Hello
A Korean podcast spoken in Korean
Welcome to Sokdak Bokdak
How was everyone last week?
It's really midwinter now, right?
I'm currently filming a video on Wednesday.
They say the temperature in Korea will
drop to -12 degrees Celsius tomorrow, Thursday
This is a real cold wave, right?
Moreover, the flu is prevalent in Korea right now
The number of flu patients has doubled in a week
I think this is the first time that the flu has been talked about so seriously on the news
...
I hope people living in Korea
get the vaccine if possible
And you should always wash your hands when you go out and come back, right?
And it may be inconvenient,
When you go out to a place with a lot of people,
it's a good idea to wear a mask as well
During the last Corona,
everyone had a hard time wearing masks
That's why I don't want to wear a mask either.
And thanks to Corona(?) in its own way
There are a lot of good masks out there these days
These masks are thin but have good filters.
So, I think it would be a good idea to go into a convenience store,
and buy a mask,
and take one with you when you go to places with lots of people, like buses or subways.
...
And since it's already winter in your country,
when the weather gets colder and chilly,
it's easy to get sick
So, I hope you all take good care of your health.
That's all for me to say hello to you. I said hello
and let's start talking about the topic of this next podcast
.
In the last video, I talked about
my New Year's resolution.
Looking at the comments, there were a lot of people who said they would study a language as their New Year's resolution
...
There were people saying they wanted to learn not just Korean,
Japanese, Chinese, and English, but various
languages
I thought it was really cool
So today, let's talk about the advantages of studying languages.
I'm going to talk about it
It's not just about eating delicious food
It has these benefits
So, they say it has these good effects! If you eat it knowing that
it's more enjoyable and delicious
So, I'm going to talk about this
on today's podcast
Now then,
let's start talking
again today with joy in our hearts.
A while ago, I saw a comment on YouTube
I don't know why I'm learning Korean
It was a comment like this
I think you might think so
Because studying the language isn't necessarily necessary
Because I don't necessarily have to study a foreign language, but I have my native language
I can just talk to people in my native language
And especially English-speaking people
I don't think I feel the need to study a foreign language even more
...
There is already a lot of content in English,
and a lot of content is translated into English, so
is there really a need to learn another foreign language?
You might be thinking
However, even though studying a language is not essential,
there are definitely advantages to studying a language
So today, I'm going to talk about these advantages
...
Well, I did some research
First of all, the advantage of studying a foreign language for the first time is that
<helps your brain health>
Now, what's in your head? Brain
This is called the brain
This brain has to be healthy too, right?
Not only must your body be healthy, but your brain must also be healthy
I think we can think good thoughts
and play a lot of fun games
Among the things I looked into, there is a certain test
They did something called an intelligence tracking test in Scotland
What is an intelligence tracking test?
Intelligence, the ability to recognize something or know something is called
<intelligence>
I tracked this intelligence
I followed it
What happened when I followed it like this
There was a test result that said
I took the same person
and followed him later to see his intelligence when he was in his 70s
I tested my intelligence
twice.
What do you think happened?
Has your intelligence decreased?
In fact, most people
say that their intelligence was just the same
They said it was the same
They said that their intelligence was almost the same whether they were teenagers or in their 70s
...
But strangely, there were people whose intelligence increased in their 70s
...
They became smarter in their 70s
What kind of people are these people?
Can you guess?
Yes
I think you know because you heard today's topic
Those are the people who studied languages and foreign languages
What about people who studied foreign languages later when they got older
Their intelligence increased
When you learn a foreign language like this,
you don't just learn another foreign
language
You actually become smarter
and your brain improves like this Because I use it
because I get to exercise my brain
it also helps prevent things like dementia
...
In the past, I thought I had to do everything I wanted to do when I was young
...
It wasn't a good idea
I felt a lot of pressure, or something like that
If I didn't do everything I wanted to do before I got older,
I thought I wouldn't be able to do it later.
I think that made me very unhappy
But these days, my thoughts have changed a lot
These days, we live to be 100 years old
In Korea, we often say
100 years old, because we live to be 100 years old, so we say this is the 100-year age
...
Do you often use this expression in your country too?
Anyway, with the advancement of medical science these days,
we are in the age of 100
there are a lot of stories about living a long time
But when you live this long,
the life of an old person can continue to be a bit longer
When I live as an old person, I want to live happily
Of course it's good to be happy when you've lived already
Even when I'm 90,
I want to eat delicious food
And when I see pretty clothes, I feel like I want to wear those clothes
and go to nice places
I don't think those desires will suddenly disappear as I get older
...
Because when I was young, I thought
my thoughts would change a lot when I became an adult,
and I would just lose a lot of my greed.
But now that I've become an adult,
I'm younger than I thought.
My thoughts don't change that much from what I thought back then
Of course, there are a lot of new things I think about,
For example, when I was young,
I liked things like this, and when I lay down to sleep,
I really liked the smell of detergent on the blanket.
...
...
...
I don't think the things I like will suddenly disappear
So even as I get older
So that I can do many of the things I like
I want to make my body and
brain healthy
So, in order to take care of my health,
I always go to yoga 3 times a week, right?
Even after going to yoga
I saw a lot of results
Before, I had to take a nap a day, right?
But these days, even if I don't have to take a nap,
I'm very healthy and doing something
I often feel like it's not that hard
And on the weekends, my husband and I
like to go out far and wide and take walks here and there
When we come home after a walk like that
I usually have to lie down for a bit
So I just ordered delivery food and did that
But these days, I go out a lot. Even if I walk around
I don't get that tired
So I put in a lot of my favorite vegetables
and the time to cook healthy dinner has increased a lot
I see this effect
As I maintain my health well,
I get to do more things I want to do
Oh, I also take care of my brain health
I can comfortably do the things I want to do when I get older
I thought I wanted to live like this
Even on my podcast,
there are people of so many different ages
Ages are all about a spectrum of ages
There are people of various ages in this world
people of lower age, people of higher age
There are people of many different ages
I thought that studying this language would be done by a lot of people in the younger age group
and lower age group
I thought about it
because when you look at K-pop or dramas,
there are usually a lot of young people in them,
and there are a lot of stories like that that young people can relate to
.
I thought that the people who like such content and
want to learn Korean
are mostly young people.
But there are a lot of people of an older age group than I thought
...
If you look at the comments, there are people who say things like, “I’m a grandfather”
“It’s my 60th birthday”
...
What motivated these people to want to learn Korean?
What motivates them to study hard
I think it would be great if you could let me know in the comments
...
Just like those people
Even when I get older, I feel like I’m really curious. Knitting,
or something else?
Like a hobby like reading
I also want to study languages in different languages
It occurred to me
People who are this old
People leave comments saying “I am this old”
...
I guess this is a huge thing to me
It became motivation and support
Even when I get older, I do fun things like this
There are a lot of people who live like that.
I thought I could live like that in the future.
Hmm, how can I say it?
I have more time in my life and it feels really good.
Now, shall we talk about the second advantage of learning a foreign language
?
The second advantage of learning a foreign language is that
it helps you think rationally.
Unlike emotions,
reason is related to the brain.
Emotions are the mind, and reason is the brain, right?
For most things,
it's the most reasonable to think calmly in your head like this,
Let's do this first, then do that like this.
It's the most reasonable
It's the best way
But sometimes,
There are times when my mind goes out first
Even if I get angry about something
Rather than yelling at that person right away
“I feel like this and that
I have this problem when you do this
I want you to do this”
You can say it well, but
you get angry
There may be times when you just start yelling
But when you get upset like this
once If you think in a foreign language
you can think a little more calmly
Your mind and your native language are so close
When you get angry or feel sad
You can immediately talk in your native language
But if you want to speak in a foreign language
You have to think with your head one more time
So instead of expressing your feelings right away
you have to think one more time
What is this feeling I feel?
Why did I feel this way?
Because you think about it a little more
, you can have a more proper conversation with the other person.
And if you just express it like this in your native language,
Well, what can I say, you may end up hurting others more than you
thought.
So in times like this, “Huh, what am I feeling right now?”
I think there are times when thinking in a foreign language
can be helpful
Of course, expressing your feelings in your native language
doesn't mean it's bad
But sometimes, if you think in a foreign language,
I used to just express my feelings out of habit
I think I can feel what these feelings are
in more detail
And also, when you have to think really rationally.
Isn't it time to go shopping?
It's good to buy only what you really need
But when I go shopping,
I think I often make impulse purchases
Have you heard of <impulse buying>?
<Impulse> is a desire to suddenly and momentarily
make me want to do something
And <purchase> is buying something, which is called a purchase
So, if it is an impulse purchase,
buying something that is not really necessary
just because you suddenly want to buy it at a moment's notice
is called an impulse purchase
Now, when you want to buy something on impulse like this
Do you have any?
I have this sometimes too.
Personally, when that happens, I put it in the shopping cart in advance
and think about it a little more.
When you think about it like this, try to think in a foreign language
why you need it
I think it will be helpful
If you think more rationally in a foreign language
That strong feeling of just wanting to buy it
calms down a little.
You'll be able to think more calmly
And when writing a diary,
it's good to write down your concerns
in your native language, but
if you write it down in a foreign language,
it can help you think a little more rationally
...
If you think rationally like this,
you'll just feel upset and sad
Some solution or solution that wasn't visible because of this
It may seem
So, when you get too carried away and emotional
, I think it would be fun to have some fun and think 'Why is that like that?'
...
...
...
...
...
...
It means that I can look at my world
If I learn a foreign language
I think I will be able to see the world with different eyes
...
So, “Learning a foreign language is
There is a saying, “It’s like having another soul.”
When you think in a foreign language,
I think there are things that really make you think differently.
In the last podcast, I told you that there are
various expressions for the color red. Do you remember?
Don’t just know the word red,
dark red, bright red, reddish color
If you know these various words
I told you that the color red appears more diverse than you think
...
We understand something through language
How many colors do you think a rainbow has?
Is it seven colors?
Even in Korea, they say seven
Red, orange, yellow, green
...
And blue, indigo, and purple. There are seven like this.
But in countries like France,
there is no separate word for indigo.
They think there are six colors.
Isn't it amazing?
And traditionally, in Eastern countries like Japan, China, and Korea
...
they thought the rainbow had five colors.
When you think about it and look at the rainbow,
...
doesn't it really look like five colors? This
can change the way we see
Here's another interesting example
They say that Germans and French people
have different feelings when they see the bridge
French people kind of like art,
and since they have this kind of image, they will think
kindly when they see the bridge
I think they will say things like <elegant, beautiful>
And Germany Since people have an image of
being a bit hard,
I think they'll say things like
<hard, sturdy>
when they look at the bridge.
Do you think that too?
But they actually think the opposite.
French people think more like
<hard, sturdy> when they look at the bridge.
And German people think of the bridge more. After seeing it
<It's beautiful, it's elegant>
I think this more and more
Isn't it amazing?
Why do you think that's it?
If you're German or French,
or have spoken German or French
, I think you'll know.
I think it's a very unique culture for Koreans.
European languages are
There are many cases of giving gender to words.
In France, they say leg is a masculine noun
That's why it feels like it's hard and strong
And in Germany,
the word leg is a feminine noun
So, you feel like you have to put words like
<beautiful, elegant>
after feminine nouns like this
Language
has more influence on my thoughts and mind than I thought
...
So when I learn a foreign language,
I can think differently in ways I never thought of
...
While learning Korean,
I can think about things that I couldn't think of in other languages
...
For example,
There is a very unique word in Korea.
The word <tact>
Being tactful refers to paying attention to what other people
think
There are many unique
expressions that come out because of this
For example, “If you pretend, isn’t it pretending?”
There is a saying like this
There is also a saying like “you have good instincts”
“If you pretend, you pretend” What this means is
To break it down a bit,
It feels like this when you see it.
“Can’t you see?”
“You know when you see it.”
It feels like this.
Even if you interpret it that way, it doesn’t completely explain
What does “pretend if you pretend”?
Even if you just look at a few hints, you should still be able to know everything
You should be able to figure out what the situation is right away
That's what I'm saying
Doesn't it seem like a very difficult ability?
In this way, when Korean people
join a group,
what they want in that group
they quickly catch what people think and
have a certain
culture(?) where they hope to fit in well with that.
So, “Isn’t it pretending if you pretend?”
Well, there are expressions like this.
The same goes for the expression “having a good feel”
“having a good feel” means being able to figure out something quickly
...
Thinking whether this will go well or not
Being quick to make predictions like this
People who are good at these things
are said to be “people with a good feel”
In Korea, things flow well like this. I think that understanding
is very important,
and I say those words a lot in certain expressions.
So, if you use this kind of language,
you will be able to behave more tactfully
like Koreans.
Not long ago, while working in the fashion industry,
I taught a student who was studying Korean.
This student thought he wanted to study Korean fashion,
I also studied Korean
I could have studied only Korean fashion
But then,
why Koreans like this kind of fashion
and why these designs are popular
I may have come to understand things like this
a little more lightly
But if I study Korean as well,
I can understand Koreans a little better
So I can also understand Korean fashion
You can understand it more deeply
So I thought that student was really cool
He wanted to understand fashion even more by not only learning about the fashion lightly,
but also learning about the cultures of those countries
...
And of course, rather than just looking at the translated stuff,
you can look at the untranslated stuff
You can find more information
There's no need.
On the other hand, while learning English,
there are times when I feel a little bit of freedom.
Being aware of trends and following certain trends is
a good skill, but
and having the thought that you have to keep following those trends
...
can feel a bit burdensome and stressful.
Of course, on the other hand, isn't it just frustrating if you use Korean?
And that's not true either
Korean is my native language, and
I've thought a lot in this native language, so
I definitely feel a sense of warmth and comfort when speaking in Korean
...
When I think about eating the same food all the time,
isn't it really frustrating?
If we can't go to new places and only eat the same old food
, life gets a bit monotonous
If we do that,
I think we may feel depressed
Eating a variety of foods and going on trips
Experiencing new things
is a really big refresher
Studying languages like this
is a really big refresher
...
I think these things make life happier.
So, I hope that by studying language like this
you can make your life even happier
Actually, today
I wanted to tell you about my personal language study tips
...
But I thought it would be good if I could also tell you about the good points of language study
so I looked it up and found out that there is more to talk about than I thought
...
So next time
How I studied language
What should I do?
I'd like to share some of these personal tips with you
...
Now, there's something else I'd like to tell you.
When you study languages, I hope
you'll let go of the feeling that you have to be too perfect
...
Sometimes, when I look at my students,
there are times when I get a little worried
This thought of wanting to do well
is a good motivation. That's true
If you get stressed out because you want to do too well
You may end up hating language study so much
I think what's important is not just doing really well
Having fun while doing it
You guys are K-pop stars
I think there are people who like it
People like this
When they come to your country
They even greet you in that country's language And
it's a little awkward, but when you try to speak that country's language,
isn't that cute?
It's cute and lovely
Looking at foreigners learning Korean
Koreans feel the same way
Foreigners who learn Korean because they like Korea
I never feel disliked
Of course, there are people who look at it negatively
They make fun of them because they can't do it, right?
Because people like that are really everywhere.
Don't let those people's opinions
enter your precious brain.
It's okay to ignore those people's thoughts.
If there really isn't anything interesting in this world,
why are we making fun of things like this?
You can look at it with pity while thinking
So, everyone, don't worry too much
Even though I'm a little lacking in some areas
It's still cute
Think of it this way
I hope you continue studying with a happy heart
Then, that's all I want to talk about today
Next time, I'll write a podcast script
With a happy heart again I'll be back
Because the weather is getting colder
Everyone, take care of your health.
Of course, there are people in warm countries,
Those people will always take good care of their bodies, too.
I hope we can meet in good health next time
Well, then again today
Thank you so much for listening to the end!
Have a nice day today
Hello!
