So a couple of days go by and the show ends

and I think that's when I really kind of experienced

a heartbreak and a loss.

So it was sad and it was hard

and I really just blamed it on my family.

And that time, no part of me was thinking

in that moment about what was to come.

Being The Bachelorette was not something that was ever,

that was not even something that I wanted to do,

thought about, was curious about, until I got the call.

I saw it work the first time in the sense that--

- I saw myself develop real feelings

and I fell in love with Ben and I wanted that again.

I was living my life in Nashville

I thought that you had!

- No.

- Do you wanna see that?

I'm curious.

- I've seen pictures of you in that dress

and I was like, I don't know how you break up with her

while she's wearing that but, I don't know, I don't know.

It didn't really matter to me.

It's like in a normal life,

having an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend.

You don't really care how that happened,

you just care about who they are now.

The only thing I saw, I watched two episodes back

and I think it was the second and third so not the finale.

The only thing I remember about the episode,

as you go further and further along in the season

that your emotions are so wacky.

It's like you feel sick, excited, happy, in love,

nauseous, nervous, anxious.

It's a roller coaster of emotions.

But initially, that first night,

it was the most hopeful and excited for the future

that I've ever felt in my life.

- Especially after that kiss.

when you're going through this process

that you actually really do like

but they're not giving you what you want.

So in my mind, I'm going like, this is so weird.

It's like now I'm comparing him to all these other guys

and what they were telling me and then not thinking

that he actually liked me so much so it was very strange.

- Yeah, so a really big moment for me

was the moment I first told you I loved you.

- I remember.

- I remember the first time I thought I did.

We were on a boat coming back from

swimming with a bunch of dirty seals.

- It wasn't 'til we were sitting on that bench.

I had this rush of oh my god.

- This is our first one-on-one date.

I think you could kinda tell I wanted to say something.

- And I've never talked about it.

To me, as you go through the show,

you're always talking with producers and understand,

okay, you're gonna get to meet her parents.

This is your opportunity to ask her dad

for her hand in marriage.

And in my mind, going wait,

this is the first time I'm meeting her dad,

there's still another guy here,

he hasn't really had a chance

to talk to his daughter yet about

how she feels about these guys and so to me,

it just didn't feel right.

So I wanted to sit there with Joe, who I love,

Joe now that I know. - Go pops!

- But the first time I met Joe,

I wanted to tell him, hey, here's how I feel

and I feel like I did.

I said, "I'm so in love with your daughter,

"I feel like this is in the cards for us someday."

But I just didn't ask

because I didn't feel comfortable asking at that point.

I wanted her to have a chance to sit down with dad

and tell him, hey, here's how I'm feeling.

I really do like this guy or maybe I don't.

That's when I would've felt comfortable.

Here's something you guys don't know.

It was a few days after I've met your parents

and they had already left Thailand.

And I went to one of the producers.

I was like, "Okay, I'm ready.

"I would like to call her parents.

"I would like to have a conversation with them."

And they said, "Nope, you missed your chance."

And I said, "Wait, no!

"No, hold up."

"Time out.

"I get it but I'm ready

"and I would like to make a phone call."

So I kinda said, "Here's what's gonna happen.

"You're gonna put me on the phone with Joe and Soraya."

- He's calling the shots now.

- And I did!

I brought the producers in and I said,

"Here's what's gonna happen.

"I realize you guys are filming a TV show

"and we want some drama but I'm gonna ask her to marry me.

"And so I need to get her parents on the phone right now

"or I'll go tell JoJo that I'll see her after the show."

And I was actually willing to walk away at that point

and tell her, hey, they didn't allow me to do this

how I wanted to do it so if you would like to,

I will meet you after the show.

Obviously, it didn't happen that way

and they got her parents on the phone

and I get how it felt to you that I didn't ask your dad.

It wasn't that my feelings weren't there.

It was kind of just a respect thing.

So I was able to call him and get the okay

and that was probably the best day of my life.

(bright upbeat music)

- I'm thinking about it now but did you ever tell me,

yes, I'm going to propose to you on that final day?

- No.

- He didn't.

And so when you say, oh, all the cards are in your hand

and you were so in charge and those,

you will never understand the emotional torment of that day.

- Tell me, tell me what I don't know!

- I'm so passionate about this!

I'm laying in my bed, it's the night before the proposal

and I'm sick to my stomach.

I'm sick, I'm nauseous,

I don't sleep more than 20 minutes that night.

I was so in love with Jordan.

I knew I wanted to be with Jordan

but I was very scared that maybe he wasn't there with me.

And then I had Robby who at the time,

I cared very deeply for as well,

which I think people don't get.

They're like, if you're so in love with Jordan

and you wanna be with Jordan,

why are you so upset and emotional

about saying goodbye to Robby?

And it's like the idea of hurting somebody is...

I hate that.

I don't like to hurt people

and I think that was the hardest part for me.

I was sitting there in my room with the stylist, Keri,

who I love so much and he just looked at me and he said,

JoJo, baby doll, whatever he calls me, he's like--

- Muffin. - "You know what to do

"and if you want to take the safe way out,

"then you know what direction that is

"but if you wanna follow your heart and take a risk on love

"and see what it could be,

"then I think you know the answer to that too."

If I get hurt, I get hurt but at least I know

that I am following my heart and I'm doing what I want

and not what everyone else wants for me.

I got about 30 minutes in between saying goodbye to Robby

and then Jordan walking up to me

so you can only imagine all the feelings

that are going through my mind.

- But we don't know.

I don't know and we've never told each other.

She never told me it was me.

- Never! - I never told her

that I was gonna propose

so in our mind, in my mind,

I'm like, okay the engagement is always like a sunset shot

so I'm like, if I get in that car too early

to head over there, it's not me.

So the whole day,

I'm watching the sun. - Why didn't I think of that?

- I'm like, okay.

And then they tell me, "Okay, it's time to go."

And then I'm like, oh no, that sun's not that low.

I'm like, she's gonna break up with me!

As much as I knew that she loved me

and that I thought she would say yes,

as confident as I was, you still never know.

And so I go through my whole spiel

and then literally, I am flexing to take a knee

and she goes, "Wait."

And you guys don't catch this on camera

'cause our minds go a million miles an hour.

In my mind, I'm like--

- Oh!

- Mother!

I'm like, she's breaking up with me!

You idiot, how'd you not see this coming?

You just made a fool of yourself!

You went through your whole proposal

and then she stops, she goes,

"I just wanna tell you that I love you."

And then it was just all aboard from there

and I got down on one knee and--

- Aw! - But those were things

you don't know!

I was so nervous and then I was confident

and then she stops me and I'm like,

it's over. - What a day!

What a day!

- And then we were just sweating and just sloppy.

(playful rock music)

Once we walked away from the engagement,

you would think it's all love and we get to hang out.

- We obviously just had this really amazing moment.

We just got engaged.

That's a moment that you wait for your whole life

and normally, you wanna shout it from the rooftops,

you wanna tell everybody, and you can't.

Right when you get separated,

you just had this high of a moment,

that's when all the tabloids start coming out

and that's when you start reading

all of the horrible gossips and the rumors

and you start having to deal

with those emotions on your own.

- It was ugly at times.

- Yeah.

- We fought.

And when you just think about it,

you get this person's number after you're engaged.

- It's weird! - So everything up

to that point had been face to face.

You could always see emotion,

you could always talk things out.

- Yeah, that's so true!

We had never dealt with any sort of problems--

- Distance or friction! - Via phone call.

- Yeah, we'd never dealt with distance or friction

or anything like that.

- And that's really when things changed a little bit for us.

- And our story really started.

- The real story began.

And that story is just as important as our love story

because it is how and why we are still together

and sitting here today.
