Happy Labor Day for those of you in the US and I think some other countries.
00:01
I guess that means alot of you guys and subscribers have to go back to school!
00:04
You have to learn things!
00:08
And all that. I hated school as a kid.
00:09
Well, no, I didn't hate school. I hated homework.
00:12
Which is why I think Finland actually has probably one of the best
00:13
schooling/education programs, because they kinda ban homework.
00:16
But, I'm just saying.
00:18
But yeah, so as you guys know, we just finished the El Salvador video
00:19
and Flag Friday, so that means now, everytime after we finish 4 episodes,
00:22
we gotta take a little time off to research and work on the next 4 episodes.
00:26
But usually when I do that, I kinda leave the channel a little empty
00:30
and I don't really upload anything for a couple of weeks and then you guys get all nervous,
00:34
like, "ah what's going on?"
00:37
So, in the spirit of going back to school,
00:38
I figured, why don't I just kinda take you guys behind the scenes and show you how I do my reseach
00:41
and how I kinda of go about the process of making these videos - it takes alot of work.
00:45
So the first country we're doing is Equatorial Guinea.
00:49
Now, I don't really know alot about this country.
00:52
I know that it's the only Spanish-speaking country in Africa.
00:53
I know that the capital is on an island.
00:57
I think it's called "Bioco" or something.
00:59
I know that there's like something with oil in the country.
01:02
And that's about it. I don't really know anything else.
01:06
So come along, friends! And let's research together!
01:08
Or, you guys can just watch me do research.
01:13
Strap in tight guys, this is gonna be a fascinating journey.
01:15
So the very first thing I usually do is I read my emails that you guys, the geograpeeps,
01:18
send to me if you are from the countries that are coming up in the video series.
01:23
So as you can see, my email, there's a side bar
01:27
with a bunch of folders labelled with countries.
01:29
These are all folders of people that have contacted us from those countries
01:31
who watch the show, you guys, the geograpeeps
01:35
and typically when I need help, I click on one of the folders and I read whatever you guys send me
01:38
and I sometimes use that information in the videos.
01:43
For example, see here, this one is Denmark.
01:45
These people are all from Denmark, or they're Danish, or - I don't know, they're experts of Denmark.
01:48
By the way, shout out to Denmark for being the #1 video with the #1 views!
01:52
As you can see, though, as I scroll down,
01:56
I only have one person that contacted me from Equatorial Guinea.
01:59
His name is Jordi. (rambles a bit about how he doesn't know how to pronounce Spanish names)
02:03
So when he emailed me, I like "YES! You are the first person from Equatorial Guinea and this is a huge honor, nice to meet you hahahaha."
02:10
And then I sent him a ton of questions.
02:17
And then he was like:
02:18
"Okay. I'll get back to you in the next 48 hours."
02:20
So, can't really do much with that. I gotta wait for him to send me some information.
02:21
So in the meantime -
02:26
So, one thing I do when I don't ahve anybody from the country I'm researching
02:27
to contact, is sometimes I usually just call up the embassy in Washington DC and ask them if they can help me.
02:30
It's typically the easiest way to get someone from that country.
02:36
So let's see if we can do that right now!
02:38
Alright... Washington D.C..... Embassy... Ah!
02:40
There we go. And here's the number.
02:45
Alright. Gonna call the embassy in Washington D.C.!
02:47
Alright, I'll put it on speaker.
02:51
"Hello and thanks for calling the embassy of Equatorial Guinea."
02:54
"If you know your party's extension, you may dial it now."
02:57
I don't know anybody.
03:00
"Remain on the line for operator assistance."
03:01
Okay, I'll wait. "Thank you for calling."
03:03
Alright, I'll wait on the line.
03:05
"You have reached the general company mailbox of the embassy of Equatorial Guinea."
03:06
"There's no one here to take your call right now."
03:11
"Please leave your name, number, and a brief message and somebody will return your call as soon as possible."
03:13
So it turns out I didn't realize the embassy is closed right now!
03:18
And it's frustrating because I live on the west coast and they're all the way on the east coast,
03:21
so there's a 3 hour time difference, so it's hard to coordinate. I forgot, it's not 5 PM over there,
03:24
it's - ah! - confusing.
03:30
So I guess now we're gonna have to do some
03:32
- personal research.
03:35
One source is really like to use is CIA World Factbook.
03:37
This is a pretty good one, because they kinda do a general overview on every facet of the country.
03:40
They do the background, the geography, the people, culture, and the economy, government, everything, so -
03:45
CIA World Factbook, let's go.
03:50
Alright, so here we are.
03:51
Equatorial Guinea. Yoo-hoo, yaa-haa.
03:53
Woo-hoo. Maps, flag, alright.
03:55
Ooh, I gotta write that down.
03:57
"190 years of Spanish rule."
04:01
That's going in the script!
04:03
"Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo"
04:05
He made them do what?
04:09
That's another thing I learned. The first president of this country was pretty freaking crazy, like
04:10
I know a lot of dictators are crazy, but this guy was like sociopathic on another level.
04:14
He basically stole the entire treasury and put it in his house... he drove out a third of his entire country...
04:19
Murdering thousands of people. And then there was that incident were he went into the Mailbo Stadium and told his soldiers to dress -
04:27
That's a little too much!
04:32
I'm gonna save that for the episode.
04:34
You'll just have to wait and see what happens.
04:35
Okay, apparentally they are
04:41
one of the richest countries in Africa.
04:43
Gotta love that oil money!
04:46
Making us rich until it dries out!
04:49
(chuckles) There's a tribe called the "Bubi."
04:52
Well, apparently they have this thing called the 2020 plan in which they're trying to diversify their economy
04:54
so that they're not completely dependent on oil.
04:58
All the Gulf countries are trying to do that too, but...
05:03
We'll see how that pans out.
05:05
What else can we find out?
05:07
Okay, so apparently this place is like a haven for primates - there's monkeys, there's mandrils
05:09
There's (?), (?), there's apes, there's gorillas.
05:16
Yet the national animal is the giraffe.
05:20
Tryin' to learn about the country!
05:22
Of Equatorial Guinea!
05:25
I have no rythmn or melody.
05:29
There's also the international pop star Anfibio who toured across Europe.
05:35
Who's also a cardiologist.
05:38
He's a pop star and he's a cardiologist.
05:40
When they dance, they put white powder on th- what?
05:44
I gotta find an image of that.
05:47
Okay, you know what? Why don't we just watch some YouTube videos on Equatorial Guinea, shall we?
05:49
Okay, so let's see.
05:54
"Equatorial guinea..."
05:56
Okay, "Portrait of a Nation: Equatorial Guinea Part 1".
05:59
Okay, that looks like it could probably be a little bit informative. Why not?
06:05
Okay. Oh yeah, there's a beach.
06:09
It's so lovely, and og, people carrying things on their heads.
06:12
We're working hard!
06:15
Everybody's laughing!!
06:17
Laughing, it's such a fun, happy time.
06:18
Jolly, jolly. Let's all tell jokes and be happy together.
06:21
And run and jog on the beach and play music.
06:25
Football, football, football.
06:29
¡Vamos a jugar fútbol! (Let’s play football!)
06:31
Sorry, my neighbors have dogs, it happens every day, I'm so annoyed by it sometimes.
06:34
Okay, so that was cool. Let's move on to another one.
06:38
Okay, here's one. It's called "Malabo-Equatorial guinea" By Arejo Kun.
06:40
Apparently also - I'm looking at the bottom corner,
06:46
it says timepro.tv. So I guess they're also affiliated with this somehow, but
06:49
it's on Arejo Kun's channel. So.. I'm just reviewing it.
06:53
Let's see what this is all about.
06:57
Ooh, wow. I'm guessing that's Malabo, the capital, since the video's called Malabo.
07:03
I'm diggin' this music.
07:09
Driving, driving on the right side of the road.
07:10
I guess that's another fact I learned.
07:13
They drive on the right side.
07:14
Okay, I like this music, but is anybody gonna talk now, or?
07:16
Okay. Cool. Alright, I guess this whole video is just music and stock footage aerial view shots.
07:20
Nothing wrong with that! I'm just saying, you know -
07:27
Sometimes I prefer people talking and learning what's going on IN these shots, but you know..
07:29
Whatever. Okay, what's this video? "Equatorial Guinea - the Gateway to Africa" in English.
07:33
Oh, okay, so atleast I know someone's gonna be speaking in this video.
07:38
It's by GLTV/Global Television.
07:41
Ugh! This video's like 23 minutes long, uh.
07:44
I mean, I'll watch it. But I'm not gonna put you guys through the torture of watching me watch it.
07:49
Okay, so I just finished watching it
07:54
and that was actually a pretty good documentary.
07:56
It's all about oil, oil, oil, oil, OIL!
07:57
So I guess the biggest things I'm taking away from all this research is that
08:00
it's a country that speaks Spanish, they're heavy on oil,
08:02
and it has a crazy past.
08:06
But they're still trying to make things better.
08:07
But there's still some controversey.
08:09
And people are very artistic.
08:11
And I don't know, I'll figure out the rest.
08:13
Well that was fun, hope you guys enjoyed watching me
08:15
Cause that's totally a thing that's
08:20
...that people love doing.
08:22
Watching people research.
08:24
No but seriously, I gotta a lot of good stuff.
08:26
I wrote it in the script.
08:27
Now I just gotta piece everything together.
08:29
And it should be ready to go and when we film
08:31
maybe this week, so Equatorial Guinea, I think I'll do the country proud.
08:33
And then when that guy e-mails me he's gonna tell me everything the complete opposite of everything I just researched.
08:38
But I think I did pretty well for myself in my own research, so -
08:42
We'll see. Equatorial Guinea, get ready.
08:46
Alright, next is gonna be Eritrea.
08:48
