[Music] 00:00
if you were anything like me growing up 00:01
you absolutely hated rules no TV until 00:03
you finish your homework don't run with 00:06
scissors rules were an assault to our 00:07
free will and we vowed that when we grew 00:09
up we would do things differently but as 00:12
it turns out maybe our parents were 00:14
right right now 00:16
[Music] 00:19
there's one rule in particular the 2-day 00:22
rule that I can credit to being the most 00:25
influential in my own personal life it 00:27
helped me put more than 20 pounds of 00:29
muscle on my scrawny 130 pound frame and 00:31
it empowered me to create a consistent 00:33
exercise habit over the past eight years 00:35
the decision which according to 00:37
researchers has extended my life 00:39
expectancy by at least three point four 00:41
years fingers crossed I don't be hit by 00:43
a loss so what's the 2-day rule how has 00:45
it helped me and why are rules so 00:49
effective at helping us change our lives 00:50
I'm gonna be talking about that in 00:53
today's video but first thanks to my 00:54
sponsors Skillshare has made this video 00:56
possible Skillshare is an online 00:58
learning community with thousands of 01:00
classes covering tons of different 01:02
creative and entrepreneurial skills I'll 01:03
talk about one of my favorites at the 01:05
end of this video so let's first talk 01:07
about what makes rules so effective you 01:09
see our brains are really good at 01:12
thinking but they are terrible at 01:14
remembering that's why it's easy to get 01:16
excited about building a new habit and 01:18
just as easy if not easier to completely 01:20
forget about it the next day you know 01:23
what I mean if you've ever had a 01:24
brilliant business idea right before bed 01:25
but decided not to write it down you 01:28
felt the pain of waking up the next 01:30
morning scrambling through your brain 01:31
trying to find the file with the idea on 01:33
it but it's gone it was an idea that was 01:35
so brilliant it would have changed the 01:38
world and you forgot you just you didn't 01:40
write it down 01:43
our brains they possess amazing 01:44
computing powers in split-second 01:46
decision times but we're biologically 01:48
wired to get distracted how many of us 01:50
struggle with addictions from social 01:53
media to alcohol and sex left to our own 01:54
devices we will pretty much do anything 01:57
but the right thing or at least the 01:59
thing that we want to do if we never set 02:01
rules for yourself we're simply letting 02:04
our current feelings desires and mood 02:06
move our path out of a line 02:08
if we decide to take control of our 02:10
lives if we focus on what we value most 02:12
and we create a set of rules to live by 02:14
they can be a powerful way to regain 02:17
control of both our personal and 02:19
professional lives in a way that we 02:21
could never imagine no one who has ever 02:24
achieved success as an author filmmaker 02:25
or an athlete has gotten there without 02:28
setting some kind of rule or system for 02:30
their lives to make it as a pro to write 02:32
a book or to even build a habit requires 02:35
overcoming what Stephen Pressfield calls 02:36
the resistance in his book the war of 02:38
art Stephen writes resistance is the 02:41
most toxic force on the planet it is the 02:43
root of more unhappiness than poverty 02:46
disease and erectile dysfunction to 02:47
yield to resistance to forms or spirit 02:50
it stunts us and makes us less than we 02:52
are and were born to be resistance shows 02:54
up in many forms from procrastination 02:59
doubt the voice in the back of your head 03:01
asking who the hell are you to do this 03:03
the antidote is consistency showing up 03:05
day after day and putting in the work 03:09
and make no mistake it is a war so early 03:11
on in high school and college no matter 03:16
how much I tried I found it so difficult 03:18
to build a habit of going to the gym or 03:21
working out consistently to put it in 03:24
perspective I was a pretty scrawny kid I 03:26
weighed about a hundred and twenty 03:28
pounds later in high school when I was 03:30
around a senior and throughout college 03:32
at least the first couple years I 03:35
weighed 130 pounds I kept trying to eat 03:36
as much food as I could to build up a 03:40
consistent workout routine but nothing 03:42
worked it always seemed like something 03:44
was getting in the way you know I'd get 03:45
busy with classes I had to prepare for 03:47
finals I would just be too hungover and 03:50
I would make every excuse possible but 03:52
then I decided that all these excuses 03:55
were complete [ __ ] if I couldn't 03:56
commit to at the very least 30 minutes 03:59
of exercise a day then I was the problem 04:01
after all this was my life this was my 04:04
health and my future after eight years 04:07
of attempting to put weight on ever 04:09
since high school and failing miserably 04:11
I implemented the two day rule it's very 04:12
simple I would not allow myself to take 04:16
off more than one day in a row for some 04:18
kind of 04:20
Gau be at the gym jog or hike I had to 04:21
do some kind of physical activity at 04:24
least every other day this allowed me 04:26
the time to take days off as I needed it 04:29
often multiple days a week but it also 04:31
kept me committed to my goal and most 04:33
importantly it prevented me from falling 04:35
into a slump and neglecting my health 04:37
for weeks or even months at a time it's 04:39
so easy to give ourselves a break which 04:41
we need saying just this one time 04:43
but then that turns into the next five 04:46
days six days seven days and on I took 04:48
the two day rule to heart and promised 04:51
myself that I'd stick to it as much as I 04:53
possibly could unless I was literally 04:55
sick or there was something completely 04:57
out of my control that prevented me from 05:00
going to the gym or from getting a 05:01
workout in whether I was tired whether I 05:03
was sore from yesterday's workout or 05:06
even if I was hungover I would get my 05:09
ass out of bed and I would get to the 05:11
gym even if I would just get a 05:13
ten-minute cardio session and even if I 05:15
went to the gym and I worked out for 05:17
five minutes that was enough for me to 05:20
feel like I had actually made progress 05:23
that I had followed through with that 05:25
commitment to myself within six months I 05:26
had built more muscle mass than the past 05:29
six years I'd broken through a wall and 05:31
found it more difficult to skip a day of 05:33
working out than it was to actually go 05:35
that was over ten years ago and I still 05:37
stay committed to this rule that's not 05:40
to say that I'm perfect that's not to 05:42
say that I don't often mess up and I 05:44
don't fall back and fail to follow 05:46
through with the 2-day rule that's just 05:48
part of life I don't think there's any 05:50
sentient being on earth that would be 05:52
able to continue through with the 2-day 05:53
rule indefinitely for years and years on 05:55
end but for me it's helped me stay 05:58
committed eighty to ninety percent of 06:00
the time when I follow through with this 06:02
rule and I keep it going in my everyday 06:04
life I find that I'm healthier I'm more 06:06
alert it acts as a keystone habit a 06:09
ripple effect to other habits in my life 06:12
so if I can get my ass out of bed and go 06:14
to the gym I'm more likely to eat better 06:16
I'm more likely to get better sleep I'm 06:18
gonna feel more energized throughout the 06:20
day I just know that this one habit 06:22
alone has changed my life in ways that 06:24
it's it's hard to explain if you're able 06:27
to remove the childhood baggage of rules 06:29
you can use them to your advantage 06:32
life there's a misconception that rules 06:34
limit what you can do in life that they 06:36
hold us back in some way but the truth 06:38
is that if you set the right rules for 06:40
yourself based on what you value most 06:41
will help you to live a life that you've 06:42
always imagined I was able to make this 06:44
video with the health of Skillshare 06:48
recently I took a class by my friend and 06:50
productivity master Thomas Frank if you 06:53
often feel unproductive or disorganized 06:55
this class will change your life it 06:57
helped me to completely rethink how I 07:00
schedule my days set up my calendar and 07:01
get [ __ ] done 07:03
this isn't just about tips and tricks 07:04
this is about setting up a productivity 07:06
system that will help you be more 07:08
productive and more effective every day 07:09
or at least the days that you should 07:12
stick through with it maybe use the two 07:13
day rule for that skill chair is super 07:15
affordable with an annual subscription 07:17
it's less than ten dollars a month but 07:18
sign up today using the link in the 07:20
description and get a two month free 07:22
trial thanks for watching oh hey guys by 07:24
the way I'm gonna save this for the very 07:27
end I'm actually gonna hire an editor 07:28
thanks to sponsors like Skillshare I'm 07:30
now able to bring on some more people to 07:32
help me make my videos to help bring up 07:34
the quality to do some really cool stuff 07:36
so I'm in the process of looking for a 07:38
los angeles-based editor to work with me 07:41
on everything from feature-length 07:44
Netflix documentaries to the YouTube 07:46
videos I create videos that get tons and 07:48
tons of exposure if you want to be able 07:50
to work alongside me learn from me and 07:53

an editor and filmmaker my entire life 07:56
up your skills as well as make an impact 07:58
and touch the lives of millions of 08:00
people then go to Machiavelli comm slash 08:02
