happy birthday 03:06
number two 03:11
there are some new recruits with us i 03:12

because i don't care 03:16
finally we have 14 missing mammal cases 03:20

a teensy little otter and city hall is 03:26
right up my tail to find him this is 03:30
priority number one 03:33
listen i don't know what you're doing 03:49
skulking around during daylight hours 03:51
but i don't want any trouble in here so 03:53
hit the road i'm not looking for any 03:56
trouble either sir i simply want to buy 03:58

want to cause you any trouble but i 05:08
believe scooping ice cream with an 05:10
ungloved trunk is a class 3 health code 05:12
violation 05:14
which is kind of a big deal 05:16
of course i could let you off with a 05:19
warning if you were to glove those 05:20

without a muzzle you're even dumber than 09:13

i learned two things that day 09:37
one 09:39
i was never gonna let anyone see that 09:41
they got to me 09:43
and two 09:46
if the world's only gonna see a fox as 09:48
shifty and untrustworthy 09:51
there's no point in trying to be 09:54
anything else 09:55
nick 09:57
you are so much more than that 09:58
ma'am our detectives are very busy 10:04

case assistant mayor bellwether the 10:51
mammal inclusion initiative is really 10:53
starting to pay off 10:55
mayor lionheart is just gonna be so just 10:57

prey live in harmony and sing kumbaya 12:59
i'm judy your new neighbor yeah well 13:01
we're loud don't expect us to apologize 13:03
for it we have the most amazing cast 13:05
[Music] 13:09
jennifer goodwin plays judy hopps and 13:12
she's been a lot of fun it's me again 13:14
hey it's officer toot 13:16
both judy and i are fiercely optimistic 13:19
hey you ready to make the world a better 13:23
place 13:24
jason bateman plays nick wilde sly fox 13:27
dumb bunny this fox that i'm playing is 13:30
conniving and a bit dry with his wit 13:33
it's called a hustle sweetheart so i 13:36
guess that's why they called it's so 13:38
distinctively jason but in a whole new 13:41
way it's a perfect role for him well 13:44
that is high 13:45
praise we have idris elba playing chief 13:46
bogo you strike out 13:49
you resign this is an opportunity to do 13:52
something that's funny and i have to 13:54
really give him some depth well this 13:56
should be good 13:58
we are working with shakira on this film 14:00
and she has done a song for this movie 14:03
called try everything that is amazing 14:06
the zootopia team is just fantastic jk 14:11
simmons plays mayor leodore lionheart 14:13
okay officer hopps let's see those teeth 14:15
there's sort of a range of your voice 14:18
that you use it's great to see that 14:20
coming out of this fantastical character 14:21
i heard you bellwether take care of it 14:24
jenny slate as bellwether a really 14:26
distinctive voice it's a real proud day 14:28
for us little guys to be a character in 14:31
a disney movie that's top of the list 14:33
[Music] 14:38
my name is corey loftus and i'm the art 14:46
director of characters on zootopia and 14:47
today we're going to be drawing officer 14:49
benjamin clawhauser 14:51
with clawhauser 14:53
he's this really soft 14:55
lovable big hearted guy 14:58
and 15:01
almost every one of these characters 15:02
starts with a circle 15:04
so start with a circle on his head but 15:06
he has these huge fluffy cheeks 15:08
so we like to kind of describe his shape 15:10
as like a basketball 15:13
sitting in a big bean bag 15:15
so the bean bag is his cheeks his head 15:17
is the basketball 15:21
you kind of see just with those two 15:23
things it already starts feeling like 15:24
clawhauser paul houser he's got a really 15:26
tight collared shirt 15:29
so his neck kind of rolls up 15:31
right where that shirt gets tight 15:34
i call it a shirt 15:37
now if we draw this line down the center 15:39
of the basketball 15:41
and draw one across 15:43
[Music] 15:45
and draw this little v right here this 15:47
is where clawhauser's eyes 15:49
are going to sit and this is where his 15:52
nose sits 15:54
his nose kind of has this butterfly 15:56
shape to it 16:00
clawhauser 16:03
is often surprised 16:04
or often happy 16:07
so usually drawn with his eyebrows 16:09
up like this 16:12
and then if you were to draw a little 16:14
road 16:15
right from the tips of his eyebrows down 16:17
to his 16:19
nose 16:22
this is where a lot of his spots live 16:23
right in between the eyes like this 16:25
now his eyes 16:28
got a little bit of an eyelash 16:29
and come down to a point right where we 16:31
drew those lines 16:33
clawhouser is always happy so we're 16:35
going to draw a big smile on him 16:36
draw a line coming off his nose this is 16:39
the corner of his mouth 16:41
usually see his bottom teeth 16:43
peeking out just a little bit 16:45
and then he has this dark lip on the 16:47
bottom 16:49
just coloring the inside of his 16:53
mouth dark so you know that's the inside 16:55
of his mouth 16:57
[Music] 16:58
and then his ears 17:01
this line that we drew his ears are 17:03
going to sit 17:04
pretty much 17:06
from a line from his nose all the way 17:07
through his eye and out to the side of 17:09
his head 17:10
drawing these fluffy ears 17:13
there's nothing that really says cat 17:16
quite like big whiskers so right here 17:19
three little spots for the whiskers 17:22
three on this side 17:24
big long whiskers 17:26
he's also got a few whiskers up on the 17:29
top of his head 17:31
but he still doesn't feel quite like 17:33
clawhauser yet and that's because he 17:35
doesn't have his spots 17:37
[Music] 17:40
so if we draw a line from the corner of 17:42
his mouth 17:44
down to his shirt 17:46
on either side 17:48
this whole 17:49
area around the bottom of his mouth 17:51
where his beard might be 17:53
that is the no spot zone everywhere else 17:55
open game for spots 17:59
around his eyes is also a no spot zone 18:02
a little road we drew and around his 18:05
eyes no spots going there 18:07
and then the most noticeable spot on 18:10
clawhauser is right here on his cheek 18:12
a spot you may all recognize 18:17
and that goes right there 18:22
drawing his nostrils 18:26
and that 18:32
is how i draw a clawhauser 18:34
[Music] 18:37
[Music] 18:47
my name is corey loftis and i'm the art 18:53
director of characters on zootopia and 18:54
today we're going to be drawing flash 18:56
so with most of our characters in 18:59
zootopia we're going to start with a 19:01
circle for flash's head now flash is a 19:03
sloth 19:06
who works at the 19:07
dmv and he's one of the first people 19:08
that 19:11
nick and judy 19:12
meet once they start working together 19:14
so flash 19:18
is not a whole lot more than a circle 19:20
if you imagine this tube coming out of 19:23
the back 19:25
now flash is 19:26
very very slow 19:28
extremely slow so in his design i tried 19:30
to make everything about him seem slow 19:33
so his eyes are literally sliding off 19:37
his face 19:40
so i've drawn them like eggs sliding off 19:41
a plate 19:43
and flash's mouth 19:45
it's kind of like drawing a little 19:47
beak it's much more like a little parrot 19:50
beak 19:53
than it is our mouths 19:54
so it comes down to a little point and 19:56
draw the corner of his mouth now sloths 19:58
have like this cool bandit mask 20:01
that goes right over their eyes 20:04
and fall right off the sides of their 20:09
face 20:10
kind of like a raccoon 20:12
and that's a lot darker 20:15
than the rest of their face i'm going to 20:17
color this in a little bit darker here 20:19
around his eyes 20:20
then his eyes 20:25
or his pupils 20:28
sit right under his lid like this 20:30
i like to draw him with his mouth open 20:32
just a little bit 20:34
like he's about to start saying 20:36
something 20:38
and you've caught him just as he starts 20:39
talking 20:41
now flashes 20:43
got hair on top of his head 20:46
and when i was trying to figure out what 20:49
sort of hairstyle flash would have 20:51
and byron was talking to me about the 20:54
character i kept noticing our director's 20:56
haircut 20:58
and flash and byron ended up getting the 21:00
same haircut 21:03
so let's part it in the middle 21:07
comes down on each side 21:11
now sloths have really thick coarse hair 21:14
it's not soft like a like a rabbit or 21:18
even a cat or a bear it's really really 21:21
coarse so you notice a lot of flash's 21:23
hairs more than you do on other animals 21:25
dry flash's hair can be really fun so 21:28
i'm just going to go ahead and draw in 21:31
all his hair 21:32
something about it makes it seem more 21:33
like him 21:35
and then the first time 21:37
i drew flash 21:39
[Music] 21:42
i had fun imagining that he was just 21:44
about to say something but people kept 21:47
interrupting him 21:48
so he's politely held up his hand 21:50
for a chance to speak 21:55
sloths have these really 21:57
long claws so that they can 22:00
hang on to branches 22:03
don't have to worry about falling so we 22:05
didn't lose flash's claws 22:07
flash was a lot of fun design 22:10
with a lot of characters on zootopia you 22:12
never really knew what they were going 22:14
to have to do for the story you didn't 22:15
know if they were going to have to 22:18
climb over a wall or or 22:20
you know jump from a great height or or 22:24
try to reach 22:26
something on a high wall or you never 22:28
knew what they were gonna do they might 22:30
they might skate they might 22:32
open a door but with flash i knew he 22:34
wasn't gonna do much 22:36
if anything so i knew exactly 22:38
what he needed to do and it made his 22:42
design a lot more fun because 22:44
i already had a plan of what he was 22:47
going to have to do in the film 22:48
and there he is 22:52
[Music] 23:07
hi everybody i'm byron howard i'm one of 23:13
the directors on zootopia and today 23:15
we're going to learn how to draw judy 23:17
hopps when i think about judy i think 23:18
she's very 23:20
optimistic very bright very intelligent 23:21
very strong-willed and so you know she 23:23
has a very bright feature so the first 23:26
thing i do 23:28
is i kind of create this 23:29
kind of gumdrop shape 23:31
because i love 23:33
candy 23:34
i love food that is sugary 23:35
and so i create this little gum drop 23:38
shape see it looks a little bit like a 23:40
gum drop here's a gum drop for example 23:41
kinda like that so judy has 23:43
kind of a tall forehead like this 23:45
kind of wide cheeks like many many 23:47
rabbits we looked at many real rabbits 23:49
to design judy 23:52
and we discovered they all have adorable 23:53
cheeks so we knew that had to be part of 23:55
her 23:56
uh she and then once you get this kind 23:57
of gumdrop shape in place 23:59
i usually put the nose in there because 24:01
the nose is a nice anchor point that 24:03
tells me which way she's going to look 24:04
so judy's looking down to the right and 24:06
then once i have the nose then i can use 24:08
that to kind of focus these lines that 24:10
kind of determine where her eyes 24:12
go 24:14
and her eyes if you think about them as 24:15
being a little almond shaped 24:18
it makes them feel like they kind of sit 24:20
into her skull a little bit more which 24:22
is nice 24:23
[Music] 24:24
these nice kind of lashes and so again 24:25
you say again a very simple gumdrop 24:28
shape little tiny nose nice big eyes 24:30
and then she has this cute little 24:34
teeny tiny mouth 24:36
that makes her just adorable and glenn 24:38
keane 24:41
the great glenn keane who did ariel 24:42
and the beast 24:44
and is a good friend of mine 24:45
taught me that to make a drawing of a 24:47
mouth look really good you put these 24:49
little dark corners 24:50
that kind of makes it feel like it's 24:52
tucking back and shadowing it so and he 24:53
was right glenn was right 24:55
he's always right anyway 24:57
and uh from that point well rabbits 25:00
don't look like rabbits unless they have 25:02
ears and so usually what i do with the 25:04
ears is i find 25:05
this flow from the back of her head no 25:07
because it feels good to uh 25:09
especially with disney characters to 25:12
have that flow coming off of the sk of 25:14
the cranium which goes like this see 25:16
this nice big big line 25:17
big relaxed swoop and just coming right 25:19
back off the jaw and then if you just 25:21
imagine that other ear being attached 25:23
back there 25:24
on the other side of her head you can 25:25
kind of 25:27
knock that in back there you can do it 25:28
nice and rough like that it's no 25:30
pressure drawing is fun it's relaxing 25:31
it's like meditation just relax 25:34
and then uh usually i do the same thing 25:37
i kind of flow off the front of her face 25:40
down into her neck and into her collar 25:43
and again if you can kind of just find 25:44
these uh these flowing lines finding 25:46
these sort of flowing calligraphic lines 25:48
gives your drawing a nice grace and ties 25:51
it all together really nicely and you 25:53
are welcome to 25:55
shade judy she's a gray gray rabbit so 25:56
if you'd like to shade her 25:59
shading is also nice 26:00
and then she has these sort of beautiful 26:02
uh dark 26:04
ear tips right up there 26:06
so if you can do this at parties you 26:08
will be so popular 26:10
and people will buy you things 26:12
and be your friend and then uh and 26:14
usually when you do a drawing you have 26:16
to let people know who did it so i'm 26:18
byron so i'll sign this 26:20
byron 26:22
did this there we go 26:25
all right anyway so this judy hopps 26:28
[Applause] 26:31
just because they have 26:33
because you have it up here you can do 26:35
what you're seeing here 26:39
is i've got a 2d animation desk set up 26:40
and this is what uh 26:45
this is how i learned to animate this is 26:47
what the same setup here was the same 26:49
that they used 26:52
back in the 30s and the 40s when they 26:54
were making 26:56
the 2d films with waltz across the 26:57
street and it's all the same 27:00
technology it's just these little peg 27:02
holes in the bottom of this paper and 27:03
it's it's always great just to sit down 27:04
and start moving 27:08
the character's face around it's like 27:09
once you have a solid drawing of hops 27:11
then you can start to play around with 27:12
her expressions you can kind of start to 27:14
squash and stretch things and our cg 27:16
animators do exactly the same thing they 27:18
start with a solid pose of hops in the 27:19
computer and then they start building up 27:21
their keys 27:23
and you can figure out how to make her 27:26
kind of squinch and kind of get 27:29
different expressions she can look angry 27:31
happy sad 27:33
but uh that's the great thing is that 27:34
all of what we do 27:36
at disney whether it's cg or drawn has 27:38
this great tradition of 27:40
art that's been around 27:42
at our studio for 27:44
about almost like 100 years and so and 27:45
we we love that we love that i love that 27:48
tradition i love the fact that 27:50
every time i do another one of these 27:52
films 27:53
the uh the women and men in our 27:55
animation department teach me something 27:57
new 27:58
and they keep getting better and better 27:59
[Music] 28:01
hi everybody i'm byron howard one of the 28:13
directors on zootopia and today i'm 28:14
going to teach you how to draw nick 28:17
wilde nicholas p wilde get ready here we 28:19
go so here we go okay so judy has i told 28:22
you like that kind of gum drop head 28:24
right 28:26
like that well nick he's a fox and foxes 28:27
are carnivores and they have to be a 28:30
little more sleek so fox's heads are 28:31
shaped a little bit more kind of like a 28:33
flattened 28:35
football so where judy is this nick is 28:36
more like this you know here's here's 28:38
judy internet 28:40
there we go and nick is more like this 28:41
there we go 28:43
like this kind of thing oh see looks 28:44
sneakier already he's more streamlined 28:47
he's got a lower forehead that sort of 28:49
thing so 28:50
if we do a big nick here we go so we 28:52
need the same thing so do this nice big 28:53
simple shape 28:55
this is kind of this sort of flattened 28:59
football a little more on the bottom 29:01
than the top there you go and uh once 29:03
you have that then i usually go with 29:05
nick to the eyes and we got a lot of 29:07
this from jason bateman because jason 29:09
does these little looks where he looks 29:10
so sneaky 29:12
but he's so nice 29:13
he's a very nice nice man but he can be 29:16
very sneaky 29:17
and so we try to get this sort of half 29:20
lidded look on nick 29:22
a lot and that gave us a lot for his 29:24
expression so that 29:26
really was great because people say wow 29:28
i look at that fox and that looks just 29:30
like jason bateman and it's true because 29:32
the animators will watch 29:34
jason record 29:35
and they'll try to get his personality 29:38
into 29:40
the drawings and the animation 29:41
performance and so i got the football 29:43
shape i put my eyes in place got these 29:44
little slanty 29:46
sort of almond eyes 29:47
and give them make a little sneaky a 29:49
little half littered usually if you keep 29:51
those eyelids really high keep those 29:52
eyebrows really high because he's not 29:54
mean he's just sneaky there's a 29:56
difference 29:58
and then if i usually i usually put the 29:59
nose out here somewhere and he's got a 30:01
long snout so that's now it's going to 30:02
stick way out far it's coming at you 30:04
in three quarters it's like 3d here it 30:06
comes like toward you and then i usually 30:08
kind of just put in that mouth there it 30:10
is 30:12
and a lot of what i do on this mouth 30:13
is from chuck jones you all know who 30:16
chuck jones is chuck jones one of my 30:18
heroes to these amazing cartoons growing 30:20
up with uh 30:23
wiley coyote and the roadrunner uh so we 30:25
looked at lots of different foxes and 30:27
lots of different designs for these 30:29
foxes and looked at robin hood 30:30
and many many cartoon designs from all 30:32
around the world and as we go you know 30:34
you can sort of build nick's expression 30:36
and you can put his ears coming off the 30:39
back of his head you know he's kind of 30:41
sleek so think of think of nick like a 30:42
sports car he's like a sleek 30:44
sleek sports 30:47
car and every time you find a line you 30:48
can kind of bring it off of 30:51
another line that you've already drawn 30:53
and that'll make it feel kind of 30:55
graceful 30:56
and you can kind of make that flow down 30:57
into his 30:59
body he kind of has that kind of puffed 31:00
out chest sometimes and then you can 31:02
kind of drop his shoulders off the 31:04
top like that maybe cross his arms like 31:07
that 31:09
and again the looser you are 31:10
the better you'll feel 31:12
because it shouldn't be pressure you 31:14
could have fun you should just learn to 31:16
flow with the drawings just let it 31:17
happen 31:18
not think about it too much 31:19
and he also has a tie 31:23
down there oh i'm not great at drawing 31:25
ties i'll just draw that real quick and 31:27
say it's art see it's rough it's art 31:28
that's fine anyway and nick also has 31:31
this beautiful kind of orange red color 31:34
and you can shade them in a little bit 31:36
if you just have a 31:37
black pencil like i do 31:38
a little bit of that makes it look a 31:40
little more finished 31:42
that kind of thing 31:44
looks very sneaky but charming just like 31:48
the real jason bateman 31:50
and uh and then when you get in okay 31:53
that's about as much as i want to do 31:55
with nick then you sign it sign your 31:56
name 31:58
and go show someone because they'll be 32:01
very proud of you 32:03
that's and that's how to draw a nickel 32:04
[Music] 32:07
in the world of zootopia humans never 32:15
happened 32:17
which makes zootopia a modern civilized 32:19
world that is entirely animal 32:21
that is an animal 32:25
animals in zootopia are anthropomorphic 32:28
that is just a big fancy word that means 32:31
they walk around on two feet 32:33
they do not go to work nude 32:35
thank you 32:37
[Applause] 32:39
almost that's got it 32:40
and they use technology 32:43
[Music] 32:44
okay there are mammals from all over the 32:50
globe in zootopia 32:52
large and small fast and slow 32:54
but the truth is 32:59
zootopia isn't perfect and just like our 33:00
world not everyone gets along 33:02
especially natural enemies 33:05
which can create some 33:12
issues 33:14
but nature always gives animals special 33:16
skills to survive and while one may have 33:18
amazing night vision 33:20
another may have incredible hearing 33:22
and an air-powered elephant tranquilizer 33:25
so now you know zootopia 33:29
like nothing you've seen before 33:32
[Music] 33:35
zootopia 33:44
a gleaming city 33:46
where animals of all breeds predator and 33:49
prey alike live together in peace and 33:52
harmony hi i'm judy your new neighbor 33:55
yeah well we're loud don't expect us to 33:57

i have 36 hours left we can only solve 35:03
it together it's not about how badly you 35:05
want something it's about what you are 35:08

i am a real cop never let them see that 35:11
they get to you bunnies so emotional 35:13
do not let go 35:17
i'm gonna let go 35:19

we are still animals quit it you're 35:25
gonna start a howl 35:28
no you are naked for sure we're a 35:30
naturalist club all the way down 35:33
[Music] 35:36
try everything life's a little bit messy 35:39
we all make mistakes 35:44
[Applause] 35:46
no matter what type of animal you are 35:48
change starts with you we gotta go 35:51
the most feared crime boss mr big 35:54

thought you'd be oh uh you probably
didn't know but a bunny can call another
bunny cute but when other animals do it
it's a little oh

thinks is just a flabby donut-loving cop
stereotyping you oh it's okay
oh you've actually you've actually got
there's a
in your neck the foam the mm-hmm there's
where you went you little dickens
i should get a roll call so which way do
i oh bullpen's over there to the left

that poor little buddy's gonna get eaten
alive
[Music]

oh my god did you see those leopard
print jeggings
[Music]
oh
[Music]
i love your hair
thank you
come to papa
all right everybody set
i've got three items on the docket
first
we need to acknowledge the elephant in
the room
francine
happy birthday
number two
there are some new recruits with us i
should introduce but i'm not going to
because i don't care
finally we have 14 missing mammal cases
all predators from a giant polar bear to
a teensy little otter and city hall is
right up my tail to find him this is
priority number one
listen i don't know what you're doing
skulking around during daylight hours
but i don't want any trouble in here so
hit the road i'm not looking for any
trouble either sir i simply want to buy
a jumbo pop
for my little boy
you want the red or the blue pal
oh
i'm such a oh come on kid back up listen
buddy what there are only fox ice cream
joints in your part of town uh no no
there are there are it's just my boy
this goofy little stinker he loves all
things elephant wants to be one when he
grows up
is that adorable oh
who the heck am i to crush his little
dreams huh
right look you probably can't read fox
but the sign says we reserve the right
to refuse service to anyone so beat it
you're holding up the line
hello
excuse me hey you're gonna have to wait
your turn like everyone else meter maid
actually i'm an officer
just had a quick question
are your customers aware they're getting
snot and mucus with their cookies and
cream
what are you talking about well i don't
want to cause you any trouble but i
believe scooping ice cream with an
ungloved trunk is a class 3 health code
violation
which is kind of a big deal
of course i could let you off with a
warning if you were to glove those
trunks and
i don't know
finished selling this nice dad and his
son up
what was it
a jumbo pop
please
a jumbo pup
15
thank you so much thank you
oh no are you kidding me i don't have my
wallet
i'd lose my head if it weren't attached
to my neck that's the truth oh boy i'm
sorry pal got to be about the worst
birthday ever please don't be mad at me
thanks anyway
keep the change
officer i can't thank you enough so kind
really can i pay you back oh no my treat
it's just
you know it burns me up to see folks
with such backward attitudes towards
foxes i just want to say you're a great
dad and just a
a real articulate fella oh well that is
high praise
it's rare that i find someone so
non-patronizing
officer hopps mr wilde nick wilde
and you little guy you want to be an
elephant when you grow up you be an
elephant because this is zootopia anyone
can be anything
well now wait a minute
polar bear fur
rap pack music fancy cup i know his car
this is we got to go why whose car is it
the most feared crime boss in tundratown
they call him mr big and he does not
like me so we gotta go not leaving this
is a crime scene well it's gonna be an
even bigger crime scene if mr big finds
me here so we're leaving right now
raymond and is that kevin
long time no see and speaking of no see
how about you forget you saw me huh for
old time's sake
that's it now
what did you do that made mr pig so mad
at you i am i may have sold him a very
expensive wool rug that was made from
the fur of a skunk
but
oh sweet cheese and crackers
thank you
never let them see that they get to you
so
things do get to you
well i mean not not anymore but
i was
small and emotionally unbalanced like
you once
har har no it's true
i think i was
eight or maybe nine and all i wanted to
do was join the junior ranger scouts
so my mom scraped together enough money
to buy me a brand-new uniform because by
god i was gonna fit in even if i was the
only predator in the troop the only fox
okay nick i was gonna be part of a pack
ready for initiation yeah pretty much
born ready
i was so proud
okay now raise your right paw and
deliver the oath i nicholas wilde
promise to be brave
loyal
helpful and trustworthy
even though you're a fox
what
no no what did i do wrong you guys know
please tell me what did i do wrong what
did i do
[Music]
if you thought we would ever trust a fox
without a muzzle you're even dumber than
you look
i learned two things that day
one
i was never gonna let anyone see that
they got to me
and two
if the world's only gonna see a fox as
shifty and untrustworthy
there's no point in trying to be
anything else
nick
you are so much more than that
ma'am our detectives are very busy
please
there's got to be somebody to find my
emmett mrs
i will find him
oh thank you
bless you bless you little bunny
take this
find my emmett
bring him home to me and my babies
please
uh um mrs archerton please wait out here
of course oh thank you both so much one
second
you're fired what
why insubordination
now i'm going to open this door and
you're going to tell that otter you're a
former meter maid with delusions of
grandeur who will not be taking the case
i just heard officer hopps has taken the
case assistant mayor bellwether the
mammal inclusion initiative is really
starting to pay off
mayor lionheart is just gonna be so just
no no let's not tell the mayor just yet
and i sent it and it is done so i did do
that
hey everyone it's shakira and i'm so
happy to announce that i'm gonna be a
part of the new disney movie zootopia
where i'm gonna be playing gazelle
i'm letting you guys into my studio
today because it is a special occasion
and i'm gonna play a small snippet of my
new song that's gonna be in the movie
try everything
good evening zootopia

but i'll just start again
i keep falling
[Music]
birds don't just fly
they fall down and
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
until
[Music]
i won't give up
[Music]
though i could fail
[Music]
[Applause]
try everything
[Music]
this is zootopia where predators and
prey live in harmony and sing kumbaya
i'm judy your new neighbor yeah well
we're loud don't expect us to apologize
for it we have the most amazing cast
[Music]
jennifer goodwin plays judy hopps and
she's been a lot of fun it's me again
hey it's officer toot
both judy and i are fiercely optimistic
hey you ready to make the world a better
place
jason bateman plays nick wilde sly fox
dumb bunny this fox that i'm playing is
conniving and a bit dry with his wit
it's called a hustle sweetheart so i
guess that's why they called it's so
distinctively jason but in a whole new
way it's a perfect role for him well
that is high
praise we have idris elba playing chief
bogo you strike out
you resign this is an opportunity to do
something that's funny and i have to
really give him some depth well this
should be good
we are working with shakira on this film
and she has done a song for this movie
called try everything that is amazing
the zootopia team is just fantastic jk
simmons plays mayor leodore lionheart
okay officer hopps let's see those teeth
there's sort of a range of your voice
that you use it's great to see that
coming out of this fantastical character
i heard you bellwether take care of it
jenny slate as bellwether a really
distinctive voice it's a real proud day
for us little guys to be a character in
a disney movie that's top of the list
[Music]
my name is corey loftus and i'm the art
director of characters on zootopia and
today we're going to be drawing officer
benjamin clawhauser
with clawhauser
he's this really soft
lovable big hearted guy
and
almost every one of these characters
starts with a circle
so start with a circle on his head but
he has these huge fluffy cheeks
so we like to kind of describe his shape
as like a basketball
sitting in a big bean bag
so the bean bag is his cheeks his head
is the basketball
you kind of see just with those two
things it already starts feeling like
clawhauser paul houser he's got a really
tight collared shirt
so his neck kind of rolls up
right where that shirt gets tight
i call it a shirt
now if we draw this line down the center
of the basketball
and draw one across
[Music]
and draw this little v right here this
is where clawhauser's eyes
are going to sit and this is where his
nose sits
his nose kind of has this butterfly
shape to it
clawhauser
is often surprised
or often happy
so usually drawn with his eyebrows
up like this
and then if you were to draw a little
road
right from the tips of his eyebrows down
to his
nose
this is where a lot of his spots live
right in between the eyes like this
now his eyes
got a little bit of an eyelash
and come down to a point right where we
drew those lines
clawhouser is always happy so we're
going to draw a big smile on him
draw a line coming off his nose this is
the corner of his mouth
usually see his bottom teeth
peeking out just a little bit
and then he has this dark lip on the
bottom
just coloring the inside of his
mouth dark so you know that's the inside
of his mouth
[Music]
and then his ears
this line that we drew his ears are
going to sit
pretty much
from a line from his nose all the way
through his eye and out to the side of
his head
drawing these fluffy ears
there's nothing that really says cat
quite like big whiskers so right here
three little spots for the whiskers
three on this side
big long whiskers
he's also got a few whiskers up on the
top of his head
but he still doesn't feel quite like
clawhauser yet and that's because he
doesn't have his spots
[Music]
so if we draw a line from the corner of
his mouth
down to his shirt
on either side
this whole
area around the bottom of his mouth
where his beard might be
that is the no spot zone everywhere else
open game for spots
around his eyes is also a no spot zone
a little road we drew and around his
eyes no spots going there
and then the most noticeable spot on
clawhauser is right here on his cheek
a spot you may all recognize
and that goes right there
drawing his nostrils
and that
is how i draw a clawhauser
[Music]
[Music]
my name is corey loftis and i'm the art
director of characters on zootopia and
today we're going to be drawing flash
so with most of our characters in
zootopia we're going to start with a
circle for flash's head now flash is a
sloth
who works at the
dmv and he's one of the first people
that
nick and judy
meet once they start working together
so flash
is not a whole lot more than a circle
if you imagine this tube coming out of
the back
now flash is
very very slow
extremely slow so in his design i tried
to make everything about him seem slow
so his eyes are literally sliding off
his face
so i've drawn them like eggs sliding off
a plate
and flash's mouth
it's kind of like drawing a little
beak it's much more like a little parrot
beak
than it is our mouths
so it comes down to a little point and
draw the corner of his mouth now sloths
have like this cool bandit mask
that goes right over their eyes
and fall right off the sides of their
face
kind of like a raccoon
and that's a lot darker
than the rest of their face i'm going to
color this in a little bit darker here
around his eyes
then his eyes
or his pupils
sit right under his lid like this
i like to draw him with his mouth open
just a little bit
like he's about to start saying
something
and you've caught him just as he starts
talking
now flashes
got hair on top of his head
and when i was trying to figure out what
sort of hairstyle flash would have
and byron was talking to me about the
character i kept noticing our director's
haircut
and flash and byron ended up getting the
same haircut
so let's part it in the middle
comes down on each side
now sloths have really thick coarse hair
it's not soft like a like a rabbit or
even a cat or a bear it's really really
coarse so you notice a lot of flash's
hairs more than you do on other animals
dry flash's hair can be really fun so
i'm just going to go ahead and draw in
all his hair
something about it makes it seem more
like him
and then the first time
i drew flash
[Music]
i had fun imagining that he was just
about to say something but people kept
interrupting him
so he's politely held up his hand
for a chance to speak
sloths have these really
long claws so that they can
hang on to branches
don't have to worry about falling so we
didn't lose flash's claws
flash was a lot of fun design
with a lot of characters on zootopia you
never really knew what they were going
to have to do for the story you didn't
know if they were going to have to
climb over a wall or or
you know jump from a great height or or
try to reach
something on a high wall or you never
knew what they were gonna do they might
they might skate they might
open a door but with flash i knew he
wasn't gonna do much
if anything so i knew exactly
what he needed to do and it made his
design a lot more fun because
i already had a plan of what he was
going to have to do in the film
and there he is
[Music]
hi everybody i'm byron howard i'm one of
the directors on zootopia and today
we're going to learn how to draw judy
hopps when i think about judy i think
she's very
optimistic very bright very intelligent
very strong-willed and so you know she
has a very bright feature so the first
thing i do
is i kind of create this
kind of gumdrop shape
because i love
candy
i love food that is sugary
and so i create this little gum drop
shape see it looks a little bit like a
gum drop here's a gum drop for example
kinda like that so judy has
kind of a tall forehead like this
kind of wide cheeks like many many
rabbits we looked at many real rabbits
to design judy
and we discovered they all have adorable
cheeks so we knew that had to be part of
her
uh she and then once you get this kind
of gumdrop shape in place
i usually put the nose in there because
the nose is a nice anchor point that
tells me which way she's going to look
so judy's looking down to the right and
then once i have the nose then i can use
that to kind of focus these lines that
kind of determine where her eyes
go
and her eyes if you think about them as
being a little almond shaped
it makes them feel like they kind of sit
into her skull a little bit more which
is nice
[Music]
these nice kind of lashes and so again
you say again a very simple gumdrop
shape little tiny nose nice big eyes
and then she has this cute little
teeny tiny mouth
that makes her just adorable and glenn
keane
the great glenn keane who did ariel
and the beast
and is a good friend of mine
taught me that to make a drawing of a
mouth look really good you put these
little dark corners
that kind of makes it feel like it's
tucking back and shadowing it so and he
was right glenn was right
he's always right anyway
and uh from that point well rabbits
don't look like rabbits unless they have
ears and so usually what i do with the
ears is i find
this flow from the back of her head no
because it feels good to uh
especially with disney characters to
have that flow coming off of the sk of
the cranium which goes like this see
this nice big big line
big relaxed swoop and just coming right
back off the jaw and then if you just
imagine that other ear being attached
back there
on the other side of her head you can
kind of
knock that in back there you can do it
nice and rough like that it's no
pressure drawing is fun it's relaxing
it's like meditation just relax
and then uh usually i do the same thing
i kind of flow off the front of her face
down into her neck and into her collar
and again if you can kind of just find
these uh these flowing lines finding
these sort of flowing calligraphic lines
gives your drawing a nice grace and ties
it all together really nicely and you
are welcome to
shade judy she's a gray gray rabbit so
if you'd like to shade her
shading is also nice
and then she has these sort of beautiful
uh dark
ear tips right up there
so if you can do this at parties you
will be so popular
and people will buy you things
and be your friend and then uh and
usually when you do a drawing you have
to let people know who did it so i'm
byron so i'll sign this
byron
did this there we go
all right anyway so this judy hopps
[Applause]
just because they have
because you have it up here you can do
what you're seeing here
is i've got a 2d animation desk set up
and this is what uh
this is how i learned to animate this is
what the same setup here was the same
that they used
back in the 30s and the 40s when they
were making
the 2d films with waltz across the
street and it's all the same
technology it's just these little peg
holes in the bottom of this paper and
it's it's always great just to sit down
and start moving
the character's face around it's like
once you have a solid drawing of hops
then you can start to play around with
her expressions you can kind of start to
squash and stretch things and our cg
animators do exactly the same thing they
start with a solid pose of hops in the
computer and then they start building up
their keys
and you can figure out how to make her
kind of squinch and kind of get
different expressions she can look angry
happy sad
but uh that's the great thing is that
all of what we do
at disney whether it's cg or drawn has
this great tradition of
art that's been around
at our studio for
about almost like 100 years and so and
we we love that we love that i love that
tradition i love the fact that
every time i do another one of these
films
the uh the women and men in our
animation department teach me something
new
and they keep getting better and better
[Music]
hi everybody i'm byron howard one of the
directors on zootopia and today i'm
going to teach you how to draw nick
wilde nicholas p wilde get ready here we
go so here we go okay so judy has i told
you like that kind of gum drop head
right
like that well nick he's a fox and foxes
are carnivores and they have to be a
little more sleek so fox's heads are
shaped a little bit more kind of like a
flattened
football so where judy is this nick is
more like this you know here's here's
judy internet
there we go and nick is more like this
there we go
like this kind of thing oh see looks
sneakier already he's more streamlined
he's got a lower forehead that sort of
thing so
if we do a big nick here we go so we
need the same thing so do this nice big
simple shape
this is kind of this sort of flattened
football a little more on the bottom
than the top there you go and uh once
you have that then i usually go with
nick to the eyes and we got a lot of
this from jason bateman because jason
does these little looks where he looks
so sneaky
but he's so nice
he's a very nice nice man but he can be
very sneaky
and so we try to get this sort of half
lidded look on nick
a lot and that gave us a lot for his
expression so that
really was great because people say wow
i look at that fox and that looks just
like jason bateman and it's true because
the animators will watch
jason record
and they'll try to get his personality
into
the drawings and the animation
performance and so i got the football
shape i put my eyes in place got these
little slanty
sort of almond eyes
and give them make a little sneaky a
little half littered usually if you keep
those eyelids really high keep those
eyebrows really high because he's not
mean he's just sneaky there's a
difference
and then if i usually i usually put the
nose out here somewhere and he's got a
long snout so that's now it's going to
stick way out far it's coming at you
in three quarters it's like 3d here it
comes like toward you and then i usually
kind of just put in that mouth there it
is
and a lot of what i do on this mouth
is from chuck jones you all know who
chuck jones is chuck jones one of my
heroes to these amazing cartoons growing
up with uh
wiley coyote and the roadrunner uh so we
looked at lots of different foxes and
lots of different designs for these
foxes and looked at robin hood
and many many cartoon designs from all
around the world and as we go you know
you can sort of build nick's expression
and you can put his ears coming off the
back of his head you know he's kind of
sleek so think of think of nick like a
sports car he's like a sleek
sleek sports
car and every time you find a line you
can kind of bring it off of
another line that you've already drawn
and that'll make it feel kind of
graceful
and you can kind of make that flow down
into his
body he kind of has that kind of puffed
out chest sometimes and then you can
kind of drop his shoulders off the
top like that maybe cross his arms like
that
and again the looser you are
the better you'll feel
because it shouldn't be pressure you
could have fun you should just learn to
flow with the drawings just let it
happen
not think about it too much
and he also has a tie
down there oh i'm not great at drawing
ties i'll just draw that real quick and
say it's art see it's rough it's art
that's fine anyway and nick also has
this beautiful kind of orange red color
and you can shade them in a little bit
if you just have a
black pencil like i do
a little bit of that makes it look a
little more finished
that kind of thing
looks very sneaky but charming just like
the real jason bateman
and uh and then when you get in okay
that's about as much as i want to do
with nick then you sign it sign your
name
and go show someone because they'll be
very proud of you
that's and that's how to draw a nickel
[Music]
in the world of zootopia humans never
happened
which makes zootopia a modern civilized
world that is entirely animal
that is an animal
animals in zootopia are anthropomorphic
that is just a big fancy word that means
they walk around on two feet
they do not go to work nude
thank you
[Applause]
almost that's got it
and they use technology
[Music]
okay there are mammals from all over the
globe in zootopia
large and small fast and slow
but the truth is
zootopia isn't perfect and just like our
world not everyone gets along
especially natural enemies
which can create some
issues
but nature always gives animals special
skills to survive and while one may have
amazing night vision
another may have incredible hearing
and an air-powered elephant tranquilizer
so now you know zootopia
like nothing you've seen before
[Music]
