ah let's read some comments on my 00:07
apartment tour it's been a while i need 00:09
my reading glasses 00:10
for the same money i have a five bed 00:14
three and a half bath that's my monthly 00:16
mortgage payment i feel sorry for her 00:18
wow 1900 a month for glory i've got a 00:19
house in indiana that is five times wait 00:21
a gosh darn second 00:23
is new york city 00:25
expensive 00:28
[Music] 00:33
hello this is taylor i am a 24 year old 00:41
working and living here in new york city 00:43
specifically in the most expensive 00:45
borough of the mall manhattan wow i'm an 00:47
ex-management consultant and right now 00:49
working as a full-time youtuber that 00:51
being said i am starting another 00:53
corporate job in just a couple months so 00:54
i'm excited to be filming this video 00:56
right now while my expenses are a bit 00:58
higher and i'd say more interesting 01:00
anyway i have got some ground rules i 01:02
want to cover for this video but first 01:03
let's get started with day one 01:05
[Music] 01:08
oh 01:19
it's grabbing my breakfast bagel this is 01:22
how you know you're in new york this is 01:23
the highest price for a pack of 01:25
strawberries that i've ever seen 01:27
anywhere these corner stores in new york 01:28
also known as bodegas can really get you 01:30
they're super convenient but typically 01:32
extremely expensive i don't recommend 01:34
buying groceries in bulk at places like 01:36
this sometimes i'll come down i'll get 01:37
my breakfast bagels here and some other 01:39
things that are affordable like no 01:41
matter where you go like a loaf of bread 01:42
but yeah you're definitely paying for 01:43
convenience with corner markets like 01:45
this 01:46
[Music] 01:49
thank you so much 01:53
[Music] 01:54
and now for a late night snack 02:13
tried and true i said i wasn't gonna 02:16
change my behavior for this video 02:18
peanut butter jelly 02:20
friendly reminder that pb js are 02:22
delicious by the way 02:24
[Music] 02:25
so good all right a couple ground rules 02:28
for this video because i'm taking it 02:30
probably a little too seriously round 02:32
rule number one we are going to 02:33
calculate my expenses using accrual 02:34
basis accounting meaning we will 02:36
recognize my expenses once they are 02:38
consumed i'm doing it this way because i 02:40
watch a ton of these what i spend in a 02:41
week videos and a bunch of people will 02:43
go out to let's say costco buy a ton of 02:44
food in bulk it'll cost them 500 bucks 02:47
great way to save money by the way but 02:48
i'm always like you just bought a 02:50
month's worth of groceries you do not 02:51
spend that every single week and in this 02:53
video i'm aiming to get as accurate a 02:54
picture as possible into what i spend on 02:56
average every single week so using 02:58
accrual basis accounting i will only 03:00
count the expenses once they're 03:02
officially consumed so using that 03:03
example i would not count that whole 03:05
costco bill i would only count the 03:06
portion of it that i consumed this week 03:08
does that make sense ground rule number 03:09
two no cheating i did not change my 03:11
spending behavior whatsoever for the 03:13
sake of this video somewhat to my dismay 03:14
after watching the footage back but 03:16
final ground rule i won't go so far as 03:18
to adjust my expenses in the case of an 03:19
irregular purchase but i will flag it to 03:21
you if i buy something that i would not 03:24
normally buy on a weekly basis and 03:26
there's a big one in this video you'll 03:27
see all right now that i have formalized 03:29
this video concept to the point of 03:30
boring my entire audience let's continue 03:32
before you click off shall we 03:34
hello guys day two right now i'm walking 03:37
to a coffee shop to meet one of my 03:39
friends who's actually a youtuber you 03:41
guys probably know him and we are going 03:42
to the coffee shop that screams new york 03:44
blogger more than any other coffee shop 03:47
and you guys may or may not be wondering 03:49
maybe you don't know this about me but i 03:51
actually do live a very frugal lifestyle 03:52
for new york standards it's all relative 03:54
so you might be wondering taylor what do 03:56
you think of these five six seven dollar 03:57
coffees i do have thoughts on them we're 04:00
gonna get into it but first let's go buy 04:02
one 04:04
and then we'll talk about it you can 04:05
tell it's gonna be hot today it's very 04:06
balmy already and it's only 10 am 04:08
snipes 04:15
[Music] 04:17
all right just got coffee what's up guys 04:24
you guys probably know him new york city 04:26
aficionado thank you yeah we just had 04:27
some good coffee talking youtube talking 04:30
finance talking life it's got a lot of 04:32
exciting things ahead of time 04:34
okay so what do i think of going out to 04:35
buy coffee i think you should smash the 04:37
like button for zero dollars okay 04:39
actually going out to buy coffee is an 04:40
expense that gets talked about a lot 04:42
within the personal finance sphere and i 04:44
get it you know it does add up but even 04:46
if you're buying one every single day it 04:48
is typically not a major expense 04:50
compared to housing or transportation 04:51
for most people i mean that's obvious my 04:53
point is if you want to make a real dent 04:55
in cutting down on expenses i would 04:57
start with those two categories to the 04:58
extent that you can nonetheless i get 05:00
why it's a hot fun issue so here are my 05:01
thoughts on going out to buy coffee i 05:03
typically do not do it but when i do i 05:05
see it as paying rent to be at that 05:07
coffee shop but what do i even mean by 05:09
that so when i go out to buy coffee it's 05:11
always for one of two reasons the first 05:12
reason is if i'm out and about on the 05:14
town or i'm going out to meet a friend 05:16
to catch up talk life talk business 05:18
whatever it is usually that's at a 05:20
coffee shop in which case of course i'm 05:21
gonna buy a coffee at that cafe you know 05:23
i'm not gonna bring coffee that i made 05:24
from home to a coffee shop it'd be kind 05:26
of weird the second reason is if i leave 05:28
my lovely home office my apartment here 05:29
and go elsewhere to get work done 05:31
because i usually am more productive 05:33
when i switch up my environment to get 05:35
work done elsewhere then i will buy a 05:36
coffee at that coffee shop which i 05:38
really see as paying rent to sit there 05:40
and work for several hours and even 05:41
still when i buy them i tend to avoid 05:43
the super expensive artisanal coffee 05:45
spots because it yeah it hurts my soul 05:47
to pay anything even close to six or 05:49
seven dollars for coffee i also think 05:51
that's ridiculous and the value 05:53
proposition is just not there for me 05:54
like blue bottle where i just met brett 05:56
i admittedly love the taste of that 05:57
coffee which is why i go every now and 05:59
then but that really is a treat my go-to 06:00
coffee shop where i get a lot of work 06:02
done is a place where the drip coffee is 06:04
three dollars and twenty cents which you 06:06
know still probably a high margin for a 06:07
drip coffee but it doesn't hurt my soul 06:09
to cough up three dollars and twenty 06:11
cents compared to a six or seven dollar 06:12
latte so that's when i do buy them but 06:14
every other time when i'm just working 06:16
from home i make my own coffee lately 06:17
i've been meeting a lot more people like 06:19
other content creators so i've just been 06:21
going out for coffee more often it's 06:22
also summertime so i'm just out more 06:24
conclusion here i don't think it's bad 06:25
to buy a coffee if it means you're 06:27
getting out of the house being 06:28
productive or meeting up with a friend 06:29
if you're just working from home though 06:31
i say just make your own that's my rule 06:32
of thumb but depends on your disposable 06:34
income and what you value anyway 06:35
speaking of buying coffee 06:37
[Music] 06:38
okay i did not need another coffee i 06:42
really didn't but i kind of see this as 06:44
paying rent to sit here and work for a 06:46
couple hours so anyway now talking about 06:47
irregular expenses i'm going to get my 06:50
hair cut we're going to talk about what 06:52
i think about expensive haircuts but it 06:54
is an irregularity i do it like 06:55
once 06:58
maybe twice a year you can see it's it's 06:59
gotten quite long 07:02
all right in route 07:03
city bikes one of the best ways to get 07:05
around the city just gotta be careful 07:07
probably not a good idea to film at the 07:08
same time 07:10
[Applause] 07:12
[Music] 07:14
cut for the first time in a minute she 07:22
did an amazing job if i may say so 07:25
myself anyway that was expensive or 07:27
expensive compared to 07:29
the things i usually spend my money on 07:31
it was 129 and then on top of that a tip 07:32
so it's coming out to this much but yeah 07:36
a good haircut it is something i 07:38
splurged on i'm not gonna lie i have got 07:39
my hair messed up a couple times going 07:41
to just super cheap places i know that's 07:43
not always the case you just have to 07:45
find the right person but um 07:46
i don't know once i got a little bit of 07:48
an expensive haircut i never went back 07:49
so what can i say 07:51
well hello eddie taylor here popping up 07:55
for just one minute to thank today's 07:57
sponsor acorns for those who have not 07:58
had the pleasure of hearing ashton 08:01
kutcher talk about it when he was an 08:02
early investor let me tell you about it 08:03
acorns is an app that helps people save 08:05
and invest in the background of their 08:07
life acorns is known to many for its 08:09
roundup feature which allows people to 08:11
round up each and every purchase to the 08:12
next dollar and invest that spare change 08:14
without even thinking about it for 08:16
example if you go out and buy an 08:18
overpriced coffee like i have a few 08:19
times this week for four dollars and 08:20
fifty cents acorns will round that up to 08:22
five dollars and invest that incremental 08:24
50 cents for you automatically in 08:26
addition to its more famous roundup 08:28
feature though acorns also has smart 08:30
deposit which allows you to 08:31
automatically save and invest a certain 08:33
percentage of your income and automatic 08:35
recurring investments which again allows 08:36
you to invest in the background of your 08:38
life and that's what i love about it you 08:40
don't need to know anything to start 08:41
it's great for beginners and for passive 08:43
investing over long periods of time 08:45
while giving you the option to 08:47
automatically input settings that help 08:48
save and invest for you it has 08:50
investment options for a number of cases 08:51
as well whether you're saving for 08:53
retirement for children or you just want 08:55
an acorns checking account so click the 08:57
link in my description for a 10 sign up 08:58
bonus investment and thank you acorns 09:01
for sponsoring this video just got back 09:02
from my haircut 09:04
i like it and i realized oh wait i 09:06
should probably eat something i got 09:09
hungry so anyway i'm not a nutritionist 09:10
obviously i say this because when things 09:13
get really really busy i skip meals it's 09:15
just kind of the first thing to go don't 09:17
do what i do it's not a good thing but 09:19
when i do eat i always get something or 09:21
not always i do try to 09:23
most the time get something fairly 09:25
substantial so you might say oh taylor 09:27
that's a salad normally i'd agree with 09:29
you however when i get salads i do try 09:30
to get at least three sources of protein 09:32
in there so i get it packed with chicken 09:34
mozzarella balls and garbanzo beans so 09:36
it actually sticks with me for a while 09:39
when i get a salad from sweet green i 09:40
also add quinoa to try to get some 09:42
complex carbs in there again not a 09:44
nutritionist but when i eat i do try my 09:46
best to make sure it's something that 09:48
sticks with me because that way if i do 09:50
end up skipping a meal it's not like 09:51
the worst thing ever i'm lucky in that i 09:54
don't get tired of eating the same exact 09:55
thing 09:57
[Music] 09:57
all right guys i just sat my booty in 10:00
this chair for seven hours straight all 10:02
right i rambled a bit here but i did 10:05
make an important point while filming 10:06
this video i had just got back from a 10:07
ton of travel i went to tel aviv and 10:09
egypt and amsterdam and usually when i 10:11
do a ton of traveling i just fall out of 10:13
my good habits in this case i didn't 10:15
have any real groceries in the fridge to 10:16
cook for myself aside from a few snacks 10:18
such as how to longer shelf life so i'm 10:20
just flagging that i know that my eating 10:22
habits in this video are whack normally 10:24
i cook for myself a lot more and it's 10:25
typically pretty healthy food but yeah i 10:27
also don't stick to three square meals 10:28
every single day i just eat when i get 10:30
hungry 10:32
[Music] 10:35
taylor here this is my friend 10:37
today we spent how much on this it's 10:39
almost twenty dollars for new york city 10:41
coffee 10:43
a little excessive on the real five 10:44
dollars and 72 cents for these two 10:45
things not too bad 10:47
i've done worse yeah i'm just ten dollar 10:49
coffee but the solution to this problem 10:51
is 10:54
make a lot of money 10:54
yes we're working on it so make sure to 10:56
subscribe so that way she can make more 10:58
money and buy more coffee 11:00
making a smoothie good way to get some 11:02
good nutrients in and 11:04
yep 11:07
a lot of bananas 11:09
[Music] 11:11
[Music] 11:19
at this point you might be wondering 11:23
taylor are you optimizing for taste 11:24
no i'm not i will add a little agave to 11:27
make it more sweet though and this will 11:30
help 11:31
well just found out this was completely 11:32
leaking 11:34
in my pantry that's that's just great 11:36
these tastes good 11:40
also i would put athletic greens in 11:43
there but this has enough of a taste 11:45
where it would overpower it a little bit 11:47
so 11:49
i'm not gonna do that 11:50
and that's it just kidding 11:51
[Music] 11:59
pretty good accent all right i just 12:04
filmed for two hours straight with a 12:05
little break in between so now i'm 12:07
hungry and i'm meeting a friend for a 12:09
drink in like 12:10
45 minutes so i need to eat i'm gonna 12:12
get my uge bet you can guess what it is 12:14
you guessed it the same exact salad 12:18
cajun chicken garbanzos mozzarella 12:20
tomatoes i'm a big fan 9.53 12:22
all right not using my gimbal so it's a 12:26
little shaky but 12:27
finished that salad 12:29
it was good now i'm going to meet my 12:31
friend 1000 yards for a drink 12:32
what's cooking good looking 12:35
look at you all suited up are you 12:40
impressed by my fashion very good i have 12:41
the same olders hey guys this is my 12:43
friend david what's up turtle gang 12:45
getting drinks david was an investment 12:47
banker now he's in private equity also 12:49
an ivy league swimmer and a dj you're 12:51
actually pretty cool 12:53
i try goodbye david 12:54
[Music] 12:56
hello it is 12:58
12 38 a.m i've been editing for 13:00
hours this is a long video 13:03
too long not this one but the one i'm 13:05
editing anyway got hungry again 13:07
and i'm a child but another pb j i got a 13:10
cheese stick that is something that i 13:13
actually had on hand i like my cheese 13:14
sticks i don't peel them like string 13:16
cheese i just bite them because i like 13:18
to be efficient and then i have a few 13:19
carrots left and hummus so i'm excited 13:22
to eat my childish little snack here 13:24
that it looks like a kindergartener's 13:25
lunchbox 13:28
good morning turtle gang day four i just 13:29
got up 13:32
i'm not wearing pants 13:33
but you can't say anything only second 13:35
day of making coffee at home i told you 13:37
guys i would flag too if anything in 13:38
this video was irregular and me going 13:40
out to get as many coffees as i have 13:43
this week is irregular i swear but yeah 13:44
those coffees happen because i'm meeting 13:47
new creators and meeting new people in 13:49
the city and that's just kind of a way 13:51
for us to to get together which makes 13:52
sense but anyway i just went on 13:54
instagram live for over an hour while 13:56
sipping my 13:58
i don't know how much this costs i'll do 14:00
the calculations afterwards cost this 14:01
much 14:03
coffee and uh it was so much fun follow 14:04
me on instagram if you're not at tay k 14:07
bell that way you can actually ask me 14:09
questions live and we can get to know 14:11
each other a little bit better but um 14:12
yeah i'm gonna do it more often that was 14:14
super fun anyway follow me over there 14:16
all right for the rest of the day i have 14:17
a uh 14:18
not an event but a thing at a friend's 14:20
house later at like 6 p.m and until then 14:22
i'm going to edit 14:24
that's it i'm just going to edit and 14:27
then i will eat lunch when i get hungry 14:28
got myself a hot steamy sandwich okey 14:32
dokey i edited until my computer died 14:35
and then i realized i was hungry it's a 14:38
good time i almost got that same salad 14:39
in fact had i not been filming this 14:42
video 14:43
i might have 14:45
but you guys inspire me 14:46
indirectly to get something ever so 14:48
slightly different i got this um 14:50
italiano sandwich it's really good i've 14:53
had it before it's filling too it's like 14:55
packed with chicken okay so like i 14:57
mentioned earlier i'm going to a 14:59
friend's thing tonight and there will be 15:00
food at that event so i won't have to 15:02
pay for that and i wondered should i 15:04
normalize that by saying i normally 15:05
don't have my dinners paid for but when 15:07
i think about it it happens probably 15:09
once a week where i end up going to 15:11
something where there's food so 15:13
i'm not gonna i'm not gonna normalize 15:16
that expense okay next expense is the 15:18
lift that i'm gonna take to this event 15:21
that i just got dressed for and normally 15:23
i would walk because it is close enough 15:24
but it's super hot and humid i don't 15:26
feel like being sweaty by the time i get 15:28
there and it's in times like these where 15:30
i just take the extra time to do some 15:31
more editing call an uber 15:32
don't show up sweaty it's just a nice 15:34
luxury to have sometimes anyway here's 15:36
my outfit i don't know if you care kinda 15:37
looks like a high-end dermatologist 15:39
that's that's what i feel like i look 15:41
like 15:42
[Music] 15:48
so this is something else i definitely 15:55
splurge on a bit and that is ubers we'll 15:56
talk about this more at the end but i do 15:58
definitely walk subway or bike as often 16:00
as possible but when it's a matter of 16:02
prioritizing my safety like taking a 16:03
subway or walking by myself late at 16:05
night i definitely just pay for the uber 16:07
and sometimes i take it if i want to 16:09
prioritize convenience as well but we'll 16:10
talk more about it at the end got home 16:12
from the event it was a lot of fun you 16:13
guys know the drill took a shower and 16:15
now midnight snack poo all of this 16:17
together is about this much and if 16:19
you're curious no i don't eat the hummus 16:21
by itself i dip the cheese stick in it i 16:23
don't know if that's much better than 16:25
eating it by itself but uh 16:26
anyway day five that'll be 30 000 16:28
all right already finished it but had a 16:32
breakfast bagel got a couple buddies 16:33
here what'd you get 16:35
just a buddy 16:37
look what we have over here yeah i got a 16:40
i got myself a cola brew nice excellent 16:42
choice 16:44
[Music] 16:45
hello guys it is day five today's a 16:47
friday but get this days one through 16:50
four that you've already seen it were 16:52
last week i filmed monday tuesday 16:53
wednesday thursday and then i had a 16:55
four-day wedding extravaganza for one of 16:57
my close friends on friday through 16:58
monday and my expenses on those four 17:00
days were just 100 abnormal so just 17:02
decided not to film it because it would 17:05
not be an accurate look into a typical 17:06
turtle week so i actually have not had 17:08
this salad in like a week even though to 17:10
you guys it might seem like i had it 17:12
yesterday and i missed my salad i missed 17:14
it so much i'm so happy to be with it 17:17
again 17:18
[Music] 17:21
the day has come i finally bought 17:25
protrudes i figure i've been here long 17:27
enough from all the traveling where just 17:29
my routines are totally messed up and i 17:31
don't want to live off that salad 17:32
anymore so i actually bought food but as 17:34
discussed i'm not counting the expenses 17:36
until they are 17:37
consumed i'll show you guys what i got 17:39
so you can see what i actually buy when 17:40
i do have good habits and buy groceries 17:42
okay rapid fire milk for my overnight 17:45
oats carrots strawberries these go hand 17:47
in hand sandwich bread and blackberry 17:49
jam because i love me a good peanut 17:51
butter and jelly sandwich penne pasta i 17:53
like to eat this with my chicken 17:55
speaking of which chicken cucumbers 17:56
bananas the problem with ordering 17:58
groceries online because i do like to 18:00
order from amazon fresh just because 18:01
it's free with a prime account and blah 18:03
blah is you can't pick 18:05
you can't pick the bananas and most 18:08
people i would think have a very 18:09
particular shade of yellow that they 18:11
like i don't like any brown spots at all 18:13
only one of them is a little bruise the 18:15
rests are they're okay they will do and 18:17
if i don't finish them in time i always 18:19
freeze them for my smoothie so they 18:20
never go to waste chips and salsa i like 18:22
to have this as a salty snack and the 18:24
holy trinity tomatoes basil 18:25
mozzarella if i don't finish all this 18:28
basil before it starts to wilt i also 18:30
freeze the basil i put it in little ice 18:31
cube trays and fill it up with water and 18:33
then it's like a little flavor cube for 18:35
when i cook my chicken 18:37
and that's it still gonna hold off on 18:38
lunch for a while but coffee from home 18:40
let's edit 18:42
[Music] 18:44
god hungry it feels good to eat like a 18:48
human again i made myself a fat peanut 18:50
butter and jelly i really slapped on the 18:53
really slapped a thick layer of jelly 18:57
and peanut butter on there got a chobani 18:59
yogurt strawberry banana 19:01
little e-bike to my dinner destination 19:03
great place to bike am i right 19:07
as per usual i forgot to film but we 19:08
just had how many tacos eight we got 19:11
eight three tacos delicious we're at a 19:13
place near the empire state building we 19:15
got a 19:17
a marg jug 19:19
it costs this much for my portion i'm 19:21
going to calculate it afterwards 19:23
[Music] 19:25
well welcome to the chocolate bars where 19:28
one bar 19:31
leads to another let's go 19:33
[Music] 19:35
thank you 19:38
[Music] 19:39
we did not know this guy 19:47
[Music] 19:49
midnight snacky poo carrots 19:51
big fan 19:53
hello happy sunday 19:54
i just posted my journey to 100 000 19:57
subscribers video and 20:00
it's such a weird feeling after every 20:02
upload like a mixture of adrenaline but 20:04
also relief and i don't know it's hard 20:06
to describe but anyway the weather 20:08
outside is actually very very lovely i 20:09
say actually because it's been really 20:12
hot and today it's not that hot it's 20:14
nice i'm gonna go get a bagel downstairs 20:16
even though yes i have food at home i 20:18
just need an excuse to get outside so i 20:19
ended up getting a little coffee 20:21
and a bagel little treat to myself after 20:24
posting my video and i know i'm getting 20:26
coffee with a friend in just a little 20:28
bit too so that'll be another coffee but 20:29
uh 20:31
oopsie 20:32
[Music] 20:34
and it looks like i waited until day 20:36
seven at night time to finally get some 20:38
good eating habits aka we're gonna 20:41
actually cook dinner chicky chicky you 20:43
know i might do something a little fancy 20:45
it might do a little caprese salad on 20:47
the side i've only left myself this many 20:48
tomatoes because i just i keep them up 20:50
here and then i come and eat a few of 20:53
them every time i come in the kitchen so 20:54
it's not gonna be much of a salad but 20:56
we'll do what we can okay dinner 20:58
complete it's a chicken tenderloin 21:00
seasoned it with a bunch of good stuff 21:03
look a pricey salad all right let's add 21:04
it up excel on the mac sucks okay 21:06
everything you saw in this video 21:10
including the haircut 21:11
was 21:13
419.45 but i can't help myself i think 21:14
it's only fair to adjust that haircut 21:17
because it's such an outlier so i'm 21:19
going to amortize it over six months so 21:21
now that's 5.87 per week for the 21:23
bi-annual haircut and what else i don't 21:26
usually buy this many coffees but 21:28
whatever i'm not gonna adjust that and 21:29
normally i cook for myself a bit more 21:31
but i'm not gonna adjust that either 21:32
okay so the haircut's really the only 21:34
major outlier here so on an adjusted 21:35
basis that is 272.32 21:37
for the week but you don't think i'd 21:41
forget to add my rent to this did you 21:43
silly head i pay 18.75 per month in rent 21:45
and to reiterate to those who have not 21:47
seen my apartment tour video this is a 21:49
large one-bedroom apartment that costs a 21:51
net effective 3 600 per month i live 21:53
with one of my best friends from college 21:55
we put up a flex wall to make it into a 21:57
two bedroom apartment and my portion is 21:59
one thousand eight hundred and seventy 22:01
five dollars per month which is four 22:02
hundred and thirty dollars per week then 22:04
she and i of course split internet and 22:06
utilities my portion for internet is 22:08
twenty five dollars per month so 5.75 22:09
cents per week and my portion for 22:12
electric utilities average is about 35 22:13
dollars per month so that's about eight 22:15
dollars per week really not bad and my 22:17
building supplies water which i think is 22:18
the case for every apartment in new york 22:20
city so anyway with rent utilities and 22:23
internet i pay 444 dollars per week to 22:25
live here and that is really not bad for 22:29
a luxury high-rise apartment in 22:31
manhattan i also use the gym in my 22:33
building that's why there's no gym 22:34
membership expense in this video and 22:35
there are a few other things i'm just 22:37
not going to add in like they're not 22:38
going to make a substantial difference 22:39
but i do have some subscriptions 22:40
although not very many i will say right 22:42
now i'm paying a decent amount for 22:43
health insurance but my company is going 22:45
to cover that once i start my job and 22:46
they will also cover my phone bill so 22:48
long as i use my personal phone as my 22:50
company phone which i definitely plan to 22:52
do so all right so my adjusted expenses 22:54
of 272 dollars and 32 cents per week 22:56
plus my living expenses of 444 dollars 23:00
per week comes out to a grand total of 23:03
716. and seven cents and i just did a 23:06
quick calculation to see the category 23:09
breakdown so housing which i'm counting 23:10
as my rent internet and electric that's 23:12
62 of my total um expenditure food and 23:15
drinks and i'm including real like 23:18
sustenance food as well as drinks like 23:20
going out to to get cocktails and stuff 23:22
like that marshmallow one that's 24 of 23:24
my total expenditure transportation 23:26
which for me is uber's lifts and city 23:28
bike 13 23:30
and then other which was only my 23:31
amortized haircut is one percent 23:33
interesting checks out so what are my 23:35
thoughts on this number well if it's not 23:37
clear by now new york city is a very 23:38
expensive place to live it is the most 23:41
expensive city in the u.s in fact but 23:43
paying to live in a city like this 23:45
certainly has its professional and 23:46
social benefits but i can tell you more 23:48
about that in the future so long story 23:49
short this number does not surprise me 23:51
in fact it's actually lower than i 23:52
expected and considering that's 23:54
including rent and utilities and all 23:56
that good stuff i'm pretty happy with 23:57
this number and i'm very mindful about 23:58
the things that i choose to splurge on 24:00
and the areas where i'd like to save 24:02
money some examples you saw in this 24:03
video i will splurge on things like 24:04
ubers not only for safety purposes if 24:06
it's late at night but also for 24:08
convenience like if i'm going to an 24:09
event and it's super hot and humid 24:11
outside and i just would rather not show 24:13
up super sweaty i will just pay for the 24:14
uber and then dinners in new york city 24:16
can be super expensive as well like even 24:18
that taco place i went to with my 24:20
friends came out to like what 41 which 24:21
is pretty standard in new york if you're 24:23
getting a drink with dinner as well and 24:25
you're not at like chipotle but i'm 24:26
happy to pay that once or twice a week 24:28
to have a fun dinner with friends 24:30
meanwhile i save a lot of money on rent 24:31
by putting that flex wall up with my 24:33
roommate and generally i just don't tend 24:35
to buy things that i don't need like i 24:37
don't really enjoy shopping for instance 24:38
unless i'm looking for something 24:40
specific 24:41
okay i didn't need this turtle but he's 24:43
gonna be an easter egg in every video 24:45
from here on out so keep an eye out for 24:46
him so as long as i'm investing a large 24:48
percentage of my income saving a lot and 24:49
living well below my means which i am i 24:52
am a happy camper like and subscribe if 24:54
you made it this far and until next time 24:56
turtle out 24:58
what's up wait a gosh darn second 25:00
i just want to buy a coffee you know i'm 25:04
a new yorker now i need longer nails for 25:05
this 25:07
it's honestly hopefully you can't see 25:10
that i'm not wearing pants 25:12

[Music]
ah let's read some comments on my
apartment tour it's been a while i need
my reading glasses
for the same money i have a five bed
three and a half bath that's my monthly
mortgage payment i feel sorry for her
wow 1900 a month for glory i've got a
house in indiana that is five times wait
a gosh darn second
is new york city
expensive
[Music]
hello this is taylor i am a 24 year old
working and living here in new york city
specifically in the most expensive
borough of the mall manhattan wow i'm an
ex-management consultant and right now
working as a full-time youtuber that
being said i am starting another
corporate job in just a couple months so
i'm excited to be filming this video
right now while my expenses are a bit
higher and i'd say more interesting
anyway i have got some ground rules i
want to cover for this video but first
let's get started with day one
[Music]
oh
it's grabbing my breakfast bagel this is
how you know you're in new york this is
the highest price for a pack of
strawberries that i've ever seen
anywhere these corner stores in new york
also known as bodegas can really get you
they're super convenient but typically
extremely expensive i don't recommend
buying groceries in bulk at places like
this sometimes i'll come down i'll get
my breakfast bagels here and some other
things that are affordable like no
matter where you go like a loaf of bread
but yeah you're definitely paying for
convenience with corner markets like
this
[Music]
thank you so much
[Music]
and now for a late night snack
tried and true i said i wasn't gonna
change my behavior for this video
peanut butter jelly
friendly reminder that pb js are
delicious by the way
[Music]
so good all right a couple ground rules
for this video because i'm taking it
probably a little too seriously round
rule number one we are going to
calculate my expenses using accrual
basis accounting meaning we will
recognize my expenses once they are
consumed i'm doing it this way because i
watch a ton of these what i spend in a
week videos and a bunch of people will
go out to let's say costco buy a ton of
food in bulk it'll cost them 500 bucks
great way to save money by the way but
i'm always like you just bought a
month's worth of groceries you do not
spend that every single week and in this
video i'm aiming to get as accurate a
picture as possible into what i spend on
average every single week so using
accrual basis accounting i will only
count the expenses once they're
officially consumed so using that
example i would not count that whole
costco bill i would only count the
portion of it that i consumed this week
does that make sense ground rule number
two no cheating i did not change my
spending behavior whatsoever for the
sake of this video somewhat to my dismay
after watching the footage back but
final ground rule i won't go so far as
to adjust my expenses in the case of an
irregular purchase but i will flag it to
you if i buy something that i would not
normally buy on a weekly basis and
there's a big one in this video you'll
see all right now that i have formalized
this video concept to the point of
boring my entire audience let's continue
before you click off shall we
hello guys day two right now i'm walking
to a coffee shop to meet one of my
friends who's actually a youtuber you
guys probably know him and we are going
to the coffee shop that screams new york
blogger more than any other coffee shop
and you guys may or may not be wondering
maybe you don't know this about me but i
actually do live a very frugal lifestyle
for new york standards it's all relative
so you might be wondering taylor what do
you think of these five six seven dollar
coffees i do have thoughts on them we're
gonna get into it but first let's go buy
one
and then we'll talk about it you can
tell it's gonna be hot today it's very
balmy already and it's only 10 am
snipes
[Music]
all right just got coffee what's up guys
you guys probably know him new york city
aficionado thank you yeah we just had
some good coffee talking youtube talking
finance talking life it's got a lot of
exciting things ahead of time
okay so what do i think of going out to
buy coffee i think you should smash the
like button for zero dollars okay
actually going out to buy coffee is an
expense that gets talked about a lot
within the personal finance sphere and i
get it you know it does add up but even
if you're buying one every single day it
is typically not a major expense
compared to housing or transportation
for most people i mean that's obvious my
point is if you want to make a real dent
in cutting down on expenses i would
start with those two categories to the
extent that you can nonetheless i get
why it's a hot fun issue so here are my
thoughts on going out to buy coffee i
typically do not do it but when i do i
see it as paying rent to be at that
coffee shop but what do i even mean by
that so when i go out to buy coffee it's
always for one of two reasons the first
reason is if i'm out and about on the
town or i'm going out to meet a friend
to catch up talk life talk business
whatever it is usually that's at a
coffee shop in which case of course i'm
gonna buy a coffee at that cafe you know
i'm not gonna bring coffee that i made
from home to a coffee shop it'd be kind
of weird the second reason is if i leave
my lovely home office my apartment here
and go elsewhere to get work done
because i usually am more productive
when i switch up my environment to get
work done elsewhere then i will buy a
coffee at that coffee shop which i
really see as paying rent to sit there
and work for several hours and even
still when i buy them i tend to avoid
the super expensive artisanal coffee
spots because it yeah it hurts my soul
to pay anything even close to six or
seven dollars for coffee i also think
that's ridiculous and the value
proposition is just not there for me
like blue bottle where i just met brett
i admittedly love the taste of that
coffee which is why i go every now and
then but that really is a treat my go-to
coffee shop where i get a lot of work
done is a place where the drip coffee is
three dollars and twenty cents which you
know still probably a high margin for a
drip coffee but it doesn't hurt my soul
to cough up three dollars and twenty
cents compared to a six or seven dollar
latte so that's when i do buy them but
every other time when i'm just working
from home i make my own coffee lately
i've been meeting a lot more people like
other content creators so i've just been
going out for coffee more often it's
also summertime so i'm just out more
conclusion here i don't think it's bad
to buy a coffee if it means you're
getting out of the house being
productive or meeting up with a friend
if you're just working from home though
i say just make your own that's my rule
of thumb but depends on your disposable
income and what you value anyway
speaking of buying coffee
[Music]
okay i did not need another coffee i
really didn't but i kind of see this as
paying rent to sit here and work for a
couple hours so anyway now talking about
irregular expenses i'm going to get my
hair cut we're going to talk about what
i think about expensive haircuts but it
is an irregularity i do it like
once
maybe twice a year you can see it's it's
gotten quite long
all right in route
city bikes one of the best ways to get
around the city just gotta be careful
probably not a good idea to film at the
same time
[Applause]
[Music]
cut for the first time in a minute she
did an amazing job if i may say so
myself anyway that was expensive or
expensive compared to
the things i usually spend my money on
it was 129 and then on top of that a tip
so it's coming out to this much but yeah
a good haircut it is something i
splurged on i'm not gonna lie i have got
my hair messed up a couple times going
to just super cheap places i know that's
not always the case you just have to
find the right person but um
i don't know once i got a little bit of
an expensive haircut i never went back
so what can i say
well hello eddie taylor here popping up
for just one minute to thank today's
sponsor acorns for those who have not
had the pleasure of hearing ashton
kutcher talk about it when he was an
early investor let me tell you about it
acorns is an app that helps people save
and invest in the background of their
life acorns is known to many for its
roundup feature which allows people to
round up each and every purchase to the
next dollar and invest that spare change
without even thinking about it for
example if you go out and buy an
overpriced coffee like i have a few
times this week for four dollars and
fifty cents acorns will round that up to
five dollars and invest that incremental
50 cents for you automatically in
addition to its more famous roundup
feature though acorns also has smart
deposit which allows you to
automatically save and invest a certain
percentage of your income and automatic
recurring investments which again allows
you to invest in the background of your
life and that's what i love about it you
don't need to know anything to start
it's great for beginners and for passive
investing over long periods of time
while giving you the option to
automatically input settings that help
save and invest for you it has
investment options for a number of cases
as well whether you're saving for
retirement for children or you just want
an acorns checking account so click the
link in my description for a 10 sign up
bonus investment and thank you acorns
for sponsoring this video just got back
from my haircut
i like it and i realized oh wait i
should probably eat something i got
hungry so anyway i'm not a nutritionist
obviously i say this because when things
get really really busy i skip meals it's
just kind of the first thing to go don't
do what i do it's not a good thing but
when i do eat i always get something or
not always i do try to
most the time get something fairly
substantial so you might say oh taylor
that's a salad normally i'd agree with
you however when i get salads i do try
to get at least three sources of protein
in there so i get it packed with chicken
mozzarella balls and garbanzo beans so
it actually sticks with me for a while
when i get a salad from sweet green i
also add quinoa to try to get some
complex carbs in there again not a
nutritionist but when i eat i do try my
best to make sure it's something that
sticks with me because that way if i do
end up skipping a meal it's not like
the worst thing ever i'm lucky in that i
don't get tired of eating the same exact
thing
[Music]
all right guys i just sat my booty in
this chair for seven hours straight all
right i rambled a bit here but i did
make an important point while filming
this video i had just got back from a
ton of travel i went to tel aviv and
egypt and amsterdam and usually when i
do a ton of traveling i just fall out of
my good habits in this case i didn't
have any real groceries in the fridge to
cook for myself aside from a few snacks
such as how to longer shelf life so i'm
just flagging that i know that my eating
habits in this video are whack normally
i cook for myself a lot more and it's
typically pretty healthy food but yeah i
also don't stick to three square meals
every single day i just eat when i get
hungry
[Music]
taylor here this is my friend
today we spent how much on this it's
almost twenty dollars for new york city
coffee
a little excessive on the real five
dollars and 72 cents for these two
things not too bad
i've done worse yeah i'm just ten dollar
coffee but the solution to this problem
is
make a lot of money
yes we're working on it so make sure to
subscribe so that way she can make more
money and buy more coffee
making a smoothie good way to get some
good nutrients in and
yep
a lot of bananas
[Music]
[Music]
at this point you might be wondering
taylor are you optimizing for taste
no i'm not i will add a little agave to
make it more sweet though and this will
help
well just found out this was completely
leaking
in my pantry that's that's just great
these tastes good
also i would put athletic greens in
there but this has enough of a taste
where it would overpower it a little bit
so
i'm not gonna do that
and that's it just kidding
[Music]
pretty good accent all right i just
filmed for two hours straight with a
little break in between so now i'm
hungry and i'm meeting a friend for a
drink in like
45 minutes so i need to eat i'm gonna
get my uge bet you can guess what it is
you guessed it the same exact salad
cajun chicken garbanzos mozzarella
tomatoes i'm a big fan 9.53
all right not using my gimbal so it's a
little shaky but
finished that salad
it was good now i'm going to meet my
friend 1000 yards for a drink
what's cooking good looking
look at you all suited up are you
impressed by my fashion very good i have
the same olders hey guys this is my
friend david what's up turtle gang
getting drinks david was an investment
banker now he's in private equity also
an ivy league swimmer and a dj you're
actually pretty cool
i try goodbye david
[Music]
hello it is
12 38 a.m i've been editing for
hours this is a long video
too long not this one but the one i'm
editing anyway got hungry again
and i'm a child but another pb j i got a
cheese stick that is something that i
actually had on hand i like my cheese
sticks i don't peel them like string
cheese i just bite them because i like
to be efficient and then i have a few
carrots left and hummus so i'm excited
to eat my childish little snack here
that it looks like a kindergartener's
lunchbox
good morning turtle gang day four i just
got up
i'm not wearing pants
but you can't say anything only second
day of making coffee at home i told you
guys i would flag too if anything in
this video was irregular and me going
out to get as many coffees as i have
this week is irregular i swear but yeah
those coffees happen because i'm meeting
new creators and meeting new people in
the city and that's just kind of a way
for us to to get together which makes
sense but anyway i just went on
instagram live for over an hour while
sipping my
i don't know how much this costs i'll do
the calculations afterwards cost this
much
coffee and uh it was so much fun follow
me on instagram if you're not at tay k
bell that way you can actually ask me
questions live and we can get to know
each other a little bit better but um
yeah i'm gonna do it more often that was
super fun anyway follow me over there
all right for the rest of the day i have
a uh
not an event but a thing at a friend's
house later at like 6 p.m and until then
i'm going to edit
that's it i'm just going to edit and
then i will eat lunch when i get hungry
got myself a hot steamy sandwich okey
dokey i edited until my computer died
and then i realized i was hungry it's a
good time i almost got that same salad
in fact had i not been filming this
video
i might have
but you guys inspire me
indirectly to get something ever so
slightly different i got this um
italiano sandwich it's really good i've
had it before it's filling too it's like
packed with chicken okay so like i
mentioned earlier i'm going to a
friend's thing tonight and there will be
food at that event so i won't have to
pay for that and i wondered should i
normalize that by saying i normally
don't have my dinners paid for but when
i think about it it happens probably
once a week where i end up going to
something where there's food so
i'm not gonna i'm not gonna normalize
that expense okay next expense is the
lift that i'm gonna take to this event
that i just got dressed for and normally
i would walk because it is close enough
but it's super hot and humid i don't
feel like being sweaty by the time i get
there and it's in times like these where
i just take the extra time to do some
more editing call an uber
don't show up sweaty it's just a nice
luxury to have sometimes anyway here's
my outfit i don't know if you care kinda
looks like a high-end dermatologist
that's that's what i feel like i look
like
[Music]
so this is something else i definitely
splurge on a bit and that is ubers we'll
talk about this more at the end but i do
definitely walk subway or bike as often
as possible but when it's a matter of
prioritizing my safety like taking a
subway or walking by myself late at
night i definitely just pay for the uber
and sometimes i take it if i want to
prioritize convenience as well but we'll
talk more about it at the end got home
from the event it was a lot of fun you
guys know the drill took a shower and
now midnight snack poo all of this
together is about this much and if
you're curious no i don't eat the hummus
by itself i dip the cheese stick in it i
don't know if that's much better than
eating it by itself but uh
anyway day five that'll be 30 000
all right already finished it but had a
breakfast bagel got a couple buddies
here what'd you get
just a buddy
look what we have over here yeah i got a
i got myself a cola brew nice excellent
choice
[Music]
hello guys it is day five today's a
friday but get this days one through
four that you've already seen it were
last week i filmed monday tuesday
wednesday thursday and then i had a
four-day wedding extravaganza for one of
my close friends on friday through
monday and my expenses on those four
days were just 100 abnormal so just
decided not to film it because it would
not be an accurate look into a typical
turtle week so i actually have not had
this salad in like a week even though to
you guys it might seem like i had it
yesterday and i missed my salad i missed
it so much i'm so happy to be with it
again
[Music]
the day has come i finally bought
protrudes i figure i've been here long
enough from all the traveling where just
my routines are totally messed up and i
don't want to live off that salad
anymore so i actually bought food but as
discussed i'm not counting the expenses
until they are
consumed i'll show you guys what i got
so you can see what i actually buy when
i do have good habits and buy groceries
okay rapid fire milk for my overnight
oats carrots strawberries these go hand
in hand sandwich bread and blackberry
jam because i love me a good peanut
butter and jelly sandwich penne pasta i
like to eat this with my chicken
speaking of which chicken cucumbers
bananas the problem with ordering
groceries online because i do like to
order from amazon fresh just because
it's free with a prime account and blah
blah is you can't pick
you can't pick the bananas and most
people i would think have a very
particular shade of yellow that they
like i don't like any brown spots at all
only one of them is a little bruise the
rests are they're okay they will do and
if i don't finish them in time i always
freeze them for my smoothie so they
never go to waste chips and salsa i like
to have this as a salty snack and the
holy trinity tomatoes basil
mozzarella if i don't finish all this
basil before it starts to wilt i also
freeze the basil i put it in little ice
cube trays and fill it up with water and
then it's like a little flavor cube for
when i cook my chicken
and that's it still gonna hold off on
lunch for a while but coffee from home
let's edit
[Music]
god hungry it feels good to eat like a
human again i made myself a fat peanut
butter and jelly i really slapped on the
really slapped a thick layer of jelly
and peanut butter on there got a chobani
yogurt strawberry banana
little e-bike to my dinner destination
great place to bike am i right
as per usual i forgot to film but we
just had how many tacos eight we got
eight three tacos delicious we're at a
place near the empire state building we
got a
a marg jug
it costs this much for my portion i'm
going to calculate it afterwards
[Music]
well welcome to the chocolate bars where
one bar
leads to another let's go
[Music]
thank you
[Music]
we did not know this guy
[Music]
midnight snacky poo carrots
big fan
hello happy sunday
i just posted my journey to 100 000
subscribers video and
it's such a weird feeling after every
upload like a mixture of adrenaline but
also relief and i don't know it's hard
to describe but anyway the weather
outside is actually very very lovely i
say actually because it's been really
hot and today it's not that hot it's
nice i'm gonna go get a bagel downstairs
even though yes i have food at home i
just need an excuse to get outside so i
ended up getting a little coffee
and a bagel little treat to myself after
posting my video and i know i'm getting
coffee with a friend in just a little
bit too so that'll be another coffee but
uh
oopsie
[Music]
and it looks like i waited until day
seven at night time to finally get some
good eating habits aka we're gonna
actually cook dinner chicky chicky you
know i might do something a little fancy
it might do a little caprese salad on
the side i've only left myself this many
tomatoes because i just i keep them up
here and then i come and eat a few of
them every time i come in the kitchen so
it's not gonna be much of a salad but
we'll do what we can okay dinner
complete it's a chicken tenderloin
seasoned it with a bunch of good stuff
look a pricey salad all right let's add
it up excel on the mac sucks okay
everything you saw in this video
including the haircut
was
419.45 but i can't help myself i think
it's only fair to adjust that haircut
because it's such an outlier so i'm
going to amortize it over six months so
now that's 5.87 per week for the
bi-annual haircut and what else i don't
usually buy this many coffees but
whatever i'm not gonna adjust that and
normally i cook for myself a bit more
but i'm not gonna adjust that either
okay so the haircut's really the only
major outlier here so on an adjusted
basis that is 272.32
for the week but you don't think i'd
forget to add my rent to this did you
silly head i pay 18.75 per month in rent
and to reiterate to those who have not
seen my apartment tour video this is a
large one-bedroom apartment that costs a
net effective 3 600 per month i live
with one of my best friends from college
we put up a flex wall to make it into a
two bedroom apartment and my portion is
one thousand eight hundred and seventy
five dollars per month which is four
hundred and thirty dollars per week then
she and i of course split internet and
utilities my portion for internet is
twenty five dollars per month so 5.75
cents per week and my portion for
electric utilities average is about 35
dollars per month so that's about eight
dollars per week really not bad and my
building supplies water which i think is
the case for every apartment in new york
city so anyway with rent utilities and
internet i pay 444 dollars per week to
live here and that is really not bad for
a luxury high-rise apartment in
manhattan i also use the gym in my
building that's why there's no gym
membership expense in this video and
there are a few other things i'm just
not going to add in like they're not
going to make a substantial difference
but i do have some subscriptions
although not very many i will say right
now i'm paying a decent amount for
health insurance but my company is going
to cover that once i start my job and
they will also cover my phone bill so
long as i use my personal phone as my
company phone which i definitely plan to
do so all right so my adjusted expenses
of 272 dollars and 32 cents per week
plus my living expenses of 444 dollars
per week comes out to a grand total of
716. and seven cents and i just did a
quick calculation to see the category
breakdown so housing which i'm counting
as my rent internet and electric that's
62 of my total um expenditure food and
drinks and i'm including real like
sustenance food as well as drinks like
going out to to get cocktails and stuff
like that marshmallow one that's 24 of
my total expenditure transportation
which for me is uber's lifts and city
bike 13
and then other which was only my
amortized haircut is one percent
interesting checks out so what are my
thoughts on this number well if it's not
clear by now new york city is a very
expensive place to live it is the most
expensive city in the u.s in fact but
paying to live in a city like this
certainly has its professional and
social benefits but i can tell you more
about that in the future so long story
short this number does not surprise me
in fact it's actually lower than i
expected and considering that's
including rent and utilities and all
that good stuff i'm pretty happy with
this number and i'm very mindful about
the things that i choose to splurge on
and the areas where i'd like to save
money some examples you saw in this
video i will splurge on things like
ubers not only for safety purposes if
it's late at night but also for
convenience like if i'm going to an
event and it's super hot and humid
outside and i just would rather not show
up super sweaty i will just pay for the
uber and then dinners in new york city
can be super expensive as well like even
that taco place i went to with my
friends came out to like what 41 which
is pretty standard in new york if you're
getting a drink with dinner as well and
you're not at like chipotle but i'm
happy to pay that once or twice a week
to have a fun dinner with friends
meanwhile i save a lot of money on rent
by putting that flex wall up with my
roommate and generally i just don't tend
to buy things that i don't need like i
don't really enjoy shopping for instance
unless i'm looking for something
specific
okay i didn't need this turtle but he's
gonna be an easter egg in every video
from here on out so keep an eye out for
him so as long as i'm investing a large
percentage of my income saving a lot and
living well below my means which i am i
am a happy camper like and subscribe if
you made it this far and until next time
turtle out
what's up wait a gosh darn second
i just want to buy a coffee you know i'm
a new yorker now i need longer nails for
this
it's honestly hopefully you can't see
that i'm not wearing pants
