Welcome to the English podcast, a 00:00
podcast designed to make English a part 00:02
of your life. 00:06
My name is Evie from the YouTube channel 00:07
English with Evie. And it's great to 00:11
have you here today for podcast episode 00:15
one. 00:19
Podcast episode one. Um, we're making 00:20
this podcast today because in my opinion 00:24
podcasts are one of the best ways to 00:28
improve your English, especially if you 00:32
are a busy person, if you are an adult 00:36
or a busy student. I swear listening to 00:40
podcasts is going to improve your 00:44
English so much. I will explain a little 00:47
bit of my reasoning later. So, the 00:51
reason why I think this later on, but 00:54
I first thought that maybe I could 00:58
introduce myself. Maybe this is your 01:00
first time meeting me or you've seen me 01:02
from my YouTube videos, but you don't 01:05
really know 01:08
who I am or maybe maybe you don't care. 01:09
I will explain anyway. I'll try and keep 01:13
it keep it very brief. Um, but an 01:15
introduction is a good way to warm up 01:19
with English, too, because I think most 01:23
of us probably could introduce ourselves 01:25
in English, so it will be easy easy to 01:29
start with. So, 01:32
my name is Evie. 01:34
I am an English teacher from the UK. 01:36
Uh, lots of people ask me where exactly 01:40
my accent is from. So, I am from a place 01:43
called Cornwall. Um, but I don't really 01:48
have a Cornish accent. Um, 01:51
I do have a Cornish accent when I speak 01:54
to somebody else who has one. 01:57
So, if I speak to my family, I might 02:01
have more of a Cornish accent, but when 02:03
I'm teaching, when I'm making these 02:06
videos, uh my accent is more like a very 02:08
typical southern English accent. 02:13
I've also been told it's a bit London in 02:17
some places. My accent is not like 02:20
Cockney, obviously, but just like a lot 02:22
of how a lot of people speak in London, 02:25
uh which makes sense. I lived in London 02:28
for 4 years while I was at university. 02:30
I did, um my degree at the London School 02:34
of Economics in history. 02:37
So, anyway, that's why if I sound a 02:40
little bit like I'm from London, that is 02:43
uh 02:45
that's probably why. 02:46
As a person, um things that I am 02:48
interested in personally, I really love 02:51
writing. I'm a big writer. I love 02:55
writing when I get time. Uh I like 02:58
writing stories, I like writing poetry, 03:01
I like writing articles. Anything 03:04
creative is just a lot of fun for me, 03:07
including like making YouTube videos or 03:11
podcasts. I really enjoy that as well. 03:14
Anything creative. Um I also I just 03:16
really enjoy language in general. So, I 03:20
like language learning. I love reading 03:25
as well. I don't get a lot of time to 03:28
read these days. I think many of us 03:30
probably feel that way, right? We don't 03:33
read enough. But, I love reading. I want 03:36
to read more. I just need more time. 03:40
So, I've been listening to to lots of 03:43
audiobooks at the moment. I recently 03:45
finished one called Daisy Jones and the 03:49
which is a book by 03:53
I don't know what the author is. Taylor 03:55
Who the author is? Taylor Reed, 03:58
something like this. It was a good It 04:01
was a good book. If you want a random 04:02
recommendation, 04:05
>> [laughter] 04:06
>> Daisy Jones and the Six is is very good. 04:07
So, languages, I mentioned that's 04:10
something I like. Um 04:13
I have only learned one language to a 04:14
point where I could have a conversation, 04:18
which is Spanish. 04:21
I learned Spanish because my boyfriend 04:23
is from Spain. So, that's the reason why 04:26
I learned that. I started learning that 04:29
when I was 20 04:31
two years old or 23 years old. So, I'd 04:35
never learned a language before that 04:39
moment. So, I feel very passionate about 04:42
adult language learning, and this is why 04:45
I started making videos. Um it's because 04:48
I work with adult students. So, I wanted 04:51
to create content online that would be 04:55
interesting for adult learners. 04:58
I think there's a real um 05:01
there's a real tendency for people to 05:04
patronize adult learners a little bit, 05:06
especially with languages. They say, 05:09
"Ah, you know, if you're an adult 05:12
learner, then watch um 05:15
Peppa Pig." 05:17
You know, that stupid kids cartoon. And 05:19
honestly, 05:22
are you going to make a 40-year-old man 05:23
watch Peppa Pig? 05:26
It's so boring. 05:28
And so many like so much of learning a 05:31
language is being interested. You need 05:33
to really care because you are going to 05:35
study that language for years, like 05:38
maybe forever. 05:42
And I tell you now, if you try and learn 05:43
a language by watching Peppa Pig, 05:46
maybe you love Peppa Pig, I don't know, 05:50
but most people will be bored out of 05:52
their minds. They will be bored out of 05:56
their minds and they are not going to 05:58
study English because why why would you 06:00
work for 06:02
10 hours, work 10 hours, come back home, 06:05
you know, 06:08
do house chores and then watch Peppa 06:09
Pig? It's not going to happen. 06:11
Well, maybe it is. If you've done that, 06:15
honestly, 06:17
please tell me how that was. 06:18
Because you are another level of 06:20
motivated if you can do that, but I I 06:23
could not do that, so 06:26
that's why I I started this channel. 06:28
It's to do with like language learning, 06:30
languages, 06:33
adult education. 06:35
It's kind of my thing. I'm into it. I 06:37
like it. 06:38
Um 06:39
Outside of languages, reading and 06:41
writing, maybe something less practical 06:44
that I enjoy. I love pop stars. I've 06:48
always loved pop stars, but I love girl 06:52
pop stars. So, I love like Britney 06:54
Spears in the 2000s. I loved her. 06:57
Well, I was like a child, but 07:01
I love her now. I look back on those 07:03
clips and I love Britney Spears. I love 07:05
like modern-day pop stars like um Cat's 07:08
Eye. There's a girl group, like a pop 07:13
group, called Cat's Eye. I don't like 07:15
their music, but I just like them, the 07:17
people, the girls. Um 07:20
I like Who else do I like? 07:23
I really like Chappell Roan, for 07:26
example, another great pop star who has 07:28
come up recently, or Sabrina Carpenter. 07:31
I really like her. 07:34
This actually reminds me that um 07:36
some people have been commenting in my 07:38
comment section saying that I look like 07:41
Avril Lavigne. 07:44
>> [laughter] 07:45
>> I'm laughing um because if you are 07:46
listening to this on Spotify, 07:49
uh I don't look like Avril Lavigne. 07:52
>> [laughter] 07:54
>> She's the She's not a pop star. She's a 07:55
Does that count as rock rock pop? Uh 07:58
from like the 2010s. 08:01
And we look we don't look alike in my 08:03
opinion. I think we're both just like 08:05
white women with with blonde hair. Maybe 08:08
you think I look like Avril Lavigne. I 08:12
love that. It's a great like it's a huge 08:13
compliment cuz I think she's iconic. 08:15
She's iconic, but I don't look like 08:19
Avril Lavigne. Or maybe I do. Maybe I do 08:22
and I just don't 08:24
I don't see it. 08:26
Um 08:28
Anyway, couple things I dislike or maybe 08:29
one maybe two Yeah, one or two things I 08:32
dislike. Um I hate running. 08:34
I hate running, but I go running 08:37
because I work a desk job. So, I spend 08:40
every single day 08:43
sat down at my desk. 08:44
And that sucks. So, like I get literally 08:48
like 08:50
what maybe 1,000 steps a day. 08:51
That's not okay. 08:55
Honestly, that's not okay. You need to 08:58
walk more than 1,000 steps a day. So, I 09:01
sometimes go running. 09:05
I don't run very far and I don't run 09:07
very fast. And sometimes I walk. 09:10
Actually, I walk a lot of it. 09:13
>> [laughter] 09:16
>> But I still hate it. Um so, I hate 09:16
running. I also hate meat. So, I hate 09:18
beef, which is from a cow. I hate pork, 09:23
which comes from pigs. I hate chicken, 09:26
which comes from chickens. 09:29
Uh because I am a vegetarian. So, I 09:31
don't eat meat. I don't eat fish, um I 09:34
don't eat shellfish either, like crabs 09:38
or lobster or shrimp. Um I don't eat any 09:40
of it. 09:44
But, I do eat um eggs and cheese because 09:46
I'm a vegetarian, not a vegan. I 09:50
actually I eat a lot of cheese, which 09:53
I probably should give up uh those 09:56
things, but I really like eating cheese. 09:59
So, I haven't done that. 10:01
Anyway, maybe that's enough about me. Um 10:04
I wanted to convince you that this 10:07
podcast is something that you should 10:10
listen to, something you should engage 10:13
with. It's something that should become 10:15
a part of your English study routine. 10:17
If you can understand me right now, 10:20
honestly, your level of English is very 10:24
good. It's very good because especially 10:28
listening to something with no prompts, 10:31
with no pictures to help you understand 10:35
the meaning, um that's quite difficult 10:38
to do. It's very difficult just to 10:41
listen. 10:43
And listening to a podcast is something 10:44
that you unlock. It's something that 10:48
you're able to do usually when you are 10:51
around intermediate in a language. So, 10:54
when you have an intermediate level, 10:57
then you can understand podcasts. And I 11:01
would say this is a game changer. 11:04
It's a game changer. 11:08
Why is it a game changer? It's a game 11:10
changer because it means that you can 11:12
now study passively. 11:15
So, you can study without staring at the 11:18
screen or focusing 100% 11:22
on a video. Instead, it means that you 11:26
can now study English while you are 11:29
doing other things. For example, you can 11:32
listen to English while you commute to 11:35
work, you can listen to English while 11:38
you are on the train, while you are 11:41
driving, while you are doing dishes. 11:43
And if you are an adult who does not 11:46
have a lot of time in the evenings to 11:50
listen to 11:52
Peppa Pig or whatever stupid thing you 11:54
have to watch. Um 11:57
It means that you can study while 12:00
getting something else done. 12:02
And at least for me, with Spanish, the 12:06
moment that I could understand podcasts, 12:09
it changed 12:12
it changed my level. Because I went from 12:14
studying Spanish or listening to Spanish 12:17
for maybe one or two hours a day. I was 12:19
pretty intense, to be honest. 12:24
To, you know, three or sometimes even 12:26
four hours a day, because when I was 12:29
walking, I had a podcast on in Spanish. 12:32
Or when I was cleaning my bedroom, I 12:35
would have a podcast on in Spanish. It 12:38
literally meant that I was engaging with 12:41
the language so much more. And I was 12:45
really training my ear. I was training 12:48
my ear to understand just the noises, no 12:52
help from pictures or actions. 12:56
That's why it's so difficult. So, that's 13:00
why podcasts usually come or um that's 13:02
why podcasts usually come when you are 13:07
at an intermediate level, because you 13:10
are only relying on what you can 13:13
understand with your ear. 13:15
I also want you to understand, because 13:19
if you are only listening to this while 13:23
you do something else. 13:26
My videos might be too easy for you, but 13:28
focusing on the podcast might feel more 13:32
difficult. This is just from personal 13:36
experience, but I find that if I'm 13:39
driving, I find it more difficult to 13:43
understand content that usually I 13:46
understand no problem. I usually need 13:49
something easier because my brain is 13:52
having to focus on two different things. 13:54
So, if you have a good level of English 13:56
or maybe you understand my videos, but 13:59
now this podcast feels difficult, don't 14:02
worry. That's completely normal. Um and 14:06
just trust that with time, it will get 14:09
easier. It's going to get easier. 14:13
This just leaves me to maybe explain a 14:15
little bit what this podcast will be 14:18
like. 14:21
Uh 14:22
I don't know, really. I haven't got a 14:23
very specific structure. So, feel free 14:26
to comment if there is something in 14:30
particular that you would like to see. 14:32
This is not going to be a weekly podcast 14:35
yet. Maybe by the time you listen to 14:38
this, I have made it weekly, but for now 14:41
it's going to be 14:44
as and when, we say. It's going to be as 14:46
and when. That means it's going to be 14:49
whenever I have the time. Um for 14:52
example, you would say 14:55
I go running as and when. It means I go 14:57
running whenever I can. It's not a 15:00
priority, it's just something I do when 15:02
I'm able to. So, this podcast will be 15:05
uploaded as and when. 15:08
Uh but hopefully this was enjoyable for 15:10
you and maybe a little bit of a 15:13
challenge. 15:15
But I encourage you to engage with the 15:17
podcast, to listen to multiple episodes 15:20
and if you do not listen to podcasts 15:23
already, 15:26
hopefully I have convinced you to make 15:27
it a part of your routine. 15:30
Um, but thank you very, very much for 15:32
listening 15:35
and I will see you in the next episode 15:36
which should already be up. 15:39
See you then. 15:43

presentarme. Tal vez esta sea la
primera vez que me conoces o me has visto
en mis videos de YouTube, pero
realmente no sabes
quién soy o tal vez tal vez no te importe.
comenzar. Entonces,
mi nombre es Evie.
Soy profesora de inglés del Reino Unido.
Eh, mucha gente me pregunta de dónde viene
exactamente mi acento. Entonces, soy de un lugar
llamado Cornwall. Um, pero en realidad no tengo
acento de Cornualles. Um,
uh
probablemente ese sea el motivo.
Como persona, um cosas que me
interesan personalmente, realmente me encanta
escribir. Soy un gran escritor. Me encanta
escribir cuando tengo tiempo. Uh, me gusta
escribir historias, me gusta escribir poesía,
me gusta escribir artículos. Cualquier cosa
creativa es muy divertida para mí,
incluso hacer vídeos de YouTube o
podcasts. Realmente disfruto eso también.
Cualquier cosa creativa. Entonces,
...
me gusta aprender idiomas. También me encanta leer
. No tengo mucho tiempo para
leer estos días. Creo que muchos de nosotros
probablemente nos sentimos así, ¿verdad? No
leemos lo suficiente. Pero me encanta leer. Quiero que
lea más. Sólo necesito más tiempo.
He estado escuchando muchos
audiolibros en este momento. Hace poco
terminé uno llamado Daisy Jones y el
que es un libro de
no sé cuál es el autor. Taylor
¿Quién es el autor? Taylor Reed,
algo como esto. Fue un buen
fue un buen libro. Si quieres una recomendación
aleatoria,
>> [risas]
>> Daisy Jones and the Six es muy buena.
Entonces, idiomas, mencioné que es
algo que me gusta. Um
, entonces mira a
Peppa Pig".
Ya sabes, esa estúpida caricatura de niños. Y
sinceramente,
a ver Peppa Pig?
no van a
estudiar inglés porque ¿por qué
trabajarías
10 horas, trabajarías 10 horas, volverías a casa,
Pig? No va a suceder.
Bueno, tal vez lo sea. Si has hecho eso,
honestamente,
idiomas,
educación de adultos.
Es algo mío. Me gusta. Me gusta
.
Um
Recuerdo esos clips
y amo a Britney Spears. Amo
, llamado Cat's Eye. No me gusta
Um
Me gusta ¿Quién más me gusta?
Me gusta mucho Chappell Roan, por ejemplo
, otra gran estrella del pop que
apareció recientemente, o Sabrina Carpenter.
Realmente me gusta.
Avril Lavigne.
>> [risas]
>> Me estoy riendo porque si estás
escuchando esto en Spotify,
uh, no me parezco a Avril Lavigne.
>> [risas]
Me
Avril Lavigne. O tal vez sí. Tal vez hago
y simplemente no
No lo veo.
Um
no me gustan. Um, odio correr.
Odio correr, pero lo hago
porque trabajo en un escritorio. Entonces, paso
todos los días
sentado en mi escritorio.
Y eso apesta. Entonces, obtengo literalmente
como
qué tal vez 1000 pasos por día.
Eso no está bien.
Honestamente, eso no está bien. Necesitas
caminar más de 1000 pasos al día. Entonces, a veces
salgo a correr.
No corro muy lejos y no corro
muy rápido. Y a veces camino.
En realidad, camino mucho.
>> [risas]
>> Pero todavía lo odio. Bueno, odio
correr. También odio la carne. Entonces, odio
carne de res, que es de vaca. Odio la carne de cerdo,
que proviene de los cerdos. Odio el pollo,
que proviene de las gallinas.
Uh porque soy vegetariano. Entonces,
no como carne. No como pescado, um,
tampoco como mariscos, como cangrejos
o langosta o camarones. Um, no como nada de {7}.
...
Pero sí como huevos y queso porque
soy vegetariano, no vegano.
en realidad como mucho queso, y
probablemente debería dejar esas
cosas, pero me gusta mucho comer queso.
Entonces, no he hecho eso.
podcast, a escuchar varios episodios
y si aún no escuchas los podcasts
,
espero haberte convencido de que
los conviertas en parte de tu rutina.
Um, pero muchas, muchas gracias por
escuchar
y te veré en el próximo episodio
que ya debería estar publicado.
Nos vemos entonces.
