we realize 09:12
that that is the only life that we have 09:15
and we live it to the fullest wow so 09:17
yeah you you got to keep your Ambitions 09:20
and that's what drives me my brother was 09:23
asking me the other day that you know s 09:25
you why do you need to do so many things 09:28
what is it that comes in your heart when 09:32
you wake up in the morning so I will 09:34
tell you so when I sleep in the night I 09:36
look at my calendar the next day this 09:39
helps me design my day for the next day 09:41
cuz I cannot just wake up and not have 09:44
anything to do this doesn't mean that I 09:46
have a lot of clutter in my head no 09:48
organization is definitely something 09:51
that helps you optimize your time and 09:54
resources so for me time management is 09:56
definitely something which I would put 09:59
as my first and foremost you know 10:02
strength and that also helps in not only 10:04
multitasking but also getting the best 10:09
out of your people and that's where I 10:11
come to my second strength which is my 10:13
team and my people right so when you 10:15
have the right team which doesn't just 10:17
Dawn upon you know you have to create 10:19
that team it takes time to have that 10:22
team with you where you have a sync 10:24
where you have similar thoughts and also 10:26
you Empower them you know so be it my 10:28
from my home if it is my staff or my 10:30
nannies you know or my driver or my 10:32
house manager you know you it is it is 10:35
very important to have that sync of 10:37
thoughts communication and understanding 10:39
between the team and also to share a 10:42
good energy yeah so you give some you 10:45
get some you know so that's one thing 10:47
from the home and coming to work again 10:49
it's the same story that that the team 10:52
needs to feel that ownership you know so 10:54
and how does that come it comes from Top 10:57
to bottom and then from bottom to up mhm 10:59
so that's what it goes when time 11:01
management and team is important for me 11:04
and that's what helps me so if I slept 11:06
yesterday I saw my calendar for today 11:08
what I need to do and then I wake up 11:10
early morning I go to my sons cuz they 11:13
sleep in the other room the boys uh I 11:16
wake them up they go go to their shower 11:18
to get ready for the school then I go to 11:20
my daughter I wake her up get her uh to 11:22
go get into the shower and then come 11:25
back uh meanwhile I'm coming back Adel 11:27
is up yeah so all of them are up and I 11:30
see the daddy's already in the swimming 11:33
pool mom's almost going to wake up so 11:34
all our family lives together right so 11:37
and then um we all have breakfast 11:40
together and everyone runs away to their 11:42
work you know so ad has to go to early 11:43
morning gym and then he has his own 11:46
hectic day uh we say hello hi goodbye 11:48
and then Happy good day and then I rush 11:51
to my gym then from gym I run to my work 11:53
and then by the time it's 5:30 is is 11:56
when uh my clock in my head starts 11:59
sticking that okay now is the time when 12:01
my children need me cuz I need to put 12:02
them to bed early too so I rush home and 12:04
then um you know spend some quality time 12:08
with them swimming or playing or just 12:10
you know enjoying and uh By the time 12:13
it's 8:00 they're tucked in bed oh wow 12:15
and that's the time when we party uh if 12:18
there are any occasions you know usually 12:20
the formal events and just friend visits 12:22
Etc that's also post8 so you know it's 12:25
just like in the time and people and you 12:28
get S days a week and 24 hours a day so 12:31
how the best you can get out of it you 12:34
know that's how what it is wow I love 12:37
that and I think you were telling me 12:39
this earlier as well that as a woman you 12:42
wear many hats but when you're wearing 12:43
one hat you're fully focused in that hat 12:45
right and I think I love how your days 12:48
basically split in you being kind of 12:50
like the daughter-in-law and then the 12:52
woman at work and then the mom and then 12:54
you're being the fun sa in the and and 12:56
you you got to you know I believe that 12:59
it is important to not sulk of course 13:02
you know a lot of times I come across 13:05
people who are like oh my God another 13:07
party yeah no it's a blessing to have a 13:09
party you're blessed to have friends who 13:11
are wanting you to join them and have 13:13
fun with you you know or for that matter 13:14
oh my God I have to go to work again no 13:17
it's a blessing to be busy you know 13:19
we're we're so blessed that we have work 13:21
we have people to meet we have positive 13:23
energy you know everything is flowing in 13:26
the right direction so so it's very 13:28
important to get the right energy out of 13:30
your schedule you know and that also 13:32
Cascades down into all your teammates as 13:34
well so and we wear different hats I 13:36
think a lot of times uh I laugh at Adel 13:39
that which one are you going to meet 13:43
today which sun is coming which sun is 13:45
meeting you today so um yeah you wear 13:47
different hats and when you are living 13:50
in the moment you know life is also 13:52
about that balance so I have to also 13:54
struggle sometimes in in the sense that 13:57
I'm living in the moment but at the same 13:59
time my next schedule is also there so 14:02
we are capable of doing a lot of things 14:04
and that's where we Shuffle between the 14:06
hats and I forget who person which 14:08
person I am after this because I have to 14:10
switch my roles yes so if I'm painting 14:12
I'm an artist and I'm in that zone it's 14:15
a trance and that's how I will be able 14:16
to deliver fully in that role you know 14:19
so yeah and then you switch the 14:22
painting's done okay now the next step 14:23
what are you going to do okay food time 14:26
you're hungry the more uh I say that if 14:28
you're eating well you're drinking your 14:31
water well you're taking the right 14:32
nutritions and if you're working out MH 14:34
that also takes away 80% of your issues 14:37
in life yes you know so I propagate I 14:40
say it out loud and I repeated it that 14:43
it is very important for everybody and 14:45
especially for women to take care of 14:49
themselves cuz you are the backbone of 14:51
the family exactly I agree and I love 14:52
what you talked about the mindset being 14:55
so important into to everything because 14:57
that's how you start your day and it 15:00
impacts the rest of your day however you 15:02
approach everything and I love I heard 15:04
this somewhere where it says instead of 15:06
saying oh my God I have to go to work I 15:08
have to do this just say I get to do 15:10
this right I get to go to work I get to 15:13
see my friends yeah and it's a change of 15:15
just reframing of how you approach 15:18
everything instead of seeing it as I'm 15:21
forced to do this it's more that oh it's 15:22
a new opportunity for me exactly you 15:24
know like like Jim some people they 15:26
including my a lot of my family members 15:30
you know they're like oh this is such a 15:32
punishment this no why you're blessed 15:35
you're able to take some time out and 15:38
come to the gym and you have a trainer 15:39
and you're able to work out this you're 15:41
able to do this it's amazing you know 15:42
you should be thankful to God and once 15:45
you change that perspective when you 15:47
start loving going to the gym that's 15:48
when a lot of things change cuz it's a 15:51
chain of thoughts right it's not just 15:53
easier you yield better cuz everything 15:55
is in the mind and we are very capable 15:58
of taking control of mind you know and 16:00
the sooner you do that the better it is 16:03
cuz that's when you can really become 16:05
Larger than Life hey I love that now I 16:07
want to go back to what you were talking 16:10
about how your team is one of your 16:12
strengths right and I think this is one 16:14
thing especially as a woman leader uh it 16:16
becomes very important how you portray 16:18
yourself as a leader because there is 16:21
this very fine balance between being too 16:22
empathetic as a woman to your team and 16:25
also coming across as being too harsh 16:27
because you don't want to come across as 16:30
a woman so how do you strike this 16:31
balance so this is a fun thing I am also 16:33
learning from the Sharks I live with 16:37
which is rzan sajan and Adel sajan and 16:40
they are amazing leaders they have a lot 16:41
of things which are similar in them and 16:44
they have a lot of things which As 16:46
Leaders they are very different leaders 16:47
as well at the same time so some things 16:49
overlap and some things they bring very 16:50
unique so and for me um I bring my own 16:52
uh of course Essence as a person person 16:57
who is you know as a team leader but 16:59
also I learn from them CU they're 17:01
definitely amazing and they're they've 17:03
proven you know over time with their 17:05
track records so um it's it's a little 17:07
bit of a tug-of warar you know you do a 17:11
stick in carot um different leaders 17:14
different styles my leadership style is 17:19
more empathetic as you say but sometimes 17:22
it gets like okay now the delivery you 17:24
have to really you know put things into 17:26
point so as you with time and experience 17:28
it gets a little bit more easier to 17:30
deliver what you want so with our team 17:32
we have regular team meetings in that um 17:35
it is important to know what are the 17:39
challenges first we say that these are 17:41
our targets okay yes and we put 17:43
realistic targets which are time bound 17:46
of course in sales you got to put time 17:48
bound targets and then you discuss with 17:49
the team do you think it's achievable 17:52
you discuss with them and then say what 17:53
is it that you need as a tool to achieve 17:55
those okay while you take up the tools 17:58
ask them what will be the challenges you 18:01
might face and then we find out 18:02
Solutions you know sometimes on the spot 18:04
or sometimes on the go because some 18:07
things can be a strategy but to achieve 18:09
that point A to point B you need certain 18:11
tactics and tactics can change you know 18:14
so a lot of times we keep certain 18:17
strategies the main thing but of course 18:19
some things if you need to modulate we 18:21
change and if somebody's slacking you 18:23
need to see if it is a personal problem 18:25
or if it is a uh consistent issue and 18:27
they're not delivering out of being lazy 18:30
and sometimes what happens a chain is as 18:33
strong as the weakest link of course 18:35
okay so you need to really constantly 18:37
diagnose what is the issue happening and 18:39
if it is going to be a chronic issue 18:42
then you really need to strike it you 18:44
know and you can give a few chances 18:45
normally my number is three for the 18:48
chances and you give a few chances you 18:50
help the person to work uh it out but if 18:52
it doesn't work then it doesn't work 18:54
okay so you have to keep shuffling 18:56
between uh I don't like to do the higher 18:58
and fire so we I give a lot of chances 19:00
but the recent practice in business they 19:03
keep saying that the sooner the you fire 19:05
the better it is yeah so a lot of 19:08
business practices and leaders are doing 19:10
that as well because there is no time to 19:12
lose uh for me I am a little bit more 19:14
warm and I happen to give more chances 19:17
to people um because I am always you 19:19
know considerate about what's going on 19:22
behind this issue you know so that's 19:24
what my Approach is and um 19:26
after all of this uh besides the sales 19:29
it is very important you know in all of 19:31
danu and including my verticals as well 19:33
that we make sure that customer service 19:36
is a full package you know cuz One 19:38
customer a happy customer will bring in 19:41
two or three more happy customers or 19:44
probably even if it doesn't at least he 19:46
will come back you know uh while a sad 19:48
or unhappy customer can damage that same 19:52
image you know and a brand is built with 19:55
a lot of work over a period of time you 19:57
know uh if your number of negative 19:59
comments out of 1,000 the percentage is 20:02
smaller let's say 15 M you need to 20:04
address those but at least that number 20:07
should not go higher than like you know 20:09
a certain percentage so you need to 20:11
address the issues regularly it is very 20:13
important to be their handson um at the 20:16
same time you know it's it's just a 20:18
really good mix of things that you have 20:21
to be you know actively doing yeah wow I 20:23
love that thank you for taking us on 20:27
that little tour of your leadership and 20:29
how you work with the team and now of 20:31
course you're aom as well do you think 20:34
that plays a role in how you approach 20:36
business and approach your team now for 20:38
sure I one of the things that I say that 20:41
the you know men and a lot of women who 20:43
have not yet come to that stage you know 20:46
um it's important for me to share it 20:49
with them that becoming a mother really 20:51
opens up your heart uh to understanding 20:53
people more and especially now now that 20:56
I have more than one child uh it's a 20:58
community that I have in the house you 21:00
know and each one of them is different 21:02
they have their own personalities they 21:05
have their own choices and they have 21:06
their own ways and approach to different 21:08
things so it I knew it theoretically I 21:10
was trying to practice it in my life 21:13
earlier as well but now that it is there 21:15
in my house it just comes more naturally 21:18
to me to understand people more and you 21:21
know how what kind of approach should be 21:23
cut out to the to get the best out of 21:25
this person MH because in a team a team 21:27
is good as good as it Captain right so 21:30
if the captain is able to nurture the 21:33
talent in the team and get the best out 21:35
of that person you all perform well so 21:37
yes it has definitely helped me and um 21:40
uh it also helps me understand the women 21:43
who are having a family who are a part 21:46
of my team yes you know so we give them 21:49
a little bit of Leverage on that and we 21:52
understand them better and we help them 21:55
more you know so even though we always 21:56
have those rules to help women who are 21:59
pregnant or who are nursing or who have 22:01
kids so but becoming a mother it always 22:03
helps you know I mean it has helped me 22:05
definitely MH amazing so now I I want to 22:07
switch gear a little bit because you are 22:10
a little bit unique as a guest here and 22:11
I think most people who are watching or 22:14
listening will will think of you as 22:16
someone who has made it you know who is 22:18
doing well in life so if we were to look 22:20
at life through your lenses as someone 22:23
who's on the other side you know what 22:24
what is your relationship with money 22:27
okay so um as a person I'm very Sufi 22:30
okay and let me explain what a Sufi is 22:34
um uh I would be a Hermit otherwise if I 22:36
was not here and there was a time when I 22:39
really chose to really almost at the 22:41
verge of shaving my head and becoming a 22:44
monk oh wow so now you could call me a 22:46
monk who did not sell her her 22:48
Ferrari I love that so yeah and it's 22:52
funny that just yesterday I was having 22:56
this conversation with my husband that 22:58
he asked me that s uh would you become a 23:00
priest or a monk and I'm like ad when I 23:03
met you I was almost at the verge of 23:05
shaving my head and going to the 23:07
Himalayas you know so right there but it 23:08
is a bigger challenge to stay in this 23:11
world and strike a balance in these 23:14
worldly opportunities and Excel over 23:16
here while creating that peace in your 23:18
heart you know and that is a bigger 23:21
achievement and I would say that um you 23:23
can't achieve excellence and anything 23:27
cuz the end goal is God and Excellence 23:29
is only God but yes for sure I am always 23:31
actively working on that peace you know 23:35
which is most important and uh take on 23:38
money in today's day and age people 23:41
salute money they respect money they 23:43
would put a red carpet for money and 23:45
we've seen it you know it it happens 23:47
that there is a fun story about one 23:49
Saint in olden days in Persia uh that 23:51
when uh he was really respected by the 23:55
King at that time and the King sent some 23:58
robes and said that I would like to 24:01
invite you and I would like to host a 24:03
big feast in your honor okay and he said 24:05
he sent his acceptance and he said he 24:08
will be there then he was a big Saint 24:10
right so he was just in his sted clothes 24:13
and he went and when he was at the doors 24:15
of the of the big play Palace the people 24:16
at the the soldiers there they asked him 24:19
to stop and he said this is a big Feast 24:21
for a very big guest of the king what 24:23
are you doing here he said this is for 24:25
me the soldier laughed at him right and 24:26
then the saint went back and he wore his 24:29
golden robes and then he came and it was 24:31
he was really welcomed and then when he 24:33
was sitting with the King on the on the 24:35
feast table he started putting food into 24:37
his robes and the pockets and the Scurry 24:39
into his pocket and the king and 24:42
everybody the big people they were 24:43
really like what are you doing we we 24:44
would really like to know what you're 24:47
doing with all the respect to him he 24:49
said you know it was not me who was 24:51
invited it was my 24:53
robes oh wow yeah he's the C so so and 24:55
that was a big message and and it was 25:00
taken to the people that you know you 25:02
should not judge a book by its cover but 25:04
the reality is that people do judge a 25:06
book by its cover so yes money now that 25:08
I am a I would say a little wiser that 25:12
it is important but it should not be 25:15
something that you put forward as a 25:17
priority at the expense of your health 25:19
and your family's health MH it could be 25:21
mental health it could be physical 25:23
health but it is very important to to 25:25
earn money the right way to be ambitious 25:28
and money not only money it it come 25:31
there are a lot of things that you can 25:33
earn you can earn respect you can earn 25:34
your career you can earn you know there 25:36
are so many things that you earn with 25:38
time uh but money money I say that it is 25:40
not something that you should kill for 25:43
yes you should have the fire in you you 25:46
should have the ambition in you and keep 25:48
dreaming keep working towards it but it 25:50
should not be at the expense of your 25:53
mental health yeah and with money as 25:54
well you always reach a point where now 25:57
it's just extra money right how much is 25:58
changing your life many yeah no how many 26:01
zeros can you add let's say if you're a 26:03
millionaire or a billionaire there comes 26:05
a point where you you need to have 26:07
certain um uh points in life where you 26:10
want to help people you want to help 26:14
your family you want to work on mental 26:15
health of yourself your family your 26:17
friends and then your community gets 26:20
bigger you know so when if you see 26:22
anybody who has made it in life I always 26:24
look up to my uh you know father-in-law 26:28
and my husband you know but when I look 26:30
at them I know I see them so closely 26:32
they did not just land on top of the 26:35
mountain they have worked their way up 26:37
and that work is not just hard work in 26:39
terms of going to the office and getting 26:41
the work done there is a lot that comes 26:43
you know like taking care of your 26:46
friends you know as a leader I say this 26:48
story a lot of times that rzan sajun we 26:51
live together okay when he wakes up in 26:53
the morning he goes to his swimming he 26:55
does his yoga he meets his family which 26:57
is us and his mother who we live 26:59
together uh then he goes for his work he 27:01
comes late at night comes back has the 27:04
dinner and or sometimes skips the dinner 27:06
and goes to meet his friends who are 27:08
hosting a birthday or a wedding or 27:09
anything so he makes sure that his 27:11
friends also get their due respect and 27:13
time and then he comes back late in the 27:15
uh night and then wakes up early in the 27:18
morning and then the grind is there so 27:19
it's like the sun MH you know so the sun 27:21
is constantly working if we can't see 27:23
also that sun is working right so for as 27:25
an individual as well I always say that 27:28
even if you're sleeping you're sleeping 27:30
for something good the next day you're 27:32
sleeping to revive yourself you know so 27:35
if you put that energy in you that you 27:37
want to be productive in your sleep you 27:39
want your body to recover you want your 27:40
energy to recover the next day you will 27:43
be better and you will perform better 27:45
you know so and that's the example of 27:47
rwan sjun that he and I'm following 27:49
those footsteps as well and I have that 27:52
energy too that if I'm sleeping I know 27:54
that I want to rest now that my CS 27:56
recover my energy recovers and tomorrow 27:59
is a productive day again and I want to 28:01
be the best of myself you know so and 28:03
that's these energies together you know 28:05
creating your team caring for your team 28:08
caring for your family your friends all 28:10
together this all counts as your riches 28:13
MH oh yes wow that's incredible you you 28:16
mention your family quite a lot which I 28:19
love by the way but what would you say 28:21
is the main learning for you um let's 28:23
say Obviously personally I'm sure there 28:25
are many many many 28:27
but professionally when you you joined 28:28
this big family business what was the 28:31
mean learning for you mean learning 28:33
there are two things really really 28:36
important for life for your you would 28:37
call it success or what i' say your 28:41
relationships and your 28:45
Communication in my the family that I 28:48
live in in the leadership that I see and 28:51
the what I follow not only in my family 28:53
but as you know leaders of Dubai you 28:55
know it is so important to have the 28:58
right way of communication and the right 29:00
time of communication as well you know 29:02
it is important to act in the right time 29:04
if it is urgent you do it now there 29:06
there if you want to make a phone call 29:09
or if you want to reply to a WhatsApp or 29:10
an email you know you need to give the 29:12
right time if it is emergency you need 29:14
to call you know so to communicate it is 29:15
the strength of a person and to 29:18
communicate the right way to the right 29:20
person to in the right time and of 29:22
course this is also related to 29:25
relationships and main maintaining your 29:27
relationships that every relationship 29:29
you need to give its respect and time to 29:32
it m yeah wow it could be a relationship 29:35
with your client it could be with your 29:39
family it could be with your friends it 29:41
could be with you know your team anybody 29:42
and at any level of the hierarchy 29:45
relationship and communication that's 29:47
the key I love that well now that we're 29:49
talking about relationship this just 29:52
popped up into my mind we're going to 29:53
talk about relationship with yourself 29:54
now for a minute um if I were to ask you 29:56
on a happiness scale from 0 to 10 29:59
where's saana today oh I'm always 10 and 30:02
above ooh love that how no but I I have 30:05
to say this there are days yes uh it 30:08
could be related to my hormones or it 30:11
could be related to certain challenges 30:13
in life I try to be 10 and above but 30:14
it's it should not go to toxic 30:17
positivity of course not you know and a 30:19
lot of times when we post oh this and 30:21
that on positive stuff on Instagram 30:24
people don't see that they are 30:26
challenges that we meet as well and the 30:28
every day every day we find something or 30:30
the other as a small or big challenge 30:33
you know it could be just an order 30:35
waiting to be received yes and you get 30:37
impatient you know so self focus is as a 30:40
girl I say it is really really important 30:44
because uh instinctively we are 30:46
givers and uh we find more happiness in 30:49
giving and one of my TED Talks I also 30:52
said that charity and loving someone 30:55
these are the two most selfish things 30:58
that we do ooh let's talk about that 30:59
yeah we will come to that but happiness 31:02
and self focus is so important CU as 31:04
women we are the backbones of our family 31:06
you know and if we don't take care of 31:09
ourselves who will take care of the 31:10
others even when you go in an airplane 31:12
when they're giving that you know 31:15
emergency uh talk they say when there 31:17
will be a oxygen mask you put on 31:20
yourself first and on your child later 31:22
even in the video they show that the 31:25
child also should come later cuz if you 31:26
don't have the oxygen you will not be 31:28
able to help the other one also so there 31:30
are two people being damaged there so if 31:31
as a woman of the house as a girl you 31:34
know you need to really really take care 31:36
of yourself and taking care is I start 31:38
with 31:41
food food water and 31:41
sleep I'm not saying you need to sleep 31:45
10 hours a day I'm not even saying if 31:47
you don't if you are not able to sleep 8 31:49
hours a day do 6 hours but sleep at the 31:51
right time at the same time every day so 31:54
that your circadian rhythm comes into 31:56
place place and wake up at the same time 31:57
that's what is going to set your 32:00
hormones in place cuz we are evolved 32:01
beings you know and it's not even a joke 32:03
when we are a 2.0 version yeah and uh we 32:05
are not taking care of we are such 32:08
blessed beings we need to take care of 32:10
ourselves and once this is in place you 32:12
need to then start working on let's say 32:14
yoga or pilate or gym I say even half an 32:17
hour of any workout even if it is brisk 32:20
walking you know if you do that that 32:23
another you know you've done another B 32:25
of your thing when you're healthy you 32:28
perform better at work you when you 32:30
perform better at work you get better 32:33
money you get better confidence you get 32:35
you know everything just starts coming 32:38
full circle and you come back home 32:40
happier you know so everything starts 32:42
with your 32:44
health uh sometimes people just start 32:45
buying makeup and just covering things 32:48
up I like a little bit of makeup it's 32:50
nice you know but it should not be 32:53
something as a coverup yes you know you 32:54
need to to be glowing from inside from 32:57
your soul okay when you're healthy 32:59
mentally and physically the glow comes 33:01
out the confidence comes out and you're 33:03
able to help other people as well so 33:05
happiness and self-care is really really 33:07
important I put it as now my top 33:09
priority I love that but when you said 33:11
sometimes it goes a little bit down 33:15
lower than 10 but what is your approach 33:16
in general with challenges in life 33:19
whenever there's a challenging part 33:20
whether it's personal or professional 33:22
how do you deal with it so challenges 33:23
come different scales small big large 33:28
extra large or extra small 33:31
ex yes but you need to see what is the 33:35
problem so in medicine they teach you a 33:39
disease diagnosed well is half soled you 33:43
know so your prognosis is half already 33:47
fixed when you diagnose the disease 33:50
properly so if you know what the problem 33:52
is so when I face a problem my first 33:55
exercise mentally and now it's a 33:58
practice so what is it that I see what 34:00
is exactly the problem and can I define 34:03
it can I classify it you know and if I 34:06
need to delegate it to someone what is 34:08
it that is needed to do right now um 34:11
sometimes people say oh it's easier said 34:15
than done so one of the things one time 34:16
um I faced was my dad he had an issue a 34:19
health issue in the in the night 3:00 my 34:22
mom called me and she said we've called 34:25
an ambulance 34:27
I jumped while I was on the phone I 34:28
changed my clothes and in the night 3:00 34:30
what do you do Adel was not at home so I 34:33
don't know what to do okay I while I was 34:35
getting out of the car I called my one 34:37
of my male servant who I know is a 34:39
responsible person I said I'm going to 34:41
my mom's house if there is anything I 34:43
will call you so please keep your phone 34:45
on on and one one of the nannies I told 34:47
the same thing because I need at least 34:49
if one will fail the second one then I 34:51
called my secretary I know she will 34:53
respond I said this is the emergency if 34:55
needed I'll call you she said okay on 34:57
the way cuz there was no other male 35:00
person I called one of my relative cuz I 35:02
know he would respond you know you need 35:04
to have your brains your head on your 35:06
shoulder even in emergency think cuz I'm 35:07
speeding I need to keep my cameras also 35:10
and I should not be jumping at radar and 35:13
you know stuff like that in time I was 35:15
there the ambulance had reached I had 35:18
reached luckily nothing was such a big 35:20
damage but he was taken to the hospital 35:23
and everything but I was really proud of 35:25
myself that I had my head on shoulders 35:28
and I was not balling on the way or 35:30
something like thatz so that was the 35:32
thing that proved to myself that my head 35:34
will be on my shoulders in any emergency 35:37
so it is so important in any kind of 35:39
issue that you face that you need to 35:42
know what is the problem and what are 35:44
the steps you need to do in that moment 35:46
to solve it and then you see later on 35:47
what you can do and furthermore you know 35:51
so that okay my dad needs to take care 35:53
of himself and the diet and gym and this 35:56
and that what all but you need to know 35:58
in that moment what you need to do and 36:01
what are the following steps I try to do 36:02
that I like that so just like keeping 36:06
your emotions under control while you're 36:08
dealing with the problem yes and I think 36:11
that's the challenge that most people 36:12
struggle with including me right 36:14
whenever something goes wrong the 36:15
emotions start to come out it's a 36:17
practice yeah everything in our in our 36:19
body is a muscle including our emotions 36:21
yes and as much as like just like Jim 36:24
you cannot go and lift 25 kges of a 36:27
dumble on the first day at least not 36:30
most of the people right so you build up 36:32
your strength you build up your activity 36:34
and your body starts getting acquainted 36:37
to it and start practicing and your 36:38
muscles start getting that memory and 36:40
you strengthen yourself the same way 36:42
your mind you need to practice things in 36:44
every smaller things you know it's like 36:46
if you're in a traffic jam and 36:48
somebody's cutting you you should not be 36:51
you know swearing at that person it's 36:53
okay he's not going really fly away it's 36:55
okay maybe he's facing some issues 36:59
personally let him take over how much 37:01
are you going to you know how much delay 37:03
are you getting yeah having said that it 37:05
is so important to draw a fine line what 37:07
that you are understanding but you 37:11
should not be treated as a doormat yes 37:13
yeah so when you people there are a lot 37:16
of times that people start treating you 37:18
as a doormat taking you as for it 37:19
granted because when we say these things 37:21
that oh you should understand the other 37:23
women take it to another extreme yes 37:25
coming back and striking a balance no 37:27
you don't need to go into any extreme 37:29
just stay in moderation you need to 37:31
respect other people while other people 37:34
also respect you of course yeah so it's 37:35
all about 37:37
practice okay so there are two things 37:39
that I want to talk to you about but 37:41
before I forget um you mentioned that uh 37:42
your Ted Talk addressed charity being 37:46
one of the selfish thing please tell us 37:48
more about that oh I love this 37:50
um okay when you give let's say 10 dams 37:54
to somebody that okay you go have tea 37:58
yes that person will smile at you but 38:01
honestly search in your heart that when 38:04
you're giving charity to somebody okay 38:07
be it 10 dams 20 dams or 20,000 dams you 38:09
are giving it because you feel nice of 38:13
course at the end of the day okay so I 38:15
feel that I'm doing a very selfish deed 38:18
but it is for good and I encourage 38:21
people to selfish in that be selfish in 38:24
that way because you are creating a 38:26
happiness quotient there you are making 38:30
the other person happy you're making 38:33
yourself happy and this is how you're 38:34
going to multiply the happiness and you 38:36
raise the happiness quotient in your 38:37
family in your surroundings in your 38:39
community in your city and I say that in 38:41
Dubai it's similar that you know things 38:44
start getting easier if you see people 38:46
when they come to Dubai they get the 38:48
Dubai Vibe and they start getting more 38:49
chill more happy more helping more 38:51
respectful so that's what when you're 38:53
doing something you're not doing it for 38:56
the other person you're doing it for 38:58
yourself MH and I encourage people to be 38:59
selfish like that that's a beautiful way 39:01
of being selfish you know I don't have 39:03
you watch Friends yeah because Joey also 39:05
says something similar where he's like 39:08
even when it's a birthday when you're 39:09
buying present you're celebrating 39:11
someone else you do it because you feel 39:12
good because you've done something for 39:14
someone else but it is a beautiful thing 39:16
at the end of the day so it doesn't 39:18
matter that it is selfish but one thing 39:19
um going back to the conversation we 39:22
were having I would love for you to 39:23
share the Bison story to my audience as 39:25
well please if you can tell us that yeah 39:27
it is one of my favorite stories and a 39:29
bison or a bull that's what how people 39:31
understand it right so the story of a 39:33
bison or a bull so when there is a 39:35
snowstorm a bison goes head up into 39:37
those snowstorms why because they 39:40
instinctively know that when they face 39:42
the storm they will get out of it 39:45
faster the more you run away from it the 39:47
more it will follow you so I definitely 39:50
believe in facing your challenges in 39:52
life and getting done with them yeah the 39:55
shortest way is through 39:57
basically I love that okay final part of 39:59
our chat today so um I would say that if 40:03
we obviously are very happy to have you 40:07
here part of the podcast but if you had 40:08
to celebrate a woman in your life who 40:11
would it be 40:13
oh there are so many women I celebrate I 40:14
celebrate every woman in my life you 40:18
know it is uh cuz everyone brings their 40:21
own lesson to me and they teach me 40:24
something or the other other in their 40:26
own way but if I had to pick one right 40:27
now mhm I would celebrate one of my 40:31
nannies she's really really amazing I 40:34
love the way she takes care of my child 40:37
as her own and you know she just has 40:40
said it so many times that I don't have 40:43
one child I have three kids and you know 40:44
she counts my kids as her own but you 40:48
know she doesn't say it to make me feel 40:49
better uh I have seen her as not just a 40:51
staff member but now as my family member 40:55
how she takes care of she loves me she 40:58
loves my kids and uh how she's a team 41:00
player and she's not even you know 41:04
studied anything in management but she's 41:07
able to manage things and uh she's 41:09
living far away from her family and 41:12
she's managing over there her family as 41:14
well you know I really salute her and I 41:16
really love her so I would right now 41:18
celebrate her oh I I hope this message 41:20
gets to her because that's beautiful 41:23
yeah and for you we have a 41:25
bouquet to say a huge thank you and 41:27
there's a card in it from the previous 41:30
guest that wrote you a little message oh 41:32
wow and now you get to write the message 41:34
for the next guest thank you so much I 41:35
love this this is such a beautiful color 41:38
oh yeah it is isn't it it is and these 41:40
flowers are from lej so thank you for 41:42
sending that to us yeah thank you so 41:45
much no thank you my day no and now if 41:47
you have any party thoughts to share 41:50
with us anything you want to share 41:52
before we wrap up there are a few things 41:55
a few points I would say for everyone be 41:58
it um man or a woman it is very 42:01
important to keep dreaming and it is 42:04
very very important to keep your bucket 42:07
list I say it on repeat you do not have 42:09
to keep it time bound but keep your 42:12
bucket list alive so that's how you 42:14
achieve more and you become Larger than 42:17
Life oh wow and what's the next thing on 42:19
your bucket list oh you know more than 42:21
individual uh achievements now I feel 42:25
like empowering other people and that's 42:28
what's next on my bucket list that I 42:31
want to uh en incourage people to dream 42:33
and help them achieve their dreams and 42:37
one of the things that I have been 42:39
working on is getting a school to 42:40
educate children who cannot afford it 42:43
and it's work in progress It's been a 42:46
while now it's been a year that we're 42:48
working on it I hope that it comes to 42:49
our reality that's one of my dreams that 42:51
I think uh that's top right now amazing 42:53
well BAS on everything we've heard I 42:56
know you're going to make it happen I 42:58
hope so fingers crossed of course and 42:59
we're excited to see what else you do 43:01
son but thank you so much for being here 43:03
today and it was a lovely conversation 43:05
thank you so much it was fantastic being 43:07
here thank you 43:08

Lyrics & Translation

[English]
it is important to not sulk now you
could call me a monk who did not sell
her Ferrari even when you go in an
airplane when they're giving that you
know emergency uh talk they say when
there will be a oxygen mask you put on
yourself first and on your child later
just say I get to do this right I get to
go to work I get to see my friends how
much is it changing your life yeah no
how many zeros can you add if you're a
millionaire or a billionaire you should
not judge a book by its cover but the
reality is that people do judge a book
by its
cover hello and welcome back to the
podcast if you're new here my name is
Sheen I'm your host and today we're
joined by the wonderful Dr Sona Sergeant
saana is a doctor philanthropist
entrepreneur artist and she's the
director at the denu group and she's
here today to share with us everything
that she has learned through her
wonderful Journey hello s welcome thank
you so much for having me here Sheen
thank you how are you doing I'm so
excited to be here cuz you know it's
just every day you don't meet somebody
like you you've got literally the Sheen
in you you got the shine and Sparkle so
I'm really happy to exchange this energy
that's so sweet honestly when I was
doing my homework for this podcast and I
was watching all of your reals I was
like your energy is contagious it's very
rare to come across people who are
bubbly and happy all the time and I'm
really happy that you're actually like
this in person as well so very excited
for this conversation so tell us a
little bit about your journey oh well
where do we start it started with
medicine right should we go there um so
why did I want to be a doctor yes um
somehow because my family we have a
family of 36 doctors at the moment you
know so uh I like how you said at the
moment like there's more because this is
ongoing right so um when you have so
many healers in your family and and
coming from the Indian diaspora you
choose things which put you at a certain
level and it becoming a doctor is always
something which is respected throughout
you know and I believe that being a
Healer in any form it's amazing and I
chose to be a doctor cuz I always looked
up to my father who's an amazing doctor
and he was always a fun person very
handsome and still he was a doctor not a
boring person so I thought okay I can be
a doctor like him and I chose to be a
doctor um that's why I chose the
profession but then um you know while I
was becoming a doctor I also experienced
that there is so much need in the
Society of you
know expensive treatments which can be
somehow delivered to the patients in
some other way possible you know to make
it available to them so that pain was
always there I mean I it could be going
back to my upbringing and also being a
sensitive person I always saw that pain
in the society even while I was in my
college I used to use my scholarship to
you know help some poor patients and
just just get their treatments done and
pay for their labs and stuff so it was
always something which was there in my
personality and then I came back to
Dubai with my family and here it looked
very glitzy and glams which is usually
the facade which people see which is
there you know Dubai is amazing uh it's
literally a realistic Utopia uh that's
how I put to Dubai but the thing is that
when you look for you will still find
places where there are needs and you can
fulfill them so that's what I looked for
and I started working with the talisia
patients in the talisia center here in
the hospital uh where I felt that it is
not just that you need to help patients
monetarily you need to give them some
time and maybe create some you know art
events or do some classes with them or
for that matter just spread uh you know
some information about the awareness of
of the of the situation what people go
through when they're in talisia so
but and then through that journey I got
you know associated with the genetic
Disease Association here H which is led
by Dr Maria matar and um she's been
working very hard to you know clear out
um tmia which is a genetic disease uh
and I along with her somehow kept
working in creating the awareness so
that was one of the things that I was
working on while all of this was going
on I got married and uh um there is a
very important division in danub called
danub welfare center so when uh our
chairman dad he saw that I'm into
helping people he said s why don't you
also join Danny welfare center and
that's when I was on the cruise and
getting my makeup done and back I had
already set up in Dubai um a team which
were doing registrations for blue colled
workers for studies okay yeah so and
then that's how the journey with welfare
center started how we because this was
one of the dreams of our chairman ran
Sergeant to help blue colored workers
you know so and that's the Journey of
them getting the education and helping
them and there are so many other things
you know while you know there is no end
to helping people because it could be
monetarily it could be education it
could be just giving them a good vibe
you know so and that's how life is and
I've been through you know those stages
and I love to give that energy to people
the good energy and that's my journey oh
wow that's beautiful and what I love is
how many times you've pivoted a little
bit you know you're you're keeping to
what you're doing but you're also like
venturing into new aspects of work and
how do you approach this you know
because you went from obviously medical
field to business field and obviously
now with denu you do a lot of real
estate as well so how do you approach
any big pivots in your career okay so
let me start like this that we as women
we are
a form of God's light on Earth and this
was one of my recent posts on Instagram
as well that you know as women when we
are born we are born as Lakshmi into the
family we bring that good energy into
the family you know and then we give all
that amazing vibrancy into our family
you know you will see any any any house
who's got a daughter they have that you
know beautiful colors in their home and
any father would vouch for what I'm
saying over here and coming from the
Indian diaspora you know in India there
are uh something called a Davi and for
the certain audience who don't know what
it is a Davi is the idol of a goddess
which has 10 hands and each hand holds a
different tool in her hand you know one
could be it could be for me for example
it could be a pen it could be a book it
could be a music instrument it could be
a healing instrument like a stethoscope
or it could be you know love and kisses
for my family so we as women are born as
goddesses and each woman is a goddess
and we are all capable of doing a lot of
things so how I would say that I have
always wanted to do a lot of things in
life
and that thought of being Larger than
Life I have always kept it alive what is
larger than life you know our
limitations our thoughts are what limit
us right so when you open that cage you
become Larger than Life so if I want to
do something I always keep that bucket
list and I repeat it wherever I go that
I encourage people to keep that bucket
list if you don't want to put a timeline
to it don't put a timeline to it but
keep it the there will come a day where
you will accomplish it and that's what I
have done after becoming finishing my
med school you know I also did an MBA in
healthcare services where we also
studied business so that's why the
healthcare division in danub was started
and you know uh American Aesthetics is
that where I'm managing right now uh
which is uh you know Under the Umbrella
of plastic surgery everything comes as
you know aesthetic transformation over
there uh I call it also as a happiness
Center cuz you know you come in and get
yourself fixed and you look you feel
good you look good you know so that's
what I have been uh why should we put a
limitation of our career brand onto our
uh expertise or to anything that we
choose to in life I I say we are
Limitless I agree I agree but I love
that so you see the way you talk about
this it makes me feel so empowered but
it's just how I I get it right it's
realistically we all know what we want
to do and at some point you and I I
don't remember who said it I think it's
Mark Twain right who said it there are
two most important days of your life the
first one is when you're born and the
second one is when you figure out why
you were born and clearly you figured
out what your mission is on this planet
right but then and now walk us through
what a day-to-day with SAA looks like
I'm sure no two days are the same right
but but what does a traditional day
looks like so I want to add to something
that you said about Mark Twain there is
also something that I came across and it
has repeatedly been coming across in
front of me that uh we all live two
lives one is the life that was given to
us the second life that when we realize
that that is the only life that we have
and we live it to the fullest wow so
yeah you you got to keep your Ambitions
and that's what drives me my brother was
asking me the other day that you know s
you why do you need to do so many things
what is it that comes in your heart when
you wake up in the morning so I will
tell you so when I sleep in the night I
look at my calendar the next day this
helps me design my day for the next day
cuz I cannot just wake up and not have
anything to do this doesn't mean that I
have a lot of clutter in my head no
organization is definitely something
that helps you optimize your time and
resources so for me time management is
definitely something which I would put
as my first and foremost you know
strength and that also helps in not only
multitasking but also getting the best
out of your people and that's where I
come to my second strength which is my
team and my people right so when you
have the right team which doesn't just
Dawn upon you know you have to create
that team it takes time to have that
team with you where you have a sync
where you have similar thoughts and also
you Empower them you know so be it my
from my home if it is my staff or my
nannies you know or my driver or my
house manager you know you it is it is
very important to have that sync of
thoughts communication and understanding
between the team and also to share a
good energy yeah so you give some you
get some you know so that's one thing
from the home and coming to work again
it's the same story that that the team
needs to feel that ownership you know so
and how does that come it comes from Top
to bottom and then from bottom to up mhm
so that's what it goes when time
management and team is important for me
and that's what helps me so if I slept
yesterday I saw my calendar for today
what I need to do and then I wake up
early morning I go to my sons cuz they
sleep in the other room the boys uh I
wake them up they go go to their shower
to get ready for the school then I go to
my daughter I wake her up get her uh to
go get into the shower and then come
back uh meanwhile I'm coming back Adel
is up yeah so all of them are up and I
see the daddy's already in the swimming
pool mom's almost going to wake up so
all our family lives together right so
and then um we all have breakfast
together and everyone runs away to their
work you know so ad has to go to early
morning gym and then he has his own
hectic day uh we say hello hi goodbye
and then Happy good day and then I rush
to my gym then from gym I run to my work
and then by the time it's 5:30 is is
when uh my clock in my head starts
sticking that okay now is the time when
my children need me cuz I need to put
them to bed early too so I rush home and
then um you know spend some quality time
with them swimming or playing or just
you know enjoying and uh By the time
it's 8:00 they're tucked in bed oh wow
and that's the time when we party uh if
there are any occasions you know usually
the formal events and just friend visits
Etc that's also post8 so you know it's
just like in the time and people and you
get S days a week and 24 hours a day so
how the best you can get out of it you
know that's how what it is wow I love
that and I think you were telling me
this earlier as well that as a woman you
wear many hats but when you're wearing
one hat you're fully focused in that hat
right and I think I love how your days
basically split in you being kind of
like the daughter-in-law and then the
woman at work and then the mom and then
you're being the fun sa in the and and
you you got to you know I believe that
it is important to not sulk of course
you know a lot of times I come across
people who are like oh my God another
party yeah no it's a blessing to have a
party you're blessed to have friends who
are wanting you to join them and have
fun with you you know or for that matter
oh my God I have to go to work again no
it's a blessing to be busy you know
we're we're so blessed that we have work
we have people to meet we have positive
energy you know everything is flowing in
the right direction so so it's very
important to get the right energy out of
your schedule you know and that also
Cascades down into all your teammates as
well so and we wear different hats I
think a lot of times uh I laugh at Adel
that which one are you going to meet
today which sun is coming which sun is
meeting you today so um yeah you wear
different hats and when you are living
in the moment you know life is also
about that balance so I have to also
struggle sometimes in in the sense that
I'm living in the moment but at the same
time my next schedule is also there so
we are capable of doing a lot of things
and that's where we Shuffle between the
hats and I forget who person which
person I am after this because I have to
switch my roles yes so if I'm painting
I'm an artist and I'm in that zone it's
a trance and that's how I will be able
to deliver fully in that role you know
so yeah and then you switch the
painting's done okay now the next step
what are you going to do okay food time
you're hungry the more uh I say that if
you're eating well you're drinking your
water well you're taking the right
nutritions and if you're working out MH
that also takes away 80% of your issues
in life yes you know so I propagate I
say it out loud and I repeated it that
it is very important for everybody and
especially for women to take care of
themselves cuz you are the backbone of
the family exactly I agree and I love
what you talked about the mindset being
so important into to everything because
that's how you start your day and it
impacts the rest of your day however you
approach everything and I love I heard
this somewhere where it says instead of
saying oh my God I have to go to work I
have to do this just say I get to do
this right I get to go to work I get to
see my friends yeah and it's a change of
just reframing of how you approach
everything instead of seeing it as I'm
forced to do this it's more that oh it's
a new opportunity for me exactly you
know like like Jim some people they
including my a lot of my family members
you know they're like oh this is such a
punishment this no why you're blessed
you're able to take some time out and
come to the gym and you have a trainer
and you're able to work out this you're
able to do this it's amazing you know
you should be thankful to God and once
you change that perspective when you
start loving going to the gym that's
when a lot of things change cuz it's a
chain of thoughts right it's not just
easier you yield better cuz everything
is in the mind and we are very capable
of taking control of mind you know and
the sooner you do that the better it is
cuz that's when you can really become
Larger than Life hey I love that now I
want to go back to what you were talking
about how your team is one of your
strengths right and I think this is one
thing especially as a woman leader uh it
becomes very important how you portray
yourself as a leader because there is
this very fine balance between being too
empathetic as a woman to your team and
also coming across as being too harsh
because you don't want to come across as
a woman so how do you strike this
balance so this is a fun thing I am also
learning from the Sharks I live with
which is rzan sajan and Adel sajan and
they are amazing leaders they have a lot
of things which are similar in them and
they have a lot of things which As
Leaders they are very different leaders
as well at the same time so some things
overlap and some things they bring very
unique so and for me um I bring my own
uh of course Essence as a person person
who is you know as a team leader but
also I learn from them CU they're
definitely amazing and they're they've
proven you know over time with their
track records so um it's it's a little
bit of a tug-of warar you know you do a
stick in carot um different leaders
different styles my leadership style is
more empathetic as you say but sometimes
it gets like okay now the delivery you
have to really you know put things into
point so as you with time and experience
it gets a little bit more easier to
deliver what you want so with our team
we have regular team meetings in that um
it is important to know what are the
challenges first we say that these are
our targets okay yes and we put
realistic targets which are time bound
of course in sales you got to put time
bound targets and then you discuss with
the team do you think it's achievable
you discuss with them and then say what
is it that you need as a tool to achieve
those okay while you take up the tools
ask them what will be the challenges you
might face and then we find out
Solutions you know sometimes on the spot
or sometimes on the go because some
things can be a strategy but to achieve
that point A to point B you need certain
tactics and tactics can change you know
so a lot of times we keep certain
strategies the main thing but of course
some things if you need to modulate we
change and if somebody's slacking you
need to see if it is a personal problem
or if it is a uh consistent issue and
they're not delivering out of being lazy
and sometimes what happens a chain is as
strong as the weakest link of course
okay so you need to really constantly
diagnose what is the issue happening and
if it is going to be a chronic issue
then you really need to strike it you
know and you can give a few chances
normally my number is three for the
chances and you give a few chances you
help the person to work uh it out but if
it doesn't work then it doesn't work
okay so you have to keep shuffling
between uh I don't like to do the higher
and fire so we I give a lot of chances
but the recent practice in business they
keep saying that the sooner the you fire
the better it is yeah so a lot of
business practices and leaders are doing
that as well because there is no time to
lose uh for me I am a little bit more
warm and I happen to give more chances
to people um because I am always you
know considerate about what's going on
behind this issue you know so that's
what my Approach is and um
after all of this uh besides the sales
it is very important you know in all of
danu and including my verticals as well
that we make sure that customer service
is a full package you know cuz One
customer a happy customer will bring in
two or three more happy customers or
probably even if it doesn't at least he
will come back you know uh while a sad
or unhappy customer can damage that same
image you know and a brand is built with
a lot of work over a period of time you
know uh if your number of negative
comments out of 1,000 the percentage is
smaller let's say 15 M you need to
address those but at least that number
should not go higher than like you know
a certain percentage so you need to
address the issues regularly it is very
important to be their handson um at the
same time you know it's it's just a
really good mix of things that you have
to be you know actively doing yeah wow I
love that thank you for taking us on
that little tour of your leadership and
how you work with the team and now of
course you're aom as well do you think
that plays a role in how you approach
business and approach your team now for
sure I one of the things that I say that
the you know men and a lot of women who
have not yet come to that stage you know
um it's important for me to share it
with them that becoming a mother really
opens up your heart uh to understanding
people more and especially now now that
I have more than one child uh it's a
community that I have in the house you
know and each one of them is different
they have their own personalities they
have their own choices and they have
their own ways and approach to different
things so it I knew it theoretically I
was trying to practice it in my life
earlier as well but now that it is there
in my house it just comes more naturally
to me to understand people more and you
know how what kind of approach should be
cut out to the to get the best out of
this person MH because in a team a team
is good as good as it Captain right so
if the captain is able to nurture the
talent in the team and get the best out
of that person you all perform well so
yes it has definitely helped me and um
uh it also helps me understand the women
who are having a family who are a part
of my team yes you know so we give them
a little bit of Leverage on that and we
understand them better and we help them
more you know so even though we always
have those rules to help women who are
pregnant or who are nursing or who have
kids so but becoming a mother it always
helps you know I mean it has helped me
definitely MH amazing so now I I want to
switch gear a little bit because you are
a little bit unique as a guest here and
I think most people who are watching or
listening will will think of you as
someone who has made it you know who is
doing well in life so if we were to look
at life through your lenses as someone
who's on the other side you know what
what is your relationship with money
okay so um as a person I'm very Sufi
okay and let me explain what a Sufi is
um uh I would be a Hermit otherwise if I
was not here and there was a time when I
really chose to really almost at the
verge of shaving my head and becoming a
monk oh wow so now you could call me a
monk who did not sell her her
Ferrari I love that so yeah and it's
funny that just yesterday I was having
this conversation with my husband that
he asked me that s uh would you become a
priest or a monk and I'm like ad when I
met you I was almost at the verge of
shaving my head and going to the
Himalayas you know so right there but it
is a bigger challenge to stay in this
world and strike a balance in these
worldly opportunities and Excel over
here while creating that peace in your
heart you know and that is a bigger
achievement and I would say that um you
can't achieve excellence and anything
cuz the end goal is God and Excellence
is only God but yes for sure I am always
actively working on that peace you know
which is most important and uh take on
money in today's day and age people
salute money they respect money they
would put a red carpet for money and
we've seen it you know it it happens
that there is a fun story about one
Saint in olden days in Persia uh that
when uh he was really respected by the
King at that time and the King sent some
robes and said that I would like to
invite you and I would like to host a
big feast in your honor okay and he said
he sent his acceptance and he said he
will be there then he was a big Saint
right so he was just in his sted clothes
and he went and when he was at the doors
of the of the big play Palace the people
at the the soldiers there they asked him
to stop and he said this is a big Feast
for a very big guest of the king what
are you doing here he said this is for
me the soldier laughed at him right and
then the saint went back and he wore his
golden robes and then he came and it was
he was really welcomed and then when he
was sitting with the King on the on the
feast table he started putting food into
his robes and the pockets and the Scurry
into his pocket and the king and
everybody the big people they were
really like what are you doing we we
would really like to know what you're
doing with all the respect to him he
said you know it was not me who was
invited it was my
robes oh wow yeah he's the C so so and
that was a big message and and it was
taken to the people that you know you
should not judge a book by its cover but
the reality is that people do judge a
book by its cover so yes money now that
I am a I would say a little wiser that
it is important but it should not be
something that you put forward as a
priority at the expense of your health
and your family's health MH it could be
mental health it could be physical
health but it is very important to to
earn money the right way to be ambitious
and money not only money it it come
there are a lot of things that you can
earn you can earn respect you can earn
your career you can earn you know there
are so many things that you earn with
time uh but money money I say that it is
not something that you should kill for
yes you should have the fire in you you
should have the ambition in you and keep
dreaming keep working towards it but it
should not be at the expense of your
mental health yeah and with money as
well you always reach a point where now
it's just extra money right how much is
changing your life many yeah no how many
zeros can you add let's say if you're a
millionaire or a billionaire there comes
a point where you you need to have
certain um uh points in life where you
want to help people you want to help
your family you want to work on mental
health of yourself your family your
friends and then your community gets
bigger you know so when if you see
anybody who has made it in life I always
look up to my uh you know father-in-law
and my husband you know but when I look
at them I know I see them so closely
they did not just land on top of the
mountain they have worked their way up
and that work is not just hard work in
terms of going to the office and getting
the work done there is a lot that comes
you know like taking care of your
friends you know as a leader I say this
story a lot of times that rzan sajun we
live together okay when he wakes up in
the morning he goes to his swimming he
does his yoga he meets his family which
is us and his mother who we live
together uh then he goes for his work he
comes late at night comes back has the
dinner and or sometimes skips the dinner
and goes to meet his friends who are
hosting a birthday or a wedding or
anything so he makes sure that his
friends also get their due respect and
time and then he comes back late in the
uh night and then wakes up early in the
morning and then the grind is there so
it's like the sun MH you know so the sun
is constantly working if we can't see
also that sun is working right so for as
an individual as well I always say that
even if you're sleeping you're sleeping
for something good the next day you're
sleeping to revive yourself you know so
if you put that energy in you that you
want to be productive in your sleep you
want your body to recover you want your
energy to recover the next day you will
be better and you will perform better
you know so and that's the example of
rwan sjun that he and I'm following
those footsteps as well and I have that
energy too that if I'm sleeping I know
that I want to rest now that my CS
recover my energy recovers and tomorrow
is a productive day again and I want to
be the best of myself you know so and
that's these energies together you know
creating your team caring for your team
caring for your family your friends all
together this all counts as your riches
MH oh yes wow that's incredible you you
mention your family quite a lot which I
love by the way but what would you say
is the main learning for you um let's
say Obviously personally I'm sure there
are many many many
but professionally when you you joined
this big family business what was the
mean learning for you mean learning
there are two things really really
important for life for your you would
call it success or what i' say your
relationships and your
Communication in my the family that I
live in in the leadership that I see and
the what I follow not only in my family
but as you know leaders of Dubai you
know it is so important to have the
right way of communication and the right
time of communication as well you know
it is important to act in the right time
if it is urgent you do it now there
there if you want to make a phone call
or if you want to reply to a WhatsApp or
an email you know you need to give the
right time if it is emergency you need
to call you know so to communicate it is
the strength of a person and to
communicate the right way to the right
person to in the right time and of
course this is also related to
relationships and main maintaining your
relationships that every relationship
you need to give its respect and time to
it m yeah wow it could be a relationship
with your client it could be with your
family it could be with your friends it
could be with you know your team anybody
and at any level of the hierarchy
relationship and communication that's
the key I love that well now that we're
talking about relationship this just
popped up into my mind we're going to
talk about relationship with yourself
now for a minute um if I were to ask you
on a happiness scale from 0 to 10
where's saana today oh I'm always 10 and
above ooh love that how no but I I have
to say this there are days yes uh it
could be related to my hormones or it
could be related to certain challenges
in life I try to be 10 and above but
it's it should not go to toxic
positivity of course not you know and a
lot of times when we post oh this and
that on positive stuff on Instagram
people don't see that they are
challenges that we meet as well and the
every day every day we find something or
the other as a small or big challenge
you know it could be just an order
waiting to be received yes and you get
impatient you know so self focus is as a
girl I say it is really really important
because uh instinctively we are
givers and uh we find more happiness in
giving and one of my TED Talks I also
said that charity and loving someone
these are the two most selfish things
that we do ooh let's talk about that
yeah we will come to that but happiness
and self focus is so important CU as
women we are the backbones of our family
you know and if we don't take care of
ourselves who will take care of the
others even when you go in an airplane
when they're giving that you know
emergency uh talk they say when there
will be a oxygen mask you put on
yourself first and on your child later
even in the video they show that the
child also should come later cuz if you
don't have the oxygen you will not be
able to help the other one also so there
are two people being damaged there so if
as a woman of the house as a girl you
know you need to really really take care
of yourself and taking care is I start
with
food food water and
sleep I'm not saying you need to sleep
10 hours a day I'm not even saying if
you don't if you are not able to sleep 8
hours a day do 6 hours but sleep at the
right time at the same time every day so
that your circadian rhythm comes into
place place and wake up at the same time
that's what is going to set your
hormones in place cuz we are evolved
beings you know and it's not even a joke
when we are a 2.0 version yeah and uh we
are not taking care of we are such
blessed beings we need to take care of
ourselves and once this is in place you
need to then start working on let's say
yoga or pilate or gym I say even half an
hour of any workout even if it is brisk
walking you know if you do that that
another you know you've done another B
of your thing when you're healthy you
perform better at work you when you
perform better at work you get better
money you get better confidence you get
you know everything just starts coming
full circle and you come back home
happier you know so everything starts
with your
health uh sometimes people just start
buying makeup and just covering things
up I like a little bit of makeup it's
nice you know but it should not be
something as a coverup yes you know you
need to to be glowing from inside from
your soul okay when you're healthy
mentally and physically the glow comes
out the confidence comes out and you're
able to help other people as well so
happiness and self-care is really really
important I put it as now my top
priority I love that but when you said
sometimes it goes a little bit down
lower than 10 but what is your approach
in general with challenges in life
whenever there's a challenging part
whether it's personal or professional
how do you deal with it so challenges
come different scales small big large
extra large or extra small
ex yes but you need to see what is the
problem so in medicine they teach you a
disease diagnosed well is half soled you
know so your prognosis is half already
fixed when you diagnose the disease
properly so if you know what the problem
is so when I face a problem my first
exercise mentally and now it's a
practice so what is it that I see what
is exactly the problem and can I define
it can I classify it you know and if I
need to delegate it to someone what is
it that is needed to do right now um
sometimes people say oh it's easier said
than done so one of the things one time
um I faced was my dad he had an issue a
health issue in the in the night 3:00 my
mom called me and she said we've called
an ambulance
I jumped while I was on the phone I
changed my clothes and in the night 3:00
what do you do Adel was not at home so I
don't know what to do okay I while I was
getting out of the car I called my one
of my male servant who I know is a
responsible person I said I'm going to
my mom's house if there is anything I
will call you so please keep your phone
on on and one one of the nannies I told
the same thing because I need at least
if one will fail the second one then I
called my secretary I know she will
respond I said this is the emergency if
needed I'll call you she said okay on
the way cuz there was no other male
person I called one of my relative cuz I
know he would respond you know you need
to have your brains your head on your
shoulder even in emergency think cuz I'm
speeding I need to keep my cameras also
and I should not be jumping at radar and
you know stuff like that in time I was
there the ambulance had reached I had
reached luckily nothing was such a big
damage but he was taken to the hospital
and everything but I was really proud of
myself that I had my head on shoulders
and I was not balling on the way or
something like thatz so that was the
thing that proved to myself that my head
will be on my shoulders in any emergency
so it is so important in any kind of
issue that you face that you need to
know what is the problem and what are
the steps you need to do in that moment
to solve it and then you see later on
what you can do and furthermore you know
so that okay my dad needs to take care
of himself and the diet and gym and this
and that what all but you need to know
in that moment what you need to do and
what are the following steps I try to do
that I like that so just like keeping
your emotions under control while you're
dealing with the problem yes and I think
that's the challenge that most people
struggle with including me right
whenever something goes wrong the
emotions start to come out it's a
practice yeah everything in our in our
body is a muscle including our emotions
yes and as much as like just like Jim
you cannot go and lift 25 kges of a
dumble on the first day at least not
most of the people right so you build up
your strength you build up your activity
and your body starts getting acquainted
to it and start practicing and your
muscles start getting that memory and
you strengthen yourself the same way
your mind you need to practice things in
every smaller things you know it's like
if you're in a traffic jam and
somebody's cutting you you should not be
you know swearing at that person it's
okay he's not going really fly away it's
okay maybe he's facing some issues
personally let him take over how much
are you going to you know how much delay
are you getting yeah having said that it
is so important to draw a fine line what
that you are understanding but you
should not be treated as a doormat yes
yeah so when you people there are a lot
of times that people start treating you
as a doormat taking you as for it
granted because when we say these things
that oh you should understand the other
women take it to another extreme yes
coming back and striking a balance no
you don't need to go into any extreme
just stay in moderation you need to
respect other people while other people
also respect you of course yeah so it's
all about
practice okay so there are two things
that I want to talk to you about but
before I forget um you mentioned that uh
your Ted Talk addressed charity being
one of the selfish thing please tell us
more about that oh I love this
um okay when you give let's say 10 dams
to somebody that okay you go have tea
yes that person will smile at you but
honestly search in your heart that when
you're giving charity to somebody okay
be it 10 dams 20 dams or 20,000 dams you
are giving it because you feel nice of
course at the end of the day okay so I
feel that I'm doing a very selfish deed
but it is for good and I encourage
people to selfish in that be selfish in
that way because you are creating a
happiness quotient there you are making
the other person happy you're making
yourself happy and this is how you're
going to multiply the happiness and you
raise the happiness quotient in your
family in your surroundings in your
community in your city and I say that in
Dubai it's similar that you know things
start getting easier if you see people
when they come to Dubai they get the
Dubai Vibe and they start getting more
chill more happy more helping more
respectful so that's what when you're
doing something you're not doing it for
the other person you're doing it for
yourself MH and I encourage people to be
selfish like that that's a beautiful way
of being selfish you know I don't have
you watch Friends yeah because Joey also
says something similar where he's like
even when it's a birthday when you're
buying present you're celebrating
someone else you do it because you feel
good because you've done something for
someone else but it is a beautiful thing
at the end of the day so it doesn't
matter that it is selfish but one thing
um going back to the conversation we
were having I would love for you to
share the Bison story to my audience as
well please if you can tell us that yeah
it is one of my favorite stories and a
bison or a bull that's what how people
understand it right so the story of a
bison or a bull so when there is a
snowstorm a bison goes head up into
those snowstorms why because they
instinctively know that when they face
the storm they will get out of it
faster the more you run away from it the
more it will follow you so I definitely
believe in facing your challenges in
life and getting done with them yeah the
shortest way is through
basically I love that okay final part of
our chat today so um I would say that if
we obviously are very happy to have you
here part of the podcast but if you had
to celebrate a woman in your life who
would it be
oh there are so many women I celebrate I
celebrate every woman in my life you
know it is uh cuz everyone brings their
own lesson to me and they teach me
something or the other other in their
own way but if I had to pick one right
now mhm I would celebrate one of my
nannies she's really really amazing I
love the way she takes care of my child
as her own and you know she just has
said it so many times that I don't have
one child I have three kids and you know
she counts my kids as her own but you
know she doesn't say it to make me feel
better uh I have seen her as not just a
staff member but now as my family member
how she takes care of she loves me she
loves my kids and uh how she's a team
player and she's not even you know
studied anything in management but she's
able to manage things and uh she's
living far away from her family and
she's managing over there her family as
well you know I really salute her and I
really love her so I would right now
celebrate her oh I I hope this message
gets to her because that's beautiful
yeah and for you we have a
bouquet to say a huge thank you and
there's a card in it from the previous
guest that wrote you a little message oh
wow and now you get to write the message
for the next guest thank you so much I
love this this is such a beautiful color
oh yeah it is isn't it it is and these
flowers are from lej so thank you for
sending that to us yeah thank you so
much no thank you my day no and now if
you have any party thoughts to share
with us anything you want to share
before we wrap up there are a few things
a few points I would say for everyone be
it um man or a woman it is very
important to keep dreaming and it is
very very important to keep your bucket
list I say it on repeat you do not have
to keep it time bound but keep your
bucket list alive so that's how you
achieve more and you become Larger than
Life oh wow and what's the next thing on
your bucket list oh you know more than
individual uh achievements now I feel
like empowering other people and that's
what's next on my bucket list that I
want to uh en incourage people to dream
and help them achieve their dreams and
one of the things that I have been
working on is getting a school to
educate children who cannot afford it
and it's work in progress It's been a
while now it's been a year that we're
working on it I hope that it comes to
our reality that's one of my dreams that
I think uh that's top right now amazing
well BAS on everything we've heard I
know you're going to make it happen I
hope so fingers crossed of course and
we're excited to see what else you do
son but thank you so much for being here
today and it was a lovely conversation
thank you so much it was fantastic being
here thank you
